The construction manual for all the furniture designed for Quercia*LAB by the students of Sheffield University, who in 2016 took part in the Community Economies live project.
This handbook provides assembly drawings of designs created specifically for Quercia*LAB, a communal workshop in Rovereto, a small town in the north of Italy. The construction of these
designs marked the start of what will be an active space that encourages “Community Economies” between resident asylum seekers, the wider community of Rovereto and ultimately, translocalities.
2. and under supervision. Luckily, during the first week of
construction in Quercia*LAB there were no injuries due to
the fact that only individuals with previous experience with
woodworking machinery would use these tools whilst teaching
and supervising others.
With a couple of adaptations, we were able to use some of the
designs in the existing ‘Open Design Manual: Social Furniture’
and therefore, we would like to highlight the effectiveness of
this handbook in helping us in our project. We would like this
manual to be a continuation of their work in creating ‘catalysts
in collective, sustainable, and alternative fields of action’.

show us your designs!

trian Pavilion, 2016)
Before starting..
This construction handbook is inspired by ‘Open Design Manual:
Social Furniture’ by EOOS, and it is to be used by those who
desire to ‘create collective spaces of action with functional
and well-designed furniture but have little money or specialist
knowledge in furniture construction’.
This handbook provides assembly drawings of designs created
specifically for Quercia*LAB, a communal workshop in Rovereto,
a small town in the north of Italy. The construction of these
designs marked the start of what will be an active space that
encourages “Community Economies” between resident asylum
seekers, the wider community of Rovereto and ultimately, trans-
localities.
This project came about due to the ‘spatial and qualitative
deficits’ in the community of asylum seekers, that makes it
difficult for them to integrate in the wider community. These
people exist in a constant state of emergency which means
they are constantly moved from one place to another. Therefore,
there was a need for a framework that allows them to gain
something from their stay as well as contribute to the space
before they leave.
QuerciaLAB, an 200sqm abandoned warehouse close to where
the asylum seekers were staying, presented itself as a possible
space to create new forms of common welfare work in the form
of workshops and activity spaces. Within this manual are the
instructions to build everything that has been designed for
Quercia*LAB as well some possible future additions to the
space.
The purpose of this manual is to facilitate the continuation of
work within Quercia*LAB, in order create a suitable space to
foster the creation of Community Economies.
The designs shown within the manual were conceived based on
an aspiration to encourage skill and knowledge sharing between
the residents of the Quercia Hotel and the wider community of
the town. There were key activities that were to happen within
the space which matched specific skills that users had.
Within this manual there are the instructions on how to
build flexible interfaces that cater to these skills, such as
hairdressers, cooking, tailoring and bike repair. We also
designed a movable enclosed space to be placed within the
warehouse that would provide protection from the cold and a
place for these interfaces to move into if need be.
All of the projects within this manual have been designed to
be built from wood. This would facilitate future alterations and
reuse of the material, therefore, providing a low-cost solution
to the user. The assembly of these designs are also intended
to be constructed by people with no construction background,
as this was the situation we found ourselves at Quercia*LAB.
Alterations can be done in order to fit other communities.
We aspire to reach beyond this Italian town and share this
knowledge with all those who are in need of such a manual.
We would like to warn you that the liability for safety is also
your own. Always work using appropriate safety protection
