Analysis Of Pinocchio In A Thousand Splendid Sunss
The novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, tells the heartbreaking tale of a woman
in the middle–east, the hardships she must face, and the various social dynamics she encounters. The
film Pinocchio is mentioned or alluded to in the beginning and in the end of the novel. The classic
1940's film, Pinocchio, details the adventures of a wooden puppet, the creation of an old and lonely
woodworker, for whom the film is titled after who is turned into a "real boy" by a magical fairy.
Pinocchio must prove his worth in order to fully transition into a human child. Unfortunately, he is
often led astray by his habitual lying, at which point his nose grows, and when he is taken to
Pleasure Island, a land filled with mischievous and immoral young boys, by a manipulative man. In
A Thousand Splendid Suns, the film Pinocchio is symbolic of the main character, Mariam, and her
father's relationship, and it also serves as a milestone to mark the beginning and end of this touching
narrative. The first instance the film is mentioned in the novel, a very young Mariam tells her father,
"[for her birthday] I want you to take me to your cinema, I want to see the cartoon. I want to see the
puppet boy." (Hosseini 47). One can imagine the childlike purity of such an innocent request, to
fulfill it would cost nothing, and to deny it would show a severe lack of empathy. Regardless, Nana,
Mariam's mother, replies coldly and ambiguously with "That's not a good idea." (47). To this, Jalil,

Critical Analysis Of Shrek
`Shrek' is the ultimate fractured fairy tale, a film that manages to simultaneously honor and lampoon
the conventions of its genre without becoming smug or condescending in the process. For while it is
sardonic, `Shrek' is never cynical, so confident and assured are its makers in establishing and
maintaining just the right tone for a revisionist exercise such as this one. The film certainly conveys
a modern sensibility, yet it is a gentle sort of iconoclasm that allows us to enjoy the more
conventional aspects of the story (the happily–ever–after ending, for example) even as we are
laughing at the obvious absurdities contained within them.
The revisionism begins with Shrek himself, as unromantic a figure as has ever earned the title of
`hero' in a fairy tale adventure. For Shrek is an ogre, plain and simple, an ugly, cranky, decidedly
standoffish beast who wants nothing more than to rid his swamp of all the classic fairy tale figures
(Pinocchio, the Three Little Pigs, The Three Bears, The Three Blind Mice et al), who have been
consigned there by the dastardly Lord Farquaad, who is attempting to purge his land of all those
bothersome folkloric personalities. To earn the deed to his land and thereby have authority to evict
the squatters, Shrek agrees to go in search of the beautiful Princess Fiona, rescue her from her
dragon–guarded castle, and bring her back for Lord Farquaad to marry (thereby earning the latter the
legitimate title of Prince of the Land). Of course, every

Short Story : 'The Adventures Of Pinocchio'
I stand looking at myself at the mirror, wondering will things get better? Now that the war is finally
over, will father come home? We haven't received any letters from him, ever since the war started. I
take mother's old scissors from when she used to cut my hair, and begin to contemplate. Then I have
decided, and in a few snips my long, blond hair is gone. My hair is now up to my shoulders. I hear
mother reading to my little brother, Maxwell, upstairs. She always reads him the same story, The
Adventures of Pinocchio, which was given to her by my grandparents just like this old Oklahoma
farmhouse. My mother always comforted me with that book, but now that I am nine she thinks I am
old enough to fall asleep without her. Although, I still long for her and my father's comfort, when
they would hug me and kiss me to bed every night, before the war. I crawl back up into my bed with
my red, long sleeve pajamas on, and faintly hear mother creaking down the hall. You can hear the
floorboards creaking, they never got fixed to due to the war. She comes in my room and whispers,
"Goodnight Marley, I love you." She feels my hair, and I whisper back, "Night Mother, I love you."
As I walk my brother to our small school house in our dirty light blue overalls that haven't been
washed in days, we have to dodge out of the way of a trolley that comes flying by. Hopefully, in the
future cars will be more common. Ones that stay on the road and are aware of children, so they

Compare 10 Things I Hate About You And The Taming Of The...
We see many modern things such as, movies, plays, lifestyles that are linked to the past. How are the
modern times related to and linked to the past life? The things we watch and see these days are
usually evolved from a previous idea in the past. There are many examples of modernized
adaptation and movies that were based on or inspired by an idea from the past. Some examples can
be "20th Century Oz" which is a modernized version of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", "Artificial
Intelligence" that is a self–referential form of "The Adventures of Pinocchio", "She's The Man" is
based on "Twelfth Night", and "The Lion King" which is based on "Hamlet". Most modernized
movies are inspired by Shakespeare's work and the reason for that is because Shakespeare's ... Show

Since "10 Things I Hate About You" is a modern adaptation of "The Taming of the Shrew" the
characters share similar personalities and even names. First, they have the same main characters.
Kathrine Minola in "The Taming of the Shrew" and Kat Stratford from "10 Things I Hate About
You" are both women who are very rude, harsh and are sometimes violent. From their personalities,
it is obvious that both are the "shrew" in the play and the movie, which means they are
argumentative and ill–tempered. Kat is more verbally abusive while Kathrine is physically abusive.
Although they are seen and viewed as "shrews", Kat is more like an opinionated woman who
believes in what she thinks and is not afraid to say it. Petruchio and Patrick Verona, loved which is
from the movie "10 Things I Hate About You", are the suitors for Kat and Kathrine. Although in "10
Things I Hate About You" Kat and Patrick did fall in love but Petruchio and Kathrine did not love
each other, their relationship was mostly about the money that was given by Bapista to Petruchio.
The difference is also the age. In "10 Things I Hate About You" they are all high–school students
while in "The Taming of the Shrew" they are of marrying age. Then there is Lucentio, Cameron in
"10 Things I Hate About You". They both like Bianca, Bianca Minola in "The Taming of the Shrew"
which are Kat/Kathrine's sisters. Cameron was not very confident to go to Bianca and talk to her
when he first saw her. Lucintio in the other hand was a man with high–self esteem. An example of a
quote said by Lucintio about Bianca is "O Tranio, till I found it to be true, I never thought it possible
or likely. But see, while idly I stood looking on, I found the effect of love in idleness And now in
plainness do confess to thee That art to me as secret and as dear As Anna to the Queen of

Analysis Of Pinocchio
The stasis of Pinocchio is introduced when the movie opens with a small personificated "cricket"
named Jiminy sitting in a library starts singing "When You Wish Upon A Star" and tells us that he
never believed in wishes coming true. In this fairy tale world, Jiminy is given characteristics of a
human being by being able to stand on two legs and having two arms. Jiminy also has the ability to
run, walk, jump and talk like a human being. After telling us that he never believed in wishes
coming true, Jiminy opens a fairy tale book titled Pinocchio, and tells us the story of Pinocchio that
makes him believe otherwise. As Jiminy tells us the story, the camera zooms into the first page of
the book and shows us a quiet, small, and unnamed village during a beautiful night with stars
shining like diamonds over the town. As Jiminy wanders around the quiet streets, there isn't a single
person to be seen and it seemed like a ghost town. The only sign of life is a lively window where
lights could be seen in the shop of a woodcarver named Geppetto. This intrigues Jiminy to sneak his
way through a tiny door crack in Geppetto's house, which is located near the middle of this unnamed
village, and everything seems happy and peaceful/in order. Being a woodcarver, Geppetto's works of
puppetry, dolls and other wooden toys/furnitures can be seen all inside his house and he has a pet cat
named Figaro and a pet fish named Cleo. Geppetto just carved a puppet named Pinocchio and before

ouUnpopular yet magical and organized film The title of the fantasy–adventure film is Arabian
Nights. It was released on the 30th of april in the year 2000. It was directed by a British director,
Steve Barron. He is the same director of the movies Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), The
Adventures of Pinocchio (1996) and other fantastic movies. The movie was produced by 6
producers. Namely, Peter Barnes, Howard ––, Robert H–and––. There are 2 main characters in the
film. – Avital is charming as Scheherezade and Dougray Scott is amazing as Sultan Shahryar. And
the rest of the supporting actors did a great job in portraying their characters in the film. The 3 hour

It will let you ride in an emotional rollercoaster because it will touch your heart, make you laugh,
make you think and more! I'll definitely recommend everyone to watch this film. It's because it is
suitable for all ages. One thing that I think viewers won't appreciate in the film is that its way too
long and it's hard to catch up with the movie. For a busy person who doesn't have enough free time,
it's going to be hard for them to watch a 175 minute long movie. But still, this film isn't just for your
past time because you will learn lessons that are applicable in real life. You just have to look for it
deeper or understand the movie even more. Also, another thing that is not good in this movie is that
I had a hard time understanding their dialogues because of their accent and the sound isn't that loud.
And lastly, it is really worth watching because it's not a common kind of film for us living in the
21st century so it'll really make you step out of your comfort zone and appreciate the old kinds of

The Adventures of Pinocchio
In 1883, the Italian author Carlo Collodi published the book "The Adventures of Pinocchio"
narrating the story of a marionette named Pinocchio and his father Geppetto. The story starts in
Tuscany when Geppetto, a poor and old carpenter, after receiving a talking piece of pinewood from
his neighbor Master Cherry, decides to carve it into a boy named Pinocchio. When Geppetto finishes
his work on the piece of wood, Pinocchio's adventures begin. Geppetto is willing to sacrifice
everything he has, including his coat, to provide for his son, however, Pinocchio doesn't act like a
mature and loving son. Indeed, the mischievous puppet will face many challenges that will separate
him from his father and turn him into a prisoner, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Geppetto carves his arms, legs, and his unique nose, Pinocchio's struggles begin. Indeed, we
can say that life is the call to adventure for Pinocchio. Consequently, since every adventure includes
the thresholds that imply dangers, Pinocchio must face life and all the struggles that come with it.
The first threshold for Pinocchio arrives on his first day of school when he decides to sell his school
book to attend Mangiafuoco's puppet show. This decision will determine a series of events that will
result in the separation of Pinocchio from his father Geppetto, and consequently the beginning of the
adventure in which he will constantly need allies. Indeed, after leaving the puppet show, and after
the meeting with the Cat and the Fox, Pinocchio will encounter his bigger helper: the Fairy with
turquoise hair. Joseph Campbell describes the meeting with the supernatural aid as essential for the
success of the hero (57). Indeed, throughout the story, the Fairy, who behaves as the proper helper,
will always save Pinocchio when he is in the most deplorable and hopeless conditions, and she will
always look after the wooden boy while he is facing the difficulties of his journey. In this fairytale,
the meeting with the helper can also coincide with another element of the hero's journey: the
meeting with the goddess. Indeed, many attributed divine powers to this enchanted character,
proving the divine nature of the Fairy. However, the Fairy is like a mother for Pinocchio, and she is
also present in the form of a blue goat when Pinocchio is swallowed by the tremendous Dogfish.
This event is extremely important to explain and prove the universal path idealized by Campbell in
his book. Indeed, one of the thresholds to overcome, in Campbell's opinion, is the belly of the
whale, in which the hero will forge his character (Gauch). In Collodi's book, this process of descent

Analysis Of Peter Pan
Discovering that every child has to grow up at some point of time is the main idea or purpose behind
the famous story of "Peter Pan." Though there are different versions of the story, each one generally
has the same outcome. Analyzing two different interpretations of "Peter Pan", the Disney illusion
and the original, by James M. Barrie, it is to be learned that the Disney animation simply brings the
story to life, adds a different outlook on it as opposed to simple olden version. With new color,
animation and modern day thought the Disney story creates a different playing of "Peter Pan".
In Disney's version of "Peter Pan", Disney left out many gruesome facts in their version of the story.
In the original "Peter Peter" by, James M. Barrie in 1904, Peter was a young boy who lived amidst
fairies and would escort dead children half of the way to wherever they need to go. One night, Mrs.
Darling sees Peter in the nursery, contrast to the cartoon where the parents are not important
characters, and she is able to catch his shadow, roll it up, and hold it in a drawer so that she can
attempt to catch the boy. She barely remembers this boy from stories told when she was younger.
When Peter returns for his shadow when the parents are away, he mistakenly awakes Wendy. He
tells Wendy about Neverland and the Lost Boys, who happen to be young babies in which had fallen
out of their carriages and were sadly never found again. Wendy along with her brothers fly with

We Are All Familiar With Bible Stories And Fairy Tales
We are all familiar with Bible stories and fairy tales. They typically began as verbal stories, passed
down from generation to generation, before they were put down on paper or made into a film.
Stories which use outlandish situations to, ideally, teach the readers how to live as good people.
Stories such as Cinderella, The Three Little Pigs, Snow White, Jonah and the Whale, Noah 's Ark,
Hansel and Gretel, and The Adventures of Pinocchio include situations which could not have
possibly happened. These stories may help lull children to sleep but, at the same time, teach morals
in a harsh or even violent manner. Like fairy tales, the Bible was written to teach stories to
impressionable minds. Unlike fairy tales, Bible stories are still read today, they are not only read by
children, but by adults with or without children. Many Christians today will argue that the Bible
stories, such as Jonah and the Whale, Noah 's Ark, Adam and Eve, and such, were not written to take
literally. If they are correct in assuming those stories are not literal encounters, then how would
someone venturing through the bible know what to take literally and what to take as the word of
God? If the stories of the Bible were never meant to be accepted as real events, then can they be
considered fairy tales? If all stories in the bible are, in fact, the word of God and meant to be taken
literal, then scientists need to re–evaluate almost everything they know about the world and how it
works. It is

Fairy Tales Morals
A story always has a meaning or lesson it teaches. Fairy tales are stories with the addition of a
magical element. They, too, have meanings the reader is supposed to take away. Authors
purposefully fill their tales with symbols and characters that are meant to represent something. The
meanings could be intending to teach societal values or rules. There are infinite interpretations one
could potentially perceive from a single story. Likewise, a study from Cedarville University states,
"the Bible is similar to fairy tales in that one can take several meanings from the same passage and
interpret it differently depending on that individual's stage in life" (Foulkrod). Fairy tales with
authors that are notably religious recognized the similarity between Bible teachings and fairy tales
and often use religious symbols and themes to compliment the overall moral the story is trying to
portray. Many of these tales also have meanings and moral takeaways that represent religious
values. This can be seen in the works of the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, as well as
Carlo Collodi. Religion is very prominent in the works of the Brothers Grimm. Their upbringing can
be attributed to the Reformed Christian elements they reference in their stories. Jacob Grimm notes
his Reformed faith as one of his earliest memories in his autobiography (Murphy 46), and Wilhelm
openly talks about his memories from church in his own autobiography as well (Murphy 50). G.

Shrek's Impact On Society And Symbolic Interactionism
As Shrek was judged, we are as humans judged today. This is true for anything we do. Whether
politics, television, or social media, it still defines how society and the individual will behave. See
through everything society does, no matter the period of time, social interaction was navigated
through words, and symbols. Which over time developed an emotional meaning, which are
projected thru action or behaviour today. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of Symbolic
Interactionism is "a theory that human interaction and communication is facilitated by words,
gestures, and other symbols that have acquired conventionalized meanings", with this definition one
can assume that the interactionist perspective is based around communication that is made easier, by
things like words, gestures and symbols, so that they can gain the artistic meaning that will
eventually make an effect ("symbolic interactionism"). Those who study the interactionist
perspective often take every day social conversation and they use that to explain society, instead of
taking the grand scheme of everything in its entirety and using that to explain a large societal area in
its entirety. In the movie Shrek, the symbolism of each interaction has a deeper meaning somewhere
down the road. For instance, Shrek losing his swamp leads to him going to Lord Farquaad. This in
turn meeting Donkey and other fairy–tale creatures, and then going to save Fiona. This adventure,
down the road of course, leads to him getting a wife and friends.
When Shrek first meet the fairy tale creatures, he was about to start his quest to talk to the great lord
Farquaad. The fairy tale creatures, who were all imprisoned and banished to Shrek's swamp by lord
Farquaad from his kingdom, all came to Shrek's swamp. This led to many friendships being formed,
intricate and even direct relationships were formed. The fairy–tale creatures who came to Shrek's
swamp in the first place were ginger bread man named Gingy, the "big bad wolf", named Wolfie,
Pinocchio, 3 blind mice and 3 little pigs. While Shrek, Gingy and Pinocchio are closer in
relationship with a more intricate relationship, the rest of the gang mentioned were not that close to
Shrek. The symbols behinds all their

Understanding Disability: A Study of Sharon M Draper's Out Of My Mind

Abstract: This paper endeavours to demonstrate, how application of contemporary ideas about
disability to recent literary writings that portray children, give new dimensions to the idea of
disability. It provides the experiences faced by the children with disabilities within the contexts of
family and society with special reference to the contemporary fiction Out Of My Mind by Sharon M

Key Words: Disability, contemporary children's fiction. Disability is often seen as a disadvantage
which does not allow a person to do certain tasks or actions which are part of everyday life. Ronald

The other children look down upon the "special group" and make them think that they are not
empowered. Society's ableism constantly makes the children with disabilities to think of what they
lack not of what they have. The text raises the question "what is normal?"(90). This false construct
by the society leads to the mistreatment of Melody. The society refuses to accept her for who she is.
The inclusion classes thus become not truly inclusive, but keep some children separate. When
Melody won the quiz in the class, no one believes her capability other than her personal teacher
Catherine. So, the society makes her disabled by not accepting her talents. Melody's inclusion to the
quiz team becomes a problem for the others because they do not see her as an ordinary girl who has
extreme intelligence. Giving reward to the child with disability, which is a common trope in
disability narratives (Solis, 1), can be seen in this novel as well. During the TV show, Melody
becomes the centre of attraction and everyone's focus was on her. Melody herself says: "Our Team

Grimm's Fairy Tales
I chose to research the genre of fairy tales, specifically the ones written and told by the Grimm
brothers. Fairy tales took shape in sixteenth century Italy as literature for adults. They are known to
be children's stories about magical and imaginary beings in wonderful lands. They can also be
described as a fabricated story, especially one intended to deceive the mind. It typically features

Fairy tales have always appealed to the young and old, and they play an important role in a child's
life. Fairy tales play an important role in a child's life because many fairy tales have a female as the
main character, or they play a very important role. "The lead characters of fairy tales, perhaps
because they were originally told by groups of females, are women" (Neikirk, par. 9). Some of the
stories with strong female roles that were written by the Grimm brothers include "Cinderella",
"Little Snow White" and "Rapunzel". Cinderella was a sweet and innocent young woman who had
to do what her evil stepmother and stepsisters told her to. She was strong and was eventually
rewarded while her sisters are punished with blindness for their wickedness. Snow White runs away
to the forest to not be killed by the Queen. Rapunzel does not fear the wicked woman that keeps her
locked in the tower for all of those years. Women were the ones that did most of the story telling
back then, so it makes sense that they would be the main characters. "Fairy tales have never been
bedtime stories; in this day and age, they have morphed into a very effective means of exercising
power over women and maintaining gender inequality" (Neikirk, par. 1). Women have always
played important roles in society, and the fact that they play main roles in these stories empowers
them even more.

Walt Disney's Impact On American Society
Walt Disney once said, " You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the

people loved the characters. People wanted to go see the characters and interact with them. So
Disney created a place where it was possible for people to do that (Beattie). This suggests that
viewers wanted to spend time with the characters they watched at home. Disney had a great idea to
turn his shows into an amusement park, which attracted a lot of people. At the same time, Disney
used his T.V. show to advertise his amusement park. "By 1954, Disney had recognized the growing
popularity of television and produced a series called Disneyland, which he initially used to promote
his new Disneyland theme park in California" (Lackmann). This maintains that Disney was a smart
and bright person who knew how to be successful. Additionally, Disney wanted to create a homelike
atmosphere at his park. "Disneyland put a new spin on amusement parks when its gates opened in

Pinocchio Essay
Introduction:
Pinocchio is one of the most celebrated works in Italian literature. It was written by Carlo Lorenzi in
1883. Like many other writers in Italy at that time he wrote it under a pseudonym Carlo Collodi.
Collodi himself was a firm believer in education and one of his main goals was to educate young
people, at one point declaring. "Open a school, and you will close a prison"(Collodi in Person, p
141).
His novel about Pinocchio continually portrays the virtues of education and the evils of sloth. When
Pinocchio tries to avoid school and disobeys his father by running away, he suffers many
misfortunes as being abducted, jailed or transformed in to a donkey. But when he obeys what
Geppetto tells him, works at his studies, he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and confusing it can be. It showed that Pinocchio must first learn to overcome temptations control
his desires through a self discipline and educate before he can achieve his goal.
The story: Promote educational process:
From the begging of the story we see Pinocchio being very naughty he plays pranks upon the kindly
wood carver Geppetto "he noticed that these eyes moved and then stared fixedly at him. Geppetto,
seeing this, felt insulted and said in a grieved tone: "Ugly wooden eyes, why do you stare so?" Next
he made the mouth. No sooner was it finished than it began to laugh and poke fun at him. "Stop
laughing!" said Geppetto angrily"" (Adventures of Pinocchio. Chapter 3)
In Chapter 4 of the book, cricket been introduced to readers. As Lawson Lucas writes "The Talking
Cricket enters the story to give overt expression to the moral frame, as well as to the practical
disadvantage of being bad"() "Woe to boys who refuse to obey their parents and run away from
home! They will never be happy in this world, and when they are older they will be very sorry for
it" (Adventures of Pinocchio. Chapter 4) Furthermore, Cricket makes it clear that naughty boys
cannot bear to be corrected, as Pinocchio does not pay no attention at all to anything he been
advised.

Ellen Narrative
Ellen and I were growing up and along with getting older, came more responsibility and even some
independence. By now, our mother trusted us to walk to town unaccompanied to pick up a few
groceries, happy to do so, we carried our willow shopping basket, money in one hand and a grocery
list in the other, with a note to give to the store clerk who would gather the required items for us. We
felt so grown up as we walked to the Abtsweg together, not in a group as we did when we walked to
school with our friends, but just the two of us; my sister and I, wearing matching brown coats and
perfectly starched bows in our hair. When we returned home and proudly handed Mom the basket
filled with all the correct items, she praised us endlessly and when Ted's parents phoned, boasted
about our accomplishment. They too, were pleased and realized that Ellen and I were growing up.
One afternoon, during an unexpected visit from Opa Taco and Oma Tine, our presence downstairs
was requested when they rang the doorbell upon their arrival. Wondering what was going on, Ellen
and I hurried to the street level to find our grandparents standing in the common entryway, holding

theme parks, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Disneyland Shanghai. While, Japan and Paris only hold
one theme park, Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris. Each new Disney park strives to be

Examples Of Archetypes In The Odyssey
Adam and Eve, the first people on earth according to the bible, were tempted a lot by the snake or
the devil. One of the tricks that Satan had used was on Eve. God had warned adam and Eve not to
eat the one fruit off of the one tree. While eve was out she had went by the tree, and a snake caught
her attention. This snake turned out to be the devil, and had told Eve to just get a taste of the fruit.
Eve was curious and she took a bite. Now god was after Adam and Eve. They tried to hid behind a
bush from god but god had found them, and then they repented. In Homer's epic entitled The

For example most men have a hard time with sexual temptations as Rick Thomas says. He

Imagine if the Little Mermaid, Ariel, had her tongue cut out instead of her voice taken away, or

People always believed in happy endings; Cinderella getting her prince, Sleeping Beauty waking up

you need to know the original stories; the difference, the similarities and the influence they had on
people.
To begin with, the older and the modern versions of fairy tales differ greatly. For example, Sleeping

First, Rapunzel was used as an impact on woman and young girls of the Christian community. The
story was about a girl getting pregnant and being left alone by a prince who wanted nothing to do
with her. This fairy tale was used as a cautionary tale of the dangers of seduction to the ladies, young
and old, of the communities. Second, Mulan, the new version, was used as a way to bring feminism
on a big rise. She was not looking for a way to get a prince, but she was trying to keep her dad from
fighting in a war even though he was injured. Mulan was unlike any princess anyone had ever seen
and it amazed woman and young girls everywhere to take control and become equal to men.
(Weebly) Lastly, the new version of Cinderella was actually used as an anti–feminism story.

push to put women back into their supposed place...Rather than make her own dreams come true, he
said, Cinderella waits for others, such as her fairy godmother, to do the work for her, and trusts that
things will turn out right." (Melanson, 2012) These fairy tales really do show different impacts of

"messy hair and hairy chins" – and perhaps even offending mustaches. One difference from
California or Florida: Parts of Main Street and waiting areas to get into the attractions will be

Summary Of Pinnocchio And The God Of Small Things
The Oxford Dictionary defines a 'bildungsroman' as 'A novel that has as its main theme the
formative years or spiritual education of one person', and in this essay, I am going to prove that both
Carlo Collodi's 'The Adventures of Pinocchio' (1883) (hereafter referred to as 'Pinocchio') and
Arundhati Roy's 'The God of Small Things' (1997) are both bildungsromans. To prove this argument
is correct, I will: concentrate on the experiences of the children within Roy's work (Estha, Sophie
Mol, and Rahel), focus on the responses from other characters to Pinocchio's choices to form a
judgement as to whether the children in the selected texts do positively develop or regress in their
education, and analyse the narrative style of the two aforementioned texts.
It is important to consider that whilst 'The God of Small Things' was written in a third person
omniscient narrative, 'Pinocchio' was written in a third person limited narrative, and both narratives
enable the reader to clearly understand the motives behind the actions and decisions of the
characters. Both Richard Wunderlich and Thomas J. Morrissey argue that 'Pinocchio' 'for adults, he
had written successful political commentary and satire' whilst 'For children, he had translated fairy
tales and written school textbooks' (pg. 5). Therefore, it depends on the reader's age which
influences whether they believe that Pinocchio learns or does not, since 'Pinocchio' can be regarded
as a 'school textbook' or a 'fairy tale'. Wunderlich

Peter Pan had originally belonged to the author, J.M Berrie. Peter Pan starred in his book "The Little
White Bird," where he was only prominent within a few chapters of the book as an infant. Peter Pan
was originally going to be a villain, that would kidnap children through the night by their windows.
This was the idea for the play " Peter Pan," or " The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up," (Moss). Berrie
ended up adding all the characters like Wendy, Captain Hook , and Tinkerbell into the novel called
"Peter Pan and Wendy," making it to where Peter was no longer the villain anymore. And the story
was still very dark and morbid, since Captain Hook was only meant to be a distraction while the
crew changed the scenery. And in one of the most famous lines from the novel, " To die would be an
awfully big adventure would make the boy courageous and valiant (Moss). And when Disney had
found the original story, he had decided to change it up. People had interpreted that Neverland was
only a place where the sick children of the past would go into their minds, and that Peter never grew
up only because he was already deceased. So instead of making Peter an infant, Disney had changed
him into a teenage boy, and took out a lot of Berrie's sinister traits. And gave him the spunk of what
the kids were thought to of had in that time frame. He made this more safe for children, to give them

Essay About Fairy Tales
Introduction As a child, I am fond of fairy tales. In fact, my night would not be complete without my
mother reading me a fairy tale story before going to sleep. One of my favorite fairy tale stories, for
instance, is the story of Aladdin. As a child, it amazes me to think that I have a genie friend who can
give me anything I want. I was thinking about wishing for a castle full of chocolates and goodies
and imagine myself riding that magic carpet while sneaking up on the houses of my friends. Fairy
tales gave me wonderful experience as a child, which I believe enhanced my creativity and
imagination. Some fairy tales are meant to give children life's lessons while others are purely for
entertainment purposes. In my young age, I do not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some scholars believe that as soon as humans were able to speak, they might have already
formulated their own version of fairy tales in their story telling (Evolution of Storytelling and Fairly
Tales, n.d.). Apparently, fairy tales are deeply embedded in human culture that it can be found even
in the earliest writings of the Aryans and the Hindus (Bunce, 1878). The early Greeks' Iliad and
Odyssey as well as the early Anglo–Saxons' Beowulf are just a few examples of folk tales that have
been told until today. Although these stories are not meant for children, these folk tales laid the
foundations of today's modern fairy tales (Anderson, 2006). Most likely, every culture has their own
version of fairy tale, which could have evolved from the folk tales of their ancient pasts. Modern
fairy tales combines the elements of fables and fantasy in order to instruct moral values. Among the
most common are Snow White, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beasts, The Frog Prince, Pinocchio and
many other fairy tales of such genre, which highlights moral values such as goodness, loyalty and
honesty. On the other hand, some modern fairy tales such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland are
purely entertaining without the need for moral emphasis (Anderson,

Pinocchio; A Story For Children Pinocchio is concidered an adventurous tale for children. The
original story was first published in 1881 by Carlo Collodi in Italy . Collodi published his
masterpiece as a serial story in a children's weekly paper, Giornale dei bambini, between 1881 and
1883 (Liukkonen, 2008). Collodi wrote the story to be a lively adventure for children and a very
adult social critique, attacking poverty and emphasising the importance of education (Liukkonen,
2008). Walt Disney adapted the story in 1940, lightened it up some and proceeded to make a ...

They personify conscience and discipline, which Pinocchio lacks at first. The Blue Fairy is
illuminated in the pictures representing her magical and mystical qualities. Jiminy Cricket is the
annoying voice of discipline always warning Pinocchio to heed his advice.
The tale takes place in an Italian village, initially in Geppetto's workshop which is full of wooden
gadgets and chiming clocks, yet he does not know what time it is. The gentle woodcarver is wishing
upon a star for the puppet to come to life and to be his son. The Blue Fairy brings the toy to life out
of compassion for Geppetto who is a good man, but is lonely and wanting someone to love. The
puppet named, Pinocchio, is not yet a human boy. He must earn the right to be real by proving that
he is brave, truthful, and unselfish (The Walt Disney Company, 1992). It is not an easy world for the
puppet. He must learn what it means to be a good person, including: going to school, working hard,
making friends and putting others' needs before his own. In the end, after learning some important
life lessons, Pinocchio is transformed from the wooden puppet into the real boy Geppetto has always
wanted (The Walt Disney Company, 1992).
One important event in the story is when Pinocchio is confronted by the Blue Fairy about skipping
school to be in a puppet show. She asks him why he never went to school and he lies to her and says
that he was kidnapped by a

Analysis Of Pinocchio In A Thousand Splendid Sunss

  • 1. Analysis Of Pinocchio In A Thousand Splendid Sunss The novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, tells the heartbreaking tale of a woman in the middle–east, the hardships she must face, and the various social dynamics she encounters. The film Pinocchio is mentioned or alluded to in the beginning and in the end of the novel. The classic 1940's film, Pinocchio, details the adventures of a wooden puppet, the creation of an old and lonely woodworker, for whom the film is titled after who is turned into a "real boy" by a magical fairy. Pinocchio must prove his worth in order to fully transition into a human child. Unfortunately, he is often led astray by his habitual lying, at which point his nose grows, and when he is taken to Pleasure Island, a land filled with mischievous and immoral young boys, by a manipulative man. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, the film Pinocchio is symbolic of the main character, Mariam, and her father's relationship, and it also serves as a milestone to mark the beginning and end of this touching narrative. The first instance the film is mentioned in the novel, a very young Mariam tells her father, "[for her birthday] I want you to take me to your cinema, I want to see the cartoon. I want to see the puppet boy." (Hosseini 47). One can imagine the childlike purity of such an innocent request, to fulfill it would cost nothing, and to deny it would show a severe lack of empathy. Regardless, Nana, Mariam's mother, replies coldly and ambiguously with "That's not a good idea." (47). To this, Jalil, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Critical Analysis Of Shrek `Shrek' is the ultimate fractured fairy tale, a film that manages to simultaneously honor and lampoon the conventions of its genre without becoming smug or condescending in the process. For while it is sardonic, `Shrek' is never cynical, so confident and assured are its makers in establishing and maintaining just the right tone for a revisionist exercise such as this one. The film certainly conveys a modern sensibility, yet it is a gentle sort of iconoclasm that allows us to enjoy the more conventional aspects of the story (the happily–ever–after ending, for example) even as we are laughing at the obvious absurdities contained within them. The revisionism begins with Shrek himself, as unromantic a figure as has ever earned the title of `hero' in a fairy tale adventure. For Shrek is an ogre, plain and simple, an ugly, cranky, decidedly standoffish beast who wants nothing more than to rid his swamp of all the classic fairy tale figures (Pinocchio, the Three Little Pigs, The Three Bears, The Three Blind Mice et al), who have been consigned there by the dastardly Lord Farquaad, who is attempting to purge his land of all those bothersome folkloric personalities. To earn the deed to his land and thereby have authority to evict the squatters, Shrek agrees to go in search of the beautiful Princess Fiona, rescue her from her dragon–guarded castle, and bring her back for Lord Farquaad to marry (thereby earning the latter the legitimate title of Prince of the Land). Of course, every ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Short Story : 'The Adventures Of Pinocchio' I stand looking at myself at the mirror, wondering will things get better? Now that the war is finally over, will father come home? We haven't received any letters from him, ever since the war started. I take mother's old scissors from when she used to cut my hair, and begin to contemplate. Then I have decided, and in a few snips my long, blond hair is gone. My hair is now up to my shoulders. I hear mother reading to my little brother, Maxwell, upstairs. She always reads him the same story, The Adventures of Pinocchio, which was given to her by my grandparents just like this old Oklahoma farmhouse. My mother always comforted me with that book, but now that I am nine she thinks I am old enough to fall asleep without her. How are the modern times related to and linked to the past life? The things we watch and see these days are usually evolved from a previous idea in the past. There are many examples of modernized adaptation and movies that were based on or inspired by an idea from the past. Some examples can be "20th Century Oz" which is a modernized version of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", "Artificial Intelligence" that is a self–referential form of "The Adventures of Pinocchio", "She's The Man" is based on "Twelfth Night", and "The Lion King" which is based on "Hamlet". Since "10 Things I Hate About You" is a modern adaptation of "The Taming of the Shrew" the characters share similar personalities and even names. First, they have the same main characters. Kathrine Minola in "The Taming of the Shrew" and Kat Stratford from "10 Things I Hate About You" are both women who are very rude, harsh and are sometimes violent. From their personalities, it is obvious that both are the "shrew" in the play and the movie, which means they are argumentative and ill–tempered. Kat is more verbally abusive while Kathrine is physically abusive. Although they are seen and viewed as "shrews", Kat is more like an opinionated woman who believes in what she thinks and is not afraid to say it. Petruchio and Patrick Verona, loved which is from the movie "10 Things I Hate About You", are the suitors for Kat and Kathrine. Although in "10 Things I Hate About You" Kat and Patrick did fall in love but Petruchio and Kathrine did not love each other, their relationship was mostly about the money that was given by Bapista to Petruchio. The difference is also the age. In "10 Things I Hate About You" they are all high–school students while in "The Taming of the Shrew" they are of marrying age. Then there is Lucentio, Cameron in "10 Things I Hate About You". They both like Bianca, Bianca Minola in "The Taming of the Shrew" which are Kat/Kathrine's sisters. Cameron was not very confident to go to Bianca and talk to her when he first saw her. Lucintio in the other hand was a man with high–self esteem. An example of a quote said by Lucintio about Bianca is "O Tranio, till I found it to be true, I never thought it possible or likely. But see, while idly I stood looking on, I found the effect of love in idleness And now in plainness do confess to thee That art to me as secret and as dear As Anna to the Queen of ... • 11. Analysis Of Pinocchio The stasis of Pinocchio is introduced when the movie opens with a small personificated "cricket" named Jiminy sitting in a library starts singing "When You Wish Upon A Star" and tells us that he never believed in wishes coming true. In this fairy tale world, Jiminy is given characteristics of a human being by being able to stand on two legs and having two arms. Jiminy also has the ability to run, walk, jump and talk like a human being. After telling us that he never believed in wishes coming true, Jiminy opens a fairy tale book titled Pinocchio, and tells us the story of Pinocchio that makes him believe otherwise. As Jiminy tells us the story, the camera zooms into the first page of the book and shows us a quiet, small, and unnamed village during a beautiful night with stars shining like diamonds over the town. As Jiminy wanders around the quiet streets, there isn't a single person to be seen and it seemed like a ghost town. The only sign of life is a lively window where lights could be seen in the shop of a woodcarver named Geppetto. This intrigues Jiminy to sneak his way through a tiny door crack in Geppetto's house, which is located near the middle of this unnamed village, and everything seems happy and peaceful/in order. Being a woodcarver, Geppetto's works of puppetry, dolls and other wooden toys/furnitures can be seen all inside his house and he has a pet cat named Figaro and a pet fish named Cleo. For a busy person who doesn't have enough free time, it's going to be hard for them to watch a 175 minute long movie. But still, this film isn't just for your past time because you will learn lessons that are applicable in real life. You just have to look for it deeper or understand the movie even more. Also, another thing that is not good in this movie is that I had a hard time understanding their dialogues because of their accent and the sound isn't that loud. Pinocchio Essay The Adventures of Pinocchio In 1883, the Italian author Carlo Collodi published the book "The Adventures of Pinocchio" narrating the story of a marionette named Pinocchio and his father Geppetto. The story starts in Tuscany when Geppetto, a poor and old carpenter, after receiving a talking piece of pinewood from his neighbor Master Cherry, decides to carve it into a boy named Pinocchio. When Geppetto finishes his work on the piece of wood, Pinocchio's adventures begin. Geppetto is willing to sacrifice everything he has, including his coat, to provide for his son, however, Pinocchio doesn't act like a mature and loving son. When Geppetto carves his arms, legs, and his unique nose, Pinocchio's struggles begin. Indeed, we can say that life is the call to adventure for Pinocchio. Consequently, since every adventure includes the thresholds that imply dangers, Pinocchio must face life and all the struggles that come with it. The first threshold for Pinocchio arrives on his first day of school when he decides to sell his school book to attend Mangiafuoco's puppet show. This decision will determine a series of events that will result in the separation of Pinocchio from his father Geppetto, and consequently the beginning of the adventure in which he will constantly need allies. Indeed, after leaving the puppet show, and after the meeting with the Cat and the Fox, Pinocchio will encounter his bigger helper: the Fairy with turquoise hair. Joseph Campbell describes the meeting with the supernatural aid as essential for the success of the hero (57). Indeed, throughout the story, the Fairy, who behaves as the proper helper, will always save Pinocchio when he is in the most deplorable and hopeless conditions, and she will always look after the wooden boy while he is facing the difficulties of his journey. In this fairytale, the meeting with the helper can also coincide with another element of the hero's journey: the meeting with the goddess. Indeed, many attributed divine powers to this enchanted character, proving the divine nature of the Fairy. However, the Fairy is like a mother for Pinocchio, and she is also present in the form of a blue goat when Pinocchio is swallowed by the tremendous Dogfish. This event is extremely important to explain and prove the universal path idealized by Campbell in his book. Indeed, one of the thresholds to overcome, in Campbell's opinion, is the belly of the whale, in which the hero will forge his character (Gauch). In Collodi's book, this process of descent in the ... • 21. Analysis Of Peter Pan Discovering that every child has to grow up at some point of time is the main idea or purpose behind the famous story of "Peter Pan." Though there are different versions of the story, each one generally has the same outcome. Analyzing two different interpretations of "Peter Pan", the Disney illusion and the original, by James M. Barrie, it is to be learned that the Disney animation simply brings the story to life, adds a different outlook on it as opposed to simple olden version. With new color, animation and modern day thought the Disney story creates a different playing of "Peter Pan". In Disney's version of "Peter Pan", Disney left out many gruesome facts in their version of the story. In the original "Peter Peter" by, James M. Barrie in 1904, Peter was a young boy who lived amidst fairies and would escort dead children half of the way to wherever they need to go. One night, Mrs. Darling sees Peter in the nursery, contrast to the cartoon where the parents are not important characters, and she is able to catch his shadow, roll it up, and hold it in a drawer so that she can attempt to catch the boy. She barely remembers this boy from stories told when she was younger. When Peter returns for his shadow when the parents are away, he mistakenly awakes Wendy. • 25. We Are All Familiar With Bible Stories And Fairy Tales We are all familiar with Bible stories and fairy tales. They typically began as verbal stories, passed down from generation to generation, before they were put down on paper or made into a film. Stories which use outlandish situations to, ideally, teach the readers how to live as good people. Stories such as Cinderella, The Three Little Pigs, Snow White, Jonah and the Whale, Noah 's Ark, Hansel and Gretel, and The Adventures of Pinocchio include situations which could not have possibly happened. These stories may help lull children to sleep but, at the same time, teach morals in a harsh or even violent manner. Like fairy tales, the Bible was written to teach stories to impressionable minds. Unlike fairy tales, Bible stories are still read today, they are not only read by children, but by adults with or without children. Many Christians today will argue that the Bible stories, such as Jonah and the Whale, Noah 's Ark, Adam and Eve, and such, were not written to take literally. If they are correct in assuming those stories are not literal encounters, then how would someone venturing through the bible know what to take literally and what to take as the word of God? If the stories of the Bible were never meant to be accepted as real events, then can they be considered fairy tales? If all stories in the bible are, in fact, the word of God and meant to be taken literal, then scientists need to re–evaluate almost everything they know about the world and how it works. It is ... • 27. Fairy Tales Morals A story always has a meaning or lesson it teaches. Fairy tales are stories with the addition of a magical element. They, too, have meanings the reader is supposed to take away. Authors purposefully fill their tales with symbols and characters that are meant to represent something. The meanings could be intending to teach societal values or rules. There are infinite interpretations one could potentially perceive from a single story. Likewise, a study from Cedarville University states, "the Bible is similar to fairy tales in that one can take several meanings from the same passage and interpret it differently depending on that individual's stage in life" (Foulkrod). Fairy tales with authors that are notably religious recognized the similarity between Bible teachings and fairy tales and often use religious symbols and themes to compliment the overall moral the story is trying to portray. Many of these tales also have meanings and moral takeaways that represent religious values. This can be seen in the works of the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, as well as Carlo Collodi. Religion is very prominent in the works of the Brothers Grimm. Their upbringing can be attributed to the Reformed Christian elements they reference in their stories. Jacob Grimm notes his Reformed faith as one of his earliest memories in his autobiography (Murphy 46), and Wilhelm openly talks about his memories from church in his own autobiography as well (Murphy 50). • 33. Shrek's Impact On Society And Symbolic Interactionism As Shrek was judged, we are as humans judged today. This is true for anything we do. Whether politics, television, or social media, it still defines how society and the individual will behave. See through everything society does, no matter the period of time, social interaction was navigated through words, and symbols. Which over time developed an emotional meaning, which are projected thru action or behaviour today. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of Symbolic Interactionism is "a theory that human interaction and communication is facilitated by words, gestures, and other symbols that have acquired conventionalized meanings", with this definition one can assume that the interactionist perspective is based around communication that is made easier, by things like words, gestures and symbols, so that they can gain the artistic meaning that will eventually make an effect ("symbolic interactionism"). Those who study the interactionist perspective often take every day social conversation and they use that to explain society, instead of taking the grand scheme of everything in its entirety and using that to explain a large societal area in its entirety. In the movie Shrek, the symbolism of each interaction has a deeper meaning somewhere down the road. For instance, Shrek losing his swamp leads to him going to Lord Farquaad. This in turn meeting Donkey and other fairy–tale creatures, and then going to save Fiona. This adventure, down the road of course, leads to him getting a wife and friends. When Shrek first meet the fairy tale creatures, he was about to start his quest to talk to the great lord Farquaad. The fairy tale creatures, who were all imprisoned and banished to Shrek's swamp by lord Farquaad from his kingdom, all came to Shrek's swamp. This led to many friendships being formed, intricate and even direct relationships were formed. The fairy–tale creatures who came to Shrek's swamp in the first place were ginger bread man named Gingy, the "big bad wolf", named Wolfie, Pinocchio, 3 blind mice and 3 little pigs. While Shrek, Gingy and Pinocchio are closer in relationship with a more intricate relationship, the rest of the gang mentioned were not that close to Shrek. The symbols behinds all their ... Fairy tales play an important role in a child's life because many fairy tales have a female as the main character, or they play a very important role. "The lead characters of fairy tales, perhaps because they were originally told by groups of females, are women" (Neikirk, par. 9). Some of the stories with strong female roles that were written by the Grimm brothers include "Cinderella", "Little Snow White" and "Rapunzel". Cinderella was a sweet and innocent young woman who had to do what her evil stepmother and stepsisters told her to. She was strong and was eventually rewarded while her sisters are punished with blindness for their wickedness. Snow White runs away to the forest to not be killed by the Queen. Rapunzel does not fear the wicked woman that keeps her locked in the tower for all of those years. Women were the ones that did most of the story telling back then, so it makes sense that they would be the main characters. We felt so grown up as we walked to the Abtsweg together, not in a group as we did when we walked to school with our friends, but just the two of us; my sister and I, wearing matching brown coats and perfectly starched bows in our hair. When we returned home and proudly handed Mom the basket filled with all the correct items, she praised us endlessly and when Ted's parents phoned, boasted about our accomplishment. They too, were pleased and realized that Ellen and I were growing up. One afternoon, during an unexpected visit from Opa Taco and Oma Tine, our presence downstairs was requested when they rang the doorbell upon their arrival. Summary Of Pinnocchio And The God Of Small Things The Oxford Dictionary defines a 'bildungsroman' as 'A novel that has as its main theme the formative years or spiritual education of one person', and in this essay, I am going to prove that both Carlo Collodi's 'The Adventures of Pinocchio' (1883) (hereafter referred to as 'Pinocchio') and Arundhati Roy's 'The God of Small Things' (1997) are both bildungsromans. To prove this argument is correct, I will: concentrate on the experiences of the children within Roy's work (Estha, Sophie Mol, and Rahel), focus on the responses from other characters to Pinocchio's choices to form a judgement as to whether the children in the selected texts do positively develop or regress in their education, and analyse the narrative style of the two aforementioned texts. It is important to consider that whilst 'The God of Small Things' was written in a third person omniscient narrative, 'Pinocchio' was written in a third person limited narrative, and both narratives enable the reader to clearly understand the motives behind the actions and decisions of the characters. Both Richard Wunderlich and Thomas J. Morrissey argue that 'Pinocchio' 'for adults, he had written successful political commentary and satire' whilst 'For children, he had translated fairy tales and written school textbooks' (pg. 5). Therefore, it depends on the reader's age which influences whether they believe that Pinocchio learns or does not, since 'Pinocchio' can be regarded as a 'school textbook' or a 'fairy tale'.
