A Short Story My Chickens By Steve Squack
Once upon a time, a chicken named Steve Shays and was enjoying life and earning a living wage
when one day a muscular and big man grabbed him by his neck and threw him into a rickety old
cage with rust and mesh and barely enough room to move his legs. There were chickens big and
small, old and young stuck in other cages. Some of the chickens were not as lucky as he was. Some
had broken wings or eyeballs that were poked out of their sockets. Then the cages started to move
slowly, but the ground blurred and wind rushed down his feathers. He felt as if his wings and
feathers are about to be ripped to shreds. Clouds of dust burned his eyes and lungs. After many days
of dehydration and starvation the truck finally stopped at a looming wood building. ... Show more

Bob jumps in front of him and saves Steve but killing himself. Steve was mortified. The human
laughs and grabbed Steve and put him in a bag. Steve squacks and the evil human punches him in
the face knocking him out. When Steve woke up the first thing he saw was another cell full dirt and
grime. There were also other chickens in the cage. Right then a human walks in takes two of my
comrades and stoots the trough the head and laughs saying something about killing two birds with
one stone. After the humans left Steve ordered a conference, and decides for war or at least
kamikaze attacks. One of the chickens provided some sort of bright red stick and a match. Steve and
the others stuffed the stick into one of the dead comrades. When another human comes in Steve lit
the fuse and then they all ran out locking the human inside. They ran until they came back to the
barn, bu5t they were too late. a jet loomed over the barn and dropped a bomb. The bomb sored down
like an angel of death. The barn blew to smithereens. Dead bodies of so many friends and
acquaintances flew out. Steve's' mom landed next to him. He did not know that his mom was in the
coop. He just broke down and started to cry. Tears streaming down his cheeks dripping onto his
mother;s managed body. Then she opened her eyes and said " I always loved you". Then she closed
her eyes for the last time and smiled. Steve yelled out, "NOOOOOOOOO." Then the bears and

The Myth Of The Giant Devils
The Creation and Elimination
Before man and woman were ever created, enormous monsters that stood over a few stories high
with sharp teeth, enormous feet, and scaly skin roamed the Earth. There were also some who weren't
monsters at all. These creatures tried to keep to themselves and stay away from the monsters that
could attack them. The monsters were simply called the Giant Devils and the ones who weren't
harmful were called the Peaceful Ones. No one knows how all of these creatures were put on the
land. They were the first inhabitants of the earth. But only one group of them could stay.
The Peaceful Ones varied in size, unlike the Giant Devils. Some of them were tiny, as small as a
dandelion. Some were just as big as the Giant Devils, if not bigger. The Peaceful Ones only ate very
small amounts of meat, herbs, grasses, fruits, leaves, and other plants. They did not believe in killing
others for food. They tried their best to make friends with every peaceful dinosaur they came across.

They tore into any dinosaur they caught a glimpse of, sometimes even their own kind. All Giant
Devils walked at towering heights with great, long legs and massive heads that are filled with anger
and sharp teeth. Their favorite prey was the Peaceful Ones.
Eventually, the Peaceful Ones had enough. Watching their population diminish because of heartless
monsters was causing them pain and worry. They worried that the entire population of the Peaceful
Ones was going to go extinct if they did not do something. Although they all thought the same thing,
only one Peaceful One spoke

Modern Humans And The Existence Of The Planet
Modern humans have been on Earth for more than 200,000 years. Although many people feel that
200,000 years is a fairly long time for us to have existed as a species, it is quite the opposite. The
earth is estimated to have been made 4.54 billion years ago. Life as we know it is estimated to have
begun 4 billion years ago. When comparing the existence of the human race to the existence of the
planet we live on or the existence of all forms of life, it becomes very apparent that the humans
species time on this planet has been relatively miniscule. If you took the entire history of the 13.7
billion year old universe and compressed it into one year, the first humans would not even show up
until 10:30 pm on December 31st.
Without having a good understanding of how short our stay on this planet has been, it's very hard for
people to imagine a future where humans are no longer an existing species. With how short of a time
span we have existed here, and how many species have come and gone in the history of earth, it is
not too irrational to fear the possibility of human extinction. Clearly this isn't a threat that is
anywhere near imminent, but that is no reason to give it any less thought. A huge flaw of the human
race is that we often tend to be short–sighted. We focus on problems that are affecting us now or will
affect us in the near future, and this is the reason why getting people to do anything to prevent
climate change or even just accept is so difficult. The possibility

The Negative Effects Of Godzilla
Godzilla, Gojira in Japanese, is a monster we are all familiar with, but its context in Japan is
frequently overlooked. Godzilla is thought of as a cheezy, poorly made dinosaur movie that ripped
off King Kong. But in reality, Godzilla is a symbol of how Japan dealt with the aftermath of the
bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, and the Castle Bravo bomb in 1954. Breathing
nuclear radiation instead of fire, created by the radiation of nuclear bombing, Godzilla shows the
world how monstrous the American bombs were through a lens that everyone can relate to: film.
After the bombings in March of 1945, Japan was dealing with over 200,000 people suffering from
nuclear bomb related issues.1 Surprisingly, rather than the nation ... Show more content on

Due to the placement of the explosion, some of the nuclear fallout settled on a Japanese fishing boat
called Daigo Fukuryū Maru translating to "Fifth Lucky Dragon." The fishermen on the boat said
they saw a large flash of light. The entire crew suffered radiation poisoning and barely made it back
to shore. The fish on the Fifth Lucky Dragon made it to the fish markets, people became so cautious
of eating radiation–affected fish that fishmonger's business suffered for weeks.4 The explosion
subjected the adjacent atolls to the east to radiation contamination. Unsuspecting citizens were
unaware it was radioactive fallout. Children even played in the fluffy white ashes like they would
play in snow. The destruction cause concern across the world and "generated worldwide backlash
against atmospheric nuclear testing." 4 By 1972, the effects of nuclear radiation on Bikini atoll were
declared by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commision to be minimal enough for people to move back.
More than 100 people returned to Bikini atoll that year. In 1978 the atoll was evacuated due to
"unacceptably high levels of radiation."5 The United States occupied Japan until 1952 (the year
Godzilla was released).
In 1953, an American film called "The Beast of 20,000 Fathoms" was released. Similarly to Gojira,
a nuclear explosion wakes up a prehistoric monster called "rhedosaurus" which destroys Manhattan.
The test bombs that awaken rhedosaurus are detonated in the Arctic. This small piece of the

The Most Successful People With Adhd
The national institutes of health writes that individuals diagnosed with ADHD experiencing
symptoms in a more severity more frequently and their symptoms directly affect their functions at
school or work. (4) I would argue that in some cases the heightened symptoms these individuals deal
with are the same symptoms that any one individual deals with throughout their life. There are
certainly those individuals that thrive because of these symptoms. Elite Daily wrote an article titled
The 10 Most Successful People With ADHD these individual include but aren't limited to: Walt
Disney; The Founder Of Disneyland, Jim Carrey; Actor/Comedian/Producer, Will Smith;
Actor/Producer/Rapper, John F. Kennedy; The 35th President Of The United States, and ... Show

I Believe this is a good point because all to often people try to conform others to one base line
standard of behavior when in reality there are those who are more extrinsically motivated and those
that are intrinsic motivated. What is normal in today's society, diversity should be welcomed
because it insures the success of any given species. Those individuals who have the ability to
recognize their passions and pursue them with such determination should be seen as a higher
intellect than those that fall in line with everyone else. When applying for a job often times you hear
employers specified that they're looking for out–of–the–box thinkers often times those thinkers are
people that possess the symptoms of this alleged disorder. Consider if every individual pursued their
passions and could learn through their passions. Take for example the child who hyper focuses on
dinosaurs; this child doesn't show any interest in math or science–but loves to read and talk about
dinosaurs. Two things can happen Child refuses to associate himself anything not having to do with
dinosaurs, or an instructor/parent recognizes the opportunity to introduce dinosaurs into other
aspects in a child's life such as math and science. If you have two tyrannosaurus and five
Alamosaurus how many dinosaurs you have? An instructor could discuss the difference between a

Joey Water Cycle
Hi I'm Joey the water droplet. Did you know I have been around since the Dinosaurs roamed the
earth? Yes, I know it's crazy, but it's true. All water has stayed the same since the beginning of time.
Also I am lucky to be apart of the water cycle.
The water cycle it is so fun! Well, as you would guess the water cycle could have happened over a
million or more times because the water always stays the same. The three phases of the water cycle
is evaporation,Condensation, and precipitation. If you ask me, precipitation is my favorite because
you don't know when or where you are going to land.
The beginning of the water cycle is evaporation. My experience with evaporation is really fun! You

Precipitation is a pretty fun one too, you don't know when you land when you land. One time I fell
in California, and another time I fell in Africa, those two places stood out to me. Precipitation is
when it either rains, hails, or snows.
When I fell in California they were in a drought and I thought you would like to know about it. As a
water droplet, landing somewhere where there is a drought is important, because you make an
impact in the drought. In California the drought has been around for six years, but recently there has
been flooding and really heavy rain, but why are we still in a drought? Well, because since we were
in the drought, we need to restore the water and take it all, and after we do that we will have no extra
water.
Next, I would like to tell you about my trip to Africa. In Africa it is pretty bad because, they are in a
water crises. In Africa they have a scarce amount of water, and its not even safe to drink, that means
only one in six pepole get safe, fresh water to drink. Now for one of my fun facts, did you now what
water distribution is? Well, it means you consreve water, and thats really important. Thank you for

Examples Of Selfishness In The Veldt
Humanity has thought of many ways of besting one another. Whether it be for military weapons,
government, or how fertile the soil is, they always want to be better. First world countries seek to
digitize everything to live in a world of luxury while third world countries long for opportunities and
freedom. What they don't have is what they desire, and what they already obtain they improve
tenfold. Stronger, faster, bigger, better: this is the motto every other person subconsciously believes.
Given the choice of one homemade cookie, or a jar of store bought cookies, many would choose the
latter. That's because they're greedy. Although they may not always do it for selfish reasons, they
strive for the best. Why join a race if they don't believe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Where both The Veldt and A Sound of Thunder had shown remorse after going too far, this story
doesn't. The house kept going on it's programmed schedule, like nothing had ever happened. The
only sign of life in the story is the dog. However, the humans didn't program the house to feed the
dog, so it died staring at the human's breakfast no one would eat. "Two 'o'clock sang a voice.
Delicately sensing decay at last, the regiments of mice hummed out as softly as blown gray leaves in
an electrical wind. Two fifteen. The dog was gone. In the cellar, the incinerator glowed suddenly and
a whirl of sparks leaped up the chimney." The humans were caught up in providing themselves with
the privileges of the advanced house to make it more efficient. So much so they didn't bother to
program it to simply feed the dog. It was told to cook food three times a day, clean the house at
regular intervals, read someone a poem every night, and run the water among many other things. Yet
setting a task that would take less time and effort than all of the above was too trivial a task. Once
again, having innocent blood on one's hands because of their own greedy

Examples Of Monstrosity In Gojira

December 16, 2014 The movie "Gojira" in 1954 reflects monstrosity in the history of mid 20
century. The appearance of the dinosaur age animal in Japan bring different perspective view
through psychoanalysis to different groups of people. This film also read as a national allegory for
Japanese, war trauma and the revenge of nature. In the movie of Gojira, Japan was thrown into a
panic state after several cases of fishing and military boat reported missing mysteriously. Military
officials suspected the missing might due to sea mine or underwater volcanic activity. Somewhere
near the ships were sink, named Odo Island, villagers reported the appearance of a 164 foot tall

of mother nature as Gojira can easily clear off the city even defense by military forces. It also tell us
about the benefits and dangerous of using science, as it can produce a weapon that seek the revenge
of mother nature, in the other hand destroy harm bring to us. This movie cover everything from

Evolution Of Life On Earth Stephen Jay Gould Summary
Stephen Jay Gould in his paper The Evolution of Life on Earth wants to make it clear that the
creatures of this world have evolved to what they are today because of many different factors, not
just natural selection. Natural selection is where the organism that are best adapted to their
environments survive to pass on their DNA. What many don't realize is that natural selection is not
the only reason organisms evolved. Charles Darwin states even though it's incredibly important,
evolution does not strictly rely on natural selection. There are many other reasons that caused
species to evolve, let it be difficulties adapting, or reason that have nothing to do with the struggles
of reproducing, such as mass extinction. This article's main focus is that we as human have a need to
record and understand how life works. While ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first cells found were prokaryotic, after that life on earth evolved rapidly. The first organisms
may have come from the ocean. It started with eukaryotic cells, multicellular animals, marine
vertebrates, reptiles, mammals and then humans. Gould in his paper argues that while all of this is
true, we have put so much attention to the life that grew more complex that we ignored that some
species adapted to life on just as successfully by becoming simpler.
The first record of multicellular life was dated back 3.6 million years ago, that means there were
three billion years were unicellular. This gap tells us that progress is not the most important chapter
in life's history. It all started with unicellular life, three billion years' worth, then five million years'
worth of creating different organisms, and then five hundred million years of variation of anatomical
organisms. Most phylum of animal life made their star debut on fossils everywhere in what is
known as the Cambrian explosion. This explosion established anatomical design of animal life at a

Why Do Mammals Survive The Execution Of Dinosaurs?
Have you ever wondered how the mammals survived the massive execution of the dinosaurs? It is
strange since one of the most dominant species became extinct and one of the smaller species like
the mammals were able to survive this event. Some people said it was because they were fast
enough to get away or lucky enough to get away, but both of those are false. Since these were pre–
historic times we can't be hundred percent sure that these pieces of evidence are not fully true, but
aren't truly false to. Now let's go back into time and figure out this mystere.
A way that the early mammals could have survived the execution is by hiding in burrows and
aquatic environments. Now how this helped them is because the burrows and environments they
lived in was able to block them from the heat from the impact. On the Article "Why did the
mammals survived the 'K/T extinction' news.psu.edu it says "Underground burrows and aquatic
environments protected small mammals from the brief but drastic rise in temperature." This shows
us one of the few reasons why the mammals were able to survive that massive execution from 65
million years ago. The mammals most likely stayed in their for a few days untiled the heat died
down. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Causes Of Mass Extinction
Mass extinctions occur when an extremely large amount of species go extinct, meaning most life on
Earth dies out. However, there are always a handful of lucky species who make it through. Although
each mass extinction has a different cause, there are qualities in species that consistently allow them
to survive these events. What determines whether a species survives a mass extinction is its size,
population distribution, and diet.
A species's size is an important factor in its survival during a mass extinction. Smaller species tend
to have certain traits, such as shorter lifetimes, needing less food, and burrowing. The article "How
to Survive a Mass Extinction" on howstuffworks.com says that "They [small animals] tend to
reproduce more, which gives them a larger, more genetically varied population that can adapt more
quickly and effectively to change." This is because having a short lifetime means the species reaches
adulthood earlier, which in turn creates more generations of animals. Combined with having more
offspring per animal, the many generations of animals leads to a wide genetic diversity, increasing
the animal's chances of having a part of the species that was adapted well enough to the conditions
created by the extinction event. Many small animals (and a handful of medium–sized ones, such as
the Lystrosaurus) were burrowers, an important attribute that let them survive extinction events. "As
any survivalist worth his or her salt can tell you, underground is a

transform from a shark to a man at will. He lived in a deep, underwater cave near modern Pearl

spirit that was a shark. In honor of their 'Aumakua guardian spirit, the family built a shrine called a

Despite their belief that the each island had a shark god, the ancient Hawaiians still hunted sharks.
Shark teeth are exceptionally good for making arrows and weapons. The meat was eaten, and shark
skin was transformed into the top of drums. Today, shark hunting is still legal as long as it is done in
federal waters and according to the current regulations.

Do Aliens Look Anything Like Me Research Paper
What would an alien look like? Just like the films as a humanoid looking figure with large hands
and eyes? Or maybe they would look like monstrosities to us with different or extra appendages and
look nothing like us? The possibilities of organisms living on a completely different planet looking
something like us is impossible right? Well it depends how their species evolved, who knows they
may have took the exact evolutionary path as us and looking exactly like us. They may however
again look nothing like us, but think about it an unimaginable number of galaxies and planets,
anything is possible right? Many people have looked into this question and they have found some
rather interesting discoveries. Such as Richard Dawkins who believes that there is a large possibility
that if aliens do look anything like us we might have gotten a lucky catch on the yes side of the
question. However he does agree with others that he doesn't believe that if we come in contact with
aliens or them us that they would look anything like us infact most likely the complete opposite as
they would look nothing like us. He even goes on about dinosaurs as he says what if dinosaurs lived
longer than they had? Might they of evolved into a reptilian humanoid? The possibilities are nearly

the owner invited multiple guest to tour the park first. As they went through the park, they disliked it

when they are, the dinosaurs were free out of their cages. Afterwards, when they eventually fix the

Examples Of Simile In The Sound Of Thunder
"Sound of Thunder" Essay Have you ever thought about how your actions can have had a big effect
in life? Well, there are consequences as well as there may be significant results among your actions.
In the "Sound of Thunder", by Ray Bradbury, a mysterious horror author reveals to his reader that
one's action may cause a result that cannot be fixed. At the beginning of the story, Eckels was
walking by when he saw a sign about traveling into the past; which got him interested. Eckels
walked into the office ready to kill a dinosaur in the past with two safari leaders and two hunters. As
they arrived in the past through a time machine, Travis told him the rules; especially emphasizing
mostly about not to step off the path. Well, after a few days of searching, they found the T–Rex. At
the sight of the monster, Eckels became frightened and ran back to the time machine. Therefore, as
he was running back, he stepped off the path and crushed a butterfly beneath his boot. Nevertheless,
when they arrive back to present time, there were many disastrous changes around them that
couldn't be fixed. Although few people realized the consequences of their action, one mistake can
result in disastrous effects which were shown through literary devices such as simile,
foreshadowing, and imagery. In the story, Bradbury uses simile as a figure of speech that involves
the comparison of one thing to another thing of a different kind, to make a description more vivid or
emphatic. The narrator uses simile to compare how an object can make one understand what it
seems or feel like. In the story, the author had said, " He could feel them moving there, beyond the
walls, beyond the wall, almost, like so many chess pieces being blown away." The quote is telling
the readers that when they returned from the past, the place had changed entirely. Not only that, but
their outside surrounding was altered that it even made Eckels could feel time moving past him like
a chess piece was being won over by the opponent. One is able to understand how actions may
result as consequences for the future. However, the present is alternatively different from before.
Consequently, the reader's grasp that mistakes may happen, resulting in an after effects,

The United States Energy Information Administration
From the moment we wake up in the morning and turn our alarm clock off, to the moment we turn
the lights off and fall asleep, we are using energy. Throughout the day an average person will use a
cell phone, a computer, a television, an oven or microwave, and many will ride in a car or bus: all of
this takes energy. Energy is even being used while we sleep to power the same alarm clock that
wakes us up each morning. Individuals in first world countries are large consumers of energy, but
where does it all come from? What powers most of our modern day conveniences? The United
States Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that as much as eighty–two percent of the
United State's energy demand is met by using fossil fuels (Fossil Fuels), and in 2012, fossil fuels
made up eighty–seven percent of the energy consumed worldwide (Gonzalez & Lucky, 2013). What
are fossil fuels then?
There is a common misconception that fossil fuels come from dead dinosaurs, and while this is not
actually true, fossil fuels do come from dead plans and animals, however they were dead long before
the dinosaurs roamed the earth (U.S. Department of Energy). The type of animal and plant, as well
as the varied combinations these could create, determine the type of fossil fuel that was formed
(U.S. Department of Energy): oil, natural gas, or coal. The EIA defines fossil fuels as "concentrated
organic compounds found in the Earth's crust" (Fossil Fuels). This means that fossil fuels are formed

The Triassic-Jurassic Extinction
The Triassic–Jurassic extinction occurred about 210 million years ago, killing about 80 percent of
all living species ("End–Triassic Extinction"). Most species were hit hard, but there were no major
full–on extinctions. Still, cephalopods, sponges, corals, reptiles, and pollen and spore producing
plants were hit hard. The dinosaurs, however, were lucky and survived the extinction intact. This
allowed them to reign supreme for the next geological epoch ("End–Triassic Extinction"). During

The widely debated sixth extinction event, the Holocene extinction, is a man–made "weapon" of
mass destruction that has caused over 1000 extinct species in the past 500 years (Brannen). A
mixture of deforestation, climate change, and other human–impacted effects has made species die
off 10 to 100 times faster than the usual background species extinction (Brannen). Well known
creatures such as the Dodo Bird, Passenger Pidgeon, Tasmanian Wolf, and Golden Toad have all
died due to the lack of care humans have shown for the natural world. Smithsonian paleontologist
Doug Erwin, however, still maintains that the Holocene extinction is fake. Though humans have
accelerated the extinction of some species and negatively impacted the environment, the actual
amount of recent extinctions is almost insignificant. Compared to over half of all species dying off,
a few thousand lost animals make nearly no mark in the fossil record (Brannen). Most animals and
plants are not, or do not die in ways, suitable for fossilization. This makes the fossil record
extremely incomplete. Some scientists estimate that the fossil record shows less than one percent of
species that have actually lived. This means that only a truly massive extinction could cause a
noticeable change in the record, so the Holocene extinction is most likely not occurring. Still, Erwin
cautions us to watch our impact on the Earth and make sure

The Butterfly Effect In A Sound Of Thunder
Benjamin Franklin once said "For the want of a nail the shoe was lost, For the want of a shoe the
horse was lost, For the want of a horse the rider was lost, For the want of a rider the battle was lost,
For the want of a battle the kingdom was lost, And all for the want of a horseshoe–nail." This quotes
shows how even the minuscule actions in nature can have monumental consequences.
In the anecdote by Ray Bradbury "A Sound of Thunder" the author writes a story about the butterfly
effect. In which he shows a future generation in which time travel is possible. Hunting enthusiasts
can go to the past and hunt a T–Rex. Harrison writes how the trip goes wrong and the main
character Eckels ends up killing a butterfly which changes the face of Earth. The writer explains that
everything will have a consequence even if it is a million years later.
An important theme in "A Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury is minor decisions we make can
have lasting and unpredictable consequences. This theme is proven when Travis explains the
butterfly effect, Travis falls off the path and when the hunters come back to the the present time and
they realize that they have changed the world drastically.
When Travis explains the butterfly in much detail and explains to Eckels how he should not go off
the track or he may change the future of the universe.

Imagery In A Sound Of Thunder By Ray Bradbury
In the short story "A Sound of Thunder" Ray Bradbury tells the story about Eckles, a man wanting
to time travel back to the Mesozoic Era, the age of the dinosaurs. He wants to hunt the gigantic
Tyrannosaurus Rex. Throughout the story Ray Bradbury uses imagery to broaden the plot and
divulge the theme. The imagery helps set up all the intricate details our author deems important. The
author provides us with enough imagery to develop the characters and foreshadow the plot.
Throughout the story Ray Bradbury's imagery involves us in the plot. Our author provides us with
"The Machine howled. Time was a film run backward. Suns fled, and ten million moons fled around
them." (73) He makes it seem like we were actually traveling with Eckles to the Mesozoic era.
When Eckles encountered the Tyrannosaurus Rex he was astonished by the "...great oiled, resilient,
striding legs... [that] towered over thirty feet above half the trees..."(77) The author puts us in
Eckles' position making us see the monster right before our eyes. The major point in the plot was
when Eckles contravened the most important rule "Eckles, not looking back, walked blindly to the
edge of the path, his gun limp in his arms, stepped off the path, and walked, not knowing it, in the
jungle." (78) The imagery and the details the author contributes helps us perceive the crucial points
in plot. When reading the story we have pieces of major foreshadowing, they serve as subtle pushes
to notion the thrill of the plot. Eckles is

Time Travel In Ray Bradbury's 'A Sound Of Thunder'
What if the dream maybe wasn't a dream? A dream that when we make a mistake we can take it
back. A dream that science fiction uses over and over. A dream where man is his own ally and his
enemy to leading to destruction. Where boundless loops and figures eights could happen. How
should we prepare for it? What are the steps to prevent problems? If you hadnt figure it out it is time
travel. Google defines time travel as "the action of traveling through time into the past or the
future."Time travel is when you either go back or forward in quantum space, or in english in the

of conduct, a time traveler's law code. The code must be primarily designed to prevent logical

this dire problem can the code of ethics begin to worry about voyagers who stay within the system

What Are Fossil Fuels?
Starting small I wanted to explain what fossil fuels are exactly. Also how they are non– renewable,
meaning that they indeed will run out one day, and there is no way how to replenish the supply after
it is gone. Fossil fuels are natural fuels such as coal or gas, these fuels formed in the geological past
from the remains of microscopic plants and ancient animals like dinosaurs that lived and died
millions of years ago. The plants and animals or (diatoms) absorbed energy that came from the
biggest star in our universe, this star is the sun. Energy from the sun transferred over and was stored
into carbon molecules in the bodies of the plants and animals. As millions of years passed by, the
dead bodies of the plants and animals were covered by thick layers of bacteria. The bacterial layers
formed new plants from the remains of microscopic plants and animals to make organic materials.
The deeper they were inside the earth the more pressure and heat began to rise and depending on the
amount of pressure and heat formed these different fossil fuels. The fossil fuels that were formed
unfortunately were only a finite amount. Because there is only a finite amount there will not be any
more of these fuels after all are used. It is controversial to society because we run our everyday life
with a dependence on fossil fuels. Coal is one of the fossil fuels used by Americans every day. "Coal
is a combustible black or brownish– black sedimentary rock composed mostly of carbon and

A Short History of Nearly Everything
In A Short History of Nearly Everything Bill Bryson undertakes the task of explaining every
noteworthy event from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization or as he puts it "...how we went from
there being nothing at all to there being something, and then how a little of that something turned
into us, and also what happened in between and since." Bryson explains his reasoning for writing
the books was because he was discontented with the textbook version of science that failed to
explain how everything came to be and why it was that way. He then devoted three years to research
in order to write a book in which science can be described in a comprehensible way.
This is a vast amount of information and to better organize it Bryson has split the ... Show more

intriguing so I decided to give it a read and I am glad I did.
This book was well written and Bryson used layman's terms to describe some of sciences most
confusing topics in a way that I could understand. I think that the intended audience for the book is
normal people who would like to know the how's and why's behind science. Bryson relays factual
information with a witty and humorous air that makes you pause in your reading and smile. The
overall writing style is educational and professional without being vague or snooty. What I liked
best about the book was the way it conveyed information and the fact that the information itself was
very detailed without being boring. I also highly enjoyed the jokes that Bryson included for
example, "Tune your television to any channel it doesn't receive and about 1 percent of the dancing
static you see is accounted for by this ancient remnant of the Big Bang. The next time you complain
that there is nothing on, remember you can always watch the birth of the universe. (pg 12)" Or
maybe even, "By introducing extra dimensions, superstring theory enables physicists to pull
together quantum laws and gravitational ones into one comparatively tidy package, but it also means
that anything scientists say about the theory begins to sound worryingly like the sort of thoughts that

My Brother's Gameboy Essay
As a child the things that meant the most to me were shiny, colorful, and utterly unattainable. From
a young age I was taught that taking what was not yours without asking was unbelievably wrong
and would result in a never ending timeout. Fearing an eternity spent sat in a corner "thinking about
what I had just done" I made an early habit of asking for things I wanted and forgetting about the
things I could not have. Unfortunately this lifestyle could only last so long and so at only four years
old the temptation became too much and I had convinced myself that the only solution was to take
what was not given to me. The year was 2001 and my older brother had recently been given a brand
new GameBoy Advanced. This incredible technological ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

betrayal and disappointment washed over me. I had asked nicely and yet I was denied the chance to
play. Unsure of what to do with myself now that I was not allowed to have the one thing I desired I
found my way to my room. Needing a place to think I rolled under my bed and let the emotions
settle in. Disappointment won out as the more overwhelming emotion and I began to plot a way to
take what I felt was rightfully mine. I soon realized that I had no real idea of how to enact my plan
and became more frustrated. I knew I needed a second opinion and intended to speak to Lucky when
I realized that in my fit of despair I had left him behind. I decided that a rescue mission was in order
and climbed out from under my bed. Sneaking through the house I reached my brother's room and
was shocked to find only Lucky there. I raced over lifting him from the bed and hugging him close
knowing he was once again safe. I turned to leave but right before I could I noticed a faint noise
coming from within the blankets. Lifting them I found true temptation. There sat Joey's GameBoy
taunting me as I stared in wonderment. It dawned on me that I could just go back to my room and

Creationism versus Evolutionary Theories Essay
I have always been fascinated by the two major theories in the world used to explain how the human
race and other life forms came to be on planet Earth. These two theories are commonly known as the
Creationism theory and the Evolution theory. I want to have a look at: who came up with these
theories, why those theories exist, different beliefs on how old the earth is, basic timelines for each
theory, central reason as to how humans came to exist and where the evidence used by each side to
explain the existence of mankind is derived, existence of God questioned, dinosaurs fact or myth,
and the most supported theory currently in the world. This essay is not intended in any way to

However, Creationism does not exist because of a man's scientific research, but instead is based on
the book Genesis located in the Bible (Ruse). It exists on the basis of the teachings found in this
book, such as Genesis 1:1 that talks about how God in the beginning created the heavens and the
Earth (Ruse).
Victor Stenger, an emeritus professor of Physics and Astronomy, at the University of Hawaii, and
Visiting Fellow in Philosophy, at the University of Colorado in his article, "Darwinism and the Age
of Earth," says that evolutionists (those that support the Evolution theory) estimate the age of the
Earth at 4.54 billion years. Evolutionists have come to this conclusion about the Earth's age using a
scientific process known as Radiocarbon dating, a radiometric dating technique that uses the decay
of carbon–14 to estimate the age of organic materials (Stenger). Creationists (those that support the
Creationism) peg the age of the Earth at 6000 years old (Ruse). The Earth's age for the creationist is
calculated by taking the various time periods mentioned throughout the Bible and summing them up
(Ruse). I find it queer how these two theories estimates of the Earth's

A Short Story : The Story Of My Childhood
I remember coming home from my preschool as a little shy 3 year old. The day prior, I had painted
what I thought was a masterpiece which was a large green dinosaur. I was so eager, I couldn't wait to
show my mom what I had made. Right when I opened the front door, before I could run off to hug
my mom, I heard my sisters giggling. Completely ignoring my painting, I tossed it onto the ground
and ran up the stairs as fast as my little legs could carry me to where my sisters were. Out of breath,
I saw my sisters were crowding around a tiny, colorful box. Before I could even move, I started
screaming out of joy. My mom and my older sisters had gone into the pet store and had gotten a
plump, reddish–brown syrian hamster, which I had soon named Kelly. My sisters also picked out a
large enclosure with many tunnels for Kelly to explore in. My favorite accessory my sister got was a
large purple ball in which Kelly could run around and explored in. I thought that was the ultimate,
greatest thing ever made for hamsters, so while my dad was setting up the cage, fascinated I
watched Kelly run around in the ball. After a long, pain–filled 10 minutes of asking my dad "Is it
done yet?" the hamster's cage was finished. I was so exhilarated to put the hamster in I ran over to
the ball, that's when I noticed Kelly had opened the top of the plastic ball and was trying to escape! I
wasn't sure if I should tell my dad the incident, because I thought I just put the lid of the ball on
wrong, so I just ignored it. After scooping up Kelly, my dad put her in her new cage and she loved
it! She started borrowing in the bedding and was exploring all the tubes. My dad then suggested that
we should go eat dinner, so we closed her cage and went upstairs to eat dinner. After dinner, my
sisters and I went to go put Kelly in the ball to run around. "Kelly got out of the ball before dinner."
I said to my sisters. "It's fine. We'll watch her the whole time so we will see if she's trying to
escape." said my oldest sister, Molly. Convinced I agreed to let her run around in her plastic ball. We
were all mesmerized by watching Kelly run and explore our basement. She would run as fast as she

Major Themes In A Sound Of Thunder By Ray Bradbury
Hopefully, you've never been one point off an A because you forgot a homework assignment, like
me. It's one of the worst feelings ever, and what happened to me last year. This story takes it to an
extreme. Named "A Sound of thunder," by Ray Bradbury, this title embellishes the butterfly effect
by having five people go back in time on a dino–hunting safari. Everything is meticulously planned
so the future wouldn't change, but the main character steps on a butterfly and changes everything. A
major theme in "A sound of thunder" is to take great care in major decisions because you don't know
the long–term impacts of them. For one, the main character, Eckels, kicked up dirt with a butterfly,
then he comes back and everything changes, Also foreshadowing using the dinosaur.
Once Travis, the party leader, explains the butterfly effect, it foreshadows that something will set
this in motion: "'And that,' he said, 'is the Path, laid by Time Safari for your use. It floats six inches
above the earth. Doesn't touch so much as one grass blade, flower, or tree. It's an anti–gravity metal.
Its purpose is to keep you from touching this world of the Past in any way. Stay on the Path. Don't
go off it. I repeat. Don't go off. For any reason!'" (Bradbury. l 103–108) This explanation would not
have been included if it were not somehow significant to the theme. It foreshadows what will
happen by describing every aspect of the anti–gravity path, from its location to its purpose. While

Is There It Acceptable?
Is it Acceptable? Some people may go to the Zoo expecting a pleasant experience but leave
questioning whether or not the captivity of animals is morally acceptable in the first place. They
have not been the only ones. Many people take into consideration what happens to the animals while
in confinement. Placing and keeping animals in cages can deprive the animals of their most basic
needs. I disagree with the way animals can be treated in Zoos because it violates their freedom and it
fails to meet the requirements for a healthy life. Keeping an animal in an enclosure less than half the
size of their natural environment plays a tremendous part on the growth and well–being of the
creature. "In general, zoos and wildlife parks preclude or severely restrict natural behavior, such as
flying, swimming, running, hunting, climbing, scavenging, foraging, digging, exploring, and
selecting a partner. The physical and mental frustrations of captivity often lead to abnormal,
neurotic, and even self–destructive behavior, such as incessant pacing, swaying, head–bobbing, bar–
biting, and self–mutilation." ("Animal Rights Uncompromised: Zoos"). This quote from PETA
perfectly describes the effect and role that captivating an animal into a very confined space has on
its mental state. It is obvious that they have a heart, a brain, feelings and thoughts but not the ability
to speak up for themselves. Animals usually tend to lash out or shut down when they're not listened

Progeria: Adolescents Living in the Bodies of the Elderly...
One hundred and thirteen children have the mind of an adolescent, but the body of the elderly.
(Gordon) These children are dealing with the deadly disease known as Progeria. The main cause of
this is a minute genetic mutation, which leads to an abundant amount of symptoms. Progeria does
not affect a ubiquitous number of people; however, it still has an impact on the victim and their
families. In the beginning stages, the child grows slowly without any weight gain resulting in the
appearance of aging. The child's life is also affected due to the symptoms, tests, and treatments they
experience. Progeria is a rare ailment in adolescents that stems from a specific genetic abnormality
for which there is no current cure, and it dramatically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some ways to detect Progeria are genetic tests of the patient's blood and clinical exams.
Furthermore, the major signs begin developing when the child is around eighteen to twenty–four
months old and he will experience accelerated aging even though he was born looking normal. One
major symptom is hair loss. Patients are born with hair texture and color, but around six months to
two years, the hair begins to fall out. Then, from two to three years, they are usually bald, but might
have some thin, light hair. Loss of eyelashes and eyebrows are also experienced. Along with hair
loss, these children grow slowly resulting in a shrunken physique and minimal weight gain. For
males, their approximate height and weight are 40 inches and 25 pounds; but females are about 32
inches and 20 pounds. In When Good Things Happen to Bad People, doctors have stated these kids
will "grow to be very short," and "would never grow much beyond three feet."( Kusher 1–2)
Moreover, there are distinctive physical traits in the face and body. "By the second year of life, there
is also under development (hypoplasia) of the facial bones and the lower jaw." ("Hutchinson–
Gilford Progeria") Also, "the face appears disproportionately small in comparison to the head, and
bones of the front and the sides of the skull (cranium) are unusually prominent." ("Hutchinson–

Essay about Examining the Cretaceous: Paleogene Extinction...
Examining the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event Over 98% of all organisms that have lived on
Earth are now extinct. A mass extinction event occurs when a large number of species die out within
a small time frame (relative to the age of Earth). Mass extinctions are intensively studied for both
cause and effect, as there is usually room for debate regarding catalysts that precede the extinction
and the massive influx of new biological species that follows. There have been five major mass
extinctions, dubbed the "Big Five," that have wiped out at least 50% of the species living at those
times. The most well known mass extinction of the Big Five, with the decimation of every species
of non–avian dinosaur, is the Cretaceous–Paleogene ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This final blow would have sent earth into a nuclear winter. According to this theory, dust caused by
the asteroid collision disrupted plant growth by blocking out the sunlight needed for photosynthesis
for nearly a year. A chain reaction occurred as plants died off, so did the herbivores relying on the
plants, and then the carnivores that relied on the herbivores. Around 75% of species became extinct,
including dinosaurs, mammals, giant marine lizards, fish, birds, and insects. Meanwhile, seawater
flooded around 40% of the world's continents ("Mass Extinctions").
However, such mass extinction opens up speciation – when new species are developed. After the K–
Pg extinction, new groups of organisms were on the rise. Giant boid snakes (12 – 15 meters) began
appearing on land and the teleost fish (diverse class of ray–finned fish) filled marine niches left
vacant. Most significantly, "Paleocene mammals would spread and evolve into the many ecological
niches left open by the extinction of the dinosaurs," ("Cretaceous: Extinction of the Dinosaurs").
The entirety of Earth's ecosystem was affected by the K–Pg extinction, caused by volcanoes,
oceanic shifts, and ultimately, an asteroid. Lucky for humans, mammals capitalized on the

Change Over Time: Can Evolution Change Over Time?
Evolution, –"Change over time. Applied most frequently to the development of living organisms
according to the principles of natural selection, as identified by Charles Darwin in the nineteenth
century (Big History Project)." The idea of evolution is thought of to be going on for nearly 4 billion
years. Some people think that the competition between animals is the factor that drives evolution.
Evolution is a weird thing that leads to being a leader in the food chain but is caused in a
catastrophic way. Extinction drives evolution in many ways, some being the pure and lucky
survivalist. Extinction drives evolution because when a species goes extinct another rises, survival
of the fittest, and adapting to the environment faster than others.
Extinction drives evolution when a species goes extinct and another one rises. An example of a
species being wiped and another having the opportunity to rise for power is the Jurassic era. The
dinosaurs were wiped out by the impact of an asteroid that hit Mexico 66 million years ago; this was
called the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction (Eliasson). The dinosaurs were wiped out with 75% of
the earth's species. This extinction made some plants die and only left the small mammals to live.

extinction, and shortly after the impact, they underwent a new rapid increase in their diversity

we have now. Not all animal extinctions need to happen for evolution to happen, but as you have

Though the movie King Kong could not possibly cause anyone to lose sleep after seeing it today, it
was certainly classified as a horror movie when it firstly went public in 1933. On the one hand, the
director's intentional blurring between the boundary of a documentary and a fiction added to the
horror effect. On the other hand, besides the use of cutting–edge cinematic technology, the era of
Great Depression and thus the unusual psychology of people during the crisis also contributed
greatly to the huge success of King Kong. Just like Carl Denham expects towards the end of the

The chief of the native people proposes to exchange six women for Ann. Further, the fact that Kong
finds a white woman far more attractive than a native one is racist. In the movie, Kong fights as
many as three or four dinosaurs in order to protect his heroine. Every time he defeats a dinosaur, he
stereotypically pats his chest and roars to show his masculinity. Also every time he approaches to
her, despite her continuous screaming, he is gentle, careful and loving, which sharply contrasts to his
behavior of trampling native women at the end of the movie.
While the primitive (Kong) could not resist the attraction of a white woman, the civilized (Jack and
Carl) plays the role of saving the white woman. When they fight with Kong in the jungle, Kong fails
to kill them despite the fact that he succeeds in killing dinosaurs. After Kong was brought to the

who climbs up to the top of the Empire State and finally gets Ann. Ann, on the other hand, does

movie. As a woman, she is incapable of controlling her own

Juxtapositions In The Things They Carried By Tim O Brien
In The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien uses Juxtaposition, Symbolism, and Point of View to
show the burdens carried by the soldiers, and the effects war can have on individuals. He wrote the
vignette in order to bring a greater awareness to Americans who were unaware of the dark reality of
war.
Juxtapositions, such as Desire versus Shame, Morality versus Crime, and Talking versus Distraction,
are primary modes by which O'Brien shares the burdens of soldiers. Also, individual juxtapositions
such as "Gentle Killer (O'Brien 66)" are used along with dichotomies as a window into the heart of
the soldiers, and to show the ambivalence they held when making choices. "On the Rainy River"
describes the Desire versus Shame conflict within O'Brien immediately after he was drafted for the
Vietnam. "My conscience told me to run, but some irrational and powerful force was resisting, like a
weight pushing me towards war (49)." "I did not want people to think badly of me. Not my parents,

Distraction. After the war, one of the ways men stayed sane was by talking, or sharing their
experiences. O'Brien was able to escape his time at war by writing. Others were not as lucky. After
returning, Norman Bowker did not have another person to share his burden with. He considered
speaking with his father, but then realized it would be futile, as he could never fully understand him.
To attempt to find relief, Bowker conjures an imaginary conversation with his father, and is
awakened from his fantasy and realizes that he was alone. Later, Bowker committed suicide. The
difference between Bowker's and O'Brien's outcome ultimately was the ability to share, or not to
share their experiences. Dichotomies illustrate the extremities of war and how the soldiers are

A Short Story My Chickens By Steve Squack

  • 1. A Short Story My Chickens By Steve Squack Once upon a time, a chicken named Steve Shays and was enjoying life and earning a living wage when one day a muscular and big man grabbed him by his neck and threw him into a rickety old cage with rust and mesh and barely enough room to move his legs. There were chickens big and small, old and young stuck in other cages. Some of the chickens were not as lucky as he was. Some had broken wings or eyeballs that were poked out of their sockets. Then the cages started to move slowly, but the ground blurred and wind rushed down his feathers. He felt as if his wings and feathers are about to be ripped to shreds. Clouds of dust burned his eyes and lungs. After many days of dehydration and starvation the truck finally stopped at a looming wood building. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Steve squacks and the evil human punches him in the face knocking him out. When Steve woke up the first thing he saw was another cell full dirt and grime. There were also other chickens in the cage. Right then a human walks in takes two of my comrades and stoots the trough the head and laughs saying something about killing two birds with one stone. After the humans left Steve ordered a conference, and decides for war or at least kamikaze attacks. One of the chickens provided some sort of bright red stick and a match. Steve and the others stuffed the stick into one of the dead comrades. When another human comes in Steve lit the fuse and then they all ran out locking the human inside. They ran until they came back to the barn, bu5t they were too late. a jet loomed over the barn and dropped a bomb. The bomb sored down like an angel of death. The barn blew to smithereens. Dead bodies of so many friends and acquaintances flew out. Steve's' mom landed next to him. He did not know that his mom was in the coop. He just broke down and started to cry. Tears streaming down his cheeks dripping onto his mother;s managed body. Then she opened her eyes and said " I always loved you". Then she closed her eyes for the last time and smiled. The Myth Of The Giant Devils The Creation and Elimination Before man and woman were ever created, enormous monsters that stood over a few stories high with sharp teeth, enormous feet, and scaly skin roamed the Earth. There were also some who weren't monsters at all. These creatures tried to keep to themselves and stay away from the monsters that could attack them. The monsters were simply called the Giant Devils and the ones who weren't harmful were called the Peaceful Ones. No one knows how all of these creatures were put on the land. They were the first inhabitants of the earth. But only one group of them could stay. The Peaceful Ones varied in size, unlike the Giant Devils. Some of them were tiny, as small as a dandelion. Some were just as big as the Giant Devils, if not bigger. The Peaceful Ones only ate very small amounts of meat, herbs, grasses, fruits, leaves, and other plants. They did not believe in killing others for food. They tried their best to make friends with every peaceful dinosaur they came across. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All Giant Devils walked at towering heights with great, long legs and massive heads that are filled with anger and sharp teeth. Their favorite prey was the Peaceful Ones. • 5. Modern Humans And The Existence Of The Planet Modern humans have been on Earth for more than 200,000 years. Although many people feel that 200,000 years is a fairly long time for us to have existed as a species, it is quite the opposite. The earth is estimated to have been made 4.54 billion years ago. Life as we know it is estimated to have begun 4 billion years ago. When comparing the existence of the human race to the existence of the planet we live on or the existence of all forms of life, it becomes very apparent that the humans species time on this planet has been relatively miniscule. If you took the entire history of the 13.7 billion year old universe and compressed it into one year, the first humans would not even show up until 10:30 pm on December 31st. Without having a good understanding of how short our stay on this planet has been, it's very hard for people to imagine a future where humans are no longer an existing species. With how short of a time span we have existed here, and how many species have come and gone in the history of earth, it is not too irrational to fear the possibility of human extinction. Clearly this isn't a threat that is anywhere near imminent, but that is no reason to give it any less thought. A huge flaw of the human race is that we often tend to be short–sighted. We focus on problems that are affecting us now or will affect us in the near future, and this is the reason why getting people to do anything to prevent climate change or even just accept is so difficult. The possibility ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Negative Effects Of Godzilla Godzilla, Gojira in Japanese, is a monster we are all familiar with, but its context in Japan is frequently overlooked. Godzilla is thought of as a cheezy, poorly made dinosaur movie that ripped off King Kong. But in reality, Godzilla is a symbol of how Japan dealt with the aftermath of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, and the Castle Bravo bomb in 1954. Breathing nuclear radiation instead of fire, created by the radiation of nuclear bombing, Godzilla shows the world how monstrous the American bombs were through a lens that everyone can relate to: film. After the bombings in March of 1945, Japan was dealing with over 200,000 people suffering from nuclear bomb related issues.1 Surprisingly, rather than the nation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the placement of the explosion, some of the nuclear fallout settled on a Japanese fishing boat called Daigo Fukuryū Maru translating to "Fifth Lucky Dragon." The fishermen on the boat said they saw a large flash of light. The entire crew suffered radiation poisoning and barely made it back to shore. The fish on the Fifth Lucky Dragon made it to the fish markets, people became so cautious of eating radiation–affected fish that fishmonger's business suffered for weeks.4 The explosion subjected the adjacent atolls to the east to radiation contamination. Unsuspecting citizens were unaware it was radioactive fallout. Children even played in the fluffy white ashes like they would play in snow. The destruction cause concern across the world and "generated worldwide backlash against atmospheric nuclear testing." 4 By 1972, the effects of nuclear radiation on Bikini atoll were declared by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commision to be minimal enough for people to move back. More than 100 people returned to Bikini atoll that year. In 1978 the atoll was evacuated due to "unacceptably high levels of radiation."5 The United States occupied Japan until 1952 (the year Godzilla was released). In 1953, an American film called "The Beast of 20,000 Fathoms" was released. Similarly to Gojira, a nuclear explosion wakes up a prehistoric monster called "rhedosaurus" which destroys Manhattan. The test bombs that awaken rhedosaurus are detonated in the Arctic. This small piece of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are certainly those individuals that thrive because of these symptoms. Elite Daily wrote an article titled The 10 Most Successful People With ADHD these individual include but aren't limited to: Walt Disney; The Founder Of Disneyland, Jim Carrey; Actor/Comedian/Producer, Will Smith; Actor/Producer/Rapper, John F. I Believe this is a good point because all to often people try to conform others to one base line standard of behavior when in reality there are those who are more extrinsically motivated and those that are intrinsic motivated. What is normal in today's society, diversity should be welcomed because it insures the success of any given species. Those individuals who have the ability to recognize their passions and pursue them with such determination should be seen as a higher intellect than those that fall in line with everyone else. When applying for a job often times you hear employers specified that they're looking for out–of–the–box thinkers often times those thinkers are people that possess the symptoms of this alleged disorder. Consider if every individual pursued their passions and could learn through their passions. Take for example the child who hyper focuses on dinosaurs; this child doesn't show any interest in math or science–but loves to read and talk about dinosaurs. Two things can happen Child refuses to associate himself anything not having to do with dinosaurs, or an instructor/parent recognizes the opportunity to introduce dinosaurs into other aspects in a child's life such as math and science. If you have two tyrannosaurus and five Alamosaurus how many dinosaurs you have? An instructor could discuss the difference between a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All water has stayed the same since the beginning of time. Also I am lucky to be apart of the water cycle. The water cycle it is so fun! Well, as you would guess the water cycle could have happened over a million or more times because the water always stays the same. The three phases of the water cycle is evaporation,Condensation, and precipitation. If you ask me, precipitation is my favorite because you don't know when or where you are going to land. The beginning of the water cycle is evaporation. My experience with evaporation is really fun! You get to take a fun ride high up in the sky and suddenly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Precipitation is a pretty fun one too, you don't know when you land when you land. One time I fell in California, and another time I fell in Africa, those two places stood out to me. Precipitation is when it either rains, hails, or snows. When I fell in California they were in a drought and I thought you would like to know about it. As a water droplet, landing somewhere where there is a drought is important, because you make an impact in the drought. In California the drought has been around for six years, but recently there has been flooding and really heavy rain, but why are we still in a drought? Well, because since we were in the drought, we need to restore the water and take it all, and after we do that we will have no extra water. Next, I would like to tell you about my trip to Africa. In Africa it is pretty bad because, they are in a water crises. In Africa they have a scarce amount of water, and its not even safe to drink, that means only one in six pepole get safe, fresh water to drink. Now for one of my fun facts, did you now what water distribution is? Well, it means you consreve water, and thats really important. Thank you for joining my journey Ihoped you learned a ... Whether it be for military weapons, government, or how fertile the soil is, they always want to be better. First world countries seek to digitize everything to live in a world of luxury while third world countries long for opportunities and freedom. What they don't have is what they desire, and what they already obtain they improve tenfold. Stronger, faster, bigger, better: this is the motto every other person subconsciously believes. Given the choice of one homemade cookie, or a jar of store bought cookies, many would choose the latter. That's because they're greedy. The only sign of life in the story is the dog. However, the humans didn't program the house to feed the dog, so it died staring at the human's breakfast no one would eat. "Two 'o'clock sang a voice. Delicately sensing decay at last, the regiments of mice hummed out as softly as blown gray leaves in an electrical wind. Two fifteen. The dog was gone. In the cellar, the incinerator glowed suddenly and a whirl of sparks leaped up the chimney." The humans were caught up in providing themselves with the privileges of the advanced house to make it more efficient. So much so they didn't bother to program it to simply feed the dog. It was told to cook food three times a day, clean the house at regular intervals, read someone a poem every night, and run the water among many other things. Examples Of Monstrosity In Gojira Wilson Wei Sing Lau 5101454 Professor Meredith Gill CSCL 3461 December 16, 2014 The movie "Gojira" in 1954 reflects monstrosity in the history of mid 20 century. The appearance of the dinosaur age animal in Japan bring different perspective view through psychoanalysis to different groups of people. This film also read as a national allegory for Japanese, war trauma and the revenge of nature. In the movie of Gojira, Japan was thrown into a panic state after several cases of fishing and military boat reported missing mysteriously. Evolution Of Life On Earth Stephen Jay Gould Summary Stephen Jay Gould in his paper The Evolution of Life on Earth wants to make it clear that the creatures of this world have evolved to what they are today because of many different factors, not just natural selection. Natural selection is where the organism that are best adapted to their environments survive to pass on their DNA. What many don't realize is that natural selection is not the only reason organisms evolved. Charles Darwin states even though it's incredibly important, evolution does not strictly rely on natural selection. There are many other reasons that caused species to evolve, let it be difficulties adapting, or reason that have nothing to do with the struggles of reproducing, such as mass extinction. This article's main focus is that we as human have a need to record and understand how life works. While ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first cells found were prokaryotic, after that life on earth evolved rapidly. The first organisms may have come from the ocean. It started with eukaryotic cells, multicellular animals, marine vertebrates, reptiles, mammals and then humans. Gould in his paper argues that while all of this is true, we have put so much attention to the life that grew more complex that we ignored that some species adapted to life on just as successfully by becoming simpler. The first record of multicellular life was dated back 3.6 million years ago, that means there were three billion years were unicellular. This gap tells us that progress is not the most important chapter in life's history. It all started with unicellular life, three billion years' worth, then five million years' worth of creating different organisms, and then five hundred million years of variation of anatomical organisms. Most phylum of animal life made their star debut on fossils everywhere in what is known as the Cambrian explosion. This explosion established anatomical design of animal life at a rapid ... • 21. Why Do Mammals Survive The Execution Of Dinosaurs? Have you ever wondered how the mammals survived the massive execution of the dinosaurs? It is strange since one of the most dominant species became extinct and one of the smaller species like the mammals were able to survive this event. Some people said it was because they were fast enough to get away or lucky enough to get away, but both of those are false. Since these were pre– historic times we can't be hundred percent sure that these pieces of evidence are not fully true, but aren't truly false to. Now let's go back into time and figure out this mystere. A way that the early mammals could have survived the execution is by hiding in burrows and aquatic environments. Now how this helped them is because the burrows and environments they lived in was able to block them from the heat from the impact. On the Article "Why did the mammals survived the 'K/T extinction' news.psu.edu it says "Underground burrows and aquatic environments protected small mammals from the brief but drastic rise in temperature." This shows us one of the few reasons why the mammals were able to survive that massive execution from 65 million years ago. • 23. Causes Of Mass Extinction Mass extinctions occur when an extremely large amount of species go extinct, meaning most life on Earth dies out. However, there are always a handful of lucky species who make it through. Although each mass extinction has a different cause, there are qualities in species that consistently allow them to survive these events. What determines whether a species survives a mass extinction is its size, population distribution, and diet. A species's size is an important factor in its survival during a mass extinction. Smaller species tend to have certain traits, such as shorter lifetimes, needing less food, and burrowing. The article "How to Survive a Mass Extinction" on howstuffworks.com says that "They [small animals] tend to reproduce more, which gives them a larger, more genetically varied population that can adapt more quickly and effectively to change." This is because having a short lifetime means the species reaches adulthood earlier, which in turn creates more generations of animals. Combined with having more offspring per animal, the many generations of animals leads to a wide genetic diversity, increasing the animal's chances of having a part of the species that was adapted well enough to the conditions created by the extinction event. Many small animals (and a handful of medium–sized ones, such as the Lystrosaurus) were burrowers, an important attribute that let them survive extinction events. Or maybe they would look like monstrosities to us with different or extra appendages and look nothing like us? The possibilities of organisms living on a completely different planet looking something like us is impossible right? Well it depends how their species evolved, who knows they may have took the exact evolutionary path as us and looking exactly like us. They may however again look nothing like us, but think about it an unimaginable number of galaxies and planets, anything is possible right? Many people have looked into this question and they have found some rather interesting discoveries. Such as Richard Dawkins who believes that there is a large possibility that if aliens do look anything like us we might have gotten a lucky catch on the yes side of the question. However he does agree with others that he doesn't believe that if we come in contact with aliens or them us that they would look anything like us infact most likely the complete opposite as they would look nothing like us. • 35. Examples Of Simile In The Sound Of Thunder "Sound of Thunder" Essay Have you ever thought about how your actions can have had a big effect in life? Well, there are consequences as well as there may be significant results among your actions. In the "Sound of Thunder", by Ray Bradbury, a mysterious horror author reveals to his reader that one's action may cause a result that cannot be fixed. At the beginning of the story, Eckels was walking by when he saw a sign about traveling into the past; which got him interested. Eckels walked into the office ready to kill a dinosaur in the past with two safari leaders and two hunters. As they arrived in the past through a time machine, Travis told him the rules; especially emphasizing mostly about not to step off the path. Well, after a few days of searching, they found the T–Rex. At the sight of the monster, Eckels became frightened and ran back to the time machine. Therefore, as he was running back, he stepped off the path and crushed a butterfly beneath his boot. Nevertheless, when they arrive back to present time, there were many disastrous changes around them that couldn't be fixed. Although few people realized the consequences of their action, one mistake can result in disastrous effects which were shown through literary devices such as simile, foreshadowing, and imagery. In the story, Bradbury uses simile as a figure of speech that involves the comparison of one thing to another thing of a different kind, to make a description more vivid or emphatic. The narrator uses simile to compare how an object can make one understand what it seems or feel like. In the story, the author had said, " He could feel them moving there, beyond the walls, beyond the wall, almost, like so many chess pieces being blown away." The quote is telling the readers that when they returned from the past, the place had changed entirely. Not only that, but their outside surrounding was altered that it even made Eckels could feel time moving past him like a chess piece was being won over by the opponent. One is able to understand how actions may result as consequences for the future. However, the present is alternatively different from before. Consequently, the reader's grasp that mistakes may happen, resulting in an after effects, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The United States Energy Information Administration From the moment we wake up in the morning and turn our alarm clock off, to the moment we turn the lights off and fall asleep, we are using energy. Throughout the day an average person will use a cell phone, a computer, a television, an oven or microwave, and many will ride in a car or bus: all of this takes energy. Energy is even being used while we sleep to power the same alarm clock that wakes us up each morning. Individuals in first world countries are large consumers of energy, but where does it all come from? What powers most of our modern day conveniences? The United States Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that as much as eighty–two percent of the United State's energy demand is met by using fossil fuels (Fossil Fuels), and in 2012, fossil fuels made up eighty–seven percent of the energy consumed worldwide (Gonzalez & Lucky, 2013). What are fossil fuels then? There is a common misconception that fossil fuels come from dead dinosaurs, and while this is not actually true, fossil fuels do come from dead plans and animals, however they were dead long before the dinosaurs roamed the earth (U.S. Department of Energy). The type of animal and plant, as well as the varied combinations these could create, determine the type of fossil fuel that was formed (U.S. Department of Energy): oil, natural gas, or coal. Most species were hit hard, but there were no major full–on extinctions. Still, cephalopods, sponges, corals, reptiles, and pollen and spore producing plants were hit hard. The dinosaurs, however, were lucky and survived the extinction intact. This allowed them to reign supreme for the next geological epoch ("End–Triassic Extinction"). During the time of the Triassic–Jurassic extinction, Pangea was in the process of breaking apart. This caused major volcanic activity to occur, one of the prevailing theories as to what caused this extinction ("End–Triassic Extinction"). Like during the Permian–Triassic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The widely debated sixth extinction event, the Holocene extinction, is a man–made "weapon" of mass destruction that has caused over 1000 extinct species in the past 500 years (Brannen). A mixture of deforestation, climate change, and other human–impacted effects has made species die off 10 to 100 times faster than the usual background species extinction (Brannen). Well known creatures such as the Dodo Bird, Passenger Pidgeon, Tasmanian Wolf, and Golden Toad have all died due to the lack of care humans have shown for the natural world. Smithsonian paleontologist Doug Erwin, however, still maintains that the Holocene extinction is fake. Though humans have accelerated the extinction of some species and negatively impacted the environment, the actual amount of recent extinctions is almost insignificant. Compared to over half of all species dying off, a few thousand lost animals make nearly no mark in the fossil record (Brannen). Most animals and plants are not, or do not die in ways, suitable for fossilization. This makes the fossil record extremely incomplete. Some scientists estimate that the fossil record shows less than one percent of species that have actually lived. This means that only a truly massive extinction could cause a noticeable change in the record, so the Holocene extinction is most likely not occurring. The Butterfly Effect In A Sound Of Thunder Benjamin Franklin once said "For the want of a nail the shoe was lost, For the want of a shoe the horse was lost, For the want of a horse the rider was lost, For the want of a rider the battle was lost, For the want of a battle the kingdom was lost, And all for the want of a horseshoe–nail." This quotes shows how even the minuscule actions in nature can have monumental consequences. In the anecdote by Ray Bradbury "A Sound of Thunder" the author writes a story about the butterfly effect. In which he shows a future generation in which time travel is possible. Hunting enthusiasts can go to the past and hunt a T–Rex. Harrison writes how the trip goes wrong and the main character Eckels ends up killing a butterfly which changes the face of Earth. The writer explains that everything will have a consequence even if it is a million years later. An important theme in "A Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury is minor decisions we make can have lasting and unpredictable consequences. This theme is proven when Travis explains the butterfly effect, Travis falls off the path and when the hunters come back to the the present time and they realize that they have changed the world drastically. When Travis explains the butterfly in much detail and explains to Eckels how he should not go off the track or he may change the future of the universe. He wants to hunt the gigantic Tyrannosaurus Rex. Throughout the story Ray Bradbury uses imagery to broaden the plot and divulge the theme. The imagery helps set up all the intricate details our author deems important. The author provides us with enough imagery to develop the characters and foreshadow the plot. Throughout the story Ray Bradbury's imagery involves us in the plot. Our author provides us with "The Machine howled. Time was a film run backward. Suns fled, and ten million moons fled around them." When Eckles encountered the Tyrannosaurus Rex he was astonished by the "...great oiled, resilient, striding legs... • 47. What Are Fossil Fuels? Starting small I wanted to explain what fossil fuels are exactly. Also how they are non– renewable, meaning that they indeed will run out one day, and there is no way how to replenish the supply after it is gone. Fossil fuels are natural fuels such as coal or gas, these fuels formed in the geological past from the remains of microscopic plants and ancient animals like dinosaurs that lived and died millions of years ago. The plants and animals or (diatoms) absorbed energy that came from the biggest star in our universe, this star is the sun. Energy from the sun transferred over and was stored into carbon molecules in the bodies of the plants and animals. As millions of years passed by, the dead bodies of the plants and animals were covered by thick layers of bacteria. The bacterial layers formed new plants from the remains of microscopic plants and animals to make organic materials. The deeper they were inside the earth the more pressure and heat began to rise and depending on the amount of pressure and heat formed these different fossil fuels. The fossil fuels that were formed unfortunately were only a finite amount. Because there is only a finite amount there will not be any more of these fuels after all are used. It is controversial to society because we run our everyday life with a dependence on fossil fuels. Coal is one of the fossil fuels used by Americans every day. • 57. A Short Story : The Story Of My Childhood I remember coming home from my preschool as a little shy 3 year old. The day prior, I had painted what I thought was a masterpiece which was a large green dinosaur. I was so eager, I couldn't wait to show my mom what I had made. Right when I opened the front door, before I could run off to hug my mom, I heard my sisters giggling. Completely ignoring my painting, I tossed it onto the ground and ran up the stairs as fast as my little legs could carry me to where my sisters were. Out of breath, I saw my sisters were crowding around a tiny, colorful box. Before I could even move, I started screaming out of joy. My mom and my older sisters had gone into the pet store and had gotten a plump, reddish–brown syrian hamster, which I had soon named Kelly. My sisters also picked out a large enclosure with many tunnels for Kelly to explore in. My favorite accessory my sister got was a large purple ball in which Kelly could run around and explored in. I thought that was the ultimate, greatest thing ever made for hamsters, so while my dad was setting up the cage, fascinated I watched Kelly run around in the ball. After a long, pain–filled 10 minutes of asking my dad "Is it done yet?" the hamster's cage was finished. I was so exhilarated to put the hamster in I ran over to the ball, that's when I noticed Kelly had opened the top of the plastic ball and was trying to escape! I wasn't sure if I should tell my dad the incident, because I thought I just put the lid of the ball on wrong, so I just ignored it. After scooping up Kelly, my dad put her in her new cage and she loved it! She started borrowing in the bedding and was exploring all the tubes. My dad then suggested that we should go eat dinner, so we closed her cage and went upstairs to eat dinner. After dinner, my sisters and I went to go put Kelly in the ball to run around. "Kelly got out of the ball before dinner." I said to my sisters. "It's fine. We'll watch her the whole time so we will see if she's trying to escape." said my oldest sister, Molly. Convinced I agreed to let her run around in her plastic ball. We were all mesmerized by watching Kelly run and explore our basement. She would run as fast as she could and then stop and turn in a different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Major Themes In A Sound Of Thunder By Ray Bradbury Hopefully, you've never been one point off an A because you forgot a homework assignment, like me. It's one of the worst feelings ever, and what happened to me last year. This story takes it to an extreme. Named "A Sound of thunder," by Ray Bradbury, this title embellishes the butterfly effect by having five people go back in time on a dino–hunting safari. Everything is meticulously planned so the future wouldn't change, but the main character steps on a butterfly and changes everything. A major theme in "A sound of thunder" is to take great care in major decisions because you don't know the long–term impacts of them. For one, the main character, Eckels, kicked up dirt with a butterfly, then he comes back and everything changes, Also foreshadowing using the dinosaur. Once Travis, the party leader, explains the butterfly effect, it foreshadows that something will set this in motion: "'And that,' he said, 'is the Path, laid by Time Safari for your use. It floats six inches above the earth. Doesn't touch so much as one grass blade, flower, or tree. It's an anti–gravity metal. Its purpose is to keep you from touching this world of the Past in any way. Stay on the Path. Don't go off it. I repeat. Don't go off. For any reason!'" (Bradbury. l 103–108) This explanation would not have been included if it were not somehow significant to the theme. It foreshadows what will happen by describing every aspect of the anti–gravity path, from its location to its purpose. While some might ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Is There It Acceptable? Is it Acceptable? Some people may go to the Zoo expecting a pleasant experience but leave questioning whether or not the captivity of animals is morally acceptable in the first place. They have not been the only ones. Many people take into consideration what happens to the animals while in confinement. Placing and keeping animals in cages can deprive the animals of their most basic needs. I disagree with the way animals can be treated in Zoos because it violates their freedom and it fails to meet the requirements for a healthy life. Keeping an animal in an enclosure less than half the size of their natural environment plays a tremendous part on the growth and well–being of the creature. "In general, zoos and wildlife parks preclude or severely restrict natural behavior, such as flying, swimming, running, hunting, climbing, scavenging, foraging, digging, exploring, and selecting a partner. The physical and mental frustrations of captivity often lead to abnormal, neurotic, and even self–destructive behavior, such as incessant pacing, swaying, head–bobbing, bar– biting, and self–mutilation." ("Animal Rights Uncompromised: Zoos"). This quote from PETA perfectly describes the effect and role that captivating an animal into a very confined space has on its mental state. It is obvious that they have a heart, a brain, feelings and thoughts but not the ability to speak up for themselves. Animals usually tend to lash out or shut down when they're not listened to or properly tended ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Progeria: Adolescents Living in the Bodies of the Elderly... One hundred and thirteen children have the mind of an adolescent, but the body of the elderly. (Gordon) These children are dealing with the deadly disease known as Progeria. The main cause of this is a minute genetic mutation, which leads to an abundant amount of symptoms. Progeria does not affect a ubiquitous number of people; however, it still has an impact on the victim and their families. In the beginning stages, the child grows slowly without any weight gain resulting in the appearance of aging. The child's life is also affected due to the symptoms, tests, and treatments they experience. Progeria is a rare ailment in adolescents that stems from a specific genetic abnormality for which there is no current cure, and it dramatically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some ways to detect Progeria are genetic tests of the patient's blood and clinical exams. Furthermore, the major signs begin developing when the child is around eighteen to twenty–four months old and he will experience accelerated aging even though he was born looking normal. One major symptom is hair loss. Patients are born with hair texture and color, but around six months to two years, the hair begins to fall out. Then, from two to three years, they are usually bald, but might have some thin, light hair. Loss of eyelashes and eyebrows are also experienced. Along with hair loss, these children grow slowly resulting in a shrunken physique and minimal weight gain. For males, their approximate height and weight are 40 inches and 25 pounds; but females are about 32 inches and 20 pounds. In When Good Things Happen to Bad People, doctors have stated these kids will "grow to be very short," and "would never grow much beyond three feet."( Kusher 1–2) Moreover, there are distinctive physical traits in the face and body. "By the second year of life, there is also under development (hypoplasia) of the facial bones and the lower jaw." ("Hutchinson– Gilford Progeria") Also, "the face appears disproportionately small in comparison to the head, and bones of the front and the sides of the skull (cranium) are unusually prominent." • 69. Essay about Examining the Cretaceous: Paleogene Extinction... Examining the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event Over 98% of all organisms that have lived on Earth are now extinct. A mass extinction event occurs when a large number of species die out within a small time frame (relative to the age of Earth). Mass extinctions are intensively studied for both cause and effect, as there is usually room for debate regarding catalysts that precede the extinction and the massive influx of new biological species that follows. There have been five major mass extinctions, dubbed the "Big Five," that have wiped out at least 50% of the species living at those times. The most well known mass extinction of the Big Five, with the decimation of every species of non–avian dinosaur, is the Cretaceous–Paleogene ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This final blow would have sent earth into a nuclear winter. According to this theory, dust caused by the asteroid collision disrupted plant growth by blocking out the sunlight needed for photosynthesis for nearly a year. A chain reaction occurred as plants died off, so did the herbivores relying on the plants, and then the carnivores that relied on the herbivores. Around 75% of species became extinct, including dinosaurs, mammals, giant marine lizards, fish, birds, and insects. Meanwhile, seawater flooded around 40% of the world's continents ("Mass Extinctions"). However, such mass extinction opens up speciation – when new species are developed. After the K– Pg extinction, new groups of organisms were on the rise. Giant boid snakes (12 – 15 meters) began appearing on land and the teleost fish (diverse class of ray–finned fish) filled marine niches left vacant. Most significantly, "Paleocene mammals would spread and evolve into the many ecological niches left open by the extinction of the dinosaurs," ("Cretaceous: Extinction of the Dinosaurs"). The entirety of Earth's ecosystem was affected by the K–Pg extinction, caused by volcanoes, oceanic shifts, and ultimately, an asteroid. Lucky for humans, mammals capitalized on the opportunity ... • 71. Change Over Time: Can Evolution Change Over Time? Evolution, –"Change over time. Applied most frequently to the development of living organisms according to the principles of natural selection, as identified by Charles Darwin in the nineteenth century (Big History Project)." The idea of evolution is thought of to be going on for nearly 4 billion years. Some people think that the competition between animals is the factor that drives evolution. Evolution is a weird thing that leads to being a leader in the food chain but is caused in a catastrophic way. Extinction drives evolution in many ways, some being the pure and lucky survivalist. Extinction drives evolution because when a species goes extinct another rises, survival of the fittest, and adapting to the environment faster than others. Extinction drives evolution when a species goes extinct and another one rises. An example of a species being wiped and another having the opportunity to rise for power is the Jurassic era. The dinosaurs were wiped out by the impact of an asteroid that hit Mexico 66 million years ago; this was called the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction (Eliasson). The dinosaurs were wiped out with 75% of the earth's species. This extinction made some plants die and only left the small mammals to live. Since they were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Plants have been a great part of evolution in total, "Some important plant groups, such as the gymnosperms (including pines, spruce and firs) lost a great deal of their diversity through extinction. On the other hand, flowering plants (angiosperms) did not suffer from increased extinction, and shortly after the impact, they underwent a new rapid increase in their diversity (Eliasson)." This is how plants have been evolving throughout many eras and make up most of what we have now. Not all animal extinctions need to happen for evolution to happen, but as you have seen here we see that any type of living thing can go extinct and another can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Film Review: King Kong(1933) Essay Qing Min Apr 21, 2013 AHI 356 Imaging Otherness in Visual Culture Film Review 8 King Kong Though the movie King Kong could not possibly cause anyone to lose sleep after seeing it today, it was certainly classified as a horror movie when it firstly went public in 1933. On the one hand, the director's intentional blurring between the boundary of a documentary and a fiction added to the horror effect. On the other hand, besides the use of cutting–edge cinematic technology, the era of Great Depression and thus the unusual psychology of people during the crisis also contributed greatly to the huge success of King Kong. Just like Carl Denham expects towards the end of the film: "The whole world will pay to see this! The eighth wonder of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The chief of the native people proposes to exchange six women for Ann. Further, the fact that Kong finds a white woman far more attractive than a native one is racist. In the movie, Kong fights as many as three or four dinosaurs in order to protect his heroine. Every time he defeats a dinosaur, he stereotypically pats his chest and roars to show his masculinity. Also every time he approaches to her, despite her continuous screaming, he is gentle, careful and loving, which sharply contrasts to his behavior of trampling native women at the end of the movie. While the primitive (Kong) could not resist the attraction of a white woman, the civilized (Jack and Carl) plays the role of saving the white woman. When they fight with Kong in the jungle, Kong fails to kill them despite the fact that he succeeds in killing dinosaurs. After Kong was brought to the civilized world, he completely loses his position as the king of the nature and has to die in the face of civilization and technology. Unsurprisingly, it is Carl who proposes to use airplanes and it is Jack who climbs up to the top of the Empire State and finally gets Ann. Ann, on the other hand, does nothing but screaming, screaming, and screaming since Kong makes his first appearance in the movie. As a woman, she is incapable of controlling her own ... • 75. Juxtapositions In The Things They Carried By Tim O Brien In The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien uses Juxtaposition, Symbolism, and Point of View to show the burdens carried by the soldiers, and the effects war can have on individuals. He wrote the vignette in order to bring a greater awareness to Americans who were unaware of the dark reality of war. Juxtapositions, such as Desire versus Shame, Morality versus Crime, and Talking versus Distraction, are primary modes by which O'Brien shares the burdens of soldiers. Also, individual juxtapositions such as "Gentle Killer (O'Brien 66)" are used along with dichotomies as a window into the heart of the soldiers, and to show the ambivalence they held when making choices. "On the Rainy River" describes the Desire versus Shame conflict within O'Brien immediately after he was drafted for the Vietnam. "My conscience told me to run, but some irrational and powerful force was resisting, like a weight pushing me towards war (49)." "I did not want people to think badly of me. He considered speaking with his father, but then realized it would be futile, as he could never fully understand him. To attempt to find relief, Bowker conjures an imaginary conversation with his father, and is awakened from his fantasy and realizes that he was alone. Later, Bowker committed suicide. The difference between Bowker's and O'Brien's outcome ultimately was the ability to share, or not to share their experiences.
