The Missing Element Of Self Discipline
PHIL 0012 Tuesday 6 PM Fuwen Tu One Reason to Question Justice: the Missing Element of Self–
discipline Whether justice is a good part of living a happy life or not is an important issue to address
in Philosophy. According to Glaucon, there are three kinds of good. The first kind of good is that the
thing is 'welcomed for its own sake' (Lee, 41). This kind of good is good in itself such as pleasure.
The second kind of good is something people desire; it is good in 'both itself and its consequences'.
The third kind of good is that the thing is only good for its consequences but not in itself, such as
exercise and medical treatment. Different from people, who argue that justice may only good in its
consequence or even bad since it compromises personal interests, Socrates argues that justice is
good in its nature just like health (Lee, 153–154). Since justice cannot be seen directly in an
individual, Socrates discusses justice from a large scale–the justice in community–before goes into
individuals. Socrates argues that the justice in the community is analogous to the justice in an
individual. In a community/state, there are '4 cardinal virtues'–wisdom, courage, self–discipline, and
justice. Wisdom is defined as the people who rule the city–the rulers–have the knowledge of truth.
In other words, the state has wisdom if the rulers are wise. Courage is defined as the people who
keep the city safe–the guardians–are able to judge what is worthy of fearing. So the state is

My Barroom Observation
In lieu of having the opportunity to measure a tall object, I decided that it would be interesting to
know the height of my barn because it was never identified. There are few steps to finding how tall
an item is, however, it is quite difficult to be completely accurate with the objects that I utilized.
First, I needed to build a clinometer with a straw, protractor, and string, which was used to find the
angle of elevation. "The angle of elevation is the angle formed by a horizontal line and a line of
sight to a point above the line"(Rehill), and in this specific scenario, the point is the top of the barn.
Furthermore, I then measured the distance from the barn to where I was standing and looked,
through the straw, to the top of it. I had to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, the answers that I got are reasonable because they do not seem too small and they are
quite average for an one and a half story building. Nevertheless, the height of the barn might be
inaccurate because errors could have a drastic impact on the final answer. To illustrate, the
measurements are the basis for the whole entire problem by reason that trigonometric ratios place
primary importance on them, so, therefore, if they are incorrect, then all of the resulting numbers
will be wrong. I struggled with obtaining the appropriate angle measurements because I had
problems with pinching the string at the correct place and viewing the necessary spot through the
straw. Also, if the calculations were amiss, then it would produce false numbers, which causes the
final answer to be off due to the legitimate figures not being incorporated. I had a problem with this
also as I did not set up the correct equations at first, which would give me faulty calculations and,
consequently, mess up my final answer. However, I quickly figured out that my equations were
incorrect, so, therefore, I did not experience any problems attributed to that exact reason. Another
problem that I faced was with building the clinometer itself due to the protractor being attached to a
geometric template and not aligning the straw correctly, but I just used my protractor as there was no
effect and I figured out how the straw needed to be

A Study On The Children
Hi Families,
It is almost the end of the year and the students have accomplished so much. I am fortunate enough
to witness exploration and creativity every day with your children. The growth I've seen so far is
remarkable! Shy little ones who barely spoke back in September are now approaching me and
telling me all about their weekend and their best play date party EVER!
It has been an exciting month in the rainforest! Measurements are all around us and the children
have been "measuring up" to everything in the classroom. Every day the children have been
experimenting with real objects to gain understanding measurement concepts. To begin this week's
lesson, the children measure and compare the circumference of objects, they measure the distance
objects travel, and they explored the concept of volume by measuring how much of a certain
material fits into a different container.
Below are some of the activities we have done this week.
The children learned that different objects can have the same or different circumference. We started
the lesson by talking about previous measuring activities we did in our "Living Things in the
Neighborhood" theme. We talked about the activity we did on measuring trees and I asked the
children to recall what we did when we measured the circumference of the trees. Some of the
children remembered the activity and commented that we used a measuring tape to measure the tree.
They did not remember the meaning of the word circumference, so I

The Use of Immorality in Order to Achieve Popular Rule Essay
Throughout The Prince and The Discourses of Livy, Niccolo Machiavelli demonstrates multiple
theories and advocacies as to why popular rule is important to the success of a state. Popular rule is
a term that will be used to define an indirect way to govern the people of a state. In order to rule the
masses, a leader must please the people or revolts will occur, causing mayhem and a lack of stability
in one’s state. During both written works, Machiavelli stresses the importance of obedience and
order needed for a state, and especially for a leader to be successful. Machiavelli thoroughly states
that anything and everything must be done to keep the peace of the masses, even if acts of
immorality are used. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the bigger picture, it is more moral to prevent disorder to a community and keep it obedient and
prosperous than to let it fall to disorder and tyranny. Therefore, the acts of immorality that a ruler
does to accomplish this are justifiable means to the more important end of securing power to
maintain order.
Machiavelli is a supporter of popular rule, though in an indirect way. Rulers must please their
constituents but not give them power. For if the people feel they have power they will rebel against
their leader and cause chaos in the state. On page 96 Machiavelli states, “it is the populace who
are responsible for innumerable conflicts and clashes in a republic. Because it is difficult to
satisfy the majority without upsetting the minority, people become enraged and protest, causing
what the government would consider to be conflicts. That is why it is so important to create a strong
government that revolves around a magistrate or council, for people fear being publicly accused of
faults, let alone as a threat to public liberty. Machiavelli states that there is no authority more
“useful and necessary for leaders of a government to employ upon their citizens.
“[Citizens] for fear of being accused, dare not attempt to do anything that might

Equilibrium: Analysis: Colonization
In a two dimensional shape, a centre is point that is equidistant from all edges of a shape.
Hence, without the edges, a centre cannot be determined. The idea of centre is used to depict
colonisation where a coloniser becomes a centre to the margin that the colonised are made into. The
idea of the centre was not only geographical, but also, political and social. The centre is
geographically where the ruler(s) resides. Politically, centre is the entity with which/whom, power
rests. Socially, the opinion makers are considered the centre. During colonisation, the coloniser
becomes the most power politically. The coloniser is the opinion maker, and, geographically, they
rule the colony based out of their homeland. The aim of the centre is to bring into their influence, the
occupants of the margin or periphery.
.
I have chosen a visual text(movie) called, "Equilibrium" to better understand and explain the
concept of the centre–margin relationship. The movie is a science–fiction and is set in the future
after the third world war. Due to the war, everything is destroyed and the leaders come together to
form a council that takes to a new approach to governing people to prevent any future world wars.
This approach involves preventing people from feeling emotion by ... Show more content on

Consolidation of power with a certain entity, be it, place, person, state etc, makes it the centre. Who
or what ever the centre has power over becomes the margin. This concept of centre–margin might
pose a dilemma similar to that of the chicken and the egg, as to which came first, the centre or the
margin. The text can be used to clear this confusion. The rulers came together to build a system of
government. People submitting to the form of government made the government powerful, thereby,
making them the centre of the periphery that the citizens formed. Physical centre in the movie is a
building called the "Equilibrium" which was the headquarters of the

Thesis On Might Is Right
Might is Right Might is Right is a concept followed and agreed with by many leaders from all over
the world, from every part of history, and even from novels and fairy tales. "The Sword in the
Stone", by T.H. White, is about a young boy called Wart who grows up to be King Arthur and about
the changes in his childhood. Wart's mentor, Merlyn, knows that Wart will be king one day, and
helps to prepare Wart for his role as an adult through lessons. These lessons have to do with all sorts
of things that will help Wart in his life, such as making good decisions and using wisdom. Along
with those, some of them are focused on Might is Right and what he would do with power. One
might ask, what exactly is Might is Right? Might is Right is a philosophy ... Show more content on

Many people believe that the best type of ruler is a kind and good ruler. In the article "23 Traits of a
Good Leader", both Nancy Clark, author of "18 Holes for Leadership", and Darcy Eikenberg, a
leadership and workplace coach in the Red Cape Revolution commonly believe that true leaders
have humility, the ability to empower, be collaborative, a good communicator, and fearless. In the
article, Clark states, "True leaders have confidence but know when it becomes hubris". This proves
that many people out there believe that these positive qualities are what make a good leader. On the
other hand, many also believe that a being a kind or good leader doesn't automatically make you an
effective leader. Others believe that the best type of ruler is what that has total control. In the article
"15 Characteristics Effective Leader", Robert Tanner expresses, "They are clear about what needs to
be done, they challenge assumptions, they accept and use conflict as needed...". This quote
represents being a harsh, no nonsense leader, taking more control over the people, and not letting
people question a leader's authority. These two quotes have very different takes on what you need to
be a leader, but are they really so different? A leader is someone who has command over people. An
especially good ruler has both effective and good qualities

Machiavelli 's The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli
Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince is a book that examines the qualities and strategies required for a
ruler in order to maintain power. Despite being composed in the 16th century, the ideas presented
are applicable even to mythical kings from texts over a thousand years ago. Throughout the story of
Seneca's Oedipus, substantial connections could be made between Oedipus and The Prince's ideas of
rule, such as methods in acquiring principalities, channeling subjects' fear, the use of cruelty and
controlling circumstance. In this essay, I will first talk about these ideas presented in The Prince,
then suggest how Machiavelli might evaluate the character, strategies, leadership, and fortunes of
Seneca's Oedipus. Based on these four factors, I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But I did unlash the knot of her enigma's webbed deceit, the grimly riddling song of the winged
beast. Jocasta: .... Thebes' scepter was your prize for glorious deeds, your payment for destruction of
the Sphinx. (Seneca 203)
Machiavelli might assess that Oedipus obtains his kingship of Thebes by solving the Sphinx's riddle
with his wits and wisdom. In spite of the danger he faces, he does not shy away from the
opportunity of saving the city. Although Oedipus experiences great difficulty in attaining power,
Machiavelli would have faith in his ability to maintain it, because Oedipus acquires his principality
through his own arms and ability.
Furthermore, Machiavelli presents ideas about the qualities that rulers should have in order to avoid
contempt in Chapter XIX:
What will make him despised is being considered inconstant, frivolous, effeminate, pusillanimous
and irresolute... He should contrive that that his actions should display grandeur, courage,
seriousness and strength. (Machiavelli 64)
In fact, Jocasta echoes these ideas in her advice to Oedipus as he is confronted with the plague:
Being king, I think, means this: coming to grips with what confronts you. The harder it is to stand,
the more power's burden slips and slides, the more determinedly you must take your stand. Be
brave!

Essay on Aristotle
y does Plato believe that only Philosophers are fit to rule?
Rather than the practical pursuit we are accustomed to, for Plato, Politics is an intellectual faculty.
Governance by non–philosophers is to be governed by opinions, beliefs and self–interest; in contrast
the philosopher ruler will govern with virtue and justice with no hidden agenda. The philosopher is
in love, in love with learning, knowledge and truth. It is important to make a distinction here
between the acquisition of knowledge and the acquisition of truth, because knowledge is not
necessarily the truth.
With the help of an allegory, Plato explains the sensible world of illusion and belief, the place where
most people reside. The philosopher has stepped outside this ... Show more content on

The rulers will not own property, nor have money, they will be free of vices, excesses and desires.
They will have a Spartan existence (Plato was an admirer of Spartan culture). A ruler in Platos'
society as described in his dialogue The Republic would be incorruptible, an absolute model of
sensible world perfection and justice. If one was to look no further into Platos' utopian society you
could be forgiven for thinking that the philosopher rulers would be the ultimate answer for political
duties and government administration. A more detailed examination of policy and structure is
necessary, prior to arriving at a conclusion.
The structure in Platos' society is tripartite and hierarchical, made up of the philosopher kings as
rulers. The auxiliaries who will be in a sort of military role (prospective rulers) and the artisans
(workers) who will produce all the consumable and non consumable goods deemed necessary for
consumption and the continued economic viability of the society.
The philosopher rulers duties as administrators in platos' society or commonwealth are to legislate,
educate and to keep an ever watchful eye on the auxillaries and artisans, paying special attention to
the auxillaries, especially those that are considered fit to be future philosopher rulers. All auxiliaries
will be subjected to a series of tests, which will check their powers of resistance to self–interest,

Cross–section: Done in a group, Primary Data
To measure the cross sectional area, we stretched out a tape measure across the river from one side
of the bank to the other. Starting at 0cm, we put a metre ruler into the water, ensuring that it touched
the ground, and first measured to where the water stopped at the ruler to find the water depth. Then,
we measured from the bottom to where the tape was stretched out to find the depth of the channel.
We repeated this every 20cm until we got to the other side. This method was done for sites 1 and 2
on 27th June 2016, at about 10:30 am for site 1 (Busketts Lawn) and about 2:30 pm for site 2
(Woodlands). It took us about 20 minutes overall for each site. This method is necessary because it
will let me draw up a cross–section graph which allows me to find the occupied channel width (a
key question), wetted perimeter and hydraulic radius of the river so I can see how this changes as I
go downstream. The higher the hydraulic radius the lower the amount of water contacting the bed
and banks so the river should be more efficient because it has less friction and water can move at a
higher velocity. Therefore, I can see how the efficiency of the river changes downstream. A main
issue we had with this was that

My Team 's First Robotics Competition Of The Season
It was two in the morning, five hours before my team's first robotics competition of the season. We'd
already worked tirelessly, but were planning one last test run before going to bed.
The robot was driving over the ramp when, all of a sudden, it stopped. The tank treads that we had
researched and trusted had snapped in half.
Most of us yelled in frustration, but not our team leaders, Max and Matt. They picked up the robot,
brought it back to the work table, and within an hour, they had orchestrated a creative solution to the
snapped tread. Watching the way they managed the situation, I felt inspired: I was only a freshman
but I wanted to know what they knew.
Over the course of the next two years, I learned from Max and Matt the different ways to cut metal,
how to solder wire, how to write basic code for the robot, and how to design mechanisms that would
ensure the greatest reliability. I learned how to document my work in an engineering notebook and
how to explain to judges the way our team operates. As I gained more experience and grew more
committed to the team, I began to come into the robotics lab during lunch and on Sundays. I was
always eager to keep working.
By my junior year, I was ready to take on a leadership role. That year, as at the start of every season,
all participants in the league watched a video detailing the tasks our robots would need to perform in
the various competitions. The hardest and most valuable of the year's challenges was to design

Great Rulers and What Makes Them Successful Essay
Great Rulers and What Makes Them Successful
What makes a great ruler? Several great powers in history including Cyrus of Persia, T'ai–tsung, the
Duke of Valentine, and Agathocles will be analyzed in order to attempt to answer this question.
Based on three readings, these questions will be answered:
1. What are the personal qualities of Cyrus and T'ai–tsung? What is it about these personal qualities
that made them successful rulers?
2. How does Machiavelli portray the Duke of Valentine and Agathocles? Does he consider them
good or bad rulers? Why?
3. Compare and contrast Machievelli's concept of an effective ruler with the depictions of Cyrus and

Overall, people wanted to please Cyrus. His subordinates were not scared by harsh punishments into

The Rule Of Man Is Nonappearance Of Rule Of Man
Rule of man is nonappearance of rule of law. It is a general public in which one individual,
administration, or a gathering of people, rules subjectively.
The Sovereign activities total expert and is not bound by any law, he as a man remains outside law.
The savant Thomas Hobbes supported such a general public, saying that a general public would be
better on the off chance that it had one supreme ruler as he would be allowed to pick and do what he
supposes is best for the general public without considering the suppositions of others.
To start with, it is vital to characterize the two frameworks. A legislative framework ruled by men is
any framework in which fallen man coordinates the course of the country. This incorporates not just
tyrannies and theocracies where one man or a chosen few call the greater part of the shots,
additionally vote based systems where lion's share supposition rules with no restrictions or securities
for minority sentiment and individual freedom. As indicated by our Founding Fathers, majority rule
governments were as perilous as any type of government. Benjamin Franklin characterized popular
government as "three wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch," and clarified that
genuine freedom is "an all around outfitted sheep challenging the vote." In entirety, any rule of man
framework, regardless of whether crowd rule or rule by the elites, is bound for disappointment.
Freedom and property won't be ensured under such frameworks, and the

Similarities Between Gilgamesh And Oedipus
Heroes are extraordinary characters who carry human qualities that reassure followers of the heroes'
limitations. A hero is commonly considered a god, a being with great power that is brave enough to
save whole cities. The human qualities are always their greatest fault, it comes in the image of pride,
ego, selfishness, and even denial. These flaws are represented by the heroes Gilgamesh and
Oedipus. Gilgamesh and Oedipus undertake journeys in search of a truth that will preserve their
glory. While Gilgamesh searches for immortality, Oedipus searches for a different fate, both, fearing
death. However, only one reaches their their goal. Similarly, both figures are kings; rulers of
communities which reflect their ruling. In Gilgamesh's epic, the people knew of his endeavors and
had to live with his sporadic acts because he was their ruler and accepted him as so. As declared,
"Day and night his behavior became overbearing. He was their shepherd, yet powerful, superb,
knowledgeable and expert, Gilgamesh would not leave young girls alone,"(199), and it is a positive
reflection of his ruling due to the community accepting his antics through their approval of his
leadership. On the other hand, Oedipus' ruling was a negative concept on the fate of the people. The
people see his flaws and have their doubts of his rule once they realize he is the root of their
suffering, yet do not fully accept the reality of the situation. "This god of plague guts our city and

Ideas of Rulers in "Tao-te Ching" and "The Prince" Essay
When comparing Tao–te Ching to The Prince there are numerous differences. The authors of these
two documents had almost completely opposite ideas of how a ruler should behave and how a
government should be run. One believed that the ruler could accomplish the most by doing the least;
the other believed that by controlling how the public perceived a ruler was what would make him a
success or a failure. Machiavelli believed that to rule the prince must do things that would win
approval with his people, and that the prince must always keep and maintain arms to remain in
power. On the other hand Lao–tzu believed that the master ruled with as little involvement as
possible, he believed that to "not do" would have the greatest effect, and ... Show more content on

Throughout The Prince are guide lines for a ruler to follow concerning matters of how he is going to
be viewed by the people. Machiavelli says that a prince should take care to not be too generous or
too cruel as either could have a negative effect on his reputation. While these two ideas might seem
to have little relevance to one another it is just an example of how Lao–tzu's and Machiavelli's ideas
about how important the rulers public persona was to their ability to rule successfully.
Finally one major difference is that Machiavelli believes that the ruler should always keep arms and
be ready to fight off a threat. Lao–tzu has the idea that the only need to keep arms is for a last resort
when all other options have been exhausted. This is an enormous difference; The Prince gives the
idea that by not maintaining a military and a willingness to fight the ruler may be over thrown by
either another country or by his own people. Lao–tzu gives the idea that if you rule properly you
will not need the weapon except in the most extreme circumstances. He also gives the idea that if a
ruler tries to rule by force another force opposing the ruler will come to him.
Both of these authors have good ideas on how to rule properly and have the greatest influence on
their people. While neither one of the ideas is wrong nor right they are both good proposals for any

Essay On Angle Analysis Paper
Introduction: The group of Kayla Morabito, Garrett Lewis, Rebecca Oviedo and Zach Prow were
tasked with measuring the PLM building on Main Campus at Wake tech. The first step was to find
the building then measure perpendicularly out thirty feet using a string and measuring tape. Starting
from the ground, at zero feet, one group member held the protracted while the other looked at the
angle created by the top of the building. The group members would rotate places to double check the

At the four feet measurement, the angle was easier to see therefor the height was a little easier to
calculate versus the ground measurement. Although these numbers were in the general area, for all
three calculations some error was present due to estimations of the angle as well as holding the
protractor. This was difficult because it needed to be in the exact same spot for all calculations since
a group member needed to hold it, the proctor did move slightly throwing off the numbers only a
few degrees. The difficulties in this project was obtaining the data from the ground because it was
difficult to get underneath the protractor to see the angle; someone was on the ground looking up at
the building leaving room for interpretation of the angle measure. This process could have been
done differently by choosing a spot with a lower vantage point. For example, if a group was to
measure this building again and there were stairs, to stand at the bottom of the stairs while still on
the ground level that the building is on. This way that the calculations are still measuring from the
ground to the top of the building, but it would be a lot easier to see underneath the angle versus

Stories of People before Us
It was many years ago, long before your beloved parents or even their own. It was far past the time
when skyscrapers first began their grazing of the heavens, past even the taking advantage of devote
teachers. Further still, our story takes us. Much like many tales of this sort– there is perhaps little
truth weaved in all– that serve not as references for literal information but references for wisdom
and understanding. I do not profess that readers who study these tomes will come out any the wiser,
nor is it this tome's sole purpose. Some things in life do not require purpose nor plan, but moving
forward. Before our world, there was perhaps another. In it lived a single person, a woman perhaps,
who ruled over all the animals and plants. She, like most others, did not enjoy her solitude and
decided to design a people to accompany her. So thus, people came to be. Despite the people, she
had no joy. Those she had created were savage, greedy, and sinful. It displeased her. However, she
was merciful and could not bring herself to destroy them, so instead felt it necessary to guide them.
To assist her she created a new type of people, one who would embody all that she valued. These
people would be rulers and would rule over the other citizens. To form her new rulers she took four
traits, agápē (unconditional love), compassion, generosity, trustworthiness, and composed one
whom she would entrust with her people. Carefully she layered a combination of agápē–

The Descent Of A Regime From A To An Oligarchy
To understand the descent of a regime from a timocracy to an oligarchy, first the tenets of a
timocracy must be understood. A timocracy first comes into being due to human error of the
guardians. The guardians are not perfect, so when choosing the next generation of guardians to
educate, they will not always choose the best candidates. Since the current guardians will not always
select the children with gold souls, the aristocracy will eventually degenerate into a less just society.
Some new rulers will attempt to preserve the old and just ways, while the less benevolent rulers will
want private property among guardians, creating tension in the ruling class. Eventually, this tension
will be alleviated by "coming to an agreement on a middle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Men will start to "pervert the laws in that direction," that direction being for profit (550d11). Wealth
is then equated to honor, and naturally things deemed honorable are those that citizens seek to
achieve. A change is made in the city's fundamental governing doctrine; the change states that only
those with a certain amount of wealth can rule the city. This is the birth of the oligarchic regime.
Only citizens of a certain economic status have any political power. Those who have the political
power then wish to keep the power, and will abuse their lawmaking ability to oppress the poor.
Rulers will do whatever they can to keep the poor where they are, so that the lower class cannot
replace the current rulers as lawmakers. The factions of rich and poor create a city doomed to fail.
All the problems of the oligarchy can be traced back to equating wealth to honor and the descent
from timocracy to the oligarchy itself. Socrates notes 5 distinct problems of the oligarchy, the first
being the distribution of political power. Due to the standard of wealth required in the city, a wise,
just, and virtuous man could not become a ruler if he is poor. If a true philosopher–king existed, but
was poor, he could not rule the city. This inevitably will lead to more injustice and harm done to the
city, for those who are unfit to rule are the only ones with political power. If wealth was never

Ideal Characteristics of Plato's Guardians
Ideal Characteristics of Plato's Guardians The characterisitics of the ideal guardian is summarized in
those words by Socrates in the second book of the Republic : "[H]e who is to be a really good and
noble guardian of the State will require to unite in himself philosophy and spirit and swiftness and
strength. . ." Swiftness and strength is deemed necessary as the guardian is to be like a well–bred
watchdog, who ought to be "quick to see, and swift to overtake the enemy when they see him, and
strong too, if when they have caught him, they have to fight with him." The requirement of 'spirit' is
then derived from this, because if he is to fight well he ought to be brave, and Socrates finds that he
is not likely to be brave who has not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Heroes should not be seen lamenting or fearing death. In short, only virtues which are desirable shall
be depicted in their tales, and none that are undesirable which children might imitate. The gymnastic
education that Socrates prescribes is not as complicated. He rather merely says that it would be
sufficient for their purposes that those being reared to be guardians maintain a healthy diet and
follow a simple exercise plan from youth. What is more emphasized by Socrates is that there should
be balance in the study of both gymnastics and music, and that these studies should be properly
harmonized. Those who neglect gymnastics will tend be soft, but on the other hand, those who
likewise neglect music will tend to savagery. As Socrates says, "this ferocity only comes from spirit,
which if rightly educated, would give courage, but, if too much intensified, is liable to become hard
and brutal." He continues, "On the other hand the philosopher will have the quality of gentleness.
And this also, when too much indulged, will turn to softness, but, if educated rightly will be gentle
and moderate." Thus the traits that make a good guardian are developed and nurtured through a
good balance of musical and gymnastic education. That portion in the second book is where the
qualities are actually first enumerated. The discussion will deviate a little in the third to the fifth
books, and the subject will be brought up again in the sixth book. There Socrates

The Pros And Cons Of Absolutism
Absolutism, a form of government where the rulers word is law. All aspects are decided by the one
in charge and his word is absolute. In this form of government the ruler will typically have trusted
advisers but besides simple recommendations they have no real power. An absolute government has
all aspects such as religion, political standing and economy decided by its ruler.
In 1961 thomas hobbes wrote that the passions that incline men to peace are the fear of death. When
a man wants something he can fight and take a chance to get it. Most men fear that chance as they
may die and lose everything, but the thought of coming out on top is enough to encourage these
actions in individuals. These individuals can incite others who would have normally turned down
the challenge. In a case when the odds are not in favor of those goals set by an individual leading
others one must not hesitate with what must be done. Hobbes understood that if there was no
concise ruler that there was a sort of stutter when doing things taking action required to go through
the proper channels. When 10 men are in control they must all agree but when only one man is in
control all that must be done is let them decide entirely.
When Bossuet talks about power he states that it must be employed with fear and self restraint as it
is a blessing bestowed upon the ruler by god. Bossuet says that the throne is not for man but a place
for man to speak the will of god. Unlike in absolutism Bosset says that these

A Study On Teaching Youth
From oftentimes reflecting upon the course and technique for teaching youth in this and a
neighboring kingdom, with the general achievement and result thereof, I am resulted in these present
circumstances determination: that training is dependably the more terrible, in extent to the riches
and magnificence of the guardians; nor do I question at all, that if the entire world were currently
under the domain of one ruler, (if I may be permitted to pick where he ought to alter the seat of his
realm,) the main child and beneficiary of that ruler would be the most noticeably awful instructed
mortal that ever was conceived following the creation; and I question the same extent will hold
through all degrees and titles, from a sovereign downwards to the regular nobility.
I don 't say, this has been dependably the case; for in better times it was specifically generally, and a
researcher may fill a large portion of his Greek and Roman racks with creators of the noblest birth,
and additionally most astounding ethicalness: nor do I assess all countries at present with this
deformity, for I know there are some to be excepted, and especially Scotland, under all the
detriments of its atmosphere and soil, if that bliss be not rather owing even to those extremely
hindrances. What is then to be done, on the off chance that this reflection must alter on two nations,
which will be most prepared to take offense, and which, of all others, it will be minimum reasonable

The Meaning Of Power And Religion In The Epic Of Sundiata
In Medieval West Africa, nations of political power and religion overlapped. In the Epic of Sundiata
we see this intersection in the role of prophecy. This essay will show that prophets regularly and
ploy supernatural means to reinforce the political status of future King, Sundiata. While using exerts
from the Epic, this essay will analyze the text to show the underlying meaning of power and religion
in Medieval West Africa In the beginning of the Epic, the griot lays out the story by setting up the
unforeseen future. The griot states, "God has his mysteries which none can fathom. You, perhaps,
will be a king. You can do nothing about it. You, on the other hand, will be unlucky, but you can do
nothing about that either. Each man finds his way already marked out for him and he can change
nothing of it." The griot, as a repository for history and hence a spokesman for the largeness of
Time, often reminds his listener of how small mankind can be in the face of such greatness. The tone
here is a bit harsh as the griot points to his audience and tells them they know nothing of what is
meant for them. But this is the griot's purpose: to remind us that we are subservient to greater forces
than any man could hope to understand or master. No matter what anyone tried to do to hinder
Sundiata's greatness, they could not stop it. They just enabled what they did not want to happen.
This is what the griot is trying to tell them. He is telling them that no matter what they do to try

The State Of The United States
In the exception of the third world countries, a lot of us today have lived in a world of security,
peace and freedom. The roads are perfectly built and organized, endless skyscrapers that reached for
the skies are greatly regulated and controlled. Security are provided for us in terms of local polices,
the FBI, and the courts that ensure each and every one of us are innocent until proven guilty. Yet,
many of us have taken that for granted. We did not realize how much we have relied on legal and
organized rules, or how much we benefited from private rights or property rights. Imagined all of
that taken away, when people can simply do away with others, without a hint of human rights. The
world then becomes much more horrifying, as there are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each of them began to compete for powers to rule over their subjects. The greater authority would
be the territorial rulers, which was the Kings, Princes, Queens, or Dukes that became the focal point
of decision–making in the territory. The territorial rulers wanted to defend their territory, and so,
they needed more revenues to fund for wars. Moreover, wars were crucial in that period, as they
were becoming bigger and more expensive. The only way that territorial rulers could gain revenue
was from its subjects such as the towns, villages, churches, or aristocrats (Lecture 2). It was almost
impossible use coercion and forced the elites to pay. This way was not efficient, and was prone to
greater revolts and resistance. Hence, the only ideal way was to come up with a bargain. The bargain
may involve giving benefits such as permanent taxations, better security and welfare to the elites, so
that they may give up their powers. The rulers were not able to fight efficient wars if the subjects
were not willing to support them. Moreover, the aristocrats rule over a huge chunk of the military
fights, which make it difficult for rulers to control the war, if the military subjects were mainly
controlled by the elites.
Each of the elites possesses different powers and comparative advantages. It is inevitable that a lot

Atlatl Research Paper
The atlatl is an ancient paleolithic tool used as a lever to lengthen the distance that a dart can be
thrown, compared to using just an arm. But does an atlatl really lengthen how far a dart travels
compared to throwing the dart by hand? Based on accumulated information, the hypothesis was: If
an atlatl is used to throw a dart, then it will lengthen the distance that the dart will travel compared
to throwing it by hand. This is because the atlatl is a lever that acts as another joint of the arm,
increasing both the leverage, force, and energy of a throw. To test this, I created an atlatl using a
wooden branch with a spur sticking out of it, paracord, a rock, tape, a bamboo stick, duct tape, knife,
and a saw. I carved the wooden branch to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Aztecs used the atlatl in war in the fight with the Spanish conquistadors, as well as to fish. The
name atlatl is actually coined from the Aztec word atlatl, meaning water thrower. Though there are
many variations of the atlatl, the basis of it stays the same. It was generally made with 3 major parts:
the handle, the shaft, and the spur. The handle is what was held in the hand, the shaft is between the
handle and spur, and the spur is a slightly inclined point that fits into a small hole at the end of a
dart.
The atlatl is known to have other additions to it. For example, a stone weight was sometimes added
which acts as a counterbalance between the atlatl and the dart. It also resists acceleration, which
allows for the dart to store more energy in itself before it pushes off. Some say use of a weight also
lessens the whistling sound that an atlatl can make as it speeds through the air, enabling for a silent
and deadly weapon. Another addition to the atlatl is a wrist loop which prevents the atlatl from
flying off of the hand as the dart

"Impalement was initiated by taking an oiled stake about as wide as a burly man's arm, and inserting

if that wasn't enough Vlad made sure the oiled stake was not too sharp to make sure shock didn't kill
the victims. Set up around the castle were the bodies, and the smell was horrendous throughout the
castle. Vlad thought violence was the answer to misbehavior, so this is what he did. However, Vlad

nails in the head, cutting off of limbs, strangulation, burning, cutting off of noses and ears,
mutilation of sexual organs, scalping, skinning, exposure to the elements or wild animals, and

Machiavelli’s Views on Government Essay
At first glance Machiavelli's writings could be mistaken for evil and satanic beliefs, but in reality
there are many good underlying points as to how to rule a nation. I believe that the New Yorker's
description of Machiavelli is the best example of his life and beliefs, because it not only touches
upon the high points, but the low points of beliefs as well. The New Yorker goes into great detail
about how Machiavelli came up from a mid level family to achieve a role as a government official/
"ambassador" just to be thrown in prison after years of trying to stabilize and unify an unstable
country through means of war and fear. Machiavelli wasn't only a government official he was a
strategic genius, but only because as ambassador he had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, Machiavelli wrote about the young leader Borgia who conquered many nations in the
name of Spain. He explained how it was necessary for "a prince... to work against what is merciful,
loyal, humane, upright, and scrupulous.". This makes a ruler look bad, however in reality what the
ruler does make a ruler look bad may improve the quality of the nations he is conquering and ruling.
Machiavelli wrote that Borgia conquered many nations, but these nations had weak rulers, who had
let the nations become over run with crime and filth, but once conquered by Borgia and his men
were brought up to a good quality standard with less crime and more peace and order, due to the
enforcement of Spanish law. That is why Machiavelli's misconceived writings were actually meant
to show that even though a ruler may look bad in people's eyes, his actions actually create good
within the nations he controls. A more recent example of a leader who would fit under Machiavelli's
theory was Adolf Hitler. Hitler was an extremist whose views should never be tolerated, but in
reality he had helped his people get out of an economic depression and improved the quality of life
for many Germans. What Machiavelli is trying to imply is to be a good leader isn't to be the most
well liked person, but to get results that improve people's lives even if you have to be seen in a
negative light. I do

may or may not apply to you. Please be aware.
THE BODY:
Materials needed: A 2L Pop–bottle, a black marker, paint, a ruler, and a roll of masking tape. You
can also use Duct–tape instead of masking tape if you prefer. Both works equally.
For the body of my rocket, I decided to cover it with masking tape. If I wanted to prove my
hypothesis correct, this would be the best way to prove my point.
Get your Pop–bottle, and start measuring it.
It is much easier when you measure out your Pop–bottle, so you know the exact and accurate
placements of wherever you decide to place your fins/cone.
Once you have measured out your Pop–bottle, decide where you are going to wrap the masking tape
around.
For my sake, I decided to cover the center of the bottle with masking tape.

Analysis Of ' The Education Of Cyrus '
Rohan Baishya
HUEN 1010 – Dr. Brooks
Short Paper #2
Due 03/20/17
In The Education of Cyrus, Xenophon addresses a critical query immediately in questioning how
one can rule over human beings without opposition or revolt. Xenophon initially reasons that no
regime can effectively do that, but after seeing the education and life of Cyrus, he argues that ruling
all others without revolution is not only plausible, but "not even difficult if done with knowledge."
Through his education and virtues, Cyrus acquired the knowledge to not only be a successful king,
but rule over the entire known world, effectively proving to Xenophon that it is possible to rule over
all human beings successfully. Cyrus was more than a king, but rather the founder of an ... Show

He chooses mercy over destruction so that as he conquers more and more land, human beings
choose to love him and join him, while being grateful to him for sparing them and giving them the
opportunity to do so. Not only that, but Cyrus keeps his followers and allies happy, showering them
in luxuries and rewarding them for showing virtue for his cause, making his cause their cause as
well. This system where people are rewarded for their virtues motivates the people he rules to stand
by him and becomes the basis for what Cyrus calls justice in his empire. Despite these virtuous
courses of actions Cyrus learned to take, Xenophon points out that successful military strategy and
diplomacy cannot be procured unless one has virtues such as discipline, drive, compliance,
prudence, generosity, and valor that Cyrus displays and acquires through his life and education.
Xenophon emphasizes that as necessary as superior battle strategies, competent and willing allies,
appealing laws, and diplomacy are, they do not amount to anything without a virtuous leader
educated in leading in such a manner as Cyrus was.
Cyrus, rather than marching onwards and leaving a path of destruction in his wake as many empire–
builders of his time did, instead won the favors of the people he defeated, keeping their homes and
cultures intact yet also not only giving them the opportunity to join him, but having them want to be
ruled by him. Cyrus was an attractive leader who through his life,

Question: What is the slope of "C vs d" line? What does it represent? The slope of the "C vs d" line,
according to the above graph, is 3.2548. This represents a ratio between the circumference and the
diameter of a round object. Being that I used imprecise measuring devices my measurements are a
little off. Although my ratio seems consistent in my graph. With a more accurate measuring device
my measurement would be closer to π.

The Rule Of St. Benedict And Beowulf
The Rule of St. Benedict and Beowulf both provide images of an ideal ruler and an ideal subject.
For the Rule of St. Benedict, they are the good abbot and the proper monk. In Beowulf, the good
warrior–king and the loyal members of his warrior band. These images of the ruler and subject of
each book are very similar and different as well as show the bad view of rulers and subjects and the
books show the value systems of those writing the texts. These pieces of literature, how different
they may seem, are relatively alike. First and foremost, they are alike in the ways of how they
present their ruler. In Beowulf, King Hrothgar is wise as he gives his sermon to Beowulf.
"At last his part of pride within him waxes and climbs, the watchman of the soul slumbering the
while. That sleep is too deep, tangled in its cares! Too close is the slayer who shoots the wicked
shaft from his bow! For all his armour he is unable to protect himself: the insidious bolt buries in his
chest, the crooked counsels of the accursed one" (63)
Which warns of the dangers of pride and fame which is something that an abbot was supposed to
say towards a monk. Another way their rulers are somewhat similar is that they are both known to
be father figures. Abbots are supposed to be "devoted and tender as only a father can be," as they say
in The Rule of St. Benedict which is much like Beowulf as King Hrothgar gives him fatherly advice.
They are also similar on how they present their subjects. Both books

Plato In The Republic And Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince
Plato and Machiavelli seek to examine necessary qualities leaders should possess to rule
successfully. Plato's examination of leaders can be considered deontologist (wherein morality
determines decision–making) and idealistic whereas Machiavelli's examination is consequentialist
(weighing potential consequences determines decision–making) and realistic. Using primary
evidence from Plato's The Republic and Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince as well as an examination
of controversial leaders like Donald Trump, I will argue that Machiavelli's ruler traits to a state are
superior to Plato's since they are more realistic of human nature of political actors.
PLATO'S LIVED WORLD: SETTING CONTEXT Plato lived in Ancient Athens through the
Peloponnesian War and a tyrannical government. After The Thirty Tyrants, Athens established a
quasi–direct democratic government and invoked a lottery system to distribute power amongst the
citizenry. For Wallach, Plato's polis was "was not a world inflected by [...], totalitarian regimes, [...]
political orders whose populations top one billion human beings, vast inequalities of wealth, [or]
nuclear–tipped drones." Ancient Athens was a polis of trade, tourism and culture but it did not have
the frequency/severity of modern foreign policy issues that affected its decisions. This is crucial to
Plato's views on leadership and it justifies the temporal limitations of his theory.

Speech On Focus Puller
Think you'll be able to pull focus without measuring for it? Think again, because you will not be
able to do so.
If we were to ask you the reason why the 1st assistant camera (AC) is also known as the "Focus
Puller", what would you say? It is because a follow focus puller knows how to shoulder that single
responsibility when it comes to keeping a subject in focus which is so amazingly valued, that there's
an entire job, in fact a career solely devoted to it.
There's no denying the fact that focus pullers and camera assistants have a lot more to do than just
spinning a disc which is attached to a lens for 12 hours a day, but this single act deserves the
applause being the most remarkable contribution that one makes to a film.

Measuring for focus should be the utmost goal because focus is set as well as decided upon through
distance. Without getting into lens optics, you're basically giving instructions to the lens which light
rays you want focused on the film or sensor plane at a certain distance.
Do you think your eyes you can do wonders the way tools do? Never! Your eyes will never be as
precise as your tools. Well, if you strive hard, you can achieve an exceptional level at guessing
distances, but don't you forget that not a single person will ever as exact as a dependable tape
measure? Keep in mind that guessing the distance and knowing the same are two different entities
when it comes to pulling focus.
Even until now it seems to be the most trusted way to keep a subject in focus. As far as the back
focus on a camera is set in the right way, you will not have a subject standing at 8 feet out of focus
when the lens is set to 8 feet. As simple as that!
Before the arrival of crisp monitors of digital cinema cameras and much enhanced monitoring of
contemporary film cameras, distance marks had a lot to do with how effectively you pulled focus.
With no monitor to support on, no peaking at all – it was your tape measure, your eyes, and last but

Machiavelli : The Power Of The Prince As A Prince
Machiavelli also goes to mentioning how a Prince can become a prince with four of the principles
he has listed in the text. It is said that one "Cannot be called prowess to kill fellow citizens, to betray
friends, to be treacherous, pitiless, irreligious. These ways can win a prince power but not glory,"
(Pg.174) This statement was to show how a prince can come to power through the use of crime, the
second one is hereditary. In most cases the prince is the next one for the throne and to lead so it's an
easier transition for a prince in this category. According to the text, those who fear, are the ones who
are dependent on the prince who ultimately become the loyal ones, where as the enemies of the
prince are always those who are dependent and have the aid of the army such as the nobles. The
wealth, army and knowledge is all passed down. The third principle is by the constitutional
principality, "A man who becomes prince by favor of the people finds himself standing alone, and he
has near him either no one or very few not prepared to take orders," (pg.175) here Machiavelli goes
on to mentioning how becoming prince through popular vote is often a disaster because not every
noble man is ready to take orders from a prince who got voted to be prince and has no skills to be
one. Here we can see how the ignorance and selfish arrogance in man kind is revealed. Machiavelli
is always brutally honest when describing men kind and their behaviors in politics. The forth
principle is the honoring of the prince on his words. According to the text, Machiavelli insists that a
prince should always stick to his words because men are wretched creatures who would not keep
their word to you, you need not keep your word to the them. And no prince ever lacked good
excuses to color his bad faith." (pg.180) here we see how Machiavelli mentions the cunning games
that go on in the minds of man kind. This shows how being "virtuous" is not significant for
Machiavelli where as it is for Plato, since Machiavelli has seen it all happen before his eyes. Where
as Plato has no experiences to relate all his theories with.

needed to rule a city

The Tenants Of A Foolproof Governmental System
What are the tenants of a foolproof governmental system? How does one man or a group lead a
much larger society to prosper and grow? These are hard questions to answer, but there have been a
few key figures in history who have tried to answer them. Among the earliest texts on this topic,
Confucius' Analects give some key insights into the topic. He seems to think the key to this perfect
government is for the leader and the people to be a "gentleman". Plato brings a more detailed view
on the topic with his The Republic. He decides that the key is to have everyone specialized in the
job they have the most aptitude in. Then comes Machiavelli and his The Prince, with his seemingly
pessimistic view on life, to give stricter rules for the leader to follow. He says to always be prepared
in war and to put up a façade of virtue while doing what needs to be done in the background. Once
someone takes all three of these texts into context, they can begin to form a picture how ancient and
even modern governments are and have been run. Although, one has to keep in mind that each of
these men also thought they had the definite answer to this perfect society, so keep studying their
and even more modern works. Confucius' main attribute for a model government was a model
leader that the people could follow and try to mimic. This leader should be virtuous and a
"gentleman" while studying history and ritual. He explains that one is virtuous "If he treats worthy

Determine the color for your tissue box cover and purchase the necessary construction paper. You
have the option for black paper or another color for the base if accessories are being added.
Measure each side of the tissue box to obtain the width and height. Transfer the measurements over
the the paper and cut out five sheets. Attach double–sided tape to the back of each black sheet. Place
all the sheets on the sides of the tissue box. The next step is to measure the width and length of the
top of your tissue box. Cut a piece of construction paper and tape it to the top of the tissue box. A
pair of scissors is needed to cut the hole for the tissue.
Decorate the sides of the tissue box by using different piece of colored construction paper. Trace out
an object or different shapes and cut then out with the scissors. Apply small pieces of tape or craft

Comparing Empress Wu And Pharaoh Cleopatra
Being a female in itself is hard, but being a female ruler, well that is almost near impossible, but it
can be done. Look at empress Wu and Pharaoh Cleopatra, they were powerful rulers. They both
worked hard but they also did have their differences, such as their ascent to power, achievements,
resources and overall method of ruling.
When it comes to these two women and there ascent to power it is two different stores to start but
they tend to overlap. For example Empress Wu was only able to be near the emperor because she
was his concubine, and she gave him everything that his wife was unable too. Even though she was
favored over Emperor Kao Tsung's wife, she felt that was not enough so she fed the Emperor a lie,
which he believed. Resulting in him removing his wife and marring Empress Wu. Not too much
later, Emperor Tsung died and Empress made a way for her youngest son took over so that way she
could rule by telling him what to do. Now when it comes to Pharaoh Cleopatra, becoming the ruler
was handed to her on a silver platter. She was put in charge after her father had his oldest daughter
killed, but she have to co–rule wither her older brother, along with advisors. ... Show more content

Empress Wu was provided those resources as well as Pharaoh Cleopatra. However they utilized
them differently. Empress Wu used her resources to get her power, but once she had it she used to
help the people of her dynasty. She wanted for her dynasty to become something better, so she
provided the needy with jobs and lowered taxes. Those that were educated were able to do more by
running the government. Pharaoh Cleopatra's resources were taken from her early on in her ruler
ship, but she was able to find more. She was able to get the help of Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony,
they help keep her in power as help as help her people. It is always good to have resource and it is
probably best to not take them for

Compare And Contrast Plato Vs Machiavelli
Plato vs. Machiavelli
A longstanding debate in human history is what to do with power and what is the best way to rule.
Who should have power, how should one rule, and what its purpose should government serve have
always been questions at the fore in civilization, and more than once have sparked controversy and
conflict. The essential elements of rule have placed the human need for order and structure against
the human desire for freedom, and compromising between the two has never been easy. It is a
question that is still considered and argued to this day. However, the argument has not rested solely
with military powers or politicians, but philosophers as well. Two prominent voices in this debate
are Plato and Machiavelli, both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The appetite is concerned with the pursuit of bodily pleasure. This aspect of the soul is satisfied only
by the creature comforts such as food, sex, and drink (167). These three divisions are found in the
individual, but in varying degrees. Some will lean more towards the appetite, while other are spirit–
driven, and still others find greater fulfillment through the intellectual pursuits of reason (168). Plato
clearly favors the reason in his three part soul, since it is with reason that one can grasp the Forms,
which themselves are the ultimate in beauty and truth.
To this end, the State, like the individual, has three parts that correspond to the parts of the
individual soul. The "lowest" of the parts is the appetite, which is comprised of the common people.
These would be craftsmen, laborers, and farmers who perform the menial tasks essential to the
functioning of the State. Those who make up this part of the State are best left to their own devices,
to enjoy and pursue physical and material pleasures, because they are not capable of grasping the
Forms. The second tier, the spirit, would be comprised of soldiers. It is the soldiers who have a
slight understanding of the Forms, but not enough of one to allow reason to dictate their actions.
Soldiers fight to the death to defend the State because of their emotional ties to it. In fact, Plato
proposes that the government raise children,

The Missing Element Of Self Discipline

  • 1. The Missing Element Of Self Discipline PHIL 0012 Tuesday 6 PM Fuwen Tu One Reason to Question Justice: the Missing Element of Self– discipline Whether justice is a good part of living a happy life or not is an important issue to address in Philosophy. According to Glaucon, there are three kinds of good. The first kind of good is that the thing is 'welcomed for its own sake' (Lee, 41). This kind of good is good in itself such as pleasure. The second kind of good is something people desire; it is good in 'both itself and its consequences'. The third kind of good is that the thing is only good for its consequences but not in itself, such as exercise and medical treatment. Different from people, who argue that justice may only good in its consequence or even bad since it compromises personal interests, Socrates argues that justice is good in its nature just like health (Lee, 153–154). Since justice cannot be seen directly in an individual, Socrates discusses justice from a large scale–the justice in community–before goes into individuals. Socrates argues that the justice in the community is analogous to the justice in an individual. In a community/state, there are '4 cardinal virtues'–wisdom, courage, self–discipline, and justice. Wisdom is defined as the people who rule the city–the rulers–have the knowledge of truth. In other words, the state has wisdom if the rulers are wise. Courage is defined as the people who keep the city safe–the guardians–are able to judge what is worthy of fearing. So the state is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. My Barroom Observation In lieu of having the opportunity to measure a tall object, I decided that it would be interesting to know the height of my barn because it was never identified. There are few steps to finding how tall an item is, however, it is quite difficult to be completely accurate with the objects that I utilized. First, I needed to build a clinometer with a straw, protractor, and string, which was used to find the angle of elevation. "The angle of elevation is the angle formed by a horizontal line and a line of sight to a point above the line"(Rehill), and in this specific scenario, the point is the top of the barn. Furthermore, I then measured the distance from the barn to where I was standing and looked, through the straw, to the top of it. I had to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, the answers that I got are reasonable because they do not seem too small and they are quite average for an one and a half story building. Nevertheless, the height of the barn might be inaccurate because errors could have a drastic impact on the final answer. To illustrate, the measurements are the basis for the whole entire problem by reason that trigonometric ratios place primary importance on them, so, therefore, if they are incorrect, then all of the resulting numbers will be wrong. I struggled with obtaining the appropriate angle measurements because I had problems with pinching the string at the correct place and viewing the necessary spot through the straw. Also, if the calculations were amiss, then it would produce false numbers, which causes the final answer to be off due to the legitimate figures not being incorporated. I had a problem with this also as I did not set up the correct equations at first, which would give me faulty calculations and, consequently, mess up my final answer. However, I quickly figured out that my equations were incorrect, so, therefore, I did not experience any problems attributed to that exact reason. Another problem that I faced was with building the clinometer itself due to the protractor being attached to a geometric template and not aligning the straw correctly, but I just used my protractor as there was no effect and I figured out how the straw needed to be ... • 5. A Study On The Children Hi Families, It is almost the end of the year and the students have accomplished so much. I am fortunate enough to witness exploration and creativity every day with your children. The growth I've seen so far is remarkable! Shy little ones who barely spoke back in September are now approaching me and telling me all about their weekend and their best play date party EVER! It has been an exciting month in the rainforest! Measurements are all around us and the children have been "measuring up" to everything in the classroom. Every day the children have been experimenting with real objects to gain understanding measurement concepts. To begin this week's lesson, the children measure and compare the circumference of objects, they measure the distance objects travel, and they explored the concept of volume by measuring how much of a certain material fits into a different container. Below are some of the activities we have done this week. The children learned that different objects can have the same or different circumference. We started the lesson by talking about previous measuring activities we did in our "Living Things in the Neighborhood" theme. We talked about the activity we did on measuring trees and I asked the children to recall what we did when we measured the circumference of the trees. Some of the children remembered the activity and commented that we used a measuring tape to measure the tree. They did not remember the meaning of the word circumference, so I ... The Use of Immorality in Order to Achieve Popular Rule Essay Throughout The Prince and The Discourses of Livy, Niccolo Machiavelli demonstrates multiple theories and advocacies as to why popular rule is important to the success of a state. Popular rule is a term that will be used to define an indirect way to govern the people of a state. In order to rule the masses, a leader must please the people or revolts will occur, causing mayhem and a lack of stability in one’s state. During both written works, Machiavelli stresses the importance of obedience and order needed for a state, and especially for a leader to be successful. Machiavelli thoroughly states that anything and everything must be done to keep the peace of the masses, even if acts of immorality are used. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the bigger picture, it is more moral to prevent disorder to a community and keep it obedient and prosperous than to let it fall to disorder and tyranny. Therefore, the acts of immorality that a ruler does to accomplish this are justifiable means to the more important end of securing power to maintain order. Machiavelli is a supporter of popular rule, though in an indirect way. Rulers must please their constituents but not give them power. For if the people feel they have power they will rebel against their leader and cause chaos in the state. On page 96 Machiavelli states, “it is the populace who are responsible for innumerable conflicts and clashes in a republic.â€? Because it is difficult to satisfy the majority without upsetting the minority, people become enraged and protest, causing what the government would consider to be conflicts. That is why it is so important to create a strong government that revolves around a magistrate or council, for people fear being publicly accused of faults, let alone as a threat to public liberty. Machiavelli states that there is no authority more “useful and necessaryâ€? for leaders of a government to employ upon their citizens. “[Citizens] for fear of being accused, dare not attempt to do anything that might ... The idea of centre is used to depict colonisation where a coloniser becomes a centre to the margin that the colonised are made into. The idea of the centre was not only geographical, but also, political and social. The centre is geographically where the ruler(s) resides. Politically, centre is the entity with which/whom, power rests. Socially, the opinion makers are considered the centre. During colonisation, the coloniser becomes the most power politically. The coloniser is the opinion maker, and, geographically, they rule the colony based out of their homeland. The aim of the centre is to bring into their influence, the occupants of the margin or periphery. . I have chosen a visual text(movie) called, "Equilibrium" to better understand and explain the concept of the centre–margin relationship. The movie is a science–fiction and is set in the future after the third world war. Thesis On Might Is Right Might is Right Might is Right is a concept followed and agreed with by many leaders from all over the world, from every part of history, and even from novels and fairy tales. "The Sword in the Stone", by T.H. White, is about a young boy called Wart who grows up to be King Arthur and about the changes in his childhood. Wart's mentor, Merlyn, knows that Wart will be king one day, and helps to prepare Wart for his role as an adult through lessons. These lessons have to do with all sorts of things that will help Wart in his life, such as making good decisions and using wisdom. In the article, Clark states, "True leaders have confidence but know when it becomes hubris". This proves that many people out there believe that these positive qualities are what make a good leader. On the other hand, many also believe that a being a kind or good leader doesn't automatically make you an effective leader. Others believe that the best type of ruler is what that has total control. In the article "15 Characteristics Effective Leader", Robert Tanner expresses, "They are clear about what needs to be done, they challenge assumptions, they accept and use conflict as needed...". This quote represents being a harsh, no nonsense leader, taking more control over the people, and not letting people question a leader's authority. • 13. Machiavelli 's The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince is a book that examines the qualities and strategies required for a ruler in order to maintain power. Despite being composed in the 16th century, the ideas presented are applicable even to mythical kings from texts over a thousand years ago. Throughout the story of Seneca's Oedipus, substantial connections could be made between Oedipus and The Prince's ideas of rule, such as methods in acquiring principalities, channeling subjects' fear, the use of cruelty and controlling circumstance. In this essay, I will first talk about these ideas presented in The Prince, then suggest how Machiavelli might evaluate the character, strategies, leadership, and fortunes of Seneca's Oedipus. In spite of the danger he faces, he does not shy away from the opportunity of saving the city. Although Oedipus experiences great difficulty in attaining power, Machiavelli would have faith in his ability to maintain it, because Oedipus acquires his principality through his own arms and ability. Furthermore, Machiavelli presents ideas about the qualities that rulers should have in order to avoid contempt in Chapter XIX: What will make him despised is being considered inconstant, frivolous, effeminate, pusillanimous and irresolute... Governance by non–philosophers is to be governed by opinions, beliefs and self–interest; in contrast the philosopher ruler will govern with virtue and justice with no hidden agenda. The philosopher is in love, in love with learning, knowledge and truth. We'd already worked tirelessly, but were planning one last test run before going to bed. The robot was driving over the ramp when, all of a sudden, it stopped. The tank treads that we had researched and trusted had snapped in half. Most of us yelled in frustration, but not our team leaders, Max and Matt. They picked up the robot, brought it back to the work table, and within an hour, they had orchestrated a creative solution to the snapped tread. Watching the way they managed the situation, I felt inspired: I was only a freshman but I wanted to know what they knew. Over the course of the next two years, I learned from Max and Matt the different ways to cut metal, how to solder wire, how to write basic code for the robot, and how to design mechanisms that would ensure the greatest reliability. I learned how to document my work in an engineering notebook and how to explain to judges the way our team operates. As I gained more experience and grew more committed to the team, I began to come into the robotics lab during lunch and on Sundays. I was always eager to keep working. By my junior year, I was ready to take on a leadership role. It is a general public in which one individual, administration, or a gathering of people, rules subjectively. The Sovereign activities total expert and is not bound by any law, he as a man remains outside law. The savant Thomas Hobbes supported such a general public, saying that a general public would be better on the off chance that it had one supreme ruler as he would be allowed to pick and do what he supposes is best for the general public without considering the suppositions of others. To start with, it is vital to characterize the two frameworks. A legislative framework ruled by men is any framework in which fallen man coordinates the course of the country. This incorporates not just tyrannies and theocracies where one man or a chosen few call the greater part of the shots, additionally vote based systems where lion's share supposition rules with no restrictions or securities for minority sentiment and individual freedom. As indicated by our Founding Fathers, majority rule governments were as perilous as any type of government. Benjamin Franklin characterized popular government as "three wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch," and clarified that genuine freedom is "an all around outfitted sheep challenging the vote." A hero is commonly considered a god, a being with great power that is brave enough to save whole cities. The human qualities are always their greatest fault, it comes in the image of pride, ego, selfishness, and even denial. These flaws are represented by the heroes Gilgamesh and Oedipus. Gilgamesh and Oedipus undertake journeys in search of a truth that will preserve their glory. While Gilgamesh searches for immortality, Oedipus searches for a different fate, both, fearing death. However, only one reaches their their goal. Similarly, both figures are kings; rulers of communities which reflect their ruling. In Gilgamesh's epic, the people knew of his endeavors and had to live with his sporadic acts because he was their ruler and accepted him as so. As declared, "Day and night his behavior became overbearing. He was their shepherd, yet powerful, superb, knowledgeable and expert, Gilgamesh would not leave young girls alone,"(199), and it is a positive reflection of his ruling due to the community accepting his antics through their approval of his leadership. On the other hand, Oedipus' ruling was a negative concept on the fate of the people. The people see his flaws and have their doubts of his rule once they realize he is the root of their suffering, yet do not fully accept the reality of the situation. The authors of these two documents had almost completely opposite ideas of how a ruler should behave and how a government should be run. Machiavelli believed that to rule the prince must do things that would win approval with his people, and that the prince must always keep and maintain arms to remain in power. Finally one major difference is that Machiavelli believes that the ruler should always keep arms and be ready to fight off a threat. Lao–tzu has the idea that the only need to keep arms is for a last resort when all other options have been exhausted. This is an enormous difference; The Prince gives the idea that by not maintaining a military and a willingness to fight the ruler may be over thrown by either another country or by his own people. Lao–tzu gives the idea that if you rule properly you will not need the weapon except in the most extreme circumstances. He also gives the idea that if a ruler tries to rule by force another force opposing the ruler will come to him. The group members would rotate places to double check the angle measure to ensure accuracy. The difficulties in this project was obtaining the data from the ground because it was difficult to get underneath the protractor to see the angle; someone was on the ground looking up at the building leaving room for interpretation of the angle measure. This process could have been done differently by choosing a spot with a lower vantage point. Those she had created were savage, greedy, and sinful. It displeased her. However, she was merciful and could not bring herself to destroy them, so instead felt it necessary to guide them. To assist her she created a new type of people, one who would embody all that she valued. These people would be rulers and would rule over the other citizens. A timocracy first comes into being due to human error of the guardians. The guardians are not perfect, so when choosing the next generation of guardians to educate, they will not always choose the best candidates. Since the current guardians will not always select the children with gold souls, the aristocracy will eventually degenerate into a less just society. Some new rulers will attempt to preserve the old and just ways, while the less benevolent rulers will want private property among guardians, creating tension in the ruling class. Men will start to "pervert the laws in that direction," that direction being for profit (550d11). Wealth is then equated to honor, and naturally things deemed honorable are those that citizens seek to achieve. A change is made in the city's fundamental governing doctrine; the change states that only those with a certain amount of wealth can rule the city. This is the birth of the oligarchic regime. Only citizens of a certain economic status have any political power. Those who have the political power then wish to keep the power, and will abuse their lawmaking ability to oppress the poor. Rulers will do whatever they can to keep the poor where they are, so that the lower class cannot replace the current rulers as lawmakers. The factions of rich and poor create a city doomed to fail. All the problems of the oligarchy can be traced back to equating wealth to honor and the descent from timocracy to the oligarchy itself. Socrates notes 5 distinct problems of the oligarchy, the first being the distribution of political power. Due to the standard of wealth required in the city, a wise, just, and virtuous man could not become a ruler if he is poor. If a true philosopher–king existed, but was poor, he could not rule the city. Swiftness and strength is deemed necessary as the guardian is to be like a well–bred watchdog, who ought to be "quick to see, and swift to overtake the enemy when they see him, and strong too, if when they have caught him, they have to fight with him." What is more emphasized by Socrates is that there should be balance in the study of both gymnastics and music, and that these studies should be properly harmonized. Those who neglect gymnastics will tend be soft, but on the other hand, those who likewise neglect music will tend to savagery. In this form of government the ruler will typically have trusted advisers but besides simple recommendations they have no real power. An absolute government has all aspects such as religion, political standing and economy decided by its ruler. In 1961 thomas hobbes wrote that the passions that incline men to peace are the fear of death. When a man wants something he can fight and take a chance to get it. Most men fear that chance as they may die and lose everything, but the thought of coming out on top is enough to encourage these actions in individuals. These individuals can incite others who would have normally turned down the challenge. In a case when the odds are not in favor of those goals set by an individual leading others one must not hesitate with what must be done. Hobbes understood that if there was no concise ruler that there was a sort of stutter when doing things taking action required to go through the proper channels. When 10 men are in control they must all agree but when only one man is in control all that must be done is let them decide entirely. When Bossuet talks about power he states that it must be employed with fear and self restraint as it is a blessing bestowed upon the ruler by god. The tone here is a bit harsh as the griot points to his audience and tells them they know nothing of what is meant for them. The greater authority would be the territorial rulers, which was the Kings, Princes, Queens, or Dukes that became the focal point of decision–making in the territory. The territorial rulers wanted to defend their territory, and so, they needed more revenues to fund for wars. Moreover, wars were crucial in that period, as they were becoming bigger and more expensive. The only way that territorial rulers could gain revenue was from its subjects such as the towns, villages, churches, or aristocrats (Lecture 2). It was almost impossible use coercion and forced the elites to pay. This way was not efficient, and was prone to greater revolts and resistance. Hence, the only ideal way was to come up with a bargain. The bargain may involve giving benefits such as permanent taxations, better security and welfare to the elites, so that they may give up their powers. The rulers were not able to fight efficient wars if the subjects were not willing to support them. Moreover, the aristocrats rule over a huge chunk of the military fights, which make it difficult for rulers to control the war, if the military subjects were mainly controlled by the elites. But does an atlatl really lengthen how far a dart travels compared to throwing the dart by hand? Based on accumulated information, the hypothesis was: If an atlatl is used to throw a dart, then it will lengthen the distance that the dart will travel compared to throwing it by hand. This is because the atlatl is a lever that acts as another joint of the arm, increasing both the leverage, force, and energy of a throw. To test this, I created an atlatl using a wooden branch with a spur sticking out of it, paracord, a rock, tape, a bamboo stick, duct tape, knife, and a saw. I carved the wooden branch to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Aztecs used the atlatl in war in the fight with the Spanish conquistadors, as well as to fish. The name atlatl is actually coined from the Aztec word atlatl, meaning water thrower. Though there are many variations of the atlatl, the basis of it stays the same. It was generally made with 3 major parts: the handle, the shaft, and the spur. The handle is what was held in the hand, the shaft is between the handle and spur, and the spur is a slightly inclined point that fits into a small hole at the end of a dart. The atlatl is known to have other additions to it. For example, a stone weight was sometimes added which acts as a counterbalance between the atlatl and the dart. It also resists acceleration, which allows for the dart to store more energy in itself before it pushes off. Some say use of a weight also lessens the whistling sound that an atlatl can make as it speeds through the air, enabling for a silent and deadly weapon. Another addition to the atlatl is a wrist loop which prevents the atlatl from flying off of the hand as the dart ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Machiavelli’s Views on Government Essay At first glance Machiavelli's writings could be mistaken for evil and satanic beliefs, but in reality there are many good underlying points as to how to rule a nation. I believe that the New Yorker's description of Machiavelli is the best example of his life and beliefs, because it not only touches upon the high points, but the low points of beliefs as well. The New Yorker goes into great detail about how Machiavelli came up from a mid level family to achieve a role as a government official/ "ambassador" just to be thrown in prison after years of trying to stabilize and unify an unstable country through means of war and fear. Machiavelli wasn't only a government official he was a strategic genius, but only because as ambassador he had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, Machiavelli wrote about the young leader Borgia who conquered many nations in the name of Spain. He explained how it was necessary for "a prince... to work against what is merciful, loyal, humane, upright, and scrupulous.". This makes a ruler look bad, however in reality what the ruler does make a ruler look bad may improve the quality of the nations he is conquering and ruling. Machiavelli wrote that Borgia conquered many nations, but these nations had weak rulers, who had let the nations become over run with crime and filth, but once conquered by Borgia and his men were brought up to a good quality standard with less crime and more peace and order, due to the enforcement of Spanish law. That is why Machiavelli's misconceived writings were actually meant to show that even though a ruler may look bad in people's eyes, his actions actually create good within the nations he controls. A more recent example of a leader who would fit under Machiavelli's theory was Adolf Hitler. Hitler was an extremist whose views should never be tolerated, but in reality he had helped his people get out of an economic depression and improved the quality of life for many Germans. What Machiavelli is trying to imply is to be a good leader isn't to be the most well liked person, but to get results that improve people's lives even if you have to be seen in a negative light. Analysis Of ' The Education Of Cyrus ' Rohan Baishya HUEN 1010 – Dr. Brooks Short Paper #2 Due 03/20/17 In The Education of Cyrus, Xenophon addresses a critical query immediately in questioning how one can rule over human beings without opposition or revolt. Xenophon initially reasons that no regime can effectively do that, but after seeing the education and life of Cyrus, he argues that ruling all others without revolution is not only plausible, but "not even difficult if done with knowledge." Through his education and virtues, Cyrus acquired the knowledge to not only be a successful king, but rule over the entire known world, effectively proving to Xenophon that it is possible to rule over all human beings successfully. This system where people are rewarded for their virtues motivates the people he rules to stand by him and becomes the basis for what Cyrus calls justice in his empire. Despite these virtuous courses of actions Cyrus learned to take, Xenophon points out that successful military strategy and diplomacy cannot be procured unless one has virtues such as discipline, drive, compliance, prudence, generosity, and valor that Cyrus displays and acquires through his life and education. Xenophon emphasizes that as necessary as superior battle strategies, competent and willing allies, appealing laws, and diplomacy are, they do not amount to anything without a virtuous leader educated in leading in such a manner as Cyrus was. Cyrus, rather than marching onwards and leaving a path of destruction in his wake as many empire– builders of his time did, instead won the favors of the people he defeated, keeping their homes and cultures intact yet also not only giving them the opportunity to join him, but having them want to be ruled by him. • 61. The Rule Of St. Benedict And Beowulf The Rule of St. Benedict and Beowulf both provide images of an ideal ruler and an ideal subject. For the Rule of St. Benedict, they are the good abbot and the proper monk. In Beowulf, the good warrior–king and the loyal members of his warrior band. These images of the ruler and subject of each book are very similar and different as well as show the bad view of rulers and subjects and the books show the value systems of those writing the texts. These pieces of literature, how different they may seem, are relatively alike. First and foremost, they are alike in the ways of how they present their ruler. In Beowulf, King Hrothgar is wise as he gives his sermon to Beowulf. "At last his part of pride within him waxes and climbs, the watchman of the soul slumbering the while. That sleep is too deep, tangled in its cares! Too close is the slayer who shoots the wicked shaft from his bow! For all his armour he is unable to protect himself: the insidious bolt buries in his chest, the crooked counsels of the accursed one" (63) Which warns of the dangers of pride and fame which is something that an abbot was supposed to say towards a monk. Another way their rulers are somewhat similar is that they are both known to be father figures. Abbots are supposed to be "devoted and tender as only a father can be," as they say in The Rule of St. Benedict which is much like Beowulf as King Hrothgar gives him fatherly advice. Plato's examination of leaders can be considered deontologist (wherein morality determines decision–making) and idealistic whereas Machiavelli's examination is consequentialist (weighing potential consequences determines decision–making) and realistic. Using primary evidence from Plato's The Republic and Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince as well as an examination of controversial leaders like Donald Trump, I will argue that Machiavelli's ruler traits to a state are superior to Plato's since they are more realistic of human nature of political actors. PLATO'S LIVED WORLD: SETTING CONTEXT Plato lived in Ancient Athens through the Peloponnesian War and a tyrannical government. After The Thirty Tyrants, Athens established a quasi–direct democratic government and invoked a lottery system to distribute power amongst the citizenry. For Wallach, Plato's polis was "was not a world inflected by [...], totalitarian regimes, [...] political orders whose populations top one billion human beings, vast inequalities of wealth, [or] nuclear–tipped drones." Ancient Athens was a polis of trade, tourism and culture but it did not have the frequency/severity of modern foreign policy issues that affected its decisions. This is crucial to Plato's views on leadership and it justifies the temporal limitations of his theory. A DISCUSSION OF PLATO'S PHILOSOPHICAL SOUL Plato's The Republic establishes ... • 70. Machiavelli : The Power Of The Prince As A Prince Machiavelli also goes to mentioning how a Prince can become a prince with four of the principles he has listed in the text. It is said that one "Cannot be called prowess to kill fellow citizens, to betray friends, to be treacherous, pitiless, irreligious. These ways can win a prince power but not glory," (Pg.174) This statement was to show how a prince can come to power through the use of crime, the second one is hereditary. In most cases the prince is the next one for the throne and to lead so it's an easier transition for a prince in this category. According to the text, those who fear, are the ones who are dependent on the prince who ultimately become the loyal ones, where as the enemies of the prince are always those who are dependent and have the aid of the army such as the nobles. The wealth, army and knowledge is all passed down. The third principle is by the constitutional principality, "A man who becomes prince by favor of the people finds himself standing alone, and he has near him either no one or very few not prepared to take orders," (pg.175) here Machiavelli goes on to mentioning how becoming prince through popular vote is often a disaster because not every noble man is ready to take orders from a prince who got voted to be prince and has no skills to be one. Here we can see how the ignorance and selfish arrogance in man kind is revealed. Machiavelli is always brutally honest when describing men kind and their behaviors in politics. The forth principle is the honoring of the prince on his words. According to the text, Machiavelli insists that a prince should always stick to his words because men are wretched creatures who would not keep their word to you, you need not keep your word to the them. And no prince ever lacked good excuses to color his bad faith." (pg.180) here we see how Machiavelli mentions the cunning games that go on in the minds of man kind. This shows how being "virtuous" is not significant for Machiavelli where as it is for Plato, since Machiavelli has seen it all happen before his eyes. • 72. The Tenants Of A Foolproof Governmental System What are the tenants of a foolproof governmental system? How does one man or a group lead a much larger society to prosper and grow? These are hard questions to answer, but there have been a few key figures in history who have tried to answer them. Among the earliest texts on this topic, Confucius' Analects give some key insights into the topic. He seems to think the key to this perfect government is for the leader and the people to be a "gentleman". Plato brings a more detailed view on the topic with his The Republic. He decides that the key is to have everyone specialized in the job they have the most aptitude in. Then comes Machiavelli and his The Prince, with his seemingly pessimistic view on life, to give stricter rules for the leader to follow. He says to always be prepared in war and to put up a façade of virtue while doing what needs to be done in the background. Once someone takes all three of these texts into context, they can begin to form a picture how ancient and even modern governments are and have been run. Although, one has to keep in mind that each of these men also thought they had the definite answer to this perfect society, so keep studying their and even more modern works. Confucius' main attribute for a model government was a model leader that the people could follow and try to mimic. This leader should be virtuous and a "gentleman" while studying history and ritual. Plato clearly favors the reason in his three part soul, since it is with reason that one can grasp the Forms, which themselves are the ultimate in beauty and truth. To this end, the State, like the individual, has three parts that correspond to the parts of the individual soul. The "lowest" of the parts is the appetite, which is comprised of the common people. These would be craftsmen, laborers, and farmers who perform the menial tasks essential to the functioning of the State. Those who make up this part of the State are best left to their own devices, to enjoy and pursue physical and material pleasures, because they are not capable of grasping the Forms. The second tier, the spirit, would be comprised of soldiers. It is the soldiers who have a slight understanding of the Forms, but not enough of one to allow reason to dictate their actions.
