The Joint Commission- A Non Profit Organization
Introduction
Spiritual care can significantly improve the physical and mental health of nursing home residents.
Elderly people are going through a period of life that is set apart by the loss of ability, wellbeing,
freedom, and companions. Religious and spiritual individuals regularly utilize their faith and beliefs
to adapt to these losses, thus it is critical to keep on providing religious services for seniors who
need them. Unfortunately after admitting to the nursing homes, the spiritual and religious needs of
residents are often overlooked. (BRIA Health Services, 2016). The Joint Commission– a non–profit
organization evaluating the healthcare organizations for quality states, "Patients have a fundamental
right to considerate care that safeguards their personal dignity and respects their cultural,
psychosocial, and spiritual values" (JCAHO, 2009). Tending to the emotional and spiritual needs of
patients, is considered to be a priority quality improvement in healthcare. A nursing home chaplain
can meet the religious and spiritual needs of residents, residents' families, administration, and
employees. The purpose of this paper is to provide an executive summary of a project that is
creating a position of nursing chaplain, to the Board for approval of funding of the project.
The Purpose of the Program The nursing home care is a competitive, fast growing and flourishing
industry. Healthcare facility's profitability is directly linked to patient satisfaction. Evidence exists

Chaplain Maloney Essay
Chaplain Maloney's (Maloney) article, Ethics Theory for the Military Professional, identifies three
predominant ethical problems or challenges faced by members of the military. We are all attempting
to change our career path from NCO to Officer; that is why two of the challenges he identified
piqued my interest. Future situations tied to the Army Values of selfless service and integrity will
test our ethics. I found little irony two of the challenges Chaplain Maloney identified relate heavily
to the Army Values. Maloney identifies people as a challenge for the ethics of leaders. Leaders who
understand "Respect" recognize the troops they command lead to career success. Due to the last 15
years of sustained combat operations and the SOF imperative "work by with and through others,"
Special Forces Warrant Officers understand "Respect." Finding the right motivation for the

Specifically related to integrity is the pressure to report mission success in order to advance our
career. Reporting requirements and high visibility missions will push our leadership skills and
Integrity to the limits. We will need to report failures relating to our missions. The battle at COP
Keating is a great example of incorrect reporting. The terrain chosen for COP Keating lead to supply
and security issues. OPs not placed in sight line of the main COP underscored security issues. 1LT
Keating's death resulted from hazardous roads that hampered supply lines. The investigation after
the battle resulted in the admonishment or reprimands for a captain, a major, a lieutenant colonel
and a colonel. I don't believe the reprimanded Officers nor the Officers who approved the sight and
design of the COP lacked concern or doubt about the location. Instead, they lacked Integrity and
capitulated to the pressure of careerism defined by reporting mission

Hospital-Based Healthcare Providers: Article Analysis
Article Analysis "Exploring the Phenomenon of Spiritual Care Between Hospital Chaplains and
Hospital Based Healthcare Providers," written by Janie J. Taylor, Jennifer L. Hodgson, Irina
Kolobova, Angela L. Lamson, Natalia Sira, and David Musick, is a study involving hospital
chaplains (HCs) and hospital–based healthcare providers (HBHPs) to discover how spirituality
influences the well–being of HBHPs. The research for this study was concentrated in six areas:
chaplain availability, HCs building relationships, chaplain integration; chaplains meet providers'
needs; providers appreciate chaplains; and barriers to chaplains' services (Taylor et al., 2015, p. 96).
The first theme, chaplain availability, concerns the type of services provided by the HCs. Their role
is to improve the awareness of the chaplains' availability to the HBHPs. The services they provide
are not limited to just work related issues but also to spiritual and personal problems the HBHPs
may face in their daily lives (Taylor et al., 2015, p. 96). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These obstacles include divergent cultural beliefs, HCs constraints due to time–consuming
responsibilities, HCs lack of training and experience, and HBHPs lack of awareness of available
services (Taylor et al., 2015, p. 101). The primary purposes of this article are to emphasize that more
than just the patient benefits from spirituality in healthcare and to highlight the advantages and
rewards HBHPs receive with spiritual services. In the past, the focus of spirituality in healthcare was
geared towards the patient's experience; little attention was focused on the HBHPs experience. This
is the first study to concentrate on the HBHPs' negative and positive experiences (Taylor et al.,
2015, pp. 91–93), and is important because it identifies areas of improvement for HCs and
adjustments needed in the training

Joint Task Force Essay
Chaplains care and provide for the members of the Joint Task Force. But what exactly does that
mean? It means simply that we are always going to take your needs seriously and we will do what
we can within our limits to provide for you. This means there will be times when we have to refer
you to someone else. Every chaplain knows they have limits to what they can and cannot do. When
presented with an issue, we listen and then try to determine if we can help you or if there are other
resources available that may be better suited to assist you. You may present a problem to a chaplain
and he or she may recognize this is an issue better addressed by the Equal Opportunity Manager or
maybe the complexity of the issues may need to be addressed at the Joint Stress Mitigation and
Restoration Team. We are going to get you to the right resource in order to best meet your needs. I
hope you never see this as passing you off, because nothing could be further from the truth. Because
we care about you as a person, we are going to provide you with the best possible resources to assist
you. Some of the best services I have been able to provide someone is getting them to the right

If you look at the list of chapel services that are offered during the week, both on the JTF side and

train a lay–leader and establish that particular service within the scope and guidelines of the

Camus And Religion
Religion and existentialism, two sides of two very distinct worlds, different yet both tightly
intertwined. Albert Camus illustrates this parallel in his novel "The Stranger" where the narrator,
Meursault, the stranger, an indifferent man devoid of any concerns both socially and emotionally is
Camus's vessel of existentialism. Breaking from character, Meursault, ironically attacks the
chaplain, another stranger such as himself. Meursault's final act leads to the solidification of his
existentialist behavior through symbolic representation of God, breaking free from society's force of
religion, revolting against any form of hope and accepting the absurdity of life. Throughout "The
Stranger", Camus, provides the reader with distinct symbolic ... Show more content on

Religion is, however confining as most existentist state, is essential for without religion there is no
passion for existentialism. Some would argue if not with religion, where then does wisdom lie? The
answer, as Camus states is in "conscious certainty of a death without hope". Both religion and
existentialism are parallel yes, but both serve to amplify the other. Where else would both get
incentives to commit more passionately into religion or existentialism? The belief of existentialism
stems from the roots of once lush gardens of hope, of the promise of not extinction but an afterlife.
"No! No! I refuse to believe it. I'm sure you've often wished there was an afterlife." Of course I had,
I told him" (Camus 74), Meursault too has hoped and wished and while most would argue that
religion does not kill or harm one's belief, in the end it's all it

Final Assignment – Internship Evaluation
What did you enjoy most about the internship program? Was there anything you'd like to see
changed or done differently?
I really enjoyed the meetings that we had together. It was awesome to get to meet some of the other
interns in the program and I found the meetings to be very informative. It was great to hear about the
core values of the chaplain program and then be able to reflect on things we learned with
assignments. It was all very practical and useful in preparing to potentially become a chaplain.

So team leadership is important because the other leaders around you are a valuable resource to help
you be the best leader you can be. All the roles have equal importance and all are highly valued and
needed. However just because of a certain title, Chaplain, APA, or RA, does not mean that you have
to only be confined to serving in that capacity. It's okay to overlap a bit and help one another lead
well.
One of the quotes that was talked about said: "We can function to the maximum only as we become
a whole person with spirit, mind, and body working harmoniously together." When discussing this
with my group we came to the conclusion that we need to pursue health and make sure we are
taking care of all three aspects of our lives. If one part suffers there are implications in all areas of
life. The health of all three is vital to success in becoming whole and leading with your whole self.

The Pros And Cons Of Firefighter Grieving
"On average there are there are 70 on duty firefighter fatalities in the United States every year."
("Firefighter Fatalities in the United States"). This means that an on duty firefighter dies about every
5 days. Firefighters have enough stress with their everyday job, then you add losing a fellow
member it puts another level to that stress. Imagine two siblings go out to play basketball like they
do multiple times everyday and one of them end up dying in a freak accident. Horrible right? It is
the same thing with firefighters. They go out on a call. There is a freak accident and there is not a
great outcome. "The death of a fellow firefighter is like losing a brother or sister because you are
living with them for almost one–third of your life." (Johnson). Firefighters are one big family. There
has always been firefighter fatalities. The questions has always been: How to deal with one when it
happens. What is the right amount of time off for grieving? Should there be mandatory counseling?
Who do we bring in to support the firefighters? The problem is that every fatal incident ... Show

Grieving is a large part of the healing process. When there is any death anyone who is close with the
person grieves. The closer someone is to the person the longer it may take for them to finish the
grieving process. Giving firefighters mandatory time off for grieving is another way to deal with
firefighter fatalities. "Failure to provide emotional and psychological support may result in the
resurgence of emotions during stressful situations, which may have a detrimental impact on safe
operations." (Theil, 19). Providing time for grieving is important. The problem is that the fire
department has to run and it cannot run without the firefighters. Giving mandatory grieving works in
theory but in reality there would not be anyone to run the fire

Gregg Zoroya
Summary
In this article, Gregg Zoroya reports on the RAND study that revealed that the Army chaplains need
more training in handling suicidal soldiers because almost all of the chaplains who participated in
the study said they have dealt with soldiers who want to kill themselves. This is even more vital
because the study also revealed that chaplains and chaplain assistants do not hold positive views
about therapy hence making them unlikely to advice soldiers to seek therapy when they become
suicidal. Among the reasons they give for this is that soldiers think they will be viewed differently
by peers if they seek help. 44% of army chaplains and 57% of chaplain assistants conceded that they
need more training to help prevent suicide among soldiers.
Even though chaplains receive basic training on suicide intervention skills as told by the Army
spokeswoman Tatjana Christian, there are gaps in practices that the Army Office of Chaplains are

The article demonstrates the culture of problem solving in America where every little problem is
projected to demonstrate its importance. In many other countries, the issue of suicide in the Army
would not be given much attention but in this study, the Pentagon funding the study alone is
important in taking care of soldiers. The most important thing in the article however is training the
chaplains to first believe in therapy and then help those that seek help in the Army since it is
shocking that many of them do not believe in the importance of therapy. Soldiers should also be
made to see the importance of therapy and sensitized against stigmatization of those that seek
therapy because about half of soldiers claimed they would feel embarrassed if their fellow soldiers
found out that they sought

Management Of A Learning Management System ( Lms ) For The...
This paper serves as an expansion of previous analysis on use and management of a Learning
Management System (LMS) for the U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School. First, we'll consider
specific learning assets that will be implemented. Next, treatment will be given to the modality of
the assets in our courses. We'll analyze specific curriculum objectives and relate those to specific
assets. Attention will be given to the relationship between some key stakeholders and asset
management as well. Finally, we'll take a look at how these assets enhance the goals of the course.
Blackboard Learn, our LMS, supports a wide variety of media and hypermedia to support our
learning goals. Virtually all of our courses will, in some way or another, utilize presentations,
videos, lectures, and quizzes. All of these are certainly compatible. Presentations can be helpful for
those with a strong preference for visual learning. Presentations are best utilized asynchronously so
students can review them at a time of their choosing. Presentations can also be transformed fairly
easily into study guides or job aids depending on the content and how it is presented, such as
Adobe's portable document format (PDF). PDF's are a fairly ubiquitous file format that can present
visual information fairly well. There are tools for more visually stimulating presentations as well.

How Does Heller Use Dialogue In Catch 22
Use of Language and Dialogue Catch–22
"Catch–22 is probably best discussed in terms of its language. The prose style Heller employs is
original and distinctive, appropriate and well implemented (Pearson 277)." One application of that
prose style is dialogue; Heller uses dialogue to manifest the themes of the novel. Some of the themes
best shown in the dialogue of the characters are Heller's hatred of war, and his perceived idiocy in
military and in bureaucracy. Scattered throughout the book are several dialogues which share
numerous characteristics. Some particular conversations are especially demonstrative of these
elements. Heller uses these dialogues to communicate his ideas to the reader. In chapter XXXVI,
several military ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"What crime?"
"We don't know yet," said the colonel. "But we're going to find out. And we sure know it's very
serious" (373).
Heller's governmental agents are illogical to either a subhuman or to asuperhuman extent. In another
instance, an "undercover" C.I.D. man fails toconsider the possibility that the culprit who incorrectly
edits letters would sign a nameother than his own. Time after time these agent display profound
disregard for the highercranial facilities.
In the same way that the bureaucratic thought process is convoluted, governmental action (or
inaction) is also often senseless. Often the very nature of an actionprecludes itself: this sort of
situation crops up during the interrogation, for instance, when one of the military officers asks the
chaplain for a handwriting sample in order tocompare the sample to a letter. When the handwriting
sample fails to match that of the letter, the officer concludes that of course –– of course! –– the
chaplain is fakinghis handwriting:
"I can't tell you how disappointed I am in you."
"For what?" persisted the chaplain more frantically. "What have I done?"
"For this," replied the major, and, with an air of disillusioned disgust, tossed down on the table the
pad on which the chaplain had signed his name. "This isn't your handwriting."
The chaplain blinked

Confidentiality In Military
This project will develop a strategy to help Unit Ministry Teams increase Soldier use of Army
Chaplain services by increasing Soldiers' awareness of the absolute confidentiality of Chaplains.
Society generally understands confidentiality as keeping personal information secret or private.
However, this dissertation carries a more doctrinal understanding of the term "confidentiality" in the
context of privileged military communications.
In general, confidentiality refers to keeping personal information secret or private. However, there
are technical distinctions in the military when it comes to closely–held communications, and
military Chaplains come across these in their ministry: privileged communication, confidential
communication, sacramental/confessional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of these Chaplains have communications that takes place as part of "sacramental confession"
in their denominations and endorsing agencies. Sacramental/confessional communications exist in a
religious relationship, where a confessing person communicates with a religious official. Generally,
the relationship and communication involve the confessing person finding solace or forgiveness for
sin. Oftentimes, the confessing person believes that the religious official mediates forgiveness. The
confidentiality of such communications is primarily governed by the clergy's religious group;
however, local and state laws have challenged the privileged nature of this penitent–clergy or
sacramental/confessional communication. It should be noted that overlaying the licensing religious
group and state laws is the Army Regulation specifying that the confidentiality of
sacramental/confessional communication is to remain intact and cannot be waived by any authority
including the confessor. On the other hand, in non–military chaplain contexts,
sacramental/confessional communication may not be fully protected as some mandatory reporting
laws and some duties to warn do not exempt clergy or sacramental/confessional communication. "If
the [civilian] pastor is a mandated reporter and failed to report instances of child physical or sexual
abuse to the authorities, this conduct is criminal in many

soldier suicides at the state level. The project did not suffer from lack of participation by chaplains
who heard the initial phase 1 introduction to CALLS training and enlistment for more information.
However, the Project Director acknowledges that there was an underestimate to the sheer volume of
information that the Bible has on the topic of suicidality. Characters throughout the Old Testament

would have taken the project much further off of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would allow senior pastors or other leaders to train ministers to be better pastoral counselors in
their own churches with people who have nothing to do with the military. Even if the work of this
dissertation is not adapted to the civilian world by other students or by future implementation of the
Project Direct, the training is still of value to the Arkansas Army National Guard. The next step for
this training is the continuation and deepening of the topics by the state's 4 brigade chaplains. Each
chaplain is responsibly to develop a yearly training plan for their subordinate ministry teams. 2 of
the 4 brigade chaplains plan to evaluate CALLS training and then write their own additions which
address areas they are specifically seeing among their smaller population of troops. This means that
CALLS will be even more specialized and precise for the soldier needing to receive pastoral
counseling from their chaplain. Furthermore, the Project Director could make this a required new
training for all chaplain candidates in the state prior to them going to a battalion ministry for
observation. Application beyond the state of Arkansas is easily achievable. Two areas remain open
for an immediate impact on chaplains across all components but specifically

A Reflection On The Life Of Hereworth Church
It is something of a challenge to write a reflection on the life of the chapel through 2017 when I
have only been there for a small part of it. Suffice it to say that the past year has been one of change
and transition for the role of Chaplain at Hereworth School, and for the life of the chapel. With
Reverend Rosemary Carey's departure at the end of Term Two, the life of the chapel was placed in
the hands of the teaching staff for Term Three, with valiant efforts to continue the spiritual
dimension of the school. While no doubt the experience was enjoyed by staff and students alike, the
words uttered to me by one staff member as I left my first chapel service, "Thank God you're here",
suggest there is an appreciation for the unique challenges of the role.
These challenges are what I have been discovering as I have gone, very quickly, through our final
term of 2017. While there are definitely similarities to the parish ministry I was engaged in prior to
joining Hereworth, there are also distinct differences – the demographic being a major part of that
difference. How do we translate the great power and truth of our Christian faith into language and
practices that are intelligible and formative for young boys? What are the tools and resources of our
faith that not only form our heritage but the character of those who come under their tutelage? What
is it that the spiritual life of Hereworth School can provide to our boys and our communities that
make it indispensable,

DoD Directive
In further refining the role or limitations for a Chaplain, the Department of Defense provides
directives to bring clarity to more specific issues. The Chaplain is viewed as the subject matter
expert (SME) on religion. With this in mind, and his/her position as personal staff officer to the
commander, they are called on to advise commanders on issues pertaining to religion and the
accommodation thereof. Department of Defense Directive 1300.17 indicates specific guidance to the
acceptance of religious accommodations. Since the military places "high value" (DoD Directive
1300.7) on the right to free exercise of religion, commands are encouraged to accommodate
religious needs where appropriate. While on the outset, this does not apply directly to the Chaplain,
he/she is the SME on all matters pertaining to religion. Therefore, this directive again narrows,
limits, the scope of the Chaplain to religious matters. Commanders are encouraged to utilize the
expertise of the Chaplain when determining when and how to accommodate religious practices. This
fosters greater unit cohesion and unit readiness as it pertains to spiritual fitness and resiliency (DoD
Directive 1300.7).
Army Regulation
In the scope of understanding the role of a Chaplain, service level regulations contain the most
specific detail on limitations and refinement. Therefore, this study now turns to a review of

The Theme Of Freedom In Sorry For Your Loss By Bridget Keehan

faith by holding on to the "be, know, do concept between the 1200s and the 1600s AD. Being a
practitioner of faith meant applying the rites commanders and the papacy authorized as a mission
requirement. Knowing meant priests were to have a thorough knowledge of the rites of penance,
mass, final unction, and viaticum. [1] Doing simply meant conducting the ... Show more content on

Weakness Once governments saw the potential for victory for its political gain, the chaplaincy began
to weaken and divide. For example, the War in England as written in pamphlets described the role of
the chaplain during that time. Their job in this role was to sustain men who had to face their
neighbors in a war over political and religious differences. [3] Some chaplains were used to control
the spread of heterodox religious views, while others left the military in pursuit of doing what is
right, and preaching the true message of God. This departure from the military added to the
weakness of the chaplaincy. Another weakness, chaplains were wrongly accused or labeled as evil,
when it fact, laymen were the culprits. It was laymen such as Henry Denne and Paul Hobson who
gave the army a reputation for radical sectarianism; the further association of religious radicals with
the chaplains was almost entirely independent of the chaplains themselves[4].
Opportunities
Valuable lessons learned about chaplains during this given time period is that the need to administer
God in truth to all people provided a means of opportunity for the chaplaincy. When shortages of
chaplains occurred, governments selected priests with no military affiliation. And for chaplains who
stayed behind in their parishes, governments imposed special instructions as well. For example,
Benedict the Levite insisted that clerics celebrate masses, carry out

Chaplain Jim Cosgrove's Poem 'Stronger Than Grief'
Poetry Anthology
Due to the diversity of Australia, the definition of the true Australian identity has changed over time.
However, there are several main attributes that have been embedded into the modern Australian
identity, mate–ship, courage, resilience and acceptance. The theme in this anthology is war, this has
been selected as Australia has been through several wars and, it is in these times where the true
Australian identity stands out. It was during several wars where Australia's national identity was
developed and several significant, everlasting attributes were formed, such as, mate–ship,
acceptance, courage, resilience and a never giving up attitude. In addition to that as a result of
Australia's diversity and increase in multiculturalism, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This poem is based on families throughout the war, making sense of their loved one's death. While
they are overcome with grief and sorrow, they have an overwhelming sense of appreciation for what
their loved one had achieved in fighting for the country. Chaplain Jim Cosgrove has portrayed
Australians as being very sacrificial, resilient, courageous, this can be seen through several
examples in the poem. In addition to that, throughout the poem it can be seen that the poet believes
mate–ship is a fundamental aspect of the Australian identity. 'Their courage and belief are even
stronger than their grief that their sacrifice is for a worthy cause.' This example, in lines 13 and 14,
shows the poets views of Australians, that they are brave, courageous and sacrificial. This is
reflected in the Australian identity and supports Australia's dominant cultural values. Another
examples of this is in lines 23 & 24, 'In the history of their nation there are many generations whose
sacrifice has made our country free.' An example of the poet displaying mate–ship as being a
significant aspect of the Australian identity is in lines 17–18, 'They want to tell their mates to never
doubt or hesitate, to fight this fight against the reign of terror.' The poet has used imagery throughout
the poem, to help the reader construct an image. Furthermore, Chaplain Jim Cosgrove has set a
somber and melancholy mood and tone through the choice of words that highlight the sacrifices
made by soldiers in the war. Thus, giving the poem more

Literary Devices In The Stranger, By Albert Camus
In the novel, The Stranger, by Albert Camus, Camus uses a variety of literary devices in order to
create a moment of inward reflection from readers, in which we reflect on just how absurd our
existence is. Camus expresses his critique through one major character, Meursault, and a few minor
characters as well. Camus's use of irony pushed readers to look beyond the surface, and come to the
conclusion of where the irony was displayed. Camus also made use of ironic moments in order to
contrast the expectations of society, to how Meursault differs from that, all to gradually expose the
hypocrisy of mankind. Camus generally uses this literary device in order make us evaluate our own
selves and more importantly to display the fact that we as people can be truly happy, only if we
accept our fate, instead of fighting it. In a way, he's suggesting we be more like Meursault.
Examples of this would be the funeral caretaker insisting that Meursault view his mother's body, and
Meursault continuously refusing. Camus does this to make people think: what exactly is wrong with
Meursault not wanting to see his dead mother? Through this technique camus shows societal
expectations of how people are supposed to mourn lost, and certain responses to lost are deemed
abnormal. Thus Meursault's lack of grief automatically made him an outsider. Other uses of irony
can be shown through Meursault's interactions with the chaplain, and the authority involved in his
criminal case played out later on in the

May 17th, 2011 Although it is still open for debate, there are suggestions that chaplaincy, as a
function in the military, can be traced in the Old Testament. Consider the battle of the Israelites and
the Amalekites. The children of Israel experienced victory as long Moses held his hands up in Prayer
to God. Another example that is discussed in the book deals with the Priests who carried the Ark of

The liturgy of war reveals how those entrusted with the spiritual care of the soldiers were used and
also how those soldiers were affected by the words of the religious men among them. Constantine is
known to have claimed seeing a vision of the cross which was an indication of divine help. And if
his soldiers were to paint the symbol of the cross on their shields then, victory would be granted. His
victory over the Roman Empire begun what was to be the Christianization of the conquered
territory. But it was during the rise of the Carolingian monarchy that seems to have changed the
history of war rituals. Doris Bergen mentions three factors that contributed to this change. These
were, interest in performance of liturgy, nature of warfare had changed and ambition of the new
monarchy which believed that both their activities were divinely sanctioned and that the ruler bore
personal responsibility for subjects' minds and souls. The revival of liturgy credited to the
Carolingians and the application of a different kind of warfare in the middle east by the warriors of
the first crusade that resulted in great success, would later give birth to what Doris calls "A new kind
of war, a crusade, and with it, the liturgical rites that

Chaplain Recruiting
On 1 February 2015 I received an email that was filled with both excitement and fear; I remember it
like it was yesterday. I was sitting in my office at Fort Knox, Kentucky after a long day addressing
all the issues that Chaplain Recruiting faced with my SGM, MSG Jose Canales. It was around 1900
and we were discussing the way ahead with getting back on track with the 2015 mission facing
Chaplain Recruiting. In FY14, the Chaplaincy would fail to achieve its recruiting mission for the
first time ever. I was selected to take over as the Chief of Army Chaplain recruiting to get the
mission back on track even though I had a stabilization packet for my oldest daughter to finish her

Advocacy Programs
As of late, there are many times when we all needed a shoulder to cry on or simply just someone to
talk to. Chaplains are volunteers, normally associated with a religious institution, that volunteer to
help in times of need. They are there to help emergency personnel, as well as, citizens. There are
certainly more pros then cons with Chaplains. Chaplains are there to help, anyone. The only
negative could be someone wanting a specific religious group and not getting it. According to

People continuously need help, especially victims of crimes. Victims need assistance in all sorts of
ways. Depending on the situation victims may need someone to talk to, help in court, and may need
some sort of aftercare of therapy. There are many victim assistant programs that can do all these
things and more. Today I am going to focus on a program based in Ohio and can be found online at
www.victimassistanceprogram.org. This program offers a wide variety of services to help victims.
Again, the pros far exceed the cons. One of biggest cons I can come up with, is a victim not
connecting or liking the advocate assigned to them. The Victim Assistance Program offers a 24–hour
hotline so people can call in any time to get help. According to their website (2013), Victim
Assistance Program staff, interns and volunteers share the responsibility of providing victims with
support on the 24–hour crisis hotline. Because our agency serves victims of all crime types, those
answering the hotline are trained to offer compassionate and nonjudgmental crisis intervention,
emotional support, safety plans, information on victims' legal rights, community referrals as well as

Listening Well-A Chaplain Vocation Summary
In "Listening Well – A Chaplain Vocation," Nicole Chivilis surprises me when he points out that
listening has a sacramental dimension. I have no doubt of that, but I never think of listening as
sacrament. Indeed, Chivilis indicates that in the hospital setting, circles of unity, understanding,
reconciliation and forgiveness among family members and friends could be formed to share about
their loved ones. They form a "communion table" and the chaplain is in the "sacred space." Thus,
according to Chivilis, "listening well creates a space in which a truth can be spoken." I think that
recognizing listening as sacrament is very significant because the stories that we the listeners receive
are sacred treasures. For that reason, I always feel blessed

The United States Army National Guard is currently faced with the significant task of helping its

has buried 614 troops who died by their own hand. These men and women have come from every
state and territory across the Unites States with the exception of the District of Columbia and the
Virgin Islands. States such as Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Minnesota have suffered the
most loss with each state losing 29 people to suicide. These deaths are not on the battle fields of
Afghanistan or Iraq. In fact, the combat deaths during the exact same time frame for Army National

Specifically, training is foundational to everything in the Army and helps to shape a young teenage
boy or girl into a tank mechanic, administrative specialist, infantry officer, or any number of military
occupational specialties (MOS). Some jobs require the additional support of civilian training and
this is true in the special staff branches such as the Judge Advocate Generals corps, Medical corps,
and Chaplains corps. Army Chaplains in particular are required to obtain at least seventy–two
seminary hours and a Master's degree in order to become a commissioned military officer. During
their seminary time, future chaplains are trained in sermon preparations, church administration, and
administering the ordinances of their faith group. However, they are rarely trained in addressing one
of the most critical topics currently facing today's military personnel. Specifically, this would be
training in counseling troops who are experiencing suicidal ideations. Another possible place for
members of the Army chaplain corps to receive training in addressing a potential suicidal person
would be during their initial military instruction time at the United States Army Chaplain Center and

not have training for this on their course curriculum for either the Chaplain Basic Officer Leaders

Chaplain's roles: Integrating spiritual care into the health system
In this paper I will be discussing the role of the chaplain in the health care system, importance of
collaboration between chaplains and health care professionals, discussion on ethics, and the roles
that spirituality, culture and religion play in positive health outcomes. The occupation of a chaplain
comes with many different roles. Their duties include comforting, listening, and being a guide as
patients travel through a world of emotions. Here in the U.S. health care chaplains play a big role in
providing spiritual care and support for patients. Referring back to the mini lecture on religion and
health. Spiritual assessment and care are being integrated into patient care plans. Health care
organizations are starting to see that when there is a lack of understanding of patient religious or
cultural needs that the quality of care decreases.
In the article Collaborating with Chaplains to Meet Spiritual Needs spirituality was defined as a
broad concept that signifies a person's sense of purpose in life and connectedness to something
greater themselves. It can include, but is not limited to, religious expressions (Meisenhelder, 2006 as
cited in McClung, Grossoehme, Jacobson, 2006). Religion is often referred to as a set of
communally held beliefs that are expressed publicly. Not everyone is religious, all people are

Verbatim Reflection
When I brought this verbatim to my supervisor and peers, I received affirmation and criticism that I
carried with me the rest of the summer. They named one of my main strengths that they saw show
up in this verbatim–my ability to connect with people on a human level, to make people feel
comfortable and at ease in my presence. They saw this in how the patient felt comfortable sharing
her struggles concerning her hospital trip, but also about her daughter and her churches. To me, I did
not see this as anything special; I thought it was normal and natural to focus not only on what was
happening in the hospital, but on the patient's life more broadly–I want patients to know that they

Question 5: Impressions of Clinical Pastoral Education
The most significant learning experience I had from CPE was a shift from doing things perfectly, to
being a human to another human. When I started CPE, I was fearful I did not know what to "do."
The scant few days of training and orientation seemed wholly inadequate for the task ahead–I was
supposed to provide pastoral care? I was supposed to be a chaplain? Suddenly the vocation I had
dreamed of doing for so long was before me, and I was terrified of messing it up. The clinical
method of learning–action, reflection, action–seemed outrageous. I am a perfectionist, and I often
want to know the exact steps in the procedure; I want to know what to do to achieve optimal results.
I was immobilized by fear of failure. Our supervisor jokingly cajoled us with the phrase, "Get lost!"
What started as his best advice to navigating the confusing world of the hospital became advice in a
much broader sense. He emphasized that CPE was about getting lost and finding your way through,
it was about letting go of a theology of perfection to

The 7 Simple Principles Of Corporate Chaplaincy
I have recently read Mark Cress' C–Change: How To Transform Any Business Through The 7
Simple Principles of Corporate Chaplaincy (Wake Forest, NC: Lamphier, 2005). This review will
discuss and evaluate the seven principles – Christ, Call, Confidentiality, Compassion, Control,
Consistency, and Conversion – and briefly discuss their relevance and importance and the way the
author has presented and discussed each principle. In addition I will critique two things I disagree
with, and in conclusion I will give a final assessment of the book including more personal opinion.
Clear introduction that outlines your intentions
Mark Cress is the founder and former president of Corporate Chaplains of America (CCA) with
some 18 years' experience in corporate chaplaincy. According to his book's preface, by learning the
'7 C's' of Corporate Chaplaincy will open up new perspectives of leadership and care for individuals,
and by implementing them into the life of the business "will transform it for future success and
eternally impact the lives of its employees in the process" (Cress, 2005, p. ii). Cress has written his
book in seven short chapters – one for each of the principles – each a short story from the
perspective of a fictional chaplain new to the job, Reverend Lonnie Peppers, based on real life
situations. These situations reflect the principles and their importance, and how the situation changes

not. Explain how the understanding of religious leadership has changed throughout one's career. It
will also discuss roles and responsibilities of religious leadership as a company grade Chaplain and
field grade Chaplain. Finishing by discussing what emotional intelligence in leadership looks like
through the lens of being a religious leader. To understand what Religious Leadership is one must
determine the definition of the word "leadership." The Army describes leadership as, "An Army

Aubrey Malphurs (2003) believes that "those who lead set the example to those who follow."
Someone showing religious leadership also demonstrates the capabilities of a good follower. One
using the belief system of this writer would understand what a follower is through Biblical
Scripture. "but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader
like the servant." Luke 22:26 In other words a leader who serves is worth following but a leader who
does not serve is not worth following, especially someone who follows self. Religious leadership
can also describe a group of people following a particular belief system and having influence over
others. Examples would be the Southern Baptist Convention or the Evangelical Church Alliance and
many others. Although a particular group of people may not set out to provide religious leadership,
they do lead by making decisions for members in that particular group. It could be considered a
selective form of religious leadership.
If a religious leader is one who influences others to follow a particular set of beliefs, then someone
who does not influence others should not be considered as one who provides leadership. Within the
Christian faith there are Pastors, Bishops, Priest, Elders, Deacons and other positions of authority. A
position within a religious organization does not give on the power to provide religious

Their names were George Lansing Fox, Alexander David Goode, Clark

because they helped other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their own life

Response To The Author Chaplains The Locket
In the short story The Locket, it is believed that the author Chaplains writing style has kept the
readers guessing throughout the story. Many would agree that the ending of the story was a shocker
and few expected that conclusion. They would agree that the father–in–law proceeding with the
funeral arrangements supporting the assumption the deceased person in the coffin was Edmund
because he had the locket around his neck played into the authors plot twist. People would also say
that the end of the story was intriguing, especially when Octavia opened the letter from the priest,
returning her locket to her expressing his sorrow of the death of her husband Edmund. Only to find
out at the very end Edmund was not dead and he was waiting for her at the door.
In the conclusion of the story, many would say they didn't really know what was going to happen in
the end of the book. Chaplain threw a curve ball and surprised all at the ending of the story. The
writer did a very good job of confusing readers that the man at the campfire that died was Edmund.

The Joint Commission- A Non Profit Organization

  • 1. The Joint Commission- A Non Profit Organization Introduction Spiritual care can significantly improve the physical and mental health of nursing home residents. Elderly people are going through a period of life that is set apart by the loss of ability, wellbeing, freedom, and companions. Religious and spiritual individuals regularly utilize their faith and beliefs to adapt to these losses, thus it is critical to keep on providing religious services for seniors who need them. Unfortunately after admitting to the nursing homes, the spiritual and religious needs of residents are often overlooked. (BRIA Health Services, 2016). The Joint Commission– a non–profit organization evaluating the healthcare organizations for quality states, "Patients have a fundamental right to considerate care that safeguards their personal dignity and respects their cultural, psychosocial, and spiritual values" (JCAHO, 2009). Tending to the emotional and spiritual needs of patients, is considered to be a priority quality improvement in healthcare. A nursing home chaplain can meet the religious and spiritual needs of residents, residents' families, administration, and employees. The purpose of this paper is to provide an executive summary of a project that is creating a position of nursing chaplain, to the Board for approval of funding of the project. The Purpose of the Program The nursing home care is a competitive, fast growing and flourishing industry. Healthcare facility's profitability is directly linked to patient satisfaction. • 3. Chaplain Maloney Essay Chaplain Maloney's (Maloney) article, Ethics Theory for the Military Professional, identifies three predominant ethical problems or challenges faced by members of the military. We are all attempting to change our career path from NCO to Officer; that is why two of the challenges he identified piqued my interest. Future situations tied to the Army Values of selfless service and integrity will test our ethics. I found little irony two of the challenges Chaplain Maloney identified relate heavily to the Army Values. Maloney identifies people as a challenge for the ethics of leaders. Leaders who understand "Respect" recognize the troops they command lead to career success. Due to the last 15 years of sustained combat operations and the SOF imperative "work by with and through others," Special Forces Warrant Officers understand "Respect." Finding the right motivation for the Detachment and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Specifically related to integrity is the pressure to report mission success in order to advance our career. Reporting requirements and high visibility missions will push our leadership skills and Integrity to the limits. We will need to report failures relating to our missions. The battle at COP Keating is a great example of incorrect reporting. The terrain chosen for COP Keating lead to supply and security issues. OPs not placed in sight line of the main COP underscored security issues. 1LT Keating's death resulted from hazardous roads that hampered supply lines. The investigation after the battle resulted in the admonishment or reprimands for a captain, a major, a lieutenant colonel and a colonel. I don't believe the reprimanded Officers nor the Officers who approved the sight and design of the COP lacked concern or doubt about the location. Instead, they lacked Integrity and capitulated to the pressure of careerism defined by reporting mission ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Hospital-Based Healthcare Providers: Article Analysis Article Analysis "Exploring the Phenomenon of Spiritual Care Between Hospital Chaplains and Hospital Based Healthcare Providers," written by Janie J. Taylor, Jennifer L. Hodgson, Irina Kolobova, Angela L. Lamson, Natalia Sira, and David Musick, is a study involving hospital chaplains (HCs) and hospital–based healthcare providers (HBHPs) to discover how spirituality influences the well–being of HBHPs. The research for this study was concentrated in six areas: chaplain availability, HCs building relationships, chaplain integration; chaplains meet providers' needs; providers appreciate chaplains; and barriers to chaplains' services (Taylor et al., 2015, p. 96). The first theme, chaplain availability, concerns the type of services provided by the HCs. Their role is to improve the awareness of the chaplains' availability to the HBHPs. The services they provide are not limited to just work related issues but also to spiritual and personal problems the HBHPs may face in their daily lives (Taylor et al., 2015, p. 96). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These obstacles include divergent cultural beliefs, HCs constraints due to time–consuming responsibilities, HCs lack of training and experience, and HBHPs lack of awareness of available services (Taylor et al., 2015, p. 101). The primary purposes of this article are to emphasize that more than just the patient benefits from spirituality in healthcare and to highlight the advantages and rewards HBHPs receive with spiritual services. In the past, the focus of spirituality in healthcare was geared towards the patient's experience; little attention was focused on the HBHPs experience. This is the first study to concentrate on the HBHPs' negative and positive experiences (Taylor et al., 2015, pp. 91–93), and is important because it identifies areas of improvement for HCs and adjustments needed in the training ... • 7. Joint Task Force Essay Chaplains care and provide for the members of the Joint Task Force. But what exactly does that mean? It means simply that we are always going to take your needs seriously and we will do what we can within our limits to provide for you. This means there will be times when we have to refer you to someone else. Every chaplain knows they have limits to what they can and cannot do. When presented with an issue, we listen and then try to determine if we can help you or if there are other resources available that may be better suited to assist you. You may present a problem to a chaplain and he or she may recognize this is an issue better addressed by the Equal Opportunity Manager or maybe the complexity of the issues may need to be addressed at the Joint Stress Mitigation and Restoration Team. We are going to get you to the right resource in order to best meet your needs. I hope you never see this as passing you off, because nothing could be further from the truth. Because we care about you as a person, we are going to provide you with the best possible resources to assist you. Some of the best services I have been able to provide someone is getting them to the right person, whether it be a counselor in mental health, a financial advisor at Fleet and Family Support ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you look at the list of chapel services that are offered during the week, both on the JTF side and on the Naval Station Guantanamo Bay side, you will see there is a long list. Not all these services are conducted by a chaplain. When a particular faith group makes a request for services, we work to train a lay–leader and establish that particular service within the scope and guidelines of the SECNAVINST 1730 series that governs religious ministries. Chaplains cannot lead every specific type of worship service, but we can ensure each specific group is able to worship within the guidelines ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Camus And Religion Religion and existentialism, two sides of two very distinct worlds, different yet both tightly intertwined. Albert Camus illustrates this parallel in his novel "The Stranger" where the narrator, Meursault, the stranger, an indifferent man devoid of any concerns both socially and emotionally is Camus's vessel of existentialism. Breaking from character, Meursault, ironically attacks the chaplain, another stranger such as himself. Meursault's final act leads to the solidification of his existentialist behavior through symbolic representation of God, breaking free from society's force of religion, revolting against any form of hope and accepting the absurdity of life. Throughout "The Stranger", Camus, provides the reader with distinct symbolic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Religion is, however confining as most existentist state, is essential for without religion there is no passion for existentialism. Some would argue if not with religion, where then does wisdom lie? The answer, as Camus states is in "conscious certainty of a death without hope". Both religion and existentialism are parallel yes, but both serve to amplify the other. Where else would both get incentives to commit more passionately into religion or existentialism? The belief of existentialism stems from the roots of once lush gardens of hope, of the promise of not extinction but an afterlife. "No! No! I refuse to believe it. I'm sure you've often wished there was an afterlife." Of course I had, I told him" (Camus 74), Meursault too has hoped and wished and while most would argue that religion does not kill or harm one's belief, in the end it's all it ... I really enjoyed the meetings that we had together. It was awesome to get to meet some of the other interns in the program and I found the meetings to be very informative. It was great to hear about the core values of the chaplain program and then be able to reflect on things we learned with assignments. It was all very practical and useful in preparing to potentially become a chaplain. How has the chaplain internship helped you see the heart behind the chaplain program? So team leadership is important because the other leaders around you are a valuable resource to help you be the best leader you can be. All the roles have equal importance and all are highly valued and needed. However just because of a certain title, Chaplain, APA, or RA, does not mean that you have to only be confined to serving in that capacity. It's okay to overlap a bit and help one another lead well. One of the quotes that was talked about said: "We can function to the maximum only as we become a whole person with spirit, mind, and body working harmoniously together." When discussing this with my group we came to the conclusion that we need to pursue health and make sure we are taking care of all three aspects of our lives. If one part suffers there are implications in all areas of life. The health of all three is vital to success in becoming whole and leading with your whole self. • 13. The Pros And Cons Of Firefighter Grieving "On average there are there are 70 on duty firefighter fatalities in the United States every year." ("Firefighter Fatalities in the United States"). This means that an on duty firefighter dies about every 5 days. Firefighters have enough stress with their everyday job, then you add losing a fellow member it puts another level to that stress. Imagine two siblings go out to play basketball like they do multiple times everyday and one of them end up dying in a freak accident. Horrible right? It is the same thing with firefighters. They go out on a call. There is a freak accident and there is not a great outcome. "The death of a fellow firefighter is like losing a brother or sister because you are living with them for almost one–third of your life." (Johnson). Firefighters are one big family. There has always been firefighter fatalities. The questions has always been: How to deal with one when it happens. What is the right amount of time off for grieving? Should there be mandatory counseling? Who do we bring in to support the firefighters? The problem is that every fatal incident ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Grieving is a large part of the healing process. When there is any death anyone who is close with the person grieves. The closer someone is to the person the longer it may take for them to finish the grieving process. Giving firefighters mandatory time off for grieving is another way to deal with firefighter fatalities. "Failure to provide emotional and psychological support may result in the resurgence of emotions during stressful situations, which may have a detrimental impact on safe operations." (Theil, 19). Providing time for grieving is important. The problem is that the fire department has to run and it cannot run without the firefighters. Giving mandatory grieving works in theory but in reality there would not be anyone to run the fire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Gregg Zoroya Summary In this article, Gregg Zoroya reports on the RAND study that revealed that the Army chaplains need more training in handling suicidal soldiers because almost all of the chaplains who participated in the study said they have dealt with soldiers who want to kill themselves. This is even more vital because the study also revealed that chaplains and chaplain assistants do not hold positive views about therapy hence making them unlikely to advice soldiers to seek therapy when they become suicidal. Among the reasons they give for this is that soldiers think they will be viewed differently by peers if they seek help. 44% of army chaplains and 57% of chaplain assistants conceded that they need more training to help prevent suicide among soldiers. Even though chaplains receive basic training on suicide intervention skills as told by the Army spokeswoman Tatjana Christian, there are gaps in practices that the Army Office of Chaplains are studying in ... The most important thing in the article however is training the chaplains to first believe in therapy and then help those that seek help in the Army since it is shocking that many of them do not believe in the importance of therapy. Soldiers should also be made to see the importance of therapy and sensitized against stigmatization of those that seek therapy because about half of soldiers claimed they would feel embarrassed if their fellow soldiers found out that they sought ... This paper serves as an expansion of previous analysis on use and management of a Learning Management System (LMS) for the U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School. First, we'll consider specific learning assets that will be implemented. Next, treatment will be given to the modality of the assets in our courses. We'll analyze specific curriculum objectives and relate those to specific assets. Attention will be given to the relationship between some key stakeholders and asset management as well. Finally, we'll take a look at how these assets enhance the goals of the course. Blackboard Learn, our LMS, supports a wide variety of media and hypermedia to support our learning goals. Virtually all of our courses will, in some way or another, utilize presentations, videos, lectures, and quizzes. All of these are certainly compatible. Presentations can be helpful for those with a strong preference for visual learning. Presentations are best utilized asynchronously so students can review them at a time of their choosing. Presentations can also be transformed fairly easily into study guides or job aids depending on the content and how it is presented, such as Adobe's portable document format (PDF). PDF's are a fairly ubiquitous file format that can present visual information fairly well. There are tools for more visually stimulating presentations as well. • 21. How Does Heller Use Dialogue In Catch 22 Use of Language and Dialogue Catch–22 "Catch–22 is probably best discussed in terms of its language. The prose style Heller employs is original and distinctive, appropriate and well implemented (Pearson 277)." One application of that prose style is dialogue; Heller uses dialogue to manifest the themes of the novel. Some of the themes best shown in the dialogue of the characters are Heller's hatred of war, and his perceived idiocy in military and in bureaucracy. Scattered throughout the book are several dialogues which share numerous characteristics. Some particular conversations are especially demonstrative of these elements. Heller uses these dialogues to communicate his ideas to the reader. In chapter XXXVI, several military ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "What crime?" "We don't know yet," said the colonel. "But we're going to find out. And we sure know it's very serious" (373). Heller's governmental agents are illogical to either a subhuman or to asuperhuman extent. In another instance, an "undercover" C.I.D. man fails toconsider the possibility that the culprit who incorrectly edits letters would sign a nameother than his own. Time after time these agent display profound disregard for the highercranial facilities. In the same way that the bureaucratic thought process is convoluted, governmental action (or inaction) is also often senseless. Often the very nature of an actionprecludes itself: this sort of situation crops up during the interrogation, for instance, when one of the military officers asks the chaplain for a handwriting sample in order tocompare the sample to a letter. When the handwriting sample fails to match that of the letter, the officer concludes that of course –– of course! –– the chaplain is fakinghis handwriting: "I can't tell you how disappointed I am in you." "For what?" persisted the chaplain more frantically. "What have I done?" "For this," replied the major, and, with an air of disillusioned disgust, tossed down on the table the pad on which the chaplain had signed his name. "This isn't your handwriting." Confidentiality In Military This project will develop a strategy to help Unit Ministry Teams increase Soldier use of Army Chaplain services by increasing Soldiers' awareness of the absolute confidentiality of Chaplains. Society generally understands confidentiality as keeping personal information secret or private. However, this dissertation carries a more doctrinal understanding of the term "confidentiality" in the context of privileged military communications. In general, confidentiality refers to keeping personal information secret or private. However, there are technical distinctions in the military when it comes to closely–held communications, and military Chaplains come across these in their ministry: privileged communication, confidential communication, sacramental/confessional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of these Chaplains have communications that takes place as part of "sacramental confession" in their denominations and endorsing agencies. Sacramental/confessional communications exist in a religious relationship, where a confessing person communicates with a religious official. Generally, the relationship and communication involve the confessing person finding solace or forgiveness for sin. Oftentimes, the confessing person believes that the religious official mediates forgiveness. The confidentiality of such communications is primarily governed by the clergy's religious group; however, local and state laws have challenged the privileged nature of this penitent–clergy or sacramental/confessional communication. It should be noted that overlaying the licensing religious group and state laws is the Army Regulation specifying that the confidentiality of sacramental/confessional communication is to remain intact and cannot be waived by any authority including the confessor. On the other hand, in non–military chaplain contexts, sacramental/confessional communication may not be fully protected as some mandatory reporting laws and some duties to warn do not exempt clergy or sacramental/confessional communication. • 32. A Reflection On The Life Of Hereworth Church It is something of a challenge to write a reflection on the life of the chapel through 2017 when I have only been there for a small part of it. Suffice it to say that the past year has been one of change and transition for the role of Chaplain at Hereworth School, and for the life of the chapel. With Reverend Rosemary Carey's departure at the end of Term Two, the life of the chapel was placed in the hands of the teaching staff for Term Three, with valiant efforts to continue the spiritual dimension of the school. While no doubt the experience was enjoyed by staff and students alike, the words uttered to me by one staff member as I left my first chapel service, "Thank God you're here", suggest there is an appreciation for the unique challenges of the role. These challenges are what I have been discovering as I have gone, very quickly, through our final term of 2017. While there are definitely similarities to the parish ministry I was engaged in prior to joining Hereworth, there are also distinct differences – the demographic being a major part of that difference. How do we translate the great power and truth of our Christian faith into language and practices that are intelligible and formative for young boys? What are the tools and resources of our faith that not only form our heritage but the character of those who come under their tutelage? Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... DoD Directive In further refining the role or limitations for a Chaplain, the Department of Defense provides directives to bring clarity to more specific issues. The Chaplain is viewed as the subject matter expert (SME) on religion. With this in mind, and his/her position as personal staff officer to the commander, they are called on to advise commanders on issues pertaining to religion and the accommodation thereof. Department of Defense Directive 1300.17 indicates specific guidance to the acceptance of religious accommodations. Since the military places "high value" (DoD Directive 1300.7) on the right to free exercise of religion, commands are encouraged to accommodate religious needs where appropriate. While on the outset, this does not apply directly to the Chaplain, he/she is the SME on all matters pertaining to religion. Therefore, this directive again narrows, limits, the scope of the Chaplain to religious matters. Commanders are encouraged to utilize the expertise of the Chaplain when determining when and how to accommodate religious practices. This fosters greater unit cohesion and unit readiness as it pertains to spiritual fitness and resiliency (DoD Directive 1300.7). Army Regulation

Weakness Once governments saw the potential for victory for its political gain, the chaplaincy began to weaken and divide. For example, the War in England as written in pamphlets described the role of the chaplain during that time. Their job in this role was to sustain men who had to face their neighbors in a war over political and religious differences. [3] Some chaplains were used to control the spread of heterodox religious views, while others left the military in pursuit of doing what is right, and preaching the true message of God. This departure from the military added to the weakness of the chaplaincy. Another weakness, chaplains were wrongly accused or labeled as evil, when it fact, laymen were the culprits. It was laymen such as Henry Denne and Paul Hobson who gave the army a reputation for radical sectarianism; the further association of religious radicals with the chaplains was almost entirely independent of the chaplains themselves[4]. • 48. Literary Devices In The Stranger, By Albert Camus In the novel, The Stranger, by Albert Camus, Camus uses a variety of literary devices in order to create a moment of inward reflection from readers, in which we reflect on just how absurd our existence is. Camus expresses his critique through one major character, Meursault, and a few minor characters as well. Camus's use of irony pushed readers to look beyond the surface, and come to the conclusion of where the irony was displayed. Camus also made use of ironic moments in order to contrast the expectations of society, to how Meursault differs from that, all to gradually expose the hypocrisy of mankind. Camus generally uses this literary device in order make us evaluate our own selves and more importantly to display the fact that we as people can be truly happy, only if we accept our fate, instead of fighting it. In a way, he's suggesting we be more like Meursault. Examples of this would be the funeral caretaker insisting that Meursault view his mother's body, and Meursault continuously refusing. Camus does this to make people think: what exactly is wrong with Meursault not wanting to see his dead mother? Through this technique camus shows societal expectations of how people are supposed to mourn lost, and certain responses to lost are deemed abnormal. Thus Meursault's lack of grief automatically made him an outsider. Other uses of irony can be shown through Meursault's interactions with the chaplain, and the authority involved in his criminal case played out later on in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These were, interest in performance of liturgy, nature of warfare had changed and ambition of the new monarchy which believed that both their activities were divinely sanctioned and that the ruler bore personal responsibility for subjects' minds and souls. The revival of liturgy credited to the Carolingians and the application of a different kind of warfare in the middle east by the warriors of the first crusade that resulted in great success, would later give birth to what Doris calls "A new kind of war, a crusade, and with it, the liturgical rites that ... States such as Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Minnesota have suffered the most loss with each state losing 29 people to suicide. These deaths are not on the battle fields of Afghanistan or Iraq. In fact, the combat deaths during the exact same time frame for Army National Guard troops only adds up to 447. The situation has ... Specifically, training is foundational to everything in the Army and helps to shape a young teenage boy or girl into a tank mechanic, administrative specialist, infantry officer, or any number of military occupational specialties (MOS). Some jobs require the additional support of civilian training and this is true in the special staff branches such as the Judge Advocate Generals corps, Medical corps, and Chaplains corps. Army Chaplains in particular are required to obtain at least seventy–two seminary hours and a Master's degree in order to become a commissioned military officer. During their seminary time, future chaplains are trained in sermon preparations, church administration, and administering the ordinances of their faith group. However, they are rarely trained in addressing one of the most critical topics currently facing today's military personnel. Specifically, this would be training in counseling troops who are experiencing suicidal ideations. Another possible place for members of the Army chaplain corps to receive training in addressing a potential suicidal person would be during their initial military instruction time at the United States Army Chaplain Center and School (USACHCS) which is located in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Currently, USACHCS does not have training for this on their course curriculum for either the Chaplain Basic Officer Leaders Course (CHBOLC), the Chaplains Captain Career Course (C4), or the Brigade Functional Course for ... Chaplain's roles: Integrating spiritual care into the health system In this paper I will be discussing the role of the chaplain in the health care system, importance of collaboration between chaplains and health care professionals, discussion on ethics, and the roles that spirituality, culture and religion play in positive health outcomes. The occupation of a chaplain comes with many different roles. Their duties include comforting, listening, and being a guide as patients travel through a world of emotions. Here in the U.S. health care chaplains play a big role in providing spiritual care and support for patients. Referring back to the mini lecture on religion and health. Spiritual assessment and care are being integrated into patient care plans. Health care organizations are starting to see that when there is a lack of understanding of patient religious or cultural needs that the quality of care decreases. In the article Collaborating with Chaplains to Meet Spiritual Needs spirituality was defined as a broad concept that signifies a person's sense of purpose in life and connectedness to something greater themselves. It can include, but is not limited to, religious expressions (Meisenhelder, 2006 as cited in McClung, Grossoehme, Jacobson, 2006). Religion is often referred to as a set of communally held beliefs that are expressed publicly. Not everyone is religious, all people are spiritual (Koenig, McCullough, & Larson 2001 as cited in ... They named one of my main strengths that they saw show up in this verbatim–my ability to connect with people on a human level, to make people feel comfortable and at ease in my presence. They saw this in how the patient felt comfortable sharing her struggles concerning her hospital trip, but also about her daughter and her churches. To me, I did not see this as anything special; I thought it was normal and natural to focus not only on what was happening in the hospital, but on the patient's life more broadly–I want patients to know that they are more than their present illness, and that their present ... This awareness is not natural, but comes as a result of reflecting both individually and with others. Question 5: Impressions of Clinical Pastoral Education The most significant learning experience I had from CPE was a shift from doing things perfectly, to being a human to another human. When I started CPE, I was fearful I did not know what to "do." The scant few days of training and orientation seemed wholly inadequate for the task ahead–I was supposed to provide pastoral care? I was supposed to be a chaplain? Suddenly the vocation I had dreamed of doing for so long was before me, and I was terrified of messing it up. The clinical method of learning–action, reflection, action–seemed outrageous. I am a perfectionist, and I often want to know the exact steps in the procedure; I want to know what to do to achieve optimal results. I was immobilized by fear of failure. Our supervisor jokingly cajoled us with the phrase, "Get lost!" What started as his best advice to navigating the confusing world of the hospital became advice in a much broader sense. He emphasized that CPE was about getting lost and finding your way through, it was about letting go of a theology of perfection to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Suicide–a chaplains role. Nowhere are the services of chaplains needed more than in helping those veterans at–risk for suicide. The VA recognizes the important role of chaplains as front–line, mental–health providers for active–duty personnel and veterans, including the chaplain's role in suicide prevention (Ramchand, Acosta, Burns, Jaycox, & Pernin, 2011). Recently, attention has been paid to the prevailing suicide rate of veterans. In order to combat these rates, the VA and public health professionals have dedicated considerable time and effort to designing and implementing suicide prevention initiatives targeting Veteran populations (Kopacz 2013). • 69. The 7 Simple Principles Of Corporate Chaplaincy I have recently read Mark Cress' C–Change: How To Transform Any Business Through The 7 Simple Principles of Corporate Chaplaincy (Wake Forest, NC: Lamphier, 2005). This review will discuss and evaluate the seven principles – Christ, Call, Confidentiality, Compassion, Control, Consistency, and Conversion – and briefly discuss their relevance and importance and the way the author has presented and discussed each principle. In addition I will critique two things I disagree with, and in conclusion I will give a final assessment of the book including more personal opinion. Clear introduction that outlines your intentions Mark Cress is the founder and former president of Corporate Chaplains of America (CCA) with some 18 years' experience in corporate chaplaincy. According to his book's preface, by learning the '7 C's' of Corporate Chaplaincy will open up new perspectives of leadership and care for individuals, and by implementing them into the life of the business "will transform it for future success and eternally impact the lives of its employees in the process" (Cress, 2005, p. ii). Cress has written his book in seven short chapters – one for each of the principles – each a short story from the perspective of a fictional chaplain new to the job, Reverend Lonnie Peppers, based on real life situations. These situations reflect the principles and their importance, and how the situation changes or improves when each principle is practiced or a favourable outcome is reached when ... • 73. Importance Of Religious Leadership And What It Is Not Leadership Integration Paper The intent of this paper is to define religious leadership and what religious leadership is; what it is not. Explain how the understanding of religious leadership has changed throughout one's career. It will also discuss roles and responsibilities of religious leadership as a company grade Chaplain and field grade Chaplain. Finishing by discussing what emotional intelligence in leadership looks like through the lens of being a religious leader. To understand what Religious Leadership is one must determine the definition of the word "leadership." The Army describes leadership as, "An Army leader is anyone who by virtue of assumed role or assigned responsibility inspires and influences people to accomplish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Aubrey Malphurs (2003) believes that "those who lead set the example to those who follow." Someone showing religious leadership also demonstrates the capabilities of a good follower. One using the belief system of this writer would understand what a follower is through Biblical Scripture. "but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant." Luke 22:26 In other words a leader who serves is worth following but a leader who does not serve is not worth following, especially someone who follows self. Religious leadership can also describe a group of people following a particular belief system and having influence over others. Examples would be the Southern Baptist Convention or the Evangelical Church Alliance and many others. Although a particular group of people may not set out to provide religious leadership, they do lead by making decisions for members in that particular group. It could be considered a selective form of religious leadership. If a religious leader is one who influences others to follow a particular set of beliefs, then someone who does not influence others should not be considered as one who provides leadership. Within the Christian faith there are Pastors, Bishops, Priest, Elders, Deacons and other positions of authority. Their names were George Lansing Fox, Alexander David Goode, Clark Vandersall Poling, and John Patrick Washington. These men are significant because they helped other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their own life jackets when the supply ran out. Many would agree that the ending of the story was a shocker and few expected that conclusion. They would agree that the father–in–law proceeding with the funeral arrangements supporting the assumption the deceased person in the coffin was Edmund because he had the locket around his neck played into the authors plot twist.
