The Movie Inside Out
Both the movies, Inside Out and Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind focus heavily on memory and
the impact that memory has on one's life. The movie Inside Out focuses on how memories and the
emotions attached to them can shape us and a our personalities. The movie depicts in animated form
the basics of memory, short term memory, long term memory and forgetting. It as shows the idea of
mood congruent effect. Mood congruent effect is the idea that you remember memories that were
encoded when you were in that same mood easier than when you are in a different mood. That can
been seen in Inside Out because when Riley is happy she can recall the happy memories of her
family and friends in Minnesota, but when Sadness and Joy get lost in long term memory and Riley
is without them, Riley has a much harder time remembering the good things in her life she is only
able to see the bad. The idea of mood congruent effect can also be seen in the movie Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, this is seen when Joel's memories of Clementine are being erased, at
first they are erasing the negative memories and they go from one negative memory to another with
ease, when they finally jump to a happy memory, he jumps from happy memory to happy ... Show

In Inside Out, it is shown that tubes suck the memory from long term memory to short term
memory. The only problem that is shown in the movie with retrieval is memory decay, in the movie
this is shown as a dulling of the memory, and eventually the memory is sent to the memory dump
where it is forgotten. The concepts of encoding failure and retrieval failure are not shown in the
movie. Memory retrieval is depicted in the movie Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind in a very
different way. They show memory retrieval through cues from objects, so in the process of erasing
the memory of someone from one's mind, one must get rid of everything that might remind them of
that person they are

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind Essay
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a movie about both the value of memory and, because
every sci–fi movie ever has this theme, playing God. Let us focus more on the memory because in
my opinion it just more interesting. Joel, after his ex–girlfriend Clementine stops recognizing him,
discovers she went to a clinic that allows for a memory to be removed precisely from a person's
brain. Devastated, he decides to go to through the same procedure himself. Most of the movie takes
place in Joel's mind as his memory is being removed. This movie uses structure in the most
interesting way, beginning with a scene fairly far in the film's actual timeline, as Joel and
Clementine meet for the second time with their memories erased. The film assaults us with random
memories and experiences of Joel and Clementine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The movie's title refers to the poem Eloisa to Abelard, which elements memory and man's loss of
innocence of wonder as a consequence of it. As it says in lines 207–210, "How happy is the
blameless vestal's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless
mind! Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd" The film's goal seems to reject this idea in
every sense by showing how the distracted the lack of memory to the least. The film has an overall
ton of gloom all throughout it, with a washed out color palette, as if to say, this is what we get by
destroying memory. The constantly changing set composition of anyone who is in the film serves to
portray Joel's ruthlessness. The fractured and repeated dialogue conveys Clementine herself
becoming fractured, a key piece of dialogue here is "I'm lost, I'm scared, I feel like I'm
disappearing." As we see, Clementine's identity is being taken with her memory. The director doesn't
stop by saying we need memory to be stable, he goes on to say, without memory we are destined to
repeat our

Cinematic Styles in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 2004, written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by
Michel Gondry, deviates from conventional film by using not only naturalistic elements but
elements of surrealism as well. The film has many conventional elements that make it enjoyable to
watch for many people, and for it to have mainstream. The surrealism elements give the film a
unique perspective on a romantic plot, and makes the scenes visually exciting. Even though the
other film styles are used, the narrative is definitely naturalistic at its core, despite its use of other
film styles. Overall, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a film that is partly conventional,
surreal and naturalistic in both its narrative and its visual elements.
The film tells the story of a couple who deals with their breakup by erasing their memories of each
other through a medical procedure that eliminates specific parts of someone's memory. The
filmmakers go about this with the use of editing that tells the story of their relationship from the start
until the moment when they both decide they no longer can be together. The film is edited in a way
that makes scenes that are typically realistic become surreal in order to show how even under
extreme circumstances the couples fate is beyond their control. This start to the movie puts the
audience in a position of a voyeur in Joel and Clementine relationship, which in the opening scene

Film Analysis of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Essay
In Michael Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), the connections between people
and memories become the focal point of a very unique romance. Through the use of new
technology, the possibility of erasing memories makes painful relationships disappear like they
never happened. The tale of Joel and Clementine allows the audience to rethink and question the
process they undergo as beneficial or destructive. Though the process might be helpful in
eliminating the pain caused from another person, four key scenes show how the lessons learned
through relationship experiences are important. At the start of the film, Joel Barish (Jim Carey) finds
himself waking up in the morning from what appears to have been a deep sleep. With a ... Show

Though Joel is very nervous and unsure about walking out onto the frozen river, Clementine runs
and slides past him. After falling and getting up, she then pressures Joel to step out of his comfort
zone and to walk out onto the ice. At this point, the outing becomes more than just a part of a
romantic date, but also a new experience for Joel. While Joel is normally quiet and to himself about
everything, this outing made him get out of his comfort zone and do something he otherwise
wouldn't even think to do. With this being a new experience for him to loosen up and have some
fun, such a lesson could provide him a change of pace from the dull and boring routine of his normal
life. Another scene in the movie is the fight between Clementine and Joel. Joel is sitting at home
worried late one night when Clementine shows up at three in the morning tipsy. She tells Joel that
she wrecked his car, which upsets Joel. He begins letting his emotions get the best of him and fires
off by telling her how she was being irresponsible and could have seriously injured someone.
Responding to the criticism, Clementine tells Joel he sounds like an old lady. The small argument
grows larger as the two begin throwing low blows targeting each other's insecurities. At this point,
Clementine quickly grabs her things and leaves. Having a dispute with someone is a part of life.

Many other people have been in similar situations which have taught them a 'life lesson'. In Gondry
and Kaufman's Eternal Sunshine, Dr Howard Mierzwiak knew of the power of memories. He went
about erasing people's memories without telling them the full consciences of their actions; like Joel
who midway through the erasing process realised he wanted to keep them, his life afterwards was
different as he didn't have his memories of Clementine to remind him of what love felt like. Our
memories strongly shape our perception of events. In the popular culture film Vantage Point each
character has a different perspective due to their memories. It shows six different perspectives of the
same event, the attempted assassination of the President while greeting a crowd in Salamanca, Spain
before his speech. Soon after several bombs go off in the surrounding area and many people are
hurt. Each person who witnessed this event had a different view. GNN TV producer Rex Brooks was
busy delegating tasks to his workers when the shot was fired his reality instantly changed when he
saw his reporter lying lifeless on the ground after the explosions. This made him realise that this
event was going to affect his future. Thomas Barnes a secret service agent also saw the assassination
attempt and recognised the reality that people were in danger and that he had the ability to help due
to his training. The Spanish police officer

"The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind" and "Crow Lake" resemble a theme of regret. In the
"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", Clementine erased Joel from her memory, as a result, this
affected Joel mentally as he felt the need to do the same out of anger. Although, as he was
undergoing the procedure, he started to regret his decision once he realizes how much he cherished
and appreciated the memories of their relationship. Joel also realizes the mistakes he made
throughout the relationship while encountering them again. Similarly in Crow Lake, Kate felt regret
for Matt that he should have went to university to get a higher education with a well–payed job to
achieve a good life–style. She felt that Matt had missed a very life changing opportunity that ...

Another theme that is present in both works of literature is memories. In "The Eternal Sunshine of
the Spotless mind", Joel wanted to forget his memories with Clementine, but he soon realized that
he cherished those memories and did not want to lose them. As a result, he tried to hide them in his
childhood memories from the machine detecting them in his mind. Similarly in Crow Lake, Kate
tried to hide her childhood memories from Daniel as she did not want Daniel to know any part of
her past life. Interaction was also an important theme in both works. In "The Eternal Sunshine of the
Spotless mind", Joel was not able to state his feelings clearly to Clementine. He wrote thoughts in a
journal that he kept. Though, Clementine supported him when he felt sad or alone. This showed that
if Joel had opened up about his feelings to Clementine, his emotions that he wanted to express so
eagerly would not have built up inside him. Similarly in Crow Lake, Kate kept her feelings about
Daniel to herself because she felt that if she got too emotionally attached to Daniel, she would end
up losing him just like she lost her

"I try to learn from both, from features and documentaries. In both cases you have to find a way to
make the camera as discreet as possible, and flexible enough to be able to capture the moment when
it happens. I know from documentary how to not have a preconceived idea of what the scene could
be". – Michel Gondry
As this quote from French film director Michel Gondry suggests, the ability of a director to create a
film that hides the camera and the construction of a film remains difficult. In his 2004 film, Eternal
Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, Gondry utilizes the full potential of the film medium, to express his
own unique visual style. He has a number of films that he has directed such as Human Nature,
which was also written by scriptwriter Charlie Kaufman. Both Gondry and Kaufman have worked in
collaboration for a number of years, which has earnt them huge acclaim for their successes in
creating huge box office hits that were created on minimal budgets. IMBD states that the production
budget for the film was 20 million dollars with a further 10 million set aside for the marketing
budget. In addition to this, Gondry has cemented his own visual style as a director as "there is
always a battle with time, but not usually in terms of beating deadlines" (Dzialo, 2009: 107). This
essay will analyze the style of the film, the narrative construction within the film, generic features
and key concepts and the idea of personal style through the auteur. It will be argued that

The Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind By Charlie Kaufman
Bianca Rincon ENGL 300: Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless
Mind, written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry, immerses viewers in a space of
artistic expression from one scene to the next. Manipulating light and color in its filmic style, it
stamps the viewer's ticket and takes them on an emotional roller coaster ride, capturing the same
distortion that Joel feels in his life and mind as he undergoes a procedure and loses his memory.
Deftly, the film captures the effects of the memory erasing procedure by drawing readers into the
subjective world held in Joel's mind. Cinematography, editing, and mise–en–scene work together to
create a space where the audience can feel the emotion provoked by the characters and narrative in
an incredibly genuine way, hand–held cameras used to further highlight this effect. The film follows
Joel Barish and his relationship with Clementine Kruczynski, passionate but highly dysfunctional in
nature. The film stretches over a couple of years, showing both its peak and nadir, leading to the end
of their relationship. Joel, hurt and perplexed, realizes that Clementine has undergone a memory
erasing procedure at Lacuna in an endeavor to erase any trace or memory of Joel. Upset, he finds the
doctor and demands the same operations. Trapped in his mind, he relives memories as they are
erased and realizes the importance of his past, his relationship with Clementine, and what that

Spotless Mind Themes
There are moments in a person's life when she wishes she there was a way to remove unpleasant
memories forever, to forget either that person responsible of a heartbreak, or a loved one who died
recently, or a traumatic event; however, what would happen if there was a process capable of
deleting someone's painful memories? Would a person be the same after the procedure? And most
important, is a person condemned to repeat their past if they don't remember it?
Charlie Kaufman's 2004 script, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, tries to give some insight
into these questions by using philosophical themes such as memory and its connection to personal
identity, determinism, and existentialism. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind tells the story ...

Indeterminism is the belief that chance, rather than fate, is the determining factor in the outcomes of
one's life. In the case of Joel and Clementine it could be argue that it's incredible unbelievable that
the only shard remaining of Clementine in Joel's mind was "Meet me in Montauk" and nothing else.

Eternal Sunshine Belonging
I remember writing a speech in English class in high school about human behavior on happiness. In
this paper I wrote, "I think we spend too much time contemplative on the undesirable certainties of
our past and we become so blinded by all the good things that are happening around us." The song
Eternal Sunshine is written by Jhenè Aiko; in this song she reaches out for something more intimate
like disturbing memories hidden deep within her mind. This specific music video takes you through
a series of events from Jhenè's past, stressing the presence of thoughts we put aside when
surrounded by people, things we only think about when we are in a dark place in life, and concealed
in eternal thoughts. Throughout the video, Jhenè's body is arising from the ground while her
potentially fatal car accident is vividly reenacted behind her along with good remembrances from
her childhood. Though Jhenè Aiko is usually speaking about love and weed that does not infer that
she has not had her fair stake of pain within her personal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Jhenè brings in the video with her body slowly uprising from the bare streets behind her. Though the

viewers the desire to look forward to an unpredictable scene. By this being the introduction to
Jhenè's music video, it instantly sets the mood and emotions for the audience. It was a great
introduction to the movie because it made wonder what was going to happen next. Before the video

The Spotless Mind
Next I will start discussing the ethical issues represented in the other film 'Eternal Sunshine of the
Spotless Mind.' This film deals with the ethical implications concerning memory loss. In the film,
Joel and Clementine, who are ex–lovers, remove memories of each other. If you could erase
someone from your life, would you? The act of erasing a person's memory appears at first so highly
unethical, even when the characters in the film have actually requested for it. The early stages of the
film suggests, however, that Joel and Clementine's relationship were not working out well, and so
they eventually chose to wipe it off from their memories for their own happiness. According to
utilitarianism, by which an act is ethical as long as it maximizes ... Show more content on

Kant's categorical imperative states two main points: to act out of duty, and to never use people as a
means. Although all people are given the freedom to make their own choices, removing our
memories actually limits our own freedom, and is the same as living a lie. The film suggests that to
remember does not solely imply the retainment of a memory, but it also includes taking
responsibility for one's own actions ("for my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am
willing to know the whole truth; to the know the worst, and to provide for it" (Eternal Sunshine of
the Spotless Mind, 2004). Kant states that persons, as rationale agents, have a capacity for freedom
and dignity, and deserve respect. However, in the film, through memory removal, the value of truth
gets distorted and leads the characters to actually reject themselves. What makes this self–
objectification ironic is that this is the consequence of the procedure that had been self–consented.
What makes this even more contradictory is that they are using their own rights and freedom to
actually limit their freedom – which under Kant's rationale is considered problematic. There is an
obvious lack of self–respect in the film as everyone is characterized by self–destruction: Joel's
depression, Clementine's alcoholism, and Mary's insecurity, which are all self–harming activities.
The unethical issue of memory removal in the film is also derived from the very nature of the
technology itself, as it is portrayed as misguided and dangerous. The people who actually prescribe
the procedure also seem to have no respect for the value of memory, and the possible consequences
that might follow. Thus, Kantianism, in direct contrast to Utilitarianism, would not consent to the
memory removal procedure in the film no matter what the reason is or the consequences that

Joel's Imaginary Actions: Spotlighting in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
While music always plays a significant part to convey emotions in film, light can be used just as
effectively. The use of a special lighting technique is very noticeable in the memory scenes of
Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. A major part of Eternal Sunshine is spent
inside the protagonist Joel's mind. He is in the process of deleting his memory of Clementine, who
was his girlfriend for two years. Two main lighting styles are used throughout the scenes which play
inside Joel's mind. On one hand, natural bright lighting and on the other hand a darker setting with
only one light source, carrying a strong resemblance of a spotlight (Jason Sperb, ... Show more

However, this time instead of desperately chasing the spotlight he walks towards it in a decidedly
confident manner. Both Joel and Clementine first walk through a house party and end up in
Mierzwiak's clinic. There, Joel starts talking to Mierzwiak who is in turn talking to another version
of Joel. This other version of Joel is part of the memory and does not react to the Joel we are
following around. However, Mierzwiak acknowledges the Joel who enters the memory and starts
talking to him. This whole scene is only lit by one spotlight moving back and forth in a tracking shot
between the three characters. (Eternal Sunshine, 55:59–56:44) It is again, an event which has not
happened in real life, but is just part of Joel's imagination. This could not have been the way Joel
perceives this specific memory, as Sperb called it, as Mierzwiak is saying things which would not
make sense in the real–life scenario. Joel is now contacting the memory he has of Mierzwiak instead
of screaming his name out into the void. He is trying out different tactics and none of them seem to

Analysis Of The Movie ' The Spotless Mind ' Essay
Bitter Nepenthe Friedrich Nietzsche once said, "blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even
of their blunders." We always think that forgetting is the solution to our misery. We indulge in the
idea that ignorance is bliss and that what we don't remember won't hurt us. But do we really get the
better of our mistakes if we forget about them? Do forgetting and ignorance make us better people?
Does oblivion make us happier? Is it worth going out of our way to make sure we forget? These are
the kinds of questions Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind addresses. Even though it is one of
those movies which grapples with immense philosophical concepts, it does so effortlessly and
without seeming elitist or pretentious. In this romance–science–fiction–comedy hybrid Charlie
Kaufman 's amazing script as well as Michel Gondry 's whimsical direction captivate us. As is the
case with every Kaufman film, the movie discusses the consequences of tampering with human
nature in the light of human fallibility and memories. However, Eternal Sunshine has a remarkable
essence in that the burning issue at its heart is whether your life is merely a predestined route to an
inevitable destination. While the film has traces of science–fiction conventions, Gondry's signature
downplaying of special effects and producing the captivating frames directly during shooting
(through removing or adding objects to the set between shots) ensures that the viewer does not get

The film that I chose to analyse is none other than Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind. Eternal
Sunshine of the spotless mind is a very intriguing movie that explores many dimensions of
relationships ups and down. The creative genius behind this production is Michel Gondry, a very
cleverly written script by Charlie Kaufman and the cherry on the top performance by Jim Carey and
Kate Winslet. Although this film has been widely raved about by film critics, there are still many
who find this movie rather confusing or boring. However, this film has formed a cult–like fan base
that has devoted their time and energy into understanding and analysing this film. This paper will
further analyse this film through different aspects such as the directors style and influence, the film
style, narrative construction, generic features of the film, symbolism and others.
The Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind ventures into the world of relationships. This movie is a
combination of several genres including drama, romance, surrealism, realism and also elements of
science fiction. Joel Barish and Clementine Kruczynski were both in a very complicated relationship
for the span of two years which eventually led to their break up. Shattered by their break up,
Clementine undergoes a procedure to remove every memory of their relationship from her mind.

The Effect Of Making A Person Visible And Isolated
In Michel Foucault's essay, Panopticism, the effects of making a person visible and isolated are
explained. Before Foucault addresses his theory, Panopticism, he first explains Jeremy Bentham's
architectural structure, the Panopticon. Foucault explains the Panopticon structure is "at the
periphery, an annular building; at the center, a tower" (184). Essentially, this means that there is a
larger tower in the center, which is completed surrounded by individual cells. These cells have both
a window facing the tower and one facing away; this allows light to shine through the windows
making the prisoner completely visible. Combined with making a prisoner visible, some type of
superior must be in the tower periodically to ensure the feeling of ... Show more content on

In conjunction self–policing, the panoptic structure and Panopticism are useful for "drawing up
differences" between people (190). Due to the fact that each of the prisoners are enclosed in their
own isolated cell, their different tempers, aptitudes, and several other personality traits can be
analyzed without the fear of imitation from viewing other inmates behaving differently. I will be
utilizing Foucault's theory of Panopticism to analyze my experiences in a nursing home that has the
same structural design as panoptic structure. The nursing home that I am reflecting my experience
from resembles a panoptic structure because there is a central nurse's station surrounded by
individual resident rooms and a common gathering space. The nurse's station and the necessary staff
rooms are at the center of the unit, similar to the central tower. This is the command center for
information about the resident's behavior and any change in their medical or temperamental status.
Ultimately, this is where the power source is situated. Conversely, this makes the resident's rooms
similar to cells and the residents inside, comparable to prisoners. In each resident room there is
almost everything the resident would need such as a bathroom, clothes, and various personal items.
Like a prisoner in the panoptic structure mentioned earlier, the

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind By Michel Gondry
Imagine living in a world where erasing memories of the past was just a night's sleep and a click of
a button; would you take advantage of this opportunity? In the film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless
Mind, directed by Michel Gondry, Joel Barish and Clementine Kruczynski did. The two ended their
relationship on a bad note which lead Clem to impulsively arrange an operation to zap that memory
away. Joel did the same, but instead of letting go of Clem during his operation, he fell back in love
with her; with this realization, his character developed throughout the film which reflects the color
and mood of each scene and point of his life; Joel in the beginning, Clementine, Joel and
Clementine together, and when Joel and Clementine broke up. Off the bat Joel's bedroom set the
mood to what kind of character he was. Much can be taken from the light that shined into the
bedroom, which felt cold and gloomy; it wasn't a bright, morning sunshine; it was gray. This soft
and dreary lighting was purposely muted to push the mood of depression and loneliness by
reflecting Joel's mood as he starts his day ("Technical Critique of 'Eternal...'"). Everything inside the
room felt cold as well; most of the furniture in his room was shades of neutral colors of blacks,
browns, grays, whites and muted blues. Even Joel's choice of clothing from his navy–blue pajamas
to his ebony, black coat reflected the colors of his room and mood. Joel's depression is very
transparent in the beginning scene.

A Brief Look at Walmart
'Wally world' also known as Walmart, is a corporate retail store that has made a major impact in
people lives in the United States and even around the world. Wal–Mart is a great place to shop for
variety of products in short time or just to go 'window shopping' with a group of friends. The items
are well organized throughout the store where you can see signs of the departments within the store.
Another advantage of Walmart is its low price. Wal–Mart supports slogans like "We sell for less"
and "Always on low price". As a large retail company, they have prices that are lower than local
stores in your neighborhood and they are certain that one could save money by shopping at Walmart.
Yet, Walmart has the tendency to be crowded, especially on the weekends that can make a shopping
trip longer than it needs to be. Even with the large parking lot, it seems like full every time I visited
Wal–Mart. However, when I do find a spot to park my car, a camera on a light post is already
watching me before I even walk in the store. Once I walk out my car and lock it, I can see cameras
all over the parking lot as I make my way into the store. Furthermore, I can see a security guard
riding around in a patrol car within the parking lot. As I enter Walmart, an employee welcomes me
to the store while I pass through metal detectors and officially enter the store. Cameras on every isle

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind Narrative Analysis
Kami Naughton Professor Chris Cooling Introduction to Film 21 September 2015 Eternal Sunshine
of the Spotless Mind Narrative Analysis Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry found the perfect,
fragmented form to simulate memories in the non–linear storyline of Eternal Sunshine of the
Spotless Mind (2004). The thematic elements of the film helps this simplistic story of love found,
lost, and found again develop into a complex pattern, much like the workings of the brain. Each
character is everything you would expect them to be in real life – down to earth, imperfect, and
hopelessly searching for the love someone can only dream of. We can relate to them because we all
long for more than we are, and want the best of us to be shown to someone else. Memories make up
who we are, they define us. Life teaches us lessons which shape our memories, and in turn, we learn
from them. What if those memories were gone? Are we still destined to be the same person? The
protagonist of the movie is Joel, and the story surrounds his relationship with Clementine. The
antagonist can be seen as Patrick, who tries to destroy their relationship, or Lacuna Inc., whose
purpose is to make them forget their relationship. Charlie Kaufman has created a beautiful story that
incorporates so many valuable forms in cinema, and leaves viewers on the edge of their seat until
the very end. My goal is the show the class concepts of this narrative, as well as demonstrate how

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind provides a good example of the possibility of presenting
philosophical concepts in a fictional feature film. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind is science
fiction based romantic and comedy film written by Charlie Kaufman and is directed by Michel
Gondry. The film is based on romance and mainly the scientific aspect to explore and flourish the
nature of the human memory. The film was presented to the viewers in March 2004. The film is
made closer to originality, something like troubling memories forgotten by the mind of the person
but still it is some where in memory. Sometimes we are concentrated on everlasting thoughts in our
minds when we are alone and making assumptions about matter, the film is based on such
phenomenon and is a great piece of art.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a movie primarily about two lovers namely Joel Barish and
Clementine Kruczynski. Joel, wakes up on Valentine's Day, skips work, takes a train to Montauk,
and meets Clementine. In this film Joel, a soloist meets a girl namely clementine who needs
carefulness and love but their relationship ended when Joel came to know that she had erased him
from her memory. Joel became sad after being aware of the situation, he was desperate and finally
came to a logical solution to forget her and then he removed her from his mind as well. Joel and
Clementine incidentally met again in a train and immediately drawn to each

Spotless Mind Themes
Joshua Hawkins Dr. Gould Masterpieces of Film October 23rd, 2014 Eternal Sunshine of the
Spotless Mind: A Critical Essay In an almost Tarantino–esque fashion, the film starts out in a non–
linear sequence. Somewhere near the middle end of the story Joel and Clementine, played by Jim
Carrey and Kate Winslet respectively, begin to fall in love. Unbeknownst to them, it is not the first
time they have met, and also not the first time they have fallen in love. The film explores many
aspects of love and its associated emotions, many of which are pain and unhappiness. Whether or
not the characters relationship is based on love, is one thing. However, the flaw in the relationship is
not so much about a love or lack thereof, but rather an immediate desire for happiness. It is only at
the end, once Joel and Clementine realize that they will not be happy with each other, that they
change their perception of the relationship, and simply go for it. Likely a stride in love, their fire is
rekindled. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His desire for love is over–shadowed by his desire for happiness. As a result, everything he tries to
latch onto slips through his hands. Sylvie makes the point clear when she says, "Sand is a motif
through the film, symbolizing the way in which Joel's memories are slipping through his hand".
Taking this a step further, it is not only his memories which fade, but also his immediate desires. No
longer is Joel consumed with thoughts of himself being happy, but rather with the idea that he and
Clementine are meant to be in love. When the revelation of their actions occurs and both parties are
aware that they decided to erase each other, they decide to persevere through. It may not be logical,
but there is a level of commitment that trumps that immediate desire to be happy. They finally
understand the reality that they will eventually be at odds yet they choose to take the plunge into that

Film Analysis: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Michel Gondry's 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, deals with themes of memory,
identity and love. The film focuses on a lonely man named Joel Barish and his progressively
dysfunctional relationship with Clementine Kruczynski. As their relationship deteriorates, they both
decide individually to get the memories of each other erased from their minds at Lacuna Inc.
Throughout the film, Joel demonstrates to the viewer, that although he is thoroughly unhappy, he
begins to regret his agreement to the procedure and desperately tries to cling onto the happiest
moments of his life. The scene directly before the sequence I have chosen is a memory of the first
and only time that Joel was so happy he could "die right now"; lying on the ... Show more content

This removal of Clementine introduces the idea of there being a controller of the deletion of his
memories, taking her away from him after one of the happiest points in his life. The viewer is next
shown a mid shot of Joel looking regretful in the darkness and lying on the ice of the frozen Charles.
Joel voices his emotions saying, "I wanna call it off" as he looks upwards. It next cuts to a bird's eye
or God's view shot looking down upon him. Here, Joel shows his hope in that the God–like Lacuna
workers can hear him by saying, "I'll give you a sign!" Here, Joel is on his knees and he scrunches
his face in silent prayer in hope that the procedure does not carry on. The bird's eye view and a
profile shot of Joel switches a number of times to form a conversation–like event but only this time,
when he says "I don't want this anymore, I wanna call it off!" Joel is pleading and no one is listening
or caring, which is shown through the empty echo of his last words. The ignorance of the Lacuna
technicians is shown next, through a cut to a one shot of Joel in bed. Here he is hooked up to the
memory deletion device and the camera tilts to a mid shot of the two Lacuna employees, Mary and
Stan, drunkenly dancing in their underwear to The Willowz's "Something". This shot establishes
where Joel really is – conscious in his dreams, but not actually being paid attention to. The pair

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: From Alexander Pope to Michel Gondry Eternal Sunshine of
the Spotless Mind is a movie that shot by Michel Gondry in 2004. The movie has science–fictional
elements, although it is a low–budget production. The scenario of the movie is written by Charlie
Kauffman, based on the poem Eloisa to Abelard (1717) by Alexander Pope. In this essay, I will
analyze the movie adaptation of the poem Eloisa to Abelard as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless

The most important similarity is that the heroine of the story, Clementine, believes that if she can
forget the memory of her beloved one, she can continue to her life. But this creates the main
difference in the same time. Because rather than the main character of the movie, the foil character
Mary Svevo's choice exemplifies the poem's main character's words better. She experiences a
relationship with the head of the Lacuna Inc. Dr. Mierzwiak and she accepts the procedure to forget
the relationship in order to goes on her life. We hear the important lines of the poem from her. She

In class we discussed Jackson Pollock's work of art. The importance of Pollock numbering his
paintings is that it's not a representation of a phenomenon. Alternatively, it's the phenomenon, that's
produced by the interactions that take place in the painting arrangement. Pertaining to the
filmmaker's progression, Lucy shows Henry her art studio that's made up of some nonrealistic pieces
of Henry. One image she drew reveals a man's figure, but the head is an egg. As the audience, we
know the painting symbolizes Henry, but the main point is the illustration's composition process.

An Individual Detailed Analysis on the Style, Editing...
An individual detailed analysis on the style, editing techniques Mise–en–scene and cinematography
in the film "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind". Michael Gondry's Eternal sunshine of the
spotless mind (2004) is not your typical Hollywood rom–com. Its cinematic style is very original
and by far out of the ordinary for its genre. The use of techniques and the way the film is produced
is the reason why it is so memorable. The non–linear narrative is based around a middle–aged guy
who falls in love with a woman, who, after a while into their relationship decides to erase every
single memory and feeling towards him. The story is told in flashbacks that slowly reveal the time
and space the couple spent together and all the events that made ... Show more content on

There are plenty of examples of continuity editing in Eternal sunshine, both temporal and spatial are
used. Discontinuity is used throughout the memory erasing scenes with the deliberate use of ellipsis
as Joel relives his memories in flashbacks. Some of the shots from Joel's memories are put together
in a montage edit; this is another example of discontinuity editing. There are multiple uses of
crosscutting in the film, which is when there are a series of shots that keep cutting back and forth
from one shot to another shot, this occurs in a lot of the flashback scenes. Also there are several
jump cuts, which brakes the "continuity edit" as in order to achieve a smooth and non–noticeable cut
from one shot to another the camera must move 30 degrees or more to attain the continuity in the
movement of shots. But a jump cut is deliberately shot without using the 30–degree rule. Therefore
when you put the shots together they make a "jump" affect and it brakes up the continuity of the
edit. In this case, Gondry intentionally directed the crosscutting and jump cuts in order to express
Joel's reactions to the procedure. At the beginning of the film the editing picks up a rhythm and runs
smoothly, giving a perfect example of continuity editing, but as the film goes on it begins to switch
between continuity and discontinuity as the edit balances

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind Essay
Throughout our class this semester we learned about all different views of free will and happiness
by several different philosophers. In this paper I will be speaking of the relations between a film and
two sections we read. The film is the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and excerpts are from
The Good Life by Charles Guignon including Rousseau's theories on happiness, and Sarte's theories
of free will that all inter relate.
In The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind a very meek Joel and the crazy Clementine start a
relationship on a train across New York. They seem to be drawn to each other despite that they have
basically opposite personalities. They both do not know it at the time but Joel and Clementine
actually used to date. They are now broken up but had spent two years together. After their last
argument, Clementine hires a service to erase all of her memories of their relationship. When Joel
figures this out he is devastated and in turn decides to do the same. However, for Joel to complete
this process he is forced to go through all of their memories and he changes his mind about the
procedure. He tries to cease the process by hiding Clementine in hidden parts of his unconscious. In
Joel's last memory they agree to meet in Montauk and they meet again and start to fall in love ...

Applying the Concept of Bipower to China's One Child Policy
Michel Foucault was a French philosopher and one of the most influential social theorists of the
second half of the twentieth century. He was born on the 15th of October 1936 and passed away on
the 25th June 1984. His theories addressed the relationship between power and knowledge, and how
they are used as a form of social control. His analysis breaks the concept of power apart, and his
theory explains differences in various modes of power. In his study the History of Sexuality, he
explores in the firth volume called Right of Death and Power over Life the triangle of power: (I)
sovereign power; (II) disciplinary power; and (III) biopower. In this essay I will describe the
relationship between each power and apply the concept of biopower to China's one child Policy.
First what is Biopower? Well according to Foucault, biopower is a technology of power, which is a
way of managing and controlling entire populations. Biopower led to the emergence of the modern
nation state and capitalism. Foucault describes it as "an explosion of numerous and diverse
techniques for achieving the subjugations of bodies and the control of populations" (Foucault 140).
The primary and most important goal of biopower is life. The government goal is to secure and
improve people's lives. Power is exercised exclusively over life, and is exercised either to foster life
or to disallow it. Biopower according to Foucault is a power that "exerts a positive influence on life,
that endeavours to

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind:
An Analysis of Memory, Relationships, and Identity
Jeszenia McGuire
Elms College
What was the worst thing that has ever happened to you? Perhaps you totaled your brand new car
leaving the dealership, or you lost your dream job? Maybe you were bullied as a child, or were the
victim of a crime. Did you go for a routine checkup, only to be told you an expiration date? Maybe
you watched on as a pair of taillights faded into the darkness, as the love of your life left you. Worse
still, maybe you witnessed your best friend's, your parent's, or your child's chest rise and fall for the
last time. Whatever came to your mind when I asked you the worst event of your life, remember
that. Recall that emptiness, and that crippling pain. Now if I offered you an out, a way to delete that
memory from the depths of your mind, would you take it? In his 2004 romantic comedy, Eternal
Sunshine of the spotless mind, writer Charlie Kaufman explores the complexities of our memories,
relationships, and identities. In doing so, he created arguably one of the most powerful films of the
decade. In the movie we watch as Joel Barish, an overly nervous and reserved man falls in love with
his polar opposite Clementine Kruczynski who is as spontaneous as her vivid and ever–changing
hair color. We get invested in their relationship, as they seem extraordinarily happy; nevertheless,
this happiness doesn't last long, and they go through a tough breakup.

The Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Introduction
The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind is an Oscar winning alternative U.S. film released March
19th 2004(IMDb 2015). It was produced by Focus Features and follows the dysfunctional love story
of Joel and Clementine. The film itself despite being strongly influenced by Hollywood pays
homage to other film movements such as surrealism and Soviet montage. The film in itself was a
struggle to be categorised, thought it has been described as a romance, black comedy and many
others that will later be explored. The director aimed to make this film timeless and still stands to be
as effective today as it was when it was released.
Production
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the brainchild of director Michel Gondry and scriptwriter
Charlie Kaufman. Steve Golin on of the crew on the film was quoted saying 'the two complement
each other. Michel is truly gifted at visualisation. But he also has a lot of soul. Charlie is probably
the most imaginative writer that I've had the opportunity to work with. He creates characters and
situations that are relatable but very unusual – and he also has very visual ideas.' (Dugdale H 2006).
The film itself has utilises rawer filming aspects than a classic Hollywood film. Instead of C.G.I the
film uses camera techniques to make the characters smaller or larger in scale (Dugdale H 2006). The
film itself was categorised under many genres including romance, drama, science fiction, black
comedy, surrealism and realism. The

Flash Of Genius Relates To Intellectual Property
The movie Flash of Genius relates to Intellectual Property in that the intermittent windshield wipers
were Robert Kearns' own intellectual property. The movie has strong ties to patent laws of the
United States as well as the 1941 Supreme Court case of Cuno Engineering v. Automatic Devices
Corp which requires that a new device must "reveal the flash of creative genius, not merely the skill
of the calling" (JUSTIA).The movie relates to this because Ford infringed on Kearns' patent (that
was still under protection) and Kearns claimed to have had a flash of creative genius (why can't a
windshield wiper blink like a human eye?). Because of this flash of genius, he came up with the idea
for the intermittent wiper and it was not merely created as

Existentialism is defined as a philosophy that emphasizes individual existence, freedom, and choice.
It is the view that humans define their own meaning in life, and try to make rational decisions
despite existing in an irrational universe. This school of philosophy has time and time again been
explored in literature and film, as it is the answer to the defining question of the human experience:
why am I here? The doctrine of existentialism is the core theme of the films Synecdoche, New York,
written and directed by Charlie Kauffman, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, directed by
Michel Gondry and written by Charlie Kauffman (who's writing directed the direction and main
theme of the film), the poem, Dover Beach, written by Matthew Arnold, and Franz Kafka's literary
classic and masterpiece, The Trial.
Our first text is Charlie Kauffman's directorial debut, Synecdoche, New York. The postmodern
melodrama attempts to depict every aspect of the human condition, therefore, making the film itself,
a synecdoche of the human experience. For example, in the film, life and art are well and truly
indistinguishable. All the events in the protagonist's (playwright Caden Cotard) life become part of
his impossibly large theatre piece. However, Caden's inconceivable art comes with a revelation. As
Caden continues to try, and ultimately fail to recreate his life and world in an impossible warehouse
it becomes more and more prevalent that he can't, and he never will. This is because real

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind By Michel Gondry Essay
A hollow feeling inside of your chest consumes your body. The room is filled with your sobs and
hiccuped breaths. A million thoughts are racing through your head; none of these are positive. You
tell yourself that you wish you never met them. You plea at the universe to take away all the
memories of them. You beg to never again feel this type of agony. If possible, would you eradicate
the memory of another human?
In the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine
Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) do exactly this. Directed by Michel Gondry, this American romantic
comedy wonderfully expresses the idea that a person's memories are fundamental in human growth.
Through cinematography, lighting, and character development, Gondry successfully directs one of
the best twenty–first–century films.
The cinematography of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind effectively develops the film's plot
and characters. In the beginning of the movie, Joel is shown awaking in a close up. This shot easily
shows the gloomy expression on his face, asking the audience to question why he is upset. Hand
held cameras provide the story with a natural, more realistic feel, inviting the audience into Joel's
memories. The hand held cameras provide the film with an imperfect, human perspective. This can
be viewed primarily in the honeymoon on ice scene. Slight shakes of the camera are evident. In the
scene when Joel and Clementine see each other on the train to Montauk, far

sparkles. This is both the method and madness for Brooklyn's trio, Little Daylight. By fashioning
memorable and jarring pop melodies with confident and engrossing live performances, the
newcomers are carving out their own little slice of sunshine with their debut album, Hello Memory.
"When we first formed, which was the day we started writing 'Hello Memory', the three of us each
dumped our mental baggage onto the table," said guitarist Matt Lewkowicz. What followed was the
slow and arduous process of deciding what worked and what didn't, carefully defining what Little
Daylight would be. "The way that we work is a lot of trimming that goes on." What resulted is an
bombastic album comprised of unforgettable rhythm–oriented melodies punctuated with smartly
arranged layers of synth and guitar. Grounded by Erica Zeiler's sultry vocals, each song is a
carefully calibrating experiment in atmosphere, and it's determined to take you places. The album's

Analysis Of Michael Gondry 's Eternal Sunshine Of The...
Intro: Michael Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Eternal Sunshine) (2004), is a sci–fi
romantic comedy drama film. The film follows Joel Barish and his attempts to forget his ex–
girfriend Clementine Krucynski through a New York City firm called Lacuna inc. which focuses on
memory erasing. The firm uses highly developed technology in order to erase Joel's memories of
Clementine, which ultimately leads Joel to re–meeting Clementine, and attempt to create a new
relationship although the two have knowledge about their previous relationship, yet no memory of
their relationship. As a result, the film highlights the issues of the human memory, and the ethical
concerns of memory manipulation, which gives justifies critical discussion. These themes of
memory and forgetting are highlighted through the films use of lighting, metaphors, and setting.
This essay will attempt to critically analyse several scenes in Eternal Sunshine which discusses
memory and forgetting in relation to several theorists and their interpretation of memory.
Para. 1: Eternal Sunshine's illustration of remembering is one worthy of discussion. Within the film's
mise–en–scene, the use of the constant spotlight throughout the film suggests Joel's attempt to keep
the memories he has of Clemintine. An example of this is when we see Joel trying to hide
Clemintine within his memories. The spotlight within the mise–en–scene of the film illuminates the

The Movie Inside Out

  • 1. The Movie Inside Out Both the movies, Inside Out and Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind focus heavily on memory and the impact that memory has on one's life. The movie Inside Out focuses on how memories and the emotions attached to them can shape us and a our personalities. The movie depicts in animated form the basics of memory, short term memory, long term memory and forgetting. It as shows the idea of mood congruent effect. Mood congruent effect is the idea that you remember memories that were encoded when you were in that same mood easier than when you are in a different mood. That can been seen in Inside Out because when Riley is happy she can recall the happy memories of her family and friends in Minnesota, but when Sadness and Joy get lost in long term memory and Riley is without them, Riley has a much harder time remembering the good things in her life she is only able to see the bad. The idea of mood congruent effect can also be seen in the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, this is seen when Joel's memories of Clementine are being erased, at first they are erasing the negative memories and they go from one negative memory to another with ease, when they finally jump to a happy memory, he jumps from happy memory to happy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Inside Out, it is shown that tubes suck the memory from long term memory to short term memory. The only problem that is shown in the movie with retrieval is memory decay, in the movie this is shown as a dulling of the memory, and eventually the memory is sent to the memory dump where it is forgotten. The concepts of encoding failure and retrieval failure are not shown in the movie. Memory retrieval is depicted in the movie Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind in a very different way. They show memory retrieval through cues from objects, so in the process of erasing the memory of someone from one's mind, one must get rid of everything that might remind them of that person they are ... • 3. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind Essay Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a movie about both the value of memory and, because every sci–fi movie ever has this theme, playing God. Let us focus more on the memory because in my opinion it just more interesting. Joel, after his ex–girlfriend Clementine stops recognizing him, discovers she went to a clinic that allows for a memory to be removed precisely from a person's brain. Devastated, he decides to go to through the same procedure himself. Most of the movie takes place in Joel's mind as his memory is being removed. This movie uses structure in the most interesting way, beginning with a scene fairly far in the film's actual timeline, as Joel and Clementine meet for the second time with their memories erased. The film assaults us with random memories and experiences of Joel and Clementine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The movie's title refers to the poem Eloisa to Abelard, which elements memory and man's loss of innocence of wonder as a consequence of it. As it says in lines 207–210, "How happy is the blameless vestal's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd" The film's goal seems to reject this idea in every sense by showing how the distracted the lack of memory to the least. The film has an overall ton of gloom all throughout it, with a washed out color palette, as if to say, this is what we get by destroying memory. The constantly changing set composition of anyone who is in the film serves to portray Joel's ruthlessness. The fractured and repeated dialogue conveys Clementine herself becoming fractured, a key piece of dialogue here is "I'm lost, I'm scared, I feel like I'm disappearing." As we see, Clementine's identity is being taken with her memory. The director doesn't stop by saying we need memory to be stable, he goes on to say, without memory we are destined to repeat our ... • 5. `` Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind `` By Charlie... Cinematic Styles in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind The film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 2004, written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry, deviates from conventional film by using not only naturalistic elements but elements of surrealism as well. The film has many conventional elements that make it enjoyable to watch for many people, and for it to have mainstream. The surrealism elements give the film a unique perspective on a romantic plot, and makes the scenes visually exciting. Even though the other film styles are used, the narrative is definitely naturalistic at its core, despite its use of other film styles. Overall, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a film that is partly conventional, surreal and naturalistic in both its narrative and its visual elements. The film tells the story of a couple who deals with their breakup by erasing their memories of each other through a medical procedure that eliminates specific parts of someone's memory. The filmmakers go about this with the use of editing that tells the story of their relationship from the start until the moment when they both decide they no longer can be together. The film is edited in a way that makes scenes that are typically realistic become surreal in order to show how even under extreme circumstances the couples fate is beyond their control. This start to the movie puts the audience in a position of a voyeur in Joel and Clementine relationship, which in the opening scene ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Film Analysis of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Essay In Michael Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), the connections between people and memories become the focal point of a very unique romance. Through the use of new technology, the possibility of erasing memories makes painful relationships disappear like they never happened. The tale of Joel and Clementine allows the audience to rethink and question the process they undergo as beneficial or destructive. Though the process might be helpful in eliminating the pain caused from another person, four key scenes show how the lessons learned through relationship experiences are important. At the start of the film, Joel Barish (Jim Carey) finds himself waking up in the morning from what appears to have been a deep sleep. With a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though Joel is very nervous and unsure about walking out onto the frozen river, Clementine runs and slides past him. After falling and getting up, she then pressures Joel to step out of his comfort zone and to walk out onto the ice. At this point, the outing becomes more than just a part of a romantic date, but also a new experience for Joel. While Joel is normally quiet and to himself about everything, this outing made him get out of his comfort zone and do something he otherwise wouldn't even think to do. With this being a new experience for him to loosen up and have some fun, such a lesson could provide him a change of pace from the dull and boring routine of his normal life. Another scene in the movie is the fight between Clementine and Joel. Joel is sitting at home worried late one night when Clementine shows up at three in the morning tipsy. She tells Joel that she wrecked his car, which upsets Joel. He begins letting his emotions get the best of him and fires off by telling her how she was being irresponsible and could have seriously injured someone. Responding to the criticism, Clementine tells Joel he sounds like an old lady. The small argument grows larger as the two begin throwing low blows targeting each other's insecurities. At this point, Clementine quickly grabs her things and leaves. Having a dispute with someone is a part of life. • 9. Essay about Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Our memories change the way in which we see the world The idea that our memories change the way on which we see the world and ultimately change reality is a difficult one to understand. An answer to this question depends on the way we define reality. If we define reality as objective– then it can not be altered by memories. However if we define reality as subjective, then, yes, our memories can affect our reality. But what do we mean by memories? What do we mean by relationship? What follows is an attempt to answer some of these questions, and see whether and how our memories affect our reality. Before considering whether or not memories affect our reality, it may be useful to offer a definition of the term 'reality'. If we are to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many other people have been in similar situations which have taught them a 'life lesson'. In Gondry and Kaufman's Eternal Sunshine, Dr Howard Mierzwiak knew of the power of memories. He went about erasing people's memories without telling them the full consciences of their actions; like Joel who midway through the erasing process realised he wanted to keep them, his life afterwards was different as he didn't have his memories of Clementine to remind him of what love felt like. Our memories strongly shape our perception of events. In the popular culture film Vantage Point each character has a different perspective due to their memories. It shows six different perspectives of the same event, the attempted assassination of the President while greeting a crowd in Salamanca, Spain before his speech. Soon after several bombs go off in the surrounding area and many people are hurt. Each person who witnessed this event had a different view. GNN TV producer Rex Brooks was busy delegating tasks to his workers when the shot was fired his reality instantly changed when he saw his reporter lying lifeless on the ground after the explosions. This made him realise that this event was going to affect his future. Thomas Barnes a secret service agent also saw the assassination attempt and recognised the reality that people were in danger and that he had the ability to help due to his training. • 11. Essay Comparing Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind And... "The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind" and "Crow Lake" resemble a theme of regret. In the "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", Clementine erased Joel from her memory, as a result, this affected Joel mentally as he felt the need to do the same out of anger. Although, as he was undergoing the procedure, he started to regret his decision once he realizes how much he cherished and appreciated the memories of their relationship. Joel also realizes the mistakes he made throughout the relationship while encountering them again. Similarly in Crow Lake, Kate felt regret for Matt that he should have went to university to get a higher education with a well–payed job to achieve a good life–style. She felt that Matt had missed a very life changing opportunity that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another theme that is present in both works of literature is memories. In "The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind", Joel wanted to forget his memories with Clementine, but he soon realized that he cherished those memories and did not want to lose them. As a result, he tried to hide them in his childhood memories from the machine detecting them in his mind. Similarly in Crow Lake, Kate tried to hide her childhood memories from Daniel as she did not want Daniel to know any part of her past life. Interaction was also an important theme in both works. In "The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind", Joel was not able to state his feelings clearly to Clementine. He wrote thoughts in a journal that he kept. Though, Clementine supported him when he felt sad or alone. This showed that if Joel had opened up about his feelings to Clementine, his emotions that he wanted to express so eagerly would not have built up inside him. Similarly in Crow Lake, Kate kept her feelings about Daniel to herself because she felt that if she got too emotionally attached to Daniel, she would end up losing him just like she lost her ... • 13. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind "I try to learn from both, from features and documentaries. In both cases you have to find a way to make the camera as discreet as possible, and flexible enough to be able to capture the moment when it happens. I know from documentary how to not have a preconceived idea of what the scene could be". – Michel Gondry As this quote from French film director Michel Gondry suggests, the ability of a director to create a film that hides the camera and the construction of a film remains difficult. In his 2004 film, Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, Gondry utilizes the full potential of the film medium, to express his own unique visual style. He has a number of films that he has directed such as Human Nature, which was also written by scriptwriter Charlie Kaufman. Both Gondry and Kaufman have worked in collaboration for a number of years, which has earnt them huge acclaim for their successes in creating huge box office hits that were created on minimal budgets. IMBD states that the production budget for the film was 20 million dollars with a further 10 million set aside for the marketing budget. In addition to this, Gondry has cemented his own visual style as a director as "there is always a battle with time, but not usually in terms of beating deadlines" (Dzialo, 2009: 107). This essay will analyze the style of the film, the narrative construction within the film, generic features and key concepts and the idea of personal style through the auteur. • 15. The Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind By Charlie Kaufman Bianca Rincon ENGL 300: Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry, immerses viewers in a space of artistic expression from one scene to the next. Manipulating light and color in its filmic style, it stamps the viewer's ticket and takes them on an emotional roller coaster ride, capturing the same distortion that Joel feels in his life and mind as he undergoes a procedure and loses his memory. Deftly, the film captures the effects of the memory erasing procedure by drawing readers into the subjective world held in Joel's mind. Cinematography, editing, and mise–en–scene work together to create a space where the audience can feel the emotion provoked by the characters and narrative in an incredibly genuine way, hand–held cameras used to further highlight this effect. The film follows Joel Barish and his relationship with Clementine Kruczynski, passionate but highly dysfunctional in nature. The film stretches over a couple of years, showing both its peak and nadir, leading to the end of their relationship. Joel, hurt and perplexed, realizes that Clementine has undergone a memory erasing procedure at Lacuna in an endeavor to erase any trace or memory of Joel. Upset, he finds the doctor and demands the same operations. Trapped in his mind, he relives memories as they are erased and realizes the importance of his past, his relationship with Clementine, and what that means to him. Joel ... • 17. Spotless Mind Themes There are moments in a person's life when she wishes she there was a way to remove unpleasant memories forever, to forget either that person responsible of a heartbreak, or a loved one who died recently, or a traumatic event; however, what would happen if there was a process capable of deleting someone's painful memories? Would a person be the same after the procedure? And most important, is a person condemned to repeat their past if they don't remember it? Charlie Kaufman's 2004 script, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, tries to give some insight into these questions by using philosophical themes such as memory and its connection to personal identity, determinism, and existentialism. Indeterminism is the belief that chance, rather than fate, is the determining factor in the outcomes of one's life. In the case of Joel and Clementine it could be argue that it's incredible unbelievable that the only shard remaining of Clementine in Joel's mind was "Meet me in Montauk" and nothing else. • 19. Eternal Sunshine Belonging I remember writing a speech in English class in high school about human behavior on happiness. In this paper I wrote, "I think we spend too much time contemplative on the undesirable certainties of our past and we become so blinded by all the good things that are happening around us." The song Eternal Sunshine is written by Jhenè Aiko; in this song she reaches out for something more intimate like disturbing memories hidden deep within her mind. This specific music video takes you through a series of events from Jhenè's past, stressing the presence of thoughts we put aside when surrounded by people, things we only think about when we are in a dark place in life, and concealed in eternal thoughts. Throughout the video, Jhenè's body is arising from the ground while her potentially fatal car accident is vividly reenacted behind her along with good remembrances from her childhood. Though Jhenè Aiko is usually speaking about love and weed that does not infer that she has not had her fair stake of pain within her personal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By this being the introduction to Jhenè's music video, it instantly sets the mood and emotions for the audience. It was a great introduction to the movie because it made wonder what was going to happen next. Before the video I had no clue this incident ever occurred in her life. With Aiko singing, "Is it strange for me to say that if I were to die today, there's not a thing that I would change. I've lived well," she implies that everything happens for a ... • 21. The Spotless Mind Next I will start discussing the ethical issues represented in the other film 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.' This film deals with the ethical implications concerning memory loss. In the film, Joel and Clementine, who are ex–lovers, remove memories of each other. If you could erase someone from your life, would you? The act of erasing a person's memory appears at first so highly unethical, even when the characters in the film have actually requested for it. The early stages of the film suggests, however, that Joel and Clementine's relationship were not working out well, and so they eventually chose to wipe it off from their memories for their own happiness. According to utilitarianism, by which an act is ethical as long as it maximizes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kant's categorical imperative states two main points: to act out of duty, and to never use people as a means. Although all people are given the freedom to make their own choices, removing our memories actually limits our own freedom, and is the same as living a lie. The film suggests that to remember does not solely imply the retainment of a memory, but it also includes taking responsibility for one's own actions ("for my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to the know the worst, and to provide for it" (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 2004). Kant states that persons, as rationale agents, have a capacity for freedom and dignity, and deserve respect. However, in the film, through memory removal, the value of truth gets distorted and leads the characters to actually reject themselves. What makes this self– objectification ironic is that this is the consequence of the procedure that had been self–consented. What makes this even more contradictory is that they are using their own rights and freedom to actually limit their freedom – which under Kant's rationale is considered problematic. There is an obvious lack of self–respect in the film as everyone is characterized by self–destruction: Joel's depression, Clementine's alcoholism, and Mary's insecurity, which are all self–harming activities. The unethical issue of memory removal in the film is also derived from the very nature of the technology itself, as it is portrayed as misguided and dangerous. The people who actually prescribe the procedure also seem to have no respect for the value of memory, and the possible consequences that might follow. Thus, Kantianism, in direct contrast to Utilitarianism, would not consent to the memory removal procedure in the film no matter what the reason is or the consequences that ... Joel's Imaginary Actions: Spotlighting in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind While music always plays a significant part to convey emotions in film, light can be used just as effectively. The use of a special lighting technique is very noticeable in the memory scenes of Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. A major part of Eternal Sunshine is spent inside the protagonist Joel's mind. He is in the process of deleting his memory of Clementine, who was his girlfriend for two years. Two main lighting styles are used throughout the scenes which play inside Joel's mind. On one hand, natural bright lighting and on the other hand a darker setting with only one light source, carrying a strong resemblance of a spotlight (Jason Sperb, ... Both Joel and Clementine first walk through a house party and end up in Mierzwiak's clinic. There, Joel starts talking to Mierzwiak who is in turn talking to another version of Joel. This other version of Joel is part of the memory and does not react to the Joel we are following around. However, Mierzwiak acknowledges the Joel who enters the memory and starts talking to him. This whole scene is only lit by one spotlight moving back and forth in a tracking shot between the three characters. (Eternal Sunshine, 55:59–56:44) It is again, an event which has not happened in real life, but is just part of Joel's imagination. This could not have been the way Joel perceives this specific memory, as Sperb called it, as Mierzwiak is saying things which would not make sense in the real–life scenario. • 25. Analysis Of The Movie ' The Spotless Mind ' Essay Bitter Nepenthe Friedrich Nietzsche once said, "blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even of their blunders." We always think that forgetting is the solution to our misery. We indulge in the idea that ignorance is bliss and that what we don't remember won't hurt us. But do we really get the better of our mistakes if we forget about them? Do forgetting and ignorance make us better people? Does oblivion make us happier? Is it worth going out of our way to make sure we forget? These are the kinds of questions Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind addresses. Even though it is one of those movies which grapples with immense philosophical concepts, it does so effortlessly and without seeming elitist or pretentious. In this romance–science–fiction–comedy hybrid Charlie Kaufman 's amazing script as well as Michel Gondry 's whimsical direction captivate us. As is the case with every Kaufman film, the movie discusses the consequences of tampering with human nature in the light of human fallibility and memories. However, Eternal Sunshine has a remarkable essence in that the burning issue at its heart is whether your life is merely a predestined route to an inevitable destination. While the film has traces of science–fiction conventions, Gondry's signature downplaying of special effects and producing the captivating frames directly during shooting (through removing or adding objects to the set between shots) ensures that the viewer does not get too overwhelmed by the ... Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind is a very intriguing movie that explores many dimensions of relationships ups and down. The creative genius behind this production is Michel Gondry, a very cleverly written script by Charlie Kaufman and the cherry on the top performance by Jim Carey and Kate Winslet. Although this film has been widely raved about by film critics, there are still many who find this movie rather confusing or boring. However, this film has formed a cult–like fan base that has devoted their time and energy into understanding and analysing this film. This paper will further analyse this film through different aspects such as the directors style and influence, the film style, narrative construction, generic features of the film, symbolism and others. The Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind ventures into the world of relationships. This movie is a combination of several genres including drama, romance, surrealism, realism and also elements of science fiction. Joel Barish and Clementine Kruczynski were both in a very complicated relationship for the span of two years which eventually led to their break up. Shattered by their break up, Clementine undergoes a procedure to remove every memory of their relationship from her mind. Before Foucault addresses his theory, Panopticism, he first explains Jeremy Bentham's architectural structure, the Panopticon. Foucault explains the Panopticon structure is "at the periphery, an annular building; at the center, a tower" (184). Essentially, this means that there is a larger tower in the center, which is completed surrounded by individual cells. These cells have both a window facing the tower and one facing away; this allows light to shine through the windows making the prisoner completely visible. Combined with making a prisoner visible, some type of superior must be in the tower periodically to ensure the feeling of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In conjunction self–policing, the panoptic structure and Panopticism are useful for "drawing up differences" between people (190). Due to the fact that each of the prisoners are enclosed in their own isolated cell, their different tempers, aptitudes, and several other personality traits can be analyzed without the fear of imitation from viewing other inmates behaving differently. I will be utilizing Foucault's theory of Panopticism to analyze my experiences in a nursing home that has the same structural design as panoptic structure. The nursing home that I am reflecting my experience from resembles a panoptic structure because there is a central nurse's station surrounded by individual resident rooms and a common gathering space. The nurse's station and the necessary staff rooms are at the center of the unit, similar to the central tower. This is the command center for information about the resident's behavior and any change in their medical or temperamental status. Ultimately, this is where the power source is situated. Conversely, this makes the resident's rooms similar to cells and the residents inside, comparable to prisoners. In each resident room there is almost everything the resident would need such as a bathroom, clothes, and various personal items. Like a prisoner in the panoptic structure mentioned earlier, the ... Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind By Michel Gondry Imagine living in a world where erasing memories of the past was just a night's sleep and a click of a button; would you take advantage of this opportunity? In the film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, directed by Michel Gondry, Joel Barish and Clementine Kruczynski did. The two ended their relationship on a bad note which lead Clem to impulsively arrange an operation to zap that memory away. Joel did the same, but instead of letting go of Clem during his operation, he fell back in love with her; with this realization, his character developed throughout the film which reflects the color and mood of each scene and point of his life; Joel in the beginning, Clementine, Joel and Clementine together, and when Joel and Clementine broke up. Off the bat Joel's bedroom set the mood to what kind of character he was. Much can be taken from the light that shined into the bedroom, which felt cold and gloomy; it wasn't a bright, morning sunshine; it was gray. This soft and dreary lighting was purposely muted to push the mood of depression and loneliness by reflecting Joel's mood as he starts his day ("Technical Critique of 'Eternal...'"). Everything inside the room felt cold as well; most of the furniture in his room was shades of neutral colors of blacks, browns, grays, whites and muted blues. Even Joel's choice of clothing from his navy–blue pajamas to his ebony, black coat reflected the colors of his room and mood. Joel's depression is very transparent in the beginning scene. ... Wal–Mart is a great place to shop for variety of products in short time or just to go 'window shopping' with a group of friends. The items are well organized throughout the store where you can see signs of the departments within the store. Another advantage of Walmart is its low price. Wal–Mart supports slogans like "We sell for less" and "Always on low price". As a large retail company, they have prices that are lower than local stores in your neighborhood and they are certain that one could save money by shopping at Walmart. Yet, Walmart has the tendency to be crowded, especially on the weekends that can make a shopping trip longer than it needs to be. • 35. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind Narrative Analysis Kami Naughton Professor Chris Cooling Introduction to Film 21 September 2015 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Narrative Analysis Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry found the perfect, fragmented form to simulate memories in the non–linear storyline of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). The thematic elements of the film helps this simplistic story of love found, lost, and found again develop into a complex pattern, much like the workings of the brain. Each character is everything you would expect them to be in real life – down to earth, imperfect, and hopelessly searching for the love someone can only dream of. We can relate to them because we all long for more than we are, and want the best of us to be shown to someone else. Memories make up who we are, they define us. Life teaches us lessons which shape our memories, and in turn, we learn from them. What if those memories were gone? Are we still destined to be the same person? The protagonist of the movie is Joel, and the story surrounds his relationship with Clementine. The antagonist can be seen as Patrick, who tries to destroy their relationship, or Lacuna Inc., whose purpose is to make them forget their relationship. Charlie Kaufman has created a beautiful story that incorporates so many valuable forms in cinema, and leaves viewers on the edge of their seat until the very end. My goal is the show the class concepts of this narrative, as well as demonstrate how the way the film's story is told ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind provides a good example of the possibility of presenting philosophical concepts in a fictional feature film. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind is science fiction based romantic and comedy film written by Charlie Kaufman and is directed by Michel Gondry. The film is based on romance and mainly the scientific aspect to explore and flourish the nature of the human memory. The film was presented to the viewers in March 2004. The film is made closer to originality, something like troubling memories forgotten by the mind of the person but still it is some where in memory. Sometimes we are concentrated on everlasting thoughts in our minds when we are alone and making assumptions about matter, the film is based on such phenomenon and is a great piece of art. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a movie primarily about two lovers namely Joel Barish and Clementine Kruczynski. Joel, wakes up on Valentine's Day, skips work, takes a train to Montauk, and meets Clementine. In this film Joel, a soloist meets a girl namely clementine who needs carefulness and love but their relationship ended when Joel came to know that she had erased him from her memory. Spotless Mind Themes Joshua Hawkins Dr. Gould Masterpieces of Film October 23rd, 2014 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: A Critical Essay In an almost Tarantino–esque fashion, the film starts out in a non– linear sequence. Somewhere near the middle end of the story Joel and Clementine, played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet respectively, begin to fall in love. Unbeknownst to them, it is not the first time they have met, and also not the first time they have fallen in love. The film explores many aspects of love and its associated emotions, many of which are pain and unhappiness. Whether or not the characters relationship is based on love, is one thing. However, the flaw in the relationship is not so much about a love or lack thereof, but rather an immediate desire for happiness. It is only at the end, once Joel and Clementine realize that they will not be happy with each other, that they change their perception of the relationship, and simply go for it. Likely a stride in love, their fire is rekindled. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His desire for love is over–shadowed by his desire for happiness. As a result, everything he tries to latch onto slips through his hands. Sylvie makes the point clear when she says, "Sand is a motif through the film, symbolizing the way in which Joel's memories are slipping through his hand". Taking this a step further, it is not only his memories which fade, but also his immediate desires. No longer is Joel consumed with thoughts of himself being happy, but rather with the idea that he and Clementine are meant to be in love. When the revelation of their actions occurs and both parties are aware that they decided to erase each other, they decide to persevere through. It may not be logical, but there is a level of commitment that trumps that immediate desire to be happy. It next cuts to a bird's eye or God's view shot looking down upon him. Here, Joel shows his hope in that the God–like Lacuna workers can hear him by saying, "I'll give you a sign!" Here, Joel is on his knees and he scrunches his face in silent prayer in hope that the procedure does not carry on. The bird's eye view and a profile shot of Joel switches a number of times to form a conversation–like event but only this time, when he says "I don't want this anymore, I wanna call it off!" Joel is pleading and no one is listening or caring, which is shown through the empty echo of his last words. The ignorance of the Lacuna technicians is shown next, through a cut to a one shot of Joel in bed. Here he is hooked up to the memory deletion device and the camera tilts to a mid shot of the two Lacuna employees, Mary and Stan, drunkenly dancing in their underwear to The Willowz's "Something". Michael Gondry's Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (2004) is not your typical Hollywood rom–com. Its cinematic style is very original and by far out of the ordinary for its genre. There are plenty of examples of continuity editing in Eternal sunshine, both temporal and spatial are used. Discontinuity is used throughout the memory erasing scenes with the deliberate use of ellipsis as Joel relives his memories in flashbacks. Some of the shots from Joel's memories are put together in a montage edit; this is another example of discontinuity editing. There are multiple uses of crosscutting in the film, which is when there are a series of shots that keep cutting back and forth from one shot to another shot, this occurs in a lot of the flashback scenes. Also there are several jump cuts, which brakes the "continuity edit" as in order to achieve a smooth and non–noticeable cut from one shot to another the camera must move 30 degrees or more to attain the continuity in the movement of shots. But a jump cut is deliberately shot without using the 30–degree rule. Therefore when you put the shots together they make a "jump" affect and it brakes up the continuity of the edit. In this case, Gondry intentionally directed the crosscutting and jump cuts in order to express Joel's reactions to the procedure. At the beginning of the film the editing picks up a rhythm and runs smoothly, giving a perfect example of continuity editing, but as the film goes on it begins to switch between continuity and discontinuity as the edit balances ... When Joel figures this out he is devastated and in turn decides to do the same. His analysis breaks the concept of power apart, and his theory explains differences in various modes of power. In his study the History of Sexuality, he explores in the firth volume called Right of Death and Power over Life the triangle of power: (I) sovereign power; (II) disciplinary power; and (III) biopower. In this essay I will describe the relationship between each power and apply the concept of biopower to China's one child Policy. First what is Biopower? Well according to Foucault, biopower is a technology of power, which is a way of managing and controlling entire populations. Biopower led to the emergence of the modern nation state and capitalism. Foucault describes it as "an explosion of numerous and diverse techniques for achieving the subjugations of bodies and the control of populations" (Foucault 140). The primary and most important goal of biopower is life. The government goal is to secure and improve people's lives. Power is exercised exclusively over life, and is exercised either to foster life or to disallow it. Automatic Devices Corp which requires that a new device must "reveal the flash of creative genius, not merely the skill of the calling" (JUSTIA).The movie relates to this because Ford infringed on Kearns' patent (that was still under protection) and Kearns claimed to have had a flash of creative genius (why can't a windshield wiper blink like a human eye?). Because of this flash of genius, he came up with the idea for the intermittent wiper and it was not merely created as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is the view that humans define their own meaning in life, and try to make rational decisions despite existing in an irrational universe. This school of philosophy has time and time again been explored in literature and film, as it is the answer to the defining question of the human experience: why am I here? The doctrine of existentialism is the core theme of the films Synecdoche, New York, written and directed by Charlie Kauffman, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, directed by Michel Gondry and written by Charlie Kauffman (who's writing directed the direction and main theme of the film), the poem, Dover Beach, written by Matthew Arnold, and Franz Kafka's literary classic and masterpiece, The Trial. Our first text is Charlie Kauffman's directorial debut, Synecdoche, New York. The postmodern melodrama attempts to depict every aspect of the human condition, therefore, making the film itself, a synecdoche of the human experience. For example, in the film, life and art are well and truly indistinguishable. All the events in the protagonist's (playwright Caden Cotard) life become part of his impossibly large theatre piece. However, Caden's inconceivable art comes with a revelation. As Caden continues to try, and ultimately fail to recreate his life and world in an impossible warehouse it becomes more and more prevalent that he can't, and he never will. This is because real ... • 67. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind By Michel Gondry Essay A hollow feeling inside of your chest consumes your body. The room is filled with your sobs and hiccuped breaths. A million thoughts are racing through your head; none of these are positive. You tell yourself that you wish you never met them. You plea at the universe to take away all the memories of them. You beg to never again feel this type of agony. If possible, would you eradicate the memory of another human? In the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) do exactly this. Directed by Michel Gondry, this American romantic comedy wonderfully expresses the idea that a person's memories are fundamental in human growth. Through cinematography, lighting, and character development, Gondry successfully directs one of the best twenty–first–century films. The cinematography of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind effectively develops the film's plot and characters. In the beginning of the movie, Joel is shown awaking in a close up. This shot easily shows the gloomy expression on his face, asking the audience to question why he is upset. Hand held cameras provide the story with a natural, more realistic feel, inviting the audience into Joel's memories. The hand held cameras provide the film with an imperfect, human perspective. This can be viewed primarily in the honeymoon on ice scene. Slight shakes of the camera are evident. In the scene when Joel and Clementine see each other on the train to Montauk, far ... "When we first formed, which was the day we started writing 'Hello Memory', the three of us each dumped our mental baggage onto the table," said guitarist Matt Lewkowicz. What followed was the slow and arduous process of deciding what worked and what didn't, carefully defining what Little Daylight would be. "The way that we work is a lot of trimming that goes on." What resulted is an bombastic album comprised of unforgettable rhythm–oriented melodies punctuated with smartly arranged layers of synth and guitar. Grounded by Erica Zeiler's sultry vocals, each song is a carefully calibrating experiment in atmosphere, and it's determined to take you places. The album's single "Overdose" is a humming, thumping, cascading call–to–arms on the dance floor. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "When we listen to music, we try to figure out what's behind it," said Lewkowicz. Their performances, although offering polished pop tunes, attempt to stay as tactile and raw as possible, communicating their ideas directly.
