In ancient Greek religion, there is not one God but numerous. The main Gods and Goddesses are
known as the twelve Olympians who were led by Zeus. These Gods and Goddesses came into power
after they overthrew the elder gods, the Titans. The twelve Olympians names were: Zeus, Hera,
Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Athena, Artemis, Apollo, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Ares, and Hermes. These
were the main gods that the ancient Greeks would worship and build temples for. These Gods and
Goddesses held a very prominent role in the ancient Greek culture. The most well–known God is
Zeus; he is known as "The King of the Gods" on Mount Olympus. In Greek mythology, there are
many Gods and Goddesses; however, Zeus is the most important god in ancient Greek culture
because of his back–story, winning the titan wars, and his superiority.
The first reason that proves Zeus is the most important god is his back–story. He was the one to take

imprisoned his brothers after gaining authority, and later swallowed his children whole in fear of
being overthrown just like he had done to his father. This action did not work due to his hidden son,

The Theogony was written between the 8th and 7th century BCE by the philosopher Hesiod. This
epic poem described the birth of the ancient Greek Gods, and how the heaven and earth came to be.
The Gods in the Theogony relate to traditions held by the Greeks, and their daily lives. They also
use the gods to explain unexplainable phenomenon's that occurred during their era, and give piece to
those who were frightened. All the gods in the Theogony had a meaning and a unique story of how
they came to be, but one section of this epic poem stood out to me. This would be the story family
line of Uranus to Zeus, they happen to repeat history generation after generation, this shocked me
because we live in a society that strives to stay away from events that may repeat the past. Looking
back into Zeus's heritage to the time of Uranus, we can see a very clear trend instilled into the gods
of killing their offspring, or the offspring killing their parents to take thrown. Looking at the
beginning of the Hesiod we see this happening when Cronus the son of Uranus castrates his father
spilling his blood on earth. After this incident was when Cronus takes his father's thrown and
learned a prophecy that he too would be overthrown and killed by his son, so he took desperate
measures by swallowing all of his children in an attempt to rid of any chance of being over thrown.

Throughout history there have been few figures that have fascinated writers and readers more than
Zeus the Greek ruler of the Olympian gods (??). Like all notable characters throughout history
Zeus's rise to power wasn't without turmoil. Often a seizure of power results from the current leader
being viewed as an unjust or even a tyrant. A tyrant is defined as an "absolute ruler unrestrained by
law or constitution" (Miriam Webster's Dictionary). These rulers are often oppressive and respond to
authoritative challenge swiftly and brutally. Kronos was the leader of the Titans before Zeus seized
the power from him. A prophecy predicted that Kronos would be overthrown by his son, paranoid
Kronos swallowed his and Rheas children in an attempt to prevent its fulfilment (Hesiod, p.17). The
tyrannical rule of Kronos, Zeus' father, lead Earth (Gaia) and the existing gods to wage war against
Kronos and the Titans. After successfully removing Kronos, Zeus was viewed as a "saviour from
chilling peril" (Hesiod, p.22) and elected as Kronos' replacement. Zeus believed that Kronos held
too much power and felt that there was an unequal distribution among the gods. After successfully
seizing power Zeus rewarded the gods that fought with him. He distributed powers and duties
amongst them. This delegation of duties created a new order and a hierarchy that was fair among the

So hercules went to atlas and offered to hold the sky while atlas got his apples for him. When atlas
returned with the apples he attempted to trick Heracles into carrying the sky permanently by offering
to deliver the apples himself, as anyone who purposely took the burden must carry it forever.
Heracles, suspecting Atlas did not intend to return, pretended to agree to Atlas' offer, asking only
that Atlas take the sky again for a few minutes so Heracles could rearrange his cloak as padding on
