Storm Of Solitude
Storm of Solitude As I stood on the screened–in back porch at 4:00 AM watching the unstoppable force creep closer to destroying what little vestiges
of the life we once had, all I could ask myself was how I missed the signs. Everyone knew this was coming except Amber and me, but no one
bothered to tell us. Couldn't they see the hidden pain in our faces when we moved into the neighborhood six months before? We were strangers in
a new world desperate for someone to have pity on us and lend a helping hand once in a while. It is like the people took one glance our way and
decided we weren't worthy of their help. They felt we needed a little "testing of our faith" so to speak. My mind raced for a solution. The memories
we had were... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was truly overwhelming, but since we were just married, we tentatively braced ourselves for the challenges that were to come. After all, young
couples are supposed to be adventurous, right? It wasn't long before the optimism quickly faded away as we were swallowed whole by the city and
slowly digested. The fumes of low tide and cigarette butts filled our lungs. The sound of bustling tourists and competing trumpeters blasted our ears.
But the worst part about it was not the bombardment that numbed our senses, it was the isolation from everything we had come to know and love. We
brought little things with us like pictures and trinkets. I had my signed golf ball from the '72 Masters and Amber had the sweat–stained rag that her
father used for nearly two decades at GE before health inspectors demanded he get a new one. More importantly, we had each other, but we still
missed the life we had in Atlanta. In all honesty, I probably shouldn't have resented New Orleans as much as I did. It wasn't the city's fault that we
were isolated from everyone else so my disdain was slightly unfounded. In any case, when my sister Elise and her husband Hamp came to visit us
Easter weekend six months after moving in, we were more than happy to see them. Once I

All Quiet On The Western Front
All Quiet on the Western Front: The Innocence of Youth In All Quiet on the Western Front, the main character is a nineteen year
–old, who tells his
perspective of the war. Throughout the story, he talks about his recent class–mates and how they enlist in the war with him, and how he and his friends
experience the war. In the story, it talks about the innocence that is taken away from the soldiers like Paul and his friends. The story is set in Germany
during the First World War. Numerous events took place during this bloody war including the deaths of millions and the youth taken away from the
young men that enlisted in the war. In this war, Paul, along with his friends, experience these things during the war: their innocence that was taken...

"Kantorek had been our schoolmaster, a stern little man in a grey tail–coat, with a fact like a shrew mouse." (10) Paul's old schoolmaster was a
depiction of his recent youth and is one of the last real "youth–ism" that he will possess throughout the rest of his life. The quote is important to point
out because the author (or in this case Paul) wants to address his teacher from his youth, and what's left of it. Now because of the war, his youth is
gone. "We had no definite plans for our futures. Our thoughts of a career and occupation were as yet too unpractical a character to furnish any
scheme of life." (21) At this point, Paul is so confident that his youth is taken away from him he begins to think about his future in the war. Since
Paul and his friends lost their youth during the war, even their futures' were taken away from them in a way, not knowing how to maintain life after
the war or even if they get out of the war. Over all, Paul in the story talked about his youth being taken away from him and how his generation will be
stripped from their youth. Every soldier's youth was taken from them, whether or not they even survived the war; the soldier's also experienced the
un–awareness of the consent in the war.
The young men that enlisted in the war were not blamed for the war, but yet they have no say in the war so they are fighting by orders and not
themselves. "A man with a small pointed

Pat Conroy Lord Of Discipline Analysis
In The Lords of Discipline, Pat Conroy accurately shows how the misuse of power and idealistic beliefs of acceptance can be catastrophic and even
deadly. "My entrance to this marsh–haunted city is always filled with troubled meditations on both my education and my solitude during a four– year
residence at the Institute. The city of Charleston, in the green feathery modesty of its palms, in the certitude of its style, in the economy and stringency
of its lines, and the serenity of its mansions South of Broad Street, is a feast for the human eyes. But to me, Charleston is a dark city, a melancholy
city, whose severe covenants and secrets are a powerful and beguiling as its elegance, whose demons dance their alley dances and compose their
malign hymns to the side of the moon I cannot see. I studied those demons closely once, and they helped Kill off the boy in me", (Conroy, 1). The

brutalization, derogation, and the sadistic demoralization of the weak cadet's rights, self esteem and honor. In Will's senior year he was chosen to be
one of the student officers that supervise the new cadets or "plebs". Knowing what he went through his first year, he was very reluctant because he

Annotatory Tract Infection Paper
Every year a familiar scene plays out in clinic waiting rooms, chairs filled with miserable patients waiting to see their physician with complaints of a
never ending cough and a constant nasal drip. More than likely, these patients will receive a prescription for antibiotics, but should they? Most acute
respiratory tract infections (ARTIs), do not require an antibiotic, the symptoms will resolve themselves over time without antibiotic treatment.
Healthcare experts and scientists have warned the public about the dangers of overusing antibiotics, and there are thousands of studies to support that
fact, but no one is listening. Patients are convinced they need to have antibiotic treatment, and somehow their time is wasted if they leave empty ...

The authors of the study are confident that their quality improvement approach can be successfully replicated in other family practice clinics. The
methods used by the project could be easily implemented, the materials from the CDC's Get Smart about Antibiotics are inexpensive and readily

acknowledges that both physicians and patients were fully aware they were participating in a quality improvement project. The project would have
been more efficient if the participants were unaware they were being evaluated. When individuals believe they are not being observed the results tend
to be more trustworthy. Ultimately, the project proved its hypothesis and educated individuals about the risks of overusing antibiotics. Eventually,

Speckle Trout Analysis Essay
"Speckle Trout Analysis" "Speckle Trout" was written by Ron Rash in 2005. Ron Rash was born in Chester, South Carolina in 1953; however, he
grew up in Boiling Springs, South Carolina. This is a small town in South Carolina and was the inspiration for most of Ron's stories. "Speckle Trout"
is written about a sixteen year old boy that lives in a small town similar to the one that Ron Rash grew up in. The young boy thinks that he is
invulnerable to everything, and he does not listen to anyone that warns him of his actions. The boy learns the hard way that he is not invulnerable and

Lanny. Lanny had to go to where everyone else stayed away from to catch these speckle trout. He even walked right past a No Trespassing sign and
continued up the creek. Then Lanny came upon some pot plants on the bank, and he knew how much money they were worth. Lanny cut five plants
down and took them to Leonard, the local drug dealer, and sold the plants for sixty dollars. Lanny knew this was easy money, so he quickly went
back the next day for more. After selling the second batch of pot plants, Leonard warned Lanny that it was time to harvest and that the owners would
be checking the plants soon. However, Lanny did not listen to Leonard and returned for more pot plants. He quickly learned this was a mistake when
he stepped in a bear trap and found himself lying on the bank bleeding severely. Next, Lanny

How Our Gender is Imposed on Us Essay
How Our Gender is Imposed on Us
What makes us who we are? Is it the clothes we wear or the toys we played with while we were children? Maybe? Or maybe it's the people and the
environment we grew up around? Most people would say that all these characterists would be true, and I'd agree. But if you really think hard about
what makes you, YOU, then you'd realize that there is so much more than what meets the eye. Let's take a look into my life to see what made me the
"masculine" person I am today. I can remember back to when I was about five or six years old. Outside playing in the dirt in the front lawn of our house.

This, in my belief relates back to the male instinct. How men long time ago would go hunt and gather their food out in the woods or where ever they

I used to get into a lot of trouble while I was young. I got hit with a belt quit a bit. One time I did something and lied about it to my father, and he
asked me a question; he said, "well you can either stand in the corner or you can take it like a man and get the belt." So I decided to take the belt. I'm
not really sure why, I guess I thought that it would've looked better on my part. It was a way of showing that I could take it like a man and hold
everything back. I've always hidden my emotions. I think I was always somehow encouraged not to show any emotions. It's like my parents were
subtlety telling me to not show any emotions, because that's what guys do they show no emotion.
While I was in elementary school, I can picture all the events the boys would do at recess. Most of us would get together and make up teams to play

find the girls huddled around the benches, sitting on the swings, or going down the slide. It's like there was this international divide. All the boys did

Argumentative Essay On Social Media
What is social media? If one was to ask an everyday teenager of this generation, they would probably say something to the effect of "It's a digital
platform that helps everyone stay connected no matter what they're doing." However, if one was to ask someone from the prior generation what social
media is, they might say "It leads to the youth of America becoming more: anti–social, depressed, self–conscious, and more than likely destroys the
chances of someone making a career for themselves later in life." So which answer is correct? Well, surprisingly enough the prior generation is.
Social media leaves a digital footprint that can't be erased no matter what precautions are taken. In today's society, the digital footprint that someone
leaves is seen as an ongoing resume for their future, whether they like it or not. It's seen too many times, whether it's in the movies or it happens to
a friend, when someone goes for an opportunity such as a job interview, one of the biggest things employers take into account is what they post on
their social media pages. It was reported that in 2015, one in ten job hunters are rejected due to what they post on social media. Whether it be
complaints, inappropriate photos, etc., it was posted on the World Wide Web for everyone to observe. Additionally, everything that is/was posted on
the internet is there for forever, and nothing can be done about that. The type of digital footprint that today's society is leaving is viewed as most

Operation Barbarossa Essays
OPERATION BARBAROSSA
The invasion of Russia was the largest military campaign of the Second World War. Operation Barbarossa, as it was known, was launched on 22 June
1941 and completely took Russia by surprise.
The widening war raging in Africa and eastern Europe were key distractions for Hitler from his ultimate goal of attacking Russia.
Although the British army remained undefeated in the west, Hitler's goal proved an urgency for him to begin moving on the east. Whilst planning was
made throughout 1940 for the invasion of Russia, time was favorable towards the Russians and they continued to mobilize their resources and
strengthen their defense forces.
The invasion of the Germans was a complete surprise as Russian dictator, Josef ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The German army once again succeeded here, with the Ukraine being captured along with 600 000 Russian prisoners. With this success, the push for
Leningrad and Moscow began once again, however the situation began to change with autumn rains slowing advances and winter creeping up.
It was during the Russian winter that German troops entered Leningrad and began a 3–year siege, however the city never fell. At the same time, one
army group reached the outskirts of Moscow but by December night temperatures fell to below 50 degrees, German soldiers lacked adequate clothing,
fuel froze in the tanks, weapons jammed and the armies were struggling for supplies. It was then that the Russian army, reinforced with troops from the
Eastern front, launched a major counter attack and drove the Germans back 150 kilometers back before they stabilized their line.
In the course of the invasion, the Russians had lost over 5 million soldiers and Germany over 1 million, but the German campaign still failed.
Though there is not one single causing factor, the Germans had underestimated the Russians who had men to spare and were encouraged by Stalin's
message of Nationalism where he called on to defend Mother Russia against the invaders. Germany's military strategy was also flawed as there were
too many goals at once and not one principal target

Third Battle Of Ypres Essay
The Third Battle of Ypres The First World War was a long and bloody conflict, the world's first taste of mechanized warfare. The Third Battle of Ypres
fought from July–November 1917 was a long costly battle, a perfect example of huge loss for little gain. This investigation will explore the causes
and consequences of this battle, give an insight into what happened during the battle and how it was and still is significant to New Zealanders.
Overall this battle was a long battle of attrition that did not help the Allies come closer to the decisive victory that they wanted. There are many causes
of the Third Battle of Ypres but they can be broken down into three main ones. The first reason was to break through to the German U–boat bases on
the Belgium coast. This was to stop the unsustainable losses they were inflicting on the British Navy. The second reason was to try and take pressure

It took place in the Second phase of the battle. The main objective of this attack was to capture the Gheluvelt Plateau. This would bring the Allies
closer to the final objective of Passchendaele village. The attack was launched at 5:40 am on the 20th of September and good progress was made.
There was some trouble with snipers and machine guns early on in the advance but progress continued at a steady rate. As a result of this progress
the Allies had achieved their final objective of the capture of the Wilhelm Line by around noon of that day. The result of this successful attack was
that all of the high ground around the Menin Road which had been fought over for months, had all been captured by the Allies. In the attack and
repeated counter attacks by the Germans heavy losses were sustained by both sides. The final figure was 25,000 German casualties compared to

The Battle Of Stalingrad : Turning Point Of The Second...
The Battle of Stalingrad is considered the turning point of the Second World War as the German forces failed to overcome the defense of the
Russian army leading to their humiliating defeat at the hands of the Russians. It is commonly believed that this loss was due to Hitler's lack of trust
in his own generals and his selfish desire to conquer an essentially useless piece of land. American writer Edwin Palmer Hoyt believes that if Hitler
had granted his generals more flexibility, then Von Paulus could have saved some of his divisions from complete annihilation. Another perspective of
the outcome is that it stemmed from Stalin's decision to allow for how own generals and commanders to take control over the battle while he put his
focus on other things which would lead to the Soviet domination over the German army in a seemingly hopeless situation. In the first stages of the
Russian counter attack against the German army, led by General Friedrich Paulus, the German plan for strategic retreat was stopped by Hitler himself
who, in a radio message to Paulus, would say that surrender is not an option and to continue fighting until the German's were unable to continue. This
evidently selfish and stubborn behavior from the leader of Nazi Germany forced the German army to brave the Russian winter and later force their
surrender in 1943 by restricting the power of his generals on the front lines. The loss of manpower from this defeat would start the downfall of the
power of Nazi

Otto Dix's Corpse In Barbed Wire
Through the cultural frame, artworks are concerned with understanding how an artwork is influenced by the values of the society it is produced in,
and, in turn, how the artwork influences the values of the society. This includes examining the historical and cultural context in which the work was
made, and religious and/or philosophical beliefs, which may have influenced the work. Plate 1, 'Corpse in Barbed Wire' 1924 is a German
Expressionist etching by Otto Dix, reflecting war and. His works document the reality of the through the subject matter and positioning. He uses

Like many of Dix's generation in Germany during the 1920s, he drew from the German expressionist movement in his use of distortion, directness,
media and subject matter in plate 1. German expressionism involved directness, frankness and a desire to startle the viewer. Their works embraced
printmaking and focused on the emotions expressed rather than reality. Dix heightens the emotions effects through his meticulous rendered, horrific
images. The brilliant white bones stand out against the darker background. He experimentation with printmaking and used multiple acid baths to eat
away at the image, to mimic decaying flesh. This horrifying focal point does startle the viewer through its direct disposition. Expressionists often felt
the need to confront the devastating experiences of WWI, as plate 1 documents through it's shocking yet realistic representation of the war and its
effect. The common expressionist technique of distortion is utilised to exaggerate the skull and expose it as disgusting and confronting. Otto Dix's

All Quiet on the Western Front
All Quiet on the Western Front is an enthralling story about WWI, which, unlike other war stories at the time, vocalized the negative aspects of the
war specifically the psychological effect. You can see throughout the book, the psychological horrors which Paul experiences. This psychological
aspect of stories is generally not as conspicuous or as horrifying as shown in All Quiet on the Western Front. I have always been intrigued by the
psychological affect that war has on you, and this book was able to provide an accurate representation of why war effects the solders in such a horrid
way. The part that was most compelling was when Paul was stuck in the hole. He had a sudden revelation that the French soldier was a "person" too. He

Kantorek and other commoners do not see the horrors of war until they are actually in it. People such as him spit the word "coward" if people do
not enlist. For example, Joseph Behm who originally didn't want to enlist but eventually caved into enlisting because he didn't want to be
ostracized. Paul said the poorest and the simple people were the wisest whereas the people that are better of, who should have known what they
were doing, were enlisting. Like many other war books at the time, people going into war were shown as a glorious and amazing thing. If the
people such as Kantorek wrote this book, he would have glorified going to war without knowing what war was actually like. The author's viewpoint
was similar to Paul viewpoint on this matter because both experienced war firsthand. Unlike the others who didn't fight in the war, these two have
experienced war and know what it is like to fight. For the soldiers it is not glorious, it horrendous to see comrades fall by your side, in a painful,
grotesque way. Paul talks about how the enemy has pamphlets that talk about how the Germans eat Belgian children. This is the type of propaganda

The Center Of Philadelphi The Tower Of Terror
If you have ever been to Philly, you have probably passed it at one time–an old abandoned building, which at one time was the center of Philadelphia
attention. I have travelled through Philadelphia many times and have passed this impressive Victorian style building. Despite its abandoned and
rundown appearance, I have always said that this building had so much beauty and potential. The outside of the building has intricate arching and
architecture, and has eye–catching brick and stone detailing. Driving down Broad Street, going from North Philly towards the center of downtown, my
eyes always drifted to the left to stare at this building–a structure somewhat resembling the "Tower of Terror" from Disney World. After passing this
building various times, my mind began to question if this building was at one time a well–kept and prosperous place. As I passed this building once
more, I took note of the rickety sign that sits on top of the building that reads "Divine Lorraine Hotel". I began research on the hotel and had never
envisioned the history which stands behind that old desolate building. At one time, the Divine Lorraine Hotel was the place to live in Philadelphia.
Broad Street was a populated and flourishing area in the city. So what is the history behind this building and what ever happened to the Divine Lorraine
Hotel? The hotel of striking architecture, through years of history, fell to shambles after being one of the most successful hotels in Philadelphia.

Compare And Contrast Soldier's Heart And Red Badge Of Courage
The novels, Soldier's Heart and Red Badge of Courage are amazingly similar to one another. Henry the main character in Red Badge of Courage,
pretended to be an injured soldier, meanwhile Charlie, the main character in Soldier's Heart did not fake an injury while the war was going on, he
stayed and fought without faking injury or running away in the battle. Comparing was very easy for the two books but contrasting the two books
was very difficult because, the two books are so similar. There was an irony in both of the books, they both lost the innocent boys they both was

incredibly similar to another in the passages.
The books, Soldier's Heart and Red Badge of Courage, are different in many ways. Henry was a young boy of the age of 17 from the state of

Factors That Influence Rainfall in the United States
Factors that Influence Rainfall in the United States
A type of precipitation is rainfall and it develops when water vapor condenses into droplets in the atmosphere thus becoming too heavy to stay
suspended in the air so gravity causes them to fall. The pattern or occurrence of rainfall in the United States or basically anywhere in the world depends
on several factors such as ground elevation, wind directions, location within a continental mass, areas of low pressure, cool fronts, jet streams and even
mountain ranges. For instance mountains have an influence on wind and wind is an important feature in rainfall, "The windward sides of mountainous
islands in the trade wind regime are among the rainiest places on earth, where rains exceed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the pressure is 'high' it means that the air's pressure is higher than the pressure of the surrounding air in the area. A 'low' is where it is lower.
This means that where the air is slowly descending the pressure is high and vice versa. So, as air descends, it warms, which inhibits the formation
of clouds. This means that the air that descends in high pressure area has to get to high altitudes in some way which is why air actually rises in low
pressure areas. Winds tend to blow into low pressure areas because are moves from higher pressure areas into lower pressure areas. When the wind
moves into a low area the air moves up and eventually cools and rainfall comes about. Also the low pressure that causes the air to rise has to do with
the Criolis Effect, which is the force caused by the Earth's spin that redirects moving air to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the
Southern Hemisphere. According to meteorologist Tony Pann, who works with Coriolis Effect stated, "With the Coriolis effect, air circulates in
patterns that depend on latitude. At the mid–latitudes of the USA, most weather systems move from west to east. However, systems tend to move
from east to west near the poles and in the tropic" (Pann). The upslope flow is also related low pressure areas which is basically the result of air rising
and cooling while being forced to ascend to higher terrain.

Components 2 : Ethics And Culture Essay
Component 2: Ethics & Culture: International trade has boomed over the past three decades. Since 1990, the number of multinational corporations in
the world has grown from 30,000 to more than 63,000 (Kotler, P. & Armstrong, G. p.552). According to different experts becoming a global company
is a big feat, but it is important to improve the overall growth potential of a company. To convert a successfully business from domestic to
international, a company will need to consider a set of factors that might not affect a local company. For example, factors as ethics & culture. These
factors must be considered carefully by Jamb Juice. One of Jamba Juice's strategies is to continue to expand through franchise opportunities and
continue to create new markets. One of these new markets can be Uruguay. Uruguay is located in the middle east of South America, between Argentina
to its west and Brazil to its northeast. Three–quarters of the country have low–lying landscape which is grassland, ideal for cattle and sheep raising.
Also, this territory is suitable for agriculture, and forestry. These activities are the most important source of exports or the country. This activities are
possible because Uruguay has a privileged climate. Its climate is warm and humid, in summer (December to February) the temperatures ranging

The transportation system doesn't help all the time and sometimes makes commuting even more difficult. Septa is every commuter nightmare

Battle Of Ypres Analysis
The interview of Lester Stevens can be used for historical analysis, regarding the battle of Ypres. Lester Stevens describes the battle of Ypres in
great detail, speaking of what took place before, during, and the aftermath of the horrific battle. This interview is especially useful since interviews
from the Canadian Corps from World War 1 is extremely rare. Minutes before the attack, Lester describes he "saw the Germans hop over their
trenches and put these cans in front of their trenches". Chaos later followed as the Canadian Corps had attempted to stop the spread of what they
thought was smoke, using Ross Rifles, which were useless. His time at the hospital is revisited and it provides another aspect to the whole battle, which

Trench Warfare In World War 1
During world war one, there had been many strategies that have been used during the war, one of them being Trench warfare. Trench warfare has been
an important strategy that soldiers used to protect themselves and their comrades.
Trench warfare is best defined when two sides fight from ditch to ditch and protect themselves from enemy fire. This tactic was used mostly in the
western front in france during world war one. The trench warfare system is a complicated system of trenches that had many interlinking lines of
trenches. The trenches consisted of many things including a communication trench, a machine gun nest, an underground bunker, a traverse, a wire
break, a listening post, and a trench block.
In trench warfare both sides fight from trenches facing each other. The soldiers can drop down when the other side starts shooting the bullets then hit
the dirt and the soldiers would remain unharmed.Trench warfare takes place in world war one it was one of the most famous strategy used in world

Different Forms For Swimming : The Importance Of Swimming
Swimming is a sport that can be swum individually or as a team. It's typically swum in filtered swimming pools, but sometimes competitions can take
place in open bodies of water. The overall objective is to swim faster than your competition. The race can be swum in different forms; the butterfly
stroke, backstroke, breaststroke, front crawl, freestyle, an individual medley, and a relay race. Swimming each stroke requires specific techniques, and
in competition, there are specific regulations concerning the acceptable form for the different strokes.
A front crawl calls for you to kick hard with your feet, while bringing your arms over your head and into the water one at a time. While the backstroke
has many similarities to the front crawl, you float on your back, rather than propel your front through the water first. The butterfly stroke calls for you to
bring both arms over your head at the same time and push them into the water to propel yourself. The butterfly stroke uses a dolphin–style kick, which
means that your legs will stay straight and together as you kick them through the water. The breaststroke usually means a frog–style kick, where you
will bend your knees and then kick your legs out beneath the water. Your arm stroke will begin with a sweep out from your chest and then a sweep in
back to your chest. Finally, although not used in competition, the sidestroke holds importance for swimmers because you can use it to rescue someone,
since it only requires one arm.

The Great Depression France
The Start to the French Depression: Another country that suffered just as much as the United Kingdom had was France. Causes of their downward
spiral were due to an underdeveloped economy. France's industry was far inferior to Great Britain's, particularly in farming. Tourism was also a big
part of France's economy, and during this time, many individuals simply did not have the money to travel around the world. France, like the United
Kingdom, also suffered to recover from World War I. While not as bad, France relied heavily on German reparations, to pay for reconstruction. Once
reparations had ceased, the Depression in France took place. Starting in 1931, France did not recover from the Depression until the remainder of the

Canada's Involvement in World War One
The events of July and early August 1914 are known as the sparks that lit the explosion of World War I. Uneasy tensions that had been boiling
beneath the surface of Europe for many years soon erupted and with that several alliances that were formed over the past decades were invoked, so
within weeks the major powers were at war; via their colonies, the conflict advanced rapidly. When war officially broke out in 1914, Britain joined in
the defense of Belgium and in reaction to Germany's violation of the treaty in which the countries neutrality was to be respected by all other nations.
Upon this Britain requested that all dominions of the British Empire, including Canada were to fight on its behalf. ... Show more content on

The battle of Somme took place during the 1st of July and the 18th of November 1916 in the region Somme department of France, on both banks
of the river of Somme. It was during the time of the First World War that Newfoundland was still under the power of the British Empire. Britain
declared war on Germany in August of 1914. This was the beginning of Newfoundland's first regiment. There was a great response from
Newfoundland with many proud Newfoundlanders ready to serve in the war. There was such a huge demand that from a population of 240,000 that
more than 12,000 people joined up for the regiment. When war had been declared an enormous amounts of soldiers were being killed and the rapid
progression of military warfare such as tanks, grenades and mines were being introduced promptly in large numbers. In order to end this war, generals
came up with the conclusion of making what they called the "Big Push" which was the joining of the British and French troops against enemy
Germany. These troops would start the assault at the Somme. This would be the Battle of Somme near Beaumont Hamel that the first Newfoundland
Regiment would partake in. On the morning of July 1st thousands of British and French troops marched towards No Man's Land, within half an hour of
walking to their destination, the troops were dramatically decreasing in soldiers

equilibrium and control of the upper body (figure 5: A). The left knee is flexed in preparation for a forceful extension during the force–producing

The Importance Of The Somme On The Home Front
In 1916, the battle of the Somme began, intending to end the war for the allies. It pitted an unexperienced British army, against a professional German
one. It was also, however significant in many ways. Two of the main areas where the battle of the Somme was significant were in its military value, and
the reactions it caused, on the home front. The battle of the Somme, intended to end the war that year, had ambitious objectives, it was significant for
failing to achieve almost all of these. One of these was Beaumont Hamel, a fortified village behind the German lines. The Battle plan called for the
village to be taken on the first day. The fact that the village was not taken until the very end of the battle on the 13th of November, illustrates how
much the plan failed. Demonstrating the level to which the plan failed Private Anthony Stacey reports that this was a death trap for our boys as the
enemy just set the sights of their machine guns on the gaps in the barbed wire and fired . Another objective, Serre, was not taken at all. In fact, the
British staff were so unaware of modern weapons, that they had cavalry ready to attack after the infantry broke through. This is significant as it shows
how inexperienced the British army was when it came to trench warfare. Had the staff understood the trench tactics better, they would not have ... Show

Essay about Battle of the Somme
The Battle of the Somme epitomizes the harsh realities of trench warfare for the Allies and represents the negligent battle planning and technological
advancements that are associated with the stalemate of World War One. Trench warfare was common across the Western Front, with similar strategies
being employed by both opposing sides. Sir Douglas Haig, one of the British coordinators for the Somme offensive is blamed with an offensive strategy
destined for failure. The British offensive, an utter failure, resulted in a stalemate, which was common throughout World War One. The British
development of the tank, while it eventually ended the horrendous stalemate, was ineffectively used during the Somme.

The British went into the Somme with a mixed attack plan, which led to an unsuccessful first assault resulting in a battle of attrition. The opening day
of The Battle of the Somme resulted in near 60,000 casualties for the British, the largest in British military history for a single day. Originally the
Somme was supposed to be a French dominated offensive, however the Germans attacked to the South in Verdun occupying the majority of French
troops. The British were then thrust into control of the offensive, leaving Sir Douglas Haig and General Rawlinson to arrange an offensive strike
against the Germans. Haig advocated for the use of infantry including foot soldiers as well as cavalry to lead the offensive. Rawlinson countered with
a bite and hold strategy, which involved fortifying a strong defense and warding off German counter attacks. Rather than committing to one strategy,
the two were combined in order to create a week–long bombardment followed by an offensive attack on foot.
The offensive was planned on a strict time table, as Haig did not trust those who were considered volunteer soldiers. This quote demonstrates Haig's
disdain towards those who did not have significant military training, ""He tended to disdain and to suspect the motives of people who could not
properly govern themselves." (Johnson). As a result of his dislike towards the volunteer army he designed the offensive so

Analysis Of Proposition Of Rational Expectations,...
CHAPTER ELEVEN
STUDY WITH INVARIANCE PROPOSITION OF RATIONAL EXPECTATIONS
11.1 Introduction The concept of Invariance Proposition of Rational Expectations, developed by Lucas, Sargent and Wallace in early seventies, presents
the idea that the anticipated part of money supply affects price level. Since the present work is devoted to study the relationship between money supply
and price level, the Invariance Proposition theory of rational expectation can be applied to examine the relationship between anticipated money supply
and price level. In order to apply Invariance Proposition theory in examining the impact of anticipated money supply on price level, we need to estimate
the anticipated money supply.
There are several procedures to estimate the anticipated money supply; the present study has applied ARIMA structures of narrow and broad money
supply for the estimation of anticipated money supply. After identifying anticipated money supply, a regression equation has been performed taking
price level as dependent variable and anticipated money supply as explanatory variable.
11.2 ARIMA Model for M1 Money Supply
In order to quantify anticipated money supply, the ARIMA model has been applied. For this purpose equation (11.1) has been employed for ARIMA
structure for M1 money supply, on the basis of which the anticipated M1 money supplies has been quantified. гЂ–dLnMгЂ—_1t=О±+ОІ_1

Remarque 's The Trenches On The Front Lines From The...
The realism, grisly detail, and irony Remarque injects his story of WWII in the trenches on the front lines from the German perspective somehow
remains poetic because of his lyrical writing style. Nineteenth century society was not ready for Remarque's new language of war. Until this novel
society held the illusion of war as both glorious and romantic. The idea of such a thing traces back to the ancient Spartans carrying forth to 19th
century Europe (Traver 2002). Before Chapter One, Remarque introduces the idea of the ensuing pages are the work of a new language about war.
"This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face
with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped its shells, were destroyed by the war" (Remarque
Preface).
The Significance of the Epigraph
As the epigraph to the novel introduces Remarque's intention of writing the novel he dispenses with the familiar elements of excitement and romance
thus favoring a stark and entirely unsentimental read. His language of war becomes an advocate for soldiers who meet death face to face finding war
is not an adventure. It is this message about death that Remarque succeeds in his poetic fashion expressing his ideas engaging the reader into the crux
of his message about the evil of and written in his own language. Others wrote of the same war and soon the war to end all

German Military Strategist In 1914
German military strategist were ready when the declarations of war began flying all over Europe. They intended to lock off the Russians in the east,
smoothly kick France out of the war through a plan known as the Schliefffen Plan, then throw their full force, collaborating with Austria–Hungary,
against the Russians. The Schliefffen Plan, named after General Alfred von Schlieffen who created it during 1905, called for invading the small
countries like Luxembourg and Belgium in order to bypass to the north the strong fortifications along the French border. After a rapid conquest of the
small countries, the German advance would continue into northern France, spin around Paris to the west and take the French capital. It almost worked,
but German commander in chief General Helmuth von Moltke decided to send his troops east of Paris to engage and defeat the weakened French
army straightly. In doing so he displayed his rightwing to counterattack by the French and a British Expeditionary Force, resulting in the First Battle of
the Marne, September 6–10, 1914. Despite casualties in the hundreds of thousands, the battle was a stalemate, but it stopped the German drive on Paris.
Both sides began digging a network of trenches.

In this essay I will explain what Schlieffen plan was and why it did not work step by step.It began when Germany declare war on Russia and France.
However their allies Britain and Belgium stepped in to help while Austro–Hungary was alliance to Germany. The Schlieffen plan had been created by
Alfred Von Schlieffen but he had died before world war one started. The plan was meant to be foolproof. First of all, Germany planned to defeat
France quickly by marching through Belgium before Russia could get involved. It was intended to avoid a war on two fronts. Germany believed that
Russia would take six weeks to mobilize their troops. Germany would hold the French on the frontier with their weak forces and follow this by holding

This resulted in the German advance being further delayed. Furthermore, I will describe how French troops retreated to defend Paris from the
German advance. The Germans imagined that their advancement would be speedy and France would not be able to defend. Nevertheless, France
was able to actually relocate their troops very quickly and effectively. France had a war plan, it was called Plan XVII and it was essentially offensive
form the Maginot line into Alsace–Lorraine. Eventually, over 300,000 French soldiers were killed within two weeks. The French generals then
abandoned Plan XVII, they ordered their forces to return to protect Paris. The mobilisation of the French troops were done by train, taxis and
marching, together with help from Britain and Belgium to slow German advancement. This enabled France to succeed in mobilisation of their troops.
The German greatly underestimated how well France would be able to do this. By te time the Germans arrived in france the french troops were there
already waiting for them, France force were ready and well prepared. Moreover, I will explain how the Russian mobilisation of the army was much
more quickly than expected. The mobilisation began on 26th July, when it became evident that Austria–hungary would not stand for Serbia's partial
acceptance of their demand. Germany thought that Russian would take at least six weeks to move. In the reality, Russia

the story of a single soldier, but the shared experience of all who served and died during the war. As the novel opens, we find that all Paul has

Some people have the view that British generals like Haig were incompetent leaders.
How far does the sources support or contradict this interpretation?
Some people have the view that British generals such as Haig were useless leaders. Famous sources like 'O What a lovely War', 'Blackadder' and 'The

Britain and her allies won the war from encouraging new weapons and military tactics. After Haigs death in 1918, historians blamed him for needless

Another source which supports the interpretation that British generals were incompetent is source B1. John Laffin worked as a tour guide in
Australia. His parents both served witht he Australians in Gallipoli and France as nursing cops. Even though he didn't have a history degree, he was a
military historian who earned his living taking people on battlefield tours. He researched the war from the soldier's viewpoint and wrote a successful
history book titled "British Butchers and Bunglers of World War One"– a very emotive polemic title – which released to the public in 2003. The book
aims to expose the guilt of 'uncaring and stupid' generals. The passage from the book says that Haig and other stupid generals must be blamed for
'wilful blunders and wicked butchery' and that there can never be forgiveness for their 'sheer incompetence'. This source lacks reliability as it has been
written in confidence with other sources he has researched online. Laffin only presents one side of the argument and doesn't discuss the situation in
Verdun. The passage of the book was written in 2003– 80 years later from World War 1. However, his job as a tour guide in battlefields gives him an
advantage over other historians. This source is supported by other historians (B8 an B1) and soldiers (B2). This interpretation is contradicted by

The story is as relevant today as it was when published in 1929 because it is the story of more than war; it is the story of humanity. The book begins
with the death of Paul's friend. The men have, by this time, become almost desensitized to death. Kemmerich (the dying friend) owns a fine pair of
English airman's boots. It is a forgone conclusion that Kemmerich will no longer require them. It is not petty greed, but pragmatism, which drives
Muller's desire to have the boots. The troops' own equipment is ragged and worn, making anything in serviceable condition an improvement on what
they have. As we find out in the story, not only are the soldiers' boots worn out, but the artillery of the German army is also worn out. This may
symbolize that not only are the soldiers and equipment at the front worn out, but so is Germany as a whole. Germany was worn out and had no idea
what was going to happen, just as the soldiers had no idea where the artillery shells would land.
Paul reminisces about his days in school and how he and his friends believed the indoctrination they had received from their schoolmaster. However,
after experiencing war, Paul questions the fervent nationalism of the Germans. What has nationalism done for Germany other than destroy the country?

the first Caleb, who was 4 years old, "wandered away unnoticed, and had fallen into a river," and had died. As a result, the "Ceremony of Loss"
occurred, which is murmuring the name throughout the whole day, less often, quieter, so that the child is forgotten. To add on, this incident shows that
the community tried to eliminate any dangerous situations because perhaps the death of the first Caleb could cause problems by frightening the rest of
the community and in an attempt to to prevent this, they make sure the child who died, in this case, is forgotten. The text, The Giver, says, "Loss of a

Like usual, they forgot about what happened, even if it's a death. To continue on, they had a special order in which the community marked the first
Caleb's loss and the new Caleb's placement. When the first Caleb died, they had the Ceremony of Loss, which was when they completely forgot about
him and as stated by The Giver, "so that the little Four seemed to fade away gradually from everyone's consciousness." This explains that slowly, they
erased a child from their minds because they didn't want to face the fact that you can't protect everyone from everything and that not everything will
stay the same forever. They marked the new Caleb's replacement by performing another ceremony known as the "Murmur–of–Replacement." This was
directly the opposite of the Ceremony of Loss, and instead of the name slowly disappearing, it gradually became imprinted into everyone's minds once
more. The community murmured it quietly and slowly, and progressively, their voices became louder and

Storm Of Solitude

  • 1. Storm Of Solitude Storm of Solitude As I stood on the screened–in back porch at 4:00 AM watching the unstoppable force creep closer to destroying what little vestiges of the life we once had, all I could ask myself was how I missed the signs. Everyone knew this was coming except Amber and me, but no one bothered to tell us. Couldn't they see the hidden pain in our faces when we moved into the neighborhood six months before? We were strangers in a new world desperate for someone to have pity on us and lend a helping hand once in a while. It is like the people took one glance our way and decided we weren't worthy of their help. They felt we needed a little "testing of our faith" so to speak. My mind raced for a solution. The memories we had were... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was truly overwhelming, but since we were just married, we tentatively braced ourselves for the challenges that were to come. After all, young couples are supposed to be adventurous, right? It wasn't long before the optimism quickly faded away as we were swallowed whole by the city and slowly digested. The fumes of low tide and cigarette butts filled our lungs. The sound of bustling tourists and competing trumpeters blasted our ears. But the worst part about it was not the bombardment that numbed our senses, it was the isolation from everything we had come to know and love. We brought little things with us like pictures and trinkets. I had my signed golf ball from the '72 Masters and Amber had the sweat–stained rag that her father used for nearly two decades at GE before health inspectors demanded he get a new one. More importantly, we had each other, but we still missed the life we had in Atlanta. In all honesty, I probably shouldn't have resented New Orleans as much as I did. It wasn't the city's fault that we were isolated from everyone else so my disdain was slightly unfounded. In any case, when my sister Elise and her husband Hamp came to visit us Easter weekend six months after moving in, we were more than happy to see them. Once I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All Quiet On The Western Front All Quiet on the Western Front: The Innocence of Youth In All Quiet on the Western Front, the main character is a nineteen year –old, who tells his perspective of the war. Throughout the story, he talks about his recent class–mates and how they enlist in the war with him, and how he and his friends experience the war. In the story, it talks about the innocence that is taken away from the soldiers like Paul and his friends. The story is set in Germany during the First World War. Numerous events took place during this bloody war including the deaths of millions and the youth taken away from the young men that enlisted in the war. "Kantorek had been our schoolmaster, a stern little man in a grey tail–coat, with a fact like a shrew mouse." (10) Paul's old schoolmaster was a depiction of his recent youth and is one of the last real "youth–ism" that he will possess throughout the rest of his life. The quote is important to point out because the author (or in this case Paul) wants to address his teacher from his youth, and what's left of it. Now because of the war, his youth is gone. "We had no definite plans for our futures. Our thoughts of a career and occupation were as yet too unpractical a character to furnish any scheme of life." (21) At this point, Paul is so confident that his youth is taken away from him he begins to think about his future in the war. Since Paul and his friends lost their youth during the war, even their futures' were taken away from them in a way, not knowing how to maintain life after the war or even if they get out of the war. Over all, Paul in the story talked about his youth being taken away from him and how his generation will be stripped from their youth. Every soldier's youth was taken from them, whether or not they even survived the war; the soldier's also experienced the un–awareness of the consent in the war. The young men that enlisted in the war were not blamed for the war, but yet they have no say in the war so they are fighting by orders and not themselves. "A man with a small pointed ... • 3. Pat Conroy Lord Of Discipline Analysis In The Lords of Discipline, Pat Conroy accurately shows how the misuse of power and idealistic beliefs of acceptance can be catastrophic and even deadly. "My entrance to this marsh–haunted city is always filled with troubled meditations on both my education and my solitude during a four– year residence at the Institute. The city of Charleston, in the green feathery modesty of its palms, in the certitude of its style, in the economy and stringency of its lines, and the serenity of its mansions South of Broad Street, is a feast for the human eyes. But to me, Charleston is a dark city, a melancholy city, whose severe covenants and secrets are a powerful and beguiling as its elegance, whose demons dance their alley dances and compose their malign hymns to the side of the moon I cannot see. I studied those demons closely once, and they helped Kill off the boy in me", (Conroy, 1). More than likely, these patients will receive a prescription for antibiotics, but should they? Most acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs), do not require an antibiotic, the symptoms will resolve themselves over time without antibiotic treatment. The authors of the study are confident that their quality improvement approach can be successfully replicated in other family practice clinics. The methods used by the project could be easily implemented, the materials from the CDC's Get Smart about Antibiotics are inexpensive and readily available. The article does suggest that their study may have a serious flaw, called the Hawthorne Effect. The Hawthorne Effect or an observer effect acknowledges that both physicians and patients were fully aware they were participating in a quality improvement project. The project would have been more efficient if the participants were unaware they were being evaluated. When individuals believe they are not being observed the results tend to be more trustworthy. Ultimately, the project proved its hypothesis and educated individuals about the risks of overusing antibiotics. First, Lanny goes to Caney Creek to fish for some speckle trout. He only fished for speckle trout because an elderly man bought them for fifty cents apiece from Lanny. Lanny had to go to where everyone else stayed away from to catch these speckle trout. He even walked right past a No Trespassing sign and continued up the creek. Then Lanny came upon some pot plants on the bank, and he knew how much money they were worth. Lanny cut five plants down and took them to Leonard, the local drug dealer, and sold the plants for sixty dollars. Lanny knew this was easy money, so he quickly went back the next day for more. After selling the second batch of pot plants, Leonard warned Lanny that it was time to harvest and that the owners would be checking the plants soon. However, Lanny did not listen to Leonard and returned for more pot plants. He quickly learned this was a mistake when he stepped in a bear trap and found himself lying on the bank bleeding severely. Or maybe it's the people and the environment we grew up around? Most people would say that all these characterists would be true, and I'd agree. But if you really think hard about what makes you, YOU, then you'd realize that there is so much more than what meets the eye. Let's take a look into my life to see what made me the "masculine" person I am today. I can remember back to when I was about five or six years old. One time I did something and lied about it to my father, and he asked me a question; he said, "well you can either stand in the corner or you can take it like a man and get the belt." So I decided to take the belt. I'm not really sure why, I guess I thought that it would've looked better on my part. It was a way of showing that I could take it like a man and hold everything back. It's like my parents were subtlety telling me to not show any emotions, because that's what guys do they show no emotion. While I was in elementary school, I can picture all the events the boys would do at recess. Most of us would get together and make up teams to play kickball or football. It was either that or play on the monkey bars or something like that. While the boys were doing those activities, you could always find the girls huddled around the benches, sitting on the swings, or going down the slide. It's like there was this international divide. • 10. Argumentative Essay On Social Media What is social media? If one was to ask an everyday teenager of this generation, they would probably say something to the effect of "It's a digital platform that helps everyone stay connected no matter what they're doing." However, if one was to ask someone from the prior generation what social media is, they might say "It leads to the youth of America becoming more: anti–social, depressed, self–conscious, and more than likely destroys the chances of someone making a career for themselves later in life." So which answer is correct? Well, surprisingly enough the prior generation is. Social media leaves a digital footprint that can't be erased no matter what precautions are taken. In today's society, the digital footprint that someone leaves is seen as an ongoing resume for their future, whether they like it or not. It's seen too many times, whether it's in the movies or it happens to a friend, when someone goes for an opportunity such as a job interview, one of the biggest things employers take into account is what they post on their social media pages. It was reported that in 2015, one in ten job hunters are rejected due to what they post on social media. Whether it be complaints, inappropriate photos, etc., it was posted on the World Wide Web for everyone to observe. Additionally, everything that is/was posted on the internet is there for forever, and nothing can be done about that. Operation Barbarossa, as it was known, was launched on 22 June 1941 and completely took Russia by surprise. The widening war raging in Africa and eastern Europe were key distractions for Hitler from his ultimate goal of attacking Russia. Although the British army remained undefeated in the west, Hitler's goal proved an urgency for him to begin moving on the east. Whilst planning was made throughout 1940 for the invasion of Russia, time was favorable towards the Russians and they continued to mobilize their resources and strengthen their defense forces. The German army once again succeeded here, with the Ukraine being captured along with 600 000 Russian prisoners. With this success, the push for Leningrad and Moscow began once again, however the situation began to change with autumn rains slowing advances and winter creeping up. It was during the Russian winter that German troops entered Leningrad and began a 3–year siege, however the city never fell. At the same time, one army group reached the outskirts of Moscow but by December night temperatures fell to below 50 degrees, German soldiers lacked adequate clothing, fuel froze in the tanks, weapons jammed and the armies were struggling for supplies. It was then that the Russian army, reinforced with troops from the Eastern front, launched a major counter attack and drove the Germans back 150 kilometers back before they stabilized their line. In the course of the invasion, the Russians had lost over 5 million soldiers and Germany over 1 million, but the German campaign still failed. Though there is not one single causing factor, the Germans had underestimated the Russians who had men to spare and were encouraged by Stalin's message of Nationalism where he called on to defend Mother Russia against the invaders. The Third Battle of Ypres fought from July–November 1917 was a long costly battle, a perfect example of huge loss for little gain. This investigation will explore the causes and consequences of this battle, give an insight into what happened during the battle and how it was and still is significant to New Zealanders. Overall this battle was a long battle of attrition that did not help the Allies come closer to the decisive victory that they wanted. There are many causes of the Third Battle of Ypres but they can be broken down into three main ones. The first reason was to break through to the German U–boat bases on the Belgium coast. This was to stop the unsustainable losses they were inflicting on the British Navy. The second reason was to try and take pressure off the French line... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was some trouble with snipers and machine guns early on in the advance but progress continued at a steady rate. As a result of this progress the Allies had achieved their final objective of the capture of the Wilhelm Line by around noon of that day. The result of this successful attack was that all of the high ground around the Menin Road which had been fought over for months, had all been captured by the Allies. • 13. The Battle Of Stalingrad : Turning Point Of The Second... The Battle of Stalingrad is considered the turning point of the Second World War as the German forces failed to overcome the defense of the Russian army leading to their humiliating defeat at the hands of the Russians. It is commonly believed that this loss was due to Hitler's lack of trust in his own generals and his selfish desire to conquer an essentially useless piece of land. American writer Edwin Palmer Hoyt believes that if Hitler had granted his generals more flexibility, then Von Paulus could have saved some of his divisions from complete annihilation. Another perspective of the outcome is that it stemmed from Stalin's decision to allow for how own generals and commanders to take control over the battle while he put his focus on other things which would lead to the Soviet domination over the German army in a seemingly hopeless situation. In the first stages of the Russian counter attack against the German army, led by General Friedrich Paulus, the German plan for strategic retreat was stopped by Hitler himself who, in a radio message to Paulus, would say that surrender is not an option and to continue fighting until the German's were unable to continue. This evidently selfish and stubborn behavior from the leader of Nazi Germany forced the German army to brave the Russian winter and later force their surrender in 1943 by restricting the power of his generals on the front lines. The loss of manpower from this defeat would start the downfall of the power of Nazi ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Factors That Influence Rainfall in the United States Factors that Influence Rainfall in the United States A type of precipitation is rainfall and it develops when water vapor condenses into droplets in the atmosphere thus becoming too heavy to stay suspended in the air so gravity causes them to fall. The pattern or occurrence of rainfall in the United States or basically anywhere in the world depends on several factors such as ground elevation, wind directions, location within a continental mass, areas of low pressure, cool fronts, jet streams and even mountain ranges. For instance mountains have an influence on wind and wind is an important feature in rainfall, "The windward sides of mountainous islands in the trade wind regime are among the rainiest places on earth, where rains exceed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the pressure is 'high' it means that the air's pressure is higher than the pressure of the surrounding air in the area. A 'low' is where it is lower. This means that where the air is slowly descending the pressure is high and vice versa. So, as air descends, it warms, which inhibits the formation of clouds. This means that the air that descends in high pressure area has to get to high altitudes in some way which is why air actually rises in low pressure areas. Winds tend to blow into low pressure areas because are moves from higher pressure areas into lower pressure areas. When the wind moves into a low area the air moves up and eventually cools and rainfall comes about. Also the low pressure that causes the air to rise has to do with the Criolis Effect, which is the force caused by the Earth's spin that redirects moving air to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. According to meteorologist Tony Pann, who works with Coriolis Effect stated, "With the Coriolis effect, air circulates in patterns that depend on latitude. At the mid–latitudes of the USA, most weather systems move from west to east. However, systems tend to move from east to west near the poles and in the tropic" (Pann). It's typically swum in filtered swimming pools, but sometimes competitions can take place in open bodies of water. The overall objective is to swim faster than your competition. The race can be swum in different forms; the butterfly stroke, backstroke, breaststroke, front crawl, freestyle, an individual medley, and a relay race. Swimming each stroke requires specific techniques, and in competition, there are specific regulations concerning the acceptable form for the different strokes. A front crawl calls for you to kick hard with your feet, while bringing your arms over your head and into the water one at a time. While the backstroke has many similarities to the front crawl, you float on your back, rather than propel your front through the water first. The butterfly stroke calls for you to bring both arms over your head at the same time and push them into the water to propel yourself. The butterfly stroke uses a dolphin–style kick, which means that your legs will stay straight and together as you kick them through the water. The breaststroke usually means a frog–style kick, where you will bend your knees and then kick your legs out beneath the water. Your arm stroke will begin with a sweep out from your chest and then a sweep in back to your chest. Finally, although not used in competition, the sidestroke holds importance for swimmers because you can use it to rescue someone, since it only requires one arm. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Two of the main areas where the battle of the Somme was significant were in its military value, and the reactions it caused, on the home front. The battle of the Somme, intended to end the war that year, had ambitious objectives, it was significant for failing to achieve almost all of these. One of these was Beaumont Hamel, a fortified village behind the German lines. The Battle plan called for the village to be taken on the first day. The fact that the village was not taken until the very end of the battle on the 13th of November, illustrates how much the plan failed. Demonstrating the level to which the plan failed Private Anthony Stacey reports that this was a death trap for our boys as the enemy just set the sights of their machine guns on the gaps in the barbed wire and fired . Another objective, Serre, was not taken at all. In fact, the British staff were so unaware of modern weapons, that they had cavalry ready to attack after the infantry broke through. • 30. Essay about Battle of the Somme The Battle of the Somme epitomizes the harsh realities of trench warfare for the Allies and represents the negligent battle planning and technological advancements that are associated with the stalemate of World War One. Trench warfare was common across the Western Front, with similar strategies being employed by both opposing sides. Sir Douglas Haig, one of the British coordinators for the Somme offensive is blamed with an offensive strategy destined for failure. The British offensive, an utter failure, resulted in a stalemate, which was common throughout World War One. The British development of the tank, while it eventually ended the horrendous stalemate, was ineffectively used during the Somme. Trench warfare became a common ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The British went into the Somme with a mixed attack plan, which led to an unsuccessful first assault resulting in a battle of attrition. The opening day of The Battle of the Somme resulted in near 60,000 casualties for the British, the largest in British military history for a single day. Originally the Somme was supposed to be a French dominated offensive, however the Germans attacked to the South in Verdun occupying the majority of French troops. The British were then thrust into control of the offensive, leaving Sir Douglas Haig and General Rawlinson to arrange an offensive strike against the Germans. Haig advocated for the use of infantry including foot soldiers as well as cavalry to lead the offensive. Rawlinson countered with a bite and hold strategy, which involved fortifying a strong defense and warding off German counter attacks. Rather than committing to one strategy, the two were combined in order to create a week–long bombardment followed by an offensive attack on foot. The offensive was planned on a strict time table, as Haig did not trust those who were considered volunteer soldiers. This quote demonstrates Haig's disdain towards those who did not have significant military training, ""He tended to disdain and to suspect the motives of people who could not properly govern themselves." (Johnson). As a result of his dislike towards the volunteer army he designed the offensive so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Analysis Of Proposition Of Rational Expectations,... CHAPTER ELEVEN STUDY WITH INVARIANCE PROPOSITION OF RATIONAL EXPECTATIONS 11.1 Introduction The concept of Invariance Proposition of Rational Expectations, developed by Lucas, Sargent and Wallace in early seventies, presents the idea that the anticipated part of money supply affects price level. Since the present work is devoted to study the relationship between money supply and price level, the Invariance Proposition theory of rational expectation can be applied to examine the relationship between anticipated money supply and price level. In order to apply Invariance Proposition theory in examining the impact of anticipated money supply on price level, we need to estimate the anticipated money supply. There are several procedures to estimate the anticipated money supply; the present study has applied ARIMA structures of narrow and broad money supply for the estimation of anticipated money supply. After identifying anticipated money supply, a regression equation has been performed taking price level as dependent variable and anticipated money supply as explanatory variable. 11.2 ARIMA Model for M1 Money Supply In order to quantify anticipated money supply, the ARIMA model has been applied. For this purpose equation (11.1) has been employed for ARIMA structure for M1 money supply, on the basis of which the anticipated M1 money supplies has been quantified. • 32. Remarque 's The Trenches On The Front Lines From The... The realism, grisly detail, and irony Remarque injects his story of WWII in the trenches on the front lines from the German perspective somehow remains poetic because of his lyrical writing style. Nineteenth century society was not ready for Remarque's new language of war. Until this novel society held the illusion of war as both glorious and romantic. The idea of such a thing traces back to the ancient Spartans carrying forth to 19th century Europe (Traver 2002). Before Chapter One, Remarque introduces the idea of the ensuing pages are the work of a new language about war. "This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped its shells, were destroyed by the war" (Remarque Preface). The Significance of the Epigraph As the epigraph to the novel introduces Remarque's intention of writing the novel he dispenses with the familiar elements of excitement and romance thus favoring a stark and entirely unsentimental read. His language of war becomes an advocate for soldiers who meet death face to face finding war is not an adventure. It is this message about death that Remarque succeeds in his poetic fashion expressing his ideas engaging the reader into the crux of his message about the evil of and written in his own language. • 33. German Military Strategist In 1914 German military strategist were ready when the declarations of war began flying all over Europe. They intended to lock off the Russians in the east, smoothly kick France out of the war through a plan known as the Schliefffen Plan, then throw their full force, collaborating with Austria–Hungary, against the Russians. The Schliefffen Plan, named after General Alfred von Schlieffen who created it during 1905, called for invading the small countries like Luxembourg and Belgium in order to bypass to the north the strong fortifications along the French border. After a rapid conquest of the small countries, the German advance would continue into northern France, spin around Paris to the west and take the French capital. It almost worked, but German commander in chief General Helmuth von Moltke decided to send his troops east of Paris to engage and defeat the weakened French army straightly. In doing so he displayed his rightwing to counterattack by the French and a British Expeditionary Force, resulting in the First Battle of the Marne, September 6–10, 1914. Despite casualties in the hundreds of thousands, the battle was a stalemate, but it stopped the German drive on Paris. Both sides began digging a network of trenches. ... Essay about The Schlieffen Plan by Alfred Von Schlieffen In this essay I will explain what Schlieffen plan was and why it did not work step by step.It began when Germany declare war on Russia and France. However their allies Britain and Belgium stepped in to help while Austro–Hungary was alliance to Germany. The Schlieffen plan had been created by Alfred Von Schlieffen but he had died before world war one started. The plan was meant to be foolproof. First of all, Germany planned to defeat France quickly by marching through Belgium before Russia could get involved. It was intended to avoid a war on two fronts. Germany believed that Russia would take six weeks to mobilize their troops. Germany would hold the French on the frontier with their weak forces and follow this by holding up Russian ... The Germans imagined that their advancement would be speedy and France would not be able to defend. Nevertheless, France was able to actually relocate their troops very quickly and effectively. France had a war plan, it was called Plan XVII and it was essentially offensive form the Maginot line into Alsace–Lorraine. Eventually, over 300,000 French soldiers were killed within two weeks. The French generals then abandoned Plan XVII, they ordered their forces to return to protect Paris. The mobilisation of the French troops were done by train, taxis and marching, together with help from Britain and Belgium to slow German advancement. This enabled France to succeed in mobilisation of their troops. The German greatly underestimated how well France would be able to do this. By te time the Germans arrived in france the french troops were there already waiting for them, France force were ready and well prepared. Moreover, I will explain how the Russian mobilisation of the army was much more quickly than expected. The mobilisation began on 26th July, when it became evident that Austria–hungary would not stand for Serbia's partial acceptance of their demand. Germany thought that Russian would take at least six weeks to move. In the reality, Russia ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All Quiet On The Western Front Erich Maira Remarque's novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, chronicles the horrors of World War One, through the eyes of a fictitious nineteen year old character by the name of Paul Baumer. Though told through the matured mind of Paul, All Quiet on the Western front, isn't meant to be the story of a single soldier, but the shared experience of all who served and died during the war. As the novel opens, we find that all Paul has known since his arrival at the front is fear, despair, and death. As the story continues Paul describes the other soldiers of his unit, including his school mates with who he first enlisted, after the persistent patriotic speeches given to them by their school master, Kantorek. Paul gives an accounts, that it is because of people like Kantorek, who not only pressured them to join the military, but also forced ideals nationalism down their throats. Making even the most reluctant of his class mates enlist or face be called a coward. However after weeks of essential training, any allure that Kantorek may of painted in Paul's mind about joining the military is long lost underneath Corporal Himmelstoss. Underneath him Paul and his comrades are forced to constantly sweep snow, remake their beds, and crawl through the frozen mud. Even though at the time this seemed cruel treatment to Paul later realizes that, in some small way it did benefit him and the others for a soldiers life. How far does the sources support or contradict this interpretation? Some people have the view that British generals such as Haig were useless leaders. Famous sources like 'O What a lovely War', 'Blackadder' and 'The Trench' support this. However from the 1980s many military historians have challenged this interpretation and states that under Haigs leadership, Britain and her allies won the war from encouraging new weapons and military tactics. After Haigs death in 1918, historians blamed him for needless laughter of nearly 750,000 British soldiers on the Western Front and biographers pilloned him for his overconfidence, insensitivity and logical ... His parents both served witht he Australians in Gallipoli and France as nursing cops. Even though he didn't have a history degree, he was a military historian who earned his living taking people on battlefield tours. He researched the war from the soldier's viewpoint and wrote a successful history book titled "British Butchers and Bunglers of World War One"– a very emotive polemic title – which released to the public in 2003. The book aims to expose the guilt of 'uncaring and stupid' generals. The passage from the book says that Haig and other stupid generals must be blamed for 'wilful blunders and wicked butchery' and that there can never be forgiveness for their 'sheer incompetence'. This source lacks reliability as it has been written in confidence with other sources he has researched online. Laffin only presents one side of the argument and doesn't discuss the situation in Verdun. The passage of the book was written in 2003– 80 years later from World War 1. The story is as relevant today as it was when published in 1929 because it is the story of more than war; it is the story of humanity. The book begins with the death of Paul's friend. The men have, by this time, become almost desensitized to death. Kemmerich (the dying friend) owns a fine pair of English airman's boots. It is a forgone conclusion that Kemmerich will no longer require them. It is not petty greed, but pragmatism, which drives Muller's desire to have the boots. The troops' own equipment is ragged and worn, making anything in serviceable condition an improvement on what they have. As we find out in the story, not only are the soldiers' boots worn out, but the artillery of the German army is also worn out. This may symbolize that not only are the soldiers and equipment at the front worn out, but so is Germany as a whole. Germany was worn out and had no idea what was going to happen, just as the soldiers had no idea where the artillery shells would land. Paul reminisces about his days in school and how he and his friends believed the indoctrination they had received from their schoolmaster. However, after experiencing war, Paul questions the fervent nationalism of the Germans. What has nationalism done for Germany other than destroy the country? In blindly following the words of his elders, Paul has achieved nothing except to become an old man at the age of twenty. Not only does Paul now question his schoolmaster's reasoning, but he also ... As a result, the "Ceremony of Loss" occurred, which is murmuring the name throughout the whole day, less often, quieter, so that the child is forgotten. To add on, this incident shows that the community tried to eliminate any dangerous situations because perhaps the death of the first Caleb could cause problems by frightening the rest of the community and in an attempt to to prevent this, they make sure the child who died, in this case, is forgotten. This explains that slowly, they erased a child from their minds because they didn't want to face the fact that you can't protect everyone from everything and that not everything will stay the same forever. They marked the new Caleb's replacement by performing another ceremony known as the "Murmur–of–Replacement."
