Executive Summary Of Eli Lilly
Executive Summary Eli Lilly is a lending pharmaceutical company based in the United States.
Looking to globalize their company and emerge into the Asian markets, they entered into a joint
venture with Ranbaxy, who are based in India. With Eli Lilly's expertise in foreign knowledge and
having many resources and capital, this was a great complement to Ranbaxy who provided
government contacts and information on the local markets. Dr. Tallarigo is the president of
Intercontinental Operations and also the decision maker in this case. As the Indian market
recognized patent protection in 2005, this attracted more foreign investments, which in turn caused
Tallarigo to re–evaluate the joint venture with Ranbaxy. Ranbaxy appeared to want to exit the joint
venture due to large financial burdens from their large network of international sales, along with
wanting to refocus their business to become an international research and development ... Show

India's middle class of approximately 300 million people is continually developing, yet the majority
do not retain health insurance. This vast untapped market drew foreign interests and in the 1980's
the Indian government opened the industry to allow foreign direct investments to be made. Despite
the lower profits compared to global markets, Eli Lilly knew they could quickly expand their market
presence by doing business in India. The pricing controls and regulations from the 1970's posed a
threat to profits and Eli Lilly would need a local and knowledgeable partner to break into this
market successfully. The strategic joint venture formed with Ranbaxy was the answer. Ranbaxy
could handle manufacturing locally, provide a distribution network, and could manage brand
recognition. They also dealt with regulations and health system bureaucracy. In return, Eli Lilly's
revenues from their innovative pharmaceuticals caused Ranbaxy's market shares to

Literacy Connections: Case Study
Thank you for meeting with us Friday.
It is reassuring to know you understand the urgency of the crisis Literacy Orange is currently under,
and have taken a positive, first step to resolve the matter. We, at Literacy Connections, understand
the current financial and staff problems you are facing and, for almost a year, have actively
communicated and worked with Christine and other staff members in hopes of bringing the
organization back to a stabilized and sustainable position. However, as you can imagine, this is no
easy task. We will continue to try to approach this crisis with the sensitivity and urgency it requires.

We do not need to tell you just how difficult it is to secure funds to operate a nonprofit and how
much more challenging it is when the organization is running on a few years of deficits. However,
this now affects the consortium as a whole and limits the effectiveness of resources allocated to
literacy services in Orange County.
As discussed, we look forward to receiving Literacy Orange short and long term plans addressing
the current financial and program crisis by the end of next week, as agreed. A comprehensive plan is
urgently needed to put the program back on its feet and minimize the negative impact the consortia
would have to absorb should Literacy Orange fail again to meet contract goals.
I must re–emphasis the urgency of this matter as inaction will be prejudicial to our Literacy
Connections and the consortium as a whole. Any further delay in developing and implementing the
proper program and financial safeguards, will only expose the other compliant members of the
consortium to unnecessary and heighten scrutiny from

battles, and introductions of new weapons, ideas, or religions from foreign places. The mentioned
introductions included firearms, Buddhism, and Christianity. The geography, climate, and location

What Is The Values Of The Last Samurai
2.0 Content and Analysis
2.1 Culture and Leadership
The Last Samurai is a beautiful movie which consists of many values. For example, leadership.
Algren as a military advisor, the American civil war veteran who have been offered by the Japanese
to train the Japanese government army. In this movie, Algren has always been a charming leader.
Captain Algren's leading skills are still impressive even when he's in a weak condition. Although
Algren is wounded yet he still struggles desperately until he is collapse. He killed the executioner
with the staff's spear tip when he is about to conquer the fight. The value of not giving up has shown
in Algren as a leader. Besides that, a leader require the ability to influence which is seen through

The behaviour of Latin American which is more towards individualism has much different
compared to the behaviour of Asian culture which is more towards collectivism. American tends to
think more about themselves whereas Japanese culture is more about entire group. Algren, an
American representative is more concern about the wealth and himself whereas the Japanese
Samurai are worried about the economy and their army being trained. Therefore, Algren showed
disrespectful attitude to the Japanese Samurai at first and the Japanese consulate. His rudeness
during their conversation gave a bad impression to the Japanese. Thus, it caused dissatisfaction in
between Algren and the Samurais. In conclusion, conflict can happen easily when two different
cultures meet up without a proper communication. Therefore, it should be handled well so that the
conflict can be avoided (Dereck,

This fact (or maybe this claim) has been proved by the behaviour of the negotiation teams from
Megatronics, Tanaka and Eurodata. During the FINS–simulation the different multinational
companies (Megatronics and E.T.) pursuit different strategies: While Megatronics was trying to
avoid any cooperations with local companies (that also means no employment of capital) agreed
E.T. to invest (relative high employment of capital) into Joint Ventures with local firms if the
governments give them some safeguards to reduce risks and if it provides some economic support.
According to the political and economic situation in Tropicalia and Paradiso the initial position for
the government in the negotiations was difficult. The government was supposed to convince
multinational companies to invest in the country – that means to chose a market entry mode with
capital employment. After the merger of Tanaka and Eurodata to E.T. it became clear in a very early
stage of the negotiations that E.T. would be the only company who was willing to invest in foreign
markets and would not just try to exploit local advantages without taking any closer relationship to
their cooperation partners or the local market. This means that there was no real competition any
longer between different companies who wants to invest in the fast growing market of Tropicalia. As

Russia And Japanese Industrialization Analysis
In the 1800s, Europe began to industrialize, slowly transitioning from an agricultural to industrial
economy. As people began to migrate to cities and factories began pop up all over, along with
railroads and telegraphs, the militaries and economic might of these countries began to grow.
However, while Europe was busy industrializing, Russia and Japan remained isolated with
agriculture–based economies. When Japan's weakness was revealed by the arrival of Commodore
Perry with large gunboats and a powerful US Navy, Russia's inferiority was revealed when they
decisively lost the Crimean War to the better–equipped European military. Afterward, both resolved
to better themselves and modernize like their European counterparts. While Japan and Russia's ...

In contrast to Russia and Japan, Great Britain's industrialization occurred differently. England was
actually the first to industrialize and industrial Great Britain served as a model for Japan's and
Russia's later on. Industrialization was a slow, organic process in England started after feudalism but
did cause much of the populace to leave their farms and migrate to urban centers, causing the
creation of tenements. However, England's industrialization was privately incentivized. Rather than
the government creating economic incentives to modernize, England's few natural resources and
therefore ambition to take the resources of others caused private capitalists to invest money into
building factories and growing industries. And like Japan, England's industrialization was very
successful, as the technological advancements and new innovation allowed their superior military to
overcome other countries and imperialize, take over new regions. Thus, even though
industrialization in different countries around the world did have differences, industrialization as a
process that countries go through have similar characteristics. It causes massive social changes and

The Contribution Of Oda Nobunaga's Impact On Japan
Hideyoshi under his Daimyo, or feudal lord, Oda Nobunaga, would learn well what it meant to be a
samurai. Of course the samurai protected their homes and families, but their true glory came on the
battlefield, defending their lord against enemies. Born the son of a daimyo in 1534, Nobunaga's
reign though short, had an immense impact on Japan. Lord of Nagoya Castle, he destroyed opposing
clans in brilliant campaigns against superior forces. He was the first daimyo general to adopt the
newly imported Western muskets. He gradually gained control of the region round the capital
Kyoto, which he took in 1568. In 1580, he became master of all central Japan.
Nobunaga continued to amass power, but before he could subdue the whole country, he was caught
off–guard one night by a rebellious vassal, Akechi Mitsuhide. The life of the most powerful warlord
in Japan ended in 1582. Ruthless and feared upon the mere mention of his name, Nobunaga was the
first to begin the unification of war–torn Japan. A unification, which Hideyoshi would later complete

Japanese society respected the samurai as those who had the power to resolve conflicts and "keep
the peace". They were therefore entitled to govern the country because of their superior military
power and peace–keeping ability. They ruled because of their power, yet they had to also prove their
entitlement to do so. This is why legitimation was needed. Becoming a samurai and learning the
way of the warrior was dependant on lineal descent. Warriors who were not of direct line ancestry
were allowed to be subservient samurai yet were tabooed by the imperial court at ever becoming a
shogun, the Great general who ruled over government in feudal Japan. In this age, pedigree was an
important factor– it lent an air of legitimacy to naked

India 's Foreign Direct Investments
Despite its deceleration over the past few years, India has become one of the most attractive places
to outsource operations for corporations due to several important factors: Its young, well–educated
low cost labor (Median age 27, according to the World Fact Book, CIA), the gradual economic
liberalization and industry deregulation and their several technical skills are only to mention a few
of the characteristics that make, along with China and certain other rising Asian nations, serious
candidates for hosting big corporation's foreign direct investments (Ranker, 2014). But India has had
to come a long way to stand to where it is now. Several events throughout history have made the

Under this system, Nehru sought to strengthen the agricultural and power sectors, providing
agriculture 45% and industry 5% of the resource during the first Five–Year Plan. It initially gave
India an increase of 3.6% (Exhibit 10a) on its gross domestic product during the first five years.
Following this the government isolated the country from foreign investment (as nationalist leaders
feared a dependency on it) and trade in an effort to promote domestic production and as a strategy to
reduce imports. Since the government had also created a complex system of licensing through the
Permit Raj, resources became scarce, the complexity of its bureaucracy fostered corruption and
became a reason of delay for companies. This made it hard for other important areas of the country
to help increase its economic growth. Also, the government gradually came into possession of most
of the private sectors: By 1956, it already had control of commercial banking, oil, insurance and
some important resources such as steel and mining. The government, along with the large family
conglomerates controlled almost all Indian economy and could arbitrarily choose how each industry
would be ran; it regulated the where, the how, the how much and the whether or not a company

Comparing European Feudaism And Japanese Feudalism
What is European feudalism and Japanese feudalism? European feudalism involved Kings, knights,
and peasants. First the King would give a part of his land to his knights in return the knights would
promise loyalty and military aid to the king. Next the knights would grant peasants part of their land
and in return the peasants would return loyalty and promise homage. This gave everyone a win win
situation for all parties. Japanese feudalism how ever is a little different though. According to chegg
study, "Japanese feudalism was organized around a four–tiered social structure, with the samurai
warrior class at the top. Below them ranked farmers (including fisherman), and then artisans, with
merchants and shopkeepers at the bottom. This hierarchy was due to Confucian ideals, which
emphasized the importance of individuals who produced things." Unlike European feudalism
farmers were given a higher rank because they put people who produced things on top. Merchants
were seen as evil, liars, and greedy therefore they were placed at the bottom. For starters European
feudalism started in 800's CE and appeared in Japan in 1100's. European and Japanese feudalism
were politically similar and different. For starters they both used the same warfare style and
weaponry. According to thoughtco.com, "Both knights and samurai rode horses into battle, used
swords and wore armor." The only difference are the materials that each armor is made out of. For
knights their armor is full metal which weighs them down while Samurai armor is made of leather
or metal plates. The biggest difference we're the disadvantages that knights suffered from heavy
armor. According to thoughtco.com, "European knights were almost immobilized by their armor,
needing help up on to their horses, from where they would simply try to knock their opponents off
their mounts." While the Japanese had a better advantage due to their lightweight armor. According
to thoughtco.com, "Samurai, in contrast, wore light–weight armor that allowed for quickness and
maneuverability, at the cost of providing much less protection." Even though both are very different
each had their of advantages as well the knights were more protected while Samurais were faster.

The visit of Narendra Modi, Indian Prime Minister to Nepal undoubtedly strengthened the ties
between the two nations. But, most importantly, it also provides Nepal with an avenue for
development through investment – foreign direct investment.

Nepal can find a place in the developed nations of the world." – Narendra Modi
After the Indian PM addressed the Nepalese parliament, less than a month and a half later, the
countries sat down and inked a deal said to be the largest foreign investment Nepal has received
until now. The Nepalese Investment Board signed a Project Development Agreement with GMR
Group, an Indian multinational firm regarding the construction of the Upper Karnali hydropower
estimated worth US $ 1.5 billion. The project will generate 900 megawatts of electricity; of which
Nepal will receive 12 per cent free energy, along with 27 per cent equity. GMR Group will hand

The role of Japanese foreign policy in relation to the 17th Century crisis
Research Question
Did the foreign policy adopted by the Tokugawa Bakufu help Japan to cope with the challenges of
the 'general crisis' during the 17th Century, or did it worsen the problems faced by Japan?
Hypothesis
Hypothesis: The foreign policy adopted by the Tokugawa Bakufu served to help Japan to cope with
the challenges of the 'general crisis' during the 17th Century.
Null Hypothesis: The foreign policy adopted by the Tokugawa Bakufu did not help Japan to cope
with challenges of the 'general crisis' during the 17th Century, and instead served to worsen the
situation.
Assumptions
In this essay, I will agree with certain scholars that there was indeed a 'general crisis' during the 17th
Century, where many countries in the world suffered from decline in several aspects such as
economy and politics. This 'general crisis' affected Japan as well, although Japan generally fared
better than other countries in East Asia during the 17th Century. ... Show more content on

isolation for Japan that resulted in a reduction of foreign trade and diplomatic relations. However,
even beyond the Dutch at Nagasaki, Japan actually sought to establish trade and diplomatic relations
with its East Asian neighbours such as Korea and Ryukyu. Therefore, in this essay, I will take the
foreign policy of Japan during the 17th Century as being a period of controlled contact rather than
isolation. I will also avoid using the term sakoku as it implies isolationism, and use the general term

How Did The Edo Period Impact The Tokugawa Period
How did the Tokugawa Period impact the people of Japan?
The Tokugawa period or otherwise known as the Edo period has been recognised as an extremely
significant aspect of Japanese history and left history changing effects on the country. In this essay,
five primary aspects of the Edo period, which has helped produce present day Japan and had greatly
impacted on the nation during this period will be addressed:
Politics, Social structure,The Samurai, Relations with the West and Culture.
Politics:
Tokugawa rulers during the 17th century greatly improved a multitude of separate political aspects
and as a result, positively impacted the nation and citizens. A primary example of this is Tokugawa's
establishment of the capital at Edo which in present day Japan is called the iconic Tokyo.
Additionally, he established a strong central government, along with his shoguns imposing an era of
unity, stability, and peace in Japan. The shoguns closely monitored and controlled the local daimyo
possessed a relative amount of power but remained to be tested for their loyalty and kept under
control by the shoguns who restricted their family and eventually became hostages. The daimyo was
required to maintain two residences in an attempt to prevent rebellion because of this wasting factor
which prohibited them as they had minuscule amounts of time to construct a powerful army due to
constantly needing to defend two residences. The Tokugawa period was an era of peace, stability,

Chaucer's Code Of Chivalry
The foremost aspect of chivalry that should be understood is what this code of conduct actually
implied for the nobles of the Medieval Ages. When it comes to the concept of chivalry developed
during the time of the Crusades in the middle Ages, it began as a code of conduct for the knights.
For them, their actions were not solely occasional, but rather a way of life. The key ideals behind
chivalry were not intelligible acts that could be performed. Yet, they were about attitudes and virtues
that should be owned. The standard of chivalry, nonetheless, had considerably deeper roots. An
author of Bloody Constraint, Theodor Meron said, "War and Chivalry in Shakespeare, states that the

But Politeness should be the expression of a benevolent regard for the feelings of others; it's a poor
virtue if it's motivated only by a fear of offending good taste. In its highest form Politeness
approaches love. "Modesty and complaisance, actuated by respect for others‟ feelings, are at the
root of politeness"13. Politeness is yet another typical Japanese virtue; however, Nitobe makes sure
that it is not a superficial display of adulation but a sincere expression of care and concern for
others: "Politeness is a poor virtue, if it is actuated only by a fear of offending good taste, whereas it

implies a due regard for the fitness of things, therefore due respect to social positions"14. He also
gives an excellent explanation for the seemingly different practice of gift–giving between the
Japanese and Western customs. That is, whereas Westerners present their gifts as wonderful and
excellent items, Japanese give theirs saying they are poor and useless ones. Nitobe expounds that
these two contrasting practices actually convey the same feeling and thought; they are just two ways
of saying the same thing. In other words,

Analysis Of Late Feudalism In Japan
Modern Japan with its bright lights, big cities, rich culture, and modern technology makes it one of
the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Despite being considered a modern, developed
country, one can argue that it is still dragging behind in terms of social equality. This is the result of
grueling efforts to depart from ancient traditional customs, most of which took place only a couple
of centuries ago. Even though there is still much to be done, relatively speaking, a thorough analysis
of Japanese historical literature illustrates that individualism in Japan has come a long way since the
Tokugawa period. Late Feudalism in Japan was characterized by its contradictory nature of being
centralized politically while maintaining feudal institutions, thus earning the title of a "centralized
feudalist state" (Reischauer, pg. 73 – 74). Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokugawa
bakufu, wanted to encourage an era of peace after the constant bloodbath that occurred during the
second phase of feudalism in Japan, and this was the basis of most of the changes that distinguish
Late Feudalism from the other two phases. The most notable change he implemented was the revival
of Confucianism; this resulted in declining rates of crime and violence and a rise in literacy rates, a
phenomenon that was based on Confucius' famous phrase, "The gentleman is not a utensil"
(Confucian Analects, Handout #1). In terms of individualism, Confucianism encouraged individuals

The Tokugawa And Meiji State Ruling Class And Officials
The Tokugawa and Meiji state ruling class and officials wished to impose their ideology onto their
subjects. The ruling class and officials hoped that this would assist them in their endeavors. Their
goals differed between time periods; however, one constant is the mechanism they used to
perpetuate their ideology, mythistory. In Tokugawa Japan, they used mythistory to create an
ideology based on many religions to justify the social hierarchy the officials created (1 – professor).
The
Meiji state used mythistory to obtain national support for industrialization and modernization.
These ideologies had many adverse effects on the lives of many peasants. In the Tokugawa period,

They then would exchange this rice to merchants for currency (1). However, their means of
generating wealth were not stable; harsh weather conditions could severely hamper the output of
rice that their peasants could produce. This then decreases the number of tax that the Shogun could
levy upon their subjects because there is a limit on how much the Shogun can tax his subordinates
before they die from starvation. This caused a dilemma: The Shoguns needed to have an immense
amount of disposable wealth to be in a position to afford their lifestyle (1). Thanks to the expense of
their lifestyle, they forged loans with merchants, without an understanding of how interest rates
worked (1). As a result of their loans, many Shoguns increased the tax they imposed onto their
subordinates even though many of them barely had enough food for themselves. Therefore, the
luxurious lifestyle of the Shoguns coupled with their unstable income resulted in countless hardships
inflicted on their peasants. Many subjects of Shoguns participated in counter–mythistory because of
the tribulations forced upon them by the Shoguns due to the social hierarchy and their unsustainable
lifestyles. The subjects of many Shoguns did not sit quietly when their "benevolent" and "merciful"
lord required their subjects to pay a ludicrous and unreasonable amount of tax during famines.

Ninjas In Ancient Japan
When teens think of ninja or Samurai, they think of them in shows or in HollyWood. But there can
be some historically accurate but there is lots of ways like the way they dress, the weapons they use,
and the way they live in the world. The art of the ninja is very hard and deadly. Real ninjas are silent
killers that come from a bit of japanese culture that were very sneaky, the element of surprise was
the greatest weapon that they had. Ninjas were evil and do not care about other people's honor, they
were paid killers that just wanted money. Ninjas are more than just a normal fighter, they are
masters of ninjutsu. They are trained to kill and to assassinate targets.

the sword polisher did his work to prepare the blade for the "furniture" that surrounded it. Next, the
sword tester took the new blade and cut through the bodies of corpses or condemned criminals. They
started by cutting through the small bones of the body and moved up to the large bones. Test results
were often recorded on the nakago.(umich,Brief History of the Samurai,Mark

The Tokugawa Period: The Rise Of Fascism In Japan
The Tokugawa period signified the beginning of an eventual shift from Fascism in Japan. This was
possible through the growing supremacy of the ruling class that brought about this change. The
country went through many serious transitions during this period. Peace was enforced by a Shogun
that demanded absolute loyalty from his daimyos. The country was isolated from all foreign traders.
The Shogun saw how the rise of a lower–class revolution could cause the destruction of the upper
classes. So, to prevent a revolution in the lower classes, the Shogun began a revolution in the upper
classes. The policies enforced during the Tokugawa Period were put in place to grow the power of
the aristocracy, but eventually, it would help with the formation of a fascist government in Japan
during the early twentieth century.
The country during the Tokugawa period was closed to outsiders as a way of preventing daimyos
from gaining power, as well as preventing the rise of an independent bourgeoisie. The prevention of
the formation of a merchant class was the primary focus of the Tokugawa Shogunate, but as the
nation continued to grow its domestic economy, the formation of a bourgeoisie was impossible to
stop. Instead of forming a bureaucracy that put the economy under state run organizations, the ruling

How Did The Samurai Influence On Japanese Culture
The samurai were a powerful warrior class in Japan, and were very skilled with a sword. Samurai
used swords and were trained very well to do many things such as fire a bow while on horseback.
The samurai practiced Buddhism, which is a religion that taught people to respect the world to reach
enlightenment. When the samurai disobeyed The Bushido Code, they committed Seppuku, which is
ritual suicide for the samurai. Japanese culture was influenced by the samurai warrior class. In
Feudal Japan, people were influenced by the samurai because the samurai had to protect people. The
painting of the male and female samurai shows that samurai had to protect others. The paintings
show that the samurai were skilled, because they had a bow and sword, while riding a horse. They
had to have been skilled to fight while on a horse. The samurai looked very prepared because they
have to protect the people around them. Next, the Bushido Code shows how the samurai acted
around people. One of the rules in the Bushido Code was, " 'men must grudge money, for riches
hinder wisdom' " This means that anyone who was rich in Japan at this time, had to of acted like
they didn't care about money. Wisdom was one of the most important virtues at this time, so if

Samurai House Rules the samurai had to do their hair and get ready as soon as they wake up. This

The Origin of The Japanese Values of Precision And Punctuality
Introduction
Precision and punctuality is believed to be the order of the day in the Japanese society in both
workplaces and social settings. Punctuality is highly regarded as an important factor that has
contributed to the success of the Japanese economy in global scene. In 2013, the train transport
between Osaka and Tokyo recorded an average delay of six seconds only. There is a deep sense of
respect for other people's businesses with concerns that such activities should not be interrupted due
to lateness. However, the lack of flexibility has been faulted by critics who believe that the Japanese
people are too obsessed with time keeping and precision. However, the origin of such values is still
unknown to many with questions arising on whether such values existed before industrialization in
Japan. The fact that the values are associated with Japan's position as a global economic powerhouse
raises concern on the origin of such values.
The History of the Japanese Culture of Punctuality and Precision

The Tokugawa period Researchers believe that the Japanese were not punctual in Tokugawa period,
which lasted between 1603 and 1868. In 1857, a historical document by Willem Van Kettendyke

the Meiji restoration period between 1868 and 1912 became a turning point for the Japanese where

The Causes And Effects Of The Meiji Restoration In Japan
Change occurs all the time; change regarding people, countries, or simply just schedules, whether in
daily life or in the long–term. Changes that most people pay attention to are the larger ones, ones
that concern many people, the country, and schedules – some people may label these as revolutions.
There has been many revolutions in the past, and one of the most well–known ones is the Meiji
Restoration (Meiji Revolution) in Japan, 1866. It was when the Tokugawa Shogunate ended, and the
power was restored back to the Emperor; Meiji in Japanese means "enlightened rule", hence 'Meiji
Restoration'. The Restoration changed the nation from being a semi–isolated island nation

Knowing how, in the end, the Japanese farmers adapted to it to shape modern day can determine the
extent of the Restoration's influences on their well–being. From xenophobia to xenophilia, western
customs became popular; sitting in chairs and tables, men cutting their hair, ballroom dancing,
eating beef and choices of clothing became common. These actions are still practiced in Japan,
showing one aspect of every–day Japan life that was passed from the Restoration. Outside
influences semi–secluded traditional authority and values – from respect, conservation and loyalty,
instead it emphasized efficiency, materialism and individualism. Later on, however, the western
ways were questioned and new respect for traditional culture was developed. This can still be seen
how in daily–life, people are bustling around independently, but during festivals, they transition
back to traditional way of celebrating; going to shrines, and having cultural centers that are
frequently visited. The stabilized monetary system shifted the farmers mindset – they changed to
evolve around the new standard, although made their life easier, it pressured them that nothing is as
relaxed as before. Regardless, this mindset is still prevalent, hence why they are diligent workers

Chinese Influence On Japan
In Japan, most of the Chinese influence was brought to Japan through Korea. Japan consists of four
mountainous islands off the coast of Korea, and its early development reflected that of the mainland.
There were several waves of immigrants that came to Japan. In about 10,000 B.C.E., the Jōmon
people practiced hunting and fishing and made clay pots. People who immigrated from northeast
Asia brought agriculture and Yayoi culture with them. Yayoi communities were distinguished by
complex social organization containing rulers, soldier, artisans, and priests. Objects made in China
and Korea could be found in Japan, which shows that people were traveling back and forth from
Japan. More waves of immigrants came from Korea during the fourth through

The Samurai: Warrior and Ruler of Ancient Japan Essay
The Samurai:
Warrior and Ruler of Ancient Japan
Few countries have a warrior tradition as long and exciting as Japan. It is a tradition found in the
Samurai, the loyal and self–sacrificing knight of ancient Japan. The Samurai is a valiant warrior who
can both appreciate the beauty of nature in that of a rose blossom but will also kill or die for his
master in an instant. This well–rounded warrior was the ruling class of Japan for almost seven
hundred years. He fought for control of his country and to keep Japan free from outside influences.

This aristocratic warrior class arose during the 12th century wars between the Taira and Minamoto
clans and was consolidated in the Tokugawa period. Samurai were privileged to wear two ... Show

This is a thin dangerous line. To die without gaining one's aim is a dog's death and fanaticism. There
is no shame to this. This is the substance of the Way of the Samurai. If by setting one's heart right
every morning and evening, one is able to live as though his body were already dead, he gains
freedom in the Way. His whole life will be without blame, and he will succeed in his calling.
(Wilson, 17)
The samurai had extreme religious ideals. One samurai in particular, Tsunetomo, he began to despair
of ever gaining a position as a retainer, and her began to visit a man who was to have no small
influence on his life. This was the Zen Buddhist priest Tannen (? – 1680), a man of unbending
integrity and will, who had resigned his post as head priest at the major Nabeshima temple as a
protest against the death sentence of another priest, and when recalled, refused to return. Zen
Buddhism and the samurai had been closely related since the thirteenth century in Japan, when the
Hojo regents had discovered that its vitality and rejection of life as an object of special craving had
much to offer the warrior. Tannen had his own ideas concerning the relationship of Zen and the
warriors. "He declares that religious matters are for old men, and if young samurai learn about
Buddhism it will only bring them disaster, for they will begin to look at the world from two sets of
values rather than one." (Wilson, 13)

The factors that Cirque du Soleil reduced well below the industry's standard are the dependence on
the use of animals, individual performers, and the focus on adolescent audiences (Lazenby, 2014).
The factors that Cirque du Soleil raised well above the industry's standard were the emphasis on
creating a new form of entertainment which is expressed through dance, music, and acrobatic skill;
they also focussed on group performances instead of individualistic efforts (Lazenby, 2014). Cirque

The factors that Cirque du Soleil created that the industry has never offered are the introduction of a

Fugality Research Paper
The Order Behind Frugality Both Kemmu shikimoku, issued by the Ashikaga bakufu in 1336, and
the Code for the Warrior Households, issued by the Tokugawa bafuku in 1615, stipulated that it was
indispensable to practice frugality. Both Ashikaga bakufu and Tokugawa bafuku were new regimes
when they promulgated these two legal documents. While at first glance, these two legal documents
might seem to share similar attitudes toward frugality, in fact, they were different in nature. In this
paper, I would like to compare Kemmu shikimoku (1336) and the Code for the Warrior Households

motivations for issuing the frugality law. In so doing, I wish to ... Show more content on

Both legal documents resorted to classics and tradition as justification. For instance, in Kemmu
shikimoku, the author confessed that he had "selected the teachings of Japan and China, past and
present" (Grossberg, 22). Likewise, at the end of the Code for the Warrior Households, it stated that
"This is the clear admonition of the wise men of old" (Wm. Theodore et al., 14). Such references to
history and tradition were necessary, since both Ashikaga bakufu and Tokugawa bakufu were newly
founded, when Kemmu shikimoku and the Code for the Warrior Households were issued
respectively. While both regimes solidified their legitimacy by embracing the history, their
fundamental governing ideologies had changed. On the one hand, the authors of Kemmu shikimoku
still regarded virtue as the most important thing for the government. It said in Kemmu shikimoku
that "The [Chinese] classics say that virtue is good government, and government rests in the security
of the people. The Shogun should bring a speedy end to the people's suffering." (Grossberg, 16).
Therefore, Kemmu shikimoku stipulated the frugality law in order to "bring a speedy end to"
poverty that resulted from basara, the "ostentatious display" (Grossberg, 16). The ideal government

Positive And Negative Impact Of Imperialism In Japan
Besides changes in political, economic, and social changes, Japan's relations with its neighbors
mainly changed after the Meiji Restoration. It has also been mentioned that "a variety of changes in
Japanese society, economy, and politics, including the introduction of Western values of civilization
and enlightenment, industrialization, abolition of feudalism and establishment of a centralized,

and negative impacts from imperialism politically, culturally, and also economically with women,
the lower classes, the educated, and also the businessmen. These aspects were the most "affected" by
imperialism and its bringings. Like political rights, money, schools/education, and businesses and
imperialism impacted these in both good and bad ways. With the women, they were one of the most
"affected" by the impact of imperialism because they had the most changed about what they really
did "Women become active participants in public life as workers, consumers, writers, and
intellectuals. Interactions with Europeans and Americans inspired many of these changes. Some
Japanese thought such moves were necessary for Japan to become part of the modern world. Others

Japanese Society's Lifestyle During The Jomon Period
Japanese society has been wearing kimonos since before the Jomon period, which was before 300

behind each kimono than just style and appearance. Each time period Japan went through is shown
through what society wears, acts, and lives as a whole. Kimono is a Japanese word meaning
"clothing" but today the word is referred to as traditional Japanese clothing. A kimono is a principal
outer garment of a long robe with wide sleeves made with diverse patterns and materials. The
different patterns and colors represent Japan's culture during each time period and the heritage of the

Today, the world hosts a variety of incredibly diverse regions which span all across the globe.
Countries of all sizes and locations share common elements with each other, but have also attained
their own unique culture. Two seemingly different places, Japan and Europe, are no exception. Both
Japan and Europe were governed under Feudalism for a duration of the past. Despite having the
same government system, it is questionable as to whether or not the similarities between the two
Feudal societies were more prominent than numerous differences. However, after thorough research,
it is clear that the similarities of both Feudal societies were greater than their differences due to the
equivalence of the Japanese samurai and the European knights as well as the resemblance of the
Code of Bushido to the Code of Chivalry. One similarity between both Feudal societies was the
alikeness between the Japanese samurai and the European knights. Both categories of people served
as soldiers for the ruler and were raised for their duties from a young age. Samurai began to involve
themselves in rigorous physical training and education during childhood, much like knights who

The Tokugawa shogunate was a very important and stable government in Japanese history. It was
the connection of the feudalism and capitalism of Japan. For over two hundred years, challenges to
Tokugawa authority were few, and this era was known as the time of Great Peace. In general, its
appearance for the populace was grateful, because of a period of freedom from the warfare marked
Sengoku, from the middle of 15th century to the end of 16th century. During that period, the chain
of islands that makes up Japan was ruled by samurai and warlords. During the late sixteenth–century

people with new thoughts could still shake his rule. For a ruler, people without any disagreement

Oku no Hosomichi is arguably an evolved form of Tosa Nikki as it is reminiscent of the Tosa Nikki
in many ways. Also in regards to religion, it is a very distinguishable point that there was a great
deal of religion in Oku no Hosomichi which was not present in Tosa Nikki. There are many easily
discernable religious themes like impermanence, karma, and even Chinese concepts like yin and
yang. This is a key point in looking at the Oku no Hosomichi because of the fact that Matsuo Bashō
frequently referenced many famous religious poets like Saigyō. In terms of rhetoric there is an
emphasis on the poetry in both works. Much of the poetry in the Tosa Nikki reflects grief and
tragedy which complements the overall theme of the work. Alternately, the Oku no Hosomichi has
poetry that focuses on nature and distinguishes itself in its more blatant and somewhat vulgar
advances. The poetry of the Tosa Nikki was also placed towards the occasion as an accompaniment
and while the poetry of Oku no Hosomichi was also in accompaniment to the situation, Bashō many
times also included the back story to the poem in detail. It is also important to note that the Tosa
Nikki was written in a combination of prose and the more traditional waka, while the Oku no
Hosomichi was written in both prose and haiku. Also the writing of the Tosa Nikki was in Chinese
characters mainly because the

Warriors of the Japan, masters in the way of the sword and honor bound to follow their lords

military figure in the first millennium of Japan's history, a very interesting story is told when you
search for their origin. With a court that began to care more about looks than their country to a
society that both feared and needed them, the story of the samurai truly is one to behold. Follow
along as we trace their beginning in the birth of a new form of government, to their way of life and
the ethics and codes they followed. We will discuss some prominent figures in the history of these
warriors and finally we shall compare them to warriors found in two different cultures one from a

between the shoguns and the retainers, Japan was not politically united, and was mostly ruled by the
daimyo, who were powerful territorial lords. The last chieftain, Tokugawa Ieyasu, who sought ...

Before, due to Chinese cultural influences, the Japanese social hierarchy ranked the shogun, daimyo
and samurai at the top, whereas the merchants were at the bottom. However, once Japan became
politically stable, the interest of the Tokugawa shoguns was to reduce the number of professionally
armed warriors, so they encouraged the daimyo and samurai to become bureaucrats and government
functionaries. As they lost their accustomed place in society, many of the ruling elite fell into
financial difficulty and fell into genteel poverty. On the other hand, merchants became increasingly
wealthy and prominent because they were successful in urban environments, like the city of Edo.
They soon had more wealth than the ruling elite and some that were exceptionally wealthy were able
to purchase elite ranks or contract marriages with elite families in efforts to improve their social

Executive Summary Of Eli Lilly

  • 1. Executive Summary Of Eli Lilly Executive Summary Eli Lilly is a lending pharmaceutical company based in the United States. Looking to globalize their company and emerge into the Asian markets, they entered into a joint venture with Ranbaxy, who are based in India. With Eli Lilly's expertise in foreign knowledge and having many resources and capital, this was a great complement to Ranbaxy who provided government contacts and information on the local markets. Dr. Tallarigo is the president of Intercontinental Operations and also the decision maker in this case. As the Indian market recognized patent protection in 2005, this attracted more foreign investments, which in turn caused Tallarigo to re–evaluate the joint venture with Ranbaxy. Ranbaxy appeared to want to exit the joint venture due to large financial burdens from their large network of international sales, along with wanting to refocus their business to become an international research and development ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... India's middle class of approximately 300 million people is continually developing, yet the majority do not retain health insurance. This vast untapped market drew foreign interests and in the 1980's the Indian government opened the industry to allow foreign direct investments to be made. Despite the lower profits compared to global markets, Eli Lilly knew they could quickly expand their market presence by doing business in India. The pricing controls and regulations from the 1970's posed a threat to profits and Eli Lilly would need a local and knowledgeable partner to break into this market successfully. The strategic joint venture formed with Ranbaxy was the answer. Ranbaxy could handle manufacturing locally, provide a distribution network, and could manage brand recognition. They also dealt with regulations and health system bureaucracy. In return, Eli Lilly's revenues from their innovative pharmaceuticals caused Ranbaxy's market shares to ... • 5. Literacy Connections: Case Study Thank you for meeting with us Friday. It is reassuring to know you understand the urgency of the crisis Literacy Orange is currently under, and have taken a positive, first step to resolve the matter. We, at Literacy Connections, understand the current financial and staff problems you are facing and, for almost a year, have actively communicated and worked with Christine and other staff members in hopes of bringing the organization back to a stabilized and sustainable position. However, as you can imagine, this is no easy task. We will continue to try to approach this crisis with the sensitivity and urgency it requires. We do not need to tell you just how difficult it is to secure funds to operate a nonprofit and how much more challenging it is when the organization is running on a few years of deficits. However, this now affects the consortium as a whole and limits the effectiveness of resources allocated to literacy services in Orange County. As discussed, we look forward to receiving Literacy Orange short and long term plans addressing the current financial and program crisis by the end of next week, as agreed. A comprehensive plan is urgently needed to put the program back on its feet and minimize the negative impact the consortia would have to absorb should Literacy Orange fail again to meet contract goals. I must re–emphasis the urgency of this matter as inaction will be prejudicial to our Literacy Connections and the consortium as a whole. Any further delay in developing and implementing the proper program and financial safeguards, will only expose the other compliant members of the consortium to unnecessary and heighten scrutiny from ... Algren as a military advisor, the American civil war veteran who have been offered by the Japanese to train the Japanese government army. In this movie, Algren has always been a charming leader. Captain Algren's leading skills are still impressive even when he's in a weak condition. Although Algren is wounded yet he still struggles desperately until he is collapse. Therefore, Algren showed disrespectful attitude to the Japanese Samurai at first and the Japanese consulate. His rudeness during their conversation gave a bad impression to the Japanese. This fact (or maybe this claim) has been proved by the behaviour of the negotiation teams from Megatronics, Tanaka and Eurodata. During the FINS–simulation the different multinational companies (Megatronics and E.T.) pursuit different strategies: While Megatronics was trying to avoid any cooperations with local companies (that also means no employment of capital) agreed E.T. to invest (relative high employment of capital) into Joint Ventures with local firms if the governments give them some safeguards to reduce risks and if it provides some economic support. According to the political and economic situation in Tropicalia and Paradiso the initial position for the government in the negotiations was difficult. The government was supposed to convince multinational companies to invest in the country – that means to chose a market entry mode with capital employment. After the merger of Tanaka and Eurodata to E.T. it became clear in a very early stage of the negotiations that E.T. would be the only company who was willing to invest in foreign markets and would not just try to exploit local advantages without taking any closer relationship to their cooperation partners or the local market. This means that there was no real competition any longer between different companies who wants to invest in the fast growing market of Tropicalia. As only one company was ... • 21. Russia And Japanese Industrialization Analysis In the 1800s, Europe began to industrialize, slowly transitioning from an agricultural to industrial economy. As people began to migrate to cities and factories began pop up all over, along with railroads and telegraphs, the militaries and economic might of these countries began to grow. However, while Europe was busy industrializing, Russia and Japan remained isolated with agriculture–based economies. When Japan's weakness was revealed by the arrival of Commodore Perry with large gunboats and a powerful US Navy, Russia's inferiority was revealed when they decisively lost the Crimean War to the better–equipped European military. Afterward, both resolved to better themselves and modernize like their European counterparts. While Japan and Russia's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast to Russia and Japan, Great Britain's industrialization occurred differently. England was actually the first to industrialize and industrial Great Britain served as a model for Japan's and Russia's later on. Industrialization was a slow, organic process in England started after feudalism but did cause much of the populace to leave their farms and migrate to urban centers, causing the creation of tenements. However, England's industrialization was privately incentivized. Rather than the government creating economic incentives to modernize, England's few natural resources and therefore ambition to take the resources of others caused private capitalists to invest money into building factories and growing industries. And like Japan, England's industrialization was very successful, as the technological advancements and new innovation allowed their superior military to overcome other countries and imperialize, take over new regions. Thus, even though industrialization in different countries around the world did have differences, industrialization as a process that countries go through have similar characteristics. • 25. The Contribution Of Oda Nobunaga's Impact On Japan Hideyoshi under his Daimyo, or feudal lord, Oda Nobunaga, would learn well what it meant to be a samurai. Of course the samurai protected their homes and families, but their true glory came on the battlefield, defending their lord against enemies. Born the son of a daimyo in 1534, Nobunaga's reign though short, had an immense impact on Japan. Lord of Nagoya Castle, he destroyed opposing clans in brilliant campaigns against superior forces. He was the first daimyo general to adopt the newly imported Western muskets. He gradually gained control of the region round the capital Kyoto, which he took in 1568. In 1580, he became master of all central Japan. Nobunaga continued to amass power, but before he could subdue the whole country, he was caught off–guard one night by a rebellious vassal, Akechi Mitsuhide. The life of the most powerful warlord in Japan ended in 1582. Ruthless and feared upon the mere mention of his name, Nobunaga was the first to begin the unification of war–torn Japan. Japanese society respected the samurai as those who had the power to resolve conflicts and "keep the peace". They were therefore entitled to govern the country because of their superior military power and peace–keeping ability. They ruled because of their power, yet they had to also prove their entitlement to do so. This is why legitimation was needed. Becoming a samurai and learning the way of the warrior was dependant on lineal descent. Warriors who were not of direct line ancestry were allowed to be subservient samurai yet were tabooed by the imperial court at ever becoming a shogun, the Great general who ruled over government in feudal Japan. India 's Foreign Direct Investments Despite its deceleration over the past few years, India has become one of the most attractive places to outsource operations for corporations due to several important factors: Its young, well–educated low cost labor (Median age 27, according to the World Fact Book, CIA), the gradual economic liberalization and industry deregulation and their several technical skills are only to mention a few of the characteristics that make, along with China and certain other rising Asian nations, serious candidates for hosting big corporation's foreign direct investments (Ranker, 2014). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Under this system, Nehru sought to strengthen the agricultural and power sectors, providing agriculture 45% and industry 5% of the resource during the first Five–Year Plan. It initially gave India an increase of 3.6% (Exhibit 10a) on its gross domestic product during the first five years. Following this the government isolated the country from foreign investment (as nationalist leaders feared a dependency on it) and trade in an effort to promote domestic production and as a strategy to reduce imports. Since the government had also created a complex system of licensing through the Permit Raj, resources became scarce, the complexity of its bureaucracy fostered corruption and became a reason of delay for companies. This made it hard for other important areas of the country to help increase its economic growth. Also, the government gradually came into possession of most of the private sectors: By 1956, it already had control of commercial banking, oil, insurance and some important resources such as steel and mining. The government, along with the large family conglomerates controlled almost all Indian economy and could arbitrarily choose how each industry would be ran; it regulated the where, the how, the how much and the whether or not a company would be given permission to produce. • 33. Comparing European Feudaism And Japanese Feudalism What is European feudalism and Japanese feudalism? European feudalism involved Kings, knights, and peasants. First the King would give a part of his land to his knights in return the knights would promise loyalty and military aid to the king. Next the knights would grant peasants part of their land and in return the peasants would return loyalty and promise homage. This gave everyone a win win situation for all parties. Japanese feudalism how ever is a little different though. According to chegg study, "Japanese feudalism was organized around a four–tiered social structure, with the samurai warrior class at the top. Below them ranked farmers (including fisherman), and then artisans, with merchants and shopkeepers at the bottom. This hierarchy was due to Confucian ideals, which emphasized the importance of individuals who produced things." Unlike European feudalism farmers were given a higher rank because they put people who produced things on top. Merchants were seen as evil, liars, and greedy therefore they were placed at the bottom. For starters European feudalism started in 800's CE and appeared in Japan in 1100's. European and Japanese feudalism were politically similar and different. For starters they both used the same warfare style and weaponry. According to thoughtco.com, "Both knights and samurai rode horses into battle, used swords and wore armor." The only difference are the materials that each armor is made out of. For knights their armor is full metal which weighs them down while Samurai armor is made of leather or metal plates. The biggest difference we're the disadvantages that knights suffered from heavy armor. According to thoughtco.com, "European knights were almost immobilized by their armor, needing help up on to their horses, from where they would simply try to knock their opponents off their mounts." While the Japanese had a better advantage due to their lightweight armor. According to thoughtco.com, "Samurai, in contrast, wore light–weight armor that allowed for quickness and maneuverability, at the cost of providing much less protection." Even though both are very different each had their of advantages as well the knights were more protected while Samurais were faster. Another major ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Did The Japanese Foreign Crisis In The 17th Century HH1002 Essay Outline CHIN LI–CHENG U1630612C HISTORY T3 Topic The role of Japanese foreign policy in relation to the 17th Century crisis Research Question Did the foreign policy adopted by the Tokugawa Bakufu help Japan to cope with the challenges of the 'general crisis' during the 17th Century, or did it worsen the problems faced by Japan? Hypothesis Hypothesis: The foreign policy adopted by the Tokugawa Bakufu served to help Japan to cope with the challenges of the 'general crisis' during the 17th Century. Null Hypothesis: The foreign policy adopted by the Tokugawa Bakufu did not help Japan to cope with challenges of the 'general crisis' during the 17th Century, and instead served to worsen the situation. Assumptions In this essay, I will agree with certain scholars that there was indeed a 'general crisis' during the 17th Century, where many countries in the world suffered from decline in several aspects such as economy and politics. This 'general crisis' affected Japan as well, although Japan generally fared better than other countries in East Asia during the 17th Century. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, even beyond the Dutch at Nagasaki, Japan actually sought to establish trade and diplomatic relations with its East Asian neighbours such as Korea and Ryukyu. Therefore, in this essay, I will take the foreign policy of Japan during the 17th Century as being a period of controlled contact rather than isolation. I will also avoid using the term sakoku as it implies isolationism, and use the general term foreign policy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When it comes to the concept of chivalry developed during the time of the Crusades in the middle Ages, it began as a code of conduct for the knights. For them, their actions were not solely occasional, but rather a way of life. The key ideals behind chivalry were not intelligible acts that could be performed. Yet, they were about attitudes and virtues that should be owned. The standard of chivalry, nonetheless, had considerably deeper roots. An author of Bloody Constraint, Theodor Meron said, "War and Chivalry in Shakespeare, states that the practitioners of chivalry, the knights, were expected to be cultivated ... In its highest form Politeness approaches love. "Modesty and complaisance, actuated by respect for others‟ feelings, are at the root of politeness"13. Politeness is yet another typical Japanese virtue; however, Nitobe makes sure that it is not a superficial display of adulation but a sincere expression of care and concern for others: "Politeness is a poor virtue, if it is actuated only by a fear of offending good taste, whereas it should be the outward manifestation of a sympathetic regard for the feelings of others. It also implies a due regard for the fitness of things, therefore due respect to social positions"14. He also gives an excellent explanation for the seemingly different practice of gift–giving between the Japanese and Western customs. That is, whereas Westerners present their gifts as wonderful and excellent items, Japanese give theirs saying they are poor and useless ones. • 61. Analysis Of Late Feudalism In Japan Modern Japan with its bright lights, big cities, rich culture, and modern technology makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Despite being considered a modern, developed country, one can argue that it is still dragging behind in terms of social equality. This is the result of grueling efforts to depart from ancient traditional customs, most of which took place only a couple of centuries ago. Even though there is still much to be done, relatively speaking, a thorough analysis of Japanese historical literature illustrates that individualism in Japan has come a long way since the Tokugawa period. Late Feudalism in Japan was characterized by its contradictory nature of being centralized politically while maintaining feudal institutions, thus earning the title of a "centralized feudalist state" (Reischauer, pg. 73 – 74). Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokugawa bakufu, wanted to encourage an era of peace after the constant bloodbath that occurred during the second phase of feudalism in Japan, and this was the basis of most of the changes that distinguish Late Feudalism from the other two phases. The most notable change he implemented was the revival of Confucianism; this resulted in declining rates of crime and violence and a rise in literacy rates, a phenomenon that was based on Confucius' famous phrase, "The gentleman is not a utensil" (Confucian Analects, Handout #1). In terms of individualism, Confucianism encouraged individuals to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The ruling class and officials hoped that this would assist them in their endeavors. Their goals differed between time periods; however, one constant is the mechanism they used to perpetuate their ideology, mythistory. In Tokugawa Japan, they used mythistory to create an ideology based on many religions to justify the social hierarchy the officials created (1 – professor). They then would exchange this rice to merchants for currency (1). However, their means of generating wealth were not stable; harsh weather conditions could severely hamper the output of rice that their peasants could produce. This then decreases the number of tax that the Shogun could levy upon their subjects because there is a limit on how much the Shogun can tax his subordinates before they die from starvation. This caused a dilemma: The Shoguns needed to have an immense amount of disposable wealth to be in a position to afford their lifestyle (1). Thanks to the expense of their lifestyle, they forged loans with merchants, without an understanding of how interest rates worked (1). As a result of their loans, many Shoguns increased the tax they imposed onto their subordinates even though many of them barely had enough food for themselves. Therefore, the luxurious lifestyle of the Shoguns coupled with their unstable income resulted in countless hardships inflicted on their peasants. Many subjects of Shoguns participated in counter–mythistory because of the tribulations forced upon them by the Shoguns due to the social hierarchy and their unsustainable lifestyles. This was possible through the growing supremacy of the ruling class that brought about this change. The country went through many serious transitions during this period. The Origin of The Japanese Values of Precision And Punctuality Introduction Precision and punctuality is believed to be the order of the day in the Japanese society in both workplaces and social settings. Punctuality is highly regarded as an important factor that has contributed to the success of the Japanese economy in global scene. In 2013, the train transport between Osaka and Tokyo recorded an average delay of six seconds only. There is a deep sense of respect for other people's businesses with concerns that such activities should not be interrupted due to lateness. However, the lack of flexibility has been faulted by critics who believe that the Japanese people are too obsessed with time keeping and precision. However, the origin of such values is still unknown to many with questions arising on whether such values existed before industrialization in Japan. The factors that Cirque du Soleil reduced well below the industry's standard are the dependence on the use of animals, individual performers, and the focus on adolescent audiences (Lazenby, 2014). The factors that Cirque du Soleil raised well above the industry's standard were the emphasis on creating a new form of entertainment which is expressed through dance, music, and acrobatic skill; they also focussed on group performances instead of individualistic efforts (Lazenby, 2014). Cirque du Soleil also concentrated on conveying a sense of intellectual sophistication (which is priced at a premium) – especially appealing to adult audiences (Quartz, 2015). The factors that Cirque du Soleil created that the industry has never offered are the introduction of a premium circus (appealing specifically to adults) that do not have any animals (cutting costs immensely and avoiding unfavourable public backlash) and focus specifically on performers with exceptional acrobatic skill in a new form of entertainment that the world has never been able to experience (Quartz, ... Fugality Research Paper The Order Behind Frugality Both Kemmu shikimoku, issued by the Ashikaga bakufu in 1336, and the Code for the Warrior Households, issued by the Tokugawa bafuku in 1615, stipulated that it was indispensable to practice frugality. Both Ashikaga bakufu and Tokugawa bafuku were new regimes when they promulgated these two legal documents. While at first glance, these two legal documents might seem to share similar attitudes toward frugality, in fact, they were different in nature. In this paper, I would like to compare Kemmu shikimoku (1336) and the Code for the Warrior Households (1615), by first closely examining the details of these two frugality laws and then speculating their motivations for issuing the frugality law. In so doing, I wish to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both legal documents resorted to classics and tradition as justification. For instance, in Kemmu shikimoku, the author confessed that he had "selected the teachings of Japan and China, past and present" (Grossberg, 22). Likewise, at the end of the Code for the Warrior Households, it stated that "This is the clear admonition of the wise men of old" (Wm. Theodore et al., 14). Such references to history and tradition were necessary, since both Ashikaga bakufu and Tokugawa bakufu were newly founded, when Kemmu shikimoku and the Code for the Warrior Households were issued respectively. While both regimes solidified their legitimacy by embracing the history, their fundamental governing ideologies had changed. On the one hand, the authors of Kemmu shikimoku still regarded virtue as the most important thing for the government. It said in Kemmu shikimoku that "The [Chinese] classics say that virtue is good government, and government rests in the security of the people. The Shogun should bring a speedy end to the people's suffering." (Grossberg, 16). Therefore, Kemmu shikimoku stipulated the frugality law in order to "bring a speedy end to" poverty that resulted from basara, the "ostentatious display" (Grossberg, 16). Positive And Negative Impact Of Imperialism In Japan Besides changes in political, economic, and social changes, Japan's relations with its neighbors mainly changed after the Meiji Restoration. It has also been mentioned that "a variety of changes in Japanese society, economy, and politics, including the introduction of Western values of civilization and enlightenment, industrialization, abolition of feudalism and establishment of a centralized, constitutional government" (Imperialism). Japan's expansion was, similar to other changes taking place, the result of emulation of and conflict with the Western countries. Japan has had both positive and negative impacts from imperialism politically, culturally, and also economically with women, the lower classes, the educated, and also the businessmen. These aspects were the most "affected" by imperialism and its bringings. Like political rights, money, schools/education, and businesses and imperialism impacted these in both good and bad ways. With the women, they were one of the most "affected" by the impact of imperialism because they had the most changed about what they really did "Women become active participants in public life as workers, consumers, writers, and intellectuals. Interactions with Europeans and Americans inspired many of these changes. Some Japanese thought such moves were necessary for Japan to become part of the modern world. Others were concerned they would lose their own traditions" (Segal). Many of the most productive, yet overlooked, industrial workers were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During the different time periods, from the Jomon period to the Edo period, kimonos have significantly changed from a basic style to a more complex style. Kimonos have more meaning behind each kimono than just style and appearance. Each time period Japan went through is shown through what society wears, acts, and lives as a whole. Kimono is a Japanese word meaning "clothing" but today the word is referred to as traditional Japanese clothing. A kimono is a principal outer garment of a long robe with wide sleeves made with diverse patterns and materials. The different patterns and colors represent Japan's culture during each time period and the heritage of the wearer'. It also represents the different seasons, fall, winter, spring, and summer, as well as special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, funerals, and festivals. • 139. Comparing Japanese And European Codes : Differences And... Today, the world hosts a variety of incredibly diverse regions which span all across the globe. Countries of all sizes and locations share common elements with each other, but have also attained their own unique culture. Two seemingly different places, Japan and Europe, are no exception. Both Japan and Europe were governed under Feudalism for a duration of the past. Despite having the same government system, it is questionable as to whether or not the similarities between the two Feudal societies were more prominent than numerous differences. However, after thorough research, it is clear that the similarities of both Feudal societies were greater than their differences due to the equivalence of the Japanese samurai and the European knights as well as the resemblance of the Code of Bushido to the Code of Chivalry. One similarity between both Feudal societies was the alikeness between the Japanese samurai and the European knights. Both categories of people served as soldiers for the ruler and were raised for their duties from a young age. Samurai began to involve themselves in rigorous physical training and education during childhood, much like knights who began to learn special skills, such as riding a pony, at the age of four or five (Document C). The training for the samurai and knights was very comparable, especially for two distant societies. From birth, their social status had already been determined. It was the connection of the feudalism and capitalism of Japan. For over two hundred years, challenges to Tokugawa authority were few, and this era was known as the time of Great Peace. In general, its appearance for the populace was grateful, because of a period of freedom from the warfare marked Sengoku, from the middle of 15th century to the end of 16th century. During that period, the chain of islands that makes up Japan was ruled by samurai and warlords. During the late sixteenth–century Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and finally Tokugawa Ieyasu took power in succession and finally united the whole Japan. However, the success of Tokugawa ... Although, self– fettered is not a sensible policy for the developing of a country. However, this policy was not so useless at that time, and at least it could help Tokugawa shogunate rule most populace. On one hand, in the early Tokugawa Shogunate, Ieyasu cut off the new thoughts getting into Japan to influence his governing. He had written some letters to the leaders of other countries to reject their thoughts or religions, such as Mexico and Philippines, and emphasized that Shinkoku and Buddhism were the only religions in Japan. From this, we can see that even though he united Japan, people with new thoughts could still shake his rule. For a ruler, people without any disagreement would be easier to control than the people with innovation, and it was clear that Ieyasu tried his best to avoid the latter ... While there are many differences there are perhaps an equal number of similarities between the two works, which offers a converse view of the relationship between them. Oku no Hosomichi is arguably an evolved form of Tosa Nikki as it is reminiscent of the Tosa Nikki in many ways. Also in regards to religion, it is a very distinguishable point that there was a great deal of religion in Oku no Hosomichi which was not present in Tosa Nikki. There are many easily discernable religious themes like impermanence, karma, and even Chinese concepts like yin and yang. This is a key point in looking at the Oku no Hosomichi because of the fact that Matsuo Bashō frequently referenced many famous religious poets like Saigyō. In terms of rhetoric there is an emphasis on the poetry in both works. Much of the poetry in the Tosa Nikki reflects grief and tragedy which complements the overall theme of the work. Alternately, the Oku no Hosomichi has poetry that focuses on nature and distinguishes itself in its more blatant and somewhat vulgar advances. The poetry of the Tosa Nikki was also placed towards the occasion as an accompaniment and while the poetry of Oku no Hosomichi was also in accompaniment to the situation, Bashō many times also included the back story to the poem in detail. It is also important to note that the Tosa Nikki was written in a combination of prose and the more traditional waka, while the Oku no Hosomichi was written in both prose and haiku.
