Reflection On Community-Based Human Service Organizations
Community–based human services organizations are essential in addressing human service needs
and often provide assistance in instances of crisis. These agencies are involved with entities such as
domestic violence shelters, job training, employment programs, child care centers, foster care, child
protection, prisoner reentry and day programs for seniors and the developmentally and intellectually
disabled (Norris–Tirrell, 2014). These services are often play pivotal roles in promotion of the
overall quality of life for the vulnerable individuals and communities that are served. Non–profit
human service organizations have historically been challenged during times of economic down–
turn; to find or maintain adequate funding (Mosely, Maronick, ... Show more content on

I would feel compelled to exhaust all efforts to partner with other government agencies, private
businesses and the community to raise funds in an attempt to prevent closing one of my centers. I
would have to look at potential ways to decrease my expenditures. This may mean that I had to
avoid adding any new programs or even reduce programs that I currently offer to only the most
essential and beneficial ones. I would have to determine if it would be more cost effective to
consolidate jobs and reduce workforce across the board or to close a center. Laying off a couple of
individual employees would not be ideal but it would affect less people than closing an office that
serves entire communities. There is also the potential to allow employees whose jobs do not have to
be in a dedicated office to become telecommuters. Promoting staff to telecommute would reduce the
expenditures that are spent on rent, utilities, building insurance and other expenses associated with

A Market Based Approach For Community Development Essay
Community is established locally but community development is a process that includes actors from
inside and outside of the community to achieve sustainability. My previous essays have addressed
the progression of community development from place–based attachment, organizing and advocacy
to addressing the need and effect of government involvement. The final stop on the continuum of the
community development is to analyze market–based approaches to community development. This
paper will look at how a market based approach to community development is an important
component of community development because it is the appropriate response to the current socio–
economic, and political context that our country is in. A market–based approach provides a
mechanism to define relationships and allocate economic resources to create systemic change within
communities. increasing opportunities for social inclusion and economic sustainability
Social Sustainability
1. True community development exemplifies the relationship between the local actor and the
interconnectedness that needs to exist to accomplish change.
Market based approaches to community development involve those who participate in the social
economy i.e. cooperatives, social enterprises etc. Locally tied, these market based approaches tap
into social capital as key business practice. Broadly speaking most cooperatives would not succeed
if it were not for the collective membership of the local community. Cooperatives

Entrepreneurship Is A Good For The Organization,...
Entrepreneurship is a term that has reentered the public vernacular over the last few years, many
times in reference to what is wrong with America but what it means is rarely defined. Furthermore,
it is generally agreed that more Entrepreneurship is a desirable trait but how to go about encouraging
it is again a point of contention. This paper will address a specific facet of entrepreneurship and
attempt to discover what are the key drivers to foster an entrepreneurial spirit from childhood.
Definitions of entrepreneurship almost always involve the risk taking within the business world.
Businessdictionary.com states "The capacity and willingness to develop, organize and manage a
business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit." Why we want individuals to
create new companies or even to grow products and ideas within an existing company is beyond the
scope of this paper be we are going to assume that over all the outcome of this behavior is good for
the organization, community, or country. There is little dispute that the United States was known for
this behavior over the last two hundred years and it may be something that we are starting to lose. At
least it is a behavior that we want to continue to foster. Literature Review We are surmising that
exposure to a successful home business or a role model in an entrepreneurial venture will have a
larger impact on predicting if a person develops into an entrepreneur than many other determinate

Circle K International Volunteering Report
As I have mentioned in my application I am a part of a service organization called Circle K
International. At the start, I never was really interested in doing any volunteering service. I said to
myself, "Hey, if I do community service my college applications would look better!" That was my
mentality when I joined, but it changed when I went to my first volunteering event. I went to a park
near the city of Mission Viejo, I didn't know what to expect. When I arrived, I heard that we were
going to plant trees throughout the park and remove trash around the area. It made me super excited
to plant the trees as I have never done or seen someone do it before. During the event, I was talking
to people both new and old, and I got to connect with them

Nonprofit Organizations: Community Analysis
Volunteerism plays a critical role in addressing community, national, and global issues.
Volunteerism not only enables the smooth functioning of many organizations, it also contributes to
the maintenance of social cohesion. Individuals give their time and services willingly without
expecting any compensation or benefits. Over the past few years, volunteerism in the U.S. has
declined from an estimated 50% of U.S. adults collectively logging volunteer hours equivalent to
five million fulltime jobs to a recent low of only 25% of Americans engaged in volunteer work
according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014. The workforce behind many nonprofit
organizations is the blood, sweat, and tears of a sizeable volunteer base. For example, the ... Show

Individuals serve for a multitude of reasons, with today's volunteers serving in a variety of ways and
with various expectations for their investment of energy and time. However, not all individuals who
serve gravitate to the term "volunteer." For example, students may refer to internships, while
educators may seek service–learning opportunities. A national study of first–year undergraduates
found that: students over age 20 were more likely to volunteer than traditional–age first year
students; African American, Latino, and Asian American students were more likely to volunteer than
Caucasian students; and students with higher levels of academic achievement (SAT or ACT scores)
were more likely to volunteer than their lower–achieving peers. (Moore, Warta, & Erichsen, 2014).
Men tend to describe their service by the function, a coach while women have historically been
more connected to the term volunteer. Some religiously motivated volunteers feel called to serve,
while others say they are compelled to live out their faith. Data from 534 volunteers of an
international aid and development agency in the United Kingdom revealed a positive relationship
between prosocial values and time spent volunteering (Shantz, Saksida, & Alfes, 2014). The results
also show that volunteer engagement fully mediated the relationship between the value motive and
time spent volunteering, and the strength of the mediated effect varied as a function of volunteers'

Effective Management Practices in Community Service...
Community service organizations are essential for the strength and liveliness of our communities.
Not only do they enrich the quality of life of several citizens, but they also exemplify the highest
societal values that should be extended to all citizens. In the current ever–changing environment
caused by shrinking resources, increased competition for funding and skilled staff, and demands for
accountability, organizations are being forced to look at new and creative ways to influence the
work environment so that they can effectively deliver services Trautmann, Maher, & Motley, 2007).
In doing so, it is imperative that they utilize sound management practices in order to ensure ongoing
success and a continued provision of services. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To help ensure that they work together to achieve the organization's mission, the board of directors
and executive director should develop a collaborative partnership in which each understands the
distinctions between board governance and executive management, as well as the various roles and
responsibilities of each: Failure to do so can result in the manipulation of the board of directors on
the part of the executive director, as well as the micromanagement of the executive director on the
part of the board (Brody, 2005).
Organizational Planning Mission and vision. The goals of an organization are often made apparent
through their mission statements and vision statements, which are linked to the values of the
organization and its vision for the future (Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, 2005; Villinger, 2009).
Covey (1991) states that the purpose of the mission statement "attempts to encompass...the core
values of the organization; it creates a context that gives meaning, direction, and coherence to
everything else (p. 295). In order that they may be functional, mission statements should be short so
that they can be memorized, and yet complete enough that they will direct the goals of the
organization and cover all aspects of the organization's responsibilities

Community Intervention Case Study
Although each person is an individual, we all share common characteristics that are similar.
Formation of a community occurs when people with similar beliefs, ideas, or traditions congregate
together in a specific location (American Heritage Dictionary, 2011). Members of the community
use collaboration, or working together, to provide resources to everyone in the group. For me,
collaboration of the members of the community was the most important concept. As community
nurses, our goal is to assess the health needs of those around us and seek ways to improve their
health (Nies & McEwen, 2011, p.91). Working together with other individuals or organizations,
such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland, is an effective method of increasing the success of a
community intervention. By assessing the needs of the community first and then focusing on
developing and implementing the intervention for a specific target group, the members can
collaborate on the best approaches. Speaking with the director of the BGCC helped our group focus
on the potential health needs of the children at their facility and enabled us to create a specific ...

learned during this project was to focus on the result of the intervention first. As a group, we needed
to determine what the goal of the intervention was for the target group in order to determine how to
create the education portion of the project. During the first few discussions, the goal changed several
times. Another aspect that I learned in developing and implementing a community intervention is to
make sure that there is clear, concise communication between members to ensure everyone is aware

such as caroling at nursing homes during Christmas time, making cards for soldiers overseas or
collecting canned goods. As I have grown up, so has my contribution to the organizations I work

A Community Service At The Corporation For National And...
According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, the state of Nebraska spends
61.3 million hours a year doing community service. It also take 20 hours to learn and know
something very well, according to Forbes (Schawbel). With those two facts in mind, Nebraskan's
could have potentially learned 306,500 new things a year volunteering. When you 're introduced to
something new, you will gain a lot experience or knowledge in that new area. Therefore, when we
are spending that much time with our community, we will learn a lot about the people living in our
community and test what we thought we already knew based on stereotypes. While giving yourself
to your community during community service, one may find themselves further grasping, becoming
a part of, and deviating norms throughout their involvement. I have taken part in a community
service for many years that has taught me many things and given me insight into the community that
I live in.

Harvesters Community Food Network
Reaping the Harvest
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to
drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in." –Matthew 25:35
Community service, as I have come to learn, is all about taking the initiative to help someone in
need, no matter their situation. As the verse Matthew 25:35 says above, it is our job to share God's
love through serving those who are hurting right in front of us. These people are strangers, we may
not know them, but that does not mean they should not be helped. Over the course of my life I have
had the opportunity to participate in a multitude of service projects, but the one I am most passionate
about is the Harvesters Community Food Network.
Harvesters Community Food Network is an organization that "provides food and related household
products to more than 620 not–for–profit agencies" around the Kansas City metropolitan area

live in households that do not qualify for federal nutrition programs" ("Harvesters"). My heart
breaks every time I hear there are children starving in the world, but it is even more heartbreaking to
know there are children in my hometown that are struggling to live off of the very little food they
are provided. This is why I love this program because nothing is more fulfilling than seeing the eyes

Defining Member Roles and Responsibilities
The community organization project our research team chose was LRADAC. The process of
researching background information about the organization went well. Each team member
contributed to finding background information about LRADAC. Our project manager, Allison
Atkins, met with our research team at the beginning of the semester. We all chose Courtney to be the
liaison between Ms. Atkins and the group. Ms.Atkins stated, she had high expectations for the group
and she was willing to meet with us during the project. Initially there were not distinct roles for each
group member. Everyone's role became more defined when it was time to write the group papers.
We all met as a group to choose the part of the paper we wanted to write. However, if a person was
not in class when the parts were chosen they were assigned the remaining parts. The responsibilities
of each research team member was not explicitly stated. I had high expectations for my group. Since
we were in a masters level program, I expected everyone's part of our paper to be turned in at the
time we agreed and a great representation of masters level writing. Whenever there was not a person
holding up their portion of the paper I did reach out to them, through text messaging, email and

the paper. During this community organization project, I felt as though I babysat more often

My Community Service
Going to many different private schools during my elementary and middle school years, I had the
opportunity to do many special things in my community most students did not have access to.
Though all of the schools were very different, they all had the common value of service before self
and gave their students numerous ways to help the school and community. From visiting nursing
homes, to playing with the band at school fundraisers, to being paired up as mentors with younger
students, I always had my hands busy providing someone in need. One of the biggest parts of my
community service was visits to those in assisted living. Those visits taught me an immense amount
about the importance of reaching out, especially to those who have been isolated from the outside
world. Just the act of visiting and singing Christmas carols, or simply talking to them brought so
much joy to the entire facility and improved the residents' days. Though I may not have had the
most polished singing voice, the happiness our miniature concerts brought far surpassed the
embarrassment I felt scratching out the notes. On one occasion, our little group managed to get an
entire facility participating in an exciting rendition of "She'll be Comin' 'Round the Mountain," staff
and residents alike were overjoyed to be participating in the music and thrill of it all. One visit, not
long before Christmas, our school enjoyed a special activity day and had the opportunity to play

How Human Services Affect Communities And Organizations
Abstract
In this paper, we will be discussing how human services affect communities and organizations. This
will include personal and political empowerment and how human service professionals are involved
in the different social systems. We will also discuss how the social system responds to things such as
sexual abuse and delinquency. We will learn about the roles and responsibilities human service
workers have in the macro environment as well as understanding functionalism and theory to
poverty. All of these things will give us a better understanding of how the human service
professionals affect daily life.
When it comes to communities and organizations, human services professionals play a huge role.
The more help a community has to offer the better the people are. Human services professionals are
those who are in charge of helping with basic needs of clients. This could include but is not limited
to food, housing, emergency assistance, healthcare, nursing home issues, etc. Communities, who
show interest and keep up with the demands and needs of their residents, succeed far greater than
those who don't. Making sure residents are informed of services offered and where they can find the
help they need, can relieve a lot of stressful situations. Human services professionals have personal,
interpersonal and political empowerment. This means that they have the ability to help people,
whether it's an individual, family or community with what they need.

Community Organization Intensifies Community Stability and...
Crisis in community is a regular phenomenon. The need for community organizing addressing
community crises is, therefore, evident and perpetual. Bill Lee (2011) suggests that a pragmatic
approach to community organizing intensifies community actions addressing community crises
associated with the problem of inequality, environmental degradation and crises, and economic
instabilities. This paper intends to explore the influences and effects of "Pragmatic of Community
organization" on innovation and vice versa.
Bill Lee identifies community as "a complex notion of the way people live and connect with each
other" (Lee, B., 2011, p.20), and defines "community organization as a social intervention which
seeks to maximize the ability of oppressed or disadvantaged people to take action and influence
their environment: ....."(Lee B., 2011, p.100). Lee also suggests that a pragmatic community
organizing should have specific objectives that include community participation, sense of

Example Of Ethnographic Essay
This study will employ ethnographic research methods for data collection and it will be comprised
of:
Participant Observation:
In this research, I will utilize an observation method to record behaviors, activities, teaching
methods, language of instruction, community centers and home learning environments, teachers'
awareness of refugee students' needs, parents' educational support, the refugee students' previous
educational experiences, language barrier, and educational resources. Moreover, I will also observe
and record participants' physical environment, socio–economics and cultural milieu. The
observations will be conducted in two community centers and three family houses. The families will
be observed for seven to eight hours a day ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Introduction and Appreciation Meeting:
At the beginning of the data collection, a church leader will introduce the researcher with the
participants. It will also provide a chance for the researcher to explain the research aims,
participants' rights, and voluntarily participation policy. At the end of the data collection, the
researcher will also have a meeting with the participants, wherein the researcher will express his
gratitude to the participants, with some gifts. The meeting will also give an opportunity for the
researcher to share the findings with the participants.
Reflective Field Notes:
Throughout my data collections I will be jotting down my emic and etic perspectives about their
educational experience. For this study, it is essential for the researcher to keep a record of reflective
field notes. Since, refugee participants may have seen or experienced some violence and persecution
in their home county and, currently, may have been facing challenges as well. And, sometimes, they
may not be able to describe their unpleasant experiences and often pause or have tears in their eyes.
Therefore, the researcher's reflective field notes will attempt to record those instances on a

Transnational Criminal Organization and the Law...
The problem of transnational criminal organization poses some unique challenges to the law
enforcement community. The scope of these organizations' activities and personnel creates
exponentially more work for law enforcement than relatively isolated or contained criminal acts by
individuals or small groups. Random and personal crimes committed by individuals can usually be
handled by police at the local level, as the investigation is limited to the known crime (or crimes)
that have been committed and reported. In these cases, identifying and apprehending the perpetrator
is possible through investigation of the evidence of the specific instance of crime. This is not the
case with large criminal organizations. The scale of criminal ... Show more content on

These offenders may form groups and teams and play different roles (Xu and Chen). These groups
and teams may have vastly different functions, such as production, transportation, distribution and
marketing of illegal goods and services, as well as the eventual laundering of the ill–gotten proceeds
from the illegal activity (Jiminez). Network analysis helps analysts determine the activities being
conducted by the criminal enterprise and who all is involved and in what capacity. In the end,
criminal network analysis integrates information from multiple crime incidents and even multiple
sources to discover regular patterns about the structure, organization, operation, and information
flow in criminal networks (Xu and Chen). This general intelligence on the groups will aid
investigative efforts and facilitate collection of evidence for use in court.
Several software programs (like i2's Analyst's Notebook) have been developed to automate and
streamline criminal network analysis. Although these programs automate much of the analysis
(especially of large amount of raw data) there are still some basic techniques that occur "behind the
scenes" in the software, that could still be done manually by the analyst. The first step is creating an
association matrix of known and suspected associations between members of the criminal
organization (Precision Computing Intelligence).

Peace Building through Community Involvement
For it isn't enough to talk of peace, one must believe in it.
And it isn't enough to believe in peace, one must work at it.
–Eleanor Roosevelt Over the course of history, society, economy, and political affiliations have all
exhibited devastating impacts sought on by violence in conflict. As seen in the media, violence in all
forms, whether it be direct violence or structural violence, have had reoccurring themes of halted or
negative development and have been linked to psychological trauma in those who have personally
witnessed or been a victim of violent acts. Although conflict is inevitable in a world with a variety
of different cultural beliefs, political systems and resource availability, there are a variety of ways in
which conflicts can be resolved without resorting to the use of violence. Within many fragile
contexts, or "state structures that lack political will or capacity to provide the basic functions needed
for poverty reduction, development and to safeguard the security and human rights of their
population," (OECD DAC, 2007), communities have maintained impressive resiliency qualities.
Through the development of community–based peace building organizations, communities that exist
within fragile contexts would have the tools to maintain resiliency and sustainability during violent
conflicts. The term peace building was originally coined by Johan Galtung in the 1970's and has
since been redefined by several international institutions and NGOs (United

Application Of Building A Community Based Organization
I worked as a student intern with Prerana in Mumbai, India during 2007–2008. Prerana is a
registered voluntary non–governmental organization (NGO), which recognizes itself both as an
organization and a social movement. The basic aim of the organization is to work with women and
their children affected by trafficking. The scope of the agency ranged from working at micro–
individual to macro–structural level reforms (Patkar & Patkar, 2000). At the time I started my
internship at the organization it was in transition and was looking to expand their scope of service
provision. As an intern I was asked to work directly with the clients and help build a community–

Shanti shared she was born into a lower middle class family and her parents were agricultural

her physically and sexually for over two years. One day he brought home a friend and asked her to
have an intercourse with him. After she refused he threw her out of the house. Shanti describes this
was the lowest point in her life; she has no one to turn to, no money, no place to stay. Just when she
was about to give up in life she befriended a man from India. He claimed to love her and marry her.
In her innocence she said yes and moved to India with him. On arriving in Mumbai, she was sold to
a pimp and asked to work as a sex worker and live in a brothel. Her miseries had just started. Within
a year she found a lover in a customer, who got her pregnant and ran away with all her earnings.
Now with a child to take care of and no money at her disposal, she succumbed to alcohol and drugs.
During this time, practicing as a sex worker she came in contact with a social worker from Prerana

Social Isolation And Its Impact On Social Capital
Social Isolation and Its Impact on Social Capital The "surprising" finding of Rankin and Quane does
to an extent show the limits of previous research, such as Putnam, on social isolation, because it
does not take into consideration economic and race. Although, Rankin and Quane findings show
high levels of engagement among people in poorer neighborhoods the findings are not significant
enough to change the notion that social capital is eroding and therefore it is increasing social
isolation amongst Americans. In this essay I'm going to talk about how Rankin and Quane findings
actually correlate with Putnam's and other author point of view on the erosion of social capital.
Some of the examples we will be looking into is the effect Mothers have on social capital, the loss
of trust amongst Americans, Lack of Network communication, Effects that trust, reciprocation, and
obligation have on social isolation and social capital. Social isolation plays a big role in social
capital, economic status and race. Social isolation refers to "the lack of contact or of sustained
interaction with individuals and institutions that represent mainstream society ' ' (Wilson qtd Rankin
& Quane 4). Rankin and Quane believed that African Americans who are from poor families lacked
connections with "successful" people and therefore were socially isolated. This is because they were
not associated with people who finished college or people who had a stable job. This affects social
capital

Persuasive Speech About Youth Suicide
Nicole: Man it would just warm my heart. I know too many people who have lost children. I know
too many people here in the Manitou Springs school district. There were two youth who took their
lives in one year. I mean it hits home across the nation of course across the globe. You study suicide
rates for a variety of other causes across the globe, but it's everywhere. El Paso County has one of
the highest rates of youth suicide so yeah I mean I would feel like I was actually providing true
public and community service by just doing as much as I possibly could to support families in order
to prevent that and to just bring some awareness to that. Half of it is just awareness and the ability to
have the conversation around it
Andrew: I think that that's huge Nicole and I think that's something that should really be talked
about and needs to be talked about. I also think as we're looking over not just messaging, but also
fundraising networks, we've certainly seen an increase in youth homelessness in Manitou and
neighboring Colorado Springs and I think as you stated there's been an increase youth suicide and
just coming from my experience as a gay man I think there's some connections there. There would
be a lot of people in the LGBTQ community interested in helping people who are = committed to
those sort of issues with first being that LGBTQ youth make up about forty percent of the homeless
population and thus are more prone to teen suicide so I mean looking for different demographic and
groups whether it be looking at the LGBTQ community or the Latino community or whatnot I think
you know it is not just good for outreach and messaging to those communities, but also potentially
fundraising bases as well.
Nicole: Absolutely. I'm so glad you brought that up because Urban Peak is an organization we have
down here. It's an amazing organization that deals with youth homelessness and I know the director
and communicate with her regularly. In fact, I just saw her at an event. Citizens Project is another
one that I attend their annual breakfast every year. I've got to know several of those folks and they
are very vocal and outspoken of the LGBTQ community so that's a great point we have several

Healthcare Professional Organization And Community Service
Healthcare Professional Organization and Community Service: Review and Analyses
Membership within healthcare professional organizations and community service organizations can
be very beneficial to one's career within healthcare management. In this paper, I will review and
analyze three healthcare professional organizations: the American Association of Healthcare
Administrative Management, the Health Care Administrators Association, and the Association for
Healthcare Administrative Professionals. I will identify the key characteristics that make each
organization unique. Additionally, I will address the advantages and disadvantages of joining each of
these organizations. In the final section, I will briefly describe the American Red Cross and discuss
how volunteering within the community can help one develop essential skills necessary to excel in a
career within healthcare management.
The American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management (AAHAM) is a professional
organization that aims to educate and certify healthcare professionals in areas of reimbursement,
admitting and registrations, data management, medical records, and patient relations (American
Association of Healthcare Administrative Management, 2015). Additionally, AAHAM members
have access to a space for networking and to a job bank for assistance in their career search for a
moderate membership fee of only $190 per year (American Association of Healthcare

Community-Based Human Services Organization: A Case Study

30% reduction. The 30% reduction means that one out of the seven communities we serve will not
have the aid they are used to receiving. The 30% reduction means that the services of some
dedicated workers from one of those seven communities will be without employment due to the
reduction. Most importantly, the 30% reduction means that our commitment to the communities we
serve will have to be reduced and that's the sacrifices that we are trying

Entrepreneurship : An Organization, Community, Or Country?
LDR 280
Introduction
Entrepreneurship is a term that has reentered the public vernacular over the last few years, many
times in reference to what is wrong with America but what it means is rarely defined. Furthermore,
it is generally agreed that more Entrepreneurship is a desirable trait but how to go about encouraging
it is again a point of contention. This paper will address a specific facet of entrepreneurship and
attempt to discover what are the key drivers to foster an entrepreneurial spirit from childhood.
Definitions of entrepreneurship almost always involve the risk taking within the business world.

Universities have created an entire field of study predicated on the idea that they can teach
entrepreneurism to anyone who wants to become their own boss. Most often the question is asked
whether the entrepreneur is born with certain traits that will cause them to seek out the thrill of
starting their own company, or do life experiences reveal the path of entrepreneurialism to their
impressionable minds?
Freddie Dawson a contributor to Forbes Magazine attended a Barclays Bank debate in London
where he made several observations on the topic. In his subsequent article, he quotes Jamal
Edwards, founder of SB.TV as saying "that an entrepreneur was 5% born with innate abilities and
95% made by life experiences." Another speaker at the debate, Doug Richards, founder of School
for Start–ups and former investor on the TV show, Dragon's Den is quoted as saying "I wholly reject
the idea that entrepreneurs are born," he said. "It would be one of the most limiting ideas and it
would be a real shame if it was true." A third speaker at the debate, Greg Davies is quoted as saying
"It's pretty obvious it isn't 100% either way. You can teach someone to be better at anything," Mr.
Dawson concludes his article with the observation that "There are a number of studies that show
entrepreneurs are surprisingly different from other people, he added. This is not just a willingness to
take a gamble but also psychological characteristics including greater resilience

Community Benefit Analysis on Federal Tax-Exemption for...
Federal tax–exemption for charitable organizations has been in existence since the beginning of
federal income tax law. This exemption is based on the principle that the federal government's loss
of tax revenue is equivalent to the relief of financial burdens charitable organizations provide that
would otherwise have to be supported by public funds. Nonprofit hospitals are able to qualify for
federal tax–exemption under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code because the Internal
Revenue Service (IRS) has recognized the promotion of health for the benefit of the community,
where medical assistance is afforded to the poor or where medical research is promoted, as a
charitable purpose. (U.S. Government Accountability Office, 2008) ... Show more content on

In 1969, the IRS established broader standards for nonprofit hospital tax–exemption status based on
the extent to which these hospitals provide community benefit to the communities they serve.
(Somerville, 2012) From 1969 to the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care
Act (ACA) in 2010, there were some attempts to change this policy, however these attempts largely
failed. Prior to the implementation of the ACA, community benefit activities included providing free
and discounted care to uninsured and low–income patients, reimbursement shortfalls associated with
participation in Medicaid programs, activities to promote population health improvement, programs
to increase access to care, medical research, training for health professionals, and other contributions
that benefit the hospital's community. Under the ACA, additional requirements were established for
hospitals to be qualified as tax–exempt including conducting a community health needs assessment
at least every 3 years and develop an implementation strategy to address the needs identified by the
assessment, adopting and publicizing a written financial assistance policy, and limiting charges,
billing, and debt collection practices directed to individuals who qualify for financial assistance.

The Difference Between Service Learning, Volunteerism And...
Many people get the terms service learning, volunteerism and community service mixed together.
All three were made to make a difference somewhere or in someone's life. The main difference
between these services are the primary intentions of the programs. Service learning primary purpose
is to learn from the experience and to improve their skills. By doing so, they are helping those in
need. Volunteering and community service have the most in common, except the fact that
community service can be done without a voluntary basis. Those services are done without the
purpose of learning something from it, even though they can have a learning experience. Even
though most are volunteers doing the job, many can be paid to volunteer, mainly by their job that
persuades their employees to do so.
Houston Food Bank is a private non–profit organization. They were established in 1982 and are a
certified member of Feeding America. Their focus is to help end hunger by distributing the most
meals possible to those in need. They can provide 83,000,000 meals a year, which they are trying to
improve in. Most of the meals they pack up are sent to pantries and other organizations that need
food for individuals and families. Usually, food banks do not distribute their meals, but Houston
Food Bank does. With the help of volunteers, they can sort, pack and distribute food. Most of the
food given to them are provided from donors, local companies around the city, and USDA. The food
given to them would go to waste without their help and the volunteers who make the meals happen.
I attended the Houston Food Bank, and while I was there, I could tell they have strong teamwork
within the organization. All the employees knew what to do and how to handle that many
volunteers. They all communicated with the volunteers with a professional, friendly way. They
could get everyone who came in to sign in and get everything set up to start the day. I was not able
to tell one thing that went wrong. It was impressive how neatly and organized they had the building.
The atmosphere, at least for me, made me feel involved and wanting to come back.
Once everything was ready to start, there were groups made and taken to the designated area where

Anti-Racism In Community Organizations
An anti–racist organization, institution, system, or setting is not one in which racism is absent, rather
it is one that takes a stand against racism and involves various stakeholders in the involvement and

Furthermore, the experience of racism is not homogenous as racialization can look different from
city to city and each community has its unique needs and priorities and resources (OHRC, 2010).
Therefore, allowing community organizations to take leadership roles and have the power to adapt
and deliver the program ensures that the social integration of ethno–racial and culturally diverse

Reflection On Community-Based Human Service Organizations

  • 1. Reflection On Community-Based Human Service Organizations Community–based human services organizations are essential in addressing human service needs and often provide assistance in instances of crisis. These agencies are involved with entities such as domestic violence shelters, job training, employment programs, child care centers, foster care, child protection, prisoner reentry and day programs for seniors and the developmentally and intellectually disabled (Norris–Tirrell, 2014). These services are often play pivotal roles in promotion of the overall quality of life for the vulnerable individuals and communities that are served. Non–profit human service organizations have historically been challenged during times of economic down– turn; to find or maintain adequate funding (Mosely, Maronick, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would feel compelled to exhaust all efforts to partner with other government agencies, private businesses and the community to raise funds in an attempt to prevent closing one of my centers. I would have to look at potential ways to decrease my expenditures. This may mean that I had to avoid adding any new programs or even reduce programs that I currently offer to only the most essential and beneficial ones. I would have to determine if it would be more cost effective to consolidate jobs and reduce workforce across the board or to close a center. Laying off a couple of individual employees would not be ideal but it would affect less people than closing an office that serves entire communities. There is also the potential to allow employees whose jobs do not have to be in a dedicated office to become telecommuters. Promoting staff to telecommute would reduce the expenditures that are spent on rent, utilities, building insurance and other expenses associated with running a brick and mortar ... • 3. A Market Based Approach For Community Development Essay Community is established locally but community development is a process that includes actors from inside and outside of the community to achieve sustainability. My previous essays have addressed the progression of community development from place–based attachment, organizing and advocacy to addressing the need and effect of government involvement. The final stop on the continuum of the community development is to analyze market–based approaches to community development. This paper will look at how a market based approach to community development is an important component of community development because it is the appropriate response to the current socio– economic, and political context that our country is in. A market–based approach provides a mechanism to define relationships and allocate economic resources to create systemic change within communities. increasing opportunities for social inclusion and economic sustainability Social Sustainability 1. True community development exemplifies the relationship between the local actor and the interconnectedness that needs to exist to accomplish change. Market based approaches to community development involve those who participate in the social economy i.e. cooperatives, social enterprises etc. Locally tied, these market based approaches tap into social capital as key business practice. Broadly speaking most cooperatives would not succeed if it were not for the collective membership of the local community. Cooperatives ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Entrepreneurship Is A Good For The Organization,... Entrepreneurship is a term that has reentered the public vernacular over the last few years, many times in reference to what is wrong with America but what it means is rarely defined. Furthermore, it is generally agreed that more Entrepreneurship is a desirable trait but how to go about encouraging it is again a point of contention. This paper will address a specific facet of entrepreneurship and attempt to discover what are the key drivers to foster an entrepreneurial spirit from childhood. Definitions of entrepreneurship almost always involve the risk taking within the business world. Businessdictionary.com states "The capacity and willingness to develop, organize and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit." Why we want individuals to create new companies or even to grow products and ideas within an existing company is beyond the scope of this paper be we are going to assume that over all the outcome of this behavior is good for the organization, community, or country. There is little dispute that the United States was known for this behavior over the last two hundred years and it may be something that we are starting to lose. At least it is a behavior that we want to continue to foster. Literature Review We are surmising that exposure to a successful home business or a role model in an entrepreneurial venture will have a larger impact on predicting if a person develops into an entrepreneur than many other determinate ... At the start, I never was really interested in doing any volunteering service. I said to myself, "Hey, if I do community service my college applications would look better!" That was my mentality when I joined, but it changed when I went to my first volunteering event. I went to a park near the city of Mission Viejo, I didn't know what to expect. When I arrived, I heard that we were going to plant trees throughout the park and remove trash around the area. It made me super excited to plant the trees as I have never done or seen someone do it before. During the event, I was talking to people both new and old, and I got to connect with them ... • 11. Nonprofit Organizations: Community Analysis Volunteerism plays a critical role in addressing community, national, and global issues. Volunteerism not only enables the smooth functioning of many organizations, it also contributes to the maintenance of social cohesion. Individuals give their time and services willingly without expecting any compensation or benefits. Over the past few years, volunteerism in the U.S. has declined from an estimated 50% of U.S. adults collectively logging volunteer hours equivalent to five million fulltime jobs to a recent low of only 25% of Americans engaged in volunteer work according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014. The workforce behind many nonprofit organizations is the blood, sweat, and tears of a sizeable volunteer base. For example, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Individuals serve for a multitude of reasons, with today's volunteers serving in a variety of ways and with various expectations for their investment of energy and time. However, not all individuals who serve gravitate to the term "volunteer." For example, students may refer to internships, while educators may seek service–learning opportunities. A national study of first–year undergraduates found that: students over age 20 were more likely to volunteer than traditional–age first year students; African American, Latino, and Asian American students were more likely to volunteer than Caucasian students; and students with higher levels of academic achievement (SAT or ACT scores) were more likely to volunteer than their lower–achieving peers. (Moore, Warta, & Erichsen, 2014). Men tend to describe their service by the function, a coach while women have historically been more connected to the term volunteer. Some religiously motivated volunteers feel called to serve, while others say they are compelled to live out their faith. Data from 534 volunteers of an international aid and development agency in the United Kingdom revealed a positive relationship between prosocial values and time spent volunteering (Shantz, Saksida, & Alfes, 2014). The results also show that volunteer engagement fully mediated the relationship between the value motive and time spent volunteering, and the strength of the mediated effect varied as a function of volunteers' ... • 13. Effective Management Practices in Community Service... Community service organizations are essential for the strength and liveliness of our communities. Not only do they enrich the quality of life of several citizens, but they also exemplify the highest societal values that should be extended to all citizens. In the current ever–changing environment caused by shrinking resources, increased competition for funding and skilled staff, and demands for accountability, organizations are being forced to look at new and creative ways to influence the work environment so that they can effectively deliver services Trautmann, Maher, & Motley, 2007). In doing so, it is imperative that they utilize sound management practices in order to ensure ongoing success and a continued provision of services. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To help ensure that they work together to achieve the organization's mission, the board of directors and executive director should develop a collaborative partnership in which each understands the distinctions between board governance and executive management, as well as the various roles and responsibilities of each: Failure to do so can result in the manipulation of the board of directors on the part of the executive director, as well as the micromanagement of the executive director on the part of the board (Brody, 2005). Organizational Planning Mission and vision. The goals of an organization are often made apparent through their mission statements and vision statements, which are linked to the values of the organization and its vision for the future (Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, 2005; Villinger, 2009). Covey (1991) states that the purpose of the mission statement "attempts to encompass...the core values of the organization; it creates a context that gives meaning, direction, and coherence to everything else (p. 295). In order that they may be functional, mission statements should be short so that they can be memorized, and yet complete enough that they will direct the goals of the organization and cover all aspects of the organization's responsibilities ... • 15. Community Intervention Case Study Although each person is an individual, we all share common characteristics that are similar. Formation of a community occurs when people with similar beliefs, ideas, or traditions congregate together in a specific location (American Heritage Dictionary, 2011). Members of the community use collaboration, or working together, to provide resources to everyone in the group. For me, collaboration of the members of the community was the most important concept. As community nurses, our goal is to assess the health needs of those around us and seek ways to improve their health (Nies & McEwen, 2011, p.91). Working together with other individuals or organizations, such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland, is an effective method of increasing the success of a community intervention. By assessing the needs of the community first and then focusing on developing and implementing the intervention for a specific target group, the members can collaborate on the best approaches. Speaking with the director of the BGCC helped our group focus on the potential health needs of the children at their facility and enabled us to create a specific ... During the first few discussions, the goal changed several times. I have taken this quote seriously in the way that I have lived my life thus far. My whole life has been service driven. When I was younger I would participate in small activities with my Girl Scout troop such as caroling at nursing homes during Christmas time, making cards for soldiers overseas or collecting canned goods. As I have grown up, so has my contribution to the organizations I work with. I was selected to hold one of twelve positions to be a part of the planning team for the Montreat Youth Conference. • 21. A Community Service At The Corporation For National And... According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, the state of Nebraska spends 61.3 million hours a year doing community service. It also take 20 hours to learn and know something very well, according to Forbes (Schawbel). With those two facts in mind, Nebraskan's could have potentially learned 306,500 new things a year volunteering. When you 're introduced to something new, you will gain a lot experience or knowledge in that new area. Therefore, when we are spending that much time with our community, we will learn a lot about the people living in our community and test what we thought we already knew based on stereotypes. While giving yourself to your community during community service, one may find themselves further grasping, becoming a part of, and deviating norms throughout their involvement. I have taken part in a community service for many years that has taught me many things and given me insight into the community that I live in. I have a unique background in community service. I am involved in an organization called Rebuilding Together. Through this organization I am on a team with my family members and family friends. Harvesters Community Food Network Reaping the Harvest "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in." –Matthew 25:35 Community service, as I have come to learn, is all about taking the initiative to help someone in need, no matter their situation. As the verse Matthew 25:35 says above, it is our job to share God's love through serving those who are hurting right in front of us. These people are strangers, we may not know them, but that does not mean they should not be helped. Over the course of my life I have had the opportunity to participate in a multitude of service projects, but the one I am most passionate about is the Harvesters Community Food Network. Harvesters Community Food Network is an organization that "provides food and related household products to more than 620 not–for–profit agencies" around the Kansas City metropolitan area ("Harvesters"). • 31. Defining Roles And Responsibilities Of The Community... Defining Member Roles and Responsibilities The community organization project our research team chose was LRADAC. The process of researching background information about the organization went well. Each team member contributed to finding background information about LRADAC. Our project manager, Allison Atkins, met with our research team at the beginning of the semester. We all chose Courtney to be the liaison between Ms. Atkins and the group. Ms.Atkins stated, she had high expectations for the group and she was willing to meet with us during the project. Initially there were not distinct roles for each group member. Everyone's role became more defined when it was time to write the group papers. We all met as a group to choose the part of the paper we wanted to write. However, if a person was not in class when the parts were chosen they were assigned the remaining parts. The responsibilities of each research team member was not explicitly stated. Transportation Alternatives is a community based organization that fights for safe streets for pedestrians and cyclists. They promote bicycling, walking, and use of public transportation in NYC with the help of activist committees. Additionally, Harm Reduction Coalition is a national advocacy and capacity building organization that works to support people who use drugs through policy work. Minneapolis/St. Paul Minnesota has the nation 's largest Somali population–an estimated 57,000 people. Both Minneapolis and St. Paul have seen the largest influx of Somali immigrants. My Community Service Going to many different private schools during my elementary and middle school years, I had the opportunity to do many special things in my community most students did not have access to. Though all of the schools were very different, they all had the common value of service before self and gave their students numerous ways to help the school and community. From visiting nursing homes, to playing with the band at school fundraisers, to being paired up as mentors with younger students, I always had my hands busy providing someone in need. One of the biggest parts of my community service was visits to those in assisted living. Those visits taught me an immense amount about the importance of reaching out, especially to those who have been isolated from the outside world. Just the act of visiting and singing Christmas carols, or simply talking to them brought so much joy to the entire facility and improved the residents' days. Though I may not have had the most polished singing voice, the happiness our miniature concerts brought far surpassed the embarrassment I felt scratching out the notes. On one occasion, our little group managed to get an entire facility participating in an exciting rendition of "She'll be Comin' 'Round the Mountain," staff and residents alike were overjoyed to be participating in the music and thrill of it all. One visit, not long before Christmas, our school enjoyed a special activity day and had the opportunity to play games with residence. "Don't ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. How Human Services Affect Communities And Organizations Abstract In this paper, we will be discussing how human services affect communities and organizations. This will include personal and political empowerment and how human service professionals are involved in the different social systems. We will also discuss how the social system responds to things such as sexual abuse and delinquency. We will learn about the roles and responsibilities human service workers have in the macro environment as well as understanding functionalism and theory to poverty. All of these things will give us a better understanding of how the human service professionals affect daily life. When it comes to communities and organizations, human services professionals play a huge role. The more help a community has to offer the better the people are. Human services professionals are those who are in charge of helping with basic needs of clients. This could include but is not limited to food, housing, emergency assistance, healthcare, nursing home issues, etc. Communities, who show interest and keep up with the demands and needs of their residents, succeed far greater than those who don't. Making sure residents are informed of services offered and where they can find the help they need, can relieve a lot of stressful situations. The need for community organizing addressing community crises is, therefore, evident and perpetual. Bill Lee (2011) suggests that a pragmatic approach to community organizing intensifies community actions addressing community crises associated with the problem of inequality, environmental degradation and crises, and economic instabilities. This paper intends to explore the influences and effects of "Pragmatic of Community organization" on innovation and vice versa. Bill Lee identifies community as "a complex notion of the way people live and connect with each other" (Lee, B., 2011, p.20), and defines "community organization as a social intervention which seeks to maximize the ability of oppressed or disadvantaged people to take action and influence their environment: ....."(Lee B., 2011, p.100). Lee also suggests that a pragmatic community organizing should have specific objectives that include community participation, sense of community, social production (Gamble, N. D. & Weil, M., 2009, p.123), proper use of appropriate resources, and social learning in order to achieve community goal focusing upon citizen empowerment (Lee, B., 2011, p. 94). The scope of these organizations' activities and personnel creates exponentially more work for law enforcement than relatively isolated or contained criminal acts by individuals or small groups. Random and personal crimes committed by individuals can usually be handled by police at the local level, as the investigation is limited to the known crime (or crimes) that have been committed and reported. In these cases, identifying and apprehending the perpetrator is possible through investigation of the evidence of the specific instance of crime. These groups and teams may have vastly different functions, such as production, transportation, distribution and marketing of illegal goods and services, as well as the eventual laundering of the ill–gotten proceeds from the illegal activity (Jiminez). Network analysis helps analysts determine the activities being conducted by the criminal enterprise and who all is involved and in what capacity. In the end, criminal network analysis integrates information from multiple crime incidents and even multiple sources to discover regular patterns about the structure, organization, operation, and information flow in criminal networks (Xu and Chen). This general intelligence on the groups will aid investigative efforts and facilitate collection of evidence for use in court. Several software programs (like i2's Analyst's Notebook) have been developed to automate and streamline criminal network analysis. Although these programs automate much of the analysis (especially of large amount of raw data) there are still some basic techniques that occur "behind the scenes" in the software, that could still be done manually by the analyst. And it isn't enough to believe in peace, one must work at it. –Eleanor Roosevelt Over the course of history, society, economy, and political affiliations have all exhibited devastating impacts sought on by violence in conflict. As seen in the media, violence in all forms, whether it be direct violence or structural violence, have had reoccurring themes of halted or negative development and have been linked to psychological trauma in those who have personally witnessed or been a victim of violent acts. Although conflict is inevitable in a world with a variety of different cultural beliefs, political systems and resource availability, there are a variety of ways in which conflicts can be resolved without resorting to the use of violence. Within many fragile contexts, or "state structures that lack political will or capacity to provide the basic functions needed for poverty reduction, development and to safeguard the security and human rights of their population," (OECD DAC, 2007), communities have maintained impressive resiliency qualities. Through the development of community–based peace building organizations, communities that exist within fragile contexts would have the tools to maintain resiliency and sustainability during violent conflicts. Social Isolation And Its Impact On Social Capital Social Isolation and Its Impact on Social Capital The "surprising" finding of Rankin and Quane does to an extent show the limits of previous research, such as Putnam, on social isolation, because it does not take into consideration economic and race. Although, Rankin and Quane findings show high levels of engagement among people in poorer neighborhoods the findings are not significant enough to change the notion that social capital is eroding and therefore it is increasing social isolation amongst Americans. In this essay I'm going to talk about how Rankin and Quane findings actually correlate with Putnam's and other author point of view on the erosion of social capital. Some of the examples we will be looking into is the effect Mothers have on social capital, the loss of trust amongst Americans, Lack of Network communication, Effects that trust, reciprocation, and obligation have on social isolation and social capital. Social isolation plays a big role in social capital, economic status and race. Social isolation refers to "the lack of contact or of sustained interaction with individuals and institutions that represent mainstream society ' ' (Wilson qtd Rankin & Quane 4). You study suicide rates for a variety of other causes across the globe, but it's everywhere. El Paso County has one of the highest rates of youth suicide so yeah I mean I would feel like I was actually providing true public and community service by just doing as much as I possibly could to support families in order to prevent that and to just bring some awareness to that. Half of it is just awareness and the ability to have the conversation around it Andrew: I think that that's huge Nicole and I think that's something that should really be talked about and needs to be talked about. I also think as we're looking over not just messaging, but also fundraising networks, we've certainly seen an increase in youth homelessness in Manitou and neighboring Colorado Springs and I think as you stated there's been an increase youth suicide and just coming from my experience as a gay man I think there's some connections there. There would be a lot of people in the LGBTQ community interested in helping people who are = committed to those sort of issues with first being that LGBTQ youth make up about forty percent of the homeless population and thus are more prone to teen suicide so I mean looking for different demographic and groups whether it be looking at the LGBTQ community or the Latino community or whatnot I think you know it is not just good for outreach and messaging to those communities, but also potentially fundraising bases as well. Nicole: Absolutely. I'm so glad you brought that up because Urban Peak is an organization we have down here. This exemption is based on the principle that the federal government's loss of tax revenue is equivalent to the relief of financial burdens charitable organizations provide that would otherwise have to be supported by public funds. Nonprofit hospitals are able to qualify for federal tax–exemption under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code because the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has recognized the promotion of health for the benefit of the community, where medical assistance is afforded to the poor or where medical research is promoted, as a charitable purpose. • 73. The Difference Between Service Learning, Volunteerism And... Many people get the terms service learning, volunteerism and community service mixed together. All three were made to make a difference somewhere or in someone's life. The main difference between these services are the primary intentions of the programs. Service learning primary purpose is to learn from the experience and to improve their skills. By doing so, they are helping those in need. Volunteering and community service have the most in common, except the fact that community service can be done without a voluntary basis. Those services are done without the purpose of learning something from it, even though they can have a learning experience. Even though most are volunteers doing the job, many can be paid to volunteer, mainly by their job that persuades their employees to do so. Houston Food Bank is a private non–profit organization. They were established in 1982 and are a certified member of Feeding America. Their focus is to help end hunger by distributing the most meals possible to those in need. They can provide 83,000,000 meals a year, which they are trying to improve in. Most of the meals they pack up are sent to pantries and other organizations that need food for individuals and families. Usually, food banks do not distribute their meals, but Houston Food Bank does. With the help of volunteers, they can sort, pack and distribute food. Most of the food given to them are provided from donors, local companies around the city, and USDA. The food given to them would go to waste without their help and the volunteers who make the meals happen. I attended the Houston Food Bank, and while I was there, I could tell they have strong teamwork within the organization. All the employees knew what to do and how to handle that many volunteers. They all communicated with the volunteers with a professional, friendly way. They could get everyone who came in to sign in and get everything set up to start the day. I was not able to tell one thing that went wrong. It was impressive how neatly and organized they had the building. The atmosphere, at least for me, made me feel involved and wanting to come back.
