How Did Anti German Sentiment Affect Society
Three examples of how anti–German sentiment impacted society were the names of streets and
towns were changed, the names of food, and German was no longer taught in school. All of these
are examples of anti–German sentiment. Anti–German sentiment affected not only Germans back in
those times but also America today. One of the big ways anti–German sentiment impacted society
were the name changes to towns and streets. For example the town of Berlin, Michigan was changed
to Marne. "Because of the anti–German sentiment in America, in 1919 the town was renamed to
Marne"(University of Tampere, Finland). This should not have been "Americanized" since the
immigrants from Germany had to work hard to get here and find land for themselves. "In fact, as
late as 1910, about nine percent of the American population had been born in Germany or was of
German parentage" (UoTF). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Americans renamed sauerkraut 'liberty cabbage' and dachshunds 'liberty hounds'" (UoTF). This is
an example of how we "Americanized" this German element of society. This should not have been
"Americanized" since this hurt many businesses and it was unnecessary to make these changes.
"Cincinnati, with its large German–American population, removed pretzels from the free lunch
counters in saloons" (UoTF). This is another example of how changes to German related food was

Prebiotics and Probiotics
Fundamental of Human Nutrition.
Topic: Prebiotics and Probiotics
Prebiotics:
Definitions:
"A non–digestible food ingredient that beneficially affects the host by selectively stimulating the
growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon, and thus improves host
health."
Or
"A selectively fermented ingredient that allows specific changes, both in the composition and/or
activity in the gastrointestinal micro flora that confers benefits upon host well–being and health."
Types:
Fructo–oligosaccharides: These are found in fruits like tomatoes, banana, and kiwi. They feed the
good bacteria, and promote the absorption of vital vitamins and mineral like Vitamin D and calcium.
Xylo–oligosaccharides: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus are especially beneficial as
active transite bacteria helpful in uptaking nutrients.
Regulate Digestion
Perhaps the most notable function of probiotics is their ability to regulate digestion and normalize
the intestinal tract. The bacteria Lactobacilli, S. thermophilus and Bifidobacterium effectively
survived through the intestinal pathways and expelled through regulated bowel movements. This
illustrates the probiotic's digestion–enhancing qualities in helping to break down food within the
intestines while regulating the bowels.
Comparison of prebiotics and probiotics:
1. Bacteria
Probiotics and prebiotics mingle with the bacteria found in your body. * Probiotics are live bacteria
such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. Probiotics are absorbed in your intestines and help good
bacteria flourish and prevent bad bacteria from proliferating. * Prebiotics are non–digestible food
ingredients that enhance the effects of probiotics by stimulating bacteria in the colon. Prebiotics
provide nourishment to the good bacteria already in the gut. Prebiotics create a hostile environment
for bad bacteria. 2. Environmental Factors * Probiotics are highly sensitive to extreme temperatures,
live bacteria are affected by changes in heat, moisture, oxygen and acid. Probiotics can be killed as a
result of manufacturing processes, aging of the

Germany 's Tourism As An American Citizen
Many Americans have common misconceptions about Germany and its people even before visiting
the country or getting to know a German national. Germans are often perceived to be cold or mean
and that they dislike tourists. Many also believe that the language sounds harsh or is unromantic and
all Germans consume is sauerkraut, sausage, and beer. These views could be largely due to the way
Hollywood paints Germans out to be and American views on holidays such as Oktoberfest. As a
German as well as an American citizen, I have heard many of these stereotypes and can confidently
refute these claims and say that Germany and its people are actually very friendly and have a rich
and diverse culture.
Germany's tourism is on the rise as described in a report in a marketline industry profile. It describes
that the travel and tourism industry grew in 2015 by 3.3% and is "projected to maintain a similar
growth rate..."(Travel and Tourism in Germany 8). In fact, every time I visit I meet more and more
people who are touring Germany. A study done in 2013 by Andrew Hare and collegues was aimed to
see how Americans perceived Germans and Germany. It found that almost 60% of Americans had a
positive impression and thought it was modern, forward thinking, and economically powerful (Hare
et. All 3–59). Germany has also adopted many other cultures' customs from words to holidays to
music. When my mom was younger and living in Germany there was no Halloween! Now kids are

Research Paper On Poland
Poland is a very interesting country. Many people have never seen or visited or seen Poland before.
Poland is interesting because of its country and its cultural practices. Many people also have polish
roots that live in other places around the world. Poland is a nice country and has many things to
offer. Its climate is not too dissimilar to ours here in Florida. There are also many varieties of crops
grown in the country, along with the businesses and industries in Poland. "Poland's climate can be
described as a temperate climate with relatively cold winters and warm summers, which is greatly
influenced by oceanic air currents from the west, cold polar air from Scandinavia and Russia, as
well as warmer, sub–tropical air from the south." Poland also can grow many types of crops. They
grow wheat, rye, barley, and tobacco all across the country. The eastern European country also has
lots of industries. Poland does coal mining, chemicals, and shipbuilding as their main industries.

For a healthy body, make sure you are eating enough fiber.
How much fiber should you eat?
According to the USDA Dietary Guidelines for 2010, most Americans consume an average of only
15 grams of dietary fiber per day. Compare that with recommendations of the Institute of Medicine:
Men 50 years old and younger should have at least 38 grams of total fiber a day.
Women 50 years old and younger should have at least 25 grams.
Men 51 years old and older should have at least 30 grams.
Women 51 years and older should have at least 21 grams.
In addition to more fiber, you should be eating fewer refined carbs –– such as those found in
processed foods like white bread, white pasta and crackers.
What are high–fiber low carb foods?
This question is something of an oxymoron –– fiber is a carbohydrate; so are unrefined carbs. The
question should be re–phrased as, "What high–fiber foods are also low in unrefined carbs?
Remember the foods your mother said were "good for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

corn bran. A 28 gram serving of corn bran has 17 grams of dietary fiber –– comprising 74% of total
carbs and 60% of total weight.
What are good sources of fiber? Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables
There's an element of truth in the old adage, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Eating an
apple with skin gives you plenty of vitamins and minerals. There's 4 grams of dietary fiber in a
medium–sized apple, representing 14% of total fiber, 2% of total weight (There's a lot of water and
sugar content in an apple.)
If you have never tried avocados, try one. An avocado has 13 grams of dietary fiber representing
76% of total carbs, and 7% of total weight. (It also has water, but not much sugar.)

Kimchee and Fermentation Essay
Kimchee and Fermentation
Introduction
Each country has its own unique food item that is special and has been providing local community
with rich nutrition and various flavors. Such food item in Korea is called Kimchee. It was not well–
known to the world until the Olympic Games in 1988. This was the first time when numerous
people were exposed to such interesting flavors of Kimchee–spicy, fermented bok choy or Chinese
cabbage product. By fermentation, Koreans were able to preserve much nutritional values of the
cabbage, improve and develop layers of different flavors, and significantly increases shelf life of the
product. Moreover, Kimchee fermentation has been providing Koreans with rich source of vitamin

However, if stored for too long or not under optimal storage conditions, Kimchee will over acidify,
becoming too sour for enjoyable consumption.
Method and Procedure
Preparation of Cabbage
1. in 20 L of water, put 500 grams of salt to make brine solution 2. clean and cut 2 head of bok choy
so that it becomes 8 pieces 3. submerge bok choy into the brine solution for 8 hours 4. rinse bok
choy with fresh water and cut it to many small pieces
Preparation of Sugar
1. mix 100 gram of powdered rice with 200mL of water and bring to boil slowly
2. add 45 grams of salt into the viscous liquid (powdered rice + water)
Preparation of spices
1. blend 4 cloves of garlic, 8 chilli pepper, 2 small onion, 2 ginger, 2 oyster
Mixing & fermentation
1. add bok choy, viscous liquid (powdered rice + water + salt) with blend of spices
2. Place into a glass jar with open top. Put shrink wrap on the top with rubber bands to seal, instead
of using original metal/plastic lid.
Results and Discussion
For the first three days, little pH change is observed, this is due to Leuconostoc mesenteriodes that is
changing substrate to anaerobic condition, but not producing lactic acids (Mheen and Kwon 1984).
In addition, microbes are not large in number; therefore, more time is necessary for rapid growth of
the microbial community. As expected, pH of the Kimchee drops from 7 to 4.5 within the next 7

Fermentation Is A Natural Process
Fermentation is a natural process. Meaning that it has always been constantly happening whether we
are aware or not. When it comes to fermented foods, it speaks on a fermentation process that has
been manipulated for centuries by mankind. Humans have taken this pure process and used it as a
way to preserve flavors, and create exciting new flavors. There are the common foods that many are
aware of that undergo fermentation including bread, yogurt, wine, and beer. But the new trend in the
fermentation of foods focuses on vegetables and fruits like sauerkraut, pickles, and Kombucha.
What happens is these vegetables are soaked in salt water (or their own juice). Doing this allows for
the growth of bacteria, which in turn eat the vegetable sugars, and produce lactic acid. This acid
produces a product that has a sour, tart, or funky taste which all depend on the pH levels at the end
of the process and the palate of the person consuming the product. When the pH levels drop the
lactic acid levels go up, which cause the bad bacteria to die off, because they cannot survive acidic
conditions. While all of this happens the tart flavors begin to emerge.[1]
This fermentation of fruits and vegetables has allowed many new products to appear on the market.
One of these products has been a food item called kimchi. Kimchi is a traditional food, in the
Korean culture, of fermented vegetables which is often cabbage. It has an acquired taste that is very
pungent, and vibrant. Other vegetables

Fermented Food And Social Anxiety
Social anxiety is a miserable thing to suffer from. It certainly makes meeting new people and
making friends more difficult. Being the wallflower at every party makes you feel like every pair of
eyes in the room are focused on you, the nerd in the corner by himself, which makes enjoying
yourself in such situations that much harder. If you have this problem, you can at least take heart
that you are far from alone. It is the second most common type of anxiety that people suffer from
and it's estimated that nearly 20 million Americans have it.
There is fascinating new information about a relationship between fermented food and social
anxiety. It is not necessarily a direct effect from the food itself but rather how it affects the bacteria

New Braunfels Description
New Braunfels is a fairly large city in Texas close to the city of San Antonio. It is famous for the
Comal river, Guadalupe river, and Schlitterbahn. The primary religion is Catholic Christian with
17.5% of the population practicing it. The founders are Prince Carl of Solms–Braunfels. Some
celebrations that they have are Wurstfest, the Comal County fair, and a Craft Beer and Wineries
celebration. The city of New Braunfels was founded on March 21, 1845 by Prince Carl of Solms–
Braunfels. He and a bunch of other settlers built a stockade to protect against supposedly
cannibalistic Native Americans. By the summertime, more than 300 settlers had come to New
Braunfels. More people, specifically Hispanics and Lipan Indians, moved in every Spring for sheep
shearing. People soon took advantage of the Comal river and established stores. Since then, New
Braunfels has become one of the largest cities in Texas. As of 2016, the population was 73,959

August 2, 1979. The first thingy built was a 60 foot tall tower that had 4 slides. Honestly, that side of
Schlitterbahn is a bit disappointing, pretty much the only good thing is Dragon's Revenge. The other
side of Schlitterbahn was built much later and includes the highest–rated waterslide in the world.

floating cooler full of drinks. (Probably beer.) It takes about 3 hours and on the Comal river, there's a

The American Home Front During World War 1
(Just as a side note, I had pictures of the posters in the original paper but couldn 't transfer them to

War I changed America greatly. It had an obvious effect on the way we handle business on the home
front. Propaganda, rationing, and political views all played a part on American citizens in World War
I. "Propaganda was a huge tool used to sway citizens toward a particular political view. "The U.S.A.

Political views played a great part in shaping America during World War I. Previously, every war
was because of a great and direct threat to American existence. In the case of World War I, we went
to war to preserve democracy. Germany certainly wouldn 't have wiped us off the map. America also
tried to maintain neutrality, electing Woodrow Wilson on the slogan "He kept us out of war."
(fff.org) The American people were easily manipulated into anti–German and pro–war beliefs. More
"American–like" names were given to certain things. Hamburgers became Salisbury steaks because
Hamburg was located in Germany. Sauerkraut became liberty cabbage, because sauerkraut was a
German name. Beethoven 's music was banned, and burning of German books was common. "These
techniques were highly successful. The government found that overt and subtle forms of propaganda
fanned the requisite passions of pride and prejudice to fight a total war in Europe. Indeed, aggressive
propaganda helped to skirt constitutional and statutory limitations on war policies — policies that
would never pass rational scrutiny in peacetime. Empirically, it proved that government propaganda
aimed at arousing strong feelings of American nationalism could facilitate the exercise of extralegal

Joan Didion On Writing A Notebook Summary
Joan Didion's On Writing a Notebook portrays her own idea of the purpose of a notebook, being a
reconciliation tool she uses to remind and connect her with her past self. Didion explains the
significance of the of a notebook by telling the reader what a notebook is not. She then continues her
idea by describing to readers what a notebook actually is, incorporating why personal notebook has
meaning. Each individual's notebook, though unique in content and ownership, carries the same
purpose that Didion's did.
In the beginning of her essay, Didion focuses on explaining what her idea of a notebook is not and

Parody: A Fictional Narrative
At 11:34 p.m. Marty Wilkins pushed the button for the 24th floor of his apartment elevator. The
metal doors slid noiselessly across greased tracks and he walked to the window at end of the muted
yellow hallway. He climbed out onto the fire escape, scaled up its ladder, and padded silently across
the roof. Marty sat on the knee high retaining wall that bordered the roof, and his feet hung loosely
into the nothingness. He liked the way the wind bounced up from the street, bringing with it the
smells and sounds of the Friday night. The old German bratwurst vender's stale sauerkraut, the
bachelorette party–girl pissing behind a dumpster, the thick accent of the transplanted taxi driver, the
clopping of the male stripper's cowboy boots down the front steps of the apartment. The night and
all of its sounds and smells swirled up the apartment building and pushed against the soles of
Marty's shoes. He let the wind move his feet for him. Due to the sharp angle of the retaining wall

Benefits Of Glutathione: Detox The Body
Glutathione Supportive Foods Help Detox the Body: A regular, daily the consumption of glutathione
supportive foods is a good way to maintain high amounts of glutathione in the body and chip away
at the stockpile of toxins which may have accumulated over time and continue to ingest on a daily
basis. Food sources that increase glutathione do so by providing the precursors of glutathione, or
enhance the production by various means. Foods that are high in glutathione precursors and
therefore help boost glutathione levels naturally work best when eaten raw or fermented like in
sauerkraut or whey since they are heat sensitive. Food resources of glutathione precursors include

cereals like Trix, Cocoa Puffs, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Trix contains "Corn Syrup" ("Trix™
Bulkpak Cereal") (one tablespoon has 16G of sugar), trisodium phosphate (also used in stain
removers and general cleaners), processed sugars, and more. Some of Cocoa Puffs' ingredients are
cocoa processed with alkali, corn syrup, processed sugars, fructose (a type of sugar), Refiners Syrup
( processed inverted sugar syrup), and more. The ingredients in Cinnamon Toast Crunch are,
maltodextrin, processed sugars, fructose, dextrose, trisodium phosphate, soy lecithin, and even more
ingredients. Many of these are processed/ refined foods. According to Eva Selhub, from Harvard,
scientists have found a correlation between "a diet high in refined sugars and impaired brain
function – and even a worsening of symptoms of mood disorders, such as depression", corn syrup,
fructose, Refiners Syrup, and dextrose are all examples of refined ... Show more content on

Add fermented foods like kimchi, miso, sauerkraut, pickles, or kombucha. You also might want to

Captain James Cook: Superhero on the Seas
Introduction
James Cook was an European explorer who went on to chart and discover new lands near Australia.

He didn't want to see his crew die so he made sure that everyone stayed healthy no matter what. In

health of his men that he even had two sailors whipped because they would not eat the right foods,
Whipping, called flogging, was common punishment 200 years ago" (Scheller). Captain James
Cook was strict, but he only had rules to keep his crew intact. Without being strict and having many
rules, half of Cook's crew would be dead. In a website titled Study.com the author elucidates,
"Captain Cook was known as a strict and fair captain, with many rules for his crew. These rules
were meant to keep the crew safe and healthy through long journey's" (History Courses). To add on,
selling was a very demanding job. You had to make sure you were sailing to the right place, your
crew was safe, and your ship was intact. Captain James Cook was just doing his job when he was

German Culture Vs American Culture Essay
Coming from a German culture, my family stays traditional in the way we celebrate holidays and eat
food. The differences between German and American culture are very evident in their holiday
traditions and meals, but there are also some similarities, such as language, that are often
overlooked. When I think of the differences between German and American culture, one of the first
things that comes to mind is how Christmas is celebrated. In Germany, it is always celebrated on
Christmas Eve. Instead of Santa, children are told that if they behave well, "Kris Kringle" or
"Christkindl", meaning Christ Child, will leave presents for them under the tree. While waiting for
the presents to come, the family will gather around the table to eat dinner

Fermented Foods In Ancient Cultures
Crunchy pickles, tangy sauerkraut and refreshing kombucha tea have more in common than you
might think. Ancient cultures knew there were great health benefits to be gained from regularly
consuming fermented foods and beverages and when properly prepared, they can provide the same
benefits for us today.
The process of fermentation produces beneficial enzymes and lactic acid, which inhibits the growth
of harmful bacteria and encourages the production of probiotics, which includes lactobacilli. This
increases the body's ability to digest foods consumed. It enhances the body's ability to absorb the
rich vitamins and nutrients found in them. Fermented foods also help to regulate the acids found in
the stomach, increasing the levels produced or

Fermentation Mic Essay
Using Selective Media to Monitor the Fermentation Process of Cabbage and Cucumber, for
Fourteen Days
Abstract:
Introduction:
The goal of the ecological succession lab is to demonstrate succession with the fermentation of
cabbage and cucumbers. The cabbage will ferment into sauerkraut and the cucumber will ferment to
pickles during fermentation process that will changes the species structure and the community of
time. During the fermentation process we watched the pH become more acidic, since the desired
bacteria would produce lactic acid. The lactic acid would control by inhibiting the spoilage of the
cabbage or the cucumber. This was seen by the increase of the acidity in both of the environment,
which was seen as the pH went ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additional materials were, pH strips, test tubes, P–200 micropipette, 3–mL syringe and fermentation
jar. The pH was measured with the aid of pH indicator strips, to determine if the pH was dropping or
rising. The dilutions were performed with the P–200 micropippetor, the dilution factors changes
through the experiment, in relation to the bacterial growth and ranged from 10–1 to 10–5. The
fermentation jar was packed with ¼ of a head of lettuce and 5% salt–water solution from the sink.
The 5% solution was achieved by using 25g of salt in 500mL of H2O. The TSA agar plates were the
control environments, one aerobic and the other anaerobic. The WN5 was for the anaerobic and
microaerophilic conditions and had cyclohexane and 5% salt that selects for bacteria. The PS agar
dish had CFC supplement (cetrimide, fucidin and cephalonidine) and Irgasam. The EC dish had bile
salt that selected for Gram–negative bacteria. The LSA plate allowed for the differentiation of
lactobacilli and streptococci. All of the above plates were incubated at room temperature of 25°C.
The plates were counted for formed colonies on the following days: 0,2,7,9 and 14; also the pH was
taken. The pH was taken by removing some of the fermentation liquid and placed on the indicator
strip.
Results:
The cabbage pH went from a neutral 7.0 to 4.0, which was relatively acidic. Refer to figure 1 and 2
to see how the population of each bacterium changed from day 0 to 14.

The Sausage In Homer's Odyssey

oldest forms of processed foods is already mentioned in Homer's Odyssey „As when a man besides
a great fire has filled a sausage with fat and blood and turns it this way and that and is very eager to
get it quickly roasted..."
By – 1st Century A.D. – Gaius, the cook of Emperor Nero Claudius Caesar (54 –68) is credited with
inventing the first wiener. It seemed that a roast pig had not been cleaned properly before cooking.
Gaius slit its belly and out popped the intestines puffed up and hollow. These he stuffed with ground

However there is also a possibility that credit should be given to Johann Georghehner, a butcher
from Coburg, Germany, who later introduced it to Frankfurt.
Whatever its humble beginnings the frankfurter arrived in New York with German immigrants in the
1860's and were sold from pushcarts in New York City's Bowery.
In 1880 a German peddler, Antonoine Feuchtwanger started selling sausages on the streets of St.
Louis, Missouri. At that time, the sausage wasn't encased in a bun and Feuchtwanger provided
people with white gloves to keep them from burning their hands. Customers often kept the gloves
for themselves and finally his wife came up with the idea of a split bun. Feuchtwanger's brother– in–
law, who was a baker made long soft rolls that fit the sausage and so the hot dog and bun were born.
He called them "red hots."

The Pros And Cons Of Bacteria
When bacteria are thought of, germs and sickness come to mind. Bacteria is the stuff that you don't
want to encounter because it will make you sick. Many times, this an accurate assumption. There is
Escherichia coli; these gram–negative bacteria cause diarrheas and can sometimes cause urinary
tract infections pneumonia. They can be difficult to treat due to drug resistance. (Center for Disease
Control, 2017) There are gram positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus or
"staph") Staph as its commonly called can cause skin infections like boils and cellulitis. Most staph
infections are not life threatening but they can become so in the form of sepsis, pneumonia and
osteomyelitis (Minnesota Department of Health Fact Sheet, 2010) There are food borne bacteria
such as Clostridium botulinum are anaerobic, rod shaped bacteria that causes the disease botulism.
Botulism is a life–threatening disease that affects the nervous system it is commonly associated with
improperly done home canning. (WHO, 2016) While there is no argument that there are many
bacteria that we as humans would do will to stay away from it is also true that we need
microorganisms in our lives. From disposing of bacteria in waste water to vaccines to the food we
eat we rely on bacteria to keep us healthy. Every time a person puts food down the garbage disposal
or flushes the toilet waste goes into the sewer system. These residential sources of waste water along

My Family Culture
Family Culture, Ethnicity, and Development The dominant ethnicity of my family is Polish. As
people in Poland, my grandmother on my birth father's side of the family followed several cultural
practices. While spending time with her, I listened to stories of her ethnicity and culture. Antoinette
was her name similar to the Catholic saint Antoinette Roussel. Societies in Poland name their
children after the Catholic saints that originate closer to their child's month of birth. Once the polish
resided in the United States for a while, they named their children the same as the Catholic saints.
However, they did not automatically select a saint's name closest to their child's birth month
(Obidinski & Zand, 1987, p. 100). Similarly, William and Antoinette were my grandmother's
parent's names. After several Catholic saints, my grandmother prearranged my name. Two of my
sisters designate after saint's that do not relate to their birthday. Consequently, Antoinette and
Colette are their names.
Catholicism was an enduring lifestyle for my grandmother since childhood. Due to armies of

question to ask yourself : What have immigrants done to build America. Here are some comparisons
and contrasts about the two essays. In Quindlen's story she talks about how she moved here as a
young child and how the experience was for her. In the passage Kennedy wrote he talks about how
immigration has impacted America. In these two stories Quindlen has a viewpoint from immigration
where as, Kennedy has a viewpoint as the president. Both have them have different emotions and

How Did Anti German Sentiment Affect Society

  • 1. How Did Anti German Sentiment Affect Society Three examples of how anti–German sentiment impacted society were the names of streets and towns were changed, the names of food, and German was no longer taught in school. All of these are examples of anti–German sentiment. Anti–German sentiment affected not only Germans back in those times but also America today. One of the big ways anti–German sentiment impacted society were the name changes to towns and streets. For example the town of Berlin, Michigan was changed to Marne. "Because of the anti–German sentiment in America, in 1919 the town was renamed to Marne"(University of Tampere, Finland). This should not have been "Americanized" since the immigrants from Germany had to work hard to get here and find land for themselves. "In fact, as late as 1910, about nine percent of the American population had been born in Germany or was of German parentage" (UoTF). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Americans renamed sauerkraut 'liberty cabbage' and dachshunds 'liberty hounds'" (UoTF). This is an example of how we "Americanized" this German element of society. This should not have been "Americanized" since this hurt many businesses and it was unnecessary to make these changes. "Cincinnati, with its large German–American population, removed pretzels from the free lunch counters in saloons" (UoTF). This is another example of how changes to German related food was ... • 5. Prebiotics and Probiotics Fundamental of Human Nutrition. Topic: Prebiotics and Probiotics Prebiotics: Definitions: "A non–digestible food ingredient that beneficially affects the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon, and thus improves host health." Or "A selectively fermented ingredient that allows specific changes, both in the composition and/or activity in the gastrointestinal micro flora that confers benefits upon host well–being and health." Types: Fructo–oligosaccharides: These are found in fruits like tomatoes, banana, and kiwi. They feed the good bacteria, and promote the absorption of vital vitamins and mineral like Vitamin D and calcium. Xylo–oligosaccharides: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus are especially beneficial as active transite bacteria helpful in uptaking nutrients. Regulate Digestion Perhaps the most notable function of probiotics is their ability to regulate digestion and normalize the intestinal tract. The bacteria Lactobacilli, S. thermophilus and Bifidobacterium effectively survived through the intestinal pathways and expelled through regulated bowel movements. This illustrates the probiotic's digestion–enhancing qualities in helping to break down food within the intestines while regulating the bowels. Comparison of prebiotics and probiotics: 1. Bacteria Probiotics and prebiotics mingle with the bacteria found in your body. * Probiotics are live bacteria such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. Probiotics are absorbed in your intestines and help good bacteria flourish and prevent bad bacteria from proliferating. * Prebiotics are non–digestible food ingredients that enhance the effects of probiotics by stimulating bacteria in the colon. Prebiotics provide nourishment to the good bacteria already in the gut. Prebiotics create a hostile environment for bad bacteria. 2. Environmental Factors * Probiotics are highly sensitive to extreme temperatures,

  • 10. Germany 's Tourism As An American Citizen Many Americans have common misconceptions about Germany and its people even before visiting the country or getting to know a German national. Germans are often perceived to be cold or mean and that they dislike tourists. Many also believe that the language sounds harsh or is unromantic and all Germans consume is sauerkraut, sausage, and beer. These views could be largely due to the way Hollywood paints Germans out to be and American views on holidays such as Oktoberfest. As a German as well as an American citizen, I have heard many of these stereotypes and can confidently refute these claims and say that Germany and its people are actually very friendly and have a rich and diverse culture. Germany's tourism is on the rise as described in a report in a marketline industry profile. It describes that the travel and tourism industry grew in 2015 by 3.3% and is "projected to maintain a similar growth rate..."(Travel and Tourism in Germany 8). In fact, every time I visit I meet more and more people who are touring Germany. A study done in 2013 by Andrew Hare and collegues was aimed to see how Americans perceived Germans and Germany. It found that almost 60% of Americans had a positive impression and thought it was modern, forward thinking, and economically powerful (Hare et. All 3–59). Germany has also adopted many other cultures' customs from words to holidays to music. When my mom was younger and living in Germany there was no Halloween! Now kids are starting to catch on and ... Poland is interesting because of its country and its cultural practices. Many people also have polish roots that live in other places around the world. Poland is a nice country and has many things to offer. Its climate is not too dissimilar to ours here in Florida. There are also many varieties of crops grown in the country, along with the businesses and industries in Poland. "Poland's climate can be described as a temperate climate with relatively cold winters and warm summers, which is greatly influenced by oceanic air currents from the west, cold polar air from Scandinavia and Russia, as well as warmer, sub–tropical air from the south." Poland also can grow many types of crops. They grow wheat, rye, barley, and tobacco all across the country. The eastern European country also has lots of industries. The people dress more formal often and wear big jackets and long pants during the winter, as we only sometimes wear a light sweatshirt. Foods in Poland are different than foods in America. • 18. Carbs Research Paper For a healthy body, make sure you are eating enough fiber. How much fiber should you eat? According to the USDA Dietary Guidelines for 2010, most Americans consume an average of only 15 grams of dietary fiber per day. Compare that with recommendations of the Institute of Medicine: Men 50 years old and younger should have at least 38 grams of total fiber a day. Women 50 years old and younger should have at least 25 grams. Men 51 years old and older should have at least 30 grams. Women 51 years and older should have at least 21 grams. In addition to more fiber, you should be eating fewer refined carbs –– such as those found in processed foods like white bread, white pasta and crackers. What are high–fiber low carb foods? This question is something of an oxymoron –– fiber is a carbohydrate; so are unrefined carbs. The question should be re–phrased as, "What high–fiber foods are also low in unrefined carbs? Such food item in Korea is called Kimchee. It was not well– known to the world until the Olympic Games in 1988. This was the first time when numerous people were exposed to such interesting flavors of Kimchee–spicy, fermented bok choy or Chinese cabbage product. • 28. Fermentation Is A Natural Process Fermentation is a natural process. Meaning that it has always been constantly happening whether we are aware or not. When it comes to fermented foods, it speaks on a fermentation process that has been manipulated for centuries by mankind. Humans have taken this pure process and used it as a way to preserve flavors, and create exciting new flavors. There are the common foods that many are aware of that undergo fermentation including bread, yogurt, wine, and beer. But the new trend in the fermentation of foods focuses on vegetables and fruits like sauerkraut, pickles, and Kombucha. What happens is these vegetables are soaked in salt water (or their own juice). Doing this allows for the growth of bacteria, which in turn eat the vegetable sugars, and produce lactic acid. This acid produces a product that has a sour, tart, or funky taste which all depend on the pH levels at the end of the process and the palate of the person consuming the product. When the pH levels drop the lactic acid levels go up, which cause the bad bacteria to die off, because they cannot survive acidic conditions. While all of this happens the tart flavors begin to emerge.[1] This fermentation of fruits and vegetables has allowed many new products to appear on the market. One of these products has been a food item called kimchi. Kimchi is a traditional food, in the Korean culture, of fermented vegetables which is often cabbage. It has an acquired taste that is very pungent, and vibrant. Other vegetables ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The primary religion is Catholic Christian with 17.5% of the population practicing it. The founders are Prince Carl of Solms–Braunfels. Some celebrations that they have are Wurstfest, the Comal County fair, and a Craft Beer and Wineries celebration. The city of New Braunfels was founded on March 21, 1845 by Prince Carl of Solms– Braunfels. He and a bunch of other settlers built a stockade to protect against supposedly cannibalistic Native Americans. By the summertime, more than 300 settlers had come to New Braunfels. More people, specifically Hispanics and Lipan Indians, moved in every Spring for sheep shearing. People soon took advantage of the Comal river and established stores. The first link in the bibliography has tons of WW1 propaganda posters you can use.) World War I changed America greatly. It had an obvious effect on the way we handle business on the home front. Propaganda, rationing, and political views all played a part on American citizens in World War I. "Propaganda was a huge tool used to sway citizens toward a particular political view. Previously, every war was because of a great and direct threat to American existence. In the case of World War I, we went to war to preserve democracy. Germany certainly wouldn 't have wiped us off the map. America also tried to maintain neutrality, electing Woodrow Wilson on the slogan "He kept us out of war." (fff.org) The American people were easily manipulated into anti–German and pro–war beliefs. More "American–like" names were given to certain things. Hamburgers became Salisbury steaks because Hamburg was located in Germany. Sauerkraut became liberty cabbage, because sauerkraut was a German name. Beethoven 's music was banned, and burning of German books was common. "These techniques were highly successful. The government found that overt and subtle forms of propaganda fanned the requisite passions of pride and prejudice to fight a total war in Europe. The metal doors slid noiselessly across greased tracks and he walked to the window at end of the muted yellow hallway. He climbed out onto the fire escape, scaled up its ladder, and padded silently across the roof. Marty sat on the knee high retaining wall that bordered the roof, and his feet hung loosely into the nothingness.
