brand was purchased by the Quaker Oats Company in 1983, which, in turn, was bought by PepsiCo
in 2001. Gatorade products were made available for sale in more than 80 countries as of 2010, and

was curious as to why many of his players were affected by the heat and contracted heat related
illnesses. He worked together with a group of physicians from the university and discovered two
factors as to why the players were feeling like this during practices and games. They found that the
fluids and electrolytes the players lost through sweat were not being replaced and the amounts of
carbs in the players' bodies used for energy were not being replenished. They then went to the lab
and came up with a "balanced carbohydrate–electrolyte" beverage called Gatorade that would
replace the key components lost during sweating and exercising (Figure 1).
The next step was to introduce the product to the team. That season the Gators started to win and
finished the season 7–4. The following season, they finished 9–2 and ended up winning the Orange
Bowl, their first in school history (Figure 1). Other schools and universities started to hear about
