National Socialism Essay
The rise of National Socialism in post–WWI Germany is an understandable reaction to the problems
of the Versailles Peace Treaty, considering the German attitudes and beliefs at the time. These
attitudes and beliefs were the result of generations of Prussian militarism, extreme racist
nationalism, and, most importantly, the failure of the Treaty of Versailles signed in June of 1919.
The rise of the Nazi party, and their extremist National Socialist doctrine appealed directly to these
attitudes and beliefs that permeated Germany society after the first World War.
Since the unification of Germany in the late 19th century, attitudes of nationalism, Prussian

Unemployment was widespread and a whole generation of young Germans was left hopeless and
without direction. For many Germans during these terrible times, mere survival was a challenge.
This wretched condition is apparent in Heinrich Hauser's description of Germany's unemployed who
lined the highways, homeless and destitute, with no place to go. As he describes it, "unskilled young
people, for the most part... had been unable to find a place for themselves in any city or town in
Germany, and... had never had a job and never expected to have one." Germany had been forced to

It was these grave conditions that set up the Nazis' rise to power. Feeding on the emotions of the

superiority, the supreme leader of the National Socialist movement, Adolf Hitler, appealed to the
age–old attitudes and beliefs of the German people. Continuing the Prussian militaristic tradition,
Hitler called for a full mobilization of German society with the ultimate purpose of territorial
expansion. He wanted to eliminate all opposition within Germany and unite all German peoples

Fortunate and merciful; yet brutal and poignant. Heinrich von Kleist's The Earthquake in Chile

Life As A Contest With Fate By Heinrich Von Kleist
When is the proper moment to think? Is it better to think before, during, or after an action? The
writer, Heinrich von Kleist, argues that one should think after an act. He uses the example of a
wrestler, "The athlete, at that moment when he is holding his opponent in his grip, simply has no
recourse but to act spontaneously, on inspiration; and if he begins to calculate which muscles to
contract and which limbs to move in order to throw him, he will always draw the short straw and be
thrown himself" (Kleist, 1810). In this example Kleist is correct that it is more appropriate to reflect
on your actions rather, but is this logic acceptable in all occasions? Or when an individual should
think be dependent on the situation at hand? In the same essay, Kleist states "life itself is a contest
with fate", however should the entirety of life be treated as a contest (Kleist, 1810)?

What was Richard Wagner's explanation of German nature or the inherent sense of what defines a

The Pros And Cons Of Antisemitism
Equally as important, I've noticed that antisemitism and racism are associated with their racially
constructed prejudice principles. As mentioned continuously throughout my essay, these terms
comparably show those oppressed seen as "lesser" than those of other races. In particular, I've found
that Jews were viewed as if they were like the "unfamiliar people" that were already known as
"inferior" (Burton and Loomba 21). Thus, this automatically encouraged me to believe that Jews
were compared to people that were already dealing with racism. Plainly, it connects those that
follow racism with anti–semites because they are both viewing Jews and people of color as the same
inferior races and not as individuals. I've also realized that Eugenics have even gone on to illustrate
that physical traits testify to personality traits and intelligence, which is used against people of color
and Jews by those that are racist or anti–semitic. For example, Jews and blacks were viewed to have
"ingratitude" and "stubbornness", which are known to be undesirable traits (Burton and Loomba 21).
If that isn't prejudiced enough, Eugenics have even compared the lower races to the "female" of the
human species, which is believed to be inferior to the stronger "male" races (Levine 55). These

intellectual, and political figures from each side of the political spectrum grasped the theory and
interpreted it in various ways. In this paper, we will discuss three different nineteenth–century
thinkers and their conception of Social Darwinism. The conservative, Heinrich von Treitschke, and
liberal Herbert Spencer both gave arguments on the usefulness of competition between people on a
global scale. The anarchist, Peter Kropotkin, refuted the belief of constant competition among

and assimilate to the culture of their respective European nation – implying that the Christian
European was superior to that of the Jew. English liberal Herbert Spencer gave his own defense of
Social Darwinism and conflict between human beings. Spencer believed that competition between
animals helped advance their spieces to a higher level over a long period of time; he extended this

competition between humans had exemplified the ability to root out the weak from the earth. The

Nationalism's true identity has always been faulty. It is simply the idea that one's country is better
than another based on the sole premise that they were born there. Over time, nationalism has not
changed. People just began to use it differently, or more specifically, with more pride and violence.
This change can account for the increasingly problematic events in Europe from the eighteenth to
twentieth centuries. Like any grouping system, such as religion, differences inevitably cause
disputes. Wars between religions have been occurring since the beginning of time to the present day.

rooted in people's emotions and is fueled from agreement. It leaves no room for peace in a world

harmless at first glance, can be easily manipulated and tremendously destructive to a worldly

The ability to inspire people to feel pride towards one's country, can hinder the ability for people to
realize what is morally right and wrong. Heinrich von Treitschke, a German historian, argued that
Germans should view nationalism as the ideology to live by. Whether it involved having to fight in
wars or allowing the monarchy to obtain the majority of the power, Germans had to do what is right
for the country. Treitschke argued that if Germany was going to thrive among other countries, the
people of Germany had to accept the fact that not all races are created equal. These ideologies

Intro/Education/Work: William Edward Burghart DuBois, more commonly known as W.E.B.
DuBois, was born February 23, 1868. Raised in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, he grew up in
what was considered to be a moderately well integrated and tolerant community. His mother's
family was included in the miniscule population of free black people– because of this, he was
certainly considered privileged as opposed to people of color who were much less fortunate or who
lived in highly segregated communities. DuBois attended the town's local public school, both
elementary and high school levels, and excelled. His teachers recognized his abilities and often
encouraged him in his academic pursuits. DuBois graduated at the top of his class in 1884, and he
was determined to attend college as well. DuBois was set on attending Harvard, however, he didn't
have the funds available to do so. With receiving donations of twenty five dollars a year from from
four different congregational churches in his hometown of Great Barrington, DuBois was able to
attend Fisk University instead. Fisk University is a historically black college, located in Nashville,
Tennessee. DuBois attended Fisk from 1885 to 1888. Having traveled south to attend Fisk, DuBois
had his first experience with southern racism, which, at that time, included lynchings and intense
