An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge and The Necklace
People always like to impute all the misfortunes they have been through to their unfair destinies.
However, most of the occurrences happen in the human society is not random, and every
consequence must have a corresponding reason. Sometimes, the motive of one's action is hard to
find because it may be psychogenic reasons that hide deep in one's mind. Sigmund Freud comes up
the idea that "human beings are motivated, even driven, by desires, fears, needs, and conflicts of
which they are unaware" (Tyson 14–15). In most of the literature works, narrators' unconscious egos
like desires and believes are often the most important factors to affect their behaviors and cause the
consequential narrative events happen. Both of protagonists in the articles, Peyton Farquhar in
Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and Madame Loisel in Guy de
Maupassant's "The Necklace," are struggled with their identities, and suffered from the delusions
caused by their egos, which lead themselves to make the irretrievable mistakes, and finally, they fall
to the fantasies again to defend the consequences caused by their mistakes.
Both of the protagonists are not satisfied with their current identities, their desires blind their minds,
and make them easily fall into unrealistic delusions. In the "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," in
order to create suspense, Bierce does not mention the narrator's identity until Part II. He describes
Peyton Farquhar as a "well–to–do planter;" Farquhar's

Owl Creek Bridge Symbolism
The use of expertise literary technique is what authors use in order to immediately catch the
attention of the readers. This is exactly what Ambrose Bierce has done in her book titled An
Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. This book takes place during the Civil War. By reading this book,
the reader will further understand the much deeper meanings that can be understood using simple
items. Ambrose Bierce uses literary techniques such as symbolism, imagery, and irony in order to
create a foreshadowing or shock effect to catch the reader's attention. Symbolism is the use of
symbols to represent ideas or qualities. Bierce uses many examples of this throughout the story. The
soldier's guns that they hold during the hanging foreshadow a shock effect, which shows that
something wrong is going to happen. The details that the main character expresses are too vivid such
as the watch that he gives the soldier which shows that he is giving his time away to this man who
ends up killing him. Another symbol is that the color of the main character's eyes is grey, as well as
the soldier who hangs him. This entitles that there is a fading line between reality and fantasy. The
main character's neck and wrists appear to be in pain while he is in his fantasy. This indicates the
pain that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bierce uses multiple examples of imagery throughout his text. As he is about to be hanged, he
vividly glances at driftwood slowly dancing as it floated down the river. The main character also
noticed how the sun touches the water to really show the vividness of his mind. Another example is
when the main character supposedly escapes and falls into the river. As he crashes into the water he
says that the water rose around him trapping him. This also triggered his neck pain which relates
back to him being hanged. By using imagery in the text, the reader understands how the author
juxtaposes life and the

Petrified Forest Research Paper
In terms of National Parks, one often thinks of the greats such as Yosemite, Yellowstone, or the
sheer vast area of Alaskan parks such as Denali. There are many other National Parks with unique
beauty, striking features, intricate geology, and historical significance that many forget about or
brush aside. One of which is Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. Petrified Forest is arguably
the most well known of all areas that contain these fossilized woods and boasts a rare Arizona
grassland environment, an abundance of prehistoric cultural artifacts, and around 290 plant and
animal species. Geologically, Petrified Forest National Park stands out with stunning colors,

Many petroglyphs, animal fossils, and artifcats are visible throughout this formation in addition to
the exposed, petrified logs. Chinle is broken up into smaller members and from oldest to youngest
they are– Mesa Redondo Member, Blue Mesa Member, Sonsela Member, Petrified Forest Member,
and Owl Rock Member. Each member is made up of unique materials that are responsible for their
remarkable color. The Paleozoic sandy conglomerate and siltstone of Mesa Redondo Member is red,
yellow and purple and was once part of the river's floodplain before its deposition between 225–227
million years ago. The Blue Mesa Member consists of multicolored mudstone cobbles in blue,
green, grey, and purple colors and dates to 220–225 million years ago. These older members make
up the badlands of Petrified Forest and display their colorful banding. The 216 million year old
Sonsela member includes a few smaller bedded areas with brown cross–bedded sandstones, more
multicolored mudstones in blue, grey, and purple, white and grey sandstone beds, and white cross–
bedded sandstone conglomerates with an assortment of sizes for cobbles. The Petrified Forest
member, an area within the Painted Desert feature, is approximately 213 million years old with thick
red and brown mud and sandstone layers. As one would guess, this member contains a good
majority of the fossilized wood segments and uranium–bearing minerals that are often present with
such organic matter as trees and logs. At 205 million years old, the youngest Owl Rock Member
represents an area where there had once been a dry inland lakebed, leaving observable trace
minerals from the evaporation process. The colors found here are typically light to dark red with
orange and white, resulting from the mudstone littered with thin layers of limestone throughout. The

An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge Analysis
Time can be good or bad depending on how it is perceived. When in moments of distress, time can
go extremely slow or when having fun, time can go fast. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
written by Ambrose Bierce starts by Peyton Farquhar being prepared to be hanged for interfering
with the railroad. He then goes into a dream state where he is free and has escaped to his wife and
kid. Farquhar is harshly taken away from this dream with the snap of the rope and him proceeding to
be hanged. Bierce Uses many literary techniques in the story to support his motif of time such as
imagery, symbolism and characterization.
Bierce uses imagery by describing objects in nature in great detail. "Saw the individual tree, the

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
There are moments in life that the world seems to be turned upside down and inside out; As if the
greatest moments come to the least deserving person, and the passionate and the diligent only get a
drop of achievement. These moments can come in waves of frustration, anger, envy – for the
struggling – tearing the hard workers to pieces when they see the undeserving take in praise and
achievements, but still pushing on towards their dream, these workers don't bend to the challenges
that are thrown in the way. Instead, it only fuels their fire, makes the engines burn and pushes them
further; to only have their drudgery mean nothing. Time after time, throughout history, the world
had seen this pattern show; in factories, huge companies – especially in politics – but even more so
in early twentieth century literature, like The Grapes of Wrath, Elmer Gantry, and Let Us Now
Praise Famous Men. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the settings of the valley of ashes
and Gatsby's mansion to convey that the American Dream is impossible to achieve due to the
greediness of the wealthy. Fitzgerald uses Gatsby's mansion to demonstrate the obsession of the
American
Dream to become rich. While touring throughout the house, Nick and Jordan wander into Gatsby's
library, in hopes of finding Gatsby himself. Instead, they meet Owl eyes, a nosy reader that seems to
understand Gatsby's character better than the entire city. Impressed and slightly jealous of the
wealthy his host has,

Biological Basis Of Behavior : The Great Grey Owls ( Strix...
Biological Basis of Behaviour MR2204 J Mulvany Sensory Systems Georgina Meek 7th November
2014 Introduction Great Grey Owls (Strix nebulosa), use a wide variety of different environmental
factors when hunting a lemming (Lemmus sp.) when it is hidden beneath the snow. The different
sensory systems which the owl possesses are particularly adjusted in order for the owl to most
suitably use them to the best of its ability when hunting. The various sensory systems refer to the
way in which the nervous system receives information from the external environment
(exterocepton), internal environment (interoception, and the position and movement of the bod of
the animal (proprioception). Once the body is given this sensory information, it is used to generate
what the animal's next move will be. Animals need these sensory systems in order to have an
understanding of what is going on within their body and what is happening in the surrounding
environment, Stevens (2013). All animals have adapted in different ways, with different body parts
which are attuned to that animal's habitat. These body parts which are sensitive to different stimuli
act as a filter which detect and respond to stimuli, and ignore others. These body receptors interpret
and convert the type of energy, whether it is light, sound, or smell, and turn it into an electrical
signal to be interpreted by the central nervous system. Each animal's physical make up is attuned to
provide the greatest survival

Essay On Owl Eyes In The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby written in 1925 was a novel that expresses F. Scott Fitzgerald's concerns for the
direction that America was headed in during that decade. During the novel he repeatedly gives
examples of the contrast of the economic classes; the thriving upper class in extravagant living
conditions while the lower class lives in filth like "fields of ashes." To criticize the American upper
class during the nineteen twenties, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses vivid imagery in his revelation of
Gatsby's facade to give the reader an idea of the contrast among the classes of the early nineteenth
century and how it continues to last.
The scene in Gatsby's library acts as a smaller scale introduction to Gatsby's focus on his outer
appearance and his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We begin to see Fitzgerald's imagery in action while he includes a contradiction. The "Old men" of
the party can be seen "pushing young girls in eternal" (indicating constantly till the end of time)
"graceless circles" (17–18). The use of the old men eternally pushing the young girls does not sound
graceless. Fitzgerald's use of these words in this context give it a lighter hearted meaning. Rather
than giving a reason for the young girls to be dancing with the older men, Fitzgerald writes to give
the situation a more positive connotation. The couples there on the dance floor are "superior" as they
hold each other "tortuously, fashionably" (18–19). The fact that the couples enjoying themselves are
holding each other tortuously give the idea that it is against their will, and the fact it is fashionable
indicates that it is being done to keep in line with the popular. The description unfolds to see the
"celebrated tenor" that "had sung in Italian" and the voice of the "notorious contralto" that "had sung
in jazz" (21–22). Here we see Fitzgerald's use of words come into play, describing the tenor as
singing in Italian, but the contralto singing in jazz. His ability to describe a scene with such words
allows the reader to depict the scene of the party and it's splendor. Fitzgerald gives us the moon
"ris[ing] higher" and "floating in the Sound was triangle of silver

Ambrose Bierce Influences
Ambrose Bierce is a phenomenal author who has been heavily influenced by what he endured in the
civil war. Peter J Marrone is quoted with saying, "Ambrose Bierce's martial experience as a Union
soldier in the American Civil War proved to be the seminal episode indelibly impacting his
philosophical, political, and cultural perspectives that would charge his literary constructions
throughout his career." War between nations, war between states or war between your very own
neighbor, war is something that has influenced a nations people. While war between nations is
inarguably destructive to a nation, it is impossible to ignore the influence of war between the
citizens of the same country. An excellent example of an individual heavily influenced by civil war,
who chose to portray this influence in writing is Ambrose Bierce. In his most widely known work
"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," the author makes great use of appearance ... Show more

The author, Ambrose Bierce, writes with a devotion to realism that is made apparent in not only "An
Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" but also one of his most noteworthy short stories;
"Chickamauga." The story tells of a small boy who becomes lost in the woods while entertaining
himself and becomes lost. The boy is then forced to spend the night in the forest and upon waking,
he lays his eyes on what appears to be animals wading across a river. "They crept upon their hands

hanging idle at their sides" (Bierce, "Chickamauga) The author gives an extremely detailed

The Setting Is Dreary And Scary
The initial setting is dreary and scary. The story begins on the bloody streets of a nameless city.
There is an insane character named Rorschach who has a journal entry. There is a butcher who is
washing blood towards a storm drain. The writer seems to be telling us to buckle up and be prepared
for the rest of the novel. Two detectives investigate the murder of Edward Blake and end up
sweeping the case under the rug to avoid any confrontations. We learn that the City we are in is New
York City, this fits the setting previously described. New York City is considered to be a big, scary,
dark and gruesome. We later are at Blake's' funeral and it starts raining which add to the darkness of
the setting. We become focused on Veidt whose memory we enter through flashbacks. The setting
characters and plot all seem to go hand in hand and contribute to the dreariness of the novel. This
novel is good for an ISU because you must understand the environment and history instead of just
reading it. In 1986, a lot of things that were in the Watchmen was in violation, the Watchmen broke
almost every criteria in the comic code authority (CCA). The Watchmen is one of the most
intricately written graphic novels I have ever read. I think that even if we don't read every part of it,
it is still good, although the extra details are beneficial to the obtaining a better understanding.

All of these factors, although there is no certain cause, contribute to the development of the
Dysthymia Disorder, or also known as Persistent Depressive Disorder. The good thing about
Dysthymia Disorder is that there are different types of treatment; medications, therapy, and changes
in one's lifestyle. Medications a doctor might prescribe antidepressants that are fit for that person
such as, Fluoxetine, Zoloft, Amitriptyline, Amoxapine, as well as serotonin inhibitors such as
Duloxetine. One might need to try different medications before they find one that is right for them.
Therapy is another great treatment for Dysthymia Disorder. A therapist can help someone with
Dysthymia Disorder cope with their emotions, understand them, adjust to a change in their life,
encourage positive thoughts, and help show someone a healthy way to express their emotions.
Another suggested treatment for someone with Dysthymia Disorder is lifestyle changes, this
condition is long–lasting so changes in one's lifestyle could help them better cope with their
disorder. Some examples of lifestyle changes are exercising at least 3 times per week, eating a
healthy diet that if fit for a person's weight, avoiding depressants such as drugs and alcohol, picking
up a hobby, and meditating to relax the mind. If these do not work for someone and they are having

Essay on An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce

Ambrose Bierce is a 19th Century mystery story that is set at the time of the American Civil War

that same bridge. The story ends with a curious twist in the plot. The main part of the story is set in

He is creating this event as a fact by using the precise language of a military drill, for example
"position known as support", "parade rest", "hammer resting on the forearm". These details have a
thematic effect as well– one Bierce identifies explicitly. The goal of establishing the reality of the
situation is reinforced by the geographical and political references, for example "Alabama",
"Federal". The arrangement of the troops has a thematic significance as well; Bierce makes the
meaning of the ordered ranks explicit. The narrative tone is clearly sarcastic in the second paragraph
~ "Death is a dignitary..to be received with formal manifestations of respect", "in the code of
military etiquette silence and fixity are forms of deference"; the army are liberal only in its
distribution of suffering and death. By now Bierce's tone is established; dry, ironic, exact, almost
pedantic~ the voice of a satirist. In the third paragraph more about the condemned man is revealed.
Bierce uses detailed descriptions of the man ~ "his features were good– straight nose, firm mouth,
broad forehead, from which his long dark hair was combed straight back, falling behind his ears to
the collar of his well fitting frock". His purpose was for the mind to emphasize feelings more
towards the condemned man. We learn he is a gentleman and Bierce makes it clear by

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald
In his novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald describes the moral decay of the Lost Generation
in the aftermath of World War I. He does this through the interactions of Nick Carraway and his
associates, Jay Gatsby, Jordan Baker, and Tom and Daisy Buchanan, describing through Nick the
attempts of Gatsby to try and rediscover his relationship with Daisy. Gatsby ultimately fails to do so
and ends up dying thinking he could still pursue a lost dream. Fitzgerald uses Gatsby as an example
of the Lost Generation ideals failing in the novel. To help show the "lostness" of the Lost
Generation, which include moral bankruptcy (lack of morals) and indecisiveness on what to do with
their lives, Fitzgerald employs many motifs throughout the novel, ... Show more content on

Her gray–sun strained eyes looked back at me...out of a wan, charming, discontented face" (11). As
Jordan is rather masculine, and discontented, which are characteristics of the Lost Generation and
the 1920s. Members of the Lost Generation would have been through World War I and would have
realized that life can be suddenly cut short, and they would feel discontent with the fact that they
were not getting the most out of life they could unless it was cut short. During the 1920s, women of
the Lost Generation were masculine in order to try and express their independence from the rest of
society. More significantly, her grey eyes are sun–stained. Sun–stained usually refers to something
that has been in the sun for a long time, and is often bleached by the sun so it is white or has lost its
color. Literally, this makes sense; since Jordan is a golfer, she would understandably spend a lot of
time in the sun. However, Fitzgerald also uses the color of her eyes figuratively. One may associate
the term "sun–stained" with a "bleached skull" laying in the desert, which is something that is
lifeless. Jordan seems to be lifeless, as she is morally bankrupt. This moral bankruptcy is shown
through her actions, such as her dishonesty and constant lying. "She was incurably dishonest" (58) is
how Nick describes her. Her lack of ability to stop lying shows that she has no sense of morality that
prevents her from doing so. The description of Jordan's eyes in the beginning set the

What Does Tom Buchanan Symbolize In The Great Gatsby
The word eyes is used eighty–nine times in The Great Gatsby. This is because F. Scott Fitzgerald
wanted eyes play a major role in his book, and they do. He does this by really describing a
character's eyes when he describes a character to the reader. Eyes are also used as a metaphor for
what is revealed and what is not revealed by a character, and the "blindness" of a character. Many
symbols are used by F. Scott Fitzgerald to represent eyes in his book, but the eyes of Dr. T. J.
Eckleburg is the most prominent. Fitzgerald does an amazing job at describing his characters. He
does this by using their eyes. "Two shining, arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face
and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward", this is how he describes Tom
Buchanan (9). Tom Buchanan is portrayed as a person who makes his presence known, and is kinda
a ticking time bomb, so Fitzgerald lets his readers in on this by describing his eyes as ... Show more

The most prominent one are the eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg. This is a sign that some oculist set up
for his practice and then forgot it when he moved away (26). These eyes are described as "his eyes,
dimmed a little by many paintless days, under sun and rain, brood on over the solemn dumping
ground", because the sign stares down on Fitzgerald's characters as they pass underneath (26–27).
They "watch" over the Valley of Ashes. At some point these "eyes" start to represent the eyes of
God. After George finds out about the affair he tells Myrtle that "God knows what you've been
doing, everything you've been doing. You may fool me, but you can't fool God!" and points to the
Dr. T. J. Eckleburg sign (170). When Michaelis is trying to calm down Wilson, after Myrtle's death,

everything", but Michaelis assures him by saying "That's an advertisement"

Natural History of Raptors

The adaptability and evolutionary history of Raptors is remarkable and a learning opportunity for
humans.
Some raptors are acrobats and blur through dangerous tree lines and brush to catch prey with its
agility and speed. Others take a less energy consuming route by soaring high above plains and
grasslands and only take advance towards prey with large talons and its eyesight that is to be
marveled at. A few take an even more conservative approach by feeding on the already deceased and
rotting flesh of almost any carrion. There is also a species of raptor that uses its ability to see at night
as if everything is illuminated and sits or stalks its prey through the night. Raptors have evolved
different methods of survival but all species are related in many ways as well.
Living life every day risking life and limb is something that some raptors have chosen due to their
innate ability to out–match its prey with extreme speed and ultimate agility. These raptors mainly
belong to the family of buteo or hawks; such as the sharp–shinned hawk, Swainson's hawk, and
Cooper's Hawk. They are small, long–tailed hawks with short, rounded wings. "They have small
heads that in flight do not always project beyond the "wrists" of the wings" (allaboutbirds.org). Most
of these species migrate south out of Canada and remain in North America for most of the year,

Blindness In The Great Gatsby
The importance of an eye is that it allows for one to take in what is around them; blindness,
however, can inhibit this. One can see whether something is large or small, bright or dark,
worthwhile or not as long as their vision has not been permanently greyed. In the illustrious world of
1920s America where F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, is set, a story is told of a
persistent, perpetual pursuit of the American dream, and the moral decline of the entire country that
chases it. Fitzgerald shows that in his world of literary symbolism, the eyes of his characters do less
seeing and more discerning between yes or no, good or bad, moral or not. William Shakespeare said
that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Proving this is true, many of the characters in, The Great

Unfortunately a treatment for the inevitable blindness infiltrating the East in The Great Gatsby
seems to hardly exist. The narrator, Nick Carraway, notes that the East is, "haunted for me...
distorted beyond my eyes' power of correction." However he thinks that the best treatment for this
blindness that had been growing in him is to move west. To Carraway, the West is the cure.
However, one could argue that the cure is whatever it is that the glasses on Eckleburg's and Owl–
Eyes's faces represent such as a divine enlightenment since they seem to be immune to the
blindness. The ultimate conclusion is that the proper treatment is something more intangible than a
geographical location or an accessory to improve eyesight. The cure is an unobtainable concept of
what is actually going on in reality. This is because a simple bird's–eye view of life can reveal just

Death and Women in Sadegh Hedayat's " The Blind Owl"
Nasim Basiri
INTRODUCTION
Sadeq Hedayat 's 'The Blind Owl ' is one of the most important literary works in Persian language.
The original Persian text of The Blind Owl, marked "not for sale in Iran," appeared as a
mimeographed publication in India in 1937. It was assumed at the time that Hedayat feared the
repressive rule of Reza Shah; he feared especially that with the publication of this work he might
have violated the established norms. He was aware that the propagation of a message that focused
on the strangulation of the Iranian people, on the denial of individual human rights, and on the need
for individual enlightenment would not remain undetected for ever.

This weariness with life is a symbol of schizoid suicide, which leads into withdrawal into death, into
a ghostly world. In the unconscious, the narrator believes that the corruption of relationships through
sexual contact brings nothingness. This again indicates the presence of a schizoid element in his
mind. A person with a schizoid mind seeks isolation. Union with a woman will not take him into the
path of separateness, so he buries the woman. Now he can be free. He is alone but alive. In the
process, he is denouncing the "inferior" half of himself, the woman in him, the part that he fears may
corrupt and make him diseased. He expresses the intolerable perplexity of woman as a focus of
appearance and reality.
But this distrust of women is not misogyny. It is a result of profound pondering of problems of
human nature and being. Hedayat 's association of women with death, his inability to deal with
realism through the horror of the tragic, and a paranoid attitude accompanying his inability to
tolerate and accept his own mortal reality indicates a form of dissociation from reality which serves
as a clue to his existence problem. In "the Blind Owl", the writer fails to establish existential
authenticity and freedom. This is because in his struggle through re–birth, his view of self, others

The Characteristics Of The Great Horned Owls
What do you think of when you hear the word, "owl?" You might picture a barred owl with its
elegant white feathers and small beak. But what about its distant relative? The Great Horned owl
lives up to its name by its horned ears. This remarkable creature really stands out in the bird family
due to the lack of predators and how small and aggressive it is. The Great Horned Owl is one of
many Owls. Although there are many different species of owls, this one is unique. This particular
owl is small, has a different diet, is widely known, and is one of the more radical looking owls. The
Great Horned Owl is a beautiful, majestic type of bird. It's a smaller kind of owl, but it sure does
pack a punch. It's known for "its long, earlike tufts, intimidating yellow–eyed stare, and deep
hooting voice..."(Great Horned Owl.) Some wonder where this owl is found due to the fact the most
widely known is the barred owl. It's normally found all over the Arctic and South America. These
creatures are nocturnal so they would be easier to spot in the night time. All owls are known for how
aggressive and strong they are. Well, this one in particular lives up to the phrase, "tiny but mighty."
Their bodies average eighteen to twenty one inches. Averaging a wingspan of 3.3–4.8 feet. These
birds can weigh anywhere from two pounds to around 5.5 pounds. Although these birds are already
small in size, the females are slightly larger than the males. As like the rest of the owls, these are

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald Essay
The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a novel that is swimming with several types of
symbolisms and motifs. Each element helps expand the plot of the storyline and in turn, helps us
better analyze the main characters and their thoughts and feelings. The main symbols that will be
analyzed in this essay are the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg and the eyes of 'Owl Eyes', the
symbolization of the green light and the other colors referenced, and locations like the Valley of
Ashes, East and West Egg, and New York City. I will also discuss the meaning behind Daisy's voice
and how Fitzgerald uses language to maintain her personality throughout the novel. Fitzgerald uses
eyes to represent many things throughout the course of this novel. The first time we come across a
reference to eyes, is in chapter 3. A character that Nick calls 'Owl Eyes'. The reason that they give
him this name is because he is wearing "enormous owl–eyed spectacles" (Fitzgerald 51). It seems
that Owl Eyes already has a good amount of insight on Gatsby. "It's a bona fide piece of printed
matter. It fooled me. This fella's a regular Belasco. It's a triumph. What thoroughness! What realism!
Knew when to stop too – didn't cut the pages. But what do you want? What do you expect?"
(Fitzgerald 52). In this quote, Owl Eyes is talking about how he knows that Gatsby is putting up a
front. Everything that he is doing is for show. At first Owl Eyes thinks that all of Gatsby's books

What Does The Eye Symbolism In The Great Gatsby
A situation will never make sense until it has passed, and the importance of someone or something is
never realized until the presence is gone. Fitzgerald shows this in many ways with the group he has
created whether it has dealt with missed opportunities or the death of a friend, the ultimate lesson is
that time passes and there's no going back to see what was missed before. An example of missing
signs and warnings that are blatantly given is Owl Eyes, who more than lived up to the name. Not
only are owls a symbol for wisdom, but many Native American tribes believe owls to be omens for
multiple things such as death of a loved one, carrying away children who spot them at night, and
holding and sending messages or warnings from the afterlife. ... Show more content on

Eckleburg's eyes. The eyes were introduced to the reader in a rather odd way, seeing as they were
described in horrific detail before telling the reader that the eyes were on a billboard, which gives
the eyes an entirely new meaning. "Nick goes on for three sentences about these weird, disembodied
eyes before actually explaining that they're on a billboard. He gives your mind time to picture eerie
images, to wonder what's going on, even to form other notion of what the eyes could be." (Shmoop
Editorial Team. "T. J. Eckleburg in The Great Gatsby." Shmoop, Shmoop University, 11 Nov. 2008).
The eyes also have a divine aspect from being referenced as all–seeing and a "watchful vigil".

as the characters go through their trials, not that they listen to the reminder. "The first time we see

Symbols In The Great Gatsby
How would you describe the roaring 20's? Was it all fairytales In the novel "The Great Gatsby" by F.
Scott Fitzgerald there are symbols that support the main theme and other ones surrounding it. For
example, the green light and how is shows Gatsby's dream. As well as the Valley of Ashes and how
it symbolizes the unattainability of the american dream. Last, but, not least doctor T.J. Eckleburg's
eyes overlooking everyone as an all seeing god. All in all the three symbols corrupt to
unattainability of the American dream. The Valley of ashes, land of the forgotten and despair. "This
is a valley of ashes–a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque
gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a
transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air"
(fitzgerald 23). The valley of ashes, one of the most important symbols to the theme of great gatsby.
The valley of ashes gives the reader a great sense of truth in lives of most people during the roaring
20's. It shows the hardship of the american dream as well as the struggle to achieve what so many
want with the little that they have. Fitzgerald describes this place as a "desilet area" and "where
ashes grow like wheat" It just goes to show the other side of the dream. A few moments after
"Wilson's glazed eyes turned out to the ashheaps, where small grey clouds took on fantastic shape

Capitalist Americ How Society Lost Itself
Capitalist America: How Society Lost Itself
Since the beginning of the Middle Ages around 400 A.D., the economic model of capitalism has
been applied upon communities with the intent of experiencing the greatest amount of growth in
wealth in the shortest amount of time. In the context of "The Great Gatsby", for America, the end of
World War I in 1919 represented a great opportunity for capitalists around the nation to further grow
their wealth with what seemed to be no downside. However, capitals reliance on sign exchange
value, where individuals subscribe to beliefs and purchase goods because of what they represent,
causes drastic changes in society. The value of interpersonal relations diminishes, and the very
meaning of reality is over–proliferated and then deconstructed. The "roaring twenties" represented a
time where no true reality was accepted until it was skewed by the wealthy. Fitzgerald utilizes the
character of Owl Eyes and the billboard of Dr. T.J Eckleburg to highlight the substantial differences
between the illusive façade the elite class attempt to create and the reality of the 1920's.
Owl Eyes represents Fitzgerald's archetype for the common person that is part of the wealthy crowd
for the era, one who is prone to buying into the illusions that the wealthy capitalists attempt to create
for themselves. Throughout the novel the reoccurring motif of lavish parties is brought up, within
one such event, Owl Eyes is introduced as a drunkard loitering within

Why Do Keystone Species Collapse
A keystone species is a species whose presence in an ecosystem is crucial in determining the nature
of the entire community, including its species composition and ecosystem functioning.
Unlike dominant species, a species that greatly affects a community due to its large biomass or
abundance, keystone species are usually not the most abundant species in a community. Even
though they are present in relatively small numbers, the individuals of a keystone species
profoundly influence the entire community because they often effect the amount of available
resources. Therefore, although both dominant and keystone species greatly affect a community, the
removal of a keystone species can cause an ecosystem to collapse due to their small numbers and ...

Then, smaller animal populations, such as rodents, rabbits, and insects decreased because the plants
they depended on for food were now less abundant. In addition, the number of foxes, hawks, and
owls that prey on smaller animals and the number of ravens, eagles, and other scavengers that eat
wolf kill decreased. Therefore, the initial disappearance of wolves resulted in communities with
considerably less biodiversity. However, once wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National
Park in 1995, substantial changes occurred for other species in the park. The top predators' effects
have ranged from altering relationships among predator and prey species to transforming vegetation
profiles. For example, coyotes are potential prey for wolves, and wolf packs have decimated some
coyote populations. The reduction in coyotes had allowed populations of the coyotes' prey, such as
ground squirrels and chipmunks, to increase. Also, scavengers such as ravens, bald eagles, and
grizzly bears have benefited from eating the scraps from wolf kills. In addition, it is predicted that a
decrease in wolves prey such as elk should cause broader, long–term impacts. A decline in elk
population would

to provide a break from the plot of the story, however, he serves a vital role in the novel as he
represents the foundation of society as a whole. Some academia would assert that perhaps Owl Eyes
can be described as "the avatar of the sightless T.J. Eckleburg," however, a more wholesome
explanation can be developed through a deeper interpretation (Shaw). Shaw points out that "[Owl
Eyes] is constantly wiping his rain covered glasses in a futile effort to see what's going on" (Shaw).
What this indicates is that Owl Eyes is a character who, just like the rest of society, is blinded. Shaw
points to the "rain covered glasses" to convey that Owl Eyes is the representation of all those who
fall victim to the tricks of the wealthy, in this case, a mobster is hidden behind pages and pages of
respected literature which have no connection to Gatsby's identity for himself. The existence of Owl
Eyes importance is contextualized only in coexistence with the billboard of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg.
Eckleburg, an inanimate object represents the truth of the Roaring Twenties, "Above the grey land

Great Grey Owls Essay
Great Gray Owls
I learned many interesting things by reading this article on great grey owls. I really had no
knowledge of this species before I began, but I now have a certain respect for them because of the
familiarity I have gained. One interesting aspect of these owls is their hunting methods.
The great gray owl is a very aggressive hunter when it finds its prey. "These owls don't just pounce,
the plunge" (Warren, p.78). First, they locate their prey with the help of their large facial disk that
funnels sound to their ears. Then, they tuck their extremely sharp hooked–shaped claws under their
chin and torpedo headfirst towards the ground to snatch their next meal. In winter, ... Show more

Conservation biologist Jim Duncan said that during the winter, "It's as if there's a big winter sale on
voles, and great gray owls are the only customers in the store" (Warren, p.79). Sounds like a pretty
good sale to me! (Great Gray Owls, 2005)
Another very intriguing fact that I learned is that great gray owls make very devoted parents. This
was discovered when it was observed that mothers will practically starve themselves when prey is
scarce. Females sometimes even lose one–third of their body weight in just one month. They do this
so their chick can eat the maximum amount of food as possible and grow up healthy. (Great Gray
Owls, 2005)
Great gray owls weigh only two to three pounds as adults, but their wingspans can be 60 inches
across and 33 inches high. The size of this animal makes it difficult for them to maneuver very well
in areas of many trees that create dense vegetation, so they must find open spaces to live. (Great
Gray Owls, 2005)
Only two–thirds of owlets make it without being eaten by predators such as ravens, great horned
owls, or weasels. This is so because once a chick breaks out of its shell, the area around the nest
develops a distinct aroma and it immediately becomes a danger zone for them. Owls begin to fly
when they are about seven to eight weeks old, but until then they must disperse from the nest.

Contrasting Themes Essay
Contrasting Themes?
When has one ever seen a film that could compare to the words written in the book? Movies are
almost always different, almost always never compare, and almost always have a different premise
than that expressed by a novel. The reason, one wonders, is because you have to keep the audience
interested. Ambrose Bierce's short story and Robert Enrico's film adaptation entitled, "An
Occurrence on Owl Creek Bridge," is a great example of differing themes in a piece of work. In the
entry, evident themes include: reality verses imagination and deception, war, death and dying, and
time. Some are expressed in the film clearly, while others are hidden to the untrained eye. Bierce

Though both the motion picture and short narrative both fully cover the theme of imagination verses

saw the very insect upon them..." and being able to see the "grey eye" of his shooter allows the
readers to make their own assumptions that this is probably not reality (Bierce). In the film, the
ending came as a shock almost, yet in the story, it was not that big of a surprise (An Occurrence at
Owl Creek Bridge). There are no indications that the lead character was dreaming. The theme of
reality verses imagination leads to another important theme that can be found as the embodiment of
the story. It is evident that Bierce was making many references to war in his entry. The whole story
was built upon the idea; from the setting to the cause of Fahrquhar's death and from the shots being
fired to the reference to the Confederacy. War was directly linked to the previously mentioned
theme, imagination verses reality. The central character wants to be a war hero; which is an apparent
desire he had since he could not actually take part in the war effort for reasons not mentioned. Thus
his view of war was seen through a rose–tinted glass metaphorically speaking.

The Importance of the Automobile in The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby was written about a time of gaiety for a certain set of people.
One of the major thematic aspects of the book is driving and the automobile. At the time the book
was written the car had begun its establishment as a national institution. This is apparent in one of
the central events in the book. Tom's unfaithfulness first comes to light from a car accident in Santa
Barbara. He misguides the car and the misdirection of his life is made glaringly evident. The
automobile affected Fitzgerald and it influenced the writing in The Great Gatsby.
Driving is equated with living. Nick Carraway, describing their ill–fated trip from New York in ...

Tom is hulking and has a definitive presence, much like a large car or bus. Tom drives a station
wagon, extremely utilitarian. In the end, Tom becomes Daisy's choice because, like a station wagon,
he is large, solid and the easiest way to go. On the other hand Gatsby's car is described as "a rich
cream color, bright with nickel, swollen here and there in its monstrous length with triumphant
hatboxes and supper–boxes and tool–boxes, and terraces with a labyrinth of windshields that
mirrored a dozen suns"(68). This description can be very accurately applied to Gatsby as well as his
car. He is white, but does not resonate with the same WASP purity that the Buchanans do. Thus he
can be construed as "cream" colored. He is very brightly rich but there is falseness to it, much like
nickel instead of silver. He is "swollen here and there" with the rumors about who he is and where
he is from. These rumors bolster his image and swell him up. He has many boxes, or occupations,
and many different faces that line him and define him like the various boxes that define the car. The
most accurate comparison of all is that of Gatsby and his car's labyrinth of windshields. The image
this creates is a glass maze, apparently easy to see through but difficult to solve. He provides a
mirror for the sun and happiness of everyone else, not only those at his parties, but Daisy as well.
These mirrors and windshields take the attention away from him, and protect him from the
revelation

Ambrose Bierces’An Occurence At Owl Creek Bridge Essay
Ambrose Bierces' Story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge"
Ambrose Bierces' story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" tells the story of a confederate
secessionist, who is being hanged by Union troops. At the time of the hanging, the soldiers drop him
from the bridge. Luckily, just as he falls the rope snaps and the man dives into the "sluggish stream".
He miraculously takes off his ropes and swims away. When he reaches the bank of the creek, he runs
for what seems like forever. He finally reaches home, where his family is waiting so anxiously for
him. However, Bierce chooses to surround this intriguing tell with elements that carry visual,
concrete, and intangible symbolism. The symbolic elements of "An Occurrence at Owl Creek ...
Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bierce chooses to beginning this captivating tell at a bridge. He writes, "A man stood upon a railroad
bridge in Northern Alabama, looking down into the swift water..." He then choose to conclude this
tell at the same bridge. He writes, "Peyton Fahrquar was dead; his body, with a broken neck, swung
gently from side to side beneath the timbers of the Owl Creek Bridge." With so much focus on this
element, the bridge, the reader must realize that it offers more than just a setting. It is the symbolic
connection between reality and illusion, life and death.
First, it is the symbolic connection between reality and illusion. Throughout the course of the story,
Peyton Fahrquars' perception of reality is completely warped. He believes that he miraculously
loosed his ropes, eluded the Union troop, and escaped home. This in reality is absolutely impossible.
The bridge (a solid structure, with no escape route available) allows the reader to maintain a sense of
reality while still being able to grasp Fahrquars' illusion. Secondly, the bridge is the symbolic
connection between life and death. Most people view death as a crossing over and beyond death is a
"better life". Now taking that ideology in context with the story, Peyton Fahrquar wanted to burn
down the bridge to stop the Union Army from advancing and gaining access to the Confederate
lands. The Union Army, who symbolically represents death, and the Confederate Army, who
symbolically represents life,

An Occurence At Owl Creek Bridge And The Necklace

  • 1. An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge and The Necklace People always like to impute all the misfortunes they have been through to their unfair destinies. However, most of the occurrences happen in the human society is not random, and every consequence must have a corresponding reason. Sometimes, the motive of one's action is hard to find because it may be psychogenic reasons that hide deep in one's mind. Sigmund Freud comes up the idea that "human beings are motivated, even driven, by desires, fears, needs, and conflicts of which they are unaware" (Tyson 14–15). In most of the literature works, narrators' unconscious egos like desires and believes are often the most important factors to affect their behaviors and cause the consequential narrative events happen. Both of protagonists in the articles, Peyton Farquhar in Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and Madame Loisel in Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace," are struggled with their identities, and suffered from the delusions caused by their egos, which lead themselves to make the irretrievable mistakes, and finally, they fall to the fantasies again to defend the consequences caused by their mistakes. Both of the protagonists are not satisfied with their current identities, their desires blind their minds, and make them easily fall into unrealistic delusions. In the "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," in order to create suspense, Bierce does not mention the narrator's identity until Part II. He describes Peyton Farquhar as a "well–to–do planter;" Farquhar's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Owl Creek Bridge Symbolism The use of expertise literary technique is what authors use in order to immediately catch the attention of the readers. This is exactly what Ambrose Bierce has done in her book titled An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. This book takes place during the Civil War. By reading this book, the reader will further understand the much deeper meanings that can be understood using simple items. Ambrose Bierce uses literary techniques such as symbolism, imagery, and irony in order to create a foreshadowing or shock effect to catch the reader's attention. Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. Bierce uses many examples of this throughout the story. The soldier's guns that they hold during the hanging foreshadow a shock effect, which shows that something wrong is going to happen. The details that the main character expresses are too vivid such as the watch that he gives the soldier which shows that he is giving his time away to this man who ends up killing him. Another symbol is that the color of the main character's eyes is grey, as well as the soldier who hangs him. This entitles that there is a fading line between reality and fantasy. The main character's neck and wrists appear to be in pain while he is in his fantasy. This indicates the pain that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bierce uses multiple examples of imagery throughout his text. As he is about to be hanged, he vividly glances at driftwood slowly dancing as it floated down the river. The main character also noticed how the sun touches the water to really show the vividness of his mind. Another example is when the main character supposedly escapes and falls into the river. As he crashes into the water he says that the water rose around him trapping him. This also triggered his neck pain which relates back to him being hanged. By using imagery in the text, the reader understands how the author juxtaposes life and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many other National Parks with unique beauty, striking features, intricate geology, and historical significance that many forget about or brush aside. One of which is Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. Petrified Forest is arguably the most well known of all areas that contain these fossilized woods and boasts a rare Arizona grassland environment, an abundance of prehistoric cultural artifacts, and around 290 plant and animal species. Geologically, Petrified Forest National Park stands out with stunning colors, formations, and variety. Beginning with its name, Petrified Forest is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many petroglyphs, animal fossils, and artifcats are visible throughout this formation in addition to the exposed, petrified logs. Chinle is broken up into smaller members and from oldest to youngest they are– Mesa Redondo Member, Blue Mesa Member, Sonsela Member, Petrified Forest Member, and Owl Rock Member. Each member is made up of unique materials that are responsible for their remarkable color. The Paleozoic sandy conglomerate and siltstone of Mesa Redondo Member is red, yellow and purple and was once part of the river's floodplain before its deposition between 225–227 million years ago. The Blue Mesa Member consists of multicolored mudstone cobbles in blue, green, grey, and purple colors and dates to 220–225 million years ago. These older members make up the badlands of Petrified Forest and display their colorful banding. The 216 million year old Sonsela member includes a few smaller bedded areas with brown cross–bedded sandstones, more multicolored mudstones in blue, grey, and purple, white and grey sandstone beds, and white cross– bedded sandstone conglomerates with an assortment of sizes for cobbles. The Petrified Forest member, an area within the Painted Desert feature, is approximately 213 million years old with thick red and brown mud and sandstone layers. As one would guess, this member contains a good majority of the fossilized wood segments and uranium–bearing minerals that are often present with such organic matter as trees and logs. At 205 million years old, the youngest Owl Rock Member represents an area where there had once been a dry inland lakebed, leaving observable trace minerals from the evaporation process. The colors found here are typically light to dark red with orange and white, resulting from the mudstone littered with thin layers of limestone throughout. The wide variety of color ... When in moments of distress, time can go extremely slow or when having fun, time can go fast. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge written by Ambrose Bierce starts by Peyton Farquhar being prepared to be hanged for interfering with the railroad. He then goes into a dream state where he is free and has escaped to his wife and kid. Farquhar is harshly taken away from this dream with the snap of the rope and him proceeding to be hanged. What the role of "Owl Eyes" in the novel? Find supporting evidence and examples from the novel. STARTING "above the grey land and the spactor T. J. Eckleburg" "The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic–their retinas are one yard high. They look out of no face, but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a nonexistent nose" This is how T. J. Eckleburg is first introduced into the story. Dr. T.J. Eckleburg's eyes represent the corruption of people. His eyes stare down on the characters of the story as they pass through the valley of ashes into the city. They stare down on Tom going to meet his mistress who he is involves in an adulterous affair with, and on Gatsby speeding through with Nick on the way to lunch to meet Wolfsheim, the man who fixed the 1919 World Series, and finally they stare down on Daisy rushing back from the city when she hits Myrtle and does not stop. ... It does not matter that morally Tom is a bad person, he is racist, he cheats on his wife, he neglects his only child, the list could go on and on. This shows that a mans success is not measured by how good of a person he is, but by how much money he has. • 11. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald There are moments in life that the world seems to be turned upside down and inside out; As if the greatest moments come to the least deserving person, and the passionate and the diligent only get a drop of achievement. These moments can come in waves of frustration, anger, envy – for the struggling – tearing the hard workers to pieces when they see the undeserving take in praise and achievements, but still pushing on towards their dream, these workers don't bend to the challenges that are thrown in the way. Instead, it only fuels their fire, makes the engines burn and pushes them further; to only have their drudgery mean nothing. Time after time, throughout history, the world had seen this pattern show; in factories, huge companies – especially in politics – but even more so in early twentieth century literature, like The Grapes of Wrath, Elmer Gantry, and Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the settings of the valley of ashes and Gatsby's mansion to convey that the American Dream is impossible to achieve due to the greediness of the wealthy. Fitzgerald uses Gatsby's mansion to demonstrate the obsession of the American Dream to become rich. While touring throughout the house, Nick and Jordan wander into Gatsby's library, in hopes of finding Gatsby himself. Instead, they meet Owl eyes, a nosy reader that seems to understand Gatsby's character better than the entire city. Impressed and slightly jealous of the wealthy his host has, ... Biological Basis of Behaviour MR2204 J Mulvany Sensory Systems Georgina Meek 7th November 2014 Introduction Great Grey Owls (Strix nebulosa), use a wide variety of different environmental factors when hunting a lemming (Lemmus sp.) when it is hidden beneath the snow. The different sensory systems which the owl possesses are particularly adjusted in order for the owl to most suitably use them to the best of its ability when hunting. The various sensory systems refer to the way in which the nervous system receives information from the external environment (exterocepton), internal environment (interoception, and the position and movement of the bod of the animal (proprioception). Once the body is given this sensory information, it is used to generate what the animal's next move will be. Animals need these sensory systems in order to have an understanding of what is going on within their body and what is happening in the surrounding environment, Stevens (2013). All animals have adapted in different ways, with different body parts which are attuned to that animal's habitat. These body parts which are sensitive to different stimuli act as a filter which detect and respond to stimuli, and ignore others. These body receptors interpret and convert the type of energy, whether it is light, sound, or smell, and turn it into an electrical signal to be interpreted by the central nervous system. Each animal's physical make up is attuned to provide the greatest survival ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Essay On Owl Eyes In The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby written in 1925 was a novel that expresses F. Scott Fitzgerald's concerns for the direction that America was headed in during that decade. During the novel he repeatedly gives examples of the contrast of the economic classes; the thriving upper class in extravagant living conditions while the lower class lives in filth like "fields of ashes." To criticize the American upper class during the nineteen twenties, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses vivid imagery in his revelation of Gatsby's facade to give the reader an idea of the contrast among the classes of the early nineteenth century and how it continues to last. The scene in Gatsby's library acts as a smaller scale introduction to Gatsby's focus on his outer appearance and his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We begin to see Fitzgerald's imagery in action while he includes a contradiction. The "Old men" of the party can be seen "pushing young girls in eternal" (indicating constantly till the end of time) "graceless circles" (17–18). The use of the old men eternally pushing the young girls does not sound graceless. Fitzgerald's use of these words in this context give it a lighter hearted meaning. Rather than giving a reason for the young girls to be dancing with the older men, Fitzgerald writes to give the situation a more positive connotation. The couples there on the dance floor are "superior" as they hold each other "tortuously, fashionably" (18–19). The fact that the couples enjoying themselves are holding each other tortuously give the idea that it is against their will, and the fact it is fashionable indicates that it is being done to keep in line with the popular. The description unfolds to see the "celebrated tenor" that "had sung in Italian" and the voice of the "notorious contralto" that "had sung in jazz" (21–22). Here we see Fitzgerald's use of words come into play, describing the tenor as singing in Italian, but the contralto singing in jazz. His ability to describe a scene with such words allows the reader to depict the scene of the party and it's splendor. • 17. Ambrose Bierce Influences Ambrose Bierce is a phenomenal author who has been heavily influenced by what he endured in the civil war. Peter J Marrone is quoted with saying, "Ambrose Bierce's martial experience as a Union soldier in the American Civil War proved to be the seminal episode indelibly impacting his philosophical, political, and cultural perspectives that would charge his literary constructions throughout his career." War between nations, war between states or war between your very own neighbor, war is something that has influenced a nations people. While war between nations is inarguably destructive to a nation, it is impossible to ignore the influence of war between the citizens of the same country. An excellent example of an individual heavily influenced by civil war, who chose to portray this influence in writing is Ambrose Bierce. The boy is then forced to spend the night in the forest and upon waking, he lays his eyes on what appears to be animals wading across a river. "They crept upon their hands and knees. There is an insane character named Rorschach who has a journal entry. There is a butcher who is washing blood towards a storm drain. The writer seems to be telling us to buckle up and be prepared for the rest of the novel. Two detectives investigate the murder of Edward Blake and end up sweeping the case under the rug to avoid any confrontations. We learn that the City we are in is New York City, this fits the setting previously described. New York City is considered to be a big, scary, dark and gruesome. We later are at Blake's' funeral and it starts raining which add to the darkness of the setting. We become focused on Veidt whose memory we enter through flashbacks. The setting characters and plot all seem to go hand in hand and contribute to the dreariness of the novel. During the 1920s, women of the Lost Generation were masculine in order to try and express their independence from the rest of society. More significantly, her grey eyes are sun–stained. Sun–stained usually refers to something that has been in the sun for a long time, and is often bleached by the sun so it is white or has lost its color. Literally, this makes sense; since Jordan is a golfer, she would understandably spend a lot of time in the sun. However, Fitzgerald also uses the color of her eyes figuratively. One may associate the term "sun–stained" with a "bleached skull" laying in the desert, which is something that is lifeless. Jordan seems to be lifeless, as she is morally bankrupt. This moral bankruptcy is shown through her actions, such as her dishonesty and constant lying. "She was incurably dishonest" (58) is how Nick describes her. Others take a less energy consuming route by soaring high above plains and grasslands and only take advance towards prey with large talons and its eyesight that is to be marveled at. Death and Women in Sadegh Hedayat Blind Owl by Nasim Basiri Death and Women in Sadegh Hedayat's " The Blind Owl" Nasim Basiri INTRODUCTION Sadeq Hedayat 's 'The Blind Owl ' is one of the most important literary works in Persian language. The original Persian text of The Blind Owl, marked "not for sale in Iran," appeared as a mimeographed publication in India in 1937. It was assumed at the time that Hedayat feared the repressive rule of Reza Shah; he feared especially that with the publication of this work he might have violated the established norms. He was aware that the propagation of a message that focused on the strangulation of the Iranian people, on the denial of individual human rights, and on the need for individual enlightenment would not remain undetected for ever. The central ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This weariness with life is a symbol of schizoid suicide, which leads into withdrawal into death, into a ghostly world. In the unconscious, the narrator believes that the corruption of relationships through sexual contact brings nothingness. This again indicates the presence of a schizoid element in his mind. A person with a schizoid mind seeks isolation. Union with a woman will not take him into the path of separateness, so he buries the woman. Now he can be free. He is alone but alive. In the process, he is denouncing the "inferior" half of himself, the woman in him, the part that he fears may corrupt and make him diseased. He expresses the intolerable perplexity of woman as a focus of appearance and reality. But this distrust of women is not misogyny. It is a result of profound pondering of problems of human nature and being. Hedayat 's association of women with death, his inability to deal with realism through the horror of the tragic, and a paranoid attitude accompanying his inability to tolerate and accept his own mortal reality indicates a form of dissociation from reality which serves as a clue to his existence problem. In "the Blind Owl", the writer fails to establish existential authenticity and freedom. This is because in his struggle through re–birth, his view of self, others and the world in general is ... • 55. The Characteristics Of The Great Horned Owls What do you think of when you hear the word, "owl?" You might picture a barred owl with its elegant white feathers and small beak. But what about its distant relative? The Great Horned owl lives up to its name by its horned ears. This remarkable creature really stands out in the bird family due to the lack of predators and how small and aggressive it is. The Great Horned Owl is one of many Owls. Although there are many different species of owls, this one is unique. This particular owl is small, has a different diet, is widely known, and is one of the more radical looking owls. The Great Horned Owl is a beautiful, majestic type of bird. It's a smaller kind of owl, but it sure does pack a punch. It's known for "its long, earlike tufts, intimidating yellow–eyed stare, and deep hooting voice..."(Great Horned Owl.) Some wonder where this owl is found due to the fact the most widely known is the barred owl. It's normally found all over the Arctic and South America. These creatures are nocturnal so they would be easier to spot in the night time. All owls are known for how aggressive and strong they are. Well, this one in particular lives up to the phrase, "tiny but mighty." Their bodies average eighteen to twenty one inches. Averaging a wingspan of 3.3–4.8 feet. • 57. The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald Essay The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a novel that is swimming with several types of symbolisms and motifs. Each element helps expand the plot of the storyline and in turn, helps us better analyze the main characters and their thoughts and feelings. The main symbols that will be analyzed in this essay are the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg and the eyes of 'Owl Eyes', the symbolization of the green light and the other colors referenced, and locations like the Valley of Ashes, East and West Egg, and New York City. I will also discuss the meaning behind Daisy's voice and how Fitzgerald uses language to maintain her personality throughout the novel. Fitzgerald uses eyes to represent many things throughout the course of this novel. The first time we come across a reference to eyes, is in chapter 3. A character that Nick calls 'Owl Eyes'. The reason that they give him this name is because he is wearing "enormous owl–eyed spectacles" (Fitzgerald 51). It seems that Owl Eyes already has a good amount of insight on Gatsby. "It's a bona fide piece of printed matter. It fooled me. This fella's a regular Belasco. It's a triumph. What thoroughness! What realism! Knew when to stop too – didn't cut the pages. But what do you want? What do you expect?" (Fitzgerald 52). In this quote, Owl Eyes is talking about how he knows that Gatsby is putting up a front. Everything that he is doing is for show. • 59. What Does The Eye Symbolism In The Great Gatsby A situation will never make sense until it has passed, and the importance of someone or something is never realized until the presence is gone. Fitzgerald shows this in many ways with the group he has created whether it has dealt with missed opportunities or the death of a friend, the ultimate lesson is that time passes and there's no going back to see what was missed before. An example of missing signs and warnings that are blatantly given is Owl Eyes, who more than lived up to the name. Not only are owls a symbol for wisdom, but many Native American tribes believe owls to be omens for multiple things such as death of a loved one, carrying away children who spot them at night, and holding and sending messages or warnings from the afterlife. ... The eyes were introduced to the reader in a rather odd way, seeing as they were described in horrific detail before telling the reader that the eyes were on a billboard, which gives the eyes an entirely new meaning. He gives your mind time to picture eerie images, to wonder what's going on, even to form other notion of what the eyes could be." (Shmoop Editorial Team. "T. J. Eckleburg in The Great Gatsby." Shmoop, Shmoop University, 11 Nov. 2008). The eyes also have a divine aspect from being referenced as all–seeing and a "watchful vigil". "George takes Myrtle to the window and tells her she can't fool God. wilson makes the same connection you might be: the eyes of T.J. Eckleburg are always watching, and so are the eyes of God." Scott Fitzgerald there are symbols that support the main theme and other ones surrounding it. For example, the green light and how is shows Gatsby's dream. As well as the Valley of Ashes and how it symbolizes the unattainability of the american dream. Last, but, not least doctor T.J. Eckleburg's eyes overlooking everyone as an all seeing god. All in all the three symbols corrupt to unattainability of the American dream. The Valley of ashes, land of the forgotten and despair. "This is a valley of ashes–a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air" (fitzgerald 23). Capitalist Americ How Society Lost Itself Capitalist America: How Society Lost Itself Since the beginning of the Middle Ages around 400 A.D., the economic model of capitalism has been applied upon communities with the intent of experiencing the greatest amount of growth in wealth in the shortest amount of time. In the context of "The Great Gatsby", for America, the end of World War I in 1919 represented a great opportunity for capitalists around the nation to further grow their wealth with what seemed to be no downside. However, capitals reliance on sign exchange value, where individuals subscribe to beliefs and purchase goods because of what they represent, causes drastic changes in society. The value of interpersonal relations diminishes, and the very meaning of reality is over–proliferated and then deconstructed. The "roaring twenties" represented a time where no true reality was accepted until it was skewed by the wealthy. Fitzgerald utilizes the character of Owl Eyes and the billboard of Dr. T.J Eckleburg to highlight the substantial differences between the illusive façade the elite class attempt to create and the reality of the 1920's. Owl Eyes represents Fitzgerald's archetype for the common person that is part of the wealthy crowd for the era, one who is prone to buying into the illusions that the wealthy capitalists attempt to create for themselves. Why Do Keystone Species Collapse A keystone species is a species whose presence in an ecosystem is crucial in determining the nature of the entire community, including its species composition and ecosystem functioning. Unlike dominant species, a species that greatly affects a community due to its large biomass or abundance, keystone species are usually not the most abundant species in a community. Even though they are present in relatively small numbers, the individuals of a keystone species profoundly influence the entire community because they often effect the amount of available resources. Therefore, although both dominant and keystone species greatly affect a community, the removal of a keystone species can cause an ecosystem to collapse due to their small numbers and ... In addition, the number of foxes, hawks, and owls that prey on smaller animals and the number of ravens, eagles, and other scavengers that eat wolf kill decreased. Therefore, the initial disappearance of wolves resulted in communities with considerably less biodiversity. However, once wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park in 1995, substantial changes occurred for other species in the park. The top predators' effects have ranged from altering relationships among predator and prey species to transforming vegetation profiles. For example, coyotes are potential prey for wolves, and wolf packs have decimated some coyote populations. The reduction in coyotes had allowed populations of the coyotes' prey, such as ground squirrels and chipmunks, to increase. Also, scavengers such as ravens, bald eagles, and grizzly bears have benefited from eating the scraps from wolf kills. In addition, it is predicted that a decrease in wolves prey such as elk should cause broader, long–term impacts. A decline in elk population would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Readers may view Owl Eyes as a mere whim to provide a break from the plot of the story, however, he serves a vital role in the novel as he represents the foundation of society as a whole. Some academia would assert that perhaps Owl Eyes can be described as "the avatar of the sightless T.J. Eckleburg," however, a more wholesome explanation can be developed through a deeper interpretation (Shaw). Shaw points out that "[Owl Eyes] is constantly wiping his rain covered glasses in a futile effort to see what's going on" (Shaw). What this indicates is that Owl Eyes is a character who, just like the rest of society, is blinded. Shaw points to the "rain covered glasses" to convey that Owl Eyes is the representation of all those who fall victim to the tricks of the wealthy, in this case, a mobster is hidden behind pages and pages of respected literature which have no connection to Gatsby's identity for himself. The existence of Owl Eyes importance is contextualized only in coexistence with the billboard of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg. Eckleburg, an inanimate object represents the truth of the Roaring Twenties, "Above the grey land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it, you perceive, after a moment, the eyes of Doctor T. • 69. Great Grey Owls Essay Great Gray Owls I learned many interesting things by reading this article on great grey owls. I really had no knowledge of this species before I began, but I now have a certain respect for them because of the familiarity I have gained. One interesting aspect of these owls is their hunting methods. The great gray owl is a very aggressive hunter when it finds its prey. "These owls don't just pounce, the plunge" (Warren, p.78). First, they locate their prey with the help of their large facial disk that funnels sound to their ears. Then, they tuck their extremely sharp hooked–shaped claws under their chin and torpedo headfirst towards the ground to snatch their next meal. In winter, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conservation biologist Jim Duncan said that during the winter, "It's as if there's a big winter sale on voles, and great gray owls are the only customers in the store" (Warren, p.79). Sounds like a pretty good sale to me! (Great Gray Owls, 2005) Another very intriguing fact that I learned is that great gray owls make very devoted parents. This was discovered when it was observed that mothers will practically starve themselves when prey is scarce. Females sometimes even lose one–third of their body weight in just one month. They do this so their chick can eat the maximum amount of food as possible and grow up healthy. (Great Gray Owls, 2005) Great gray owls weigh only two to three pounds as adults, but their wingspans can be 60 inches across and 33 inches high. The size of this animal makes it difficult for them to maneuver very well in areas of many trees that create dense vegetation, so they must find open spaces to live. (Great Gray Owls, 2005) Only two–thirds of owlets make it without being eaten by predators such as ravens, great horned owls, or weasels. This is so because once a chick breaks out of its shell, the area around the nest develops a distinct aroma and it immediately becomes a danger zone for them. Owls begin to fly when they are about seven to eight weeks old, but until then they must disperse from the nest. Despite their need to part from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Contrasting Themes Essay Contrasting Themes? When has one ever seen a film that could compare to the words written in the book? Movies are almost always different, almost always never compare, and almost always have a different premise than that expressed by a novel. The reason, one wonders, is because you have to keep the audience interested. Ambrose Bierce's short story and Robert Enrico's film adaptation entitled, "An Occurrence on Owl Creek Bridge," is a great example of differing themes in a piece of work. In the entry, evident themes include: reality verses imagination and deception, war, death and dying, and time. Some are expressed in the film clearly, while others are hidden to the untrained eye. Bierce laid a concrete foundation for the theme of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though both the motion picture and short narrative both fully cover the theme of imagination verses reality, the story allowed its readers to find clues that he was most likely dreaming. Statements and observations such as he could view "the individual trees, the leaves and veining of each leaf – he saw the very insect upon them..." and being able to see the "grey eye" of his shooter allows the readers to make their own assumptions that this is probably not reality (Bierce). In the film, the ending came as a shock almost, yet in the story, it was not that big of a surprise (An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge). There are no indications that the lead character was dreaming. The theme of reality verses imagination leads to another important theme that can be found as the embodiment of the story. It is evident that Bierce was making many references to war in his entry. The whole story was built upon the idea; from the setting to the cause of Fahrquhar's death and from the shots being fired to the reference to the Confederacy. War was directly linked to the previously mentioned theme, imagination verses reality. The central character wants to be a war hero; which is an apparent desire he had since he could not actually take part in the war effort for reasons not mentioned. Thus his view of war was seen through a rose–tinted glass metaphorically speaking. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This description can be very accurately applied to Gatsby as well as his car. He is white, but does not resonate with the same WASP purity that the Buchanans do. He writes, "Peyton Fahrquar was dead; his body, with a broken neck, swung gently from side to side beneath the timbers of the Owl Creek Bridge." With so much focus on this element, the bridge, the reader must realize that it offers more than just a setting. It is the symbolic connection between reality and illusion, life and death. First, it is the symbolic connection between reality and illusion. Throughout the course of the story, Peyton Fahrquars' perception of reality is completely warped. He believes that he miraculously loosed his ropes, eluded the Union troop, and escaped home. This in reality is absolutely impossible. The bridge (a solid structure, with no escape route available) allows the reader to maintain a sense of reality while still being able to grasp Fahrquars' illusion. Secondly, the bridge is the symbolic connection between life and death. Most people view death as a crossing over and beyond death is a "better life".
