Write An Essay On The Arctic Region
Arctic
The Arctic region has a very harsh climate with very short cool summers; while the most northerly
locations experience an extremely cold winter that lasts almost ten months.
This climate region has an annual precipitation of 35–50 cm each year.
Precipitation is low because the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water are frozen for most of the
year, and there is very little evaporation. This region includes most of Nunavut as well as northern
parts of the Northwest Territories and Quebec.
Pacific Maritime
The Pacific Maritime region lies along British Columbia's west coast and its border with the Yukon
Territory on the way to Alaska. The Pacific Ocean provides a moderating effect to this maritime
climate, which means the summers are cool and the winters are mild. Precipitation along the coast is
very high, with some area receiving as much as 300o mm of rain in the north. Many people live here

Prairie
Includes the southern regions of the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
Winters are very cold, and summers are very hot, this climate region has a wide temperature range
from summer to winter.
In winter, there is dry arctic air that makes the temperature well below freezing, and in summer, the
air is warm and dry. It is quite dry in this region because of the fact that not a lot of precipitation
occurs. Most of the rainfall happens in the spring and summer, and there is barely any precipitation
in winter.
Southeastern
This region includes Ontario and Quebec also parts of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. (Home to
Canada's major urban centres.) Moderately cold winters and warm summers.
This region experiences rainfall year–round. The Great Lakes moderate the temperatures somewhat,
cooling the summer and warming up early winter.

The Role Of Therapeutic Recreation In Newfoundland
The past two days, I have been truly privileged to attend the 2017 Newfoundland & Labrador
Therapeutic Recreation Association Conference. The conference consisted of sessions delivered by
those in the field of Therapeutic Recreation and related areas in Newfoundland and Labrador. I was
able to attend many sessions involving topics like inclusion, mental health and empowerment, and
through which, attained many new skills and perspectives for my future in therapeutic recreation.
Before this conference, I did not have a solid idea as to what therapeutic recreation truly looked like
in Newfoundland. However, through involvement in sessions, and interaction with other delegates
and therapeutic recreation professionals, I was able to broaden my ... Show more content on

As well, instead of focusing small problems, to look at the big picture of what is therapeutic
recreation in Newfoundland, and what is best for the entire profession. One of the sessions I was
lucky enough to attend was Chelsea Hicks' opening keynote: "Growing Through Stigma". I found
this session very empowering and I found myself connecting to Chelsea and becoming emotionally
involved with her story within the first few minutes of her session. It was this presentation that
defined was this conference meant to me, and what I was going to try and get from it. On March 7
of this year, at 9 o'clock in the night, I received a call from my mother, telling me that my own
childhood friend, Chelsea, had committed suicide. Since that day, I have found myself in the same
foxhole that Chelsea Hicks' described that she found herself in after her mother's passing. I am still
learning how to cope with what happened in March, and the sessions throughout this conference
have provided me with the skills to not only cope with my own trauma and depression, but also,
how to support those who may be suffering currently. Due to my own experiences with struggling
with learning how to manage and communicate my struggle confidently with others, I found myself
wanting to ask Chelsea Hicks if she could go back in time and give advice to her own father on how
to deal with her depression, what would she say to him?

Rhetorical Analysis of The Day I Became A Canadian by Al Pittman
Cori Bensted
When change is thrust upon us, it can change people with it, but when it does, it's important to
remember where you're from. The importance of this essay is it depicts a time in history when
change occurred to a people who, willing or not, did not see the coming effect it would have. This
will cover Al Pittman's, The Day I Became A Canadian, and his point of view on how changing
nationalities belittled his country. This will also examine how his writing, being rhetorical elements
like sentence structure and diction, enhances his writing, bringing out more emotion in the reader.

Also using more declarative sentences to imply a sense of amazement and wonder at his experience
of becoming a Canadian. "Other people had other considerations, no doubt, but to me it was a
miracle of time and space." Further on, Pittman clearly shows his chronological change with "Today,
30 years later..." and changing his writing style. Sentences become longer with more compound and
complex structure. Giving the information and pulling the reader into giving more thought. "Since
then I've learned that my childhood notions about Canada were no more uniformed that the notions
of a lot of Newfoundland adults had at the time." Words also become more polysyllabic, again
giving the impression of a more mature speaker. Having travelled a lot myself, and lived in many
provinces, one of those being in the east, I understand what Pittman is saying about being a
Newfoundlander first. Upon my travel east, I meet some of the nicest people in my life. However, as
friendly as they are, if you are not from there it's hard to be accepted and trusted. The more I got to
know people, and understand how much life was different there, they trusted me more. This much
more so with more mature generations. As much as they are Canadian, they see themselves in their
own little world. This being said, the same could be said for Toronto, Ontario. Having lived there as
well, I found it very easy to be accepted in such a large place with so

The Supreme Court Of Canada
The Supreme Court is one of the most influential ways in determining whether something is
considered to be "constitutional" in many developed countries around the world, including Canada.
Within this country, the Supreme Court is the highest Court of Appeal that both territories and
provinces can bring court cases to, making it extremely important in the way the country functions
(The Supreme Court of Canada, 2016). Within this country, the way the judges are chosen is
something that has recently come into consideration under the Trudeau government. The way the
Supreme Court is decided could change not only the way decisions are made, but could impact the
country overall. Since this is the case, the Prime Minister should be able to determine who the
members of the Supreme Court are with help from a committee, so long as all regions of the country
are represented and a mandatory retirement age is met. The Supreme Court of Canada did not have
an easy time at first. The first constitutional decision made by the court transpired in the year 1877,
but was then almost abolished when other laws were put in place depriving the high court of power
over provinces, but was eventually granted the power before the Great Depression in the late 1920s
(Roach, 2001). Ever since this, for one–hundred and forty one years, the Supreme Court of Canada
has been functioning in the same way as it had up until recently, when current Prime Minister, Justin
Trudeau, decided to do something

Demographic Issues Affecting Newfoundland And Labrador
The most significant demographic issue affecting Newfoundland and Labrador is an aging
population. Being in stage 4 of the Demographic Transition Model (DTM), the elderly population
outweighs the economically active population, putting a lot of stress on them to work for the
economically inactive population. In 2011 the median age of the population was 44 years old.
(StatCan, 2015). This is concerningly near the economically inactive population. In addition, the
youth populations are also very low, reducing the recovery time from the problems associated with
an aging population.
Newfoundland and Labrador's economy is natural resourced based. The majority of the workforce
works in the primary or secondary industry. These industries, specifically the primary industry are
very labor intensive and rely on manpower for production. With an aging population, the reliance on
manpower results in a decrease in the amount of people able to work in the primary industry. The
second issue facing Newfoundland and Labrador is that jobs in the primary and secondary industry
do not pay a large income. In 2015, the median income in Newfoundland and Labrador was $31,540
(StatCan, 2017). This demonstrates how the stress put on the economically active to hold up the
population is even harder when taking their wages into account. ... Show more content on

Additionally, immigrants view Canada the same way. Immigrants coming to Canada will not want to

Just as Newfoundlanders have to confront the sea, survive it, so people have to face life's traumas
and find the will to go on.
To what extent is Proulx saying people must 'weather the storms' of life and reconcile the past with
the future?
To face life's storms is not to reconcile the past with the future, meaning to be happy with it, but to
confront the past, conquer it, and then accept it. Acceptance in this instance, meaning to
acknowledge the past, and acknowledge that it cannot be changed. It does not need to be
understood, simply recognised as something that has happened. In acceptance, feelings of anger,
regret and guilt are dissipated. These are the steps that are to be taken in order to cope, "weather ...

Rhetorical Devices Used In Fogo Island
The Use of Rhetorical Appeals in HAND.LINE.COD. Filmmaker Justin Simm's short film,
HAND.LINE.COD. takes place in Eastern Canada. The short film takes a closer look at the 500–
year–old traditional hand fishing method used by the locals. HAND.LINE.COD. appeals to many
rhetorical techniques including pathos, ethos, and logos with the film taking place in ruggedly
beautiful Newfoundland, the local fishers go on about their daily lives using their intricate ways of
catching one fish at a time using only their hands and a line. This film is highly effective in its use of
pathos to create an emotional connection with the audience while using ethos and logos to reinforce
and build the credibility of the film. Centuries of fishing in Fogo island ... Show more content on

Environmental Concerns In Newfoundland And Labrador
As any other places in the world, there are many environmental concerns slowly increasing and
becoming more drastic day by day. These arising issues are the consequences of pollution and global
warming that are now affecting our own communities. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the most
prevalent concern is pollution, specifically water pollution. Due to poor sewer and waste
management systems, conditions became incredibly bad to the point where water had to be boiled to
be pure enough for drinking. Thankfully, now that there are new laws and regulations, the condition
has gotten better, but continues to remain a threat to the environment. Another concern being faced
is the collapse of the east coast fishery, specifically the cod fishery. Due

Market Segmentation In Canada
(B) We used a combination of three market segmentation variables using two different approaches.
We chose these variables because we feel that they are the best choices for differentiating between
market segments. The first thing we did was use the Geographic approach to limit our scope. Using
the Regional variable to divide Canada into provinces, we decided to limit our market to that of
Newfoundland and Labrador; as a new start–up, it makes sense to begin small with a familiar
market with the potential for growth. Then, using Market Density, we determined that since almost
40% of Newfoundland and Labrador's population lives in St. John's (196,965 out of 514,540), we
would limit our market to that of the Avalon Peninsula, with potential for ... Show more content on

Essay about Seal Hunting in Atlantic Canada
The annual hunt of harp seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus) in Atlantic Canada is contested at the start
of nearly every season, with celebrities, politicians, and the public actively weighing in on the
matter. Within all of the dialogue and debate, there can be a lot of bias and misrepresentation of facts
advocating for or against the seal hunt. Thus, the true sustainable aspects of the industry are
drowned out and lost due to the sheer amount of controversy surrounding the issue. Sustainability
entails meeting the needs of today without sacrificing the needs of the future ("Sustainable
Development" 1). The concept of sustainable resource development involves support pillars that

Contemporary dishes like seal flipper pie have also contributed to the cultural identity of
Newfoundland society. As a result of these strong cultural ties, commercial and subsistence sealing
continues to exist through legal policy by demand from both government and society. The policies
that govern seal hunting are based on a sustained yield principle that does not compromise the
harvest for future generations, and are thus in accordance with sustainable aspects of resource
development. Economic benefits gained from the seal hunt include an increase in trading
relationships for Canada and the stimulation of the provincial economy of Newfoundland and
Labrador. As reported by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the total landed value of the seal
harvest for 2006 was $34.3 million dollars ("Market" 1). This figure represents a historic high, when
market prices per pelt were favourable. Regardless, the money brought in from seal hunting is said
to have a "trickle–down" effect on other sectors of the economy ("Market" 1). Canada has
historically been the leading exporter of seal products in the global marketplace, and had exported
over $70 million in product between 2005 and 2011 ("Market" 1) Nationally, the seal hunt has
enabled Canada to forge new trading relationships in the international community, as evidenced by a

Thesis Statement Of Overfishing In Canada
INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH
Introductory Remarks: (Write 1–2 sentences introducing your topic)
The world as it was known in the past, is not the world known as today. People do not realize the
impacts that overfishing could cause in Canada.
Outline of Your Arguments:
1. Overfishing affects the economy in Canada.
2.Overfishing in Canada could cause major disruptions to the environment.
Thesis:
It is strongly believed that overfishing could cause economical and environmental impacts in
Canada.
FIRST PERSUASIVE PARAGRAPH
Topic Sentence: It is highly understood that Canada's economy is affected by overfishing.
Proof: #1
On 2nd of July, 1992, the Canadian government imposed a moratorium on the Northern cod fishery
along the country's east coast. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But overfishing – combined with a loss of habitat and the construction of dams in tributaries, which
prevented spawning – has nearly exterminated the species, leading non–profit and government

CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH
Summary/Significance of Arguments
The result of the fact that approximately 30,000 people out of work in the fishing industry of
NewFoundLand and Labrador clearly illustrates that overfishing affects the economy in Canada.
Finally, the evidence of salmon stocks in British Columbia that were constantly killed in commercial
and recreational fisheries proves that overfishing in Canada could cause major disruptions to the
environment.
Restate Thesis: (in different wording)
Given these imperative points, evidences of environmental disruptions and economical impacts in
Canada proves that it is caused by overfishing.
Closing Remarks (in 1–2 sentences)
The world of today is very different from the world of yesterday. Overfishing affects the economy
and could cause major disruptions to the environment of Canada. However, people can ponder about
the importance of the impacts that overfishing could cause in

Moratorium Research Paper
In 1497, John Cabot reported schools of cod so thick that they slowed down the ship off the coast of
Newfoundland.[] This would set the way of life and be the income of at least 30,000 people in
Newfoundland until 1992.[][] The moratorium was right to be put in place on the cod fishery. The
loss of cod as a species will lead to more than just cultural and economic losses. The culture and lost
of jobs was inevitable, so, the life of the species should have been saved for the better outcome.
Without the moratorium, the cod population would have gone extinct and led to several losses.
Despite the moratorium, the cod species is still considered as endangered in 2012. However, the
trend of cod population has started to finally return after 20 years ... Show more content on

The ability to maintain the population of cod was unlikely without the moratorium as new
technology like trawl fishing or dragnet fishing increased harvest as well as the inclusion of
international boats.[] If the cod industry were to continue without the moratorium, there would be a
quick decline in harvests and eventually none at all. Consequently, the same lost in the way of life as
the moratorium had done would happen. The same can be said about the loss of jobs except it would
be worse since there may have been no help from the government at all. The government gave $225
per week after the initial two weeks for ten weeks and access to training for new jobs.[] Albeit this
not being enough, it was better than having no help at all. If there was no moratorium, there was no
guarantee for help from the government. Moreover, the government strengthened their economy
after with a larger income from snow crabs and shrimp.[] After the moratorium, the government also
diversified the economy from more than just fishing and improved sections such as tourism.[] A
diverse economy is more stable and less vulnerable to collapsing since it is not completely reliant in
one sector. This means that if an economic issue happens, then there will not be damage to the

lack of employments or unequal opportunities, this is more in the case of families than other

to lack of education for the younger ones (children). A lot of reasons can cause family poverty,
including under–employment and Unemployment. Some may inherit poverty because they are born

Social Challenges In Social Work
The resilience and determination of people through adverse conditions has been a driving force in
the reasons I choose this profession, and why I continue to choose it every day. In particular, family
challenges have been an interest of mine, and I have always been captivated in understanding the
social layers which affect their lives.
My family has undergone adverse circumstances, which has resulted in intergenerational trauma.
My sister had three children who were removed from her care and placed for closed adoption, as a
result of her ongoing mental health challenges. When my first nephew was born, I re–experienced
significant traumatic childhood events; he was placed into protective care. I was not aware of the

family member. At the time I was the only family member able to have visitation with him, thus
stepping into a maternal role. His birth and eventual adoption was a turning point in my life. It
forced me into a position where I had to become completely estranged from my biological family.
At that moment, I decided I needed to be a part of changing the social injustices I experienced and
witnessed through obtaining a bachelor of social work.
I grew up in a home environment that did not value education, and in which I entered various social

intelligence and good temperament would make him the world's finest retriever. In America people
were using the Chesapeake Bay retriever to hunt waterfowl. But after hearing of the success that
people had with the Labrador the upper–class society started to import them to America. People
were having so much success with Labradors as a hunting dog, it became in popular demand. The
Labradors have a thick undercoat and a water resistant top coat to keep the Labrador warm in the

The Importance Of Free Speech In Canada
This story takes place in an alternate universe. Canada had free speech despite the fact that there
were more restrictions on free speech than ever before. For example, criticising the actions of
individual Feminists, women, or Muslims was considered hate speech. Also, criticising the
government was considered treason. However, every year between March 21st at 7:00pm and March
22nd at 7:00am, people were allowed to say whatever they want and even protest without the fear of
imprisonment. It was an annual event called The Catharsis. In the province of Newfoundland and
Labrador, those who've earned $30,000 annually or less had to pay 48% of their income in taxes.
The more money you've earned, the less taxes people had to pay. The price of food was so expensive
that $200 worth a food for one person would only last about a week unless that person rationed their
food. As a result, the citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador started to grow their own food to save
money. But eventually people needed permits to grow their own food. However, the government

Environmental Concerns And Climate Change
Proposed Research
Environmental concerns and climate change are influencing and shaping the future of the power
industry. As a result, the electricity required to meet the growing demand is mainly generated from
renewable energy resources, and this trend is expected to continue in the next decades [1]. Hydro
and wind are major renewable energy resources and are free of greenhouse gas emissions [2]. This
makes them valuable environmentally sustainable and economic resources for power generation
around the world. A hydro–wind hybrid power system is an excellent combination for improved
reliability, where the resources abound [3]. In Newfoundland and Labrador, there is enormous
potential for hydro and wind renewable energy resources, with ... Show more content on

This condition imposes unique challenges on the planning and operation of a hydro–wind integrated
power system in a reliable manner [8]. Previous studies on wind penetration issues and solutions
found that the limiting factors of wind integration include penetration level, forecasting reliability,
geographic diversity, hydro generation flexibility and control of the overall system [6]. Control is a
key enabling factor for the deployment of renewable energy systems [9]. Control techniques such as
linear and dynamic programming, genetic algorithms, and neural networks, proposed by past
research, for the control and economic dispatch of renewable energy systems, have not been
acknowledged to be error free [3]. Two major flaws identified in existing techniques include the lack
of ease–of–use, and adaptability to new situations and evolving regulations [3]. These flaws pose
major operational challenges to utilities and thus, make control technologies optimization an
imperative research endeavor.
In 1998, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Policy 1 – Generation Control

creatures who would drown sailors. Then Disney got ahold of Ariel and mermaids became kid
friendly. Next, Starbucks made one their logo, and over the past couple of years women have started
knitted themselves tail blankets or taking mermaid swimming lessons. Men have pretty much stayed
out of the mermaid realm, until now.
Introducing the Merb'ys

Spirit Horse NL is a program that helps people with mental health issues using horses. Dogs are
much more common therapy animals than horses, but horses are also incredibly intelligent. Each
person in the program learns life skills by learning how to take care of a horse, and receives the
companionship of a horse to help with the mental health issues. The program is very expensive
because taking care of a horse is pricey. The Merb'ys hope that their calendar will help raise
awareness and money for the program.

Why the name Merb'ys?
Newfoundland is an island that you can only access by boat or by plane. Since Newfoundland has
always been a little isolated, Newfoundlanders have a very distinct accent that borders on
Scottish/Irish sounding. With the Newfie accent mermaids ended up sounding like merb'ys, and
that's what the guys decided to name the calendar.

Essay On Budget Decision
Newfoundland and Labrador Budget Decision: Implications on the Determinants of Health In April
2016, the Newfoundland and Labrador government announced a provincial budget, an economic
plan that proposed to allow Newfoundland and Labrador to regain control of government finances
(Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, 2016a). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the
impact that a specific budget decision has on the determinants of health of the residents of
Newfoundland and Labrador. This paper will specifically discuss the budget decision to eliminate
twenty–four hour snow clearing in Newfoundland and Labrador. In particular, it will discuss the

The elimination of twenty–four hour snow clearing services on the Trans Canada Highway impacts
the determinants of health of Newfoundland and Labrador residents. For the purposes of this paper,
the impact that the elimination of twenty–four hour snow clearing services has on the community of
Little Rapids will be discussed. Little Rapids is located just off the Trans–Canada Highway,
approximately 23.2 kilometres from Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook (Google
Maps, 2017). Three specific determinants of health that are affected because of this budget cut
include: the physical environment, access to health services, and income and social status.
According to the World Health Organization (2017), the physical environment is a determinant of
health; it includes safe water and fresh air, healthy workplaces, safe accommodations,
neighbourhoods, and roads. The removal of twenty–four hour snow clearing services can result in
dangerous road conditions during the late night and early morning hours (Government of
Newfoundland and Labrador, 2010). According to Petten (as cited in MacLean, 2016), many people
take part in activities after 9:30 P.M. and will have to travel over unplowed, snow–covered highways
risking an accident and their lives. Newfoundland and Labrador

Selective Breeding of a Laborador Retriever Essay
Selective breeding
A breed is a particular set of domestic animals or plants having uniform look and behavior, that
differentiate it from other animals or plant. While as Domestication is the process whereby a
population of living organisms is changed at the genetic level, through generations of selective
breeding, to accentuate traits that ultimately benefit humans. The deliberate breeding of animals and
other species to get required features by human beings is called selective breeding. It includes
breeding methods such as inbreeding, line breeding etc. The animals that are produced are tamed,

Although Lab's tend to have great temperaments for being around a family home and children,
special attention should be paid to how the puppy's parents behave. Behavior characters can be

set and strong legs enable the Labrador retriever to powerfully swim and run – and frequent exercise

Some of the people who try to breed these animals do not know the proper methods, and can end up
hurting that dog and its puppies. Labradors are said to mature slowly and therefore it takes some
time for them to be able to breed. A female Labrador is usually bred after their second or third
season in heat, which is when they are around 2 years old. It is best to wait for a female to mature
because otherwise it puts a lot of physical and mental strain on the mother carrying the pups. With a
male Labrador there is less to worry about, as there is not much strain on them when mating.

Canadas Shame Essay
The infamous Harp (whitecoat) and Hooded (blueback) seal hunt photos have virtually disappeared
from newspapers or television news. That does not mean that seal hunting in Canada has stopped.
The mass killing of seals off Canada’s East Coast is commercial, cruel, and wasteful,
yet despite furious outcry from Animal Rights activists the government is refusing to take notice.
The cruelty of this extensive killing operation, which starts during the seals’ birthing
season, has been denounced for years as “Canada’s Shame.';
The senseless slaughter of seals springs from the profit they bring, the use of their pelts for coats,
and other products. It has been proven though, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The big commercially owned boats on the other hand have an entirely different method of killing.
Seal pups are gathered up individually and incased in netting – somewhat like a bag of
oranges. Dozens of baby seals in net bags are packed into wire cages and moved by helicopters to
fur farms. After the pups molt, they are killed. Catching seals in nets unavoidably causes a slow and
painful death for these beautiful mammals.
Seals are mammals, warm blooded like the rest of us. There is nothing in place to protect them
because under Canadian law, these mammals are legally considered to be fish! Perhaps that is why
our government thinks so little about slaughtering these animals. Perhaps that is why the quotas
have been set so high and why both the Government of Canada and the Government of
Newfoundland are now providing subsidies to entice more fishermen and sport hunters to kill seals.
The Government of Canada is gambling that the public has forgotten about the cruel and bloody
images of the Canadian seal hunt prior to 1984. The truth is, nothing has changed
“…about 220 000 seal pups were killed in 1997 alone.'; And this statistic
does not even take into account the thousands of mature seals being killed; it’s merely
the estimated number of seal pups being massacred.
Consequently the Canadian commercial seal

Why The Economy Of Newfoundland Is Failing
The economy of Newfoundland is failing. We are all grown, responsible adults, and it's time we
acknowledged it. Since the 1960s, Newfoundland has dealt with economic hardship because of
declining fish stocks and varying world demand for many of our products. Fishing, pulp and paper
manufacturing, and iron ore mining remain major activities. Though they bring in some money, they
generally do not provide sufficient jobs or income to relieve us of our widespread poverty and a high
rate of unemployment.
The economy of Newfoundland and Labrador is heavily dependent on natural resources. That's no
secret. Though, our resources are slowly swimming away. Quite literally. Fish are swimming away
and northwards. And that's our concern! As the worker's

Sustainability Of Human Want : Atlantic Seals
Sustainability of Human Want Atlantic seals are hunted and killed humanely and inhumanely every
day in Canada. The issue has caused a plethora of controversy in the international community;
depicting if seal hunting should cease or continue. In Glavin 's An Enviro 's Case for Seal Hunt he
supports the murder of seals; however, he only supports it for human consumption, but not the sport.
Glavin 's tone of writing is very biased and his argument is all sorts of information pulled together
that do not relate; all of his supporting arguments are far – fetched and do not correspond. Glavin
poorly supports his position due to the fact that, he does not connect his information to his argument
and he uses four of the ten common logical fallacies; such as red herring, false analogy,
confirmation bias, and 'it doesn 't follow '. Glavin uses a fallacy of irrelevance to the hunting of seals
attempting to distract the reader with colossal names. Glavin starts one of the paragraphs with listing
off a bunch of organizations without explaining their significance. Using massive names it gives the
illusion that Glavin has people agreeing with his statement. Whereas, his list only appeals to
authority and he never connects this list to his argument or gives the source of this information.
Glavin argues the point of sustainability; one, his view of sustainability is the 'right of humans '. In
other words, human rights prevail over the rights of animals. and two, Glavin gives a poor

Essay on Choosing the Best Dog Breed for Your Family
For millions of years dogs have remained a constant companion of man. Bred from the aggressive

The Newfoundland is categorized as a large breed of dog in the AKC Working Group. "Newfs" can
range between 22 to 28 inches tall from the shoulder and normally weigh 100 to 150 pounds. Their
coat coloring can be either solid or landseer and come in Grays, Browns, or Black, or a White base
coat with Black markings. The history of the breed is thought to originate from a Canadian island
for which the Newfoundland is named. Used as a workhorse and fishing aid, the Newfoundland's
job was to pull angler nets to shore, haul wood from the forests, and power blacksmith's bellows
(American Kennel Club). The temperament of the dog is best described by its nickname, "The
Gentle Giant" patience, intelligence, and docile manners, make him an ideal family dog.
Newfoundland's require daily exercise and should be brushed regularly to maintain their beautiful
coat. Fourth on the list of top dogs, The Pug, is well described by the phrase "multum in parvo"
which means "a lot of dog in a small space" (American Kennel Club). Categorized as a small breed
in the AKC Toy group, the Pug normally gets 11 to 14 inches tall from the shoulders and weighs 14
to 18 pounds. The Pug is known for its "mask" around the mussel and the color of the coat can be
either Black or Fawn. The history of this particular breed of dog originates from Asia where they
were used mainly as companion dogs to Buddhist monks. AKC states that the breeding purpose of
Pugs was mainly for companionship and

The Rise Of The Fishing Industry
Before the rise of the fishing industry in the 1950's Newfoundland and Labrador struggled with an
unstable economy and many citizens found themselves living in poverty. Initially on shore methods
had minimal impact on the environment and fish population, as in–shore fishermen followed a strict
season and fished only during the summer leaving the population to migrate in the fall. As
technology advanced steam boats made off shore fishing possible, this allowed draggers to fish in
massive quantities regardless of the season. At first this was very promising to the Canadian
government and the Fishery Products International Company (FPI) as they saw huge profits, and the
opportunity to create jobs for fisherman and factory workers alike. However, with continued
offshore fishing the inshore fisherman saw significant depletion in the fish population, specifically
cod. It took far too long for the government to realize the severity of the issue and when they did it
was too late. In 1992 the government announced a complete ban of cod fishing. This resulted in the
loss of 19000 jobs, and all profit coming from this industry throwing many small fishing towns in
Newfoundland back into poverty.
All stakeholders felt the effects of the ban; the External Stakeholders FPI explains why they
supplied the boats to major corporations and over exaggerated the cod population and Internal
Stakeholders consisted of the independent fishermen and their families and how they were affected.

Comparing The Code Of Conduct In The Newfoundland And...
In most professions, there is an expected degree of professionalism that must be met. Teachers are
not excluded from this and are held to a standard. An attempt has been made to define expectations
and regulate appropriate interactions for teachers. These are written in the Newfoundland and
Labrador Teachers' Association's Code of Ethics (2013). This code applies to all members of the
Newfoundland and Labradors' Teacher Association, and the members are expected to be aware of
the guide and adhere to it (2013).
Teachers are very visible members of society and often find themselves under scrutiny. (Neumark,
2014). An individual entering the teaching profession should do so with a degree of professionalism
and respect in which to regulate their own behaviour. However, there will always be times when
circumstance tests teachers' professionalism. This is when the code of ethics should be regarded.
This code offers guidance on how to have effective and professional interactions with students, other
teachers, and parents. It also offers guidelines on professional growth and organization. The code is
not a comprehensive list of all expected practice but serves as a guide rather than a set of very
specific rules (2013). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the very least, it would be comforting to know you have the support of your own colleagues.
Students can and will complain about other teachers to a favoured one. This should be dealt with in
the most professional way possible. The code references this specifically stating that "A teacher does
not criticize the professional competence or professional reputation of a colleague" (2013). This is
of course important as doing otherwise would make for a very uncomfortable environment for both
teachers involved and the students. Undermining another teacher for your own gain should never

as being in the class of sporting dogs, one that is generally used to hunt upland game birds and
waterfowl. Well known for their gentle and loving behaviour and all the information on Labrador
Retrievers will reiterate the fact that they are a wonderfully calm dog.
Legend has it that Labrador has actually been around for numerous years and commenced their life

They were being mainly used as gun dogs in the war. Gun dogs are a category of dog breeds that are
used to assist hunters to find and retrieve game, and the Labrador Retrievers were especially useful
for this because they are born with a natural knack for retrieving.
There are 2 genes in Labrador Retrievers that decide the dog's colouring. The first gene determines
the real colour, yellow, black or brown; the second gene is in charge of the pigmentation of the
actual colouring of the dog's coat. It determines whether the Labrador Retriever should be light
yellow or a rich dark brown colour.
Yellow, Black and chocolate are not the only colors of Labrador retriever. Silver Labradors are
chocolate Labs with a dilution gene that makes their coat to be lighter in color. Yellow and Black
labs may also have these dilution genes, except the difference in their coat color isn't as remarkable
as it is with the chocolate. Although, the idea of silver Labs is still controversial among breeders, as
no kennel clubs recognize it as an acceptable color. Still, some breeders passionately advocate for
silver Labs to be recognized and allowed to compete in

Canada's Energy Sector
Canada's energy sector is probably one of the most important to Canada, and possibly the most
important to the world. In 1846, Abraham Gesner produced kerosene from coal in Nova Scotia. He
was the first man of his time to do this in Canada. In 1870, the government of the United Kingdom
handed over control of the land used by the Hudson Bay Company to Canada. Canadian's did not
realize that the land they had been given, mainly Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba was
extremely rich in minerals, mostly fossil fuels. Canada is a major player in energy imports and
exports. Canada produces 6% of the worlds energy. In fact, only Saudi Arabia, USA, Russia and
China produce more energy than Canada. Canada produces 33% of the worlds Uranium, and 13% of
the worlds hydro–electricity, making it the largest producer of these two forms of energy in the
world. Canada is also a major supplier of coal, petroleum and natural gas. Alberta is the home of
most of Canada's oil and coal fields.
Canada has remote oil and gas facilities off the coast of Eastern Canada, "Newfoundland and
Labrador became a significant producer of oil in 1997 with the opening of the Hibernia offshore oil

The Harsh Climate and Short Summers of the Arctic Region

  • 1. Write An Essay On The Arctic Region Arctic The Arctic region has a very harsh climate with very short cool summers; while the most northerly locations experience an extremely cold winter that lasts almost ten months. This climate region has an annual precipitation of 35–50 cm each year. Precipitation is low because the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water are frozen for most of the year, and there is very little evaporation. This region includes most of Nunavut as well as northern parts of the Northwest Territories and Quebec. Pacific Maritime The Pacific Maritime region lies along British Columbia's west coast and its border with the Yukon Territory on the way to Alaska. The Pacific Ocean provides a moderating effect to this maritime climate, which means the summers are cool and the winters are mild. Precipitation along the coast is very high, with some area receiving as much as 300o mm of rain in the north. Many people live here because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here, winters are cold, and summers are warm. Prairie Includes the southern regions of the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Winters are very cold, and summers are very hot, this climate region has a wide temperature range from summer to winter. In winter, there is dry arctic air that makes the temperature well below freezing, and in summer, the air is warm and dry. It is quite dry in this region because of the fact that not a lot of precipitation occurs. Most of the rainfall happens in the spring and summer, and there is barely any precipitation in winter. Southeastern This region includes Ontario and Quebec also parts of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. (Home to Canada's major urban centres.) Moderately cold winters and warm summers. This region experiences rainfall year–round. The Great Lakes moderate the temperatures somewhat, cooling the summer and warming up early winter. Atlantic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Role Of Therapeutic Recreation In Newfoundland The past two days, I have been truly privileged to attend the 2017 Newfoundland & Labrador Therapeutic Recreation Association Conference. The conference consisted of sessions delivered by those in the field of Therapeutic Recreation and related areas in Newfoundland and Labrador. I was able to attend many sessions involving topics like inclusion, mental health and empowerment, and through which, attained many new skills and perspectives for my future in therapeutic recreation. Before this conference, I did not have a solid idea as to what therapeutic recreation truly looked like in Newfoundland. However, through involvement in sessions, and interaction with other delegates and therapeutic recreation professionals, I was able to broaden my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As well, instead of focusing small problems, to look at the big picture of what is therapeutic recreation in Newfoundland, and what is best for the entire profession. One of the sessions I was lucky enough to attend was Chelsea Hicks' opening keynote: "Growing Through Stigma". I found this session very empowering and I found myself connecting to Chelsea and becoming emotionally involved with her story within the first few minutes of her session. It was this presentation that defined was this conference meant to me, and what I was going to try and get from it. On March 7 of this year, at 9 o'clock in the night, I received a call from my mother, telling me that my own childhood friend, Chelsea, had committed suicide. Since that day, I have found myself in the same foxhole that Chelsea Hicks' described that she found herself in after her mother's passing. I am still learning how to cope with what happened in March, and the sessions throughout this conference have provided me with the skills to not only cope with my own trauma and depression, but also, how to support those who may be suffering currently. Due to my own experiences with struggling with learning how to manage and communicate my struggle confidently with others, I found myself wanting to ask Chelsea Hicks if she could go back in time and give advice to her own father on how to deal with her depression, what would she say to him? ... Rhetorical Analysis of The Day I Became A Canadian by Al Pittman Cori Bensted When change is thrust upon us, it can change people with it, but when it does, it's important to remember where you're from. The importance of this essay is it depicts a time in history when change occurred to a people who, willing or not, did not see the coming effect it would have. This will cover Al Pittman's, The Day I Became A Canadian, and his point of view on how changing nationalities belittled his country. This will also examine how his writing, being rhetorical elements like sentence structure and diction, enhances his writing, bringing out more emotion in the reader. The Day I Became A Canadian is an essay of the day Al Pittman's nationality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also using more declarative sentences to imply a sense of amazement and wonder at his experience of becoming a Canadian. "Other people had other considerations, no doubt, but to me it was a miracle of time and space." Further on, Pittman clearly shows his chronological change with "Today, 30 years later..." and changing his writing style. Sentences become longer with more compound and complex structure. Giving the information and pulling the reader into giving more thought. "Since then I've learned that my childhood notions about Canada were no more uniformed that the notions of a lot of Newfoundland adults had at the time." Words also become more polysyllabic, again giving the impression of a more mature speaker. Having travelled a lot myself, and lived in many provinces, one of those being in the east, I understand what Pittman is saying about being a Newfoundlander first. Upon my travel east, I meet some of the nicest people in my life. However, as friendly as they are, if you are not from there it's hard to be accepted and trusted. The more I got to know people, and understand how much life was different there, they trusted me more. This much more so with more mature generations. As much as they are Canadian, they see themselves in their own little world. This being said, the same could be said for Toronto, Ontario. Having lived there as well, I found it very easy to be accepted in such a large place with so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Supreme Court Of Canada The Supreme Court is one of the most influential ways in determining whether something is considered to be "constitutional" in many developed countries around the world, including Canada. Within this country, the Supreme Court is the highest Court of Appeal that both territories and provinces can bring court cases to, making it extremely important in the way the country functions (The Supreme Court of Canada, 2016). Within this country, the way the judges are chosen is something that has recently come into consideration under the Trudeau government. The way the Supreme Court is decided could change not only the way decisions are made, but could impact the country overall. Since this is the case, the Prime Minister should be able to determine who the members of the Supreme Court are with help from a committee, so long as all regions of the country are represented and a mandatory retirement age is met. The Supreme Court of Canada did not have an easy time at first. The first constitutional decision made by the court transpired in the year 1877, but was then almost abolished when other laws were put in place depriving the high court of power over provinces, but was eventually granted the power before the Great Depression in the late 1920s (Roach, 2001). Ever since this, for one–hundred and forty one years, the Supreme Court of Canada has been functioning in the same way as it had up until recently, when current Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, decided to do something ... • 9. Demographic Issues Affecting Newfoundland And Labrador The most significant demographic issue affecting Newfoundland and Labrador is an aging population. Being in stage 4 of the Demographic Transition Model (DTM), the elderly population outweighs the economically active population, putting a lot of stress on them to work for the economically inactive population. In 2011 the median age of the population was 44 years old. (StatCan, 2015). This is concerningly near the economically inactive population. In addition, the youth populations are also very low, reducing the recovery time from the problems associated with an aging population. Newfoundland and Labrador's economy is natural resourced based. The majority of the workforce works in the primary or secondary industry. These industries, specifically the primary industry are very labor intensive and rely on manpower for production. With an aging population, the reliance on manpower results in a decrease in the amount of people able to work in the primary industry. The second issue facing Newfoundland and Labrador is that jobs in the primary and secondary industry do not pay a large income. In 2015, the median income in Newfoundland and Labrador was $31,540 (StatCan, 2017). This demonstrates how the stress put on the economically active to hold up the population is even harder when taking their wages into account. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 11. The Shipping News Essay examples The Shipping News Just as Newfoundlanders have to confront the sea, survive it, so people have to face life's traumas and find the will to go on. To what extent is Proulx saying people must 'weather the storms' of life and reconcile the past with the future? To face life's storms is not to reconcile the past with the future, meaning to be happy with it, but to confront the past, conquer it, and then accept it. Acceptance in this instance, meaning to acknowledge the past, and acknowledge that it cannot be changed. It does not need to be understood, simply recognised as something that has happened. In acceptance, feelings of anger, regret and guilt are dissipated. These are the steps that are to be taken in order to cope, "weather ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When she does so she is flooded with childhood memories, and whilst they still make her feel disheartened she is able to acknowledge that it happened, and that she cannot change that fact. She recognises that it has made her stronger. "She had worked her way off the rocks and shoals. Had managed. Still managed." (Pg 226) When she first comes across the pond and recalls the rape, she stands and looks at the pond, and thought it to be, "small, uninteresting. No reason to go down to it" (Pg 225.) When his parents commit suicide and Petal dies in a car crash after she runs away, Quoyle has no idea how to deal with what has happened, but when he moves to Newfoundland he learns how to deal with these things through the help of the people around him. When Quoyle first arrives in Newfoundland the memory of Petal continues to haunt him. The short film takes a closer look at the 500– year–old traditional hand fishing method used by the locals. HAND.LINE.COD. appeals to many rhetorical techniques including pathos, ethos, and logos with the film taking place in ruggedly beautiful Newfoundland, the local fishers go on about their daily lives using their intricate ways of catching one fish at a time using only their hands and a line. This film is highly effective in its use of pathos to create an emotional connection with the audience while using ethos and logos to reinforce and build the credibility of the film. Based on research by people such as Leonard Milich, he too writes about the collapse of the Northwest Atlantic cod fishery as shown in the film (Milich 2010). These arising issues are the consequences of pollution and global warming that are now affecting our own communities. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the most prevalent concern is pollution, specifically water pollution. Due to poor sewer and waste management systems, conditions became incredibly bad to the point where water had to be boiled to be pure enough for drinking. Thankfully, now that there are new laws and regulations, the condition has gotten better, but continues to remain a threat to the environment. • 17. Market Segmentation In Canada (B) We used a combination of three market segmentation variables using two different approaches. We chose these variables because we feel that they are the best choices for differentiating between market segments. The first thing we did was use the Geographic approach to limit our scope. Using the Regional variable to divide Canada into provinces, we decided to limit our market to that of Newfoundland and Labrador; as a new start–up, it makes sense to begin small with a familiar market with the potential for growth. Then, using Market Density, we determined that since almost 40% of Newfoundland and Labrador's population lives in St. John's (196,965 out of 514,540), we would limit our market to that of the Avalon Peninsula, with potential for ... Essay about Seal Hunting in Atlantic Canada The annual hunt of harp seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus) in Atlantic Canada is contested at the start of nearly every season, with celebrities, politicians, and the public actively weighing in on the matter. Within all of the dialogue and debate, there can be a lot of bias and misrepresentation of facts advocating for or against the seal hunt. Thus, the true sustainable aspects of the industry are drowned out and lost due to the sheer amount of controversy surrounding the issue. Sustainability entails meeting the needs of today without sacrificing the needs of the future ("Sustainable Development" 1). Contemporary dishes like seal flipper pie have also contributed to the cultural identity of Newfoundland society. As a result of these strong cultural ties, commercial and subsistence sealing continues to exist through legal policy by demand from both government and society. The policies that govern seal hunting are based on a sustained yield principle that does not compromise the harvest for future generations, and are thus in accordance with sustainable aspects of resource development. Economic benefits gained from the seal hunt include an increase in trading relationships for Canada and the stimulation of the provincial economy of Newfoundland and Labrador. As reported by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the total landed value of the seal harvest for 2006 was $34.3 million dollars ("Market" 1). This figure represents a historic high, when market prices per pelt were favourable. Regardless, the money brought in from seal hunting is said to have a "trickle–down" effect on other sectors of the economy ("Market" 1). Canada has historically been the leading exporter of seal products in the global marketplace, and had exported over $70 million in product between 2005 and 2011 ("Market" 1) Nationally, the seal hunt has enabled Canada to forge new trading relationships in the international community, as evidenced by a 2011 deal between Canada and China. Moratorium Research Paper In 1497, John Cabot reported schools of cod so thick that they slowed down the ship off the coast of Newfoundland.[] This would set the way of life and be the income of at least 30,000 people in Newfoundland until 1992.[][] The moratorium was right to be put in place on the cod fishery. The loss of cod as a species will lead to more than just cultural and economic losses. The culture and lost of jobs was inevitable, so, the life of the species should have been saved for the better outcome. Without the moratorium, the cod population would have gone extinct and led to several losses. Despite the moratorium, the cod species is still considered as endangered in 2012. Consequently, the same lost in the way of life as the moratorium had done would happen. The same can be said about the loss of jobs except it would be worse since there may have been no help from the government at all. The government gave $225 per week after the initial two weeks for ten weeks and access to training for new jobs.[] Albeit this not being enough, it was better than having no help at all. If there was no moratorium, there was no guarantee for help from the government. Moreover, the government strengthened their economy after with a larger income from snow crabs and shrimp.[] After the moratorium, the government also diversified the economy from more than just fishing and improved sections such as tourism.[] A diverse economy is more stable and less vulnerable to collapsing since it is not completely reliant in one sector. As a result, the electricity required to meet the growing demand is mainly generated from renewable energy resources, and this trend is expected to continue in the next decades [1]. Hydro and wind are major renewable energy resources and are free of greenhouse gas emissions [2]. This makes them valuable environmentally sustainable and economic resources for power generation around the world. A hydro–wind hybrid power system is an excellent combination for improved reliability, where the resources abound [3]. In Newfoundland and Labrador, there is enormous potential for hydro and wind renewable energy resources, with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This condition imposes unique challenges on the planning and operation of a hydro–wind integrated power system in a reliable manner [8]. Previous studies on wind penetration issues and solutions found that the limiting factors of wind integration include penetration level, forecasting reliability, geographic diversity, hydro generation flexibility and control of the overall system [6]. Control is a key enabling factor for the deployment of renewable energy systems [9]. Control techniques such as linear and dynamic programming, genetic algorithms, and neural networks, proposed by past research, for the control and economic dispatch of renewable energy systems, have not been acknowledged to be error free [3]. Two major flaws identified in existing techniques include the lack of ease–of–use, and adaptability to new situations and evolving regulations [3]. These flaws pose major operational challenges to utilities and thus, make control technologies optimization an imperative research endeavor. In 1998, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Policy 1 – Generation Control and Performance Standard (CPS) – was enforced to ensure effective frequency control in interconnected power systems. The issue has caused a plethora of controversy in the international community; depicting if seal hunting should cease or continue. In Glavin 's An Enviro 's Case for Seal Hunt he supports the murder of seals; however, he only supports it for human consumption, but not the sport. Glavin 's tone of writing is very biased and his argument is all sorts of information pulled together that do not relate; all of his supporting arguments are far – fetched and do not correspond. Glavin poorly supports his position due to the fact that, he does not connect his information to his argument and he uses four of the ten common logical fallacies; such as red herring, false analogy, confirmation bias, and 'it doesn 't follow '. Glavin uses a fallacy of irrelevance to the hunting of seals attempting to distract the reader with colossal names. • 61. The Rise Of The Fishing Industry Before the rise of the fishing industry in the 1950's Newfoundland and Labrador struggled with an unstable economy and many citizens found themselves living in poverty. Initially on shore methods had minimal impact on the environment and fish population, as in–shore fishermen followed a strict season and fished only during the summer leaving the population to migrate in the fall. As technology advanced steam boats made off shore fishing possible, this allowed draggers to fish in massive quantities regardless of the season. At first this was very promising to the Canadian government and the Fishery Products International Company (FPI) as they saw huge profits, and the opportunity to create jobs for fisherman and factory workers alike. However, with continued offshore fishing the inshore fisherman saw significant depletion in the fish population, specifically cod. It took far too long for the government to realize the severity of the issue and when they did it was too late. In 1992 the government announced a complete ban of cod fishing. This resulted in the loss of 19000 jobs, and all profit coming from this industry throwing many small fishing towns in Newfoundland back into poverty. All stakeholders felt the effects of the ban; the External Stakeholders FPI explains why they supplied the boats to major corporations and over exaggerated the cod population and Internal Stakeholders consisted of the independent fishermen and their families and how they were affected. • 63. Comparing The Code Of Conduct In The Newfoundland And... In most professions, there is an expected degree of professionalism that must be met. Teachers are not excluded from this and are held to a standard. An attempt has been made to define expectations and regulate appropriate interactions for teachers. These are written in the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association's Code of Ethics (2013). This code applies to all members of the Newfoundland and Labradors' Teacher Association, and the members are expected to be aware of the guide and adhere to it (2013). Teachers are very visible members of society and often find themselves under scrutiny. (Neumark, 2014). An individual entering the teaching profession should do so with a degree of professionalism and respect in which to regulate their own behaviour. However, there will always be times when circumstance tests teachers' professionalism. This is when the code of ethics should be regarded. This code offers guidance on how to have effective and professional interactions with students, other teachers, and parents. It also offers guidelines on professional growth and organization. The code is not a comprehensive list of all expected practice but serves as a guide rather than a set of very specific rules (2013). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the very least, it would be comforting to know you have the support of your own colleagues. Students can and will complain about other teachers to a favoured one. This should be dealt with in the most professional way possible. The code references this specifically stating that "A teacher does not criticize the professional competence or professional reputation of a colleague" (2013). This is of course important as doing otherwise would make for a very uncomfortable environment for both teachers involved and the students. Undermining another teacher for your own gain should never take ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They were being mainly used as gun dogs in the war. Gun dogs are a category of dog breeds that are used to assist hunters to find and retrieve game, and the Labrador Retrievers were especially useful for this because they are born with a natural knack for retrieving. There are 2 genes in Labrador Retrievers that decide the dog's colouring. The first gene determines the real colour, yellow, black or brown; the second gene is in charge of the pigmentation of the actual colouring of the dog's coat. It determines whether the Labrador Retriever should be light yellow or a rich dark brown colour. Yellow, Black and chocolate are not the only colors of Labrador retriever. Silver Labradors are chocolate Labs with a dilution gene that makes their coat to be lighter in color. Yellow and Black labs may also have these dilution genes, except the difference in their coat color isn't as remarkable as it is with the chocolate. Although, the idea of silver Labs is still controversial among breeders, as no kennel clubs recognize it as an acceptable color. Still, some breeders passionately advocate for silver Labs to be recognized and allowed to compete in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Canada's Energy Sector Canada's energy sector is probably one of the most important to Canada, and possibly the most important to the world. In 1846, Abraham Gesner produced kerosene from coal in Nova Scotia. He was the first man of his time to do this in Canada. In 1870, the government of the United Kingdom handed over control of the land used by the Hudson Bay Company to Canada. Canadian's did not realize that the land they had been given, mainly Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba was extremely rich in minerals, mostly fossil fuels. Canada is a major player in energy imports and exports. Canada produces 6% of the worlds energy. In fact, only Saudi Arabia, USA, Russia and China produce more energy than Canada. Canada produces 33% of the worlds Uranium, and 13% of the worlds hydro–electricity, making it the largest producer of these two forms of energy in the world. Canada is also a major supplier of coal, petroleum and natural gas. Alberta is the home of most of Canada's oil and coal fields. Canada has remote oil and gas facilities off the coast of Eastern Canada, "Newfoundland and Labrador became a significant producer of oil in 1997 with the opening of the Hibernia offshore oil project" (Clark, 2006, pg 353). They are accessed by helicopter that transport workers to and from the facilities. Due to constant harsh weathers and rough seas, it can be dangerous for helicopters to travel. An entrepreneur, American inventor and naturalist, Birdseye began his career as a taxidermist. Birdseye's next field assignment, off and on from 1912 to 1915, was in Labrador in the Dominion of Newfoundland (now part of Canada), where he became further interested in food preservation by freezing, especially fast freezing. He was taught by the Inuit how to ice fish under very thick ice. In –40°C weather, he discovered that the fish he caught froze almost instantly, and, when thawed, tasted fresh. He recognized immediately that the frozen seafood sold in New York was of lower quality than the frozen fish of Labrador, and saw that applying this knowledge would ...
