Cue for Treason Essay
Tia Berardi ENG 1D1 Ms.Oliver Monday April 2nd 2012 Several Characters Can Have Loyalty Not
everyone possesses the quality of loyalty, but those that do are worth having a relationship with. The
author of Cue for Treason, Geoffry Trease, demonstrates this trait in many of the characters. The
most loyal bond in this book, which took place very early on in the novel, was Peter and Kit's. One
of the most significant bonds has to be amongst the Secret Agents, the Queen, and all of England.
Lastly, the most heroic form of loyalty is portrayed by Tom Boyd, Peter, and Kit. Each one of these
characters do not betray each other once. So, several characters in the novel show loyalty to one
another throughout. Peter and Kit are faced with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead she stays to help him and not leave him on his own. No matter what he said she will not
betray him, "'Ride on!' I bawled... Again Kit ignored my advice. She argued afterward that there was
no help she could hope to fetch, and in those circumstances she wasn't going to leave me" (Trease
253). This shows how much the two care for each other, and will not abandon each other when
situations get rough. Although the pair fights numerous times, in the end they are always there for
each other, and never betray each other's trust. But, this is not the last time loyalty was shown. The
Secret Agents show loyalty to the Queen, protecting her in every way possible, therefore
demonstrating loyalty to all of England as well. One of the first was a man by the name of
Walsingham. Walsingham was one of the very first Secret Agents, devoting his time and life to
protecting the Queen, and establishing the Secret Agent organization. Without Walsingham the
Secret Agency would not be as successful, "It was Walsingham who built up a wonderful system of
government spies and agents, to ferret out all the plots that were going and scotch the most before
they got too dangerous" (Trease 155–6). Walsingham established the Secret Agency, which only got
improved with a mission statement of protecting the Queen, thus keeping England under control.

The Rise Of Ludwig Van Beethoven
The rise of Ludwig van Beethoven into the ranks of history 's greatest composers was paralleled by
and in some ways a consequence of his own personal tragedy and despair. Beginning in the late
1790 's, the increasing buzzing and humming in his ears sent Beethoven into a panic, searching for a
cure from doctor to doctor. By October 1802 he had written the Heiligenstadt Testament confessing
the certainty of his growing deafness, his consequent despair, and suicidal considerations. Yet,
despite the personal tragedy caused by the "infirmity in the one sense which ought to be more
perfect in [him] than in others, a sense which [he] once possessed in the highest perfection, a
perfection such as few in [his] profession enjoy," it also served as a motivating force in that it
challenged him to try and conquer the fate that was handed him. He would not surrender to that
"jealous demon, my wretched health" before proving to himself and the world the extent of his skill.
Thus, faced with su!ch great impending loss, Beethoven, keeping faith in his art and ability, states in
his Heiligenstadt Testament a promise of his greatness yet to be proven in the development of his
heroic style. By about 1800, Beethoven was mastering the Viennese High–Classic style. Although
the style had been first perfected by Mozart, Beethoven did extend it to some degree. He had
unprecedently composed sonatas for the cello which in combination with the piano opened the era

Tone In Siren Song, & The Sirens
In all three works of art, the epic poem (The Odyssey), Atwood's poem ("Siren Song"), and
Waterhouse's Ulysses & The Sirens, all portray the Sirens differently by the author's tone.
Waterhouse uses art to set the dramatic and threatening tone while The Odyssey uses poetry to set
the dramatic tone. The tone of Atwood's poem depicts the Sirens as being mischievous yet bored.
First, Waterhouse uses art to portray the Sirens as dramatic and threatening by the choice of the
colors used. Odysseus is dressed in white which draws the eye to him as the main focal point, while
the Sirens are in all black, surrounding Odysseus and his men. The contrast in color depicts
Odysseus as to be heroic while draped in white, while the Sirens appear to be dark and threatening.
The Sirens hovering around the boat and trying to grasp the sailors attention, also makes this piece
of art look more menacing. From what we know from reading Homer's Odyssey, it would appear
that this is the artist's interpretation of how he saw the sirens and the sailors. ... Show more content

In this epic poem, the tone is dramatic because of the words used to depict not only the Sirens but
Odysseus and his men. The author used words like "flunged" and "harder", making the sentence
more dramatic and giving us a vivid image of the scene. When the author described the Sirens, he
used words like "ravishing" and "thrilling". When mentioning the song, the tone changed from
dramatic to condescending. The tone changed to condescending because in the song, the Sirens are
praising Odysseus and saying "famous Odysseus – Archaea's pride and glory –". This makes the
tone seem condescending because they are only trying to bring Odysseus to the

Ludwig Van Beethoven's Life Of Ludwig Van Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven was a German pianist and composer who is widely considered to be the
greatest of all time, whose compositions consisted combinations of vocals and a vast amount of
instruments. Beethoven was born in Bonn,Germany in 1770. He was a crucial figure in the world of
music connecting the Classical and Romantic ages of Western Music. The life of Beethoven was full
of struggle especially because of his deafness, and most of his important works were composed
during the last ten years of his life. He died at the age of 56. What I will be going over is his
background and his early life. Next I will be talking about his musical training that he went under
throughout his life. Lastly, I will be finishing it off about his deafness and how he had died. Johann
van and Maria Magdalena Beethoven had five children of which only three survived.Beethoven was
the first child to survive. The other two siblings who had also survived were Casper and Nikolaus.
Later in his life these two will have one of the greatest impact on Beethoven's life. Beethoven father
was a mediocre court singer even though he was more known for his alcholism. In
contrast,Beethoven grandfather was Kapellmeister Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven was then
subjected to brutal training by his father, who had hoiped that he would become a prodigy like
Mozart. It is also said that his father often pulled him out of bed in the middle of the night and

Hardy Robbins Case Study
This game can be so cruel sometimes – cruel enough to throw some bitter salt in the fruity punch of
a dramatic win. Tony Romo's heroics in the final quarter Sunday was his 24th game–winning,
comeback drive, the most by any quarterback since the '06 season. However, the Cowboys' 27–26
thrilling W over the rival Giants was followed by some terrible news. Elite receiver Dez Bryant
broke his foot, sidelining him for at least four to six weeks and possibly longer according to various
reports. With Bryant out, what will offensive coordinator Scott Linehan's game plan be without
Bryant's prowess in the slant game, crossing routes, his vertical game, physicality on fades in the
redzone, and most importantly, drawing double coverage to single up Romo's second, third and
fourth options? Linehan needed to abandon the ground game against the Giants when the Cowboys
fell behind, but the running back committee (as I've been expecting) did their damage in the passing
game. Dallas' trio set of runners, Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar present speed

routes, taking advantage of the Giants' suspect linebackers. ... Show more content on

Module 4 – Music of the Classical Period
Unit Summary
(20 points)
1. Name two important visual artists (not musicians) from the Classical Period. (1 point)
Jean–Honoré Fragonard
Jacques–Louis David
2. Name two important writers of literature (not musicians) from the Classical Period. ( 1 point)
Voltaire
Denis Diderot
Jane Austen
3. Discuss the political events and sociological factors that made the Classical Period such a time of
violent upheaval. (1 point)
The years 1750 to 1820 were characterized by the Seven Years' War, the American and French
Revolutions, and the Napoleonic Wars. These political events coupled with the drastic social change
proven by the shift of power from the aristocracy and church to the middle class, ... Show more

The music was written for amateurs because composers wanted more control rather than trusting the
improviser.
5. What were the new developments in the classical orchestra? (1 point)
There were four groupings: Strings (1st violins, 2d violins, violas, cellos, double basses),
Woodwinds (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons), Brass (2 French horns, 2 trumpets), and
Percussion (2 timpani).
A Classical Orchestra has a larger number of musicians.
Classical composers exploited the individual tone colors of orchestral instruments. A classical piece
has greater variety–and more rapid changes–of tone color. A theme might begin in the full orchestra,
shift to the strings, and then continue in the woodwinds.
The strings were the most important; first violins had the melody, along with clarinet melodic solos,
while the lower strings accompanied. The brass filled out the harmony, but did not play the main
melody. Timpani were used for rhythmic bite and emphasis.
6. Name and describe each of the movements in the standard four–movement pattern in classical
forms? (2 points)
Fast movement: The opening movement is usually in sonata form and stresses an exciting
development of short motives. It is vigorous and dramatic.
Slow movement: The second movement, not usually in the tonic key, is either in sonata form, A B A
form, or theme–and –variations form. It is lyrical and slow.
Dance–related movement: The third movement is

The Characteristics Of Beethoven And The Emperor Symphony
The String Quartet was dedicated to Joseph Haydn, who was Beethoven's teacher
These characteristics of the "Hunt" Quartet are found in the Emperor concerto, especially in the 6/8
Finale, which uses solely triadic melodies based on the tonic and dominant chords exclusively
In some ways, Haydn, with his "Military Symphony and the great E–flat symphony no

The Emperor Concerto uses similar characteristics of the Military Symphony no

expectation, stops and rests to introduce the essential element of silence, and a turn to the minor to
foretell the forthcoming use of that mode to darken the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In his early works, when Beethoven could hear the full range of frequencies, he made use of higher
notes in his compositions
As his hearing failed, he began to use the lower notes that he could hear more clearly
Works including the Moonlight Sonata, his only opera Fidelio and six symphonies were written
during this period
The high notes returned to his compositions towards the end of his life which suggests he was
hearing the works take shape in his imagination
E–flat Major, the key of the Emperor concerto, is closely related to its relative C minor, as they both
share three flats in the key signature
A lot of scholars have explored the heroism of C minor, however I would argue the fact that what
applies to C minor can also be said of E– flat

Who Is Ludwig Van Beethoven's Personal Life?
Ludwig Van Beethoven's personal life was a struggle due to becoming deaf, although, some of his
best symphonies were written in the last 10 years of his life when he couldn't hear that well.
Beethoven's exact birthdate is unknown but he was baptized December 17, 1770. He was born in the
city of Bonn in the Electorate of Cologne. Ludwig had two brothers that had survived into
adulthood, their names were Caspar, born in 1774 and Johann, born in 1776. At some point in time
during the births of his brothers, Beethoven's father started teaching him music. But the way his
father was teaching him was wrong; Beethoven's father forced him to play music forcefully and
brutally. In fact, there were even reports of neighbors hearing the young boy cry whilst ... Show

Beethoven had his first public debut in March 29, 1795. Even today, there is still a debate about
what he played, most scholars believe he played the "first" piano concerto in C Major. Shortly after,
he decided to publish three piano trios which were an enormous financial success. In April 2, 1800
he debuted his symphony 1 in a C major at the Royal Imperial Theater in Vienna. Later he grew to
detest the piece by saying that he did not know how to compose then. After that, he started to
compose piece after piece, including The Creatures of Prometheus in 1801 which was replayed over
20 times in the Royal Imperial Theater in Vienna. Near this time, Beethoven and the rest of Europe
was frightened at the news of Napoleon claiming himself first consul, and later, named himself
Emperor of France. Then in 1804, (a couple weeks after Napoleon named himself emperor of
France) Beethoven composed symphony 3 in Napoleon's honor, which was later renamed to Eroica
Symphony because he grew disillusioned of Napoleon. The piece was also probably his grandest
and most original piece. At the same time he was writing these great pieces of music, he was faced

Also, these great foreign players' skills have been influential in a global and increasingly diverse

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6
Symphony No. 6 – A Palette of Human Emotions
By: Gunnar Moll
Peter Illyich Tchaikovsky is one of the most famous Russian composers. He was born in Votkinsk
on May 7, 1840 into a middle class family. His family greatly supported his musical interests. They
gave him piano lessons and provided him with the instruction of music theory. Their move to St.
Petersburg proved to be a significant milestone is Tchaikovsky's life. It had set the course for
Tchaikovsky's progress and success in the musical world.
From September of 1850 to May of 1859, Tchaikovsky attended the School of Jurisprudence. At this
boarding school in St. Petersburg, he received an excellent education and further pursued his interest
in music. During this time, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The general plan of Tchaikovsky's symphonies includes a very 'pessimistic' first movement, a sad,
peaceful second movement, an allegro movement (often in dance form) and a fourth movement full
of vigor. His 6th symphony, the Pathetique, is an exception. The themes are broad, decorative, and
striking. The orchestration is rich – but without any attempt at spectacular effects. The last
movement is slow and mournful, and recent research reveals the reason. The Pathetique was only
partly finished when news spread of a homosexual 'encounter' Tchaikovsky had with a fellow
student. Some believe that the composer finished the symphony as a farewell to life. The scoring is
for the standard symphonic orchestra with winds, brass, strings, timpani, and other percussion
instruments. It was premiered in St. Petersburg with Tchaikovsky himself leading the orchestra.
The 1st movement is in sonata form. The slow introduction to this symphony is unusual in that it
begins in the subdominant key – E minor, solemnly introduced by the bassoons. It modulates into B
minor and the tempo increases for the principal subject. This theme is elaborated and developed, and
a march–like motif forms a bridge passage leading to a climax. The strings then introduce an
amorous, song–like second subject in D major. The development section enters with a bang. This
section brings no startling thematic growth or transformation, but is

Bilbo Heroism
The Hobbit is a very adventurous tale brimming with various fantasy elements. These include, but
are not limited to, magical spells, talking animals, fictitious species such as dwarves and goblins,
and of course, heroic and valiant characters. While there are only a few truly heroic characters in the
novel, each plays a very prominent role in the story. Over the course of the story there were three
specific protagonists that deserved such a title: Gandalf, Bilbo, and Bard. I feel that these three
displayed courageous, valiant personalities through their character's efforts within the story, more so
than others might have. Gandalf demonstrates some of the most heroic traits of any character in the
entire story. This is made evident early on when the wizard saves the dwarves and Bilbo from a
band of unintelligent trolls and later from an underground civilization of goblins. In both of these
situations he uses his clever instincts to outsmart his foes. For example, when the group was
captured by trolls, he did an impersonation of one of them enabling the trio to argue for a very long
amount of time in order to distract them. Eventually, when he leaves to take care of his then

His orchestral music includes around 30 symphonies and 12 cello concertos. Beethoven composed 9
symphonies, 5 piano concertos, 1 violin concerto, 32 piano sonatas, 6 string quartets, his great Mass
the Missa solemnis, and one opera, Fidelo.
Beethoven devoted himself to study and performance and while working under Haydn's direction;
he sought to master counterpoint – counterpoint being the relationship between voices that are
harmonically polyphony yet independent in rhythm and contour. This was European classical
tradition, and much of the common practice of the Baroque period. Beethoven lost his hearing
around 1798; having the cause of his deafness unknown, his hearing only partially recovered and
during its gradual decline, was impeded by a severe form of tinnitus – the hearing of sound when no
external sound is present. This is where he threw himself the music writing Sonatas for Piano and
the second and third symphonies. The third symphony being in honor of Napoleon Bonaparte. The
move from Heiligenstadt back to Vienna marked a change in his musical style. This was the start of
his "heroic" period which was characterized by many original compositions of a grand scale – a
term more frequently used as an alternative name for the middle period. Beethoven wrote the last

The Importance Of The Film Adaptation By William Shakespeare
To act is to breath life into a story that is otherwise a corpse, filled with the paradox of potential
energy. Also known as one of the most difficult crafts to master, acting is many things, but overall
the skill of adapting words into a visual experience that audiences then digest and carry with them
as they continue in their own lives. When a non–actor thinks about acting, one may assume it is an
easy job, but the conscious psychological work (skilled) actors put forth in their performances is no
easy feat, especially if they are able to come across so authentically that viewers assume acting is
easy. However, acting is difficult, and even more difficult when playing a role that was adapted from
a novel, as scholar Dudley Andrew asserts in his chapter "Adaptation" in James Naremore's book
"Film Adaptation." He points out that because the novel has a large fan base before it is adapted,
there is also a group of people waiting to scrutinize the film once made. This, in turn, grants the
novel a greater sense of superiority over the adaptation, because viewers– fans of the novel– assume
that the film will be worse.
Although viewers have their prejudices on film adaptations, they normally attack the structure of the
story, exclaiming that film did not stay faithful to the original story; only when a role is poorly cast
do the scrutinizing viewers point out the acting. In some cases, however, the actor's performance is
so precise that it, in itself, carries the

Biography Of Ludwig Van Beethoven 's Symphonies
Ludwig van Beethoven's nine symphonies are indispensable pieces of music and contributed to him
being referred to as one of the most famous musicians in all of musical history. His symphonies are
still played today and are recognized around the world. He is known as a symphonic master due to
his nine symphonies. Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer during the transitional period
between the Classical and Romantic eras. Beethoven's symphonies were greatly influenced by
Haydn and Mozart in the beginning, but they showed remarkable signs of his individuality and
eventually transformed into his own style. His life is categorized into three periods; early period,
heroic period, and later period, in which his music had distinct characteristics in each of the time
periods. His symphonies were first composed in a very classical style that stemmed from his
mentors, to later develop into a more romantic style with his own personal touch to finally compose
the music that he wanted, without thinking about the music he thought he was supposed to compose.
The early period of Beethoven's life lasted approximately six years, from 1794 to 1800. This
period began directly after Beethoven met the famous composer Franz Joseph Hayden and moved to
Vienna to study with him for two years. Although the lessons with Hayden were not successful due
to a personality conflict, Haydn greatly influenced Beethoven's early period. This period of his life
encompassed smaller musical pieces

Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist, thought to be the greatest of all time by
many. He was one of the most pivotal and crucial figures of the Transitional period between the
Classical and Romantic eras. He has influenced nearly every composer to come after him. Even
after his hearing started to deteriorate, he continued to compose his beautiful, extraordinary
masterpieces. Some of his most important works were written while he was almost completely deaf.
Beethoven was born in the city of Bonn, formerly the provisional capital of West Germany. It is
uncertain exactly what day Beethoven was born, but it is a fact that he was baptized December 17,
1770 making December 16 his most likely birthdate. Both his father and his grandfather were
professional singers, so Beethoven grew up around music. Although his father, Johann van
Beethoven was only a mediocre singer and more commonly known as an alcoholic, Beethoven's
grandfather, Kapellmeister Ludwig van Beethoven, was Bonn's most prosperous, eminent musician.
At a very early age, Johann van Beethoven taught Beethoven to play the clavier, a stringed keyboard
instrument. Johann was a harsh instructor, and would beat young Beethoven when he hesitated or
made a mistake playing. Almost every day, Johann would even beat his son, lock him in the cellar,
or deprive him of his much needed sleep so he could get even more practice. Johann arranged for
his son's first public recital "little son of 6 years" (even though

The Faithful Executioner: Life and Death, Honoer and Shame...
Joel F. Harrington's The Faithful Executioner: Life and Death, Honor and Shame in the Turbulent
Sixteenth Century, is about Meister Frantz Schmidt and the role he played as an executioner and
healer in Germany and the life he wanted and pursued during and afterwards. Fulfilling an inherited
and unwanted roll as executioner, often considered a curse, Schmidt was determined to seek
redemption through social respectability and not fall into the normal stigma of an executioner's life.
"Establishing a good name among wary locals remained a lifelong endeavor for Meister Frantz." (p.
131) Armed with self–discipline and self–righteousness, he committed to this endeavor by not
falling for the normal traps (public use of prostitutes and drunkenness) that usually followed the
dishonorable position. Schmidt was "faithful" in his duties but also as a respectable man of society.
Sixteenth century Germany was a time and place of revolution and reformation. To keep the order
and punish individuals for their crimes, an executioner was required to provide justice. In addition,
prosperous cities were eager to promote safeness and attract trades. In hopes of this, they adopted
ordinances. When someone broke the law, and equal punishment was required and thus entered the
executioner. His responsibilities included not only questioning, torturing and killing his assigned
criminals, but he also served as a healer. These duties as healer would later lead to his life as a
doctor. Sadistic in ways,

Beethoven: the Greatest Composer of All Time.
"The instrumental music of the German composer Ludwig van Beethoven forms a peak in the
development of tonal music and is one of the crucial evolutionary developments in the history of
music as a whole." ~ Unknown Mozart aside, Ludwig van Beethoven is the most famous classical
composer of the western world. Beethoven is remembered for his powerful and stormy
compositions, and for continuing to compose and conduct even after he began to go deaf at age 28.
The ominous four–note beginning to his Fifth Symphony is one of the most famous moments in all
of music. He wrote nine numbered symphonies in all. Beethoven never married. After his death his
friends found letters to a lover he called "Immortal Beloved," whose identity has never ... Show

In 1812, however, he wrote a passionate love–letter to an 'Eternally Beloved', but the letter was
never sent. With his powerful and expansive middle–period works, which include the Pastoral
Symphony, Symphonies nos.7 and 8, Piano Concertos nos.4, and 5 and the Violin Concerto, as well
as more chamber works and piano sonatas. Beethoven was firmly established as the greatest
composer of his time. His piano–playing career had finished in 1808. That year he had considered
leaving Vienna for a secure post in Germany, but three Viennese noblemen had banded together to
provide him with a steady income and he remained there, although the plan foundered in the
ensuing Napoleonic wars in which his patrons suffered and the value of Austrian money declined.
The years after 1812 were relatively unproductive. He seems to have been seriously depressed, by
his deafness and the resulting isolation, by the failure of his marital hopes and by anxieties over the
custodianship of the son of his late brother, which involved him in legal actions. But he came out of
these trials to write his profoundest music, which surely reflects something of what he had been
through. There are seven piano sonatas in this, his 'late period', including the turbulent
'Hammerklavier' op.106, with its dynamic writing and its harsh, rebarbative fugue, and op.110,
which also has fugues and much eccentric writing at the

Analysis Of The Brothers K
THE BROTHERS K By David James Duncan. 645 pp. New York: Doubleday.
THE 19th–century Russian novel has been born again in "The Brothers K," David James Duncan's
wildly excessive, flamboyantly sentimental, tear–jerking, thigh–slapping homage to Dostoyevsky
and Tolstoy –– and the game of baseball.
For the title isn't merely a spin on "The Brothers Karamazov," though Mr. Duncan makes frequent
references to that heavy tome. "K," we are reminded, is also the baseball–scorecard symbol for
striking out –– and thus, as Mr. Duncan extrapolates it, for failing, flunking, pratfalling, making a
bad situation even worse. But it can have a positive side as well. "To lose your very self for the sake
of another," he adds, "is . . . the only way you're ever going to save it."
The strikeout kids are the brothers Chance, four boys of the baby–boom generation born to Hugh
Chance, a worldly–wise and weary fastball–slinging minor–league pitcher, and Laura, Hugh's
staunchly conservative Seventh–day Adventist wife. Kincaid, the novel's principal narrator; his
brothers, Everett, Irwin and Peter, and their twin sisters, Beatrice and Winifred, grow up in Camas,
Wash., a working–class town where Hugh supplements his meager baseball salary by working at the
local paper mill.
Everyone believes that Papa Chance is destined for the big leagues –– until an accident at the mill
crushes the thumb on his pitching hand. Laura declares that this, like all tragedies, is God's will, and
that nothing can be done to make it better. The family settles for a life of noisy desperation until a
foulmouthed surgeon offers to repair the injured thumb with bones from Papa's toe. Thus Hugh
Chance is reborn as his team's pitching coach and "stupid situation reliever," known, of course, as
Papa Toe.
For a while, the national pastime, seen on television and from rump–punishing bleachers far from
the bright lights of the major leagues, becomes a complex metaphor for all that Papa Chance and his
sons hold sacred. Everett, the eldest, even goes so far as to mark the beginning of the turbulent 60's
not with the Kennedy assassination or the arrival of the Beatles but with the day Roger Maris
became "the assassin of a legend," hitting 61 home runs and breaking Babe

Beethoven's Seventh Symphony Analysis
Symphony No. 7 in A Major (Op. 92), completed in 1812, might have been one of Ludwig Van
Beethoven's most popular pieces. The seventh of Beethoven's nine symphonies, its premiere concert
(December 1813 in Vienna) was performed at a charity concert in order to benefit the soldiers who
had been wounded a few months prior in the battle of Hanau. It was performed three times in ten
weeks following its premiere. During the time of the symphony's premiere, Vienna was still
distressed due to being taken over by Napoleon in 1805 and 1809 and yearning for victory; the
audience at the premiere seemed to have loved the energy and beauty of the piece. The Seventh
Symphony had been dedicated to both Count Moritz von Fries and Russian Empress Elisabeth ...

The Seventh Symphony itself can and has been described in many words and fashions. It's
victorious, moving, energetic, powerful, and full of heart. The piece is known for its rhythmic
devices (such as dotted rhythm and repeated rhythmic figures) and the celebratory emotion to it, in
which makes listeners want to dance and burst into blissful joy. It involves four movements: 1. Poco
sostenuto – Vivace, 2. Allegretto, 3. Presto – Assai meno presto (trio), and 4. Finale, Allegro con
brio. The score includes two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two
trumpets, two drums (in which are tuned to A and E, except in the scherzo where they are in F and
A), and basses. The first movement is in A major, with repeated modulations between C major and F
major. The second movement also includes modulations (originally in A minor with switches to A
major) and the third movement is in F major. The first movement of Symphony No. 7 is noted for its
long ascending scales as well as its applied dominants relative to its C major and F major
modulations. The Introduction begins with a short A chord from the full orchestra. After eight bars,
the piece has briefly entered the key of F major already and is now accompanied by scales of two
octaves which begin softly, similar to the way a person creeps up and down a staircase. These scales
repeat, gradually becoming louder and more extravagant. The third theme

How Does Beethoven Affect Society
Ludwig van Beethoven Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany in 1770 to Johann van Beethoven
and his wife, Maria Magdalena. He took his first music lessons from his father, who was tenor in the
choir of the archbishop–elector of Cologne. His father was an unstable, yet ambitious man whose
excessive drinking, rough temper and anxiety surprisingly did not diminish Beethoven 's love for
music. He studied and performed with great success, despite becoming the breadwinner of his
household by the time he was 18 years old. His father 's increasingly serious alcohol problem and
the earlier death of his grandfather in 1773 sent his family into deepening poverty. At first,
Beethoven made little impact on the musical society, despite his father 's ... Show more content on

His works of the decade from 1802 to 1812 represent an expansion of the tighter forms of Haydn
and Mozart, as is apparent in the Eroica Symphony and the Piano Concerto no. 5 (Emperor, 1809),
as well as in Symphony no. 5 (1808). The few works of the years after 1812 revived and expanded
the more relaxed musical structures Beethoven had employed in the 1790s. In 1818 he returned to
the tightly structured heroic style in his Piano Sonata in B–flat Major op. 106 (Hammerklavier), a
work of unprecedented length and difficulty. The works of Beethoven 's last period are marked by
an individuality that later composers would admire but could scarcely emulate. In the Ninth
Symphony and the Missa solemnis Beethoven gave expression to an all–embracing view of
idealized humanity. In the five string quartets of 1824 to 1826, Beethoven achieved an ideal
synthesis between popular and learned styles and between the humorous and the sublime. Judged
inaccessible in their time, the string quartets have become– as have so much of Beethoven 's output–
yardsticks against which all other musical achievements are

Characters And Character Analysis Of All The Pretty Horses
All The Pretty Horses, by Cormac McCarthy, follows a trio of teenage boys who are making their
way from Texas to Mexico, the hardships they face along the way, and what they encounter once
they get there. The dynamic between these, loosely titled friends, is an interesting one that changes
throughout the book based on how the characters themselves change. With wildly contrasting
personalities but the similar goal, the relationships between the boys are both strained and cordial
throughout the novel. John Grady, although being the leader of the pack, is a man of little words and
a lot of actions. Like the famous saying goes, opposites attract, this is true for the relationship that
John Grady shares with Lacey Rawlins. Rawlins is more of ... Show more content on

The curious thing is that John Grady genuinely didn't see himself as a leader and I think that is what
made him so respectable to his friends and adults a like. His role as leader slowly changed
throughout the novel as his relationship with the Rawlins and Blevins changed. The first hit to his
position as leader comes when Blevins dies. At the end of the novel when John Grady is speaking
with the judge about all the things he felt guilty about he talks about how he feels about the death of
Blevins. When he says, "I stood there and let him walk that boy out in the trees and shoot him and I
never said nothin," (McCarthy 293) you can see how it affected him and looking back, how it
affected his leadership. He feels the guilt, he assumes that as the leader he could've done something,
anything, different and saved a life, a life that he felt was in his hands. After taking the hit to his
leadership abilities his relationship with Rawlins changed and they became more alike in some
ways, and their relationship slowly started unraveling before him. This leads to his softer side of his
personality. At the beginning of the novel we have this heroic cowboy figure who can do anything
he sets his mind to, the most confident. The second half of the novel we see the more emotional side
of him when he loses Alejandra and his Abuela. Whenever Alejandra and himself part for the last
time we see John Grady's actions show his

Concert Critique #1 I have never been personally a fan of the romantic orchestra music but going to
listen to a concert live is breathtaking. I attended the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra,
Masterpieces concert with music director Fouad Fakhouri performing Igor Stravinsky's Symphony
of Psalms and Gustav Mahler's Symphony No.1 in D major. There was a full stage of musicians and
a complete choir to back it up.
The first half of the performance was a complete orchestra of woodwinds, strings, drums, brass,
excreta and a four part choir. Overall the performance took no longer than thirty minutes to play the

Mr. Fakhouri had also explained how this is one of his favorite pieces and just had to have his
orchestra perfect, as they did successfully.
After a minor wobble of the director stand, a few adjustments and giggles, Symphony No.1 in D
major began. The first movement started off with an eerie introduction, with the first two notes
morphing into a birdcall as well as main theme but a very magical sound. It made for a very
soothing, romantic time. Throughout the piece I felt as if it told a story as most music does, what I
came to believe it was a love story. The Allegro begins in the cello with the second Wayfarer song,
"Ging heut morgen Ubers Feld," (I Walked this Morning over the Field). With a light and happy
tone in the beginning as if two lovers had just met, this was the main theme of this movement.
Suddenly there was a deep, heavy part maybe one of despair in paradise but that only lasted for a
short period as it came to a victorious ending of happily ever after. (Kahn)
The second movement Scherzo, gave more of an elegant, royal ball sound. Where the women dress
in gowns and the men in tuxedos, while drinking wine and dancing the night away. This movement
has the rhythm of the Landler, an Australian folk dance. It conforms to the classic minuet and trio
form though Mahler takes the first section beyond the standard repeat structure. The first three notes
of the Scherzo and the Trio recall the birdcall theme from the first movement. If

In John Updike's popular short story– "A&P", the main character, Sammy may seem like he has a
typical life like any other teenage boy would. Yet Updike proceeds to explain that "A&P" is not just
an ordinary story. In Updike's short story, Sammy is eventually faced with the consequences of his
actions and is forced to mature more than what he already anticipated being. Saldivar's article states
"He needs a sympathetic listener (or reader), someone who will grasp the meaning he is

Although it turns his life to unordinary, Sammy views the girls as a refreshing and escaping scene
for himself. He was used to seeing the regular, ordinary customers that he referred to as sheep.
Something about the girls demeanor when entering "A&P" left Sammy with a inspirational, riving
feeling. Porter later in his article discusses why he thought Sammy quit his job, which ultimately
made his life change. He viewed it as Sammy making a gesture as both a statement towards the girls
decency and a rejection of "A&P" and the misdirected values for which the store held. The action
that Sammy made was an exaggerated result from his youth. His action does not diminish from the
simple goodness of his chivalric intent, nor does it take away the importance of his personal
commitment. Although Sammy knows that he will feel this for the rest of his life and that he
separated himself from the flock and the "A&P" crowd. Sammy chose to set himself against the
majority. But Sammy also understood that he could not start something and not follow through with
it whether it made his life ordinary or not. Once Sammy realized that not to follow the voice of
conscience is to be false to ones own integrity and would be living a lie, he chose to live an honest
and significant life instead. Sammy considers himself as being a mature young man but in certain

Why Forrest Gump Is Very Much An Epic
An Epic is defined as a long poem, typically derivative of ancient traditionally orally related tales
that narrated the feats and adventures of heroic or often legendary figures, or the gallant history of a
nation. I believe Forrest Gump is very much an epic. When a story transcends multiple lifetimes and
incorporates many events across generational lines, it may be then considered epic. Forrest Gump, a
tale about a man of slight mind but significant heart who originates from deficiency to become an
American Hero leading one simple life leading to an adventure after another.
The characterizations in the film and the original book by author Winston Groom will need to be
explored to fully extrapolate on what make Forrest Gump an epic in its own right. These two
manifestations have noticeably different characterizations of the title character and minor characters
along with additional events, or changes to the timeline.
Many of the events in the story are comparable to happenings in other epic tales as well such as
Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey and to a lesser extent in its precursor Homer's The Iliad.
Odysseus's journey and the epic adventure that was Forrest Gump's life are quite reminiscent of
each other. When Forrest Gump leaves Greenbow, Alabama to play football for the University of
Alabama he starts his long journey away from home. He travels to Vietnam, Washington D.C, New

Paul Revere's Ride
On the eve of the Revolutionary war, April 18th, 1775, a well–known man, Paul Revere, rode
through every Middlesex village and farm to warn the colonists of a rumoured British march
towards Concord, in which they were going to seize ammunition. This warning resulted in militia
waking up and grabbing weapons to fend off the British and help lead to a famous victory. Many
people refer this heroic action as the midnight ride of Paul Revere, but Revere was not the only
heroic man on that historical night according to "The Other Riders." There were two other riders:
Samuel Prescott and William Dawes. They both played very important roles in alerting Boston of
the impending attacks that were about to take place.
The poem, Paul Revere's Ride, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow shows a clear bias statement
towards Paul Revere. Longfellow states "..he came to the bridge in Concord town." However, in
"The Other Riders" it says, "...Dawes and Revere set out for Concord together, joined by Dr. Samuel
Prescott" and "It was Prescott who warned the town of Concord..." There was no mention of the

ammunition in Concord, that is a really big deal. If it weren't for him, who knows if Paul could have
made all of the stops and reach Concord in time. Over the years many people have wondered and
questioned why only Revere was mentioned and honored for his heroism. The text in "The Other

significant because it demonstrates how the other messengers did just as much as Paul Revere and
that they deserve equal recognition for what they

Heroic Man Versus The Flawed Gods Essay
Heroic Man Versus the Flawed Gods in Homer's Odyssey
Homer's Odyssey is one of the great epic poems of Western literature and explores a variety of
profound themes. Critical among these themes is man's relationship with the gods and how this
relationship frames his path through life in pursuit of ancient Greek heroic ideals. This report
introduces and explains these ideals and then explores how Odysseus's adventures throughout the
Odyssey fit with them. It will be demonstrated that although Odysseus, like all heroes, strives for a
good measure of self–determination and independence from the gods, and the varied episodes in
which he finds himself have close parallels with the gods' own experiences as documented
throughout the broader canon of classic Greek mythology.
The Greek hero pursues a wide array of objectives throughout his life. These objectives include
glory (kleos), prestige (aristeia), and independent merit (arete) in the face of fate. (HEROIC CODE).
By striving for these objectives, the hero seeks to establish his independence from the gods. What
must be recognized from the outset is that this is in actuality a lost cause. It is the gods who created
man. Technically, the titan Prometheus, and man is ultimately destined to fail; only in the grave does
he find final resolution of peace. The creation of man parallels the creation of the gods, which
explains the nature of his underlying struggle. Recall that Zeus, the king of the gods, only acceded
to his throne by

Ludwig van Beethoven was a great composer at his time. He was a German composer and born in a
big family whose interest and inclination is music. Though at the age of 20, he was already known
as a pianist and a composer with distinctive talent, it was at the age of 30 that Beethoven was
recognized as a talented pianist. In 1796, his life changed when he started to feel deafness. At first,
he was dismayed and become irritable so that he almost lost his hope but due to his strong
determination, he continued to compose music. He was able to create wonderful and well–loved
music even though he became totally deaf. Beethoven was the grandson of a musician of Flemish
origin named Lodewijk van Beethoven (1712–1773). Beethoven was named after his grandfather, as

common trait. If you said Ludwig van Beethoven, you would be correct. One of the greatest
composer ever, only to be rivaled by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He happened to be deaf when he
created many of his famous works. Today, I am going to tell you about his childhood, early life, then
to his later stages in life where he was deaf. But it was when he became deaf, he produced his
greatest works of music. Ludwig was baptized on December 17, 1770 in Bonn Germany. Many
believe that he was actually born on the 16th, as babies during his time were baptized within 24
hours. Out of the seven children that his parents had, only three sons survived. Ludwig being the
eldest of the three. His first teacher was his father, who was a singer in Court at Bonn. He noticed
early on that Ludwig had an incredible musical talent. He saw him as the next Mozart. His father,
Johann van Beethoven would practice with Beethoven day and night. There have been records from
neighbors that say they saw Johann beat Ludwig when he missed a note, or hesitated (Bio, 2016).
His father was very cruel to him, and a very much so an alcoholic. Ludwig was so talented that his
father forced him to perform at the age of seven. Though he when he show was being advertised, it
was called the "little son of six years" (which was the age that Mozart first performed in front of
Empress Maria Theresia). Beethoven always struggled

Essay on LACMA Concert
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has a website that announces its programs. Anyone can
easily find and choose a concert. I chose a concert for Sunday July 25, 2010. This concert was
emerging artists from Ipalpiti Festibal 2010. It included the four pieces of music that are described
below. One of these was Fantasiestucke, Opus 88, both Romanze and Duet were preformed. This
concerto was performed by pianist Luiza Borac, violinist Vladimir Dyo, and cellist Yves Dharamraj.
The second piece was Ahnung, a new discovery piece from Kinderszenen. This piece was U.S.
Premiere, played solo by the pianist Luiza Borac. The third piece was Piano Quartet in E–flat major,
Opus 47. This piece was an Andante cantabile piece. This concerto was ... Show more content on

I discovered that an "Ahnung" is a German word, Which had many similar meaning in the
translation; it means inkling, notion, hunch, apprehension and etc. After I went home, I want to
listen to this piece deeply. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a full piece about this song.
I also enjoyed listening to this piece Fantasiestucke, Opus 88. This piece was played in Romanze
and duet, and was performed by the pianist Luiza Borac, violinist Vladimir Dyo, and cellist Yves
Dharamraj. After a deep sesearch about this piece I find out that the work was came at a happy time
in the composer's life: Schumann had married his beloved Clara Wieck in 1840 after her father had
made many attempts to thwart their matrimonial plans. The four pieces, or movements, comprising
the trio are "Romanze," "Humoreske," "Duett," and Finale. During this program I feel that the
"Romanze" opens in a tentative, mysterious mood, but then turns warmly Romantic, the piano
dominating throughout. The "Duett" that follows, marked Slowly and with feeling, is for cello and
violin, the piano providing a soft, running accompaniment to their passionate singing. The Finale,
designated in March tempo, exhibits a heroic character at the outset, but turns lighter and more
playful in succeeding variations. The main theme returns and the subdued, lively ending are sheer
magic in its feathery nonchalance, its graceful instrumental exchanges,

Cue For Treason Essay

  • 1. Cue for Treason Essay Tia Berardi ENG 1D1 Ms.Oliver Monday April 2nd 2012 Several Characters Can Have Loyalty Not everyone possesses the quality of loyalty, but those that do are worth having a relationship with. The author of Cue for Treason, Geoffry Trease, demonstrates this trait in many of the characters. The most loyal bond in this book, which took place very early on in the novel, was Peter and Kit's. One of the most significant bonds has to be amongst the Secret Agents, the Queen, and all of England. Lastly, the most heroic form of loyalty is portrayed by Tom Boyd, Peter, and Kit. Each one of these characters do not betray each other once. So, several characters in the novel show loyalty to one another throughout. Peter and Kit are faced with the ... Again Kit ignored my advice. She argued afterward that there was no help she could hope to fetch, and in those circumstances she wasn't going to leave me" (Trease 253). This shows how much the two care for each other, and will not abandon each other when situations get rough. Although the pair fights numerous times, in the end they are always there for each other, and never betray each other's trust. But, this is not the last time loyalty was shown. The Secret Agents show loyalty to the Queen, protecting her in every way possible, therefore demonstrating loyalty to all of England as well. One of the first was a man by the name of Walsingham. Walsingham was one of the very first Secret Agents, devoting his time and life to protecting the Queen, and establishing the Secret Agent organization. Without Walsingham the Secret Agency would not be as successful, "It was Walsingham who built up a wonderful system of government spies and agents, to ferret out all the plots that were going and scotch the most before they got too dangerous" (Trease 155–6). Walsingham established the Secret Agency, which only got improved with a mission statement of protecting the Queen, thus keeping England under control. Tom Boyd may have been one of the most committed to his profession. Proving he will do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Rise Of Ludwig Van Beethoven The rise of Ludwig van Beethoven into the ranks of history 's greatest composers was paralleled by and in some ways a consequence of his own personal tragedy and despair. Beginning in the late 1790 's, the increasing buzzing and humming in his ears sent Beethoven into a panic, searching for a cure from doctor to doctor. By October 1802 he had written the Heiligenstadt Testament confessing the certainty of his growing deafness, his consequent despair, and suicidal considerations. Yet, despite the personal tragedy caused by the "infirmity in the one sense which ought to be more perfect in [him] than in others, a sense which [he] once possessed in the highest perfection, a perfection such as few in [his] profession enjoy," it also served as a motivating force in that it challenged him to try and conquer the fate that was handed him. He would not surrender to that "jealous demon, my wretched health" before proving to himself and the world the extent of his skill. Thus, faced with su!ch great impending loss, Beethoven, keeping faith in his art and ability, states in his Heiligenstadt Testament a promise of his greatness yet to be proven in the development of his heroic style. By about 1800, Beethoven was mastering the Viennese High–Classic style. Although the style had been first perfected by Mozart, Beethoven did extend it to some degree. He had unprecedently composed sonatas for the cello which in combination with the piano opened the era of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Tone In Siren Song, & The Sirens In all three works of art, the epic poem (The Odyssey), Atwood's poem ("Siren Song"), and Waterhouse's Ulysses & The Sirens, all portray the Sirens differently by the author's tone. Waterhouse uses art to set the dramatic and threatening tone while The Odyssey uses poetry to set the dramatic tone. The tone of Atwood's poem depicts the Sirens as being mischievous yet bored. First, Waterhouse uses art to portray the Sirens as dramatic and threatening by the choice of the colors used. Odysseus is dressed in white which draws the eye to him as the main focal point, while the Sirens are in all black, surrounding Odysseus and his men. The contrast in color depicts Odysseus as to be heroic while draped in white, while the Sirens appear to be dark and threatening. The Sirens hovering around the boat and trying to grasp the sailors attention, also makes this piece of art look more menacing. From what we know from reading Homer's Odyssey, it would appear that this is the artist's interpretation of how he saw the sirens and the sailors. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this epic poem, the tone is dramatic because of the words used to depict not only the Sirens but Odysseus and his men. The author used words like "flunged" and "harder", making the sentence more dramatic and giving us a vivid image of the scene. When the author described the Sirens, he used words like "ravishing" and "thrilling". When mentioning the song, the tone changed from dramatic to condescending. The tone changed to condescending because in the song, the Sirens are praising Odysseus and saying "famous Odysseus – Archaea's pride and glory –". This makes the tone seem condescending because they are only trying to bring Odysseus to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Ludwig Van Beethoven's Life Of Ludwig Van Beethoven Ludwig van Beethoven was a German pianist and composer who is widely considered to be the greatest of all time, whose compositions consisted combinations of vocals and a vast amount of instruments. Beethoven was born in Bonn,Germany in 1770. He was a crucial figure in the world of music connecting the Classical and Romantic ages of Western Music. The life of Beethoven was full of struggle especially because of his deafness, and most of his important works were composed during the last ten years of his life. He died at the age of 56. What I will be going over is his background and his early life. Next I will be talking about his musical training that he went under throughout his life. Lastly, I will be finishing it off about his deafness and how he had died. Johann van and Maria Magdalena Beethoven had five children of which only three survived.Beethoven was the first child to survive. The other two siblings who had also survived were Casper and Nikolaus. Later in his life these two will have one of the greatest impact on Beethoven's life. Beethoven father was a mediocre court singer even though he was more known for his alcholism. In contrast,Beethoven grandfather was Kapellmeister Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven was then subjected to brutal training by his father, who had hoiped that he would become a prodigy like Mozart. • 5. Hardy Robbins Case Study This game can be so cruel sometimes – cruel enough to throw some bitter salt in the fruity punch of a dramatic win. Tony Romo's heroics in the final quarter Sunday was his 24th game–winning, comeback drive, the most by any quarterback since the '06 season. However, the Cowboys' 27–26 thrilling W over the rival Giants was followed by some terrible news. Elite receiver Dez Bryant broke his foot, sidelining him for at least four to six weeks and possibly longer according to various reports. With Bryant out, what will offensive coordinator Scott Linehan's game plan be without Bryant's prowess in the slant game, crossing routes, his vertical game, physicality on fades in the redzone, and most importantly, drawing double coverage to single up Romo's second, third and fourth options? Linehan needed to abandon the ground game against the Giants when the Cowboys fell behind, but the running back committee (as I've been expecting) did their damage in the passing game. Dallas' trio set of runners, Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar present speed and elusiveness in the open field, and Linehan's game plan worked mightily on the underneath routes, taking advantage of the Giants' suspect linebackers. ... The music was written for amateurs because composers wanted more control rather than trusting the improviser. 5. What were the new developments in the classical orchestra? (1 point) There were four groupings: Strings (1st violins, 2d violins, violas, cellos, double basses), Woodwinds (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons), Brass (2 French horns, 2 trumpets), and Percussion (2 timpani). A Classical Orchestra has a larger number of musicians. Classical composers exploited the individual tone colors of orchestral instruments. A classical piece has greater variety–and more rapid changes–of tone color. A theme might begin in the full orchestra, shift to the strings, and then continue in the woodwinds. The strings were the most important; first violins had the melody, along with clarinet melodic solos, while the lower strings accompanied. The brass filled out the harmony, but did not play the main melody. Timpani were used for rhythmic bite and emphasis. 6. Even today, there is still a debate about what he played, most scholars believe he played the "first" piano concerto in C Major. Shortly after, he decided to publish three piano trios which were an enormous financial success. In April 2, 1800 he debuted his symphony 1 in a C major at the Royal Imperial Theater in Vienna. Later he grew to detest the piece by saying that he did not know how to compose then. After that, he started to compose piece after piece, including The Creatures of Prometheus in 1801 which was replayed over 20 times in the Royal Imperial Theater in Vienna. Near this time, Beethoven and the rest of Europe was frightened at the news of Napoleon claiming himself first consul, and later, named himself Emperor of France. Then in 1804, (a couple weeks after Napoleon named himself emperor of France) Beethoven composed symphony 3 in Napoleon's honor, which was later renamed to Eroica Symphony because he grew disillusioned of Napoleon. • 13. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 Symphony No. 6 – A Palette of Human Emotions By: Gunnar Moll Peter Illyich Tchaikovsky is one of the most famous Russian composers. He was born in Votkinsk on May 7, 1840 into a middle class family. His family greatly supported his musical interests. They gave him piano lessons and provided him with the instruction of music theory. Their move to St. Petersburg proved to be a significant milestone is Tchaikovsky's life. It had set the course for Tchaikovsky's progress and success in the musical world. From September of 1850 to May of 1859, Tchaikovsky attended the School of Jurisprudence. The general plan of Tchaikovsky's symphonies includes a very 'pessimistic' first movement, a sad, peaceful second movement, an allegro movement (often in dance form) and a fourth movement full of vigor. His 6th symphony, the Pathetique, is an exception. The themes are broad, decorative, and striking. The orchestration is rich – but without any attempt at spectacular effects. The last movement is slow and mournful, and recent research reveals the reason. The Pathetique was only partly finished when news spread of a homosexual 'encounter' Tchaikovsky had with a fellow student. Some believe that the composer finished the symphony as a farewell to life. The scoring is for the standard symphonic orchestra with winds, brass, strings, timpani, and other percussion instruments. It was premiered in St. Petersburg with Tchaikovsky himself leading the orchestra. The 1st movement is in sonata form. The slow introduction to this symphony is unusual in that it begins in the subdominant key – E minor, solemnly introduced by the bassoons. It modulates into B minor and the tempo increases for the principal subject. This theme is elaborated and developed, and a march–like motif forms a bridge passage leading to a climax. The strings then introduce an amorous, song–like second subject in D major. The development section enters with a bang. This section brings no startling thematic growth or transformation, but is ... • 14. Bilbo Heroism The Hobbit is a very adventurous tale brimming with various fantasy elements. These include, but are not limited to, magical spells, talking animals, fictitious species such as dwarves and goblins, and of course, heroic and valiant characters. While there are only a few truly heroic characters in the novel, each plays a very prominent role in the story. Over the course of the story there were three specific protagonists that deserved such a title: Gandalf, Bilbo, and Bard. I feel that these three displayed courageous, valiant personalities through their character's efforts within the story, more so than others might have. Gandalf demonstrates some of the most heroic traits of any character in the entire story. This is made evident early on when the wizard saves the dwarves and Bilbo from a band of unintelligent trolls and later from an underground civilization of goblins. In both of these situations he uses his clever instincts to outsmart his foes. For example, when the group was captured by trolls, he did an impersonation of one of them enabling the trio to argue for a very long amount of time in order to distract them. • 18. The Importance Of The Film Adaptation By William Shakespeare To act is to breath life into a story that is otherwise a corpse, filled with the paradox of potential energy. Also known as one of the most difficult crafts to master, acting is many things, but overall the skill of adapting words into a visual experience that audiences then digest and carry with them as they continue in their own lives. When a non–actor thinks about acting, one may assume it is an easy job, but the conscious psychological work (skilled) actors put forth in their performances is no easy feat, especially if they are able to come across so authentically that viewers assume acting is easy. However, acting is difficult, and even more difficult when playing a role that was adapted from a novel, as scholar Dudley Andrew asserts in his chapter "Adaptation" in James Naremore's book "Film Adaptation." He points out that because the novel has a large fan base before it is adapted, there is also a group of people waiting to scrutinize the film once made. This, in turn, grants the novel a greater sense of superiority over the adaptation, because viewers– fans of the novel– assume that the film will be worse. Although viewers have their prejudices on film adaptations, they normally attack the structure of the story, exclaiming that film did not stay faithful to the original story; only when a role is poorly cast do the scrutinizing viewers point out the acting. In some cases, however, the actor's performance is so precise that it, in itself, carries the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Biography Of Ludwig Van Beethoven 's Symphonies Ludwig van Beethoven's nine symphonies are indispensable pieces of music and contributed to him being referred to as one of the most famous musicians in all of musical history. His symphonies are still played today and are recognized around the world. He is known as a symphonic master due to his nine symphonies. Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer during the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras. Beethoven's symphonies were greatly influenced by Haydn and Mozart in the beginning, but they showed remarkable signs of his individuality and eventually transformed into his own style. His life is categorized into three periods; early period, heroic period, and later period, in which his music had distinct characteristics in each of the time periods. His symphonies were first composed in a very classical style that stemmed from his mentors, to later develop into a more romantic style with his own personal touch to finally compose the music that he wanted, without thinking about the music he thought he was supposed to compose. The early period of Beethoven's life lasted approximately six years, from 1794 to 1800. This period began directly after Beethoven met the famous composer Franz Joseph Hayden and moved to Vienna to study with him for two years. Although the lessons with Hayden were not successful due to a personality conflict, Haydn greatly influenced Beethoven's early period. This period of his life encompassed smaller musical pieces ... • 20. Ludwig Van Beethoven : Classical And Romantic Period Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist, thought to be the greatest of all time by many. He was one of the most pivotal and crucial figures of the Transitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras. He has influenced nearly every composer to come after him. Even after his hearing started to deteriorate, he continued to compose his beautiful, extraordinary masterpieces. Some of his most important works were written while he was almost completely deaf. Beethoven was born in the city of Bonn, formerly the provisional capital of West Germany. It is uncertain exactly what day Beethoven was born, but it is a fact that he was baptized December 17, 1770 making December 16 his most likely birthdate. Both his father and his grandfather were professional singers, so Beethoven grew up around music. Although his father, Johann van Beethoven was only a mediocre singer and more commonly known as an alcoholic, Beethoven's grandfather, Kapellmeister Ludwig van Beethoven, was Bonn's most prosperous, eminent musician. At a very early age, Johann van Beethoven taught Beethoven to play the clavier, a stringed keyboard instrument. Johann was a harsh instructor, and would beat young Beethoven when he hesitated or made a mistake playing. Almost every day, Johann would even beat his son, lock him in the cellar, or deprive him of his much needed sleep so he could get even more practice. Harrington's The Faithful Executioner: Life and Death, Honor and Shame in the Turbulent Sixteenth Century, is about Meister Frantz Schmidt and the role he played as an executioner and healer in Germany and the life he wanted and pursued during and afterwards. Fulfilling an inherited and unwanted roll as executioner, often considered a curse, Schmidt was determined to seek redemption through social respectability and not fall into the normal stigma of an executioner's life. "Establishing a good name among wary locals remained a lifelong endeavor for Meister Frantz." (p. 131) Armed with self–discipline and self–righteousness, he committed to this endeavor by not falling for the normal traps (public use of prostitutes and drunkenness) that usually followed the dishonorable position. Schmidt was "faithful" in his duties but also as a respectable man of society. Sixteenth century Germany was a time and place of revolution and reformation. To keep the order and punish individuals for their crimes, an executioner was required to provide justice. In addition, prosperous cities were eager to promote safeness and attract trades. In hopes of this, they adopted ordinances. When someone broke the law, and equal punishment was required and thus entered the executioner. Beethoven was firmly established as the greatest composer of his time. His piano–playing career had finished in 1808. That year he had considered leaving Vienna for a secure post in Germany, but three Viennese noblemen had banded together to provide him with a steady income and he remained there, although the plan foundered in the ensuing Napoleonic wars in which his patrons suffered and the value of Austrian money declined. The years after 1812 were relatively unproductive. He seems to have been seriously depressed, by his deafness and the resulting isolation, by the failure of his marital hopes and by anxieties over the custodianship of the son of his late brother, which involved him in legal actions. • 24. Analysis Of The Brothers K THE BROTHERS K By David James Duncan. 645 pp. New York: Doubleday. THE 19th–century Russian novel has been born again in "The Brothers K," David James Duncan's wildly excessive, flamboyantly sentimental, tear–jerking, thigh–slapping homage to Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy –– and the game of baseball. For the title isn't merely a spin on "The Brothers Karamazov," though Mr. Duncan makes frequent references to that heavy tome. "K," we are reminded, is also the baseball–scorecard symbol for striking out –– and thus, as Mr. Duncan extrapolates it, for failing, flunking, pratfalling, making a bad situation even worse. But it can have a positive side as well. "To lose your very self for the sake of another," he adds, "is . . . the only way you're ever going to save it." The strikeout kids are the brothers Chance, four boys of the baby–boom generation born to Hugh Chance, a worldly–wise and weary fastball–slinging minor–league pitcher, and Laura, Hugh's staunchly conservative Seventh–day Adventist wife. Kincaid, the novel's principal narrator; his brothers, Everett, Irwin and Peter, and their twin sisters, Beatrice and Winifred, grow up in Camas, Wash., a working–class town where Hugh supplements his meager baseball salary by working at the local paper mill. Everyone believes that Papa Chance is destined for the big leagues –– until an accident at the mill crushes the thumb on his pitching hand. Laura declares that this, like all tragedies, is God's will, and that nothing can be done to make it better. The family settles for a life of noisy desperation until a foulmouthed surgeon offers to repair the injured thumb with bones from Papa's toe. Thus Hugh Chance is reborn as his team's pitching coach and "stupid situation reliever," known, of course, as Papa Toe. For a while, the national pastime, seen on television and from rump–punishing bleachers far from the bright lights of the major leagues, becomes a complex metaphor for all that Papa Chance and his sons hold sacred. The seventh of Beethoven's nine symphonies, its premiere concert (December 1813 in Vienna) was performed at a charity concert in order to benefit the soldiers who had been wounded a few months prior in the battle of Hanau. It was performed three times in ten weeks following its premiere. During the time of the symphony's premiere, Vienna was still distressed due to being taken over by Napoleon in 1805 and 1809 and yearning for victory; the audience at the premiere seemed to have loved the energy and beauty of the piece. It involves four movements: 1. Poco sostenuto – Vivace, 2. Allegretto, 3. Presto – Assai meno presto (trio), and 4. Finale, Allegro con brio. The score includes two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, two drums (in which are tuned to A and E, except in the scherzo where they are in F and A), and basses. The first movement is in A major, with repeated modulations between C major and F major. The second movement also includes modulations (originally in A minor with switches to A major) and the third movement is in F major. The few works of the years after 1812 revived and expanded the more relaxed musical structures Beethoven had employed in the 1790s. The works of Beethoven 's last period are marked by an individuality that later composers would admire but could scarcely emulate. In the Ninth Symphony and the Missa solemnis Beethoven gave expression to an all–embracing view of idealized humanity. There was a full stage of musicians and a complete choir to back it up. The first half of the performance was a complete orchestra of woodwinds, strings, drums, brass, excreta and a four part choir. Overall the performance took no longer than thirty minutes to play the three–part Symphony of Psalms. This Symphony was much shorter than I was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mr. Fakhouri had also explained how this is one of his favorite pieces and just had to have his orchestra perfect, as they did successfully. After a minor wobble of the director stand, a few adjustments and giggles, Symphony No.1 in D major began. The first movement started off with an eerie introduction, with the first two notes morphing into a birdcall as well as main theme but a very magical sound. It made for a very soothing, romantic time. Throughout the piece I felt as if it told a story as most music does, what I came to believe it was a love story. The Allegro begins in the cello with the second Wayfarer song, "Ging heut morgen Ubers Feld," (I Walked this Morning over the Field). With a light and happy tone in the beginning as if two lovers had just met, this was the main theme of this movement. Suddenly there was a deep, heavy part maybe one of despair in paradise but that only lasted for a short period as it came to a victorious ending of happily ever after. (Kahn) The second movement Scherzo, gave more of an elegant, royal ball sound. Where the women dress in gowns and the men in tuxedos, while drinking wine and dancing the night away. This movement has the rhythm of the Landler, an Australian folk dance. It conforms to the classic minuet and trio form though Mahler takes the first section beyond the standard repeat structure. The first three notes of the Scherzo and the Trio recall the birdcall theme from the first movement. If ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In John Updike's popular short story– "A&P", the main character, Sammy may seem like he has a typical life like any other teenage boy would. Yet Updike proceeds to explain that "A&P" is not just an ordinary story. In Updike's short story, Sammy is eventually faced with the consequences of his actions and is forced to mature more than what he already anticipated being. Saldivar's article states "He needs a sympathetic listener (or reader), someone who will grasp the meaning he is constructing for himself as he puts his actions into narrative order" (Saldivar Para 2). Sammy spies three girls entering "A&P" only wearing bathing suits, he singled out one girl and referred to her as "Queenie" mostly because of her confidence and beauty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although it turns his life to unordinary, Sammy views the girls as a refreshing and escaping scene for himself. He was used to seeing the regular, ordinary customers that he referred to as sheep. Something about the girls demeanor when entering "A&P" left Sammy with a inspirational, riving feeling. Porter later in his article discusses why he thought Sammy quit his job, which ultimately made his life change. He viewed it as Sammy making a gesture as both a statement towards the girls decency and a rejection of "A&P" and the misdirected values for which the store held. The action that Sammy made was an exaggerated result from his youth. His action does not diminish from the simple goodness of his chivalric intent, nor does it take away the importance of his personal commitment. Although Sammy knows that he will feel this for the rest of his life and that he separated himself from the flock and the "A&P" crowd. Sammy chose to set himself against the majority. But Sammy also understood that he could not start something and not follow through with it whether it made his life ordinary or not. Once Sammy realized that not to follow the voice of conscience is to be false to ones own integrity and would be living a lie, he chose to live an honest and significant life instead. Our country grew from disobeying the law by starting the Revolution against Great Britain. Since then, we the people, never forgot from whence we came and will always fight for our rights as well as freedom. Civil disobedience is what keeps our congressmen on their toes. During a time where African Americans had no real freedom, the Jim Crow Laws held them back from Jefferson's quote on equality for all men. Some people may say that his reveal is simply common sense or went against our nation, labeling him a traitor. However, ""Snowden has brought to light important information that deserved to be in the public domain, while doing no lasting harm to the national security of his country."" (John Cassidy, 2013) To those who trusted other NSA officials on what they truly do, Mr. Snowden can be other source to get the truth; it's debatable on why a 29–year–old would go out of his way to lie about a vital matter. Snowden said himself that he doesn't want to live in a world where everything he does and say is reordered. His act, whether you think it was idiotic or heroic, revealed to America on what our countries intentions are for both our nation and around the world. If civil disobedience is abused, then our liberty and freedom of a nation are attacked. We mustn't take our rebellion to the extreme of doing more harm than planned. Mrs. Parks, Mr. Ali, and Mr. Snowden's acts were peaceful and got their message across, positively impacting our soiecty. And in the end, the trio ended violence, hatred, and confusion in our country; every action against the law must be carefully thought out or it can cause an outbreak of injustice to our ... • 32. Why Forrest Gump Is Very Much An Epic An Epic is defined as a long poem, typically derivative of ancient traditionally orally related tales that narrated the feats and adventures of heroic or often legendary figures, or the gallant history of a nation. I believe Forrest Gump is very much an epic. When a story transcends multiple lifetimes and incorporates many events across generational lines, it may be then considered epic. Forrest Gump, a tale about a man of slight mind but significant heart who originates from deficiency to become an American Hero leading one simple life leading to an adventure after another. The characterizations in the film and the original book by author Winston Groom will need to be explored to fully extrapolate on what make Forrest Gump an epic in its own right. These two manifestations have noticeably different characterizations of the title character and minor characters along with additional events, or changes to the timeline. Many of the events in the story are comparable to happenings in other epic tales as well such as Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey and to a lesser extent in its precursor Homer's The Iliad. Odysseus's journey and the epic adventure that was Forrest Gump's life are quite reminiscent of each other. • 33. Paul Revere's Ride On the eve of the Revolutionary war, April 18th, 1775, a well–known man, Paul Revere, rode through every Middlesex village and farm to warn the colonists of a rumoured British march towards Concord, in which they were going to seize ammunition. This warning resulted in militia waking up and grabbing weapons to fend off the British and help lead to a famous victory. Many people refer this heroic action as the midnight ride of Paul Revere, but Revere was not the only heroic man on that historical night according to "The Other Riders." There were two other riders: Samuel Prescott and William Dawes. They both played very important roles in alerting Boston of the impending attacks that were about to take place. The poem, Paul Revere's Ride, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow shows a clear bias statement towards Paul Revere. Longfellow states "..he came to the bridge in Concord town." However, in "The Other Riders" it says, "...Dawes and Revere set out for Concord together, joined by Dr. Samuel Prescott" and "It was Prescott who warned the town of Concord..." According to the article, as I stated before, "It was Prescott who warned the town of Concord of the impending British march." This is important because the Redcoats were planning on seizing the colonists ammunition in Concord, that is a really big deal. If it weren't for him, who knows if Paul could have made all of the stops and reach Concord in time. Over the years many people have wondered and questioned why only Revere was mentioned and honored for his heroism. The text in "The Other Riders" states, "But why should my name be quite forgot, Who rode as boldly and well..." This is significant because it demonstrates how the other messengers did just as much as Paul Revere and that they deserve equal recognition for what they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Heroic Man Versus The Flawed Gods Essay Heroic Man Versus the Flawed Gods in Homer's Odyssey Homer's Odyssey is one of the great epic poems of Western literature and explores a variety of profound themes. Critical among these themes is man's relationship with the gods and how this relationship frames his path through life in pursuit of ancient Greek heroic ideals. This report introduces and explains these ideals and then explores how Odysseus's adventures throughout the Odyssey fit with them. It will be demonstrated that although Odysseus, like all heroes, strives for a good measure of self–determination and independence from the gods, and the varied episodes in which he finds himself have close parallels with the gods' own experiences as documented throughout the broader canon of classic Greek mythology. The Greek hero pursues a wide array of objectives throughout his life. These objectives include glory (kleos), prestige (aristeia), and independent merit (arete) in the face of fate. (HEROIC CODE). By striving for these objectives, the hero seeks to establish his independence from the gods. What must be recognized from the outset is that this is in actuality a lost cause. It is the gods who created man. Technically, the titan Prometheus, and man is ultimately destined to fail; only in the grave does he find final resolution of peace. The creation of man parallels the creation of the gods, which explains the nature of his underlying struggle. Recall that Zeus, the king of the gods, only acceded to his throne by ... • 39. The Greatest Composer Ever By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Fur Elise, Moonlight Sonata, Emperor Concerto, Pathetique and Violin Concerto all share a common trait. If you said Ludwig van Beethoven, you would be correct. One of the greatest composer ever, only to be rivaled by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He happened to be deaf when he created many of his famous works. Today, I am going to tell you about his childhood, early life, then to his later stages in life where he was deaf. But it was when he became deaf, he produced his greatest works of music. Ludwig was baptized on December 17, 1770 in Bonn Germany. Many believe that he was actually born on the 16th, as babies during his time were baptized within 24 hours. Out of the seven children that his parents had, only three sons survived. Ludwig being the eldest of the three. His first teacher was his father, who was a singer in Court at Bonn. He noticed early on that Ludwig had an incredible musical talent. He saw him as the next Mozart. His father, Johann van Beethoven would practice with Beethoven day and night. There have been records from neighbors that say they saw Johann beat Ludwig when he missed a note, or hesitated (Bio, 2016). His father was very cruel to him, and a very much so an alcoholic. Ludwig was so talented that his father forced him to perform at the age of seven. Though he when he show was being advertised, it was called the "little son of six years" (which was the age that Mozart first performed in front of Empress Maria Theresia). The Finale, designated in March tempo, exhibits a heroic character at the outset, but turns lighter and more playful in succeeding variations.
