Analysis Of A Thousand Splendid Suns
On the other hand, Khaled Hosseini employs an open plot structure in A Thousand Splendid Suns in
order to comment on the effect of assiduity on the possibility of escaping an oppressive
environment. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, Hosseini illustrates his narrative through the parallel
plotline of his two protagonists–Mariam and Laila–to design an open, chronological plot structure.
Through the first sentence of A Thousand Splendid Suns, Hosseini establishes that "Mariam was
five years old the first time she heard the word harami" (Hosseini 3). Hosseini's purposeful decision
of introducing his main character before all other elements such as the setting and supporting
characters illustrates his protagonists' significance in the construction of the plot structure's
foundation. In order to establish an open, chronological plot structure, Hosseini constantly reminds
the readers of the progression of time through the inclusion of the year and Mariam's age. For
instance, in the exposition of chapter five, Hosseini declares, "It was the spring of 1974, the year
Mariam turned fifteen" (Hosseini 25). Then in chapter fifteen–the last chapter of the first part–
Hosseini once again states, "On April 17, 1978, the year Mariam turned nineteen..." (Hosseini 97).
Hosseini purposely includes the date along with Mariam's increasing age throughout the chapters for
the readers to become cognizant of the novel's chronological format. In addition to illustrating the
progression of time through Mariam, Hosseini also mirrors the same structure for his second
protagonist, Laila. In the second part of A Thousand Splendid Suns, Hosseini prefaces the chapter
with the header–Kabul, Spring 1987. Immediately below the header, Hosseini begins the chapter by
stating, "Nine–year–old Laila rose from bed, as she did most morning, hungry for the sight of her
friend Tariq" (Hosseini 107). By introducing Laila through the identical structure utilized when first
presenting Mariam, Hosseini provides hints of his wish for readers to juxtapose the two females.
Furthermore, by introducing nine–year old Laila twenty–three years after the introduction of five–
year old Mariam, Hosseini was able to illustrate Laila's plotline in relation to Mariam's

The Role of the Double Plot in King Lear and Hamlet Essay
King Lear and Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, are two plays that reveal similar thematic elements,
yet possess fundamentally different plot structures. Driven by the suffering and rage of two
complementary characters, both plays suggest injustice through 'good', but ultimately flawed
characters. This shared overarching theme is, however, conveyed differently within each of the
works, as one employs two mainly disparate plot threads, while the other relies more heavily on the
interaction between the two central plots. Yet the ultimate purpose of this dualism remains the same
within both King Lear and Hamlet, in that Shakespeare's use of the double plot illuminates the tragic
elements within both plays, emphasizing core injustices through ... Show more content on

This dichotomy between external blames and internal repentance is used by Shakespeare to
demonstrate the tragic nature of King Lear from more than one plane, showing how two different
personalities respond to two similar fates. In "Hamlet" however, this clear symmetry is replaced
with a more muddled intertwinement. Rather than maintaining two relatively separate plot threads in
the journeys of Lear and Gloucester, Shakespeare opts to interweave the motivations and fates of
Laertes and Hamlet, using their conflict as the central dynamic, while their parallels take a reduced
role. In this sense, while King Lear is driven solely by the dualism of the story, Hamlet relies on the
clash of the two plots to suggest injustice. This injustice, through conflict, is shown most
prominently in Hamlet's and Laertes' duel at the end of the play. Hamlet, describing Laertes as a "a
very noble youth." (5.1.231), reveals a respect towards his foe that suggests that it is circumstance,
not choice, that forces his hand. Similarly, Laertes' singular goal, "To this point I stand, that both the
worlds I give to negligence, let come what comes, only I'll be revenged most thoroughly for my
father." (4.5.151–154) shows that his wrath is fueled solely by duty, such that his pursuit of revenge
imparts upon him a single–minded myopia that drives him inexorably towards the final conflict.
Ironically, upon meeting Claudius after hearing of his father's death, Laertes asks "How came he

The distinction between the plot and story of a film can be difficult to distinguish. These elements
both play an important role in communicating the movie maker's ideas to the viewers. However, the
key differences between the plot and story of a film revolve around their main functions and based
on how they interact with the key components of the narrative. The plot of a film lays out all of the
events that take place in the exact order presented and can utilize a variety of developmental
elements to move the film from the beginning to the end. The story of a film is the culmination of
the plot, along with additional inferred information that was mentioned implicitly or explicitly
throughout the film in chronological order which illustrates ... Show more content on

The plot is broken up into three different section and shows the protagonist Anna Marie as three
different ages. This is a simple example of a temporal plot gap. The plot doesn't provide any
information in between the different sections to give any insight on what took place in Anna Marie's
life throughout the years that passed. This is an example where the plot gap doesn't get a resolution
and the event is completely disregarded. The story can only be created in a viewer has something to
base an inference off of in order to fill the plot gap. The exclusion of this information allows the
viewer to recognize that the time she aged in between the sections is not relevant to the overall story
and shows that there are more important aspects of the film to focus on in order to reveal the whole
story. Another instance in this film that illustrates the distinction between plot and story involves the
use of parallelism. In the second section of the film there is a scene Anna Marie watches over a cow
as it dies. The camera cuts to a close up of the cows eyes tearing up and then to a close up of Anna
Marie's eye tearing up. The similarity of the angle at which Anna Marie and the cow were filmed
signified that there was something important to be taken away from that scene because it put so
much focus on those two subjects. This was not explicitly presented in the plot, but the use of
parallelism to focus the viewers' attention to Anna Marie and the cow in that moment was an
indicator that the scene was relevant to the

Susan Glaspell 's Trifles And A Jury Of Her Peers
Although "A Jury of Her Peers" and "Trifles" are similar in plot, Mustazza's article, "Generic
Translation and Thematic Shift in Susan Glaspell's 'Trifles' and 'A Jury of Her Peers'" highlights the
differences and similarities between the two. Mustazza's article may help aid readers to understand
the differences between Glaspell's two works and provide understanding as to why Glaspell may
have changed the genre and form of the plot. "Trifles" is a dramatic play whereas "A Jury of Her
Peers" is prose fiction. While some differences may be seen on the surface, other differences will
need to be inspected closely. Mustazza's article may help one to understand Glaspell's works by
providing analysis and additional perspectives on both "A Jury of her Peers" and "Trifles".
The most obvious difference between Glaspell's two works is the title. The play is entitled "Trifles"
whereas the prose version is called "A Jury of Her Peers". Both titles draw the attention of the
audience to different parts of the plot. "Trifles" highlights the "trivial household items" in the plot
whereas "A Jury of Her Peers" accentuates the women's roles and how they question what is morally
right (Mustazza 489). Mustazza's article provides background knowledge and a reason why Glaspell
may have changed and retitled the prose version. Since women were in the final years of fighting for
the right to vote in 1917, changing the title from "Trifles" to "A Jury of Her Peers" made the piece

Literary Analysis Of 'Rome Fever, And Edith Wharton'sRoman...
Roman Fever: W, A New Leaf: L Critical literary analysis can be used in many ways: simply to
understand a story's purpose, the story's characters, and many other aspects to understand a story
fully. Critical literary analysis can also be used to try to determine an opinion between two books
and their value as a story. In the case between "Roman Fever" written by Edith Wharton and F. Scott
Fitzgerald's "A New Leaf", "Roman Fever" is the superior story between the two. After in depth
analysis of both stories, "Roman Fever" deserves the higher ranking simply because of its literary
elements. "Roman Fever" written by Edith Wharton has a more complex plot structure than "A New
Leaf". The plot structure in a "Roman Fever" is more complex because it is not simply
chronological. The story does use a chronological structure to describe how long the two characters
have been sitting together, and to further the story, but there are mentions of the past that divert from
the chronological order. These glimpses into the past from the characters, Alida Slade and Grace
Ansley, add artistic unity to the story, meaning that these flashbacks cannot be removed, otherwise
the story would not be comprehendible. The purpose of "Roman Fever" is not the plot but the
characters and their relationship, and the change and develop of Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansley. This
alone rank "Roman Fever" above "A New Leaf" because "A New Leaf" relies heavily on
chronological plot structure and the plot to truly drive the story. The plot also ties in heavily the
stereotype of the pattern of three's. Julia rejects both Dick and Phil twice before accepting them both
on the third time. Many of the analysis questions for "A New Leaf" focus on the plot rather than
anything else, including two about Phil and Dick and plot, "4. What causes Julia to reject Dick,
twice? What in his behavior causes her rejections, and what in her character causes them? 5. What is
the function of Phil Hoffman in the plot? Why does Julia reject him, and why does she finally marry
him?" The characters of "Roman Fever" are dynamic in a literary way and are the main focus of the
story. If the relationship between the two characters, and the characters themselves, were not made

The Other Wes Moore Plot Structure
"The Other Wes Moore" is written by Wes Moore himself. In the book "The other Wes Moore" there
is two black African American boys who share the same name but, ended up in different paths in
life. Both boys have absent fathers for their various reason and with mothers being the head of the
household. The purpose of the story is to illustrate how nurture is responsible for a individual
success. Author Wes Moore uses parallel plot structure, flashbacks, and diction to prove that nurture
determines an individual success.
"The Other Wes Moore" use parallel plot structure to display the similarities and differences
between the two Wes's in their environments. In the story, Wes explains why his mom decided to
send him to military school. According to the text it says "she felt my environment needed to change
and my options needed to expand". Thus, Wes's mother cared about Wes's future so ... Show more

In the story, author Wes has got older and has become wiser. He began to rant about how he became
the successful man he is today with the help of his "mom, grandparents, uncles, and aunts," who was
"pushing to see more than what was directly" in front of him. Thus, Author Wes was surround by
positive people in his life who push him past limits and they wanted to him be greater than what
they were themselves. The other Wes had no positive guidance into his future even though his
brother who was in the drug game tried to redirect him as well, Wes still didn't listen. Tony thought
Wes could be better then what he was. He thought Wes had some much potential in him. "You can
lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink, right," exclaimed by Tony while speaking
wisdom to Wes. Therefore, the use of diction shows how Wes wronged hum self but, at the same
time his surroundings weren't as positive as well. In a sum, the use of diction portrayed by the Wes

Structure And Form In Sophocles Antigone
"Tragedy , then is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude; in
language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate
parts of the play; in the form of action, not of narrative; through pity and fear effecting the proper
purgation of these emotions" (Aristotle VI). When one reads a tragedy, a series of emotions are
conducted throughout ones' body and those emotions are the connection between literature and art.
If one were to look at a group of seemingly meaningless words manifested on a piece of paper it
would give the thought of confusion, but when the words are naturally streamed together the sense
of unity embraces a beautiful arrangement of parts. The necessity of structure and form in literature
and art are necessary for the success of the work. A piece of fabric will never become a beautiful
dress without the outline therefore, the structure and form give the literature and art a place to grow
and flourish. The needed structure and form allows the focal point of the piece to be listened to. In
Antigone, Sophocles exercises "the soul of a tragedy"(Aristotle IV), plot, by seductively piecing
events in an appealing way, chronologically. The chronologic ability in poetry is essential, however
when a plot becomes episodic, "acts succeed one another without probable or necessary sequence"
(Aristotle IX) it grows foreseeable. In poetry it is not the poet's responsibility to tell what has

Plot Of The Novel ' The Hunger Games '
The plot is a very important part of a story. If there was not a plot structure; it would be a very
boring story. That is if they could even make a story at all. Every story has to have some kind of
plot. A short story might be able to have a simple plot, but a movie or novel would have to have one,
or who would pay for the movie or book. Even though, there has to be some kind of plot; that might
not be the main purpose of the book. The important part, that draws people in could also be the
characters. The girl that is reading The Hunger Games, might not be reading it because she wants to
what happens next. It could be that she loves Katniss Everdeen, and wants to keep reading about her.
Of course there has to be a plot or there would be no reason to keep reading; it just might not be the
main focus. The storyline of the reading material is called a plot. The plot has a structure containing
exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and the resolution. Exposition is the introduction of
the story. In the short story, "A Family Supper" the exposition is when he is talking about the
poisonous fish, Fugu, and how his mother had died from eating it. During this time, it also talks
about the conflict between him and his parents. This is how readers know that while him and his dad
are talking that there is tension there. The conflict keeps the reader in suspense, wondering why he
went to America, until they read where his sister, later, asks about a girl

The Malnart Soldier Plot Structure
The Roman comedy and the modern sitcom have very similar plot structure as the modern sitcom
has its roots in Roman comedy. The roman comedy we watched was "The Braggart Soldier" by
Plautus. The sitcom I chose for my comedy assignment is Modern Family. The sitcom is based on 3
families that interact with one another in comedic ways.
The plot of the roman comedy, "The Braggart Soldier," starts with the prologue during which all the
characters are introduced and two describe how they became slaves of Pyrgopolyneices and the
basic ideas of the plan to trick him into letting them leave with Pluesicles and go to Athens. Then,
all the characters except Palestrio leave the set. Next, the plan starts with a soldier, Pyrgopolyneices,
entering the stage and he boasts about the battles he won. Palestrio agrees with Pyrgopolyneices and
then lies to him about the woman in the house next door and about how she loves Pyrgopolyneices.
Palestrio tells him that his wife, Philocomasium's mother has arrived to take her away to Athens, and
that he should allow her to keep all the jewelry and the clothes that he has given to her, when she

Factors On The Effect Of Elevation Effects On Plant Growth
Elevations Effects on Plant Growth
James Walters, 8/25/2017, Biology 132–01, Alan Liang & Jillian Beard
Introduction
Plants rely on the environment in which they live to grow, and different environmental conditions
provide a wide array of different foliage. Many studies have concluded that altitude effects the
heights of a variety of different species (1). In a study comparing beech tree growth, factors such as
light and nutrient availability were shown to increase as tree height increased. Along with these
findings, it was found that growth rate declined as altitude increased (2). Another study observing
elevations effect on Malosma Laurinais showed that increased altitudes were correlated with
stronger and healthier leaves for the plants (3). Plants primarily rely on water, and sunlight to grow,
but other factors play a role in development as well. Elevation can have a drastic impact on the
speciation and growth of different plant species for many reasons. Surface level determines soil
moisture content, wind speed, and the amount of sunlight that a plot of vegetation will receive.
Common knowledge of how plants grow, suggest that the high soil moisture content at low
elevations will increase plant height due to the excess of resources being provided.
Plants in the campus lodge area in Brocton, NY have a vast variety of different growing conditions
and climates. We decided to examine if different soil elevations had an impact on the growth of
plants in this area. Foliage

Happy Endings By Margaret Atwood
A Real Ending
Happy endings are made for children that can 't handle the harsh reality that is life. For the majority
of the readers that can understand this situation, endings are rarely happy and are usually sad,
depressing, or just lackluster. Margaret Atwood and her short story Happy Endings point out the
truth of stories and show an effective way to write a story at the same time. With the use of imagery,
symbolism, and wordplay, Atwood changes the meaning and feeling of her story. As well, as
knowing the reader 's point of view Atwood changes the meaning, and the way way the story is read

With the use of imagery in this way you can get a small insight inside the mind of Mary. Where the
decline of positivity in her imagery, shows how even Mary is skeptical of her feelings towards John.
A similar feeling happens again in section C, Where the reader doesn 't know what 's going on
between John and Mary, except this time mary is using John while madly in love with James. When
James and Mary get together "Everything 's becomes very underwater" (Atwood 19). The feeling of
being drifted around and going with the flow brings life to the story. Much like the relationship that
Mary and James have together, they just hold their breath and hope for the best as the tides bring
conflict and excitement into their lives. On the other hand, John who has a stimulating and
challenging life, and committed to his wife Madge, felt uncontrollable jealousy and killed not only
Mary and James, But also himself. The Reader can gather from the way that Atwood wrote this
story, that Mary just wanted to be a free spirit, and John was tired of his mundane life but to scared
to change anything. The plot and style of her stories with the combination imagery makes the reader
feel attached to the characters and grabs your attention. This is because Atwood adds conflict,
drama, and descriptive words that provoke emotion. This is an effective writing technique that can

Literary Reflection
Intent and purpose of this class
The intent of this class is to give the student a well–rounded overview of the basic parts of a short
story or novel. These include plot, character, point of view, strong openings to a story, dialogue and
writing enhancement. It is intended to help writers. It is not intended to be a literary criticism class.
I will also provide a brief overview of genre, marketability and marketing promotion. I will review
work for content and structure. I will not "copyedit" the student's work. My focus will not be on
grammar or sentence structure.
I will give homework assignments and it is helpful to finish the assignments. But we may move onto
the next assignment if you haven't completed in the assignment within a few days.
Lesson one: The Plot in the Story
Introduction
Good stories have a beginning, middle and end. But editors look for the plot arc, or some variation
of it. If you are an established, well–recognized author you might tweak The arc model, but the rest
of us must slug through it. And for good reason. The arc will pull your reader through the story. It is
the reason why your reader will turn the pages until the very end. It also helps the writer focus their
story line, cut out the parts that are slowing it down, and highlight the parts that help move the story.
Trust me, in the end The arc will be your friend.
If all of this comes as a surprise to you then you have been reading wonderful books or watching

Analysis Of The Movie ' Chinatown '
Chinatown is a drama/thriller starring Jack Nicholson who played the character of Jake Gittes. The
plot of the story develops around Gittes job as a private investigator, and Gittes researches the
background information of the water system for Los Angeles. Through Gittes investigation, the
sudden death of Mr. Mulwray becomes the main plot line of the story. Ms. Mulwray, the wife hires
Jake Gittes to investigate her husband for infidelity, but through his inspecting, he starts to uncover
the truths within the Los Angeles water system. The characters of the film have a strange connection
with each other, which makes the story rich in depth. This is powerful for the viewer because the
potential of the plot can be expanded with extraordinary plot twists and character development.
Personally, I thought the Roman Polanski constructed a phenomenal movie, because of the drama
aspect. The conflict was clear thirty minutes into the film, and the direction of the film perfectly kept
the audience glued to the plot of the movie. Chinatown provides effective elements of drama
through intensive detail, and a strong plot; which makes the movie highly entertaining. Rules of the
Game are an important concept to creating a drama, and I enjoyed many of the subtle details of
Chinatown. Polanski directs the film with a noir setting to make his audience carefully indulge in
every aspect of the film. The setting of 1930's Los Angeles truly intrigued me as viewer, because the
setting felt nostalgic

Narrative Progression In Margaret Atwood's 'Happy Endings'
"Happy Endings" is a short story written by Margaret Atwood. The story is different than what
readers may be used to because it doesn't follow a traditional plot line. Instead, Margaret's story
follows an experimental "narrative progression". This type of story progression is a way that an
author can manipulate, contort, or obscure the "5 Stages of Plot" structure (Hillard, "Point of View
in Fiction"). In this essay, I will explore how experimental "narrative progression" is used in "Happy
Endings", how it works in the story, how it relates to the story, and my opinion on experimental
"narrative progression" in Margaret Atwood's "Happy Endings". How is experimental "narrative
progression" used in "Happy Endings"? This type of story progression is used in this story because
the story as a whole doesn't go in order of a traditional plot line. The first story (the original story)
serves as the ending for each of the other versions that Margaret provides for the reader. Each of the
new versions follow the same characters as in the original story, but they lead different lives. For
example, in the original story the two characters fall in love with each other but in the next version
of that story the man doesn't love the woman even though she still loves the man. Also, "Happy
Endings" uses experimental "narrative progression" because there are several beginnings and
middles based on the story as a whole. However, there is only one ending which is the original story.

Parallel Plot Structure Of Wes Moore

book goes into great detail on how one became a convicted criminal serving a life sentence and one

can't hit people and particularly women. You must defend them not fight them.... My father and I
start for another 5 minutes before he led downstairs to apologize to my sister and my mother. (page
11)" This exposure to Wes further plays in later parts of his life. For example where Wes was attack
by a racist he chooses not to fight back because he has flashbacks to these experiences. Of his early
life and how people educated him to always be formable. The style that Wes was taught shine in
this, if you read through the book. The book doesn't mention of Wes ever getting himself into fights.
Thus pomp a glorious procession of Nurture conquering over Nature in what determines success.
Another instance where Wes is instructed to be more courteous. It is said in the book and it reads
"you kids are way too young to be in this situation but you know what I see kids like you every day
If you don't get smart I am certain I will see you again that's the sad part ... the cops gave us a gift

Plot Structures In A Sound Of Thunder By Aldous Hudbury
"Then the hero defeated the evil doer and saved the princess, winning her love with his heroism!"
Cliches like this are what society is starting to grow bored with. Many stories go with the same
classic image of the portrayals of typical character roles. Plot structures are becoming more and
more transparent with no real substance to the character's development or anything substantial to the
plot. However, some novelists are starting to branch off from that stereotypical structure into
something that differentiates themselves. Ray Bradbury, known as one the best, if not the best,
science fiction writers of our time wrote one particular short story, "A Sound of
Thunder." This piece is about a common science fiction topic, time travel. However, instead of
glorifying the wonders of time travel and the possibilities of what could be considered an idealistic
dream machine, Bradbury shows the consequences of dabbling with space and time.
Exploring themes of death, fear, and drastic change, Bradbury was no longer part of the cliche
bubble of science fiction. Another piece that greatly differentiated itself from other works of similar
topics was Aldous Huxley's piece Brave New World. This piece is satire of the societal problems of
the time it was written, during the Great Depression. The piece's "protagonist" was by no means, the
typical knight in shining armor. He had in depth character development that led to corruption instead
of salvation contrary to the common day portrayal of

Home To Harlem Analysis
In his analysis of Claude McKay's Home to Harlem, Shane Vogel refers to the text as a piece of
literature which is "invested in 'affective mimesis.'" Essentially, the text is interested in the
reproduction of feelings and senses. The success of the text is based on the audience's ability to feel
what McKay wants them to feel. Of course, this method has its limits. How will a non–black
audience capable of absorbing the material presented exactly as McKay means for it to be
interpreted? The answer to that question, of course, is that this text was not produced for
consumption by white audiences. This has been established by McKay's response to W.E.B. Du
Bois's criticisms of Home to Harlem, where it is staunchly established that McKay's portrayal of
African–American individuals is for African–Americans themselves–the text portrays a series of
experiences which can only be understood by an in–group, and that is that. Thus, McKay's "affective
mimesis," or the "elliptical sensorium of pleasure" he produces, aims not to depict Harlem as a
spectacle, but as a place in which his audience already knows and already exists in. Ultimately, the
story of Home to Harlem exemplifies a never–ending series of knowing and unknowing one's
surroundings and one's home. This is reinforced by the novel's looping plot structure. McKay's
formulation of the text does not give us an interpretation of diaspora, then–it aims to reproduce the
feeling of diaspora in our hearts. First, let us consider how the structure of the novel's plot reinforces
the dual complexity of identity and remembrance. Home to Harlem is a text defined by its
astounding structural redundancy. Regardless of one's place in the novel, it can be assumed that
similar events are going to unfold–there will be a mention of clubs or alcohol, dancing will be
involved, and Jake will surely sigh about how he has lost his "sweet brown." In instances where
Jake and his companions aren't in Harlem, Jake laments for a return to what he considers home.
Thus, aside from certain moments, such as when Jake finally finds Felice, the formulaic structure of
Home to Harlem seems doomed to repeat itself for eternity. It is during this aforementioned reunion

Analysis Of Football Play Script
A star linebacker's career is threatened by a blackmailer, and his life spirals out of control after a
debilitating tackle causes a devastating injury to his a good friend.
STORY COMMENTS
FULL CONTACT gives an intriguing inside look at the world of competitive football. It focuses on
the pressure that comes with becoming a star player. The script highlights themes about second
chances and redemption.
While there are definitely features that are well crafted, the script would benefit from further
development.
The main concern is that the script tries to tell two different storylines, each of which, are different
story types.
First, there's a drama story has some compelling elements. It focuses on the pressure of winning at
all cost. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The timeline is unknown and these scenes don't feel well contacted to the plot. Eventually, this leads
to Jake talking to a group of people. It's not the best structure to use.
As the story progresses, the structure jumps back and forth from being a drama to being a thriller.
When it focuses on Jake's life as a child on the farm, his relationship with his family, the death of his
father, his friendship with Chase, the pressure of hitting hard, questioning the equipment, Jake and
Chase's relationship arc, and Jake and Chase mentoring others about the safety of football it's
considered a drama.
When it's about Henry taking pictures of Jake and blackmailing him, and abducting his family it's a
thriller. However, this story as structured isn't fully developed. First, the years span too long for a
thriller. A thriller has to have more urgency and should be in one timeline. It's unclear how the
pictures of Chase with another woman are relevant to the plot. Consider cutting.
The subplot about Jake doing drugs isn't fully developed. Either expand this in a thriller or cut it.
One can see how it would work in a true thriller – with the blackmailer showing how he can control
and manipulate Jake, but it doesn't work as currently executed, because there's no consequence to
the allegation or

Plot Structure Of The Kite Runner
Khaled Hosseini and Arundhati Roy's novels are devised in such a way that the plot structures are
exact parallels. Thus, they can successfully use the same plot structure to portray two divergent
effects of losing one's innocence in a traumatic event. The plot structure of the novels also reinforces
the idea of innocence. The plot structure for The Kite Runner is chronological, but the plot structure
for The God of Small Things is circular. In his novel, The Kite Runner, Hosseini begins to dive into
the distinction by beginning the novel with introducing the main character, Amir, and his friend
Hassan. Hosseini makes sure to note that the two boys are from different religious clans, and so their
friendship is looked down upon. Hosseini ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The God of Small Things is out of sequence because the novel is jumbled. As a result, Arundhati
Roy uses this to reinforce the idea of a circular plot structure, where the characters are unable to
break free of the cycle. Estha tried to protect Rahel from losing her innocence once the Orangedrink
Lemondrink man molested him, but he was unable to, and as a result the twins end up having sex at
the end of the novel. However, in his novel The Kite Runner Khaled Hosseini portrays Amir as
unable to save Hassan from the rape that takes place, and instead shows Amir protecting Sohrab,
Hassan's son, who was also raped by the same person.
CONCLUSION: In both novels, Arundhati Roy and Khaled Hosseini took careful consideration
when conveying their message to readers. They both utilize similar story plots, plot structure, and
symbols that represent similar meanings. As an author, Khaled Hosseini clearly describes Amir's
journey and his reactions to specific events throughout the novel, crafting his responses in clever
ways. Arundhati Roy also employs the same technique in her novel, choosing to use a similar plot
structure, but having the characters react differently to the scenarios they face. Amir, for example,
chooses to take control of his future not allowing his past to affect his decisions, and thus Hosseini
portrays him as hopeful for the future. However, Roy, chooses to end the novel with the twins, Rahel
and Estha,

Plot Structure Of A Short Story
The story that I believe had the most effective plot structure would be The Bicycle by Jillian Horton.
The first reason I believe this is that the story was the longest one out of the other ones read in class.
This means that the author had more space to position the introduction, rising action, climax, falling
action and the conclusion in spots that made sense. After reading this short story I found that I
understood what happen better than other stories I have read in class. The second reason I believe
this story had the most effective plot is the introduction to the story. The introduction gets right to
the point introducing all of the characters and describing the setting to the readers. In the short story

Aristotle Soul Of Tragedy Analysis
For Aristotle, the unity of temporality guarantees the unity of the plot's action. The dramatic action,
being the mimesis of representation, demands a certain magnitude to expand the temporality of the
plot, "a length which allows of the hero passing by a series of probable of necessary stages from bad
fortune to good, or from good to bad, may suffice as a limit for magnitude of a story" (Aristotle,
1450b45) Aristotle uses the subject of the Odyssey as an example of a tragic plot which
encompasses the coherent totality of unity of time and unity of action, "Homer, in writing an
Odyssey, he did not make the poem cover all that ever befell his hero–it befell him" (Aristotle,
1451a25). Plot is the soul of tragedy that forms meaning necessary to make sense of human action
for the spectacle (L3, Aristotle–Tragedy). Thus, the spectator is able to reason and make probable
through the mimesis of action contain in the plots soul of tragedy.
Reversal, recognition, and suffering are elements that encompass the soul of tragedy– the plot. The
dramatic plot, the soul of tragedy, is a, "whole that that which has a beginning, middle, and end"
(Aristotle, 1451a19). According to Aristotle, "a good poet often stretched out beyond its capabilities,
and is thus obliged to twist the sequence of incident" (Aristotle, 1451b37). With this, he believes
that the reversal is the change in fortune, "described from one state of things within the play to its
opposite, and that too as we say, the

Plot Structure Of A Quest Analysis
The author supported the idea of stories being quests through this sentence. Not only did the author
describe what is needed for a story to be considered a quest, the author also described the
fundamental structure of a plot. The author uses the quest analogy in order to make the reader aware
of how stories have the same basic structure. This being the first chapter reinforces the idea of the
author introducing the structure of a plot. It would only be logical to start a book on how to properly
read and analyze books with the basics. How the author "disguises" the plot structure as a structure
of a quest is helpful because it makes it a much more easy way to connect ideas. While most people
are aware of a plot structure, it would be easier

Flies With Honey Guilty
The "critical function of drama", so Robert Brustein tell us, "is to arouse the remorse of 'guilty
creatures'" (382). In Flies with Honey, the underlining theme is guilt: not only Anna's compunction
over potentially murdering the girl she is in love with, but also her guilt for having these feelings of
love in the first place. This is intended to be portrayed not only through dialogue but having Amy,
the alleged–murder victim, appear as a manifestation of the protagonist's guilt. In order to present
this successfully, I had to understand what it means to write of guilt feelings for the stage and how
such structure can affect characters and their authenticity. I also had to explore how this medium can
be realised in musical theatre.
In very broad terms, there exist two types of plot: one that is driven by action, and one that is driven
by characters (Alderson). Because my stageplay is only fifteen or so pages long and takes place in
one location, it allowed itself to be more character based. However, writing for theatre also brings
the audience into what Martin Meisel calls the "present progressive", which he defines as a state of
time which allows viewers to begin "in the midst of things, responsive to what is happening now,

How To Read Like A Professor Character Analysis
There are several basic plot structures that have been reused throughout literature to create new
stories and ideas, but after all the manipulation and tweaks, the stories still contain the same overall
plot. In this case in How to Read Like a Professor, Mr. Foster starts out his book by introducing one
of the more common story plots, the commencement of a quest. Since writing builds on what has
come before, stories such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Setup in The Crying of Lot 49 have
similar development and organization because they're all quests.
The plot structure of a quest usually consists of five elements with the end result being the
characters discovery of self–knowledge. The basic organization requires a questor that's given

heart of the story is a man caught in the middle of a major conspiracy.
There are themes about destiny, free will, and the universal theme of good versus evil.
While the plot tries to tell a compelling tale with many intriguing ideas, unfortunately, the
combination of the various genres, several plotlines, and the series of events make for a convoluted,

Remember, one clear and consistent goal for the hero to achieve. Streamline the story types and the
subplots. Clarify one goal by the end of act one. Let act two center on the hero trying to achieve that
goal. He should be proactive. As mentioned, if the goal is to find his way out of the game, then show

door etc. Maybe he has to make it to the roof to get out. Maybe there are secret passageways. Create
strong obstacles as he tries to find his way out of the game.
If his goal is to rescue the kids, then stay focused on this, clarify why they were abducted in the first

motivation for the mind control. In act three there should be resolution and character

Amphitryon Dramatic Structure
To understand Dramatic Structure. "The scaffolding on which playwright plots a tale to frame or
shape the action" Mira Fellner, THINK theatre (Boston: Pearson, 2013), 51. While reading a play,
knowledge is applied in a critical perspective. Our mind tries to classify it in a coherent form into
one of the types of dramatic structures that have been studied by us. It should be possible now to
differentiate a climactic structure from a serial, episodic or circular one. Our goal is to clarify the
ideas presented in a play. For this, it is imperative to acknowledge that each play has its own
structure. Using the tools presented to us on "Think theater" we move on now from the theory to the
practice. We will be thoroughly working on the structural analysis of "Amphitryon". A three–act
play, by Moliere. On the very start we meet the main characters, first is "Amphitryon" as the general
of the Thebans. Next, we have "Sosia", Amphitryon's manservant. We also meet "Jupiter" also
known as "Jove", under the guise of "Amphitryon". Finally, there is "Mercury", who is Jupiter's
accomplice in seducing "ALCMENA", Amphitryon's wife. The story begins after Amphitryon has
made his way to the war, a fact on which Jove will take advantage. Then, Mercury proceeds to talk
to the goddess "Night". Mercury says to Night. Page 19 prologue, Mercury to Night. – "That you

Plot Structures In The Wolves By Sarah Delappe
Aristotle wrote the book called Poetics. In this book Aristotle talks about the six elements that make
up a play. They are plot, character, idea, language, music, and spectacle. In any response of a play
one should keep these six elements in mind. The Wolves was written by Sarah DeLappe and is a
dramatic comedy. The first element we should talk about is plot; the plot structure for The Wolves is
a variation. The two plot structures it is similar to the most are climatic and circular. In climatic plot
structure the characteristics are few characters, few locations, late point of attack, and few plots. The
Wolves share the characteristics of few characters, few locations (where they played their games),
and a late point of attack (when number fourteen was killed). Circular plot structure characteristics
are it ends where it began, and the expression of futility and meaninglessness of human effort. The
Wolves also ended where it began (beginning of a soccer game). The actors who portrayed the
characters in this adaptation of The Wolves did an excellent job. They were all how I pictured them
in my head from they acted and how they looked too. Whether it was how number seven acted as a
sarcastic bitch to the captain or when she was portraying her relationship with number fourteen.
Another actress who I really liked in the play was the actress who portrayed number double–zero. I
liked both of these actress because how real and serious they took their roles. For instance, the girl
that played number seven when she was in her shouting match with her best friend number fourteen,
after the weekend they had with the two boys, was spit in the face but kept going anyway. For
double–zero it look like she was actually going to throw up every time she acted like she needed to,
to the point where when she would come back in view she would look even paler than she did
before. The idea behind The Wolves is a portrait of liberty, life, and the pursuit of happiness for nine
girls who just want to play some soccer. We can see this throughout the play whether it's when they
are talking about serious issues like the Khmer Rouge or when they are all just goofing off eating
orange slices. The scene that really shows this idea is

Theme Of Suspense In Hunters In The Snow
Like reality, fiction taps into truths of the self and relationships with others that are often without
recognition, due to refusal of acknowledgment of personal faults. In his story, "Hunters in the
Snow," Tobias Wolff examines the power structure in the relationship of three primary characters
along with the power of their hunting rifles. Through the literary element of potential chance,
suspense is formed, an element of fiction that uses sympathetic characterization in order to create an
aspect of anxiety. He does so with the use of the literary mechanisms such as surprise, mystery,
suspense, and the exploration with every possible type of conflict. As stated in Perrine's Literature
collection, suspense is more important for commercial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The comparison of commercial and literary fiction is endowed here through an alternative plot line
of the friendship. For example, "the man on the seventeenth–story window ledge" in another image,
can be written about for commercial or literary, however, "the literary story would focus less upon
whether the man will jump than on the psychological factors and life experiences that brought him
to the ledge in the first place." The alternative plot structure allows for hints to a secret that Frank
has told Kenny previously and Wolff reveals only as "your jailbait," but later, Frank explains to Tub
while Kenny is hurt and freezing in the car. At the introduction, this is a widely unexpected turn–out,
since this is a literary story, it does not matter whether Kenny arrives at the hospital, for the plot has
concluded with the characterization. The story ends without directions to the hospital while Kenny
freezes to death repeating his mantra that Frank told him to say, "I'm going to the hospital." The
incredible depth of characterization allows the reader to emote on multiple levels for many different
scenarios as Frank pulls into a restaurant to eat and discuss things like trust, guilt, and a personal
clandestine with Tub, all while leaving Kenny in the bed of the truck, breaking all of the virtues they
began with

Sympathy For Peace In The Film Hacksaw Ridge
"The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the
deepest wounds and scars of war."(Douglas MacArthur). Soldiers are the people who are the most
adamant in praying for peace because they are the ones that fight and die. These scenes of death and
bravery and desiring peace are displayed in a film by Mel Gibson titled Hacksaw Ridge. In the film,
Hacksaw Ridge, director Mel Gibson kept some events from The Battle of Okinawa the same but
changed some of the events leading up to the film in order to set the plot and create sympathy for the

Citizen Kane Film Analysis
Citizen Kane is a critically acclaimed movie that most critics rank as one of the best of all times.
The movie has an outstanding narrative structure. The first thing that is easy to identify is that the
difference between story and plot is clear. This movie is not told in chronological order which makes
it easy to identify the clear distinction between story and plot. The lack of chronological order is
first evident in the way the movie starts. It starts with the death of Kane instead of his birth. On the
other hand, some aspects of the movie are told in chronological order such as the investigation into
the meaning of Rosebud. This contrasts Kane's life which is told out of chronological order. The
investigations present the plot of the movie while the life of
Kane presents the story of the movie. This makes the movie great because it creates a unique
combination of plot and story that makes the movie unique and interesting.
Citizen Kane is also narrated through a series of setbacks. These flashbacks include
Thatcher's notebooks, Bernstein, Jeb Leland, Susan Alexander Kane and Raymond. Susan's
interview takes place earlier in the movie but he only gets to hear her story until the end. This
interview takes the form of a flashback. The use of flashbacks enriches the plot of a movie.
However, flashbacks must be prudently used to ensure that they do not end up confusing the viewer
and weakening the plot of the film. Another unique part of the narrative structure is that

Structure Of The Play : For Each Stage Of Plot Development
Structure of the play: For each stage of plot development, provide one example from the play that
illustrates the stage of plot development, identify the Act in which it occurs, and explain how the
example represents the stage of plot development.
Exposition:
The play opens in the cold and dark winter night in Denmark, where several guards are changing on
the battlements of the royal castle of Elsinore. They discuss how two nights in a row, a ghost
resembling the deceased King Hamlet emerges just as the bell strikes the hour of one. A man named
Horatio is informed that the apparition comes at this time and decides to see it for himself and when
they realize that the ghost is real, they decide to inform Hamlet and begin to comprehend that the
siting of King Hamlet's ghost does not mean well for the future of Denmark. This occurs during Act
1 and this example represents the exposition of the drama because the author is provided

Denmark and its future.
Rising Action:
In Act 2, Claudius and Gertrude desire to figure out why Hamlet is mad so they decide to bring
Guildenstern and Rosencrantz, two of Hamlet's schoolmates to spy on him and find out. Claudius
also reveals that he wants to send Hamlet to England because he thinks that Hamlet's madness will

PLOT POINT is an original dramatic, action–thriller. The script is driven by solid themes about

The script features a non–conventional structure in which two main storylines are taking place at

The second plotline is a fictional or fantasy action story that is created by the protagonist's

Analysis Of A Thousand Splendid Suns

  • 1. Analysis Of A Thousand Splendid Suns On the other hand, Khaled Hosseini employs an open plot structure in A Thousand Splendid Suns in order to comment on the effect of assiduity on the possibility of escaping an oppressive environment. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, Hosseini illustrates his narrative through the parallel plotline of his two protagonists–Mariam and Laila–to design an open, chronological plot structure. Through the first sentence of A Thousand Splendid Suns, Hosseini establishes that "Mariam was five years old the first time she heard the word harami" (Hosseini 3). Hosseini's purposeful decision of introducing his main character before all other elements such as the setting and supporting characters illustrates his protagonists' significance in the construction of the plot structure's foundation. In order to establish an open, chronological plot structure, Hosseini constantly reminds the readers of the progression of time through the inclusion of the year and Mariam's age. For instance, in the exposition of chapter five, Hosseini declares, "It was the spring of 1974, the year Mariam turned fifteen" (Hosseini 25). Then in chapter fifteen–the last chapter of the first part– Hosseini once again states, "On April 17, 1978, the year Mariam turned nineteen..." (Hosseini 97). Hosseini purposely includes the date along with Mariam's increasing age throughout the chapters for the readers to become cognizant of the novel's chronological format. In addition to illustrating the progression of time through Mariam, Hosseini also mirrors the same structure for his second protagonist, Laila. In the second part of A Thousand Splendid Suns, Hosseini prefaces the chapter with the header–Kabul, Spring 1987. Immediately below the header, Hosseini begins the chapter by stating, "Nine–year–old Laila rose from bed, as she did most morning, hungry for the sight of her friend Tariq" (Hosseini 107). By introducing Laila through the identical structure utilized when first presenting Mariam, Hosseini provides hints of his wish for readers to juxtapose the two females. Furthermore, by introducing nine–year old Laila twenty–three years after the introduction of five– year old Mariam, Hosseini was able to illustrate Laila's plotline in relation to Mariam's ... • 3. The Role of the Double Plot in King Lear and Hamlet Essay King Lear and Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, are two plays that reveal similar thematic elements, yet possess fundamentally different plot structures. Driven by the suffering and rage of two complementary characters, both plays suggest injustice through 'good', but ultimately flawed characters. This shared overarching theme is, however, conveyed differently within each of the works, as one employs two mainly disparate plot threads, while the other relies more heavily on the interaction between the two central plots. Yet the ultimate purpose of this dualism remains the same within both King Lear and Hamlet, in that Shakespeare's use of the double plot illuminates the tragic elements within both plays, emphasizing core injustices through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This dichotomy between external blames and internal repentance is used by Shakespeare to demonstrate the tragic nature of King Lear from more than one plane, showing how two different personalities respond to two similar fates. In "Hamlet" however, this clear symmetry is replaced with a more muddled intertwinement. Rather than maintaining two relatively separate plot threads in the journeys of Lear and Gloucester, Shakespeare opts to interweave the motivations and fates of Laertes and Hamlet, using their conflict as the central dynamic, while their parallels take a reduced role. In this sense, while King Lear is driven solely by the dualism of the story, Hamlet relies on the clash of the two plots to suggest injustice. This injustice, through conflict, is shown most prominently in Hamlet's and Laertes' duel at the end of the play. Hamlet, describing Laertes as a "a very noble youth." (5.1.231), reveals a respect towards his foe that suggests that it is circumstance, not choice, that forces his hand. Similarly, Laertes' singular goal, "To this point I stand, that both the worlds I give to negligence, let come what comes, only I'll be revenged most thoroughly for my father." (4.5.151–154) shows that his wrath is fueled solely by duty, such that his pursuit of revenge imparts upon him a single–minded myopia that drives him inexorably towards the final conflict. Ironically, upon meeting Claudius after hearing of his father's death, Laertes asks "How came he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Small Deaths The distinction between the plot and story of a film can be difficult to distinguish. These elements both play an important role in communicating the movie maker's ideas to the viewers. However, the key differences between the plot and story of a film revolve around their main functions and based on how they interact with the key components of the narrative. The plot of a film lays out all of the events that take place in the exact order presented and can utilize a variety of developmental elements to move the film from the beginning to the end. The story of a film is the culmination of the plot, along with additional inferred information that was mentioned implicitly or explicitly throughout the film in chronological order which illustrates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The plot is broken up into three different section and shows the protagonist Anna Marie as three different ages. This is a simple example of a temporal plot gap. The plot doesn't provide any information in between the different sections to give any insight on what took place in Anna Marie's life throughout the years that passed. This is an example where the plot gap doesn't get a resolution and the event is completely disregarded. The story can only be created in a viewer has something to base an inference off of in order to fill the plot gap. The exclusion of this information allows the viewer to recognize that the time she aged in between the sections is not relevant to the overall story and shows that there are more important aspects of the film to focus on in order to reveal the whole story. Another instance in this film that illustrates the distinction between plot and story involves the use of parallelism. In the second section of the film there is a scene Anna Marie watches over a cow as it dies. The camera cuts to a close up of the cows eyes tearing up and then to a close up of Anna Marie's eye tearing up. The similarity of the angle at which Anna Marie and the cow were filmed signified that there was something important to be taken away from that scene because it put so much focus on those two subjects. This was not explicitly presented in the plot, but the use of parallelism to focus the viewers' attention to Anna Marie and the cow in that moment was an indicator that the scene was relevant to the ... Susan Glaspell 's Trifles And A Jury Of Her Peers Although "A Jury of Her Peers" and "Trifles" are similar in plot, Mustazza's article, "Generic Translation and Thematic Shift in Susan Glaspell's 'Trifles' and 'A Jury of Her Peers'" highlights the differences and similarities between the two. Mustazza's article may help aid readers to understand the differences between Glaspell's two works and provide understanding as to why Glaspell may have changed the genre and form of the plot. "Trifles" is a dramatic play whereas "A Jury of Her Peers" is prose fiction. While some differences may be seen on the surface, other differences will need to be inspected closely. Mustazza's article may help one to understand Glaspell's works by providing analysis and additional perspectives on both "A Jury of her Peers" and "Trifles". The most obvious difference between Glaspell's two works is the title. The play is entitled "Trifles" whereas the prose version is called "A Jury of Her Peers". Mustazza's article provides background knowledge and a reason why Glaspell may have changed and retitled the prose version. • 9. Literary Analysis Of 'Rome Fever, And Edith Wharton'sRoman... Roman Fever: W, A New Leaf: L Critical literary analysis can be used in many ways: simply to understand a story's purpose, the story's characters, and many other aspects to understand a story fully. Critical literary analysis can also be used to try to determine an opinion between two books and their value as a story. In the case between "Roman Fever" written by Edith Wharton and F. Scott Fitzgerald's "A New Leaf", "Roman Fever" is the superior story between the two. After in depth analysis of both stories, "Roman Fever" deserves the higher ranking simply because of its literary elements. "Roman Fever" written by Edith Wharton has a more complex plot structure than "A New Leaf". The plot structure in a "Roman Fever" is more complex because it is not simply chronological. The story does use a chronological structure to describe how long the two characters have been sitting together, and to further the story, but there are mentions of the past that divert from the chronological order. These glimpses into the past from the characters, Alida Slade and Grace Ansley, add artistic unity to the story, meaning that these flashbacks cannot be removed, otherwise the story would not be comprehendible. The purpose of "Roman Fever" is not the plot but the characters and their relationship, and the change and develop of Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansley. This alone rank "Roman Fever" above "A New Leaf" because "A New Leaf" relies heavily on chronological plot structure and the plot to truly drive the story. The plot also ties in heavily the stereotype of the pattern of three's. Julia rejects both Dick and Phil twice before accepting them both on the third time. Many of the analysis questions for "A New Leaf" focus on the plot rather than anything else, including two about Phil and Dick and plot, "4. What causes Julia to reject Dick, twice? What in his behavior causes her rejections, and what in her character causes them? 5. What is the function of Phil Hoffman in the plot? Why does Julia reject him, and why does she finally marry him?" The characters of "Roman Fever" are dynamic in a literary way and are the main focus of the story. If the relationship between the two characters, and the characters themselves, were not made ... • 15. Structure And Form In Sophocles Antigone "Tragedy , then is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude; in language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play; in the form of action, not of narrative; through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation of these emotions" (Aristotle VI). When one reads a tragedy, a series of emotions are conducted throughout ones' body and those emotions are the connection between literature and art. If one were to look at a group of seemingly meaningless words manifested on a piece of paper it would give the thought of confusion, but when the words are naturally streamed together the sense of unity embraces a beautiful arrangement of parts. The necessity of structure and form in literature and art are necessary for the success of the work. A piece of fabric will never become a beautiful dress without the outline therefore, the structure and form give the literature and art a place to grow and flourish. The needed structure and form allows the focal point of the piece to be listened to. In Antigone, Sophocles exercises "the soul of a tragedy"(Aristotle IV), plot, by seductively piecing events in an appealing way, chronologically. The chronologic ability in poetry is essential, however when a plot becomes episodic, "acts succeed one another without probable or necessary sequence" (Aristotle IX) it grows foreseeable. • 17. Plot Of The Novel ' The Hunger Games ' The plot is a very important part of a story. If there was not a plot structure; it would be a very boring story. That is if they could even make a story at all. Every story has to have some kind of plot. A short story might be able to have a simple plot, but a movie or novel would have to have one, or who would pay for the movie or book. Even though, there has to be some kind of plot; that might not be the main purpose of the book. The important part, that draws people in could also be the characters. The girl that is reading The Hunger Games, might not be reading it because she wants to what happens next. It could be that she loves Katniss Everdeen, and wants to keep reading about her. Of course there has to be a plot or there would be no reason to keep reading; it just might not be the main focus. The storyline of the reading material is called a plot. The plot has a structure containing exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and the resolution. Exposition is the introduction of the story. In the short story, "A Family Supper" the exposition is when he is talking about the poisonous fish, Fugu, and how his mother had died from eating it. During this time, it also talks about the conflict between him and his parents. This is how readers know that while him and his dad are talking that there is tension there. The conflict keeps the reader in suspense, wondering why he went to America, until they read where his sister, later, asks about a girl ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The roman comedy we watched was "The Braggart Soldier" by Plautus. The sitcom I chose for my comedy assignment is Modern Family. The sitcom is based on 3 families that interact with one another in comedic ways. The plot of the roman comedy, "The Braggart Soldier," starts with the prologue during which all the characters are introduced and two describe how they became slaves of Pyrgopolyneices and the basic ideas of the plan to trick him into letting them leave with Pluesicles and go to Athens. Then, all the characters except Palestrio leave the set. Next, the plan starts with a soldier, Pyrgopolyneices, entering the stage and he boasts about the battles he won. Palestrio agrees with Pyrgopolyneices and then lies to him about the woman in the house next door and about how she loves Pyrgopolyneices. • 21. Factors On The Effect Of Elevation Effects On Plant Growth Elevations Effects on Plant Growth James Walters, 8/25/2017, Biology 132–01, Alan Liang & Jillian Beard Introduction Plants rely on the environment in which they live to grow, and different environmental conditions provide a wide array of different foliage. Many studies have concluded that altitude effects the heights of a variety of different species (1). In a study comparing beech tree growth, factors such as light and nutrient availability were shown to increase as tree height increased. Along with these findings, it was found that growth rate declined as altitude increased (2). Another study observing elevations effect on Malosma Laurinais showed that increased altitudes were correlated with stronger and healthier leaves for the plants (3). Plants primarily rely on water, and sunlight to grow, but other factors play a role in development as well. Elevation can have a drastic impact on the speciation and growth of different plant species for many reasons. Surface level determines soil moisture content, wind speed, and the amount of sunlight that a plot of vegetation will receive. Common knowledge of how plants grow, suggest that the high soil moisture content at low elevations will increase plant height due to the excess of resources being provided. Plants in the campus lodge area in Brocton, NY have a vast variety of different growing conditions and climates. We decided to examine if different soil elevations had an impact on the growth of plants in this area. Foliage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For the majority of the readers that can understand this situation, endings are rarely happy and are usually sad, depressing, or just lackluster. Margaret Atwood and her short story Happy Endings point out the truth of stories and show an effective way to write a story at the same time. With the use of imagery, symbolism, and wordplay, Atwood changes the meaning and feeling of her story. When James and Mary get together "Everything 's becomes very underwater" (Atwood 19). The feeling of being drifted around and going with the flow brings life to the story. Much like the relationship that Mary and James have together, they just hold their breath and hope for the best as the tides bring conflict and excitement into their lives. On the other hand, John who has a stimulating and challenging life, and committed to his wife Madge, felt uncontrollable jealousy and killed not only Mary and James, But also himself. The Reader can gather from the way that Atwood wrote this story, that Mary just wanted to be a free spirit, and John was tired of his mundane life but to scared to change anything. The plot and style of her stories with the combination imagery makes the reader feel attached to the characters and grabs your attention. • 25. Literary Reflection Intent and purpose of this class The intent of this class is to give the student a well–rounded overview of the basic parts of a short story or novel. These include plot, character, point of view, strong openings to a story, dialogue and writing enhancement. It is intended to help writers. It is not intended to be a literary criticism class. I will also provide a brief overview of genre, marketability and marketing promotion. I will review work for content and structure. I will not "copyedit" the student's work. My focus will not be on grammar or sentence structure. I will give homework assignments and it is helpful to finish the assignments. But we may move onto the next assignment if you haven't completed in the assignment within a few days. Lesson one: The Plot in the Story Introduction Good stories have a beginning, middle and end. But editors look for the plot arc, or some variation of it. If you are an established, well–recognized author you might tweak The arc model, but the rest of us must slug through it. And for good reason. The arc will pull your reader through the story. It is the reason why your reader will turn the pages until the very end. It also helps the writer focus their story line, cut out the parts that are slowing it down, and highlight the parts that help move the story. Trust me, in the end The arc will be your friend. If all of this comes as a surprise to you then you have been reading wonderful books or watching wonderful movies/TV shows ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The plot of the story develops around Gittes job as a private investigator, and Gittes researches the background information of the water system for Los Angeles. Through Gittes investigation, the sudden death of Mr. Mulwray becomes the main plot line of the story. Ms. Mulwray, the wife hires Jake Gittes to investigate her husband for infidelity, but through his inspecting, he starts to uncover the truths within the Los Angeles water system. The characters of the film have a strange connection with each other, which makes the story rich in depth. This is powerful for the viewer because the potential of the plot can be expanded with extraordinary plot twists and character development. Personally, I thought the Roman Polanski constructed a phenomenal movie, because of the drama aspect. The conflict was clear thirty minutes into the film, and the direction of the film perfectly kept the audience glued to the plot of the movie. Chinatown provides effective elements of drama through intensive detail, and a strong plot; which makes the movie highly entertaining. Rules of the Game are an important concept to creating a drama, and I enjoyed many of the subtle details of Chinatown. Polanski directs the film with a noir setting to make his audience carefully indulge in every aspect of the film. • 29. Narrative Progression In Margaret Atwood's 'Happy Endings' "Happy Endings" is a short story written by Margaret Atwood. The story is different than what readers may be used to because it doesn't follow a traditional plot line. Instead, Margaret's story follows an experimental "narrative progression". This type of story progression is a way that an author can manipulate, contort, or obscure the "5 Stages of Plot" structure (Hillard, "Point of View in Fiction"). In this essay, I will explore how experimental "narrative progression" is used in "Happy Endings", how it works in the story, how it relates to the story, and my opinion on experimental "narrative progression" in Margaret Atwood's "Happy Endings". How is experimental "narrative progression" used in "Happy Endings"? This type of story progression is used in this story because the story as a whole doesn't go in order of a traditional plot line. The first story (the original story) serves as the ending for each of the other versions that Margaret provides for the reader. Each of the new versions follow the same characters as in the original story, but they lead different lives. For example, in the original story the two characters fall in love with each other but in the next version of that story the man doesn't love the woman even though she still loves the man. Also, "Happy Endings" uses experimental "narrative progression" because there are several beginnings and middles based on the story as a whole. However, there is only one ending which is the original story. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Plot Structures In A Sound Of Thunder By Aldous Hudbury "Then the hero defeated the evil doer and saved the princess, winning her love with his heroism!" Cliches like this are what society is starting to grow bored with. Many stories go with the same classic image of the portrayals of typical character roles. Plot structures are becoming more and more transparent with no real substance to the character's development or anything substantial to the plot. However, some novelists are starting to branch off from that stereotypical structure into something that differentiates themselves. Ray Bradbury, known as one the best, if not the best, science fiction writers of our time wrote one particular short story, "A Sound of Thunder." This piece is about a common science fiction topic, time travel. However, instead of glorifying the wonders of time travel and the possibilities of what could be considered an idealistic dream machine, Bradbury shows the consequences of dabbling with space and time. Exploring themes of death, fear, and drastic change, Bradbury was no longer part of the cliche bubble of science fiction. Another piece that greatly differentiated itself from other works of similar topics was Aldous Huxley's piece Brave New World. This piece is satire of the societal problems of the time it was written, during the Great Depression. The piece's "protagonist" was by no means, the typical knight in shining armor. He had in depth character development that led to corruption instead of salvation contrary to the common day portrayal of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Home To Harlem Analysis In his analysis of Claude McKay's Home to Harlem, Shane Vogel refers to the text as a piece of literature which is "invested in 'affective mimesis.'" Essentially, the text is interested in the reproduction of feelings and senses. The success of the text is based on the audience's ability to feel what McKay wants them to feel. Of course, this method has its limits. How will a non–black audience capable of absorbing the material presented exactly as McKay means for it to be interpreted? The answer to that question, of course, is that this text was not produced for consumption by white audiences. This has been established by McKay's response to W.E.B. Du Bois's criticisms of Home to Harlem, where it is staunchly established that McKay's portrayal of African–American individuals is for African–Americans themselves–the text portrays a series of experiences which can only be understood by an in–group, and that is that. Thus, McKay's "affective mimesis," or the "elliptical sensorium of pleasure" he produces, aims not to depict Harlem as a spectacle, but as a place in which his audience already knows and already exists in. Ultimately, the story of Home to Harlem exemplifies a never–ending series of knowing and unknowing one's surroundings and one's home. This is reinforced by the novel's looping plot structure. McKay's formulation of the text does not give us an interpretation of diaspora, then–it aims to reproduce the feeling of diaspora in our hearts. First, let us consider how the structure of the novel's plot reinforces the dual complexity of identity and remembrance. Home to Harlem is a text defined by its astounding structural redundancy. Regardless of one's place in the novel, it can be assumed that similar events are going to unfold–there will be a mention of clubs or alcohol, dancing will be involved, and Jake will surely sigh about how he has lost his "sweet brown." In instances where Jake and his companions aren't in Harlem, Jake laments for a return to what he considers home. Thus, aside from certain moments, such as when Jake finally finds Felice, the formulaic structure of Home to Harlem seems doomed to repeat itself for eternity. It is during this aforementioned reunion when the audience begins to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Eventually, this leads to Jake talking to a group of people. It's not the best structure to use. As the story progresses, the structure jumps back and forth from being a drama to being a thriller. When it focuses on Jake's life as a child on the farm, his relationship with his family, the death of his father, his friendship with Chase, the pressure of hitting hard, questioning the equipment, Jake and Chase's relationship arc, and Jake and Chase mentoring others about the safety of football it's considered a drama. When it's about Henry taking pictures of Jake and blackmailing him, and abducting his family it's a thriller. However, this story as structured isn't fully developed. First, the years span too long for a thriller. A thriller has to have more urgency and should be in one timeline. It's unclear how the pictures of Chase with another woman are relevant to the plot. Consider cutting. The subplot about Jake doing drugs isn't fully developed. Either expand this in a thriller or cut it. Thus, they can successfully use the same plot structure to portray two divergent effects of losing one's innocence in a traumatic event. The plot structure of the novels also reinforces the idea of innocence. The plot structure for The Kite Runner is chronological, but the plot structure for The God of Small Things is circular. In his novel, The Kite Runner, Hosseini begins to dive into the distinction by beginning the novel with introducing the main character, Amir, and his friend Hassan. The God of Small Things is out of sequence because the novel is jumbled. However, in his novel The Kite Runner Khaled Hosseini portrays Amir as unable to save Hassan from the rape that takes place, and instead shows Amir protecting Sohrab, Hassan's son, who was also raped by the same person. CONCLUSION: In both novels, Arundhati Roy and Khaled Hosseini took careful consideration when conveying their message to readers. They both utilize similar story plots, plot structure, and symbols that represent similar meanings. As an author, Khaled Hosseini clearly describes Amir's journey and his reactions to specific events throughout the novel, crafting his responses in clever ways. Arundhati Roy also employs the same technique in her novel, choosing to use a similar plot structure, but having the characters react differently to the scenarios they face. • 45. Aristotle Soul Of Tragedy Analysis For Aristotle, the unity of temporality guarantees the unity of the plot's action. The dramatic action, being the mimesis of representation, demands a certain magnitude to expand the temporality of the plot, "a length which allows of the hero passing by a series of probable of necessary stages from bad fortune to good, or from good to bad, may suffice as a limit for magnitude of a story" (Aristotle, 1450b45) Aristotle uses the subject of the Odyssey as an example of a tragic plot which encompasses the coherent totality of unity of time and unity of action, "Homer, in writing an Odyssey, he did not make the poem cover all that ever befell his hero–it befell him" (Aristotle, 1451a25). Plot is the soul of tragedy that forms meaning necessary to make sense of human action for the spectacle (L3, Aristotle–Tragedy). Thus, the spectator is able to reason and make probable through the mimesis of action contain in the plots soul of tragedy. Reversal, recognition, and suffering are elements that encompass the soul of tragedy– the plot. The dramatic plot, the soul of tragedy, is a, "whole that that which has a beginning, middle, and end" (Aristotle, 1451a19). • 52. Flies With Honey Guilty The "critical function of drama", so Robert Brustein tell us, "is to arouse the remorse of 'guilty creatures'" (382). In Flies with Honey, the underlining theme is guilt: not only Anna's compunction over potentially murdering the girl she is in love with, but also her guilt for having these feelings of love in the first place. This is intended to be portrayed not only through dialogue but having Amy, the alleged–murder victim, appear as a manifestation of the protagonist's guilt. In order to present this successfully, I had to understand what it means to write of guilt feelings for the stage and how such structure can affect characters and their authenticity. I also had to explore how this medium can be realised in musical theatre. In very broad terms, there exist two types of plot: one that is driven by action, and one that is driven by characters (Alderson). Because my stageplay is only fifteen or so pages long and takes place in one location, it allowed itself to be more character based. However, writing for theatre also brings the audience into what Martin Meisel calls the "present progressive", which he defines as a state of time which allows viewers to begin "in the midst of things, responsive to what is happening now, with questions [...] [about] how are [they] going to get from here to there" ... At the heart of the story is a man caught in the middle of a major conspiracy. There are themes about destiny, free will, and the universal theme of good versus evil. While the plot tries to tell a compelling tale with many intriguing ideas, unfortunately, the combination of the various genres, several plotlines, and the series of events make for a convoluted, and often, challenging plotline to follow. Essentially, the story tries to tell too many storylines, including a supernatural Biblical war, a sci–fi tale about mind control and brainwashing, then a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are a few minor typos. Overall, a strong start, but as the story progresses, the story becomes less articulate. The script is set up to be a possible franchise, but the script needs to be clearer and restructured first. Remember, one clear and consistent goal for the hero to achieve. Streamline the story types and the subplots. Clarify one goal by the end of act one. Let act two center on the hero trying to achieve that goal. He should be proactive. As mentioned, if the goal is to find his way out of the game, then show this. Show the decisions he has to make to find his way out – which level of the building, which door etc. Maybe he has to make it to the roof to get out. Maybe there are secret passageways. Create strong obstacles as he tries to find his way out of the game. If his goal is to rescue the kids, then stay focused on this, clarify why they were abducted in the first place. If the story is about mind control and he has to stop Flannery, make sure there's a good reason or motivation for the mind control. In act three there should be resolution and character ... • 61. Amphitryon Dramatic Structure To understand Dramatic Structure. "The scaffolding on which playwright plots a tale to frame or shape the action" Mira Fellner, THINK theatre (Boston: Pearson, 2013), 51. While reading a play, knowledge is applied in a critical perspective. Our mind tries to classify it in a coherent form into one of the types of dramatic structures that have been studied by us. It should be possible now to differentiate a climactic structure from a serial, episodic or circular one. Our goal is to clarify the ideas presented in a play. For this, it is imperative to acknowledge that each play has its own structure. Using the tools presented to us on "Think theater" we move on now from the theory to the practice. We will be thoroughly working on the structural analysis of "Amphitryon". A three–act play, by Moliere. On the very start we meet the main characters, first is "Amphitryon" as the general of the Thebans. Next, we have "Sosia", Amphitryon's manservant. We also meet "Jupiter" also known as "Jove", under the guise of "Amphitryon". Finally, there is "Mercury", who is Jupiter's accomplice in seducing "ALCMENA", Amphitryon's wife. The story begins after Amphitryon has made his way to the war, a fact on which Jove will take advantage. Then, Mercury proceeds to talk to the goddess "Night". Mercury says to Night. • 63. Plot Structures In The Wolves By Sarah Delappe Aristotle wrote the book called Poetics. In this book Aristotle talks about the six elements that make up a play. They are plot, character, idea, language, music, and spectacle. In any response of a play one should keep these six elements in mind. The Wolves was written by Sarah DeLappe and is a dramatic comedy. The first element we should talk about is plot; the plot structure for The Wolves is a variation. The two plot structures it is similar to the most are climatic and circular. In climatic plot structure the characteristics are few characters, few locations, late point of attack, and few plots. The Wolves share the characteristics of few characters, few locations (where they played their games), and a late point of attack (when number fourteen was killed). Circular plot structure characteristics are it ends where it began, and the expression of futility and meaninglessness of human effort. The Wolves also ended where it began (beginning of a soccer game). The actors who portrayed the characters in this adaptation of The Wolves did an excellent job. They were all how I pictured them in my head from they acted and how they looked too. Whether it was how number seven acted as a sarcastic bitch to the captain or when she was portraying her relationship with number fourteen. Another actress who I really liked in the play was the actress who portrayed number double–zero. I liked both of these actress because how real and serious they took their roles. For instance, the girl that played number seven when she was in her shouting match with her best friend number fourteen, after the weekend they had with the two boys, was spit in the face but kept going anyway. For double–zero it look like she was actually going to throw up every time she acted like she needed to, to the point where when she would come back in view she would look even paler than she did before. The idea behind The Wolves is a portrait of liberty, life, and the pursuit of happiness for nine girls who just want to play some soccer. We can see this throughout the play whether it's when they are talking about serious issues like the Khmer Rouge or when they are all just goofing off eating orange slices. The scene that really shows this idea is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Theme Of Suspense In Hunters In The Snow Like reality, fiction taps into truths of the self and relationships with others that are often without recognition, due to refusal of acknowledgment of personal faults. In his story, "Hunters in the Snow," Tobias Wolff examines the power structure in the relationship of three primary characters along with the power of their hunting rifles. Through the literary element of potential chance, suspense is formed, an element of fiction that uses sympathetic characterization in order to create an aspect of anxiety. He does so with the use of the literary mechanisms such as surprise, mystery, suspense, and the exploration with every possible type of conflict. As stated in Perrine's Literature collection, suspense is more important for commercial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The comparison of commercial and literary fiction is endowed here through an alternative plot line of the friendship. For example, "the man on the seventeenth–story window ledge" in another image, can be written about for commercial or literary, however, "the literary story would focus less upon whether the man will jump than on the psychological factors and life experiences that brought him to the ledge in the first place." The alternative plot structure allows for hints to a secret that Frank has told Kenny previously and Wolff reveals only as "your jailbait," but later, Frank explains to Tub while Kenny is hurt and freezing in the car. At the introduction, this is a widely unexpected turn–out, since this is a literary story, it does not matter whether Kenny arrives at the hospital, for the plot has concluded with the characterization. The story ends without directions to the hospital while Kenny freezes to death repeating his mantra that Frank told him to say, "I'm going to the hospital." The incredible depth of characterization allows the reader to emote on multiple levels for many different scenarios as Frank pulls into a restaurant to eat and discuss things like trust, guilt, and a personal clandestine with Tub, all while leaving Kenny in the bed of the truck, breaking all of the virtues they began with ... The author's main concern in this chapter is to guide the reader toward a good understanding of how Hebrew narrative "works," so that we may read our bibles with more knowledge and with a greater appreciation for God's story. This chapter is all about narratives, a narrative is a story retelling the historical events of the past that are intended to give meaning and direction for a given people in the present. All narratives have three basic parts; characters, plot, and plot resolution. In the bible, God is protagonist, Satan is the antagonist, and God's people are the agonists. (agnostic?) • 73. Sympathy For Peace In The Film Hacksaw Ridge "The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war."(Douglas MacArthur). Soldiers are the people who are the most adamant in praying for peace because they are the ones that fight and die. These scenes of death and bravery and desiring peace are displayed in a film by Mel Gibson titled Hacksaw Ridge. In the film, Hacksaw Ridge, director Mel Gibson kept some events from The Battle of Okinawa the same but changed some of the events leading up to the film in order to set the plot and create sympathy for the characters The movie, Hacksaw Ridge, depicted true events from The Battle of Okinawa, that portray the real life events accurately. For instance, after the soldiers withdrew from the ridge and Doss stayed and "He personally saved seventy–five lives by pulling soldiers from the ridge and lowering them down to safety..."(Flux). Additionally, he displayed the conflict that occurred between Doss and his commanding officers because "...his officers grew less tolerant of his refusal to bear arms or work on Saturdays... a meeting to discharge... for mental instability."("Hacksaw Ridge"). • 75. Citizen Kane Film Analysis Citizen Kane is a critically acclaimed movie that most critics rank as one of the best of all times. The movie has an outstanding narrative structure. The first thing that is easy to identify is that the difference between story and plot is clear. This movie is not told in chronological order which makes it easy to identify the clear distinction between story and plot. The lack of chronological order is first evident in the way the movie starts. It starts with the death of Kane instead of his birth. On the other hand, some aspects of the movie are told in chronological order such as the investigation into the meaning of Rosebud. This contrasts Kane's life which is told out of chronological order. The investigations present the plot of the movie while the life of Kane presents the story of the movie. This makes the movie great because it creates a unique combination of plot and story that makes the movie unique and interesting. Citizen Kane is also narrated through a series of setbacks. These flashbacks include Thatcher's notebooks, Bernstein, Jeb Leland, Susan Alexander Kane and Raymond. Susan's interview takes place earlier in the movie but he only gets to hear her story until the end. This interview takes the form of a flashback. The use of flashbacks enriches the plot of a movie. However, flashbacks must be prudently used to ensure that they do not end up confusing the viewer and weakening the plot of the film. Another unique part of the narrative structure is that the ... Structure Of The Play : For Each Stage Of Plot Development Structure of the play: For each stage of plot development, provide one example from the play that illustrates the stage of plot development, identify the Act in which it occurs, and explain how the example represents the stage of plot development. Exposition: The play opens in the cold and dark winter night in Denmark, where several guards are changing on the battlements of the royal castle of Elsinore. They discuss how two nights in a row, a ghost resembling the deceased King Hamlet emerges just as the bell strikes the hour of one. A man named Horatio is informed that the apparition comes at this time and decides to see it for himself and when they realize that the ghost is real, they decide to inform Hamlet and begin to comprehend that the siting of King Hamlet's ghost does not mean well for the future of Denmark. This occurs during Act 1 and this example represents the exposition of the drama because the author is provided information about the setting of the play, several characters, and several concepts that coincide with Denmark and its future. Rising Action: In Act 2, Claudius and Gertrude desire to figure out why Hamlet is mad so they decide to bring Guildenstern and Rosencrantz, two of Hamlet's schoolmates to spy on him and find out. Claudius also reveals that he wants to send Hamlet to England because he thinks that Hamlet's madness will cause conflicts in Denmark. The tone is consistently dramatic. The script features a non–conventional structure in which two main storylines are taking place at one time. One plot is based on the life of the central protagonist and his real life dilemma. This storyline combines drama with a crime thriller.
