General Mcauliffe's Defeat In The Battle Of Bastogne
In the midst of Battle of the Bulge, the Germans needed to establish one last major offensive attack
in order to seize the Belgian town of Bastogne and to push the Allied front line west of France.
However, the United States and Allied Forces were already making efforts in retaining key
intersections of Bastogne that provided the only means of mounted maneuver through the dense and
mountainous Ardennes Forest. In an attempt to prevent casualties of war, General Heinrich Freiherr,
commander of the German forces, sent an ultimatum to the American commander of the 101st
Airborne Division, Brigadier General Anthony C. McAuliffe. The written demand ordered to
surrender in two hours or U.S. troops would face total annihilation from six battalions of armor and
artillery. The U.S. general replied with one word that became the most memorable replies in history,
"NUTS!" The general's reply was interpreted to mean, "to go to hell." On December 20th of 1944,

Containerization and the Effects on The Cities and Ports of San Francisco and Oakland
The effects of containerization are arguably as far reaching as they are underappreciated. When
considering technologies that changed the world, it is easy to quickly think of the internet and
computers easing the speed of communication across the world. Although not as glamorous, the
advent of the steel container is at the core of today's global economy, responsible for accelerating
the transfer of goods from place to place cheaply, efficiently and effectively. Containers are the
physical means of exploiting cheap labor around the world and the cornerstone invention of the
modern worldwide supply chain. The extent to which the "container matters to the ... Show more

San Francisco primarily relied on the backbreaking manual labor of longshoremen to load and
unload ships that came through the port, a profession that had existed unchanged for hundreds of
years. Officials' beliefs that containers were a passing fad, in combination with the lack of
investment and acreage required for the new technology, allowed the Port of San Francisco, and its
longshoremen, to fade into history, just as its neighbor, the Port of Oakland emerged as a
sophisticated leading container port. The migration of the maritime industry across the bay
dramatically altered and restructured the economies of both San Francisco and Oakland. Similarly,
their waterfronts were forever transformed.
After World War II, the US economy boomed, while the maritime industry did not. The merchant
fleet had been commandeered aby the government when the United States entered the war, and did
not return to private ownership until two years after it ended, in 1947. Coastline shipping stagnated
at prewar levels, while trucking grabbed the market share of domestic transportation. A cargo ship
typically would spend as much time in port being loaded and unloaded as in transit, and was
therefore unreasonably expensive. Despite this, there was relatively little competition for larger
American ship lines since foreign lines were barred from coastal and island service. However
inefficient and costly,

Basic Mode of Transport
INTRODUCTION
Each business has its own particular transport needs. These depend on the nature of the business and
the type of products or services it buys and sells.
This guide will help you decide on the most appropriate transportation for your business needs and
assess the tax implications and costs to your business.
It also tells you what licenses, insurance and training you or your staff will need to operate business
vehicles.
ROLE OF TRANSPORT:
Transportation is the physical thread connecting the firms geographical dispersed area. It helps in
transfer of materials from suppliers to the firm and finished goods to be transferred from the firm to
the market. It serves as link that facilities of the firm.it also suprts the products of ... Show more

The large number of carriers is due in part to the low capital that entering the trucking business
requires. High variable cost and low fixed cost characterized the cost structure. The motor carrier
does not require extensive terminal and equipment investment and does not invest in its own
highway, and the carrier pays for highway use through fees such as use of taxes licencing charges.
These variable expenses contribute to the high variety cost structure.
Motors carriers are classified in manner as truckload and less than truck load. Less than truck load
carrier accept small packages of shipment where truckload carrier accepts shipment of full truckload
size.
ADVANTAGES OF ROADWAYS
1.road transportation offers advantages of speed, door–to–door flexibility and widespread
geographic coverage.
2. the major advantage of motor transport over the modes is its inherent ability to provide service to
any location.
3. the large number of motor carriers suggest a high availability. For example, many more motor
carriers than railroad facilities are available in an area.
4. motor carriers do not need to consolidate wagons together or decouple wagons at various
locations on the route as it in railway transport it speeds up the transportation.
5. motor carriers used in road transportation have lower fixed capital costs as compared to other
modes of transportation.
6. due to the lower entry costs of capital, this mode of transportation is characterized by

The Causes And Consequences Of The Logistics Revolution In...
An organization's strategy is the overall plan for an entire business that sets out how the organization
will use its major resources. In other words, an organization's strategy is a plan of action aimed at
reaching specific goals and remaining in good attitude with clients and vendors. On the other hands,
an establishment's structure is the way the pieces of the organization fit together internally.
Strategy focuses on the ways to be dynamic with an organised plan to achieve a goal or benefit
within a firm/corporation.
Structure is a series of organisational techniques to relate/arrange between parts or elements of
something more complex.
℗4. Logistics revolution in a business context
Logistic revolution has evolved businesses improving the efficiency of strategy and structure,
leading to a profitability increase with firms inducing an optimisation belief with selected specialist
skills. Bonacich and Wilson
The logistics revolution and its consequences are the central points of focus to their book. They
define the logistics revolution as "a quiet change" to how "consumer goods are being produced and
delivered" (p. 3). It has a "sizeable impact on society and the way it is organized" (p. 3). The
revolution is how the "entire cycle of production and distribution is now viewed as a single
integrated unit that requires its own specialists for analysis and implementation" (p. 3). Following
arguments advanced Marxist geographers, such as David Harvey, authors maintain the

Essay about Why The Stalemate on the Western Front Was Broken
Why The Stalemate on the Western Front Was Broken The Following Were Equally Important
Reasons Why The Stalemate On The Western Front Was Broken: New technologies like the tank
The American entry into the war The blockading of German ports The German Offensive of March
1918 New technologies developed during the war were a major help in breaking the stalemate. One
of the most useful developed was the tank. A formidable ally in the 1st world war. The tank first
appeared in September 1916, but the first designs of the tank were actually useless, they blew up to

Another huge development was that of planes. They were usually used for recognisance but because
of their noise and need to fly at a low level, they were always spotted and the enemy moved position
before the plane could relay the information back to it's base camp. There moment of glory was once
again at the counter attack to the spring offensive, where they were used to shoot at soldiers moving
across open ground. A German advance in technology was the U–boats. They were used to try and
starve Britain into surrender. There were developed to blockade British ports and destroy cargo and
transport ships. Their main role in breaking the stalemate was the fact that they were one of the main
reasons that the Americans joined the war. The Germans nearly succeeded in starving Britain, but
they blew a boat called the Lusitania in May 1915. 124 Americans were aboard the ship, all were
killed. The Germans stopped the attack on the boats for a while after this, but started once again in
1917 in another attempt to starve Britain. They sunk 9 U.S ships. Initially the U.S was happy to stay
out of the war and sell weapons to both sides. The U–boat attacks made them less eager to stay
away. The final straw for them was the fact that ion the 1st of march, Britain released a document
that was intercepted, travelling between the German foreign minister Zimmerman and the German

The Iraqi Dry Canal Profile
1.2 Iraqi Dry Canal Profile
Iraqi leaders have a larger vision called "The Dry Canal project" to transport goods between the
North and South of the world quickly, safely and inexpensively. Road and rail schemes should be
planned to run this project in Iraq could change the ordinary shape on the regional trade. In short:
Shipments (Cargo) coming across the Gulf will be loaded in trains and trucks from the Iraqi Grand
port of Al–Faw Southern of the country, and then will travel across the country to Turkey and then
to Europe. This would give shippers companies an alternative to traditional but no longer route

Iraq stands at 0.18 km sq.km "currently, it 's impossible to know exactly how many kilometers of
roads that will be built under the new planned master plan, Amer A.Saeed, President of the project
management (Ministry of construction and housing) says; "It depends on the output of the study we
will finance the project accordingly". Estimating the scope of the rehabilitation of the road also
depends on the results of the study. What is clear is that the initial efforts would focus on improving
the situation of the existing roads network. Authorities will consider that the expansion of services
for the new roads is the first step in the project, including highways and bypass roads, finally,
linking new urban centers in the country and reducing congestion in large cities [2].
In 2020, it could be a challenge in the case of the Suez Canal, the busiest trade connection with

I. Introduction To Maglev Technology And Application
1.1 Principle of Maglev System
Maglev is a system in which the vehicle runs levitated from the guideway (corresponding to the rail
tracks of conventional railways) by using electromagnetic forces between superconducting magnets
on board the vehicle and coils on the ground. The following is a general explanation of the principle
of Maglev.
fig. 1.1
1.1.1 Magnetic Levitation
The "8" figured levitation coils are installed on the sidewalls of the guideway. When the on–board
superconducting magnets pass at a high speed about several centimeters below the center of these
coils, an electric current is induced within the coils, which then act as ... Show more content on

"It happens almost like magic," one scientist said. Q. Does low–speed Maglev have advantages over
light rail or a rubber–tire "people mover" system? A. Supporters cite lower capital costs, lower
operating costs, tight turning capabilities, virtually no noise pollution, smooth rides because
levitated vehicles create no friction, less intrusion on land and an opportunity to showcase the city
and establish it as world leader of transit technology.

Critics of the Pittsburgh project are questioning the use of public money, the philosophy of
building the largest parking garage in Pittsburgh near Downtown rather than on the outskirts,
competing with the Port Authority for funds and riders and whether any short transit system to the
Civic Arena serves a worthwhile purpose. Q. What happens if I'm aboard the Civic Arena Maglev
shuttle and it breaks down? A. If there's a real emergency, riders could open car doors manually to
reach a combination emergency/maintenance walkway between the parallel Maglev "tracks." The
Maglev plan proposes using a customized tow vehicle in case a car dies because of lost power or a
mechanical problem. It could go out on the track to push or tow a crippled car. Meanwhile, Maglev
would maintain service on the opposite track. Maglev cars are to contain recessed emergency
wheels, so if the cars lose their levitation, they can still ride on the guideway. Plans for the Civic
Arena showcase project call for building a

How can Ricci protect her product design? 4. What are the pros and cons of the mail ordering
market strategy? What are the pros and cons of alternative distribution methods? The biggest benefit
that the mail–order marketing strategy will yield to Ricci is that she gets to choose when and where
the Beach Carrier is offered for sale. With this feature she can choose who distributes her product as
well. The next big pro for the mail–order strategy is that she will receive immediate feedback on the
effectiveness of the system. If after the first wave goes out there is a lag in sales, she may need to
think of a new method to market/sell her product. A major disadvantage to the mail–order system is
that oftentimes a small picture in a catalog is not an effective representation of the product itself and
could turn people off to potentially purchasing the Beach Carrier. Another con to this system is that
Ricci may not be reaching enough of the target consumers through her system. Her target
demographic, women, would not necessarily be reached by a Boating magazine. Also, advertising
through a magazine is a very ineffective way to reach a large market because it is very unlikely that
many potential customers are subscribed to that

Essay about A Tale of Two Cities
During my active duty military service I had the opportunity to live in and visit many different
cities. Of all the cities I lived in, I spent most of my military time in Charleston, S.C. and
Jacksonville, FL. Charleston and Jacksonville were similar in size, geography and population types,
but differed greatly in history, weather, and the overall attitudes of its residents. If I had to choose
between the two cities as the place to call my home, it would be without a doubt, Charleston, S.C.
Charleston and Jacksonville were both considered large port cities, each with a portion of their
populations consisting of military families. Although Jacksonville was larger in area than
Charleston, folks who lived in the Charleston area considered ... Show more content on

known more as a modern city that began to grow and blossom after the Civil War. It was considered
a "victim of war" due to the dilapidation it suffered during the Civil War. The climates of Charleston
and Jacksonville were generally considered to be similar, hot and very muggy. My experience was
that there was still a large difference and I had come to feel as though each city's climate resembled
the attitudes of its residents, or maybe it was just the opposite. Residents of Charleston were laid
back and unrushed while the residents of Jacksonville were impatient and hurried. I remember the
deep blue skies over Charleston harbor were often filled with white puffs of clouds that resembled
perfectly shaped cotton balls. I could always count on the light and pleasant ocean breeze that made
it difficult to focus on my work, and if rain came, it drifted in as slowly and silently as the sailboats
returning to the marina after a long day out on the harbor. In Jacksonville, I remember the ocean
breeze was more of a confused gust that chopped at your skin and

Container Moving Freight : The Technology And Imaginative...
Intermodal Containers Moving Freight
The advancement in technology and imaginative techniques, the procedures and systems of how
cargo is moved and handled is streamlined. Prior to containerization, moving freight from one
location to another across the globe was a tedious practice and often took an extended amount of
time. Manufacturers would use various configurations with dissimilar sizes and weights which led to
additional time at each location being required to handle the different sized cargo. The use of
intermodal containers has changed the shipping industry allowing for multiple modes of
transportation to rapidly cross load the containers and mover the containers to the next destination.
Implementing the use intermodal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were significant delays in cross loading cargo onto the ship, workers would have to stack like
packages, construct shipping pallets, and block and brace items in the hulls of the ships as well as
the decks. When a piece of cargo was too large or heavy it would require additional material
handling equipment to move the freight to the next transportation mode being either rail or road. At
the receiving port there was also a time delay due to the need to offload the cargo by individual
piece and separate in on the dock. Road and rail transportation were very effective, but encountered
similar delays and issues depending on the size and weight of the cargo. This resulted in a call for
change in the way freight is transported among all modes of transport. The Department of
Transportation Federal Highway Administration identified the need to implement change which is
topic in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Act of 1991 (ISTEA). Outlining what intermodal

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Dry Bulk Cargo
From grains to coal and from sugar to cocoa, dry bulk cargo cover a range of produce and raw
materials that have two features in common: they are unpacked and are homogeneous. These two
properties make it easier for dry bulk cargo to be dropped or poured into the hold of a bulk carrier.
Figure: Dry Bulk Carrier
Without the estimated 500 million DWT of dry bulk shipping transported by sea annually, life today
would be altered dramatically. Just having breakfast would be a very different event, with the
ingredients of bread and cereal coming from dry bulks, as well as coffee and the sugar to sweeten it.
Even the metal elements of your toaster and kettle come by sea and the coal to generate the
electricity supply to power both appliances is likewise shipped in. Other dry bulk cargo include iron
ore, alumina fertilisers, scrap, sulphur and cement, as well as a large number of agricultural products

Bulk and Break bulk are two terms that are being used incorrectly and interchangeably during the
course of day to day business. These terms cannot be used interchangeably because there are
distinctive differences between Bulk and Break Bulk in terms of cargo, nature, size, capacity,
handling, trade, customers, ports, terminals, equipment, infrastructure etc.
The difference between Bulk and Break Bulk
The term Bulk relates to trades where dry cargo such as Iron ore, Grain, Alumina and Phosphate are
carried in loose form (i.e. cargo is not packed) and loaded directly into the holds of the vessel, see

The Accident Investigation Of The Crash
Background
Following the in–flight disintegration of the Kanishka, most of the aircraft came to rest on the ocean
floor almost 7,000 feet below the surface. During the accident investigation that followed, the
submerged wreckage was surveyed, photographed and videotaped, and pieces were recovered off
the ocean floor. Floating wreckage was also recovered and examined. Each piece was given a
unique number called a "target". The RCMP returned to the crash site for two subsequent salvage
operations in 1989 and 1991 during which further underwater video footage was captured and
further wreckage recovered. Of the 465 targets observed on the ocean floor, 159 were positively
identified as aircraft components or as coming from particular parts ... Show more content on

The significance of this expert evidence lies primarily in their differing opinions regarding the
location of the bomb that precipitated the destruction of the Kanishka. The Crown theory, supported
by the opinion evidence of Professor Christopher Peel, is that it was located in Baggage Area 52,
which contained the M. Singh bag. The defence theory, supported by the opinion evidence of Dr.
Edward Trimble and Mr. Frank Taylor, is that it was located some five feet forward of that location
in Baggage Area 51, containing luggage checked in at Toronto. A conclusion that the defence
evidence raises a reasonable doubt with respect to the Crown's bomb location would fundamentally
undermine its theory about the role of these accused in the alleged offences. Thus, while the distance
between the two proposed bomb locations is remarkably small, its significance is great.
Qualifications of Expert

internal detonations on the structure of aircraft. Professor Peel is currently Technical Director for the

Kingdom Ministry of Defense's research establishments. During his career, he has been involved in

Why The Threats To The Great Barrier Reef
Shipping accidents, oil spills, over–fishing and tourist visits are all threats made by humans to the
Great Barrier Reef (GBR). They can all be stopped. The GBR has been slowly but surely

The Intermodal Shipping Container is a large steel box...
The Intermodal Shipping Container is a large steel box that was created to transport goods by train,
truck, or ship for around the last 50 years. The pioneer of this revolutionizing box goes is a man by
the name of Malcom McLean who began his transportation interest with his trucking company
(McLean Trucking) that he built into one of the nation's largest. From there, he developed the steel
container in 1956, which replaced the previous loading and unloading method known as the "Break
Bulk Method." The Break Bulk Method was a much less efficient method where all goods are
loaded individually using bags, boxes, drums, crates, or barrels instead of unified large containers.

Containers at half height are used to carry heavy, low volume products in order to not waste extra air
space in containers. Last but not least, the car carrier containers are made specifically to transport
different types of vehicles safely and efficiently. With many of these containers having distinct
differences, they all serve the same general purpose for transportation.
Container ships have completely redefined efficiency in terms of shipping quantity, speed, and
safety. Before the mainstream introduction of container ships in the 1950's, shipping by sea was
slow, not standardized, and very inefficient. Loading and unloading cargo required many long and
strenuous man–hours, and was generally not safe. After World War II, the concept of standardized
boxes for shipping was starting to grow, and on April 20, 1956 the SS Maxton shipped 58 truck–
trailer vans from New York to Houston. Their chassis were not connected, and the boxes were
loaded and unloaded from the ship by gantry crane–one of the most important pieces of machinery
in intermodal containerization. This is not the first example of containerization, but indeed the first
successful use of an intermodal structure. Almost immediately after, more cargo ships underwent
modifications for these shipping containers. (Board)
Businesses instantly realized the benefits, ports and ships were quickly modified for intermodal
container support. However, they were not immediately as standardized as was necessary

Importance Of Deep Sea Ports
The development of deep sea ports as an economic infrastructure plays a vital role in the
transportation and communication system from country to country. The improvement in such
economic infrastructures effects the growth of a country in a positive way. Coastal countries such as
Britain, Spain and Portugal are the finest example of development by the help of maritime powers.
Their Ports had played a significant and critical role in the development of their economies.
Deep sea port development has positive effects on employment and revenue earnings of a country.
Exports and imports occur through the sea; therefore making a positive trade and balance of
payment. The cluster of activities in sea ports all over the world clearly shows that ports have
significant economic impact both locally and regionally and nationally. The leading sector of a
country like Singapore is its deep sea port. Ports have enabled Japan to build export processing
zones that have turned Japan into exporters of goods which cannot be produced on the basis of
country's factor endowment profile. As exports create a multiplier effect on the domestic
economy, building a sea port will create an expansion in the export level. There are at least four
significant reasons for establishing a deep sea port in Sonadia, such as:
1) To provide facilities for uninterrupted coal supply for the power plants to be established in
Moheskhali.
2) To retain and support the country's expanding trade needs for the

The Link Between Supply And Demand Of Crude Oil Essay
1 Introduction Great number of shipping companies specialize in bulk commodity transportation,
and crude oil refers to major liquid bulk cargo type. Demand of downstream users and supply in
upstream sector impacts the work of shipping companies. The aim of the report is to examine the
link between supply and demand of crude oil. This report presents description of crude oil, its
downstream users, processing and utilization, regarding corresponding literature, statistical data and
maps. 2 Crude oil Crude oil is a fossil fuel that consists of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons. It is
a flammable liquid with a specific smell. Fossil fuels are formed over millions of years from
sedimentary rocks. Crude oil is formed from remains of dead sea creatures. As it takes millions of
years to form – fossil fuels are limited and non–renewable (BBC 2006). Oil accumulates between
layers of the subsurface or in porous rock among other things. There are four types of areas where
the biggest oil reserves are found – deserts (e.g. Unites Arab Emirates), arctic areas, river deltas (e.g.
Nigeria) and continental margins offshore (e.g. USA) (Anderson 2016). In terms of global
consumption, crude oil is the most important primary fuel, accounting for 36.5 % of world primary
energy consumption. Most of the global reserves of oil are located in the Middle East, the rest are
found in America and CIS countries (Rempel 2006), detailed information is shown in the Figure 1.

"To run a high frequency service between major ports on a regular schedule" (pp.222) becomes the
mantra for operating containerised sea–freight. Although many countries Government subsidise the
investment of shipbuilding, or lend funds at very low rates of interest, and extend payment terms,
ship owners need to supply themselves with containers, and chassis, to provide an integrated service
to their customers. The sudden explosion of containers, containerships, enormous slot capacity
between 1970–73 sees the coming of age of this new industry. More than ever, containers oblige
their operators to constantly monitor costs, and the minimum requirement is to cover operating costs
to keep the ships sailing.
Operating a profitable freight handling business requires "ship lines ... to build bigger ships and
faster cranes to reduce the cost of handling each container ... [to] have the best chance of survival"
(pp227). Before the end of the 1970´s, however, the reality of operating containers is that it is "a
capital intensive, cyclical transportation" (pp.230) business. The bitter pill is that "they would
always be hostage to external forces, their prices and profit margins depending mainly on economic
growth and on the competitors´ decisions to build new ships"(pp.230). "The revolutionary impact of
containerisation, the biggest advance in freight movement for generations, has largely worked itself
out" (pp.230 – The Financial Times

A Report On The Plane Detectors
The airplane was equipped with a smoke and fire detection and warning system to provide flight
crews with a visual indication in the cockpit of smoke or fire in the cargo compartments. The
airplane had a total of 26 smoke detectors. The main cargo compartment had 7 smoke detectors
installed, and in the 4 lower cargo compartments were 19 smoke detectors installed. During the
preflight checks the flight crew tested the operation of the smoke detectors by enabling their test
function from the cockpit. The flight engineer reported that no problems were encountered during
the functional check of the smoke detectors before the flight. The main cargo compartment smoke
detector system consists of detectors located in the compartment ceiling that were designed to
provide a smoke indication whenever the smoke around a detector reached a certain density. Five of
the seven smoke detectors were mounted on the left side of the ceiling at locations corresponding to
cargo containers 2, 5, 8, 11/12, and 14. The other two detectors were mounted next to each other
near the ceiling centerline at locations corresponding to cargo containers 17 and 18. The smoke
detector switch, which is located on the flight engineer's upper panel, provides a means for testing
the smoke detectors and the system wiring. The smoke detector switch has the following labeled
positions: OFF, NOR [normal], and 1 through 7. However, the system is not able to identify the

7.2 Group Assignment
Introduction:
Recently, China and Colombia trade relations are stronger than before. Colombian Java International
sells their coffee to Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai in China and the rate of export
products is increasing. Therefore, our team suggests Colombia exports their products from Tumaco
seaport to China's Hong Kong port and Shanghai port by using Maersk Group shipping company
and China COSCO company. After the products are arrived in Hong Kong and Shanghai port, we
recommend to use S.F. Express logistic company to deliver the products to Guangzhou and Beijing
city.
Colombia:
About the Tumaco seaport. This is a good seaport for our plan. Because when we transfer the cargo
from Colombia to Hong Kong. It only crosses the Pacific, and then it will arrive the Hong Kong.
Without this seaport, the vessel will cross the Panama Canal. If the company do not want cross the
Panama Canal, they will have a pretty long trip to transfer the cargo. About the shortest trip, it has
9209.56 mile (17056.10 km) and spent over one month to arrive.
And then, it contains 0–24 Ton lifts, fixed cranes, mobile cranes, floating cranes. About the services,

What Is The Synthesis Of 2D Tmds
2.3.2 Synthesis of 2D TMDs In general, there are two major classifications for making 2D materials
which includes top–down exfoliation from bulk materials and bottom–up synthesis. Both methods
would be reviewed for making 2D TMDs in this paper. Top–down methods fabrications Thin flakes
of TMDs can be peeled off from bulk materials using adhesive tape, applied to the substrates and

Ships: Ship and Vessels
SHIPS
Since the end of the age of sail a ship has been any large buoyant watercraft. Ships are generally
distinguished from boats based on size and cargo or passenger capacity. Ships are used on lakes,
seas, and rivers for a variety of activities, such as the transport of people or goods, fishing,
entertainment, public safety, and warfare. Historically, a "ship" was a vessel with sails rigged in a
specific manner.
Ships and boats have developed alongside humanity. In armed conflict and in daily life they have
become an integral part of modern commercial and military systems. Fishing boats are used by
millions of fishermen throughout the world.

This difficulty is increased by the fact that the terms such as sloop and frigate are used by old and
new ships alike, and often the modern vessels sometimes have little in common with their
predecessors.
Today
In 2007, the world's fleet included 34,882 commercial vessels with gross tonnage of more than
1,000 tons,[42] totaling 1.04 billion tons.[1] These ships carried 7.4 billion tons of cargo in 2006, a
sum that grew by 8% over the previous year.[1] In terms of tonnage, 39% of these ships are tankers,
26% arebulk carriers, 17% container ships and 15% were other types.[1]
In 2002, there were 1,240 warships operating in the world, not counting small vessels such as patrol
boats. The United States accounted for 3 million tons worth of these vessels, Russia 1.35 million
tons, the United Kingdom 504,660 tons and China 402,830 tons. The 20th century saw many naval
engagements during the two world wars, the Cold War, and the rise to power of naval forces of the
two blocs.
The size of the world's fishing fleet is more difficult to estimate. The largest of these are counted as
commercial vessels, but the smallest are legion.Fishing vessels can be found in most seaside villages
in the world. As of 2004, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimated 4 million
fishing vessels were operating worldwide.[43]

Logistics Strategy And Components Of Japan And China
Nowadays, logistics companies are becoming significantly vital in our world and it has a major role
within the economy. However, any logistics company should set logistics strategies in order to
achieve their goals and there are many logistics and supply chain strategies that companies can
make.
Therefore, this report will firstly define the logistics strategy and then explain how the car making
components comes into the United Kingdom from Far East particularly Japan and China.
Consequently, will demonstrate what modes of transport used in order to bring car making
components such as, body parts, steering and chassis parts, interior furnishing and wheels and tyres.
Then, it will determine the best transport modes which is cost effective and time efficient.
Eventually, will analyse the advantages and disadvantages of using each modes of transport and
illustrate storages and warehouses for these products.
2 Logistics strategy and components from Japan and China.
Generally, logistics strategy has three different goals such as, cost reduction, capital reduction and
service improvement. Firstly, the cost reduction is strategy which is minimising the variable costs
associated with storage and movement and the great strategy is formulated by estimating different
courses of action, such as, choosing between different warehouse locations or selecting between
different modes of transport. However, the main goal is still to achieve maximum profit. Secondly,

  • 4. General Mcauliffe's Defeat In The Battle Of Bastogne In the midst of Battle of the Bulge, the Germans needed to establish one last major offensive attack in order to seize the Belgian town of Bastogne and to push the Allied front line west of France. However, the United States and Allied Forces were already making efforts in retaining key intersections of Bastogne that provided the only means of mounted maneuver through the dense and mountainous Ardennes Forest. In an attempt to prevent casualties of war, General Heinrich Freiherr, commander of the German forces, sent an ultimatum to the American commander of the 101st Airborne Division, Brigadier General Anthony C. McAuliffe. The written demand ordered to surrender in two hours or U.S. troops would face total annihilation from six battalions of armor and artillery. The U.S. general replied with one word that became the most memorable replies in history, "NUTS!" The general's reply was interpreted to mean, "to go to hell." Containerization and the Effects on The Cities and Ports of San Francisco and Oakland The effects of containerization are arguably as far reaching as they are underappreciated. When considering technologies that changed the world, it is easy to quickly think of the internet and computers easing the speed of communication across the world. Although not as glamorous, the advent of the steel container is at the core of today's global economy, responsible for accelerating the transfer of goods from place to place cheaply, efficiently and effectively. Containers are the physical means of exploiting cheap labor around the world and the cornerstone invention of the modern worldwide supply chain. The extent to which the "container matters to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... San Francisco primarily relied on the backbreaking manual labor of longshoremen to load and unload ships that came through the port, a profession that had existed unchanged for hundreds of years. Officials' beliefs that containers were a passing fad, in combination with the lack of investment and acreage required for the new technology, allowed the Port of San Francisco, and its longshoremen, to fade into history, just as its neighbor, the Port of Oakland emerged as a sophisticated leading container port. The migration of the maritime industry across the bay dramatically altered and restructured the economies of both San Francisco and Oakland. Similarly, their waterfronts were forever transformed. After World War II, the US economy boomed, while the maritime industry did not. The merchant fleet had been commandeered aby the government when the United States entered the war, and did not return to private ownership until two years after it ended, in 1947. Coastline shipping stagnated at prewar levels, while trucking grabbed the market share of domestic transportation. A cargo ship typically would spend as much time in port being loaded and unloaded as in transit, and was therefore unreasonably expensive. Despite this, there was relatively little competition for larger American ship lines since foreign lines were barred from coastal and island service. However inefficient and costly, ... An organization's strategy is the overall plan for an entire business that sets out how the organization will use its major resources. In other words, an organization's strategy is a plan of action aimed at reaching specific goals and remaining in good attitude with clients and vendors. On the other hands, an establishment's structure is the way the pieces of the organization fit together internally. Strategy focuses on the ways to be dynamic with an organised plan to achieve a goal or benefit within a firm/corporation. Structure is a series of organisational techniques to relate/arrange between parts or elements of something more complex. ℗4. The revolution is how the "entire cycle of production and distribution is now viewed as a single integrated unit that requires its own specialists for analysis and implementation" (p. 3). They were usually used for recognisance but because of their noise and need to fly at a low level, they were always spotted and the enemy moved position before the plane could relay the information back to it's base camp. There moment of glory was once again at the counter attack to the spring offensive, where they were used to shoot at soldiers moving across open ground. A German advance in technology was the U–boats. They were used to try and starve Britain into surrender. There were developed to blockade British ports and destroy cargo and transport ships. Their main role in breaking the stalemate was the fact that they were one of the main reasons that the Americans joined the war. The Germans nearly succeeded in starving Britain, but they blew a boat called the Lusitania in May 1915. 124 Americans were aboard the ship, all were killed. The Germans stopped the attack on the boats for a while after this, but started once again in 1917 in another attempt to starve Britain. They sunk 9 U.S ships. Initially the U.S was happy to stay out of the war and sell weapons to both sides. The U–boat attacks made them less eager to stay away. The final straw for them was the fact that ion the 1st of march, Britain released a document that was intercepted, travelling between the German foreign minister Zimmerman and the German Embassy in ... Introduction To Maglev Technology And Application 1.1 Principle of Maglev System Maglev is a system in which the vehicle runs levitated from the guideway (corresponding to the rail tracks of conventional railways) by using electromagnetic forces between superconducting magnets on board the vehicle and coils on the ground. The following is a general explanation of the principle of Maglev. fig. 1.1 1.1.1 Magnetic Levitation The "8" figured levitation coils are installed on the sidewalls of the guideway. When the on–board superconducting magnets pass at a high speed about several centimeters below the center of these coils, an electric current is induced within the coils, which then act as ... Supporters cite lower capital costs, lower operating costs, tight turning capabilities, virtually no noise pollution, smooth rides because levitated vehicles create no friction, less intrusion on land and an opportunity to showcase the city and establish it as world leader of transit technology. 3 Critics of the Pittsburgh project are questioning the use of public money, the philosophy of building the largest parking garage in Pittsburgh near Downtown rather than on the outskirts, competing with the Port Authority for funds and riders and whether any short transit system to the Civic Arena serves a worthwhile purpose. Q. What happens if I'm aboard the Civic Arena Maglev shuttle and it breaks down? A. If there's a real emergency, riders could open car doors manually to reach a combination emergency/maintenance walkway between the parallel Maglev "tracks." The Maglev plan proposes using a customized tow vehicle in case a car dies because of lost power or a mechanical problem. It could go out on the track to push or tow a crippled car. Meanwhile, Maglev would maintain service on the opposite track. Maglev cars are to contain recessed emergency

What are the pros and cons of alternative distribution methods? The biggest benefit that the mail–order marketing strategy will yield to Ricci is that she gets to choose when and where the Beach Carrier is offered for sale. With this feature she can choose who distributes her product as well. The next big pro for the mail–order strategy is that she will receive immediate feedback on the effectiveness of the system. If after the first wave goes out there is a lag in sales, she may need to think of a new method to market/sell her product. A major disadvantage to the mail–order system is that oftentimes a small picture in a catalog is not an effective representation of the product itself and could turn people off to potentially purchasing the Beach Carrier. Another con to this system is that Ricci may not be reaching enough of the target consumers through her system. Her target demographic, women, would not necessarily be reached by a Boating magazine. Of all the cities I lived in, I spent most of my military time in Charleston, S.C. and Jacksonville, FL. The climates of Charleston and Jacksonville were generally considered to be similar, hot and very muggy. My experience was that there was still a large difference and I had come to feel as though each city's climate resembled the attitudes of its residents, or maybe it was just the opposite. Residents of Charleston were laid back and unrushed while the residents of Jacksonville were impatient and hurried. I remember the deep blue skies over Charleston harbor were often filled with white puffs of clouds that resembled perfectly shaped cotton balls. I could always count on the light and pleasant ocean breeze that made it difficult to focus on my work, and if rain came, it drifted in as slowly and silently as the sailboats returning to the marina after a long day out on the harbor. Intermodal Containers Moving Freight The advancement in technology and imaginative techniques, the procedures and systems of how cargo is moved and handled is streamlined. Prior to containerization, moving freight from one location to another across the globe was a tedious practice and often took an extended amount of time. Manufacturers would use various configurations with dissimilar sizes and weights which led to additional time at each location being required to handle the different sized cargo. The use of intermodal containers has changed the shipping industry allowing for multiple modes of transportation to rapidly cross load the containers and mover the containers to the next destination. Implementing the use intermodal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were significant delays in cross loading cargo onto the ship, workers would have to stack like packages, construct shipping pallets, and block and brace items in the hulls of the ships as well as the decks. When a piece of cargo was too large or heavy it would require additional material handling equipment to move the freight to the next transportation mode being either rail or road. At the receiving port there was also a time delay due to the need to offload the cargo by individual piece and separate in on the dock. Road and rail transportation were very effective, but encountered similar delays and issues depending on the size and weight of the cargo. This resulted in a call for change in the way freight is transported among all modes of transport. The Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration identified the need to implement change which is topic in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Act of 1991 (ISTEA). The pioneer of this revolutionizing box goes is a man by the name of Malcom McLean who began his transportation interest with his trucking company (McLean Trucking) that he built into one of the nation's largest. From there, he developed the steel container in 1956, which replaced the previous loading and unloading method known as the "Break Bulk Method." Last but not least, the car carrier containers are made specifically to transport different types of vehicles safely and efficiently. With many of these containers having distinct differences, they all serve the same general purpose for transportation. Container ships have completely redefined efficiency in terms of shipping quantity, speed, and safety. Before the mainstream introduction of container ships in the 1950's, shipping by sea was slow, not standardized, and very inefficient. Loading and unloading cargo required many long and strenuous man–hours, and was generally not safe. After World War II, the concept of standardized boxes for shipping was starting to grow, and on April 20, 1956 the SS Maxton shipped 58 truck– trailer vans from New York to Houston. Their chassis were not connected, and the boxes were loaded and unloaded from the ship by gantry crane–one of the most important pieces of machinery in intermodal containerization. The Link Between Supply And Demand Of Crude Oil Essay 1 Introduction Great number of shipping companies specialize in bulk commodity transportation, and crude oil refers to major liquid bulk cargo type. Demand of downstream users and supply in upstream sector impacts the work of shipping companies. The aim of the report is to examine the link between supply and demand of crude oil. This report presents description of crude oil, its downstream users, processing and utilization, regarding corresponding literature, statistical data and maps. 2 Crude oil Crude oil is a fossil fuel that consists of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons. It is a flammable liquid with a specific smell. Fossil fuels are formed over millions of years from sedimentary rocks. Crude oil is formed from remains of dead sea creatures. As it takes millions of years to form – fossil fuels are limited and non–renewable (BBC 2006). Oil accumulates between layers of the subsurface or in porous rock among other things. There are four types of areas where the biggest oil reserves are found – deserts (e.g. Unites Arab Emirates), arctic areas, river deltas (e.g. Nigeria) and continental margins offshore (e.g. USA) (Anderson 2016). In terms of global consumption, crude oil is the most important primary fuel, accounting for 36.5 % of world primary energy consumption. The underwater images of many of the unrecovered targets were converted into computer aided design ("CAD") images, which in turn were used to simulate certain important targets from the aft fuselage of the aircraft. Under the supervision of the RCMP, these simulated targets were assembled with the actual recovered wreckage in a partial reconstruction of the Kanishka at a warehouse in the Lower Mainland as an aid to understanding the technical expert evidence regarding the destruction of the aircraft. Experts presented portions of their evidence at this warehouse during the trial and referred extensively to the reconstruction in demonstrating their respective theories. The significance of this expert evidence lies primarily in their differing opinions regarding the location of the bomb that precipitated the destruction of the Kanishka. The Crown theory, supported by the opinion evidence of Professor Christopher Peel, is that it was located in Baggage Area 52, which contained the M. Singh bag. The defence theory, supported by the opinion evidence of Dr. Edward Trimble and Mr. Frank Taylor, is that it was located some five feet forward of that location in Baggage Area 51, containing luggage checked in at Toronto. A conclusion that the defence evidence raises a reasonable doubt with respect to the Crown's bomb location would fundamentally undermine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Princeton 2006 Marc Levinson brings together in his book "The Box", How The Shipping Container Made The World Smaller And the World Economy Bigger, a history in unitised freight handling in its birthplace, and shares with us an education in obsession, innovation, and invention. He describes through his main character, Malcom McLean, how to do business by integrating shipper, transporter, and customer in controlled logistics/ in a smooth supply chain. Further, the reader is given a lesson in investor relations whether they be public or private sector. Despite regulated land transport, and unregulated freight handling on the docks, the result is the same: inertia in the evolution of both road and rail, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "To run a high frequency service between major ports on a regular schedule" (pp.222) becomes the mantra for operating containerised sea–freight. Although many countries Government subsidise the investment of shipbuilding, or lend funds at very low rates of interest, and extend payment terms, ship owners need to supply themselves with containers, and chassis, to provide an integrated service to their customers. The sudden explosion of containers, containerships, enormous slot capacity between 1970–73 sees the coming of age of this new industry. More than ever, containers oblige their operators to constantly monitor costs, and the minimum requirement is to cover operating costs to keep the ships sailing. Operating a profitable freight handling business requires "ship lines ... to build bigger ships and faster cranes to reduce the cost of handling each container ... [to] have the best chance of survival" (pp227). Before the end of the 1970´s, however, the reality of operating containers is that it is "a capital intensive, cyclical transportation" (pp.230) business. The bitter pill is that "they would always be hostage to external forces, their prices and profit margins depending mainly on economic growth and on the competitors´ decisions to build new ships"(pp.230). "The revolutionary impact of containerisation, the biggest advance in freight movement for generations, has largely worked itself out" (pp.230 – The Financial Times ... A Report On The Plane Detectors The airplane was equipped with a smoke and fire detection and warning system to provide flight crews with a visual indication in the cockpit of smoke or fire in the cargo compartments. The airplane had a total of 26 smoke detectors. The main cargo compartment had 7 smoke detectors installed, and in the 4 lower cargo compartments were 19 smoke detectors installed. During the preflight checks the flight crew tested the operation of the smoke detectors by enabling their test function from the cockpit. The flight engineer reported that no problems were encountered during the functional check of the smoke detectors before the flight. The main cargo compartment smoke detector system consists of detectors located in the compartment ceiling that were designed to provide a smoke indication whenever the smoke around a detector reached a certain density. Five of the seven smoke detectors were mounted on the left side of the ceiling at locations corresponding to cargo containers 2, 5, 8, 11/12, and 14. The other two detectors were mounted next to each other near the ceiling centerline at locations corresponding to cargo containers 17 and 18. The smoke detector switch, which is located on the flight engineer's upper panel, provides a means for testing the smoke detectors and the system wiring. The smoke detector switch has the following labeled positions: OFF, NOR [normal], and 1 through 7. However, the system is not able to identify the specific sensor(s) detecting smoke in ... BSCL420–T103 Nancy, Sylvia, Flora and Tony 7.2 Group Assignment Introduction: Recently, China and Colombia trade relations are stronger than before. Colombian Java International sells their coffee to Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai in China and the rate of export products is increasing. Therefore, our team suggests Colombia exports their products from Tumaco seaport to China's Hong Kong port and Shanghai port by using Maersk Group shipping company and China COSCO company. After the products are arrived in Hong Kong and Shanghai port, we recommend to use S.F. Express logistic company to deliver the products to Guangzhou and Beijing city. Colombia: About the Tumaco seaport. This is a good seaport for our plan. Because when we transfer the cargo from Colombia to Hong Kong. It only crosses the Pacific, and then it will arrive the Hong Kong. Without this seaport, the vessel will cross the Panama Canal. If the company do not want cross the Panama Canal, they will have a pretty long trip to transfer the cargo. About the shortest trip, it has 9209.56 mile (17056.10 km) and spent over one month to arrive. And then, it contains 0–24 Ton lifts, fixed cranes, mobile cranes, floating cranes. About the services, Long shore and Electrical, but not Electrical repair, Steam and Navigation equipment (SeaRates, 2016). What Is The Synthesis Of 2D Tmds 2.3.2 Synthesis of 2D TMDs In general, there are two major classifications for making 2D materials which includes top–down exfoliation from bulk materials and bottom–up synthesis. Both methods would be reviewed for making 2D TMDs in this paper. Top–down methods fabrications Thin flakes of TMDs can be peeled off from bulk materials using adhesive tape, applied to the substrates and then identified by light interference using similar techniques used to develop graphene. Fig 6c shows a thin monolayer flake peeled off from the bulk material (Fig 6a) mechanically with the tape. Oxide nanosheets as well as other materials can be obtained using this method. Some other reported methods for making TMDs include using molybdic acid or tungstic acid with thiourea or selenourea, reasonably quality TMD is obtained with this method with thickness of a few hundred nanometers. Figure 7. (a–c) Different shapes of MoS2 grown by CVD methods based on MoO3 precursors and Sulphur [9] 2.3.2 Applications of 2D TMDs The major advantage of TMDs over graphene for electronic applications is the presence of a bandgap which is needed for a high in/off ratio as well as absence of dangling bonds, flexibility and high carrier mobility. The earliest application of TMDs for FETs dates back to 2004 and this showed mobility comparable to conventional silicon based FETs (500cm2v–1s–1 at room temperature). Ships are generally distinguished from boats based on size and cargo or passenger capacity. Ships are used on lakes, seas, and rivers for a variety of activities, such as the transport of people or goods, fishing, entertainment, public safety, and warfare. Historically, a "ship" was a vessel with sails rigged in a specific manner. Ships and boats have developed alongside humanity.
