Day still burn strong in many Americans. Earth Day celebrations continue in the US to this day, and
the anniversary celebrations garner significant publicity. Each big celebration has a main purpose,
and participation is usually related to the context of the time. 2017 Earth's day included a March for
Science as a response to President Donald Trump's rollback of certain key environmental legislation.
Recent Earth Days have also celebrated the Paris Agreements and other landmark plans to reduce
global warming. Celebrations in the past, however, have been criticized. During the 2000
celebration, Vice President Al Gore's speech was detracted from by Leonardo DiCaprio being
named as honorary national chairman. An otherwise important topic was taken less seriously by
including the actor. The 1990 celebration suffered from splintered interest groups and an unclear
message. Additionally, polling data into the new millennium shows that while over 80 percent of
people agree with the broadest goals of the environmental movement, only 16 percent say they are
active participants and membership in environmental organizations is declining. The reasons for
some of the struggles surrounding Earth Day can possibly be explained in Anthony Downs
article "Up and Down with Ecology." Downs explains that public interest rarely stays focused on
one issue for very long and that enthusiasm for a cause is usually tempered once people realize the
difficulty of policy change. The enthusiasm is there every year on April 22, but when people
come back down to and realize the difficult path ahead, some a prone to find other causes. Denis
Hayes also emphasizes the importance of directed action for maintaining a cause. He says it is easier
to be an activist if you know exactly what you are doing and exactly what you are fighting for; it is

Since the dawn of the industrial revolution, human activities have had an undeniable impact on the
environment. The destruction of the environment has far–reaching consequences, and there is little
that has been done to help improve, not just maintain, the environment. As seen in the degradation
of our soil, air quality, and water availability, current human behavior causes a decline in the
earth's health, and current environmental protections are few and far between. Soil quality is
currently declining, and good soil is something that is vital to the continuation of healthy
agricultural practices and healthy people. Without good soil, there can be no base to the

power is not generated by giant dams we build, and the irrigation we dig is useless. If there is no

About three hundred years ago there was a definite spurt in the population of the human race.
This was brought about with advancements in sanitation and technology, as well as a dramatic
fall in the death rate. By around 1850 the world's population had grown to about 1 billion and by
1930 it had risen to 2 billion. The current figure is around 6 billion and at this rate the United
Nations estimates the population will be at about 9 billion by 2054. This would be a 900% increase

The culture of many forest–peoples has been destroyed and deforestation also affects the livelihoods
of between 200 and 500 million people, who depend on the rainforest for their shelter and food.
Deforestation may also lead to global climate imbalances. There is also a major problem when it
comes to carbon storage. With the removal of the trees excessive carbon dioxide levels in the
environment may lead to global warming, with many problematic side effects. While deforestation is
now viewed as problem, historically it was considered to assist natural development and so now
some countries rely on the rainforest for income and the problem will continue whilst they have no
alternative.
Another problem caused by humans is as a result of the increase in demand for extensive farming
throughout the world. In order for crops to be grown trees have to be cut down and I have

Much of our waste is made up of glass, metal, plastic and paper. Our natural resources such as trees,
oil, coal and aluminum are used up in enormous amounts to make these products and the resources
will one day be completely used up. So in order to cut down on the energy used lets reuse.
What can you do?
* Sort out your trash. Organic matter (e.g. potato peelings, left over food, tea leaves etc.) can be put
in to a compost heap in the garden and used as a good, natural fertilizer for the plants.
*Aluminum cans, glass bottles and newspapers are often collected from our doorsteps, but other
items such as plastic bottles, juice cartons and cardboard may not be, in which case they can be
taken to nearby recycling banks. You can find out where they are by just searching on line. * Use
recycled paper to help save trees. Chlorine bleach is usually used to make newspapers and this
pollutes rivers. It's better to use unbleached, recycled paper whenever you can. * Take your old
clothes to charity shops. Some are sold, others are returned to textile mills for recycling. * Try to
avoid buying plastic. It's hard to recycle. One way to cut down on plastic is to refuse to use plastic
bags offered by supermarkets and use cloth re–useable shopping bags instead, or re–use plastic bags
over and over again, until they wear out and then recycle them.

the BVI's areas of natural and historical value. As always much hard work and dedication on the part
of the employees of these Departments went into the planning and implementation of this
programme. However, this challenging undertaking would not have been successful without the
cooperation and volunteer support of individuals in our sister island communities. Funding for
materials and transportation costs were also defrayed in part through sponsorship from local
businesses. The annual summer programme makes a lasting impression on the young minds of our
territories youth as many of them are given the opportunity to explore and experience nature in ways
that they are unaccustomed. I understand that many of the youngsters in this programme
demonstrated sound knowledge of the environment around them and understood the need to
preserve and protect it. Some of this knowledge can be attributed to their parents and other elders in
our communities. Our educational institutions also play a key role in sensitizing our territory's youth
to the importance of caring for the environment. Conservation & Fisheries Department regularly

throughout the United States. Currently, it's a global event that people from all over the world
celebrate. Before the movement started in the 1970's, a great oil spill happened in Santa Barbara,
California 1969. Thus, the oil spill encouraged Senator Gaylord Nelson to have a day, to specifically
focus on helping the environment and teach the public about natural disasters (History of earth day).
As a result a year later, millions of people went to the streets protesting for the negative impacts of
more than a hundred years of industrial development on the environment. The natural environment
has been on a road of destruction ever since the industrial revolution. In addition, humans are
overwhelmed with gaining wealth that they have ignored the natural environmental needs for
hundreds of years. It can be said that this movement has been a great success in protecting the
environment with all the participation of the civilians. There are three main reasons why Earth Day
is successful: The first, is the strong focus of the movement, which promotes public awareness of
pollution problems, the second, is all the positive influence the main media has have for the
movement, and lastly, is the overall knowledge that people receive after participating in an Earth
Day activity.

the poor to protest for the environment rights, allowing for the United States Environmental
Protection Agency to pass the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts by the end of

is a different environmental problem like climate changes, air pollution, and other pollutants. More

Earth, home to the beauty of blue skies and clear waters, and bearer of each delicate life form, from
the moss floating atop rivers, to the lions that prowl the mesa deserts; however, Earth is also home to
the most destructive life form, humans. People reap the fruit of the Earth and bask in the beauty of
nature, yet for generations, the efforts to protect the environment have only declined. The pollution
that is wrought upon the environment every day is too often ignored for "more important" issues,
such as poverty or crime; however, protecting the literal soil that people dwell on is just as vital as
patrolling the society in which they live. Environmental pollution is a growing issue in the U.S.
today, caused primarily by the lack of public concern or caution, harmful chemicals used by
manufacturers and farmers, and lack of government enforcement or intervention. To begin with, the
energy wasted out of pure negligence while performing daily tasks and activities wreaks havoc on
the environment, greatly contributing to this issue. Fortunately, more often than not, excessive
waste can easily be avoided altogether by being conscious of what is necessary, and what's just
luxury. However, the extra couple of seconds that it takes to flip off a light switch or turn down a
faucet often proves to be too inconvenient of a task for many individuals. By far, unnecessary use of
