Analysis Of The Film Murder On A Sunday Morning
The film "Murder on a Sunday Morning" is a documentary on the murder of Mary Ann Stephens.
This murder took place on May 7, 2000, in Jacksonville, Florida. Mary Anne Stephens was at the
Ramada hotel with her husband when a dark male wearing a dark shirt, shorts, and a flat brim hat
approached her and demanded for her purse. Within 5 seconds she was shot in the face by the bridge
of her nose and killed. It was later that day hat Brenton Butler was stopped by police and identified
by husband of Mary Anne Stephens. Brenton Butler was taken into custody where he remained for
the next six months facing charges of murder in the first degree and armed robbery. Through
evidence such as the clothes Brenton was wearing on the day of the murder, an alibi of going to
blockbuster to hand in an application, and lack of forensic testing, Brenton was found not guilty in
the case of Florida v. Brenton Leonard Butler after the jury convened for forty–five minutes on the
twenty–first of November in 2000. The Jacksonville grand jury also decided not to file criminal
charged against the three officers. After the case on March 12, 2001 the forensics department
retrieved the purse to process all parts of it to find fingerprints matching to Juan Curtis who
admitted to shooting Mary Ann Stephens. The Butler family planed to sue the sheriffs officers in an
$8.5 million civil rights lawsuit. Due Process of law can be defined as a right guaranteed in the 5th
and 14th amendments of the U.S.

The Mousetrap, The Real Inspector Hound, And The Murder Of...
Generic convention are elements employed in text that cause them to be labeled as distinct genre
(Devitt 174). These conventions almost have to be used or the text's genre will not be identifiable.
Different genres contains various conventions that can be identified through plot, themes,
characterization, setting, language or subgenre. A crime fiction will contain a mysterious crime,
detectives, a killer and a victim, violence, lamentation for the loss of an innocent life, rich and
professional setting, and a twist ending in some stories. The use of generic convention in stories is
important because it allows readers with specific preference to distinguish and choose between
different genres. This essay looks at the application of generic conventions in three crime fiction
stories, namely The Mousetrap, The Real inspector Hound, and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.
The author of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd includes murder mystery in her story. Murder of an
influential and an honorable man – Mr. Roger Ackroyd – has taken place it mysterious because no
one has seen it happen and no one knows the motive. Agatha Christie, included wealthy
neighborhood setting – Fernly Park – and a professional setting – police stations – which are typical
conventions for crime thrillers. Fernly Park, the home of the murder victim has many occupants
including a butler all of whom are suspects. Like The Mousetrap and The Real Inspector Hound,
Agatha incorporates a detective, Mr. Hercule

Identifying the Narrative and Genre Characteristics in a Film
Identifying the Narrative and Genre Characteristics in a Film
Film is undoubtly the reflective illusion of life and its complexities brought to a facade of
psychological reality for its audience. It is an art form which plays with mans very definition of
semiotic meanings, codes, signs, signifiers, connotations and popular ideologies to create a mental
association with its audience and transport the spectator through the door way of a cinematic
recreation of the "real world" This is more commonly known as verisimilitude. Arguably no genre
exploits and infact questions the social norms, moralities and issues of common social attitudes of
its audience to the extent of 'Noir' and its conventional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Deception, corruption of the seemingly incorruptible, treachery and murder are common place–with
dialogue usually being as abrasive to morality through its mode of address as the visual and thematic
conflict on screen. Meaning is created technically and characterised through a unique style of night
shooting, dark shadows, sharp lighting contrasts, askew camera angles, symbolic environments and
incoherent heavy flashbacked narratives. Iconography is a key part of this genre as it and its
reoccurring and recognisable symbols – such as the detective who operates on the edge of the law
(again a metaphoric blurring of the philosophical concept of good and evil) and sometimes even
actors associated with the genre itself, carry meaning from film to film. The narrational format of
this genre tends to, through the techniques of voice–over, subjective camera angles and similar
subjectiveness of actual storytelling convey an almost documentary style realism.
This realism gives the spectator a privileged if not deceiving access into the fictional mind of the
narrator. In the words of Robert Porfirio "It is almost if the narrator takes a perverse pleasure in

The Typical Detective Genre Portrayed in Sherlock Holmes'...
The Typical Detective Genre Portrayed in Sherlock Holmes' Literature The late Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle was a phenomenally successful writer, not only in the Victorian era but is still popular today;
his Sherlock Homes stories were perhaps his most successful, in which he combines realistic
situations of murders and scandals with the improbable situation of such a successful detective.
Victorian London was an exceptionally dangerous place to live. Prostitution, opium dens and
murders were inescapable. A women's role within the household was very much dependent on her
class and her husband, purely due to the fact was that herr husband was the breadwinner. They were
to stay at home; sex was supposedly purely for reproduction. ... Show more content on

His initial thought of his deception lasting until his debts were cleared was taken over by greed. "As
I grew richer I grew more ambitious, took a house in the country, and eventually married, with out
anyone having a suspicion as to my real occupation". St Clair was obviously oblivious to the fact
that people were suspicious of him. This occurs often in detective stories to add drama and surprise
to the ending. He considered his begging to be an "occupation" Surely he did not deem this to be a
stable and satisfying career for some one of his status. The story of this swindler is ironic as in order
to keep his high status, he had to come down to such a low status that people pitied him. Is Neville
St Claire responsible for his actions or was the true crime committed by society for showing the
fraudster empathy? The Victorian society should be criticised for judging people, but surely
detective stories thrive on judgement and first impressions. The class system in Victorian times was
very much divided. People did not tend to mix socially indifferent classes. The Working class was
very much the factory workers and labourers, who often lived in horrendous conditions in slums.
Irene Adler from "A Scandal in Bohemia" was secretly seeing the king but because of her low
position in the social order and the fickle personality of the king, they were forced to break up.

Bang! The shot of a gun. A body thumps to the ground as the killer makes an escape out the fire
escape on the fifth floor. A few days later, an elderly woman calls the police about an odd smell
coming from the apartment above her. Within the hour, there's a whole police team in the fifth floor

homicide detectives. The detectives observe the body and then go to search for a bullet. They notice
the window by the fire escape open a crack, and have one of their team dust for fingerprints. After

One huge technological breakthrough that has directly impacted the field of homicide investigation
is DNA fingerprinting. DNA fingerprinting can be very helpful, especially in rape and murder cases.
It was first used in 1984 to solve a double rape and murder case of two girls, three years apart. The
first victim was Lynda Mann, a fifteen–year–old girl from Narborough, England. She was walking
from one friend 's house to another, when she noticed someone standing by a lamppost close to the
entrance gate of the Carlton Hayes psychiatric hospital. (McCrery, x) Lynda's father called the police
when she wasn't home by 1:30am, but because she had not been missing for long the police were not
very worried. The next morning, a hospital orderly on his way to work stumbled across what he
thought to be a partially clothed mannequin, but was actually the rigid, pale body of Lynda Mann.
While at the time there was not the technology to completely solve the case, "the technology that
was to prove decisive in solving it [the case] was developed only a few miles from Narborough, at
the University of Leicester, roughly a year after Lynda's tragic death." (McCrery, xi) On September
10, 1984, a biochemist by the name of Dr. Alec Jeffreys was examining an X–ray film image of a
DNA experiment. While examining it, he noticed "that the DNA of different members of his
technician's family showed both

The Detective Story Genre: Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes Stories
One of the most popular literary forms is the detective genre. The most remarkable detective author
of all time is the late nineteenth century writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His most prominent works
are the famous Sherlock Holmes stories. These novels and short stories set the standard for the
genre. Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories can be considered a model for detective
fiction because each is centered on a mystery, Sherlock is a brilliant detective, and clues are a
prerequisite for success.
The very essence of any detective story is the mystery. Unlike murder mysteries, which have a lot in
common with detective stories, Holmes's problems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Watson stated "So accustomed was I to his invariable success that the very possibility of his failing
had ceased to enter my mind" (Doyle 218). Holmes fails, but the antagonist decides not to utilize the
pictures after all. The mystery in Holmes's stories can be a wide variety of things: stolen fortune,
murder, scandal, and everything in between. While most mystery stories involve assassination,
"Unlike many detective stories, the Holmes don't necessarily have a murder" (Horsley). Of course,
you might not unearth an instance of Sherlock Holmes chasing down a missing cat, because even his
least significant cases are of acute importance. Important cases seize the reader's attention, and make
the solution of the case more urgent.
The opening case of a Holmes story often leads to a second account. Although there are some
exceptions like A Case of Identity in which Holmes does not leave Baker Street, Holmes usually
attends to the crime scene to investigate. He wastes no time in doing so: "Holmes visits the scene of
the crime, and he does so with rapidity" (Holeman). Time and again, the original puzzle is of lower
import than the latter. Holeman notes that "The duo takes the investigation to the scene of the crime,
or the site where the crime is to be committed. Often the main crime has yet to be committed"

Holmes and Watson in the Detective Genre Essay
Holmes and Watson in the Detective Genre
The detective performs a key role in the story and provides hope to the reader, especially in the time

Victorian life was hard, law–less and dangerous and especially in London.
In every story Conan Doyle
A vital component to the detective genre is the sleuth himself who in these stories is portrayed as a
convincing, sharp, and witty character; a gentleman with intelligence, more so than the reader and

Holmes' precise and accurate conclusions are processed through an intricate and thorough method.
When Conan Doyle introduces a distracting factor which might throw a doubt upon all Holmes
mental abilities we see that Holmes is so involved in his methods that the slightest emotional change
could tip him over to the wrong conclusion.
Holmes' highly tuned and accurate mind is such that if anything dramatically changed, or was
altered, it would change the entire outlook upon the crime.
'grit in a sensitive instrument, or crack in one of his high power lenses would not be more disturbing
than a strong emotion in a narrative such as his'
This gives a sense that if anything were to alter, the whole case could be solved, or go terribly
wrong.
Sherlock Holmes humours his acquaintances with his dry wit, on numerous occasions:
'my life is spent in one long effort to escape from the commonplaces of existence. These little
problems help me to do so.' Suggesting that without his little adventures he would be bored and
solving these crimes show him some interest and keep his brain ticking over.
Doyle also implies that Holmes does his work, not for want of

Functions Of A Discourse Community
Discourse communities are all around us, which can include a sports team, academics, and many
others. However today I am focusing on a discourse community that relates to my major, criminal
justice. In order for me to understand swales six characteristics I interviewed a homicide detective
relating to criminal justice. A discourse community is a group of people involved in and
communicating about a particular topic, issue, or in a particular field. A discourse community is
defined by six characteristics. The six defining characteristics of a discourse community require a
set of common goals, there must also be mechanisms of communications within the community as
well as feedback among members. Genre, the fourth characteristic, describing the various methods
of output. The last two are terminology, and expertise. In order to really understand that criminal
justice is a discourse community, I had to do research, and interview an expert in the field. To be a
part of a discourse community, one must be credible, possess factual knowledge and draw on the
values of its members to be accepted into the community. At the same time a person must learn
typical ways people in that community communicate and argue. They share a certain genre which is
a type of writing. Members of discourse communities provide information and feedback that are
imperative in order for that discourse community to grow. My interviewee, Carol Mims, is a child
homicide detective. She is an alumni here at

often will tell stories of pervious cases he was involved in and share strategies he used in solving his

shared are not always ones that have been successful. He will share his failures and mistakes in

room is cleared and investigators analyze the suitcase, matching the fingerprint on the suitcase to a

suspected suicide in front of a church. Next to the body, three cigarette buttswere found, and when
they search the church, they find a candlestick, part of a tooth that came from the victim, and a
letter. After questioning potential witnesses, detectives eventually find a burned car that has the body
of the stockbroker inside of it. They also find a gun, the missing hard drive and a burned piece of
paper. When they analyze the hard drive, they find an email from the victim from another person,
Charles, about an argument right before the death took place. The piece of paper in the car indicated
where the car had been prior, and they search the location, finding money and a device used to make

The Characteristics Of A Detective Fiction
Detective Fiction Essay
A detective fiction is a literary genre in form of a short story or novel that deals with crimes, usually
murder and detectives are involved to seek out justice for the victims. The detectives involved in
detective fictions can either be private, amateur, or police detectives. There are also other characters
like the suspects and the side kicks. An amateur detective is a detective who has no license to
operate as a private investigator neither is he/she a member of the police force. These detectives
have a different profession, but are not trained in criminal investigation. They have a passion in
crime and delivering justice to the society. On the other hand, a private detective also known as hard
boiled is a male or female detective trained in criminal investigation. Dealing with crime is his/her
profession, therefore, has good physical attributes and uses the gun efficiently. The two detectives
differ in two ways; first, they differ in financial status, secondly they differ on how they use violence
in their investigations.
The first difference between an amateur detective and a private detective is their financial statuses.

In addition, most of them are always poor. A good example is in the Simple Art of Murder by
Raymond Chandler. Raymond writes that, "He is a relatively poor man, or he would not be a
detective at all. He is a common man or he could not go among common people," (219). Another
example is the short story Trouble is My Business by Phillip Marlowe. This story presents a needy
private detective. When he is hired, he confesses that, "I started to get up from my chair, then
remembered that business had been bad for a month and that I needed the money" (Marlowe 255).

Television : An Effective Job Of Depicting Real World...
Television has always been a big influence in American everyday life. From there being shows
about doctors, military, or even policemen. However, not everything in these shows is a very
accurate portrayal of the real world. On the other hand, some of the things are real or based on
something off the real world. Shows like "First 48," "COPS," and the movie "End of Watch" show
the audience a glimpse at what real detective work might be like. My father works for Homeland
Security; which would make him a direct source of how the real world is. I believe that "First 48,"
"COPS," and "End of Watch" do an effective job of depicting real world detective/ police work. This
is important because television influences many of the decisions we make in our lives. "First 48" is a
show that deals with detectives that are called to crime scenes. The show documents the first hours
of homicides in different cities. Their job is to evaluate the scene; look for any clues that may be of
help. This is a very important step in solving murders. They have to be on the lookout for foot
prints, bullet casings, and many other things that could help solve a crime. Although the show isn't
always accurate, it catches the essence of what criminal scene investigators actual do. "First 48"
depicts the parts that would intrigue an audience, rather than have the audience watch the long
process of what really happens. Another show that exemplifies police work in the real world would
be the show "COPS." The

Medic Noir Gender Analysis
Over the recent years Scandinavian crime fiction have captivated television audiences around the
world. This phenomenon, known broadly as 'Nordic Noir,' is characterised by bleak, gothic
landscapes, and obsessive and socially isolated protagonists who push themselves to solve the cases
no one else seems to be able to solve. This chapter will illustrate how Nordic Noir deploys the film
noir narrative tropes, and how it reimagined its heroes and heroines. With themes of gender politics
and its role in creating representation and imagination, I will discuss how film noir deploys its
depictions of gender and how it is constructed for contemporary television that embodies feminism.

There are women in classic film noir with a similar defiant attitude, to whom the male hero often
experiences a sexual attraction: the femme fatale. These women are studied as symbols of 'peculiar'
power: carrying guns, smoking cigarettes, and going after what they want, similar to the men in
these narratives (Gledhill, 1998, p. 24). The femme fatales are mysterious, ambiguous and most
significantly: deadly. These women and their power are however mainly defined by their sexuality
and the men often still hold the voice of authority – mainly through voice overs and flashbacks
(Gledhill, 1998, p. 24). They are both desirable and dangerous to men (Kaplan, 1998, p. 16). The
film noir's femme fatale has for a long time served as a record for anxieties about female sexuality
and power, which will be discussed more deeply later in this chapter. The femme fatale fights
against the male domination and often ends op losing her life or freedom. "The resistance of these
femme fatales are always fatal, if not to herself, it will be to the men who fall for her" (Wager, 2005,
p. 4). With the dangers that her sexual performance causes, the classic genre exposed the limitations
of a female heroine. It suggests that terrible things would happen if men let these sexual women
distract them from their quest, and that the power that these particular women hold, is profoundly
dangerous. The sex and gender issues that derive from the femme fatale's presence supposedly
trigger the inevitable demise of herself and the hero, but it is nonetheless important to notice that
these early film noirs offered audiences a female character that, although destructive, is not weak,

my own conclusions. I value justice above many other ideals. I don't feel comfortable with the
unknown, which is why I am constantly looking for answers and explanations. These are all simple
characteristics that the "What's Your Color?" assessment gave me. When I first saw this personality
test I figured it was going to be extremely inaccurate as many of them usually are. Ironically and to
my surprise, it was impressively spot on. Going down the list, I can agree with each and every
characteristic about myself. This confirmed my top two careers to pursue. The first being a career in
law enforcement as a detective, and the second being a career as a lawyer. After doing some
research, I've concluded that becoming a lawyer is the superior option. For starters, a police
detective isn't a standalone job one can simply jump right into after college. Becoming a police
officer and a detective are simply stops along the road in the career path of law enforcement.
However, before even becoming a police officer, one must undergo training at a police academy.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics states,

The Death Of A Bullet
Bang! A gunshot went off at night in the town of Hartsville, Montana. Diana Dixon died at 60 years
of age. The police found her body when the neighbors called them. It was that same night her son
David was found with blood on his coat. Diana was murdered and the town was in shock.
The police took David to the station questioning him about the night his mother was murdered.
David was the son of Diana Dixon, who adopted him as well as his sister Jennifer. He worked at a
gas station just down the road from his house, the place his mother was murdered.
At the crime scene, the shell of a bullet was found as well as footprints belonging to someone with
size 13 shoes. The same size David wore. The blood belonging to Diana, type AB+, was found on
David. David would keep telling the police he didn't kill his mother. In fact, David and his mother
got along well. They spent time together and went to church every Sunday. Everybody thought
David was guilty, except for one man who was about to uncover the facts.
The night Diana was murdered, October 19, a man by the name of James Mccullough was eating at
his favorite restaurant when he saw a car speeding by with two men. It looked like someone was just
driving until James saw masks on the men. He also saw the car stop. One of the men stepped out and
threw a bag in a dumpster. James later investigated the dumpster and found a gun! After reporting
this to the police, they ran the gun for fingerprints. One set was found. They belonged to

The Subgenre Of The Genfield Genre
The thriller genre has undergone many changes and phases throughout the past, which is evident in
the changes within its subgenres, each of which has its own distinctions. Some subgenres of the
thriller genre include the detective thriller and the suspense thriller. Alfred Hitchcock revolutionized
the thriller genre during his lifetime. In fact, his work defined a whole subgenre of the thriller: the
suspense thriller. The thriller genre has evolved and developed over the history of film and has
changed throughout the postclassical and modernist periods. In the postclassical period, films would
focus more on developing the character of the protagonist rather than the antagonist. The backstory
and motives of the antagonist would not be a driving force in a film during that period. In the
postclassical period, the elements of good and evil in the films are usually very distinct as well with
little to no grey zone. However, as time passed, there was a transition from the postclassical period
to the modernist period which also brought about changes in some of the aspects of cinema. During
the modernist era, there was a greater emphasis on the antagonists of a film. Films would oftentimes
give antagonists some more attention and backstory than they did before. There was also not as clear
of a distinction between good and evil; there was oftentimes a grey zone which allows the audience
to feel empathy for the antagonist. This newfound focus on the antagonists can be seen in Murder

Social Media And Loneliness : A Little Mixture Of The...
Literary critic Benjamin Roberts uses the gothic genre with a little mixture of the detective genre to
critique the growing reliance on technology to communicate rather than actual human interaction.
Roberts emphasizes his critique by bringing up the label our generation has been branded with "the
loneliest [generation]" (2). Matt Pittman also argues this in his article "Social Media And
Loneliness: Why An Instagram Picture May Be Worth More Than A Thousand Twitter Words", "It is
surprising then that, in spite of this enhanced interconnectivity, young adults may be lonelier than
other age groups, and that the current generation may be the loneliest ever" (155). "I"'s openness to
the loneliness seems a little satirical, however, he's still trapped with what's making him insane. He
tries to rationalize his preference for being isolated by saying "You might wonder why I locked
myself into this white prison, well it's pretty simple I don't like my species" (Roberts 1), but in
reality, technology has taken his ability to communicate normally as a human being. The Gothic
genre emphasizes isolation something that "I" has done to himself. "I" seems to identify more with
the characters on Netflix than the people in his classes. The elements of the Gothic genre continue
when "I" contemplates his own sanity. "I"'s sanity is not only reflected in the questioning of it, but in
the way his mind keeps shifting topics. The short sentences across the story reflect "I"'s lack of
ability to

The following scenario is from the article "Juvenile Interrogations Must Be Recorded Rules
Wisconsin Supreme Court," written by David Ziemer, and pulled from the Wisconsin Law Journal.
Published July 13th, 2005.
[I]n 2001, three young men robbed a McDonald's restaurant in Milwaukee. 14–year–old Jerrell C.J.
was arrested in connection with the offense, taken to the police station, booked, and placed in an
interrogation room. In the room, Jerrell was handcuffed to a wall and left alone for approximately
two hours. At 9 a.m., Police Detectives Ralph Spano and Kurt Sutter entered the interrogation room.
The detectives introduced themselves, removed Jerrell's handcuffs, and asked him some background
questions. Jerrell stated that he was 14 years old and in the eighth grade. He also provided the
names, addresses, and phone numbers of his parents and siblings. Jerrell was advised of his Miranda
rights, and the detectives then began to question Jerrell about the armed robbery. Jerrell denied any
involvement. The detectives challenged this denial and encouraged Jerrell to be "truthful and
honest" and "start standing up for what he did." Jerrell again denied his involvement. The detectives
again challenged his denial. At times throughout the exchange, Detective Spano raised his voice. He
later explained, "I'm raising my voice short of yelling at him . . . there were points I needed to make,
and I needed to make them with a strong voice. But not yelling." Jerrell described the

The Police Procedural In Ed Mcbain's Cop Hater
The police procedural is a recent addition to detective fiction. This is because "[b]efore the 1980s
the police novel was a minor, and somewhat maligned, stepchild in the field of crime fiction."[5] As
one of the early police procedural novels, Ed McBain's Cop Hater was a factor in how detective
fiction came to embrace the police procedural. In doing so, it had to deal with the attitudes that
caused cop characters to be considered unsuitable protagonists. This process was facilitated by
efforts to make the police characters relatable, and the procedural methods they use accessible. In
doing so, McBain wrote a novel that paved the way for acceptance of the police detective.
The early detective novels were very much against the police. As was claimed within Cop Hater, "a
cop is a symbol of law and order", which should make the police detective the most natural choice
to be the detective. Yet in the earlier eras of detective fiction, the detectives typically worked outside
of the law. Historically, the police were not publicly seen as a group which were competent enough
to be trusted to deal with these matters. This may have been justified in context, given that the early
constables mostly worked with the information others gave them, rather than seeking it themselves
[6]. The early detectives were romanticised, often as geniuses, for working outside this seemingly
corrupt system [1]. The issue of public opinion has lingered for the modern police novel to address.

The Death Of The State Of Tennessee After Memphis Essay
According to FBI 2010 UCR report, there was fifty–five homicide death reported, it's second
highest in the state of Tennessee after Memphis. Losing someone who we loved through homicide
would be one of the most shocking experience, In my life period I haven't experienced any homicide
which includes my loved ones, I come from the peaceful neighborhood, since I was the child I grew
up in a peaceful environment, there was low violence but minor, dangerous weapons such as guns,
biological weapon or even swords were rare. I'm thankful for the way I was raised, grew up without
knowing crimes, drug, weapon, etc. But when I hear news about homicide I envision how would my
life change If I lose my loved ones, especially my father because men are more likely to get killed in
homicide than women. It's always strange feelings when the person was with you yesterday and
today they are not here. Shared plans and dreams are no longer there, all lefts are the memories
which were shared with a dead person. Deaths are sudden no one knows when we're going to die but
dying from another human being puts more grief than other types of death. My father is basically
bread winner at the house currently, so there would be many effects in our day to day life. My
reaction would be the same reaction as when someone lose their loved one 's specifically father. In
this type of situation, I will try to calm myself and call the police as soon as I can, I will give much

Undeniably, The Foremost Element Of Mystery And Detective
Undeniably, the foremost element of mystery and detective fiction is that of discovery. The most
familiar and general plot found is the genre is a simple one: an unknown situation or event is
presented and, through investigation or curiosity, an explanation is found. While many
circumstances can be applied to this formula, the main appeal of such stories "consist in finding
out... the true order and meaning of events that have been part disclosed and part concealed"
(Barzun 144) Consequently, it is no surprise that the most enduring characters of these works are the
detective figures, those who take it upon themselves to discover the source of disruption caused by

In addition, he clears up the obstacle of criminal suspicion so that they can marry: they furnish the
objective means by which the detective can benefit society (Grella 95)
Here the detective is the revealer to the reader and the story 's immediate characters, yet the
concealer to greater society. One of the earliest examples of the family scandal device can be found
in Collins ' The Moonstone. In the novel, the theft of the titular stone jeopardizes the social stature
of the respectable family involved. The loss of the item is of no great financial burden, yet a private
investigation is pursued to alleviate the implication of any respectable individual in the crime. The
unofficial detective Sergeant Cuff is brought in as much for his ability for discretion as his renown
as a detective. Indeed, the Sergeant is promptly paid and dismissed as suspicions shift towards Miss
Verinder: "In resigning all further claim on his services, I have only to say that I am convinced of his
honesty and his intelligence; but I am more firmly persuaded than ever, that the circumstances, in
this case, have fatally misled him" (Collins 166). With that remark, Cuff 's role in the eyes of his
employers shift from that of concealer to revealer. Subsequently, still concerned of Rachel 's role in
the crime, Franklin Blake, aided by Ezra Jennings, takes over the role of detective and the duty of
dispersing the scandal by continuing an investigation the theft outside of the

Pride and Glory what a good name for a movie that represents the great NYPD and all they stand

different side of the police force at hand and how corrupt police officers would be thinking during
something like this. I'm sure the true meaning behind this movie was not a mash on the police

For the most part people believe every word of it, which amazes me. It's like the saying goes; "never
judge a book by its cover" yea well never judge a situation by its outcome. There is a reason why
there are detectives and forensic science. These help find the guilty person. This was shown in the
movie. Edward Norton was the detective who finally discovered his family corruption and was able
to get it solved. So many things that happen right away are quickly assumed ass that. When the final
verdict comes out at the end, people are royally shocked. My step brother is a homicide detective in
the West Virginia district. I was able to talk to him over the phone for a small interview this past
week and ask him about the movie and if it kind of relates to things he has seen. His first statement
was "Never" he has never seen a criminal intention of murder or beatings of individuals. He said
that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It just hasn't happened in his district. He said the movie was
very good and it does show a side of corruption that does happen. He said murder is not usually a
known corruption but taking things here and there are. For example if someone broke into a liquor
store and the units at the scene are there taking notes and things they may take a few items for
themselves. He said obviously these officers were dealt with later. He laughed and said how could

This particular story called Seven Percent Solution, the character in story named Holmes and, Freud
had so many similarities, but I decided to choose three physic and detectives. Freud and Holmes are

from their disappointment and accomplishment and what they were afraid of. An example from the

Silence of the Lambs can be placed within many genres. One of which is the "Thriller" genre. A
huge contribution to why Silence of the Lambs is a thriller film is the character of deranged genius

performance, Lecter holds the key to the case Detective Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster
whom also won the Academy Award for Best Actress, is determined to solve. With such a situation,

Two common tropes of the psychological thriller are mind games and obsession, both of which are
at the forefront of Silence insofar as Detective Starling being held mentally captive to the

film in regards to how she overcomes it. Another thriller that falls into these two thriller subgenres
and even replicates the Hannibal versus Starling situation almost identically is Christopher Nolan's

"Along with the story line about crime, there will usually be a personal story line so viewers have a
chance to know the cops as characters" (Class Notes, para 5). This is best shown when the detective
is meeting up for a date with his girlfriend who ended up not being able to come. While he was
waiting at the bar a guy tried to fight him. He later finds out it was his girlfriend's ex–husband trying
to cause friction between all of them. Elementary does not fit the blueprint for a typical cop show.
The public is to believe that the clown was possibly harmful or bad when all along one of the City's
public water workers was behind contaminating the water and hiring someone to do so. While this
was happening, the clown saw him. Therefore, he got murdered. It was a line of crimes that
happened but, the bad guy does not show up till middle/towards the end of the show. This gives
Elementary a combination of multiple genre types that are similar to different types of cop shows.
Conclusion
Overall, Elementary is a show that does represent good vs. evil but, there is more too it then just
that. It's not your typical blueprint cop show. There is mystery and a twist to each case that makes
the show not predictable to the audience. While also incorporating someone's lifestyle it makes the
show seem more on a personal level for viewers to relate to. The makers of the show did not make

Geiger was probably taking pornographic photographic photographs of Carmen who is high on

We also get a glimpse of more corruption within this film when Brody and Agnes, the lady at the

out that Geiger's dead and start an investigation. The blackmail starts when Brody in Geiger's place
gets Agnes to tell Mrs Rutledge and inform her that he has a picture of Carmen to sell for $5000.
She then tells Marlowe about it when she comes to see him at his office because she's trying to

Secondly, Toole had detailed information concerning the crime scene that would only be known by

The book outlines the tireless work done by the bereaved parents in search for justice on behalf of
other missing children. The main attraction of the book is the investigation of the Hollywood Police
Department that exposes the bulging of the investigators that had previously worked on the case.
Standiford and Matthews carefully builds the case against the police. They provide details that
contain numerous leads that were disregarded during the initial investigation. These included some
obvious questions that were never asked, a number of crucial witnesses that were ignored, and

The book exposes the most damning revelation concerning ignorance of the Hollywood police on

Detectives Research Papers
A detective is a police officer, whose duty is to detect criminals, by in–depth investigation of cases.
When attempting to solve a crime, detectives conduct a criminal investigation that seeks all the facts
about a crime to help determine the truth: what happened and who is responsible. This involves
making a preliminary and final investigation. A detective’s task is to gather, organize, and
use information about social behavior. To effectively complete that task a detective should possess
certain characteristics: intellectual, psychological, and physical. Studies were conducted on the
importance and efficiency of the criminal investigation system, and on the need to integrate written
policies, and rules. Detectives have many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A confession is not always necessary, because sometimes enough incriminating evidence has
already been obtained. If there is sufficient evidence or a confession is obtained, then detectives can
arrest the suspect. It is the detective’s job to present the best possible case to the
prosecution. After all this occurs the case is disposed of. These steps are not always followed in this
exact order, and sometimes steps are eliminated. In conclusion, a detective’s job is basically
to clear or dispose of a case (Bennett, 1981). Detectives, when conducting an investigation, should
first determine whether a crime has been committed. Thus, a detective who is familiar with the
different crimes and their elements (what must occur for an act to be called a specific type of crime),
knows immediately if a crime has actually been committed. When a detective receives a case, he or
she conducts a preliminary investigation. When establishing a case, a preliminary investigation
consists of different aspects. A detective’s job includes such things as measuring,

To Not Solve A Crime: The Zodiac Killer
To Not Solve a Crime: Zodiac as a Crime Film Crime films have been the staple of non–fiction
rebellion movies since the beginning of their existence. Each crime film shares similar
characteristics relating them to the genre however individualizing them from each other with
different crimes, investigations, and mannerisms. A prime example for definitive representation of
such films would be the 2007 David Fincher's Zodiac. The movie is based off of the true crime story
of the infamous manhunt for the Zodiac killer during the late 1960s. Zodiac follows closely to the
original story of the San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) and the
San Francisco detective department as they investigate the Zodiac case and track down leads. As
mentioned prior, this film is a true detective crime ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This movie follows the writer of the original Zodiac book, Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal), as
he solves the puzzles and investigates the murders of the Zodiac killer in order to find the Zodiac
killer. The story runs a parallel with the San Francisco Detective Department's David Toschi (Mark
Ruffalo) and William Armstrong (Anthony Edwards), as they gather and conglomerate with
witnesses, survivors, and other departments. In total the Zodiac Killer murders, through varies
methods, seven people. After each murder the Zodiac Killer sends cryptic messages through code
and riddles to the San Francisco Chronical, where Graysmith works as a cartoonist. Graysmith
becomes obsessed with solving the puzzles and ceasing the murders, which eventually ends his
career, marriage, and connection with self–being. At the end of the film, staying true to what
actually happened in real life, there was no accusations made and the case ran cold. The movie ends
with condolences to the families of the victims of the Zodiac Killer stating that no more murders
have been stated to be by the Zodiac

Analysis Of The Film Murder On A Sunday Morning

  • 1. Analysis Of The Film Murder On A Sunday Morning The film "Murder on a Sunday Morning" is a documentary on the murder of Mary Ann Stephens. This murder took place on May 7, 2000, in Jacksonville, Florida. Mary Anne Stephens was at the Ramada hotel with her husband when a dark male wearing a dark shirt, shorts, and a flat brim hat approached her and demanded for her purse. Within 5 seconds she was shot in the face by the bridge of her nose and killed. It was later that day hat Brenton Butler was stopped by police and identified by husband of Mary Anne Stephens. Brenton Butler was taken into custody where he remained for the next six months facing charges of murder in the first degree and armed robbery. Through evidence such as the clothes Brenton was wearing on the day of the murder, an alibi of going to blockbuster to hand in an application, and lack of forensic testing, Brenton was found not guilty in the case of Florida v. Brenton Leonard Butler after the jury convened for forty–five minutes on the twenty–first of November in 2000. The Jacksonville grand jury also decided not to file criminal charged against the three officers. After the case on March 12, 2001 the forensics department retrieved the purse to process all parts of it to find fingerprints matching to Juan Curtis who admitted to shooting Mary Ann Stephens. The Butler family planed to sue the sheriffs officers in an $8.5 million civil rights lawsuit. Due Process of law can be defined as a right guaranteed in the 5th and 14th amendments of the U.S. ... • 3. The Mousetrap, The Real Inspector Hound, And The Murder Of... Generic convention are elements employed in text that cause them to be labeled as distinct genre (Devitt 174). These conventions almost have to be used or the text's genre will not be identifiable. Different genres contains various conventions that can be identified through plot, themes, characterization, setting, language or subgenre. A crime fiction will contain a mysterious crime, detectives, a killer and a victim, violence, lamentation for the loss of an innocent life, rich and professional setting, and a twist ending in some stories. The use of generic convention in stories is important because it allows readers with specific preference to distinguish and choose between different genres. This essay looks at the application of generic conventions in three crime fiction stories, namely The Mousetrap, The Real inspector Hound, and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. The author of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd includes murder mystery in her story. Murder of an influential and an honorable man – Mr. Roger Ackroyd – has taken place it mysterious because no one has seen it happen and no one knows the motive. Agatha Christie, included wealthy neighborhood setting – Fernly Park – and a professional setting – police stations – which are typical conventions for crime thrillers. Fernly Park, the home of the murder victim has many occupants including a butler all of whom are suspects. Like The Mousetrap and The Real Inspector Hound, Agatha incorporates a detective, Mr. Hercule ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Identifying the Narrative and Genre Characteristics in a Film Identifying the Narrative and Genre Characteristics in a Film Film is undoubtly the reflective illusion of life and its complexities brought to a facade of psychological reality for its audience. It is an art form which plays with mans very definition of semiotic meanings, codes, signs, signifiers, connotations and popular ideologies to create a mental association with its audience and transport the spectator through the door way of a cinematic recreation of the "real world" This is more commonly known as verisimilitude. Arguably no genre exploits and infact questions the social norms, moralities and issues of common social attitudes of its audience to the extent of 'Noir' and its conventional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Deception, corruption of the seemingly incorruptible, treachery and murder are common place–with dialogue usually being as abrasive to morality through its mode of address as the visual and thematic conflict on screen. Meaning is created technically and characterised through a unique style of night shooting, dark shadows, sharp lighting contrasts, askew camera angles, symbolic environments and incoherent heavy flashbacked narratives. Iconography is a key part of this genre as it and its reoccurring and recognisable symbols – such as the detective who operates on the edge of the law (again a metaphoric blurring of the philosophical concept of good and evil) and sometimes even actors associated with the genre itself, carry meaning from film to film. The narrational format of this genre tends to, through the techniques of voice–over, subjective camera angles and similar subjectiveness of actual storytelling convey an almost documentary style realism. This realism gives the spectator a privileged if not deceiving access into the fictional mind of the narrator. In the words of Robert Porfirio "It is almost if the narrator takes a perverse pleasure in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Typical Detective Genre Portrayed in Sherlock Holmes'... The Typical Detective Genre Portrayed in Sherlock Holmes' Literature The late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a phenomenally successful writer, not only in the Victorian era but is still popular today; his Sherlock Homes stories were perhaps his most successful, in which he combines realistic situations of murders and scandals with the improbable situation of such a successful detective. Victorian London was an exceptionally dangerous place to live. Prostitution, opium dens and murders were inescapable. A women's role within the household was very much dependent on her class and her husband, purely due to the fact was that herr husband was the breadwinner. They were to stay at home; sex was supposedly purely for reproduction. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His initial thought of his deception lasting until his debts were cleared was taken over by greed. "As I grew richer I grew more ambitious, took a house in the country, and eventually married, with out anyone having a suspicion as to my real occupation". St Clair was obviously oblivious to the fact that people were suspicious of him. This occurs often in detective stories to add drama and surprise to the ending. He considered his begging to be an "occupation" Surely he did not deem this to be a stable and satisfying career for some one of his status. The story of this swindler is ironic as in order to keep his high status, he had to come down to such a low status that people pitied him. Is Neville St Claire responsible for his actions or was the true crime committed by society for showing the fraudster empathy? The Victorian society should be criticised for judging people, but surely detective stories thrive on judgement and first impressions. The class system in Victorian times was very much divided. People did not tend to mix socially indifferent classes. The Working class was very much the factory workers and labourers, who often lived in horrendous conditions in slums. Irene Adler from "A Scandal in Bohemia" was secretly seeing the king but because of her low position in the social order and the fickle personality of the king, they were forced to break up. A few days later, an elderly woman calls the police about an odd smell coming from the apartment above her. Within the hour, there's a whole police team in the fifth floor apartment, including forensic investigators, ballistics experts, crime scene photographers, and homicide detectives. The detectives observe the body and then go to search for a bullet. They notice the window by the fire escape open a crack, and have one of their team dust for fingerprints. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One huge technological breakthrough that has directly impacted the field of homicide investigation is DNA fingerprinting. DNA fingerprinting can be very helpful, especially in rape and murder cases. It was first used in 1984 to solve a double rape and murder case of two girls, three years apart. The first victim was Lynda Mann, a fifteen–year–old girl from Narborough, England. She was walking from one friend 's house to another, when she noticed someone standing by a lamppost close to the entrance gate of the Carlton Hayes psychiatric hospital. (McCrery, x) Lynda's father called the police when she wasn't home by 1:30am, but because she had not been missing for long the police were not very worried. The next morning, a hospital orderly on his way to work stumbled across what he thought to be a partially clothed mannequin, but was actually the rigid, pale body of Lynda Mann. While at the time there was not the technology to completely solve the case, "the technology that was to prove decisive in solving it [the case] was developed only a few miles from Narborough, at the University of Leicester, roughly a year after Lynda's tragic death." (McCrery, xi) On September 10, 1984, a biochemist by the name of Dr. Alec Jeffreys was examining an X–ray film image of a DNA experiment. The Detective Story Genre: Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes Stories One of the most popular literary forms is the detective genre. The most remarkable detective author of all time is the late nineteenth century writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His most prominent works are the famous Sherlock Holmes stories. These novels and short stories set the standard for the genre. Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories can be considered a model for detective fiction because each is centered on a mystery, Sherlock is a brilliant detective, and clues are a prerequisite for success. The very essence of any detective story is the mystery. Unlike murder mysteries, which have a lot in common with detective stories, Holmes's problems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Watson stated "So accustomed was I to his invariable success that the very possibility of his failing had ceased to enter my mind" (Doyle 218). Holmes fails, but the antagonist decides not to utilize the pictures after all. The mystery in Holmes's stories can be a wide variety of things: stolen fortune, murder, scandal, and everything in between. While most mystery stories involve assassination, "Unlike many detective stories, the Holmes don't necessarily have a murder" (Horsley). Of course, you might not unearth an instance of Sherlock Holmes chasing down a missing cat, because even his least significant cases are of acute importance. Important cases seize the reader's attention, and make the solution of the case more urgent. The opening case of a Holmes story often leads to a second account. Although there are some exceptions like A Case of Identity in which Holmes does not leave Baker Street, Holmes usually attends to the crime scene to investigate. He wastes no time in doing so: "Holmes visits the scene of the crime, and he does so with rapidity" (Holeman). Time and again, the original puzzle is of lower import than the latter. Holeman notes that "The duo takes the investigation to the scene of the crime, or the site where the crime is to be committed. Often the main crime has yet to be committed" ... Holmes' precise and accurate conclusions are processed through an intricate and thorough method. When Conan Doyle introduces a distracting factor which might throw a doubt upon all Holmes mental abilities we see that Holmes is so involved in his methods that the slightest emotional change could tip him over to the wrong conclusion. Holmes' highly tuned and accurate mind is such that if anything dramatically changed, or was altered, it would change the entire outlook upon the crime. 'grit in a sensitive instrument, or crack in one of his high power lenses would not be more disturbing than a strong emotion in a narrative such as his' This gives a sense that if anything were to alter, the whole case could be solved, or go terribly wrong. Sherlock Holmes humours his acquaintances with his dry wit, on numerous occasions: 'my life is spent in one long effort to escape from the commonplaces of existence. However today I am focusing on a discourse community that relates to my major, criminal justice. In order for me to understand swales six characteristics I interviewed a homicide detective relating to criminal justice. A discourse community is a group of people involved in and communicating about a particular topic, issue, or in a particular field. A discourse community is defined by six characteristics. The six defining characteristics of a discourse community require a set of common goals, there must also be mechanisms of communications within the community as well as feedback among members. Genre, the fourth characteristic, describing the various methods of output. The last two are terminology, and expertise. In order to really understand that criminal justice is a discourse community, I had to do research, and interview an expert in the field. To be a part of a discourse community, one must be credible, possess factual knowledge and draw on the values of its members to be accepted into the community. At the same time a person must learn typical ways people in that community communicate and argue. They share a certain genre which is a type of writing. Members of discourse communities provide information and feedback that are imperative in order for that discourse community to grow. My interviewee, Carol Mims, is a child homicide detective. • 26. The Characteristics Of A Detective Fiction Detective Fiction Essay A detective fiction is a literary genre in form of a short story or novel that deals with crimes, usually murder and detectives are involved to seek out justice for the victims. The detectives involved in detective fictions can either be private, amateur, or police detectives. There are also other characters like the suspects and the side kicks. An amateur detective is a detective who has no license to operate as a private investigator neither is he/she a member of the police force. These detectives have a different profession, but are not trained in criminal investigation. They have a passion in crime and delivering justice to the society. On the other hand, a private detective also known as hard boiled is a male or female detective trained in criminal investigation. Dealing with crime is his/her profession, therefore, has good physical attributes and uses the gun efficiently. The two detectives differ in two ways; first, they differ in financial status, secondly they differ on how they use violence in their investigations. From there being shows about doctors, military, or even policemen. However, not everything in these shows is a very accurate portrayal of the real world. On the other hand, some of the things are real or based on something off the real world. Shows like "First 48," "COPS," and the movie "End of Watch" show the audience a glimpse at what real detective work might be like. My father works for Homeland Security; which would make him a direct source of how the real world is. I believe that "First 48," "COPS," and "End of Watch" do an effective job of depicting real world detective/ police work. This is important because television influences many of the decisions we make in our lives. "First 48" is a show that deals with detectives that are called to crime scenes. The show documents the first hours of homicides in different cities. Their job is to evaluate the scene; look for any clues that may be of help. This is a very important step in solving murders. They have to be on the lookout for foot prints, bullet casings, and many other things that could help solve a crime. Although the show isn't always accurate, it catches the essence of what criminal scene investigators actual do. "First 48" depicts the parts that would intrigue an audience, rather than have the audience watch the long process of what really happens. This phenomenon, known broadly as 'Nordic Noir,' is characterised by bleak, gothic landscapes, and obsessive and socially isolated protagonists who push themselves to solve the cases no one else seems to be able to solve. This chapter will illustrate how Nordic Noir deploys the film noir narrative tropes, and how it reimagined its heroes and heroines. Nordic Noir is a fairly recent phenomenon and travels outside of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are women in classic film noir with a similar defiant attitude, to whom the male hero often experiences a sexual attraction: the femme fatale. These women are studied as symbols of 'peculiar' power: carrying guns, smoking cigarettes, and going after what they want, similar to the men in these narratives (Gledhill, 1998, p. 24). The femme fatales are mysterious, ambiguous and most significantly: deadly. These women and their power are however mainly defined by their sexuality and the men often still hold the voice of authority – mainly through voice overs and flashbacks (Gledhill, 1998, p. 24). They are both desirable and dangerous to men (Kaplan, 1998, p. 16). The film noir's femme fatale has for a long time served as a record for anxieties about female sexuality and power, which will be discussed more deeply later in this chapter. The femme fatale fights against the male domination and often ends op losing her life or freedom. "The resistance of these femme fatales are always fatal, if not to herself, it will be to the men who fall for her" (Wager, 2005, p. 4). With the dangers that her sexual performance causes, the classic genre exposed the limitations of a female heroine. It suggests that terrible things would happen if men let these sexual women distract them from their quest, and that the power that these particular women hold, is profoundly dangerous. The sex and gender issues that derive from the femme fatale's presence supposedly trigger the inevitable demise of herself and the hero, but it is nonetheless important to notice that these early film noirs offered audiences a female character that, although destructive, is not weak, but ... • 40. Career Comparative Analysis Of ' Career ' Logan Montuori Professor St. Clair ENG 152 25 November 2016 Career Comparative Analysis I am always in search of new knowledge and understanding. I prefer analyzing situations instead jumping right into them. I have a relatively calm and collected personality, as I prefer to listen to others in order to obtain new knowledge that will then lead me to my own conclusions. I value justice above many other ideals. I don't feel comfortable with the unknown, which is why I am constantly looking for answers and explanations. These are all simple characteristics that the "What's Your Color?" assessment gave me. When I first saw this personality test I figured it was going to be extremely inaccurate as many of them usually are. Ironically and to my surprise, it was impressively spot on. Going down the list, I can agree with each and every characteristic about myself. This confirmed my top two careers to pursue. The first being a career in law enforcement as a detective, and the second being a career as a lawyer. After doing some research, I've concluded that becoming a lawyer is the superior option. For starters, a police detective isn't a standalone job one can simply jump right into after college. Becoming a police officer and a detective are simply stops along the road in the career path of law enforcement. However, before even becoming a police officer, one must undergo training at a police academy. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states, "Candidates for appointment usually ... The Subgenre Of The Genfield Genre The thriller genre has undergone many changes and phases throughout the past, which is evident in the changes within its subgenres, each of which has its own distinctions. Some subgenres of the thriller genre include the detective thriller and the suspense thriller. Alfred Hitchcock revolutionized the thriller genre during his lifetime. In fact, his work defined a whole subgenre of the thriller: the suspense thriller. The thriller genre has evolved and developed over the history of film and has changed throughout the postclassical and modernist periods. In the postclassical period, films would focus more on developing the character of the protagonist rather than the antagonist. The backstory and motives of the antagonist would not be a driving force in a film during that period. In the postclassical period, the elements of good and evil in the films are usually very distinct as well with little to no grey zone. However, as time passed, there was a transition from the postclassical period to the modernist period which also brought about changes in some of the aspects of cinema. During the modernist era, there was a greater emphasis on the antagonists of a film. Films would oftentimes give antagonists some more attention and backstory than they did before. There was also not as clear of a distinction between good and evil; there was oftentimes a grey zone which allows the audience to feel empathy for the antagonist. • 46. Social Media And Loneliness : A Little Mixture Of The... Literary critic Benjamin Roberts uses the gothic genre with a little mixture of the detective genre to critique the growing reliance on technology to communicate rather than actual human interaction. Roberts emphasizes his critique by bringing up the label our generation has been branded with "the loneliest [generation]" (2). Matt Pittman also argues this in his article "Social Media And Loneliness: Why An Instagram Picture May Be Worth More Than A Thousand Twitter Words", "It is surprising then that, in spite of this enhanced interconnectivity, young adults may be lonelier than other age groups, and that the current generation may be the loneliest ever" (155). "I"'s openness to the loneliness seems a little satirical, however, he's still trapped with what's making him insane. He tries to rationalize his preference for being isolated by saying "You might wonder why I locked myself into this white prison, well it's pretty simple I don't like my species" (Roberts 1), but in reality, technology has taken his ability to communicate normally as a human being. The Gothic genre emphasizes isolation something that "I" has done to himself. "I" seems to identify more with the characters on Netflix than the people in his classes. The elements of the Gothic genre continue when "I" contemplates his own sanity. "I"'s sanity is not only reflected in the questioning of it, but in the way his mind keeps shifting topics. • 50. The Police Procedural In Ed Mcbain's Cop Hater The police procedural is a recent addition to detective fiction. This is because "[b]efore the 1980s the police novel was a minor, and somewhat maligned, stepchild in the field of crime fiction."[5] As one of the early police procedural novels, Ed McBain's Cop Hater was a factor in how detective fiction came to embrace the police procedural. In doing so, it had to deal with the attitudes that caused cop characters to be considered unsuitable protagonists. This process was facilitated by efforts to make the police characters relatable, and the procedural methods they use accessible. In doing so, McBain wrote a novel that paved the way for acceptance of the police detective. The early detective novels were very much against the police. As was claimed within Cop Hater, "a cop is a symbol of law and order", which should make the police detective the most natural choice to be the detective. Yet in the earlier eras of detective fiction, the detectives typically worked outside of the law. Historically, the police were not publicly seen as a group which were competent enough to be trusted to deal with these matters. This may have been justified in context, given that the early constables mostly worked with the information others gave them, rather than seeking it themselves [6]. The early detectives were romanticised, often as geniuses, for working outside this seemingly corrupt system [1]. The issue of public opinion has lingered for the modern police novel to address. His first statement was "Never" he has never seen a criminal intention of murder or beatings of individuals. He said that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It just hasn't happened in his district. He said the movie was very good and it does show a side of corruption that does happen. He said murder is not usually a known corruption but taking things here and there are. For example if someone broke into a liquor store and the units at the scene are there taking notes and things they may take a few items for themselves. He said obviously these officers were dealt with later. He laughed and said how could you be so dumb. Because that situation did happen and the police ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A huge contribution to why Silence of the Lambs is a thriller film is the character of deranged genius Hannibal Lecter. Another thriller that falls into these two thriller subgenres and even replicates the Hannibal versus Starling situation almost identically is Christopher Nolan's 2008 release The Dark Knight. "Along with the story line about crime, there will usually be a personal story line so viewers have a chance to know the cops as characters" (Class Notes, para 5). This is best shown when the detective is meeting up for a date with his girlfriend who ended up not being able to come. While he was waiting at the bar a guy tried to fight him. He later finds out it was his girlfriend's ex–husband trying to cause friction between all of them. Elementary does not fit the blueprint for a typical cop show. The public is to believe that the clown was possibly harmful or bad when all along one of the City's public water workers was behind contaminating the water and hiring someone to do so. While this was happening, the clown saw him. Therefore, he got murdered. It was a line of crimes that happened but, the bad guy does not show up till middle/towards the end of the show. This gives Elementary a combination of multiple genre types that are similar to different types of cop shows. Conclusion Overall, Elementary is a show that does represent good vs. evil but, there is more too it then just that. It's not your typical blueprint cop show. When attempting to solve a crime, detectives conduct a criminal investigation that seeks all the facts about a crime to help determine the truth: what happened and who is responsible. After all this occurs the case is disposed of. These steps are not always followed in this exact order, and sometimes steps are eliminated. In conclusion, a detective’s job is basically to clear or dispose of a case (Bennett, 1981). Detectives, when conducting an investigation, should first determine whether a crime has been committed. Thus, a detective who is familiar with the different crimes and their elements (what must occur for an act to be called a specific type of crime), knows immediately if a crime has actually been committed. When a detective receives a case, he or she conducts a preliminary investigation. When establishing a case, a preliminary investigation consists of different aspects.
