Essay on Killing Chickens
Killing Chickens
Betrayal and loneliness are two of the hardest emotions to encounter in life. Nevertheless, at some point everyone will experience and be forced to
deal with them. This is made even harder when they are caused by someone you love and trust. In Meredith Hall's "Killing Chickens", she uses
various literary devices such as metaphor, simile, and imagery as she processes her husband's affair and describes having to kill chickens. Hall's
literary nonfiction is based on the happenings of a specific day that was truly hard to handle after being deceived by ones she loved:
I was killing chickens. It was my 38th birthday. My brother had chosen that morning to tell me that he had caught his wife – my best friend, Ashley – in

'Better hide my surprise.'" Just as Hall identifies the chickens and her children, she explains, "I turned her on her floppy neck again and again.
Corkscrewing her breathing tube, struggling to end the gasping." Just as Hall is making many attempts to kill the chicken, she is unable to do it
until it finally gives in. This is the same way her husband has been treating her for the past ten years with all the rumors and suspicions until
finally she reached a breaking point. The author uses a number of different literary devices to describe the hardship she feels such as metaphor,
simile, and imagery. The author revels that her life and the chickens are not very different. "I felt her body break deep inside my own chest" (6).
The way the chicken has to be killed after being loved for so long is the same way Hall feels about being with her husband for so long and then
having him cheat on her and leave her. "Guilt and fear tugged me like an undertow" (7). The chickens are being killed by the one that loved them
and in the same way; Hall is killed by the one she loved: her husband. The author uses a numerous number of vivid imagery to describe the struggle
she is going through with her husband leaving and her having to kill the chickens. "Her shiny black beak opened and closed, opened and closed" (5).
The rumors and suspicions that the author's husband was cheating on her would come and go, until it reached a breaking point

Theme Of A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings
It says,"..but the poor fellow is so old that the rain knocked him down," ( Marquez 363). This phrase is critical to the theme of the story as it
provides the readers information on the Angel and allows them to understand he was frail and week. This also gives the people who found him a
gateway to a larger domain of opportunities to obtain money. In the short story, "A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings." Gabriel Marquez,
develops the character of the Angel through the use of symbols, character, and plot to demonstrate encounters with those who are weak and how the
Angel overcomes adversity through courage and strength. First the author uses symbols to help describe the Angel and portray how weak the angel
actually is. The Angel's wings symbolize strength and power. While the Angel is in the cage his wings are beat up and he is weak, but over time his
wings begin to heal and he becomes more powerful. It says, "... and at the beginning of December some large, stiff feathers began to grow on his
wings," (367). This line demonstrates the power the Angel is obtaining and soon after he... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Angel is spending the majority of the story with the chickens in the chicken coop. He has no room to move or stretch. This signifies how Pelayo
and his wife doesnt have a second thought on the comfort or for the feelings of the Angel. The Angel is found laying in the mud at the begining with
dilapidated wings. It says, "He spent his time trying to get comfortable in his borrowed nest, befuddled by the hellish heat of the oil lamps and
sacramental candles that had been placed along the wire," (365). The author uses all of this to help the reader understand how low the Angel is
mentally and how hard it's going to be to overcome the adversity the Angel is facing, rather than letting the conditions of his surrounding overcome

Dog Monologue
SCARS On my left hand, just slightly above my wrist, runs a long scar that goes over my BCG vaccine mark. Every time I look at it, I am
reminded of how silly it was for me to try and restrain Popeye, our dog, from attacking an innocent chicken that was turned into one of my mom's
favorite chicken stew delicacies not long after the incident. Nonetheless, the ride against the Kei apple fence was worth it as I believe no innocent
chicken soul should be allowed to die in the jaws of an angry dog. Just below the wrist lies another scar courtesy of Puscat, our runaway cat. After long
deliberation, we – my elder brother and I – had decided to rid Puscat of ticks that she had picked on her unsanctioned travels in a bid to prevent her

Analysis of "A Savage Life" Essay
Through the use of anecdotes in the article "A Savage Life", Suzanne Winckler effectively points out that it is important to understand where your food
comes from. Winckler helps convey to readers that while butchering animals is no fun, it is necessary for the survival of omnivores. She argues that
meat–eaters are out of touch with reality; instead of recognizing that an animal must be sacrificed for their meal, most consumers mindlessly devour the
food on their plates – without a thought of where their food came from. Winckler states "I am too far gone in my rational Western head to appropriate
the ritual of cultures for whom the bloody business of hunting was a matter of survival" (634); in this statement she adequately appeals to logos ... Show

Through this proclamation, Winckler successfully appeals to pathos because she makes it simple for the audience to see the connection between a
newborn and a chicken about to lose its life. Both chickens and newborns are ignorant to the world and rather helpless – comparing a human to the
food that one eats helps to put the killing of a chicken into perspective. Winckler then gruesomely explains what it is like to behead a chicken;
appealing to both pathos and ethos: "Headless chickens don't run around. They thrash with such force and seeming coordination that they sometimes
turn back flips" (633). By using imagery to describe this horrific requirement for killing a chicken, Winckler is seen as a credible and factual source.
After slaying her first chicken, Winckler "realized why cultures, ancient and contemporary, develop elaborate rituals for coping with the grisly
experience of killing any sentient creature" (633). She appeals to logos in this quote by informing readers of the epiphany she came to – taking them
through her mind's thought process; this makes her come across as a logical being, not a demented human. By appealing to logos in this quote,
Winckler invokes thought in readers' minds; she productively addresses that killing animals is disturbing and off–putting but necessary for survival,
since most nations perform rituals

Persuasive Speech On Zaxbys
Zaxbys: Better Than Chick fil A
Ana Woodsides
Persuasive Speech
If you are from the south, you have probably heard of the fast food chain Zaxby's. With more than 660 locations[bandwagon, logos], the company is
worth billions, all made possible by two young entrepreneurs, Zach McLeroy and Tony Townley. The two have been best friends since fifth grade,
where they decided that there was a need for better chicken. Later, McLeroy sold his drum set– giving up his rockstar career to start the chicken joint–
which now boasts a annual revenue of about 1.7 billion. [anecdote, pathos]
Chick fil a, the fast food restaurant commonly compared to Zaxbys, is very biased when it comes to controversial issues such as gay rights.[creating a
problem– ethos] For one, they have supported many anti–gay organizations that are proven to be harmful to people. As for 'treatment' these
organizations use, it has been said "that (the) damage they inflict on individuals can be deep and lasting" (Condon, NBC News). One individual,
Samuel Brinton, described the methods used in conversion therapy as "mental torture." Even with two years of therapy, he is still not "cured" and now
needs constant mental support as he often struggles with severe depression. Chick fil A continues to support these conversion organizations even
though the American Psychological Association (APA), released a study in 2008 that stated "Homosexuality is not a mental disorder, and thus is not
something that needs to or can be

Fast Food Nation Thesis
After reading chapter six of Fast Food Nation it has really opened my eyes as to how these fast food restaurants are not only having a large impact on
humans but the treatment of chickens as well. While everyone knows that they kill animals in order to provide humans with meat not everyone knows
how these animals are treated during the process. Though the invention of the chicken nugget was a new and better option for people it only provided
worse treatment of these birds and caused lazier bird "farmers". Before "most Chicken was sold whole; today about 90 percent of chicken sold in the
United States has been cut into pieces, cutlets, or nuggets,"(Schlosser 140). Although I am not a vegetarian hearing that makes me sick to my stomach.

Persuasive Essay On Animal Testing
It is hard to imagine a life without the childhood trips to the zoo, the circus, and other animal based attractions. It is even harder to imagine a daily
life without digging in to a hamburger and washing it down with a cold glass of milk. It is almost impossible to imagine a life where one does
nothing wrong, but it subject to abuse and torture for selfish purposes of another species. Animal exploitation is a common yet overlooked practice all
around the world. Helpless animals are poked, prodded, and slaughtered without acknowledgement due to the satisfaction it brings to the human race.
However, if it was known what happens behind the scenes of the making of your dinner or the production of your favorite show at SeaWorld, the lives
of tortured animals could change forever.
Domestic breeding is a commonly overlooked method of exploitation. Common in breeding and pet store chains, domestic breeding is defined by the
ASPCA as "a large–scale commercial dog breeding operation that places profit over the well–being of its dogs–who are often severely neglected–and
acts without regard to responsible breeding practices." Animals who are bred in mills are bred solely for profit; they are not appropriately cared for
or provided with the proper living conditions. They live in these conditions for weeks to months before being sold or shipped off to a store. Often,
theses animals are ridden with diseases and disorders due to inbreeding and unsanitary surroundings. Entertainment is a

Nickel and Dimed: on (Not) getting by in America reveals low wage America in all its tenacity, anxiety, and surprising generosity

political activist emphasizes on the poverty of millions of low wage Americans as a state of emergency. She stated that majority of American
workers, about 60 percent; earn less than $14 an hour. To find out, how people survive on six to seven dollar an hour, Barbara moved from Florida to

Later in Maine, she stayed at Motel 6 for $120 rent per week. The room was only equipped with limited kitchen equipment like frying pan, a plate
,a small bowl, a coffee maker and one large drinking glass which left her with only one option of frying. Due to not having large cooking pot, pot
holders, or a ladle to stir with (which cost about $30 at Kmart) she managed to cook her lunch with a slow burning, high protein combo of frozen
chicken patties with melted cheese on top and canned pinto beans on the side. Her dinner was at workplace, where they offered their employees a
choice of fish sandwich, or hamburger for only $2. In Minnesota, she rented a room without kitchen hence she managed to have her meals at low price
(i.e. Chinese buffet or Kentucky fried chicken). Mostly due to limited cooking equipment, very low budget and insufficient time, Ms. Ehrenreich found
it difficult to make healthy food choices. Also healthy food choices are generally expensive.
According to the survey conducted by the U.S conference of Mayors, 67% of adults requesting emergency food aids are people with jobs. Recently,
American food banks are experiencing a "torrent of need which they cannot meet". In Maine, Ms Ehrenreich needed immediate food aid or cash

The Importance Of Eating Preferences In Children
Possibly, your kids know that they can leverage your desire to get them to eat with their own preferences. If they can refuse until they get chicken
nuggets, or can eat in front of the television, why change?
We've all done what we've had to do in order to get through a meal. That said, we might make some leeway by instituting aneating schedule. In
addition, we can make sure that meals are eaten together at the table.
We all go off–plan sometimes. But try to be less forgiving about when and where food is served in your house.

That doesn't differ from what adult women who want to drop a dress size may eat! Healthy brain, bone, and muscle development are crucial at this
time, so a near–adult amount of calories makes sense.
Not to mention, they need to eat for the energy typical of toddlers.
Without it, listlessness and fatigue will occur, stunting their development. Other symptoms of nutritional deficiency may include crankiness, speech
delays, and more frequent illnesses.
And what of those nutritional shakes that promise to help our kids get precious vitamins and calories? They definitely work, but they're full of
less–than–desirable ingredients. For example, one popular brand specifically marketed to kids includes the following:
Added sugar – Not natural sugar, like from fruit; just more of the white stuff.
Maltodextrin – A thickener and preservative that can cause sugar spikes and impact healthy gut bacteria.
Carrageenan – Another thickener/stabilizer which may be bad for digestion.
Artificial flavoring – Addictive, lab–created chemicals.
Monoglycerides – Synthetic hydrogenated fat.
And that's just for starters – the ingredients list on these "nutrition shakes" is a mile long! In addition to providing calories and (synthetic) vitamins,
they're big on sugar and preservatives.
In a way, it's quite counterproductive. We do our best to avoid or limit candy and soda, so they don't get hooked on it

Food Inc : Rhetorical Analysis Of Food, Inc.
Food, Inc. : Rhetorical Analysis
In the prestigious documentary film, Food Inc., produced by Robert Kenner and founded upon an Eric Schlosser's book, Fast Food Nation, Mr. Kenner
has an intriguing impact on the American consumers of many food products and industries. Throughout the film, viewers and everyday consumers of
these various products, visualize what takes place behind the scenes in food factories, contrary to what they may see through forms of advertisement.
The documentary generates an image of an "Agrarian America" in a naturalistic way to convey the message of what food production truly consists of.
The film uses ethos, pathos, and logos as rhetorical devices to enhance the horrendousness of food production to its audience in multiple ways. Food
Inc. provides not only a visual effect on the audience's emotion to portray its message, but uses a variety of commentary scenes from several experts
and members within the food industry.
The film begins with an introduction scenery of acres and large amounts of crops (corn and wheat), along with cattle and other forms of animals used
in the production of the meat industry. During the agricultural featured scene, Mr. Schlosser elucidated how food preferences and the way we eat is
evolving at a rapid speed, while others still perceive the food industry as an agrarian corporation. The film then makes its emotional appeal towards
the audience by providing images and videos of chickens in multiple repulsive situations. The chickens were thrown onto conveyor belts by primarily
African American workers, which now accounts for a fine percentage of employees in the food industry. Schlosser elaborates on the unseen dilemma
of animal and worker abuse in these corporations. He then exemplifies his realization of how the abuse is enacted in numerous ways, one of which is
implementing restrictions as to what workers are allowed to do and say. They use these restrictions as a way of controlling their workers and providers
in such industries, because the workers/providers can't risk losing the income they receive from these multi–billionaire companies. The above said
scenes justifies how Schlosser uses emotional appeals to the viewers in order to enhance the initial

Selective breeding is the result of human manipulation of genetic transfer. It uses the same principle as natural selection. However, natural selection is
the process of selection by the environment whereas;selective breeding is a form artificial selection by humans. Hence, selective breeding can be
defined as the artificial process by which desirable or specific traits are selected to produce ideal breed of animals.
This process of artificial selection is nothing recent as agriculture began thousands of years ago. Selective breeding however did commence with
selection of plants containingdesired traits with the purpose of producing bigger and easier to harvest grains with a greater yield.
As the decades progressed, technology became widespread and selective breeding started producing animals for meat, milk, clothes, eggs and several
other human desires. Due to selective breeding, a smaller number of animals were required yet they produced a large amounts and better quality
products. This was possible as the animals were being genetically manipulatedso that they contained desired traits.
Similar is the case of birds especially chickens and turkeys whose are meat widely popular in a range of cuisines. There are two different types of

Short Story : Cinderell The Story Of Cinderella
The evil step–vultures laughed as Cindahen fell down the stars carrying a big bag of soot, they all laughed harder as one of the vultures kicked the
soot into her beautiful honey–gold feathers. The soot reduced Cindahen's beautiful golden feathers to a grey smudge and made her beautiful iridescent
outline, dull and dirty.
"Go clean our phones. NOW," demanded one the vulture in a tone that tried to relay self–importance but failed miserably. Cinderella barely concealed a
sigh, the vulture's eye's narrowed and took a step towards her and raised a wing to strike her and the doorbell rang.
The step–vultures desperately tried to fix their ugly feathers and the door opened. A messenger chicken at the door paused, taking in the scene, seeing
Cinderella covered in soot and the vultures attempting to fix their ugly, oily feathers. The chicken blanched and dropped an E–book on the floor and
ran away retching. The vultures briefly frowned, then crowded around the note and let at squawks of excitement and yelped in excitement.
"WE GOT TO MEET THE PRINCE CHICKEN," shouted one of the vultures.
"AND MAYBE MARRY HIM," yelped another. They all swooned. They all crowded together and ran to their room to see what dresses to wear and
what feather cream to use. Cindahen glanced at the picture on the E–book and frowned and wondered why they were making such a big deal of it.
Cindahen muttered to herself 'Not even worth being a rooster, needs to be more glamorous. And more tech–savvy as she saw the ancient phone in his
hand and broken equipment in the background.
One of the vultures came back into the room and growled. The vulture smacked Cindahen so hard she collapsed onto the ground and the vulture
screamed right into her ear, "CLEAN OUR PHONES." Cindahen's eyes watered and shock her head. That small act of defiance infuriated the vulture. It
screamed in anger and attacked her, ripping her feathers and smacking her. The other vultures heard Cindahen's screams and came into the room to
berate her but saw her being attacked. Their eyes widened and joined the attack of Cindahen. Cindahen vision faded and went unconscious under the
onslaught.
Cindahen woke, and groaned. Everything hurt, and her vision swam in and out of focus.

In America, fast food chains are a significant symbol of the American traditional food trends which expand widely and grow fast all over the world.
Thus, a large number of Americans eat fast food as their daily diet. However, these tasty fast foods are highly processed foods which are filled with
plenty of chemicals, additives and preservatives. By adding these additives and artificial flavorings into fast foods, so the food is attractive and also

Second, "the most alarming ingredient in a Chicken McNugget is TBHQ, which is an anti–oxidant derived from petroleum that is either sprayed
directly on the nugget for keeping its shelf time longer." (Pollan P113) Moreover, TBHQ helps the food to "maintain its freshness, minimize
nutritional losses in edible oils, and preserve the present color of iron and metal complexes". (Shree Additives) Obviously, the effective functions of
TBHQ makes fast food industry often use this artificial additive in thousand food products. Chicken McNuggets are just one of the fast foods that
contain TBHQ. The result from consuming processing foods with TBHQ can lightly cause "nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of
suffocation, and collapse." (Pollan P114) It can even lead to death if you ingest too much fast food with TBHQ.
Last but not least, McNuggets also contain bleaching wheat flour which is one of the ingredients often used in McNugget and other productions. As we
know, flour is used to improve the gluten baking quality. The food industry adds flour bleaching agent in order to make the product appear whiter and
fresher. Also, the function of this agent is to maintain the foods' stability, food color and improve the structure forming capacity, allowing the product

Capitol Hill Quackery : Congress Attacks Poultry Farmers
We have all wondered where, and how the poultry that is in our grocery stores had gotten there at some point in time, whether if we eat meat or not.
When we find out, we are not too ecstatic with the results. It is unbelievable what they do just in order to get profit from the many variations of
chicken the companies produce. They treat the birds as if they are not a living, breathing animal sitting right in front of them. They have no sympathy,
for this wonderful creation, and all that it has to offer us. The companies only care about the money, and will do anything to get it. Big chicken
industries such as Tyson and Perdue, force farmers to raise their chickens in certain ways, and by doing this, the chickens are raised in unhealthy
conditions, which puts consumers' health at risk. Capitol Hill Quackery: Congress Attacks Poultry Growers (again), the House of Appropriations
Committee, which is tasked with authorizing the budget for our federal government, decided to push a sneaky "rider" into the budget process that
would block the USDA from issuing protections for poultry growers under contract with large companies like Tyson, Perdue and Pilgrim's Pride
(Harive). Most poultry growers are forced to take on massive amounts of debt to secure their contracts with these companies (Harvie). Contract Poultry

Advertisement Of A Mcdonald 's Advertisement
We see advertisements and commercials all the time in our daily lives. Sometimes, though, more often than not, we over look things that might be

that are hidden in the advertisements message, or we are paying attention to the tricks that are being used to draw us in, McDonalds knows how to
make an effective ad.
At the beginning of the McDonald's ad we see the front yard of a little girl's house as her mother does yard work in the background. As the little
girl sits on the sidewalk steps, we find that she has a grey cloud hovering over her head. We hear a piano jingle from the beginning of the commercial
as it zooms in to show the glum look on her face when she looks up at the cloud. Trying to scoot out from underneath the cloud she realizes it doesn't
work because the cloud follows her. Even blowing at it doesn't work. Instantly Ronald McDonald walks up and says, "hi there (McDonalds)." Her face
lights up just long enough to say hi back. He looks at the cloud and kneels down to her level. He mentions her day is going bad and with a sad look
she replies, "I'll say (McDonalds)." After he tells her it could be worse, the cloud begins to rain on her. With sarcasm she then says, "Awesome

The Factors Influencing Human Behaviour Outside Of Other...
Animals are one of the top factors influencing human behavior outside of other non–human animals. The interactions that occur between people and
non–human animals, particularly in the Appalachian region, has led to profound changes both on the local community. The most significant interaction
to take place and has influenced the area drastically is domestication. Four types of domestication at the forefront of Appalachian culture are livestock,
blood–sports, pet keeping, and animal's prevalence in oral folklore. The introduction of domestication previous to and after the Neolithic Revolution
has harbored new relationships between humans and animals that have altered the mountain face, culture, and economy of the Appalachian region.
The most prevalent human–animal interaction to be observed and widely practiced in the Appalachian Mountains is the keeping of domesticated
animals. The region was widely used as hunting and gathering land previous to colonial expansion. Animals were not domesticated by Native
Americans their animism, or the belief that all organisms and inanimate objects possess a soul ("Constructing Animals"). However, it was not until the
Neolithic Revolution reached the Appalachians that sustainable agriculture became a standard way to obtain food. In doing so domesticated animals,
particularly livestock, became common in the mountains. Hogs cattle, and chickens were kept on farms to allow for easier access to meat, dairy, and
eggs. Consequently, when people

Persuasive Essay : Should Factory Farming Be Banned?
Persuasive Essay on should factory farming be allowed
Industrialization is playing a critical role in the American economy revolution. Massive production bridges the demand gap through provisions in the
scarce resources. On the other hand, at what critical point the factory farming crosses the line of expectations. Factory farms dominate U.S. food
production, employing abusive practices that maximize agribusiness profits at the expense of the environment, our communities, animal welfare, and
even our health. The primary focus of these factories is to generate as much profit margins as possible. Also, they result in the massive killing of
livestock on an assembly line systematically. Althoughfactory farming is a massive production with limited time space, lower cost and increase in the
income, and genetically engineered and restricts from natural engagement but people fall sick because of the need to eat at the end of the day. I
believe factory farming is cruel and should be banned.
Factory farming gained momentum in 1926 and focused mainly on chicken rearing. The farming method did not follow any design, but the results
were evident. Lyson, (2012) says that through the winter back in Peninsula, a confinement of 450 chickens in one of the farmer's stores increased
massively to an account of 250,000 in 10 years. This act is where fast food farming and genetic freaks, borrows the idea of factory farming Pluhar,

came from the milk of cows that were tortured by milking machines and were put on medication to produce excess milk beyond their natural
abilities. Milk is a byproduct of medicine. The cows become intoxicated with medicine just to produce enough milk to fill supermarkets so you
can give it to your children. Is that what you really want? To fill your children with the milk made for a calf? Did you ever think of her as a mother
who wishes to solely raise her calf? However, she is forced to live a life slave to man and his desire to consume cow milk. Perhaps the chicken is
more near and dear to your heart. The dead chicken fetus that will not have the ability to breathe for the first time. And her poor mother who will
stay all her life in a chicken coop trapped in a lightless room until the end of her days. Did you ever think of her? According to the USDA
"Producers must demonstrate to the Agency that the poultry has been allowed access to the outside" (FSIS). This astonishing fact does not specify
any quantity of time that a chicken would be allowed outside. Technically, a farmer can get a "free range" label if he has a door for the chickens to
go out of. Because of the vague wording the USDA provided, farmers avoid letting their chickens out, but still put "free range" because their chickens
have "access" to the outside world. Hens produce one egg a day

Scene Analysis of Chicken Run Essay
Scene Analysis of Chicken Run
This essay will analyse three key scenes from the film Chicken Run. It will look at the characters that are good and bad. In particular Ginger, the
chicken who has the idea to escape from the chicken farm on which they stay, and Mrs. Tweedy the owner of the chicken farm.
After many failed escape attempts the chickens are low on morale until a flying rooster from the circus come to their rescue. But not everything runs
smoothly and rocky the rooster can be suspected of fowl play.
The first scene I am analysing is at the beginning where Ginger is escaping through a hole under the fence. We only see Ginger as a silhouette until
we see a close up of a big orange ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also Mrs. Tweedy has a very sniggering tone of voice that just adds to the evil and sinister character being quickly built up in the space of five seconds.
The use of dark and shadows in the scene really helps us with the idea of who is good and who is bad. In this scene the lighting is particularly harsh as
Mrs. Tweedy is backlit in an unfriendly and somewhat disturbing manor. Her face is in shadow that gives off a very negative vibe to her as a person.
The costume in this scene is very simple; Ginger simply wears a green knitted hat possibly, knitted by Babs. Where as Mrs. Tweedy's clothing is quite
contradictive as she is dressed in a pink dressing gown and a pink frilly nightdress. Her face is in shadow so she looks garish and very cold hearted.
In this first scene we are quickly led to the assumption that Mrs. Tweedy is the boss and the chickens are small and unimportant. We get a good guide
as to who is a good character and who is a bad character.
I n the second scene I am analysing is where Mrs. Tweedy is patrolling up and down the lines of chickens who are stood arranged in whet can only be
described as military style rows.
Many are stood quaking on the spot scared 'witless'. The different styles of cinematography in this key scene really help the audience to see the

The Current State Of America's Meat Industry
Key to the current state of America's meat industry, according to Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma, is the fact that it is primarily
hidden from the consumer. The consumer, as well as corporations, have chosen to build walls instead of demanding transparency. The general public
and journalists are not permitted to enter abattoirs of many corporations, leaving the judgement of how animals should be slaughtered to the businesses
themselves. State and federal regulations are not often put into practice as they should be, enabling the corporation to decide what is 'humane' and what
is not. Handing this judgement to a profit organisation enables the corporation to find the most efficient and most lucrative system, ignoring... Show

Pollan argues that transparency in the meat industry would hold businesses accountable to regulations and to the desires of the consumer as well as
preventing the abuse of our natural resources. Pollan's statement in Omnivore's Dilemma, 'No other country raises and slaughters its food animals
quite as intensively or as brutally as we do', is not a claim to fame for the USA. Many Americans would not necessarily agree with this statement
because they are ignorant of the system, they have chosen not to see what really happens to the animals they eat every day. Corporations have been
permitted to pursue profit irrespective of the cost. Pollan explores the issue by discovering what he would consider the wrong ways as well as the
right ways to slaughter animals for their meat. In his effort to find the right way, when working on Polyface farm, Pollan dreaded being a part of
processing the chickens. Yet, he knew that because he ate meat, he needed an education in the reality of killing animals. He could not go on as a meat
eater if he was not willing to be fully acquainted with what having meat on a dinner plate entails. By killing a chicken and coming to terms with how
that made him feel, he could develop a personal insight into the ethics of eating animals. Pollan intended to continue eating meat but he could not
ignore his own ethical quandary when faced with throwing the chicken guts into the compost. He

When the chef put the mixture of rice, vegetable, and chicken on the hot grill I could hear the sizzle from when it hit the grill. The chief got an egg
and bounced it on his spatula like it was a bouncy ball then finally he cracked the egg. The egg spilled out its bright yellow yolk. When he was done

The Fast Food Industry Essays
The dagger of the people is always twisting and changing the fast food world. Fast food itself has always been changing due to social, economic, and
health concerns. To begin I will cover the origins of fast food, followed by a brief discussion about McDonalds as well as Burger King. This will be
accompanied by a brief discussion on Taco Bell, with our final subject covering healthier fast food options. The origins of the fast food "death
machine": The machines gears were forged by the company known as Horn and Hardarts, based on the needs of the American populace in the year of
1902 to provide quick and cheap service and food to the hungry masses who craved the sustenance with hunger untold in the land of New York. The

In addition to the actual state of the restaurant the figure head of a fast food industry must also capture the minds of potential consumer via a
seemingly moronic yet intelligent and sentient being. A perfect example of this would be the clown fromMcDonald's, his bizarre and inhuman looks
capturing the visual attention of the consumer while the mild–mannered psychotic behavior both tantalizes us and fills us with fear of the consequences
of not consuming the double cheese burger. Another prime example would be the burger king (view a commercial with the king and all of this will
make perfect sense) and his disturbing imagery and behavior, simply appearing at your bed side offering "flame broiled" delights always with a
exceedingly morbid and paralyzing smile suggesting that the burgers are poisoned and that one will die as a result of eating them (of course the
commercial never shows the fate of the kings victim). In retrospect while it may appear that the gimmicks themselves do not actually draw the
consumer in the imagery mixed with their events taking place seem to have captured and reeled in the consumers mind and thus achieved the
companies' goal. The economic way is the only way: since the beginning of the fast food industry there has always been one simplistic train of
thought, "yes its good but how do we make money

How to Prepare Moistened Chicken
How to Make the Moistest Chicken Chicken is my most favorite item to cook. Any piece dark or white meat puts a smile on my face and belly.
The difference in the way one cooks chicken, makes it taste amazing or just alright. My family usually bakes chicken, but on special occasions we
have fried chicken. This paper will give clear and concise instructions on how to make the perfect baked whole chicken. The first step in making
whole chicken is the necessary ingredients. Go to the grocery store and purchase the biggest whole chicken in the store because it will definitely
shrink. A small whole chicken may look very cute, but it will not be enough to feed 4 people. A technique that my family uses to make whole
chicken is brining. To make the brine spicy, the following items need to be bought if not at home; cinnamon, cardamom, black peppercorns, dried
red peppers, vegetable, chicken stock, and a bag of ice to give the chicken a great flavor. After the ingredients are picked up from the grocery store,
there needs to be a place in the kitchen where you can lay all the items bought from the store so they are easily visible. Pull out all the items from
the grocery bags and lay them on an open spot. Place the chicken on a cookie sheet so it can be in room temperature if the chicken is frozen. Before
the chicken is actually baked, the brine needs to be made. Grab a large pot which is available in the kitchen. Pour in half of the vegetable and chicken
stock into the pan. Also, add

Essay On Mcdonalds
Historically, McDonalds focused on intensely expanding to emerging markets. The success of this was centered around the company's business model,
being franchising. Today McDonald's serves more than 69 million clients worldwide regularly and is present in 118 countries. Through this
international presence in both developed and developing countries, the company aims to relieve some of the competitive pressures faced in the
aggressive United States market. However, this diversification in no means shows a fundamental shift of its intention to be a pioneer in the developed
countries it is present in. The company is also trying to cement its position as a market leader through aggressive advertisements, restructuring the

Pros And Cons Of Caging Hens
Caging hens is unacceptable and a barbaric way of keeping animals. In New Zealand, 80% of hens are currently suffering in battery cages, living
an unnatural lifestyle. This inhumane way of farming has to stop as it's detrimental to the rights of hens and all animals to live and be treated
without cruelty and I believe it is simply unjust. Not only are these defenseless Hens killed, they are also denied the right to move and walk, are
arguably tortured and will never spread their wings. The ban of battery cages needs to take a stronger stance as the phasing out of battery cages by
2022 serves only to make way for colony cages which are just as cruel. Colony cages fail to meet the welfare of Hens and don't provide them with the
sufficient space they need. They're illegal... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe that the cost is well worth it because the welfare of animals is very important. The raise in egg and poultry prices will have an impact on
families all over New Zealand unless the government subsidises the abolishment of battery farming and colony cages. If the government continues
to keep the prices the same as they are now while making NZ farms free range it will be a win/win situations for both the welfare of animals and
humans. The change in egg prices may not be as drastic for Kiwi families as I have found there is just a mere $0.24 difference between a single
size 7 factory farmed egg and free range eggs at countdown. Is a couple of dollars per dozen eggs really worth the exploitation of hens? Caged eggs
may be cheaper but it comes at the expense of Animal welfare. New Zealand needs to abolish not only battery cages but colony cages also. The effects
these farming methods have on hens is undeniably disgusting and needs to be stopped. In order for us to ensure farmers are treating their hens
ethically, routinely checks and stricter rules need to be

Keeping Chickens in Cities Essay
It's early morning one day while you are out on a early walk in your neighborhood. While enjoying the early birds singing their songs, the cool breeze,
and the peacefulness of it all before the day truly begins. Off in the distance, you hear a distinct "Cock–a–doodle doo!" 'Is that a rooster?', you say to
yourself. Later in the day you hear more characteristic clucking and crowing, and indeed, one of your neighbors is keeping chickens in the city.
Previously thought only be a rural animal, chickens are being kept more and more in urban settings as people turn toward the self–sustainability trend,
but this has not been without opposition. Even though chickens may be loud and messy, with proper care they are a valuable asset to those who... Show

two times more omega–3 fatty acids, three times more vitamin E, and seven times more beta carotene" (Long and Alterman, par.1) Backyard hens
are typically allowed to forage for food or receive leftover food from their keepers which increases the nutritional and taste value of their eggs.
According to a anonymous survey that I conducted, the majority of people said that they would keep chickens for fresh eggs. To say it simply,
happy hens lay better eggs. Animal Cruelty is unfortunately something that occurs on a daily basis in the United States. Many people are aware of

less space, per bird, than a regular 8.5"–by–11" sheet of paper." ("Birds" par. 3) Imagine being stuck in a packed elevator; It is a very similar feeling for

The Plague Of Fast Food Restaurants
Dru Olson
Marti
English 1A Sec V18
27 October 2015
Plague to Society Plague; as defined by dictionary.com is a widespread affliction, calamity, disease or evil. Fast food has become this plague for
America, outgrowing and overrunning the United States since the opening of Ray Kroc's first McDonalds restaurant in 1955. According to Leslie
Patton, reporter for Bloomberg Business, by 1983 6,000 McDonalds franchises covered the U.S. and for the next two decades the restaurant has
opened about 360 outlets in the U.S. every year. (Patton, "Have We Reached Peak Burger?") This fast and steady growth has encouraged rivals like
Burger King and Wendy's to do the same; oversaturating communities with corporate giants. The takeover of fastfood franchises has had a direct
relation to our health epidemic among American citizens, the decline in quality of life and the abuse of employees, and even livestock associated with
such franchises. The abundance of fast food restaurants in communities, especially those of lower income, influence consumer dietary choices and
intensifies obesity among adolescents and adults. Obesity is a major health concern in the United States; the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention reports that more than one–third of American adults are obese, and that obesity related conditions such as heart disease, stroke and type 2
diabetes are the leading cause of preventable death. A study by the "Retail Food Environment Index," shows that the number of unhealthy

The Negative Effects Of Rationalization In Food, Inc.
According to Weber, rationalization refers to the process by which modern society has increasingly become concerned with efficiency, predictability,
calculability, and control (Weber 2009). This leads to behaviors that are guided by reason and practicality. In the film Food, Inc. (2008), the owners of
the meat companies wanted to produce their products in a rational manor. The film portrays the side of the food industry that the companies do not want
the consumers to see. Although this rationalization may seem to be positive, there are many negative effects.
One example of food production in the film is the production of chickens. When interviewing the owners of the chicken farms, they were extremely
restricted on what they could say and show. The farmers took out thousands of dollars in loans to be able to start their farms. The farmers do not earn
enough to pay off their loans, so they are in a constant debt. On top of this, the farmers are required by the corporations to constantly update their
equipment. If they do not update the equipment, then they will lose their contracts. This further traps them in a cycle of debt and dependence on the
large corporations. If they do anything to go against the corporations, they can easily lose their contract and be replaced. These chickens are raised in
chicken coups where the majority of them never see sunlight. They are given hormones to increase the size of the chicken in less times. Scientist

Influencing The Lives Of Non Human Animals
Influencing the lives of non–human animals for centuries, animals have led to appreciable advancement in society. The interactions that occur between
people and non–human animals, particularly in the Appalachian region, has led to profound changes both on the local community and the nation. The
most significant interaction to take place and has influenced the area drastically is domestication. Four types of domestication at the forefront of
Appalachian culture are livestock, blood–sports, pet keeping, and animal's prevalence in oral folklore. The introduction of domestication previous to
and after the Neolithic Revolution has harbored new relationships between humans and animals that have altered the mountain face, culture, and
economy of the Appalachian region.
The most prevalent human–animal interaction to be observed and widely practiced in the Appalachian Mountains is the keeping of domesticated
animals. The region was widely used as hunting and gathering land previous to colonial expansion. Native Americans did not keep or domesticate
animals because of their animism beliefs, or the belief that all organisms and inanimate objects possess a soul ("Constructing Animals"). However, it
was not until the Neolithic Revolution reached the Appalachians that sustainable agriculture became a standard way to obtain food. In doing so
domesticated animals, particularly livestock, became common in the mountains. Hogs cattle, and chickens were kept on farms to allow for easier access

Betrayal and Hardship Revealed Through Killing Chickens

  • 1. Essay on Killing Chickens Killing Chickens Betrayal and loneliness are two of the hardest emotions to encounter in life. Nevertheless, at some point everyone will experience and be forced to deal with them. This is made even harder when they are caused by someone you love and trust. In Meredith Hall's "Killing Chickens", she uses various literary devices such as metaphor, simile, and imagery as she processes her husband's affair and describes having to kill chickens. Hall's literary nonfiction is based on the happenings of a specific day that was truly hard to handle after being deceived by ones she loved: I was killing chickens. It was my 38th birthday. My brother had chosen that morning to tell me that he had caught his wife – my best friend, Ashley – in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 'Better hide my surprise.'" Just as Hall identifies the chickens and her children, she explains, "I turned her on her floppy neck again and again. Corkscrewing her breathing tube, struggling to end the gasping." Just as Hall is making many attempts to kill the chicken, she is unable to do it until it finally gives in. This is the same way her husband has been treating her for the past ten years with all the rumors and suspicions until finally she reached a breaking point. The author uses a number of different literary devices to describe the hardship she feels such as metaphor, simile, and imagery. The author revels that her life and the chickens are not very different. "I felt her body break deep inside my own chest" (6). The way the chicken has to be killed after being loved for so long is the same way Hall feels about being with her husband for so long and then having him cheat on her and leave her. "Guilt and fear tugged me like an undertow" (7). The chickens are being killed by the one that loved them and in the same way; Hall is killed by the one she loved: her husband. The author uses a numerous number of vivid imagery to describe the struggle she is going through with her husband leaving and her having to kill the chickens. "Her shiny black beak opened and closed, opened and closed" (5). The rumors and suspicions that the author's husband was cheating on her would come and go, until it reached a breaking point ... • 2. Theme Of A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings It says,"..but the poor fellow is so old that the rain knocked him down," ( Marquez 363). This phrase is critical to the theme of the story as it provides the readers information on the Angel and allows them to understand he was frail and week. This also gives the people who found him a gateway to a larger domain of opportunities to obtain money. In the short story, "A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings." Gabriel Marquez, develops the character of the Angel through the use of symbols, character, and plot to demonstrate encounters with those who are weak and how the Angel overcomes adversity through courage and strength. First the author uses symbols to help describe the Angel and portray how weak the angel actually is. The Angel's wings symbolize strength and power. While the Angel is in the cage his wings are beat up and he is weak, but over time his wings begin to heal and he becomes more powerful. It says, "... and at the beginning of December some large, stiff feathers began to grow on his wings," (367). This line demonstrates the power the Angel is obtaining and soon after he... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Angel is spending the majority of the story with the chickens in the chicken coop. He has no room to move or stretch. This signifies how Pelayo and his wife doesnt have a second thought on the comfort or for the feelings of the Angel. The Angel is found laying in the mud at the begining with dilapidated wings. It says, "He spent his time trying to get comfortable in his borrowed nest, befuddled by the hellish heat of the oil lamps and sacramental candles that had been placed along the wire," (365). The author uses all of this to help the reader understand how low the Angel is mentally and how hard it's going to be to overcome the adversity the Angel is facing, rather than letting the conditions of his surrounding overcome ... • 3. Dog Monologue SCARS On my left hand, just slightly above my wrist, runs a long scar that goes over my BCG vaccine mark. Every time I look at it, I am reminded of how silly it was for me to try and restrain Popeye, our dog, from attacking an innocent chicken that was turned into one of my mom's favorite chicken stew delicacies not long after the incident. Nonetheless, the ride against the Kei apple fence was worth it as I believe no innocent chicken soul should be allowed to die in the jaws of an angry dog. Just below the wrist lies another scar courtesy of Puscat, our runaway cat. After long deliberation, we – my elder brother and I – had decided to rid Puscat of ticks that she had picked on her unsanctioned travels in a bid to prevent her from scratching ... • 4. Analysis of "A Savage Life" Essay Through the use of anecdotes in the article "A Savage Life", Suzanne Winckler effectively points out that it is important to understand where your food comes from. Winckler helps convey to readers that while butchering animals is no fun, it is necessary for the survival of omnivores. She argues that meat–eaters are out of touch with reality; instead of recognizing that an animal must be sacrificed for their meal, most consumers mindlessly devour the food on their plates – without a thought of where their food came from. Winckler states "I am too far gone in my rational Western head to appropriate the ritual of cultures for whom the bloody business of hunting was a matter of survival" (634); in this statement she adequately appeals to logos ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through this proclamation, Winckler successfully appeals to pathos because she makes it simple for the audience to see the connection between a newborn and a chicken about to lose its life. Both chickens and newborns are ignorant to the world and rather helpless – comparing a human to the food that one eats helps to put the killing of a chicken into perspective. Winckler then gruesomely explains what it is like to behead a chicken; appealing to both pathos and ethos: "Headless chickens don't run around. They thrash with such force and seeming coordination that they sometimes turn back flips" (633). By using imagery to describe this horrific requirement for killing a chicken, Winckler is seen as a credible and factual source. After slaying her first chicken, Winckler "realized why cultures, ancient and contemporary, develop elaborate rituals for coping with the grisly experience of killing any sentient creature" (633). She appeals to logos in this quote by informing readers of the epiphany she came to – taking them through her mind's thought process; this makes her come across as a logical being, not a demented human. By appealing to logos in this quote, Winckler invokes thought in readers' minds; she productively addresses that killing animals is disturbing and off–putting but necessary for survival, since most nations perform rituals ... • 5. Persuasive Speech On Zaxbys Zaxbys: Better Than Chick fil A Ana Woodsides Persuasive Speech If you are from the south, you have probably heard of the fast food chain Zaxby's. With more than 660 locations[bandwagon, logos], the company is worth billions, all made possible by two young entrepreneurs, Zach McLeroy and Tony Townley. The two have been best friends since fifth grade, where they decided that there was a need for better chicken. Later, McLeroy sold his drum set– giving up his rockstar career to start the chicken joint– which now boasts a annual revenue of about 1.7 billion. [anecdote, pathos] Chick fil a, the fast food restaurant commonly compared to Zaxbys, is very biased when it comes to controversial issues such as gay rights.[creating a problem– ethos] For one, they have supported many anti–gay organizations that are proven to be harmful to people. As for 'treatment' these organizations use, it has been said "that (the) damage they inflict on individuals can be deep and lasting" (Condon, NBC News). One individual, Samuel Brinton, described the methods used in conversion therapy as "mental torture." Even with two years of therapy, he is still not "cured" and now needs constant mental support as he often struggles with severe depression. Chick fil A continues to support these conversion organizations even though the American Psychological Association (APA), released a study in 2008 that stated "Homosexuality is not a mental disorder, and thus is not something that needs to or can be ... • 6. Fast Food Nation Thesis After reading chapter six of Fast Food Nation it has really opened my eyes as to how these fast food restaurants are not only having a large impact on humans but the treatment of chickens as well. While everyone knows that they kill animals in order to provide humans with meat not everyone knows how these animals are treated during the process. Though the invention of the chicken nugget was a new and better option for people it only provided worse treatment of these birds and caused lazier bird "farmers". Before "most Chicken was sold whole; today about 90 percent of chicken sold in the United States has been cut into pieces, cutlets, or nuggets,"(Schlosser 140). • 7. Persuasive Essay On Animal Testing It is hard to imagine a life without the childhood trips to the zoo, the circus, and other animal based attractions. It is even harder to imagine a daily life without digging in to a hamburger and washing it down with a cold glass of milk. It is almost impossible to imagine a life where one does nothing wrong, but it subject to abuse and torture for selfish purposes of another species. Animal exploitation is a common yet overlooked practice all around the world. Helpless animals are poked, prodded, and slaughtered without acknowledgement due to the satisfaction it brings to the human race. However, if it was known what happens behind the scenes of the making of your dinner or the production of your favorite show at SeaWorld, the lives of tortured animals could change forever. Domestic breeding is a commonly overlooked method of exploitation. Common in breeding and pet store chains, domestic breeding is defined by the ASPCA as "a large–scale commercial dog breeding operation that places profit over the well–being of its dogs–who are often severely neglected–and acts without regard to responsible breeding practices." Animals who are bred in mills are bred solely for profit; they are not appropriately cared for or provided with the proper living conditions. They live in these conditions for weeks to months before being sold or shipped off to a store. Often, theses animals are ridden with diseases and disorders due to inbreeding and unsanitary surroundings. Entertainment is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nickel And Dimed : Report Name: Kruti Shah BU ID: Nickel and Dimed: on (Not) Getting by in America Summary Nickel and Dimed: on (Not) getting by in America reveals low wage America in all its tenacity, anxiety, and surprising generosity – a land of big boxes, fast food, and a thousand desperate stratagems for survival. Barbara Ehrenreich, a scientist by training and a well known American writer and political activist emphasizes on the poverty of millions of low wage Americans as a state of emergency. She stated that majority of American workers, about 60 percent; earn less than $14 an hour. To find out, how people survive on six to seven dollar an hour, Barbara moved from Florida to Maine to Minnesota, taking the cheapest lodgings available and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Later in Maine, she stayed at Motel 6 for $120 rent per week. The room was only equipped with limited kitchen equipment like frying pan, a plate ,a small bowl, a coffee maker and one large drinking glass which left her with only one option of frying. Due to not having large cooking pot, pot holders, or a ladle to stir with (which cost about $30 at Kmart) she managed to cook her lunch with a slow burning, high protein combo of frozen chicken patties with melted cheese on top and canned pinto beans on the side. Her dinner was at workplace, where they offered their employees a choice of fish sandwich, or hamburger for only $2. In Minnesota, she rented a room without kitchen hence she managed to have her meals at low price (i.e. Chinese buffet or Kentucky fried chicken). Mostly due to limited cooking equipment, very low budget and insufficient time, Ms. Ehrenreich found it difficult to make healthy food choices. Also healthy food choices are generally expensive. According to the survey conducted by the U.S conference of Mayors, 67% of adults requesting emergency food aids are people with jobs. Recently, American food banks are experiencing a "torrent of need which they cannot meet". • 9. The Importance Of Eating Preferences In Children Possibly, your kids know that they can leverage your desire to get them to eat with their own preferences. If they can refuse until they get chicken nuggets, or can eat in front of the television, why change? We've all done what we've had to do in order to get through a meal. That said, we might make some leeway by instituting aneating schedule. In addition, we can make sure that meals are eaten together at the table. We all go off–plan sometimes. But try to be less forgiving about when and where food is served in your house. 3. Texture or smell. As a kid, you weren't a fan of broccoli (I wasn't). That doesn't differ from what adult women who want to drop a dress size may eat! Healthy brain, bone, and muscle development are crucial at this time, so a near–adult amount of calories makes sense. Not to mention, they need to eat for the energy typical of toddlers. Without it, listlessness and fatigue will occur, stunting their development. Other symptoms of nutritional deficiency may include crankiness, speech delays, and more frequent illnesses. And what of those nutritional shakes that promise to help our kids get precious vitamins and calories? They definitely work, but they're full of less–than–desirable ingredients. For example, one popular brand specifically marketed to kids includes the following: Added sugar – Not natural sugar, like from fruit; just more of the white stuff. Maltodextrin – A thickener and preservative that can cause sugar spikes and impact healthy gut bacteria.
  • 10. In addition to providing calories and (synthetic) vitamins, they're big on sugar and preservatives. In a way, it's quite counterproductive. We do our best to avoid or limit candy and soda, so they don't get hooked on it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Food Inc : Rhetorical Analysis Of Food, Inc. Food, Inc. : Rhetorical Analysis In the prestigious documentary film, Food Inc., produced by Robert Kenner and founded upon an Eric Schlosser's book, Fast Food Nation, Mr. Kenner has an intriguing impact on the American consumers of many food products and industries. Throughout the film, viewers and everyday consumers of these various products, visualize what takes place behind the scenes in food factories, contrary to what they may see through forms of advertisement. The documentary generates an image of an "Agrarian America" in a naturalistic way to convey the message of what food production truly consists of. The film uses ethos, pathos, and logos as rhetorical devices to enhance the horrendousness of food production to its audience in multiple ways. Food Inc. provides not only a visual effect on the audience's emotion to portray its message, but uses a variety of commentary scenes from several experts and members within the food industry. The film begins with an introduction scenery of acres and large amounts of crops (corn and wheat), along with cattle and other forms of animals used in the production of the meat industry. During the agricultural featured scene, Mr. Schlosser elucidated how food preferences and the way we eat is evolving at a rapid speed, while others still perceive the food industry as an agrarian corporation. The film then makes its emotional appeal towards the audience by providing images and videos of chickens in multiple repulsive situations. The chickens were thrown onto conveyor belts by primarily African American workers, which now accounts for a fine percentage of employees in the food industry. Schlosser elaborates on the unseen dilemma of animal and worker abuse in these corporations. He then exemplifies his realization of how the abuse is enacted in numerous ways, one of which is implementing restrictions as to what workers are allowed to do and say. They use these restrictions as a way of controlling their workers and providers in such industries, because the workers/providers can't risk losing the income they receive from these multi–billionaire companies. The above said scenes justifies how Schlosser uses emotional appeals to the viewers in order to enhance the initial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Selective Breeding And Mammal Cloning BIOLOGY Level 3 Achievement Standard: 91607 (3.7) v1 Selective Breeding and Mammal Cloning 'Demonstrate understanding of human manipulations of genetic transfer and its biological implications' 3 Credits Name: NadyaBuksh Year: 13G 2015 Selective breeding is the result of human manipulation of genetic transfer. It uses the same principle as natural selection. However, natural selection is the process of selection by the environment whereas;selective breeding is a form artificial selection by humans. Hence, selective breeding can be defined as the artificial process by which desirable or specific traits are selected to produce ideal breed of animals. This process of artificial selection is nothing recent as agriculture began thousands of years ago. Selective breeding however did commence with selection of plants containingdesired traits with the purpose of producing bigger and easier to harvest grains with a greater yield. As the decades progressed, technology became widespread and selective breeding started producing animals for meat, milk, clothes, eggs and several other human desires. Due to selective breeding, a smaller number of animals were required yet they produced a large amounts and better quality products. This was possible as the animals were being genetically manipulatedso that they contained desired traits. Similar is the case of birds especially chickens and turkeys whose are meat widely popular in a range of cuisines. There are two different types of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Short Story : Cinderell The Story Of Cinderella The evil step–vultures laughed as Cindahen fell down the stars carrying a big bag of soot, they all laughed harder as one of the vultures kicked the soot into her beautiful honey–gold feathers. The soot reduced Cindahen's beautiful golden feathers to a grey smudge and made her beautiful iridescent outline, dull and dirty. "Go clean our phones. NOW," demanded one the vulture in a tone that tried to relay self–importance but failed miserably. Cinderella barely concealed a sigh, the vulture's eye's narrowed and took a step towards her and raised a wing to strike her and the doorbell rang. The step–vultures desperately tried to fix their ugly feathers and the door opened. A messenger chicken at the door paused, taking in the scene, seeing Cinderella covered in soot and the vultures attempting to fix their ugly, oily feathers. The chicken blanched and dropped an E–book on the floor and ran away retching. They all crowded together and ran to their room to see what dresses to wear and what feather cream to use. Cindahen glanced at the picture on the E–book and frowned and wondered why they were making such a big deal of it. Cindahen muttered to herself 'Not even worth being a rooster, needs to be more glamorous. And more tech–savvy as she saw the ancient phone in his hand and broken equipment in the background. One of the vultures came back into the room and growled. The vulture smacked Cindahen so hard she collapsed onto the ground and the vulture screamed right into her ear, "CLEAN OUR PHONES." Cindahen's eyes watered and shock her head. That small act of defiance infuriated the vulture. It screamed in anger and attacked her, ripping her feathers and smacking her. The other vultures heard Cindahen's screams and came into the room to berate her but saw her being attacked. Their eyes widened and joined the attack of Cindahen. • 15. Capitol Hill Quackery : Congress Attacks Poultry Farmers We have all wondered where, and how the poultry that is in our grocery stores had gotten there at some point in time, whether if we eat meat or not. When we find out, we are not too ecstatic with the results. It is unbelievable what they do just in order to get profit from the many variations of chicken the companies produce. They treat the birds as if they are not a living, breathing animal sitting right in front of them. They have no sympathy, for this wonderful creation, and all that it has to offer us. The companies only care about the money, and will do anything to get it. Big chicken industries such as Tyson and Perdue, force farmers to raise their chickens in certain ways, and by doing this, the chickens are raised in unhealthy conditions, which puts consumers' health at risk. Capitol Hill Quackery: Congress Attacks Poultry Growers (again), the House of Appropriations Committee, which is tasked with authorizing the budget for our federal government, decided to push a sneaky "rider" into the budget process that would block the USDA from issuing protections for poultry growers under contract with large companies like Tyson, Perdue and Pilgrim's Pride (Harive). Most poultry growers are forced to take on massive amounts of debt to secure their contracts with these companies (Harvie). Contract Poultry Farmers Speak Out, Get Heard, the companies lie to the farmers to get them to work for their businesses, even if the farmers know that the business is not a good one. The ... We can see examples of these things in the two short documentaries that we viewed in class. • 21. Advertisement Of A Mcdonald 's Advertisement We see advertisements and commercials all the time in our daily lives. Sometimes, though, more often than not, we over look things that might be presented to us, without even realizing it. A McDonald's advertisement is something everyone is familiar with. Whether we are ignoring the subtleties that are hidden in the advertisements message, or we are paying attention to the tricks that are being used to draw us in, McDonalds knows how to make an effective ad. At the beginning of the McDonald's ad we see the front yard of a little girl's house as her mother does yard work in the background. As the little girl sits on the sidewalk steps, we find that she has a grey cloud hovering over her head. We hear a piano jingle from the beginning of the commercial as it zooms in to show the glum look on her face when she looks up at the cloud. Trying to scoot out from underneath the cloud she realizes it doesn't work because the cloud follows her. Even blowing at it doesn't work. Instantly Ronald McDonald walks up and says, "hi there (McDonalds)." Her face lights up just long enough to say hi back. He looks at the cloud and kneels down to her level. He mentions her day is going bad and with a sad look she replies, "I'll say (McDonalds)." After he tells her it could be worse, the cloud begins to rain on her. With sarcasm she then says, "Awesome (McDonalds)." This is when the piano jingle changes from instrumental to spoken words. Ronald then reaches up and grabs the cloud as the words in ... The interactions that occur between people and non–human animals, particularly in the Appalachian region, has led to profound changes both on the local community. The most significant interaction to take place and has influenced the area drastically is domestication. Four types of domestication at the forefront of Appalachian culture are livestock, blood–sports, pet keeping, and animal's prevalence in oral folklore. The introduction of domestication previous to and after the Neolithic Revolution has harbored new relationships between humans and animals that have altered the mountain face, culture, and economy of the Appalachian region. The most prevalent human–animal interaction to be observed and widely practiced in the Appalachian Mountains is the keeping of domesticated animals. The region was widely used as hunting and gathering land previous to colonial expansion. Animals were not domesticated by Native Americans their animism, or the belief that all organisms and inanimate objects possess a soul ("Constructing Animals"). However, it was not until the Neolithic Revolution reached the Appalachians that sustainable agriculture became a standard way to obtain food. In doing so domesticated animals, particularly livestock, became common in the mountains. Hogs cattle, and chickens were kept on farms to allow for easier access to meat, dairy, and eggs. • 23. Persuasive Essay : Should Factory Farming Be Banned? Persuasive Essay on should factory farming be allowed Industrialization is playing a critical role in the American economy revolution. Massive production bridges the demand gap through provisions in the scarce resources. On the other hand, at what critical point the factory farming crosses the line of expectations. Factory farms dominate U.S. food production, employing abusive practices that maximize agribusiness profits at the expense of the environment, our communities, animal welfare, and even our health. The primary focus of these factories is to generate as much profit margins as possible. Also, they result in the massive killing of livestock on an assembly line systematically. Althoughfactory farming is a massive production with limited time space, lower cost and increase in the income, and genetically engineered and restricts from natural engagement but people fall sick because of the need to eat at the end of the day. I believe factory farming is cruel and should be banned. Factory farming gained momentum in 1926 and focused mainly on chicken rearing. The farming method did not follow any design, but the results were evident. Lyson, (2012) says that through the winter back in Peninsula, a confinement of 450 chickens in one of the farmer's stores increased massively to an account of 250,000 in 10 years. This act is where fast food farming and genetic freaks, borrows the idea of factory farming Pluhar, (2007). Huge egg producing factories emancipates towards the end ... "Maybe I shouldn't be consuming animal products." Perhaps all those ideas are just thoughts, or maybe it's your conscience trying to tell you that the way you are living is wrong. Maybe your body is trying to tell you something, but you are just not listening. If you won't listen to your body will you give me a chance? Have you ever thought of the cows? Do you ever wonder if their misfortune actually helps your bones grow? Oh sure, we all have heard about the negative effects of slaughterhouses, but how about dairy farms? Upton Sinclair put the idea of slaughter houses in your head, but did you ever consider how that Brie got to your plate? Hours and hours of nonstop milking are done by the hands of farmers, but most likely your Brie came from the milk of cows that were tortured by milking machines and were put on medication to produce excess milk beyond their natural abilities. Milk is a byproduct of medicine. The cows become intoxicated with medicine just to produce enough milk to fill supermarkets so you can give it to your children. Is that what you really want? To fill your children with the milk made for a calf? Did you ever think of her as a mother who wishes to solely raise her calf? However, she is forced to live a life slave to man and his desire to consume cow milk. Perhaps the chicken is more near and dear to your heart. The dead chicken fetus that will not have the ability to breathe for the first time. And her poor mother who will stay all her life in a chicken coop trapped in a lightless room until the end of her days. Did you ever think of her? According to the USDA "Producers must demonstrate to the Agency that the poultry has been allowed access to the outside" (FSIS). This astonishing fact does not specify any quantity of time that a chicken would be allowed outside. Technically, a farmer can get a "free range" label if he has a door for the chickens to go out of. Because of the vague wording the USDA provided, farmers avoid letting their chickens out, but still put "free range" because their chickens have "access" to the outside world. After many failed escape attempts the chickens are low on morale until a flying rooster from the circus come to their rescue. Also Mrs. Tweedy has a very sniggering tone of voice that just adds to the evil and sinister character being quickly built up in the space of five seconds. In this scene the lighting is particularly harsh as Mrs. Tweedy's clothing is quite contradictive as she is dressed in a pink dressing gown and a pink frilly nightdress. Her face is in shadow so she looks garish and very cold hearted. In this first scene we are quickly led to the assumption that Mrs. Tweedy is the boss and the chickens are small and unimportant. The Current State Of America's Meat Industry Key to the current state of America's meat industry, according to Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma, is the fact that it is primarily hidden from the consumer. The consumer, as well as corporations, have chosen to build walls instead of demanding transparency. The general public and journalists are not permitted to enter abattoirs of many corporations, leaving the judgement of how animals should be slaughtered to the businesses themselves. State and federal regulations are not often put into practice as they should be, enabling the corporation to decide what is 'humane' and what is not. Pollan argues that transparency in the meat industry would hold businesses accountable to regulations and to the desires of the consumer as well as preventing the abuse of our natural resources. Pollan's statement in Omnivore's Dilemma, 'No other country raises and slaughters its food animals quite as intensively or as brutally as we do', is not a claim to fame for the USA. Many Americans would not necessarily agree with this statement because they are ignorant of the system, they have chosen not to see what really happens to the animals they eat every day. Corporations have been permitted to pursue profit irrespective of the cost. Pollan explores the issue by discovering what he would consider the wrong ways as well as the right ways to slaughter animals for their meat. In his effort to find the right way, when working on Polyface farm, Pollan dreaded being a part of processing the chickens. Yet, he knew that because he ate meat, he needed an education in the reality of killing animals. He could not go on as a meat eater if he was not willing to be fully acquainted with what having meat on a dinner plate entails. By killing a chicken and coming to terms with how that made him feel, he could develop a personal insight into the ethics of eating animals. A perfect example of this would be the clown fromMcDonald's, his bizarre and inhuman looks capturing the visual attention of the consumer while the mild–mannered psychotic behavior both tantalizes us and fills us with fear of the consequences of not consuming the double cheese burger. Another prime example would be the burger king (view a commercial with the king and all of this will make perfect sense) and his disturbing imagery and behavior, simply appearing at your bed side offering "flame broiled" delights always with a exceedingly morbid and paralyzing smile suggesting that the burgers are poisoned and that one will die as a result of eating them (of course the commercial never shows the fate of the kings victim). In retrospect while it may appear that the gimmicks themselves do not actually draw the consumer in the imagery mixed with their events taking place seem to have captured and reeled in the consumers mind and thus achieved the companies' goal. This inhumane way of farming has to stop as it's detrimental to the rights of hens and all animals to live and be treated without cruelty and I believe it is simply unjust. Not only are these defenseless Hens killed, they are also denied the right to move and walk, are arguably tortured and will never spread their wings. The ban of battery cages needs to take a stronger stance as the phasing out of battery cages by 2022 serves only to make way for colony cages which are just as cruel. Colony cages fail to meet the welfare of Hens and don't provide them with the sufficient space they need. They're illegal... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe that the cost is well worth it because the welfare of animals is very important. The raise in egg and poultry prices will have an impact on families all over New Zealand unless the government subsidises the abolishment of battery farming and colony cages. If the government continues to keep the prices the same as they are now while making NZ farms free range it will be a win/win situations for both the welfare of animals and humans. The change in egg prices may not be as drastic for Kiwi families as I have found there is just a mere $0.24 difference between a single size 7 factory farmed egg and free range eggs at countdown. Is a couple of dollars per dozen eggs really worth the exploitation of hens? Caged eggs may be cheaper but it comes at the expense of Animal welfare. New Zealand needs to abolish not only battery cages but colony cages also. The effects these farming methods have on hens is undeniably disgusting and needs to be stopped. In order for us to ensure farmers are treating their hens ethically, routinely checks and stricter rules need to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Keeping Chickens in Cities Essay It's early morning one day while you are out on a early walk in your neighborhood. While enjoying the early birds singing their songs, the cool breeze, and the peacefulness of it all before the day truly begins. Off in the distance, you hear a distinct "Cock–a–doodle doo!" 'Is that a rooster?', you say to yourself. Later in the day you hear more characteristic clucking and crowing, and indeed, one of your neighbors is keeping chickens in the city. Previously thought only be a rural animal, chickens are being kept more and more in urban settings as people turn toward the self–sustainability trend, but this has not been without opposition. Even though chickens may be loud and messy, with proper care they are a valuable asset to those who... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In multiple studies conducted by Mother Earth News, pastured eggs may contain up to "1/3 less cholesterol, Вј less saturated fat, 2/3 more vitamin A, two times more omega–3 fatty acids, three times more vitamin E, and seven times more beta carotene" (Long and Alterman, par.1) Backyard hens are typically allowed to forage for food or receive leftover food from their keepers which increases the nutritional and taste value of their eggs. According to a anonymous survey that I conducted, the majority of people said that they would keep chickens for fresh eggs. To say it simply, happy hens lay better eggs. Animal Cruelty is unfortunately something that occurs on a daily basis in the United States. Many people are aware of how bad dog and cat cruelty is and oppose it, but what about the livestock kept by large food producers? According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or the ASPCA, " All birds–egg laying hens, meat chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and others–– are excluded from all federal animal protection laws" ("Birds" par. 1) All of these birds are seen as food animals, however, does this mean that they cannot be treated humanely? In the same article, the ASPCA claims that "More than 90% of egg–laying hens are confined in enclosures called 'battery cages' that provide less space, per bird, than a regular 8.5"–by–11" sheet of paper." ("Birds" par. 3) Imagine being stuck in a packed elevator; It is a very similar feeling for these hens ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. The Plague Of Fast Food Restaurants Dru Olson Marti English 1A Sec V18 27 October 2015 Plague to Society Plague; as defined by dictionary.com is a widespread affliction, calamity, disease or evil. Fast food has become this plague for America, outgrowing and overrunning the United States since the opening of Ray Kroc's first McDonalds restaurant in 1955. According to Leslie Patton, reporter for Bloomberg Business, by 1983 6,000 McDonalds franchises covered the U.S. and for the next two decades the restaurant has opened about 360 outlets in the U.S. every year. (Patton, "Have We Reached Peak Burger?") This fast and steady growth has encouraged rivals like Burger King and Wendy's to do the same; oversaturating communities with corporate giants. The takeover of fastfood franchises has had a direct relation to our health epidemic among American citizens, the decline in quality of life and the abuse of employees, and even livestock associated with such franchises. The abundance of fast food restaurants in communities, especially those of lower income, influence consumer dietary choices and intensifies obesity among adolescents and adults. Obesity is a major health concern in the United States; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than one–third of American adults are obese, and that obesity related conditions such as heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes are the leading cause of preventable death. A study by the "Retail Food Environment Index," shows that the number of unhealthy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Negative Effects Of Rationalization In Food, Inc. According to Weber, rationalization refers to the process by which modern society has increasingly become concerned with efficiency, predictability, calculability, and control (Weber 2009). This leads to behaviors that are guided by reason and practicality. In the film Food, Inc. (2008), the owners of the meat companies wanted to produce their products in a rational manor. The film portrays the side of the food industry that the companies do not want the consumers to see. Although this rationalization may seem to be positive, there are many negative effects. One example of food production in the film is the production of chickens. When interviewing the owners of the chicken farms, they were extremely restricted on what they could say and show. The farmers took out thousands of dollars in loans to be able to start their farms. The farmers do not earn enough to pay off their loans, so they are in a constant debt. On top of this, the farmers are required by the corporations to constantly update their equipment. If they do not update the equipment, then they will lose their contracts. This further traps them in a cycle of debt and dependence on the large corporations. If they do anything to go against the corporations, they can easily lose their contract and be replaced. These chickens are raised in chicken coups where the majority of them never see sunlight. They are given hormones to increase the size of the chicken in less times. Scientist realized that most people prefer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Influencing The Lives Of Non Human Animals Influencing the lives of non–human animals for centuries, animals have led to appreciable advancement in society. The interactions that occur between people and non–human animals, particularly in the Appalachian region, has led to profound changes both on the local community and the nation. Native Americans did not keep or domesticate animals because of their animism beliefs, or the belief that all organisms and inanimate objects possess a soul ("Constructing Animals"). However, it was not until the Neolithic Revolution reached the Appalachians that sustainable agriculture became a standard way to obtain food. In doing so domesticated animals, particularly livestock, became common in the mountains. Hogs cattle, and chickens were kept on farms to allow for easier access ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
