This research paper will concentrate on the innovation of housing microfinance. Housing
microfinance is helping to give loans to individuals that are suffering from poor infrastructure. This
type of microfinance will aid in increasing the level of living standards. This paper will analyze the

loans (Rooftops Canada, Web). In a mere span of two years this organization has grown by 292

For the past fifty years the shift from meeting the housing needs of the poor through government
projects–based housing to a more individual approach, has been slowly implemented. Housing
vouchers now enable underprivileged populations to move from high–poverty, segregated
neighborhoods to more un–segregated, low–poverty neighborhoods. Low–poverty neighborhoods
have less crime, better opportunities for employment, and more diverse schooling options. Some
housing advocates however, contend that housing assistance is unnecessary and is an income
subsidy that should be combined with other social safety nets (Clark, W. 2008).
Literature Review
The Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 enacted a voucher program, the Section 8
Housing Allowance program that has since been renamed the Housing Choice Voucher program
(HCV). In the original program vouchers were sent directly to qualifying landlords, however, in
1988, the terms were changed so that the tenants now receive the vouchers. Tenants were given
more leeway in where and how the vouchers could be used (Teater, 2008).

Today, there are many problems that plague the world. And unfortunately, poverty is one of them.
Many people chose to ignore this issue, not only on a global scale, but also on a local scale. In
suburban areas, homelessness isn 't as obvious, but it is still an issue. Just because you do not see as
many homeless people on the streets as you do in Chicago, doesn 't mean it's not a problem here in
Elgin. There are a couple of shelters in the Elgin area, but they have limitations as to how long they
are open to the homeless. Usually, the homeless can only access them at night time between the
hours of seven pm to seven am and they have to go through a long process in order to stay. There are
other resources offered to them at these shelters, but none of the options include permanent housing.
Shelters are great for temporary relief but do not reduce the problem of people not having a
permanent place to stay. Having supportive housing will be a place that is stable for the homeless
and will provide them with the help they need. I feel that permanent housing and supportive housing
that is immediately available should be created for homeless and low income people.
Those who are against the idea of creating this kind of housing, say that it would cost the taxpayers
too much money to accomplish. The possibility is that their property value can go down and other
tax funded resources may be used to support the housing for the homeless. The taxes for the

The completed Eastside and Bond apartment complex in East Liberty is perched directly above the
MLK East Busway transit stop, and is a block from amenities like Target, Giant Eagle and a plethora
of restaurants. In a sense, the apartment complex with 360 brand–new units is a perfect example of

essentially large ditches on the corner of neighborhood streets. When a water basin sits in the middle
of a neighborhood it is not a functional part of the surrounding environment and can become an

Childcare would be a main concern, and affordable or even free childcare would be offered for the
residents children. This would allow for women to work outside of the home or go to school without
the added stress of worrying where there children are, who is taking care of them, and how much
that care is costing them. Childcare would also be beneficial to the children by giving them structure

How to end Homelessness in D.C.?
The chasm between the law and, the law as applied in practice is vast. The law provides funding for
homeless people, but this often leads to discrimination because it is so difficult to gain access to
these funds. Roscoe Pound, one of the most cited legal scholars of the 20th century, points out how
the "laws on the street" too often differ from the "laws on the books" and result in discrimination.
Homeless people suffer from government bureaucracy that makes it almost impossible for a
homeless person to successfully receive aid without help from others. The application process for
applying for aid is both strenuous and difficult, that requires a level of literacy skills and legal
expertise that would likely preclude an otherwise healthy person from becoming homeless in the
first place. In order to fix this injustice, experiments in the field of healthcare and government–
policy, must be applied to help the homeless in our community in D.C.. To solve the homelessness
epidemic, we need to expand collaborations between institutions that already exist in D.C.to help the
homeless and create a "housing first" plan that provides both rapid housing for the temporarily
homeless and permanent supportive housing for those who are chronically homeless. This policy
change may seem intuitive "give homeless people housing", however detractors argue that it is a
naive approach to a complex issue that also costs too much.

with a social worker who can get them all of the benefits they need. It also gives them access to an
onsite clinic to assess their medical and mental health. Some homeless seniors lost touch with family

Democratic races for Mayor and some city council districts. We limited our scope to six candidates.
Originally, they included former Mayor Sheila Dixon, State Senator Catherine Pugh, attorney
Elizabeth Embry, businessman David Warnock, City Councilmember Nicholas Mosby, and City
Councilmember Carl Stokes. Based on a Baltimore Sun/University of Baltimore poll, these
candidates placed in the top six within a crowded field. On April 13, however, Councilmember
Mosby dropped out of the race and pledged his support to Senator Pugh. Therefore, we included the
top five remaining candidates. Criminal justice reform and the economy were the issues candidates
discussed the most on the campaign trail. Given the events of Freddie Gray's murder and the city's
high unemployment rate, the emphasis on these issues is understood. Yet, these discussions did not
complement our research. Between January 2016 and primary day, only one housing related forum
was held. This forum focused on neighborhood revitalization, but did not address renter issues. At

Introduction Participating in the overnight shelter at the UU Fellowship of San Luis Obispo, was an
eye opening experience. When people think of homeless people, right away they think of the
stereotypical description of a homeless person, such as dirty, on drugs, or mentally ill. I was one of
those people who had a stereotypical picture in my mind, but participating in this shelter changed
my perceptive on the description of homeless. As my shift began, I realized for the most part the
shelter was composed of single women, and two families, including the fathers. Most of the people
were already resting in bed, therefore there wasn't as much interaction between the volunteers and
the clients. I was able to interact with one of the families because they were out in the hallway with
their little boy. From this family, I learned that the father had a job, but he didn't earn enough to
provide housing for his family. The mom didn't work because she was taking care of her little boy
and she was 7 months pregnant. Since the shelter is only provided for overnight stay, the mom and
the little boy sometimes stay at the boyfriend's mother house during the day. In addition, I noticed
that these people have been at the shelter for quite some time. They were interacting among each
other as if they knew who they were, and I noticed each individual had their own specific bed.

THE BEDROOM TAX – IS IT FAIR? Mention the words "bedroom tax" in conversation and the
responses range from firsthand accounts of people being evicted from their homes to newly
bereaved pensioners faced with the prospect of losing their homes because they can't afford the rent.

Across the United States, vacant homes are sitting useless and have a negative impact on the
housing market. According to census.gov (2018), at the end of 2017, the vacancy rates of homes
were 6.9% for rentals and 1.6% for homeowners. Thousands of homes are sitting empty when they
could be demolished to benefit the housing market or repurposed to benefit someone else. This is a
problem that needs to be solved so that homeowners, the economy, and communities can reap the
benefits. Although vacant homes are a large issue, it is important that the pros and cons of
bulldozing homes are heavily weighed before choosing whether or not demolition is performed.

Renovating would mean that the money being used is not wasted on destroying a home, but put into
something beneficial to society. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development (2014), "Empty homes can become assets in neighborhood stabilization and
revitalization that can be renovated and reoccupied." After renovation, the homes can be rented or
sold as commercial properties to small business owners to be used as an office or work space.
Furthermore, these businesses would attract people to the communities that they are located in,
which would bring in even more money for the area. The business that purchases the property would
need workers on site as well; therefore more jobs would be brought into the surrounding community.
If the bank or government did not want to spend the time and effort it takes to renovate and sell
properties, there are companies that buy homes that are in need of revitalizing so that money can be
brought into the economy when the home is sold. Furthermore, if the bank could not financially

The Benefits of a Gender-Neutral Housing Facility
Introduction There are at least 54 universities and colleges which have, in the past 10 years, instated
the gender–neutral housing and option for the students (National Student, 2012). These options have
been implemented in various different ways in the colleges and universities. There are universities
such as the Brandeis University that only provides the upper–class students with the option of
gender–neutral housing whereas, in the Hampshire College, students from any year can have any
roommate that they want even if they are from the opposite sex. Rutgers University also allows the
upper–class students with the option of living in gender–neutral housing; this option was
implemented in the university after a student committed suicide as he was being victimized by a
homophobic. In case of Harvard University only the self–identified transgender students are allowed
to live in the gender–neutral houses. The possible reason for this increasing trend of gender–neutral
housing in many colleges and universities is the fact that these universities have accepted the fact
that the sex–segregated housing can't fulfill the needs of all the students studying and living there
(Students for a Democratic Society, 2012). This paper thus analyzes the impact that the growing

Most of the people were already resting in bed, therefore there wasn't as much interaction between the volunteers and the clients. I was able to interact with one of the families because they were out in the hallway with their little boy. From this family, I learned that the father had a job, but he didn't earn enough to provide housing for his family. The mom didn't work because she was taking care of her little boy and she was 7 months pregnant. Since the shelter is only provided for overnight stay, the mom and the little boy sometimes stay at the boyfriend's mother house during the day. In addition, I noticed that these people have been at the shelter for quite some time. They were interacting among each other as if they knew who they were, and I noticed each individual had their own specific bed.
