The song "Sit Still, Look Pretty" by Daya is a powerful number that Jean–Louise (Scout) Finch in
Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird would love; it voices her tomboyish actions through a song that
seems like something she would listen to and live by. Women have come a long way in history and
have gained countless rights in the process. Although Scout is told to dress as a proper lady by every
other woman in Maycomb, she stayed stubborn; her stubbornness was reciprocated by other
suffragettes, and that is how they acquired multiple rights. Gender roles for women have developed
dramatically over the years, from 1930 to the present women now are more respected and are not

me–'what are you doing in those overalls? You should be in a dress and camisole, young lady!'"(Lee
105). Miss Dubose was raised in a time where being sophisticated was the only job a woman was
actually allowed to do. She thinks that Scout is sullying the Finch name in this passage since she is
acting very boyish when she should be trying to act in the same manner as the other little girls do;
wearing dresses and not playing around outside like boys. Aunt Alexandra also reprimands Scout for
not being like other girls, and Aunt Alexandra moves in with Atticus due to the fact that she is not
ecstatic that Calpurnia is the only female influence in her life. In her eyes, Calpurnia does not live a

This grandiloquence is a manifestation of hypocrisy in the novel because her behaviour towards
others is atrocious, yet she expects the best manners from Scout. Calpurnia is a much more positive
caregiver, as she is a strict disciplinarian, but to a lesser degree than Aunt Alexandra. Likewise she is
not a hypocrite; she could comment on the ways of white people because she has been raised in a
white environment.

2015 is a generation of tremendous diversity in America. In society we see individuals who possess
many different qualities, such as containing different body sizes, different skin colors, to different

Wolf describes the beauty myth as a powerful belief system, where a woman's self–worth is
measured by her beauty. Wolf explains that women are in obsession with the physical perfection of
their body and will do anything such as spending countless amount of money in makeup and hours

People may misjudge them and receive a bad reputation. For example, the article, "Raisman says
she was threatened, ignored over abuse claims", shows how she and Tom Robinson were both
threatened standing up for what happened. They both went to court to tell their side of the story and

Who are the "mockingbirds"? Written by Harper Lee in 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird follows the
early life of a young girl named Jean Louise (Scout) Finch, who lives the fictional city of Maycomb
Alabama, USA. Although it was written in 1960, the novel takes place in the early 1930's during the

Are sports programs for children and teenagers too intense? Youth sports are being questioned by
the public as being too intense. One of the reasons for this is that sport specialization is up to a
record high 25 percent(Sirs). This means that one in every four people are only playing one sport
which can lead to injuries and psychological issues. Another issue is injuries in youth sports. Most
specifically football is being researched intensely for head injuries that can hurt the children for the

One of the major reasons why adult think youth sports are being too intense is that sports
specialization is at a record high. Although this is true it is still only at 25 percent. Sports
specialization should not happen until 15 or 16 according to a harvard study(Sirs). If 25 percent of
people are specializing in one sports that mean 75 percent of youth are not focusing on one sport. So
even though some youth are specializing in one sport he majority of of youth players do not focus

The United States of America is one of the best countries in the world. The country considers its
start as a nation to be 1776, and since then, America has stood for freedom all around the world. The
USA has had military supremacy for years; considered one of the only superpowers in the world
currently. Most importantly, however, is that it is a melting pot of different ethnic groups and
cultures. Sadly, most places in America do not contain this important standard of no prejudice. After
the Plessy v. Ferguson case, subtle racism became more abundant throughout the south, and
although the government resolved main problem in the 60's, racism still abides on both ends today.
In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation. This act freed thousands
of slaves, and enacted the abolition of slavery after the north won the Civil War. In turn, legislation
passed many amendments prohibiting any discrimination of blacks. In 1883, the Supreme Court
ruled against this amendment, they ruled that, "The 14th Amendment did not give Congress
authority to prevent discrimination by private individuals." So when the states got the power to
decide, most states decided to pass laws known as Jim Crow laws. These laws segregated blacks and

understand how people are commonly judged about their appearance before they are fully
understood. The people of Maycomb wrongly judge characters like Arthur Radley before fully
understanding the circumstances of his situation and the pain he has been through. In the novel, To
Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, appearance vs reality is present throughout the book in regards
to certain characters who judged by their appearance but not by who they are. Three significant
characters are judged solely on their appearance despite that in reality, these characters are good,
honest people. The infamous Boo Radley has been viewed as a monster to the town of Maycomb
