Are drugs really the answer to anyone's problems? "Comfortably Numb," a song, written by Roger
Waters of the band Pink Floyd is about depression, mental health and drug use in the music culture.
They write about a person who focuses on escaping his own mind because he can't bear what is
going on in the outside world. The band mate retreats to his inner self and is having conflict with the
physical world. "Comfortably Numb" is a song (in it's generation) that most people, who were
having problems, could relate to by taking drugs to dull the pain. In the opening of the song the
writer's band mate is conclusively depressed. He has lost touch with reality and is trying to be
awoken by the doctor. The doctor says, " Hello, hello, hello/ Is there anybody in there?/ Just nod if
you can hear me./ Is there anybody home?" Using words like "nod" and asking the question
"anybody in there," the doctor is obviously trying to arouse him and looking for a response but their
friend is mentally closed off from the physical world. The doctor speaks to him again, "Come on
now, I hear you're feelin' down/ Well, I can ease your pain and get you on your feet again." The
words "feelin' down" references the depression and/or pain he is feeling. The doctor "can ease" his
"pain" and "get" him on his "feet again" leaves the person to believe that the doctor can fix any of

Pink Floyd, an English psychedelic–rock band founded in 1965, was originally made up of
construction students Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright. They originally
started performing in London's underground scene in the late 60s, and under Syd Barrett's creative
leadership they released two charting singles and a successful debut album.
In December 1967, the group added David Gilmour as the band's fifth member following the mental
breakdown of Syd Barrett during their support of Jimi Hendrix during a tour of England. Eventually,
Syd Barrett was moved to a nonperforming role, only writing songs and nothing else. This stopped
when a mixture of Syd's unpredictable behavior at the time and idiosyncratic sense of humor
occurred and created a song that, initially, seeming like an ordinary Barrett tune. However, as the
others attempted to join in and learn the song, Barrett changed the melodies and structure, making it

Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album has entered the cultural norm as a contemporary masterpiece of art,

I. The poem that I chose to write about for my assignment is "Lisa's Ritual, Age 10"
by Grace Carolyn Bridges. The reason I chose this poem is because as soon as I read it, I
immediately felt drawn to this poem, something that seems important when connecting
with a piece of work. The poem appears to focus on a young girl named Lisa, and her
experience with incest between herself & her father. It touches not only on that
experience, but how it makes this little girl feel, and what she does after each time this

Sweaty, hairy, sticking to
skin–these are all things that are very much unpleasant, and only further helps the speaker
convey how awful her experience has been. She is simply a child, and these traits are very
unappealing to a 10 year old. And the wall is just the opposite of that (or him, rather).
Strong, smells fresh, familiar, clean. While leaning against the wall, the little girl finds
herself drifting away from the experience, probably because she is so worn from going
through it. The wall offers her temporary protection, and for that, she seems grateful.

ever happened." ( 31–33) lets the reader know that she wishes to be somewhere that this
never could have happened. This is a safe place that the little girl takes herself to, because

different from our own. Author, Aldous Huxley, describes a world of Utopia where people are better
off being immediately happy then with understanding the truth. This way of living is not typical and

In John Hope Franklin 's "The Train From Hate," Franklin claims that no matter what an oppressor
inflicts upon the oppressed, the oppressed 's worth is in no way diminished, and indeed the abuse is

provided a sound basis for my attitudes and conduct from that day to this. At that early age, I had

"Interlopers", Saki uses conflict, and in the poem "Mending Wall", Frost uses character to show that
there is always a chance to resolve problems with unity, but that is simply a rare conclusion for
almost everyone. In "Interlopers", Saki's use of conflict shows division and war. First, while Ulrich
and Georg are hunting each other in the woods, their hate for each other is stressed; "If there was a
man in the world whom [Ulrich] detested and wished ill to, it was Georg Znaeym, the inheritor of
the quarrel..." Ulrich and Georg's hatred is sparked by this plot of land that has been passed down
for generations, that both families want to own for themselves; "The forest lands of Gradwitz were

Roger waters, band member of Pink Floyd, wrote almost the entire album of "The
wall", one of Pink Floyd's most popular albums, a top three sellers, with over 23 million
records sold. He was the singer, songwriter and bassist for Pink Floyd. David Gilmour
wrote the music while he was working on a solo album in 1978. He brought it to "The
Wall" album sessions and Waters wrote lyrics for it. Gilmour believed that the song, "
comfortably numb" could be divided into 2 sections: Dark and light. The light parts that
begin " When I was a child, " which Gilmour sings, the dark parts are, "hello is there
anybody in there?" parts, which are sung by Roger Waters.
The movie, "The wall," was released in 1982. It's shown as one huge music
video, for each song. One of the movie's scenes depicts the song, "comfortably numb",
and is known to be one of the most important songs to the album "The Wall." The song
signifies a huge part in Pink's life, showing how the events that happened to the band
member's impacted their lives, including many of Roger Water's real life struggles.
Pink is the character of the band members and Roger Waters himself. The song starts
out with, a voice saying, "Hello is there anybody out there?" Just nod if you can hear

In one of the most well–known masterpieces by Pink Floyd, "Hey You", focused on one of the most
important aspects of human life – the sense of belonging through human interaction. The lyric
highlights Roger Waters' skill as a brilliant lyricist and composer, who reaches out to his audience
with the haunting melody and emotionally–charged lyric. Waters has touched many lives with this
piece by explicitly emphasizing on the pain of desolation and disassociation. He constructs his
dialogue based on a life of his former bandmate Syd Barrett, whose life was severely affected by
heavy drugs use, social desolation, and ultimately developed into mental illness.
Waters introduces the audience to the song with the sound of an acoustic guitar in a low lying,
gloomy, yet captivating tone – painting a picture of an eerie state of mind. He then grabs their
attention by using a bold holler and plea, Waters writes:
Hey you out there in the cold,
Getting lonely getting old,
Can you feel me?"
The verse renders an image of isolation and desperation for human interaction and recognition.

A holiday, or tradition is usually looked upon as times of happiness and a way to gather with loved
ones, but it isn't always that way. Traditions are a part of most people's lives, and is really never seen
as a negative connotation. Yet, there is always another side to the story. In the two pieces, The
Interlopers and Mending Wall, tradition can be seen embedded in between the lines. The Interlopers
features two men whose families have hated one another for generations, all over a piece of land that
really has no value. The men find themselves bleeding out pinned under a large tree branch, where

This tradition was all they knew, and kept the two men apart for their whole lives. Before the wolves
come, Ulrich(one of the men), asks Georg if he wants to finally be friends, and Georg replies
"Ulrich von Gradwitz, I will be your friend." This acquaintanceship had begun all in the hour or two
they were together out of their many years. In the short amount of time where the weight of tradition
wasn't on their shoulders, and no family was pressuring them, they were able to resolve their
conflicts. Another point is the conflict that had started their tradition over a plot of forest that "was
not remarkable for the game it harbored or the shooting it afforded."
The author of the poem Mending Wall, Robert Frost, uses an extended metaphor to reveal the idea
that tradition can cause social division. Mending Wall is a poem about two men who rebuild the
stone wall that marks their property line, which is done once every year after winter has died down.
The narrator has seen the wall as useless and there is truly no use for it, as his "apple trees will never
get across / and eat the cones under his pines." It is like the narrator has a pack of wolves and the
other man sheep. Yet, the neighbor feels quite the opposite, he feels the wall is necessary. He says
not once, but twice "Good fences make good neighbors."
