Use of Facilities by Religious Groups
Week 1 Case Studies
David Fernandez
School Law
Use of Facilities by Religious Groups 1. Yes, I believe the Bible club has legitimate grounds to file
suit for use of school facilities. Principal Gayle Dixon's decision to deny the club use is based on her
interpretation of the club's charter to be discriminatory and not necessarily the law's or districts. 2.
No, I would say principal Dixon is not justified to deny use of school facilities because she is
making the judgment based her beliefs and not the eye of the law's. 3. Yes, the Bible club has the
right to specify that only Christians may be club officers based on the fact that the Bible club
members all agree or vote for the standards of the charter for the club. ... Show more content on

Any exit where students leave the building or congregate before or after school should be supervised
by a school official. 2. The school should be held liable for Holbrook injury of there was no school
supervision provided in the area Holbrook and other students were gathering. 3. Some facts that
must be know would include: a. Was the exit used and appropriate exit from the school? b. Was
there any supervision provided at this exit? c. Did school officials know students congregated there?
d. Did any school official know of a threat to anyone in the school? e. Had any school official seen
any signs of a threatening act about to happen? 4. If school officials knew a violent act was
threatened to occur or if there should have been a school official on duty where the students were
and was not, the school could be held liable for the injury. 5. If students were in an unauthorized
area of school grounds the school may not be held liable or if school officials had exercised all
viable options in dealing with a threatening situation. 6. As an administrator, building supervision
and student/staff safety has to always be at the forefront in planning for the school day. Not doing
so, can lead to the unthinkable like this situation, a school

A Report Card For Yankton School District
For the first project requirements, I collected data for the Yankton School District and the Mitchell
School District from the South Dakota Department of Education's website. I specifically looked at
each district's report card that included performance indicators, school performance index, staffing
and student population statistics, attendance numbers and high school completion and college and
career readiness statistics. Each school district's report card contained further detailed information
and percentages regarding test scores in math, ELA, and science.
After collecting and organizing the data from the district report card for Yankton School District,
one of the most interesting trends I found was the difference in scores between 2013 and 2014. For
the years 2012 and 2013, scores were reported on four levels: Below Basic, Basic, Proficient, and
Advanced. Then in 2014, the scores were reported on a new leveling system including the four
levels: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4. When reviewing the different levels, I compared
Level 1 to Below Basic. In 2013 for the 6th–grade class, out of 190 students, 0.53% of those
students scored at the Below Basic level in math. However, in 2014 for the 6th–grade class, out of
166 students, 32.32% of those students scored at Level 1. Even when evaluating the same group of
students, the 7th grade class for 2014, I noticed a rather large increase as well, with 23.30% of 209
students scoring at the Level 1.
I found a similar

Texas Constitution: The Texas State Board Of Education
Article 7 ,Section 8 of the Texas Constitution states "STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION. The
Legislature shall provide by law for a State Board of Education, whose members shall be appointed
or elected in such manner and by such authority and shall serve for such terms as the Legislature
shall prescribe not to exceed six years. The said board shall perform such duties as may be
prescribed by law."(Texas Constitution,1928). I personally think that the school board of Texas is
corrupt. The duties that are prescribed to them are a "set up " to students. The Texas State Board of
Education is an injustice to adolescent growth, and they provide several hindrances to the youth in
Texas. These impediments revolve around school funding, lack of supplies, ... Show more content

"Most teachers can tell you that they spend a good amount of money every year on supplies.
Sometimes it is for individual students, sometimes for class use. I am not talking about iPod's and
such, I am talking about paper, staplers, glue and tape. I have already spent over $200." (S.
Mattiza,2006) Due to me being a high school student, I have to totally agree with the previous
statement that was made. I have been in Desoto Independent School District since I was in the sixth
grade. At one point of time, the school was not providing my teachers with copy paper so, we as
students had to bring in copy paper for extra credit. Things like this do not just happen in Desoto
Independent School District, I also attended a couple of schools in Dallas ISD. I remember us not
being able to take home books for extra study time because the State Board of Education only
provided a class set of books for each class. Sometimes we even had to share books because the
older the books got ,the worse the condition of the books were. Also, some classes that required
books did not have them because they were not provided for students. This is when I started to
realize how corrupt the Texas State Board of Education actually was ,because they are responsible
for the overseeing of the permanent school fund. "The Texas Permanent School Fund (PSF) was

Technology As A Tool For Teaching Students
As times change, so does usage of technology. More and more schools across the world are using
technology as a tool in teaching their students. While there are several districts that teach in the
"traditional" sense, there has been a steady incline as to the amount of school districts across the
world that are switching to iPads and other electronic devices to aide in the pupil's education.
Depending on the administrators, students are allowed to bring their devices to the classroom
(BYOD, Bring Your Own Device), while other districts receive grants and other types of funding to
purchase a technology device for each student.
The primary concern to many districts is the cost factor. First and foremost, the school district has to
purchase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main question posed with these technological advances in education is, is it really benefiting the
children enough to budget that much money to purchase all of these electronic devices? According
to a study done in Scotland, by using the traditional "holistic" way of teaching, there is a gap in
gender according to Department for Education and Skills, there has been a steady 10% difference in
male and females. Instead of both sexes being equal, males have had the shorter end of the stick.
(Department for Education and Skills, 2003)
When the schools were able to integrate the Apple iPads, researchers and observers noticed that the
male's scores were able to increase to the average girl's score. A huge concern was the fact that
male's were slowly but surely falling behind in their academics. Although this does not prove that
the money spent on this expedition has been worth their while, it does improve many student's
participation and interest in the academic department. (McPhee & Marks, 2013)
One crucial and possible setback, if not closely monitored and taken into consideration is the fact
that some teachers do not want the Apple iPads integrated into their teaching techniques. A good
portion of teachers are from the "traditional" type of teaching and ready to retire after so many years
of using the same routine. They might ask, "I'm about to leave so why should I even bother learning
something this new and

The Arts Have Been Long-Recognized As A Vital Component
The arts have been long–recognized as a vital component of the well–rounded student, but for the
past several decades, the importance of arts programs in many U.S. schools has been steadily
compromised (Rabkin & Redmond, 2006). Pressure to compete internationally has influenced
educational institutions to believe that an almost exclusive focus on academic fundamentals is the
sole way to raise standards and close the achievement gap (Sholl & Sweetland, 2016). Katz–
Buonincontro, Phillips, and Witherspoon (2015) expound on the predicament of today's schools:
expected to promote twenty–first century skills, including creativity, critical thinking,
communication, and collaboration, leaders are simultaneously pushed to uphold standards–based ...

Add the lack of esteem for the arts to the aforementioned budget and standardized testing issues, and
very little room is left for the arts, a subject that often loses in the battle for precious time and
resources. Appel (2006) evokes the spirit of the arts through Leonardo da Vinci, the "original"
Renaissance man – artist, mathematician, inventor, astronomer, and leader – who drew inspiration
from everything around him, including the arts. During his time, the arts were a required part of any
educational curriculum, whether formal or informal. A means to reflect on the human condition, the
arts were "considered inseparable from the sciences and other academic disciplines" and a vital part
of community life (Appel, 2006, p. 14). Goodman (2015) furthers this notion by explaining that
people – both yesterday and today – embrace the arts to gain understanding and perspective into the
more immaterial questions of life. Da Vinci's brilliance came from the world around him, a world
that cared deeply about intellectual curiosity and inspired creativity. The modern arguments
surrounding the arts do not deny their value, yet they get lost when faced with demands about
budget, their direct impact on test scores, and where exactly they fit in a given curriculum. Many
public schools have seen their arts programs disappearing, despite the numerous studies publicizing
the benefits, including increased academic achievement, creativity, confidence, and

The Superintendents Of Schools Are The Top Executives In
The superintendents of schools are the top executives in a school district. This position is one of the
most prominent positions in an educational community. Because of this, school superintendents
must be an outstanding citizen and a person of excellent character. Moreover, they must be able to
communicate effectively with parents, community, and all stakeholders. Superintendents are
responsible for leading every function for a school. With this title comes great responsibility.
Superintendents have an array of duties and responsibilities in their schools. They are solely

And so, the aim of accountability systems is to provide incentives to encourage student to achieve at
high levels and set clear goals for student performance.
Every Student Succeeds Act, was signed into law in 2015 and is replacing the No Child Left Behind
Act. ESSA is a system that gives states more flexibility as it relates to funding, assessment and
accountability. Moreover, there are many positive components to ESSA that will help a
superintendent be effective in their position. One positive concept of the ESSA accountability
system is that it will utilize the federal and state standards by merging them into one while the
efficiency is analyzed. In addition to this, ESSA ended the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
requirement that was designed Under the No Child Left Behind Law while allowing states to
eliminate unnecessary assessments. According to (Feagan, 2009), AYP was defined during this time
as a stronger accountability measure. It was the only accountability system used to determine if
schools were successful. This law made it difficult for superintendents to effectively move schools
because AYP looked at individual subgroups in addition to individual groups. And so, if a
superintendent was the leader of a district that had a high poverty rate, the test results in many cases
were lower (2009.) Thus, making it

My Government Professor At South Texas College
My government professor at South Texas College gave the class a very rigorous assignment that
required a more participation than usual. We were told to go to a regular government meeting, for
instance, a city council meeting or a school board meeting, and observe the proceedings and then
write about what took place at the meeting. These government meetings are usually held at the
town's city halls or if it were a school board meeting then they would take place at the school's
central office. Usually these meeting are held the first Tuesdays of every month. I chose to go to a
meeting at Mercedes Central Office for a regular school board meeting. It took place at Monday,
March 7, 2016 5:45 PM, and it was located at 206 West Sixth Street, Mercedes, Texas. The drive
from my house to the Administration Office took a whole four minutes since I live nearby. Despite
living nearby I drove in my blue 2005 Chevy Trailblazer to get to my destination. Once I arrived, I
saw a midsized deep tiger orange building that had a mural of a tiger in between long grass and
another mural of a white tiger majestically laying down. It was a beautiful sight to see. Where the
sidewalk meets up in the front of the building is where there is a design made with rocks. In the
design the white rocks were put in place to form the shape of the letter M, which stands for
Mercedes and all around the M are orange rocks and a many different colored flowers to
compliment the design. To get inside the

Personal Narrative: Joining The Cupertino Middle School
In the world today, people have created different hobbies for themselves. Many people like to read
different books from different genres. Some like to do life changing experiments for science. Some
like to engineer robots that could help us in the near future. Some people like to run and run and run
until they know that they accomplished something. This includes me. I enjoy running because it
helps me ease of stress, in a way, and helps me grow my strength. And because I enjoy running, I
decided to join the Cupertino Middle School cross country. Here I started to on the weekdays, not

The man shot the starter gun, and we were off. In the beginning I felt like I should just quit, but I
thought, what was all that practice for then? So I kept running anyways. I passed a couple guys

even though they weren't cheering for me, it helped me keep running. The run went by very quickly

throwing up at that point. I slowed down, but then I heard my dad cheering on for me. I couldn't let
him down, so I ignored the feeling of throwing up and sprinted. I kept on running passing a couple

Personnel Incident Accounting Research Paper
A Personnel Incident Accounting Application
School emergencies can range from a simple fire drill to a full–on armed intruder. One of the hardest
tasks to do in an emergency is to account for everyone to ensure folks are safe and to avoid sending
emergency personnel into a hazardous area looking for people who may actually already be safe. It's
also important to know if someone is still in a hazardous area and exactly where to make rescue
quicker and more efficient.
My proposed application would allow for an organization, such as a school, account for students,
faculty, and visitors in a simpler, faster and more accurate way by leveraging today's smartphone
technology and organizations already existing personnel tracking systems. Smartphones ... Show

would take longer than the allowed time for the project. The other issue about how would a student
check in if they didn't have a phone would be solved by when the student checks in they use their
username/id number to check in through the app. So all they would have to do if find a friend with a
cellular device and plug in their school id number and they are then checked in. I also have some
different ideas for the apps later development like having a menu that would allow medical

Does A Lengthened Day Make A Difference? Essay
Does a lengthened day make a difference? Kindergarten plays a crucial role in the growth and
development of a child. It is at the kindergarten level where the child begins the basis for the rest of
their path through education. Educators are constantly looking into new ways of improving the
kindergarten curriculum and environment in order to provide their students with the most adequate
education possible. There is always some criticism when it comes to change; as in the case with
changing half–day to full–day kindergarten. After extensive research, I have found a number of
studies comparing full–day and half–day kindergarten programs that show young children benefit
more from a developmentally structured full–day kindergarten program, most notably in terms of
academic achievement. Having the extra hours during the school day allows students to learn more
and apply what they have learned. In this paper, I propose to answer the question of whether it is
more beneficial for young children to attend full–day as opposed to half–day kindergarten programs,
in relation to academic achievement, while exploring some of the attitudes and opinions that
surround full–day and half–day kindergarten programs. I would also like to make note that the
majority of research used in this paper is derived from studies conducted within the United States,
and the purpose of improving education in the United States is slightly different than that in Canada.
Research has suggested that young

be based on a thorough analysis of the current operation. In addition, the impact of implementation
of the proposed project/program on the future operation of a school foodservice system must be

analysis would be critical in making a final decision on whether to progress and how that
progression should occur. A feasibility study provides the process for this analysis. This chapter will

Essay on Censorship and Book Banning
Censorship is a concept with several different meanings. To each individual censorship has its own
meaning. Is it a violation of our rights or is it a protection for our well being? Censorship in the
generic sense refers to the suppression of information, ideas, or opinions. It occurs in all forms of
communication from technological media to print media. Each society, culture, or individual's belief
is violated by the codes of censorship that our society instills.
Book banning is a prime target for censorship. Censorship in print media, notably book banning,
occurs across homes, schools, stores, and other facilities daily. Censorship in the schools is the most
widespread and exposed place for book banning. Do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The book was a classic by Ralph Ellison, The Invisible Man. The African American poet, Nikki

Edmund White for having a brief reference to homosexuality. Even though only a few cases go to
court, schools around the country encompass incidents of prohibition of books.
Are school boards or administrators imposing their views of morality, politics, or religious beliefs?
Who has the power to violate our freedom to read? We, as citizens of the United States, are
guaranteed to the freedom to read in the U.S. Constitution. Are they attempting to take these rights
away by banning books? There are activists, both private and public, that are trying to curtail our
selection of books through demonstration, letters, and books of their own. If books such as One

from stores across the country, how are we supposed to educate ourselves on real life issues like aids
and religion outside classes? We need resources to find out facts we want to know and maybe are

Aspects Of Ell Education And Student Achievement
There are many aspects of ELL education to be explored. In order to effectively inform policy on
ELL education, one must consider what affects student achievement, how to keep education
adequate and equitable with the inclusion of ELLs, and how ELL education affects funding of
schools. These topical areas of research, while not exhaustive, are helpful in framing the larger topic
of this paper: if varying numbers of ELLs affect the state mechanism for funding ELL education.
ELL Education and Student Achievement
One of the first questions one must consider when dealing with ELL acquisition is what differences
affect student achievement. In ELL education, there is a great amount of variation within the
different approaches to teaching ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other aspects of program implementation were not significant to ELL students but affected non–
ELL students' scores. Overall, they found that states placing more of an emphasis on bilingual
education had ELLs scoring higher in reading tests.
While their study is helpful in understanding how state emphasis on ELL education makes a
difference, one shortcoming of their study is that while they do have a limited categorical model for
how they determined state emphasis it only surveys eight states in their analysis. Furthermore, while
they survey the historical development of ELL programs nationally, it fails to explain why some
states place more emphasis (through more tailored programs) on ELL education. This last failing
demonstrates the need for a study demonstrating the link between ELLs and policy.
Adequacy and Equity of ELL Education
ELL education is important when considering the adequacy and equity of education for ELLs and
non–ELLs alike. Ramirez et al. studied the adequacy and equity of funding ELLs in Colorado
through categorical funding in the English Language Proficiency Act (ELPA) and determined the
effect of ELL enrollment in conjunction with the ELPA program on school districts. He found that in

now they have to worry about finding certain cases or backpacks to carry their new tablet or
notebook computer in. Not all backpacks are suitable to keep the laptop safe from harm. These
harms can include theft, damage to tablet and many more. Theft is one of the biggest concerns. At
the Miramar High School, they wanted to integrate technology into the curriculum for a project.

robbers, some armed with weapons, when the students were walking to and from school and 6 from

Administrative Foundation Essay
From the Ground Up: Administrative Foundations A positive classroom environment and climate is
of paramount importance to the collective learning experience. A well–managed classroom improves
student concentration, increases the effectiveness of instruction, and maximizes learning. A poorly

Educators establish the classroom environment through consistent practices, detailed expectations,

Classroom Reflection
On November 11, 2017 I attended the Victoria Crossroads Council for Math Educators from 8:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This event is hosted twice a year, once during the Fall semester and once during
the Spring semester. The conference is hosted by Dr. Barba Patton and Dr. Teresa LeSage Clements.
Students in the education program at UHV in Victoria and Katy, come together to present and teach
lessons on Science and Math. There is a morning keynote speaker, a lunch speaker, and a closing
ceremony speaker the speakers are individuals involved in the field of education that present on
topics regarding education.
The opening keynote speaker for the conference was Ms. Joy Gawlik. Ms. Gawlik is currently a 5th
grade teacher in Blooming ISD and presented a presentation on financial literacy in the classroom. I
found her presentation to very informative and helpful for my future classroom and while I have
seen classroom economies in action, this was my first time being taught about it. She provided me
with information on how and when to start teaching my students about the monetary system in our
classroom and when to conduct and open the "store." Children begin learning about money in
kindergarten and as they advance in grades they are then required to learn even more about money
and how it works. A classroom economy allows teachers to teach students how they receive money
by providing them with pay for classroom jobs and additional ways to earn money. Students also
lean about using money to pay for things by purchasing items from a shop or paying fines for
missing work or bad behavior. A classroom economy can be made as simple as a teacher would like
by just using money or become more complex by issuing debit cards, checks, or teaching students
how to balance a bank account with their money. Ms. Gawlik has great ideas for her classroom shop
that she opens and lets students use their classroom money for. One year after learning that one of
her students lacked adequate food at home she decided to include food and toiletry items in her
shop. At the end of the day with the frequency depending on time and classroom behavior she would

teachers. More Michigan public school districts contracted out in 2009 for at least one of the three
main support services –food, custodial or transportation– according to the Mackinac Center for
Public Policy's annual privatization survey. The school districts are not mandated to provide
transportation services, and some districts have stopped providing transportation completely to save
on cost. The estimated per–pupil savings estimates from transportation privatization are significant
as the state Legislature discusses reducing the state–aid foundation grant per pupil. THUSD can
begin looking at saving money in the area of transportation efficiencies. Because the district is
experiencing enrollment decline in the county of a decrease in households with school–aged
children would provide a good opportunity to consolidate or discontinue its transportation services.

Abstract
Being a successful superintendent involves not only making difficult decisions, but making choices
that are in the best interest of the school board, teachers, student and the community. The focus of
this exercise is to identify research supported strategies that can be applied effectively to assist in the
development of a school district improvement plan. Specifically, this paper will provide
supplementary support related to a school improvement initiative focusing on improving the quality
and proficiency of student writing.
Ed.D Comprehensive Examination Written Prompt
A necessity for a school system devoted to sustained improvement of the teaching and learning
process is the creation of a comprehensive school improvement plan. The benefit of such a plan is
that it provides quality control, internal conformity, communication linkages and financial assistance
necessary for ensuring sustained improvement towards meeting the school district's vision, mission
and goals. The improvement plan selected will focus on student writing skills. This plan will reflect
the data and research necessary for successful implementation and will be linked to the Nebo School
district's mission and vision, specifically Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC)

The Challenges And Issues Facing Schools
Introduction
The challenges and issues facing schools are becoming more complex subtle to address. There is a
tendency towards school board members seeking to advance personal interests and agendas on the
board's decisions which has enhanced the instances of conflicts of interest and controversial issues
in many schools. The distinction between the roles and responsibilities of the board members from
those of the superintendent has become blurred, making it essential that superintendents make
decisions that enable them survive in their roles. According to the California School Boards
Association, CSBA, (2013), the school board has the responsibility of establishing and adopting
various policies that set the overall direction and vision for district schools. School boards are
involved in strategic planning for the schools, through identification of strategic goals and priorities
for the district, Alberta School Boards Association, ASBA, (n. d). Through various policy
formulations, school boards assert their philosophy by developing various frameworks and
guidelines that steer the school system and actions of its employees.
Decision making in the school district
School boards make various decisions in executing their mandates. They are engaged in gathering,
evaluating and processing information for decision making, while giving due consideration to the
interests of all students. The school board may however make an approval to delegate some of its
tasks to an individual

The Negative Effects Of Dropping The Dropouts In Schools
Dropping the Dropouts
Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change
the world." It is difficult to prevent temptation within the student population when it comes to the
harmful aspects of our society and the effect it has. Most students strive to be "cool" or "popular" or
simply fit in when they attend grade school. Although not all students fall into the wrong path, every
student deserves assistance and the opportunity to grow and prosper. In the Pasadena Independent
School District (PISD) about 90% of the students are minorities. Meanwhile, in 2015 the highest
percentage of drop outs within ethnic groups was 9.6%; it belonged to a minority. Although
minorities tend to have higher dropout rates, there are nonprofit organizations established such as
the Communities In Schools After–school Centers on Education program (CIS–ACE). As an
employee of this particular organization, I can confirm that our main focus is student success in the
Pasadena ISD. Regardless of all the positive effects is has within our community and the hard work
we put toward the program, it is no longer receiving a grant to furthermore continue this program
even though it is evident that students in Pasadena ISD would be benefitted more than most
compared to other school districts. This is because there is not enough support from the
administrators in the district and because those who distribute the grants deliberately decided to give
it to another district.

An Effective Classroom Management Plan Essay
Implications of Classroom Management
There are many things that a teacher must think about when creating their classroom management
plan. One of these things involves the legal and ethical implications as they relate to the rights and
responsibilities of students, parents, and teachers. I have reviewed several articles related to this
subject, and will give a brief overview of each of them as well as tell how they will make a
difference in the way that I manage my own classroom. Most of the articles, that I chose, pertain to
the lack of parental involvement in their children's lives which leads to problems that teachers must
deal with. These articles pertain to the social and economic situations that are causing a lot of the
problems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a high school football and girls softball coach for the last 20 years, the fear of litigation has
always been a concern. I have learned, many ways of protecting myself in the event of a lawsuit, all
of which will be beneficial in the classroom. Documenting, that you have taught safe behaviors, in
the classroom, will limit the chances that you could be found liable. The article that I read has also
eased my fears in the knowledge that the courts are favoring the schools in most cases. As you
usually only hear about the cases in which the school districts lost. As I have had to deal with the
fear of litigation as a coach in sports were injuries do happen, the fear of litigation resulting from
something happening in the classroom does not bother me personally. The second article, The
Standardized Classroom, by Leslie Rayburn, describes the problems that are causing a lot of
teachers to abandon the profession, and others to become disillusioned. She states;
One of the problems that teachers face today is that the students who are coming into the classrooms
now are needier than ever before. This is due in part to the many societal pressures that cause
parents to have less time to spend with their children. Teachers have to deal with basic emotional
needs that weren't an issue before. This drains them and prevents them from doing their jobs well.

A Student Board Representative For My School District
Fifteen years ago, I served as the student board representative for my school district. All I can really
remember is being entertained by emotional parent complaints and listening to jargon–filled
presentations. Upon receiving my first pink slip from that same district seven years later, I spoke at a
school board meeting for the first time. Three years later, I was motivated by another pink slip to
speak in front of a school board––this time as a teacher for my current school district, San Diego
County Office of Education (SDCOE) Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS). Since that
first pink slip scare with JCCS, I have been a regular attendee at SDCOE board meetings. I try my
best to pay attention and even take notes when JCCS is on the agenda. I have spoken on behalf of
my students and coworkers and even helped to introduce my site's student board representative.
However, I honestly spend most of the meetings bored by detailed presentations about programs far
removed from my classroom or confused by topics that I do not completely understand. However, I
keep attending. During the past few weeks, I attended the San Diego Unified School District
(SDUSD) June 2 meeting and the SDCOE June 10 meeting. After observing a board meeting in a
traditional school district for the first time in ten years, I was reminded of the strong parent and
community voice that is often shared during board meetings in local districts. On the other hand

All American Boys Research Paper
Would you rather read fiction or nonfiction books? In some countries they are starting to take fiction
books out of schools. The book I am reading is " All American boys" by Jason Reynolds and
Brendan Kiley. This book is about a young teenage African American boy getting physically
assaulted by a white police officer. All American boys is a fiction book, however it has many life
lesson and real life events that we may not always be aware of. Despite the school board's recent
segment regarding the lack of fuel that fiction provides, fiction should remain in the school's
curriculum. I make this statement due to the fact that fiction books teach people life lessons.
Secondly, some people dislike reading books that aren't fiction because people do not get the

School districts feel they need to take out fiction books because they feel the non fictions books
have more benefits than fiction books. Some believe that non fiction book are more accurate than
fiction books because they focus on real life events. They think that if they take out fiction books
everyone will read non–fiction books and people will understand and learn what life is really like. I
have found an article, and in this article it talks about how a school district took out some fiction
books from the school. The students were affected because if they start taking fiction books now,
then what will the students generations from now read? Now it's not only affecting us, it's affecting
other generations after us.I think we should have a say in what we read and what we don't. If school
districts make us read only non fiction books ,then most of the students in the schools won't be as
interested to read because the books may not be ast interesting. Schools districts across America are

Essay TAAS Test and STAAR Educational Test in Texas
Dallas ISD Needs A New System of Governance
In the 1990's, I grew up taking the TAAS test or Texas Assessment of Academic Skills. I did not
know why we had to take them but everyone had to and teachers tried to prepare us as much as they
can. Then in the 2003, the state decided to change it to TAKS test or Texas Assessment of
Knowledge and Skills. I knew that I had passed, but as a student we do not question why we have to
take these tests. We are only told that they are important to our education and graduating to the next
grade or from high school. A few years afterwards they had switched to a new standardized test form
called STAAR which stands for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness. It seems that a

scores but they are not. Here lies the question why are we out performed by other districts if not by
number of students enrolled then what? The main problem exists in the first place because of the
standardized tests. Because we are a large district there are problems with the funding and getting
good teachers to teach at the schools in Dallas. If we are constantly changing the test format and we
keep getting lower scores who would want to work for Dallas ISD. By changing the format of tests
students take they have to reassess their objectives in each respective grade level. Teachers are often
forced to teach for the tests rather than their subject. It used to be that we were only graded by our
teachers and how they taught their classes. We only had to make sure that we knew the subject
matter as taught by the teacher. Then standardized testing came into play which made it fair for all
the students because teachers had a power over student's grades. A system of checks and balances
came into play and standardized testing became the norm. Then there were more and more changes
in testing and still today teachers focus more on what the test will be about rather than subject

"STAAR Testing and Its Negative Effects"???
Every spring since 2012, every student attending 3rd grade through 8th grade and high school
students across The State of Texas, sit down and takes the Texas Assessments of Academic
Readiness or The STAAR Test. The STAAR test is what student's in Texas are taught about from the
first time they enter their new classrooms, each year and what their teachers are required to teach.
The STAAR tests in Texas decide student's assessment of where they are to the core curriculum
standards basically an Assessment of Academic level to what they learned all year. With the way our
students are being taught in Texas is a problem, STAAR testing not only follows them through their
next grade levels, but their academic careers, even into college and eventually their careers, with
that and the amount of pressure and stress being put on Texas children, from one test, the bar is
being raised too high for our children in Texas. As well as the way it is affecting our teachers in
Texas. STAAR testing scores are held against Texas teachers keeping their jobs every year. It affects
our children's school's funding, with teachers evaluates based on test scores and school's waiting for
score results for funding, our children are being thrown in the middle of it, is this the future and
education we want for our children, our student's and the schools they attend in Texas?

Evaluation And Assessment Of Special Education
When working in the field of special education, one must become intimately familiar with
evaluations and assessments. Any individualized education plan worth its salt is laden with proposed
or completed data from evaluations and/or assessments both summative and formative. Which I
believe is a vital piece to every individualized plan in special education that successfully removes
the access barriers confronting students and allowing them the greatest academic potential. Yet in
the past when it came to teacher evaluations, I have had an extreme bias in believing they had any
worth or value at all. I felt this was a bureaucratic evil that only increased the anxiety level of

Even more frustration comes in because I feel like my students would have been greatly impacted if
I had administrators that actually believed positively in the evaluation system and used it to support
the building of effective teaching practices. With this all said I do not desire to point the finger or
cast stones at those individuals that gave me the privilege of working in this wonderful profession.
But through them I have learned how powerful it is to have a vision, be able to articulate it, and
implement said vision by doing the "right work" (Marzano, Waters and McNulty 76).
The implementation of SB 290 came at a time of transition for my district. The superintendent, who
was in his fourth year, had the entire district working on developing and aligning essential outcomes
though newly formed professional learning communities when SB 290 came to fruition. Every
teacher was being told that we knew what was best for our students, so work together and decided
on what we think is essential for our students to learn. On top of that, we were being told to use
proficiencies to determine if our students were learning and expected to develop these proficiencies
along with common formative assessments. We were directed to do this work inside the bubble of
our newly formed PLC's. I should also mention that our superintendent had a low value for outside
professional development, so the only training that came during this time

The Pros And Cons Of Shorter School Days
A lot of parents are shaking their heads at the consideration of a four–day school week, and a longer
school day. Shorter school weeks or longer school days are reasonable solutions when there is a
shortage of funding, or possible budget cuts coming to the school district. This solution has many
mixed opinions from parents, teachers and school board members. An article from The Wichita
Eagle really focuses on one family and how the change to longer school days has impacted them and
their first–grade son. It also has some views from a few other parents and a couple of teachers and
board members. Suzanne Tobias wrote the article "The struggle over longer school days" that is on
The Wichita Eagle. In her article, she has the viewpoints of families, teachers and school board
members. One family that is brought up a lot, is the Biggs family. Rachel and Doug Biggs talk about
how longer school days have impacted their family, especially their first–grade son, Liam. To start
off, Rachel talks about how her son loves to play basketball at their local YMCA, but when he gets
home from "nearly eight hours of school, and a rushed dinner in the car or at home, he sometimes
falls asleep on his way to games or practices" (Tobias). She also said that the new schedule has
taxing in all sorts of ways on everybody. One school district, took off 15 school days, and added 30
minutes to each day, all part of a $3 million budget cut. Having the 30 minutes added to the school
day,

The High School Sports Program
In this scenario you have a coach who is the pride and joy of the community and a principal who is
faced with a difficult decision. As a sort of figurehead of the high school, the coach has a
longstanding positive relationship with many members in the community. High school sports
programs are often integral part of rural communities, as is demonstrated in this scenario. Mr.
Bradley has not only been the basketball coach for the past 15 years, but in this role he has secured
donations that have been used to make major improvements to the athletic program. The community
support of the coach is a critical issue in this scenario because the principal must take into
consideration the reactions of the community based on the decision that is made related to Coach
Bradley's future. If the decision is made to terminate the coach, the principal could face backlash
from the community resulting in fewer donations as well as lack of support for other school
initiatives.
The other critical issue that is present is the inappropriate relationship between staff member and
student. As an employee of the school district, Mr. Bradley is expected to act in a professional
manner with both staff and students. The physical contact he initiated with the student was
unprofessional and could be seen as an abuse of power. As the scenario states, this is not the first
time such indiscretions have been made by Coach Bradley. Even though the coach is a beloved
member of the community, the principal must

All of which–plus a natural supply of political eccentrics–helps explain how Texas once had a board
member who believed that public schools are the tool of the devil.
Texas originally acquired its power over the nation's textbook supply because it paid 100 percent of
the cost of all public school textbooks, as long as the books in question came from a very short list
of board–approved options. The selection process "was grueling and tension–filled," said Julie
McGee, who worked at high levels in several publishing houses before her retirement. "If you didn't
get listed by the state, you got nothing." On the other side of the coin, David Anderson, who once
sold textbooks in the state, said that if a book made the list, even a fairly mediocre salesperson could
count on doing pretty well. The books on the Texas list were likely to be mass–produced by the
publisher in anticipation of those sales, so other states liked to buy them and take advantage of the
economies of scale.
"What happens in Texas doesn't stay in Texas when it comes to textbooks," said Dan Quinn, who
worked as an editor of social studies textbooks before joining the Texas Freedom Network, which
was founded by Governor Ann Richards's daughter, Cecile, to counter the religious right.

These tests have become all schools and districts are worth. It does create some sort of competition,
but it is a very unfair competition as small as student to student to as big as district to district. When
these tests are all that matters, it creates a complex within the system that can be very unhealthy on
all levels. According to a Dallas TV station investigation, "the cost to develop and administer these
tests has been about $60 million–$90 million a year". Furthermore, according to Victoria Advocate,
Texas, alone, has spent $1.5 billion in the past two decades on the testing machine. This brings up
the question, why is so much spent on testing? If so much money is being spent on it, why are
students and teachers not seeing the supposed benefits?
Standardized testing is now a substantial part of Texas' public education system. Just in recent times
have lawmakers noticed the not so positive effects of standardized testing. A lawmaker from central
Texas wants to "take the weight off standardized testing in Texas with the Teaching Over Testing
Act" (Brandeis). Lawmakers in Texas want to take focus away from testing and put it back into

emphasis and dependence on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness or STAAR
test. Isaac states, "We have these independent school districts, we need to give them the authority

Argumentative Essay Against School Uniforms
Say Yes to School Uniforms: An Argumentative Essay In Favor Of School Uniforms
The controversy about students wearing school uniforms is met with approval and criticism.
Although school uniforms are becoming more favorable, some students, parents, and administrators
oppose the school uniform policy arguing that school uniforms deny students' rights to express
themselves. "The percentage of public schools implementing a uniform rule jumped from 13% to
19% between the 2003–04 and the 2011–12 academic years" (Lake). School Uniforms do reduce the
choice of clothing that the student can wear, but it does not lessen their education; the purpose of
them being there. Students can express their individual style of clothes outside of the classroom.
School is a place to learn, and when the choice of clothing is narrowed, the students can direct their
full attention to academics. Former Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton advocated for uniforms in
school. She said: "Take that (clothing choices) off the table and put the focus on school not what
you're wearing." (Clinton). Although school uniforms limit individuality, school uniforms should be
required in order to improve social dynamics and the overall health of the school.
School uniforms create solidarity and enforcing a uniform policy would make all the students look
similar. This addresses peer pressure issues and ceases students trying to "fit in" by wearing stylish
or trendy clothes. Statistically, school uniforms have positively impacted schools in the areas of
violence and truancy. "According to research 42% of parents and 80% of teachers agreed or strongly
agreed that school uniforms promoted school pride and a sense of community. Some people feel that
students will feel more connected to their school and classmates. Furthermore, 36% of parents and
52% of teachers agreed and strongly agreed that school uniforms eliminated competition among
students" (Statistic Brain Research Institute Online/Direct Response Mail). This positively impacts
the school by reducing bullying, and gang–related activities. By establishing a uniform policy, the
financial load that parents encounter could be minimized. For parents, August and September is the
time they usually

The Importance Of Classroom Debate
Studies have verified the benefits of using classroom discussion to increase overall student
achievement (Li, Murphy, & Firetto, 2014; McKeown, Beck, & Blake, 2009; Murphy et al., 2017;
Wolf, Crosson, & Resnick, 2006). The studies stressed the importance of teacher facilitation during
discussion and the overall goal of student ownership over discussion. This study investigated
Discussion Stem Discourse (DSD) and the impact it had over student ownership of the discussion
around literature.
When teachers are trained in the most effective discussion techniques and questioning methods,
students assume considerable responsibility for the success of the discussion by initiating topics and
making unsolicited contributions (Danielson, 2007, p. 82). Fully student–led discussions must be
explicitly taught to students through the gradual release model and practiced regularly. The ultimate
goal is that students assume considerable responsibility for the success of the discussion, initiate
topics, and make unsolicited contributions (Danielson, 2007, p. 82). Based on Resnick's
groundbreaking 1999 research, Michaels, O'Connor, Hall, and Resnick (2010) lay the foundation for
a successful implementation of student discussion. They defined AT as classroom talk (by both
students and teachers) that supports students to attend to the classroom community, to knowledge,
and to accepted standards of reasoning (Michaels, O'Connor, & Resnick, 2008). In AT classrooms,

Personal Narrative: Across The Country And Back Again
Across the Country and Back Again
Have you ever considered dropping your old life, moving someplace far away, and starting over?
I've done that, twice in my life. When I was seven or eight, my family decided to move across the

My sisters and I were enthusiastic about the idea of living on a farm. My father was into the idea
because his mom lived in California, and he was interested in visiting her. I was afraid of flying at

Local Controls Funding Formula And Local Control...
At a town hall meeting during the March 11th California Association of African–American
Superintendents and Administrators (CAAASA) annual conference, panel members openly spoke
about the transformation to the way California would fund education for the nine million public
school students it serves. This panel discussion offered various stakeholder viewpoints around the
Local Control Funding Formula and the Local Control Accountability Plan. Each member of the
panel contributed honestly about LCFF and LCAP as it relates to the states vision of moving
forward in trying to close the achievement gap for all students. Paul Richman, California State PTA
Executive Director opened the conversation by saying "districts need to focus on three T's: Trust,
Transparency, and Tenacity". He emphasized the importance of parent involvement by stating
"parent engagement is not a check–off item, it is a long term investment of time, resources,
dedication, and capacity". Developing this new funding approach, legislators and state government
officials restructured the present funding formula replacing it with a more equitable transparent
system known as the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). The primary goal of the LCFF is to
eliminate the blatant achievement gaps that exist by creating equity and access through increased
educational opportunities for all students. In the same way, Vernon Billy, California association's

Frankly, the whole exchange of dialogue is exhausting and I have given in more times than I'd like

rewards and benefits for both the parent and child and should be implemented in all elementary

These benefits include: reduced headache and stress in the morning, reduced expense of clothing,
increased focus on academics in the classroom, increased building of team spirit among classmates,
and the, for lack of a better word, non–discrimination on the popularity poll. I'll begin with

The Business Manager/Director of Education Wears Many Hats
Education has many faces, one of them being that of the business manager/director. This particular

foundation that supports a solid financial operation. I would define this role as being one that
maintains strategic financial plans that allows them to manage the administration of personnel
functions in the school. They are also responsible for budget modelling, drawing up base budgets,
provisional budges as well as final budgets. They monitor salaries and expenditure and advise the
district Superintendent. It is also their roles to ensure that all records of expenditures are up to date

Another aspect of their job is making sure that accurate records of personnel files are kept, including
absences are maintained and information passed on for payroll services as necessary. They are

How Technology Can Make Their Jobs More Effective? Essay
With the capabilities and wide–spread availability of technology, it is not uncommon to use
electronic machines and computers in our everyday lives. Whether it is a business, government,
hospital, or car repair shop, people utilize technology to make their jobs more effective, efficient,
and enjoyable. One societal institution where the incorporation of technology seems most beneficial
is in our schools, especially in K–12. Through the use of technology, education is made more
accessible, versatile, engaging, and easier for both students and teachers. It is no surprise that
technology can make information much more accessible. For instance, the simple act of researching
the formula for the area of a triangle can be simplified to a search on the Internet. As such, students
are able to use sites like YouTube, Wikipedia, Quizlet to gain varyingly different points of view
about the subject they are studying. They are also able to return to any point in a video lesson
presentation and review it over and over until they either memorize the details or grasp the concepts
that it contains or both. In contrast, the traditional brick and mortar school does not allow for such
meaningful repetition. If a student does not immediately understand the concept being presented,
they are left to either read from their confusing, often unintelligible textbook or to seek out a fellow
student for assistance. Even then, these students still might not be able to understand the concepts

Use Of Facilities By Religious Groups

  • 1. Use of Facilities by Religious Groups Week 1 Case Studies David Fernandez School Law Use of Facilities by Religious Groups 1. Yes, I believe the Bible club has legitimate grounds to file suit for use of school facilities. Principal Gayle Dixon's decision to deny the club use is based on her interpretation of the club's charter to be discriminatory and not necessarily the law's or districts. 2. No, I would say principal Dixon is not justified to deny use of school facilities because she is making the judgment based her beliefs and not the eye of the law's. 3. Yes, the Bible club has the right to specify that only Christians may be club officers based on the fact that the Bible club members all agree or vote for the standards of the charter for the club. ... If school officials knew a violent act was threatened to occur or if there should have been a school official on duty where the students were and was not, the school could be held liable for the injury. 5. If students were in an unauthorized area of school grounds the school may not be held liable or if school officials had exercised all viable options in dealing with a threatening situation. 6. • 3. A Report Card For Yankton School District For the first project requirements, I collected data for the Yankton School District and the Mitchell School District from the South Dakota Department of Education's website. I specifically looked at each district's report card that included performance indicators, school performance index, staffing and student population statistics, attendance numbers and high school completion and college and career readiness statistics. Each school district's report card contained further detailed information and percentages regarding test scores in math, ELA, and science. After collecting and organizing the data from the district report card for Yankton School District, one of the most interesting trends I found was the difference in scores between 2013 and 2014. For the years 2012 and 2013, scores were reported on four levels: Below Basic, Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. Then in 2014, the scores were reported on a new leveling system including the four levels: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4. When reviewing the different levels, I compared Level 1 to Below Basic. In 2013 for the 6th–grade class, out of 190 students, 0.53% of those students scored at the Below Basic level in math. However, in 2014 for the 6th–grade class, out of 166 students, 32.32% of those students scored at Level 1. Even when evaluating the same group of students, the 7th grade class for 2014, I noticed a rather large increase as well, with 23.30% of 209 students scoring at the Level 1. I found a similar ... • 5. Texas Constitution: The Texas State Board Of Education Article 7 ,Section 8 of the Texas Constitution states "STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION. The Legislature shall provide by law for a State Board of Education, whose members shall be appointed or elected in such manner and by such authority and shall serve for such terms as the Legislature shall prescribe not to exceed six years. The said board shall perform such duties as may be prescribed by law."(Texas Constitution,1928). I personally think that the school board of Texas is corrupt. The duties that are prescribed to them are a "set up " to students. The Texas State Board of Education is an injustice to adolescent growth, and they provide several hindrances to the youth in Texas. These impediments revolve around school funding, lack of supplies, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Most teachers can tell you that they spend a good amount of money every year on supplies. Sometimes it is for individual students, sometimes for class use. I am not talking about iPod's and such, I am talking about paper, staplers, glue and tape. I have already spent over $200." (S. Mattiza,2006) Due to me being a high school student, I have to totally agree with the previous statement that was made. I have been in Desoto Independent School District since I was in the sixth grade. At one point of time, the school was not providing my teachers with copy paper so, we as students had to bring in copy paper for extra credit. Things like this do not just happen in Desoto Independent School District, I also attended a couple of schools in Dallas ISD. I remember us not being able to take home books for extra study time because the State Board of Education only provided a class set of books for each class. Sometimes we even had to share books because the older the books got ,the worse the condition of the books were. Also, some classes that required books did not have them because they were not provided for students. This is when I started to realize how corrupt the Texas State Board of Education actually was ,because they are responsible for the overseeing of the permanent school fund. • 7. Technology As A Tool For Teaching Students As times change, so does usage of technology. More and more schools across the world are using technology as a tool in teaching their students. While there are several districts that teach in the "traditional" sense, there has been a steady incline as to the amount of school districts across the world that are switching to iPads and other electronic devices to aide in the pupil's education. Depending on the administrators, students are allowed to bring their devices to the classroom (BYOD, Bring Your Own Device), while other districts receive grants and other types of funding to purchase a technology device for each student. The primary concern to many districts is the cost factor. First and foremost, the school district has to purchase ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main question posed with these technological advances in education is, is it really benefiting the children enough to budget that much money to purchase all of these electronic devices? According to a study done in Scotland, by using the traditional "holistic" way of teaching, there is a gap in gender according to Department for Education and Skills, there has been a steady 10% difference in male and females. Instead of both sexes being equal, males have had the shorter end of the stick. (Department for Education and Skills, 2003) When the schools were able to integrate the Apple iPads, researchers and observers noticed that the male's scores were able to increase to the average girl's score. A huge concern was the fact that male's were slowly but surely falling behind in their academics. Although this does not prove that the money spent on this expedition has been worth their while, it does improve many student's participation and interest in the academic department. (McPhee & Marks, 2013) One crucial and possible setback, if not closely monitored and taken into consideration is the fact that some teachers do not want the Apple iPads integrated into their teaching techniques. A good portion of teachers are from the "traditional" type of teaching and ready to retire after so many years of using the same routine. They might ask, "I'm about to leave so why should I even bother learning something this new and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Arts Have Been Long-Recognized As A Vital Component The arts have been long–recognized as a vital component of the well–rounded student, but for the past several decades, the importance of arts programs in many U.S. schools has been steadily compromised (Rabkin & Redmond, 2006). Pressure to compete internationally has influenced educational institutions to believe that an almost exclusive focus on academic fundamentals is the sole way to raise standards and close the achievement gap (Sholl & Sweetland, 2016). Katz– Buonincontro, Phillips, and Witherspoon (2015) expound on the predicament of today's schools: expected to promote twenty–first century skills, including creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, leaders are simultaneously pushed to uphold standards–based ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Add the lack of esteem for the arts to the aforementioned budget and standardized testing issues, and very little room is left for the arts, a subject that often loses in the battle for precious time and resources. Appel (2006) evokes the spirit of the arts through Leonardo da Vinci, the "original" Renaissance man – artist, mathematician, inventor, astronomer, and leader – who drew inspiration from everything around him, including the arts. During his time, the arts were a required part of any educational curriculum, whether formal or informal. A means to reflect on the human condition, the arts were "considered inseparable from the sciences and other academic disciplines" and a vital part of community life (Appel, 2006, p. 14). Goodman (2015) furthers this notion by explaining that people – both yesterday and today – embrace the arts to gain understanding and perspective into the more immaterial questions of life. Da Vinci's brilliance came from the world around him, a world that cared deeply about intellectual curiosity and inspired creativity. The modern arguments surrounding the arts do not deny their value, yet they get lost when faced with demands about budget, their direct impact on test scores, and where exactly they fit in a given curriculum. Many public schools have seen their arts programs disappearing, despite the numerous studies publicizing the benefits, including increased academic achievement, creativity, confidence, and ... This position is one of the most prominent positions in an educational community. Because of this, school superintendents must be an outstanding citizen and a person of excellent character. Moreover, they must be able to communicate effectively with parents, community, and all stakeholders. Superintendents are responsible for leading every function for a school. Every Student Succeeds Act, was signed into law in 2015 and is replacing the No Child Left Behind Act. ESSA is a system that gives states more flexibility as it relates to funding, assessment and accountability. Moreover, there are many positive components to ESSA that will help a superintendent be effective in their position. One positive concept of the ESSA accountability system is that it will utilize the federal and state standards by merging them into one while the efficiency is analyzed. In addition to this, ESSA ended the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) requirement that was designed Under the No Child Left Behind Law while allowing states to eliminate unnecessary assessments. According to (Feagan, 2009), AYP was defined during this time as a stronger accountability measure. It was the only accountability system used to determine if schools were successful. This law made it difficult for superintendents to effectively move schools because AYP looked at individual subgroups in addition to individual groups. And so, if a superintendent was the leader of a district that had a high poverty rate, the test results in many cases were lower (2009.) Thus, making it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We were told to go to a regular government meeting, for instance, a city council meeting or a school board meeting, and observe the proceedings and then write about what took place at the meeting. These government meetings are usually held at the town's city halls or if it were a school board meeting then they would take place at the school's central office. Usually these meeting are held the first Tuesdays of every month. I chose to go to a meeting at Mercedes Central Office for a regular school board meeting. It took place at Monday, March 7, 2016 5:45 PM, and it was located at 206 West Sixth Street, Mercedes, Texas. The drive from my house to the Administration Office took a whole four minutes since I live nearby. Despite living nearby I drove in my blue 2005 Chevy Trailblazer to get to my destination. Once I arrived, I saw a midsized deep tiger orange building that had a mural of a tiger in between long grass and another mural of a white tiger majestically laying down. It was a beautiful sight to see. Where the sidewalk meets up in the front of the building is where there is a design made with rocks. In the design the white rocks were put in place to form the shape of the letter M, which stands for Mercedes and all around the M are orange rocks and a many different colored flowers to compliment the design. In the beginning I felt like I should just quit, but I thought, what was all that practice for then? So I kept running anyways. I passed a couple guys while we're going up and down, left and right. There were many people on the side cheering and even though they weren't cheering for me, it helped me keep running. The run went by very quickly and the finish line came up in a flash. Many people around me started sprinting, but I felt like throwing up at that point. I slowed down, but then I heard my dad cheering on for me. I couldn't let him down, so I ignored the feeling of throwing up and sprinted. I kept on running passing a couple people, and it was over. I came in 19th place. One of the hardest tasks to do in an emergency is to account for everyone to ensure folks are safe and to avoid sending emergency personnel into a hazardous area looking for people who may actually already be safe. It's also important to know if someone is still in a hazardous area and exactly where to make rescue quicker and more efficient. The other issue about how would a student check in if they didn't have a phone would be solved by when the student checks in they use their username/id number to check in through the app. So all they would have to do if find a friend with a cellular device and plug in their school id number and they are then checked in. • 19. Does A Lengthened Day Make A Difference? Essay Does a lengthened day make a difference? Kindergarten plays a crucial role in the growth and development of a child. It is at the kindergarten level where the child begins the basis for the rest of their path through education. Educators are constantly looking into new ways of improving the kindergarten curriculum and environment in order to provide their students with the most adequate education possible. There is always some criticism when it comes to change; as in the case with changing half–day to full–day kindergarten. After extensive research, I have found a number of studies comparing full–day and half–day kindergarten programs that show young children benefit more from a developmentally structured full–day kindergarten program, most notably in terms of academic achievement. Having the extra hours during the school day allows students to learn more and apply what they have learned. In this paper, I propose to answer the question of whether it is more beneficial for young children to attend full–day as opposed to half–day kindergarten programs, in relation to academic achievement, while exploring some of the attitudes and opinions that surround full–day and half–day kindergarten programs. I would also like to make note that the majority of research used in this paper is derived from studies conducted within the United States, and the purpose of improving education in the United States is slightly different than that in Canada. Research has suggested that young ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Is it a violation of our rights or is it a protection for our well being? Censorship in the generic sense refers to the suppression of information, ideas, or opinions. It occurs in all forms of communication from technological media to print media. Each society, culture, or individual's belief is violated by the codes of censorship that our society instills. In order to effectively inform policy on ELL education, one must consider what affects student achievement, how to keep education adequate and equitable with the inclusion of ELLs, and how ELL education affects funding of schools. These topical areas of research, while not exhaustive, are helpful in framing the larger topic of this paper: if varying numbers of ELLs affect the state mechanism for funding ELL education. Furthermore, while they survey the historical development of ELL programs nationally, it fails to explain why some states place more emphasis (through more tailored programs) on ELL education. The opening keynote speaker for the conference was Ms. Joy Gawlik. Ms. Gawlik is currently a 5th grade teacher in Blooming ISD and presented a presentation on financial literacy in the classroom. I found her presentation to very informative and helpful for my future classroom and while I have seen classroom economies in action, this was my first time being taught about it. She provided me with information on how and when to start teaching my students about the monetary system in our classroom and when to conduct and open the "store." Children begin learning about money in kindergarten and as they advance in grades they are then required to learn even more about money and how it works. A classroom economy allows teachers to teach students how they receive money by providing them with pay for classroom jobs and additional ways to earn money. Students also lean about using money to pay for things by purchasing items from a shop or paying fines for missing work or bad behavior. A classroom economy can be made as simple as a teacher would like by just using money or become more complex by issuing debit cards, checks, or teaching students how to balance a bank account with their money. Ms. Gawlik has great ideas for her classroom shop that she opens and lets students use their classroom money for. One year after learning that one of her students lacked adequate food at home she decided to include food and toiletry items in her shop. At the end of the day with the frequency depending on time and classroom behavior she would open her shop and the students would be able to buy food that they could take home. Food items ... It is difficult to prevent temptation within the student population when it comes to the harmful aspects of our society and the effect it has. Most students strive to be "cool" or "popular" or simply fit in when they attend grade school. Although not all students fall into the wrong path, every student deserves assistance and the opportunity to grow and prosper. In the Pasadena Independent School District (PISD) about 90% of the students are minorities. Regardless of all the positive effects is has within our community and the hard work we put toward the program, it is no longer receiving a grant to furthermore continue this program even though it is evident that students in Pasadena ISD would be benefitted more than most compared to other school districts. Every teacher was being told that we knew what was best for our students, so work together and decided on what we think is essential for our students to learn. On top of that, we were being told to use proficiencies to determine if our students were learning and expected to develop these proficiencies along with common formative assessments. We were directed to do this work inside the bubble of our newly formed PLC's. I should also mention that our superintendent had a low value for outside professional development, so the only training that came during this time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. The Pros And Cons Of Shorter School Days A lot of parents are shaking their heads at the consideration of a four–day school week, and a longer school day. Shorter school weeks or longer school days are reasonable solutions when there is a shortage of funding, or possible budget cuts coming to the school district. This solution has many mixed opinions from parents, teachers and school board members. An article from The Wichita Eagle really focuses on one family and how the change to longer school days has impacted them and their first–grade son. It also has some views from a few other parents and a couple of teachers and board members. Suzanne Tobias wrote the article "The struggle over longer school days" that is on The Wichita Eagle. In her article, she has the viewpoints of families, teachers and school board members. One family that is brought up a lot, is the Biggs family. Rachel and Doug Biggs talk about how longer school days have impacted their family, especially their first–grade son, Liam. To start off, Rachel talks about how her son loves to play basketball at their local YMCA, but when he gets home from "nearly eight hours of school, and a rushed dinner in the car or at home, he sometimes falls asleep on his way to games or practices" (Tobias). She also said that the new schedule has taxing in all sorts of ways on everybody. One school district, took off 15 school days, and added 30 minutes to each day, all part of a $3 million budget cut. Having the 30 minutes added to the school day, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. The High School Sports Program In this scenario you have a coach who is the pride and joy of the community and a principal who is faced with a difficult decision. As a sort of figurehead of the high school, the coach has a longstanding positive relationship with many members in the community. High school sports programs are often integral part of rural communities, as is demonstrated in this scenario. Mr. Bradley has not only been the basketball coach for the past 15 years, but in this role he has secured donations that have been used to make major improvements to the athletic program. The community support of the coach is a critical issue in this scenario because the principal must take into consideration the reactions of the community based on the decision that is made related to Coach Bradley's future. If the decision is made to terminate the coach, the principal could face backlash from the community resulting in fewer donations as well as lack of support for other school initiatives. The other critical issue that is present is the inappropriate relationship between staff member and student. As an employee of the school district, Mr. Bradley is expected to act in a professional manner with both staff and students. The physical contact he initiated with the student was unprofessional and could be seen as an abuse of power. As the scenario states, this is not the first time such indiscretions have been made by Coach Bradley. Even though the coach is a beloved member of the community, the principal must ... • 59. Texas Textbook Controversy ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Texas textbook controversy– Analysis Kim Stevenson Eastern New Mexico University CI 531 1WW March 3, 2013– Abstract: Ever since the 1960s, the Texas textbook controversy has had an issue in America. The Texas school board is meeting to make revisions to their textbooks and curriculum. But are they also revising history? Educators across the country are watching to see the effect this issue will have on students. The choices the board members are making will affect politics, religion, monies spent thru–out the Texas school system. Christian conservatives on the state education board want curriculum changes. Parents and student would like the curriculum to remain the same, or not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All of which–plus a natural supply of political eccentrics–helps explain how Texas once had a board member who believed that public schools are the tool of the devil. Texas originally acquired its power over the nation's textbook supply because it paid 100 percent of the cost of all public school textbooks, as long as the books in question came from a very short list of board–approved options. The selection process "was grueling and tension–filled," said Julie McGee, who worked at high levels in several publishing houses before her retirement. "If you didn't get listed by the state, you got nothing." On the other side of the coin, David Anderson, who once sold textbooks in the state, said that if a book made the list, even a fairly mediocre salesperson could count on doing pretty well. The books on the Texas list were likely to be mass–produced by the publisher in anticipation of those sales, so other states liked to buy them and take advantage of the economies of scale. "What happens in Texas doesn't stay in Texas when it comes to textbooks," said Dan Quinn, who worked as an editor of social studies textbooks before joining the Texas Freedom Network, which was founded by Governor Ann Richards's daughter, Cecile, to counter the religious right. The cost for the Texas textbooks? As a market, the state was so big and influential that national publishers tended to gear their books toward whatever it wanted. Back in ... • 61. Essay On Standardized Testing Standardized testing in public schools has become a norm across the United States. But, in Texas it has been found that students spend more time taking standardized tests than any other state ("Too Much Testing"). Standardized testing may be an asset to measure education, or more measure testing skills across the nation, but at what cost does it come? What are its effects on moral within the public education system, and how does the state government of Texas interact within it. Why does the Texas state government push standardized testing so hard, what benefit does Texas or other states get from the testing? There does need to be change in the standardized testing system in the United States, and more specifically in Texas. There have been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These tests have become all schools and districts are worth. It does create some sort of competition, but it is a very unfair competition as small as student to student to as big as district to district. When these tests are all that matters, it creates a complex within the system that can be very unhealthy on all levels. According to a Dallas TV station investigation, "the cost to develop and administer these tests has been about $60 million–$90 million a year". Furthermore, according to Victoria Advocate, Texas, alone, has spent $1.5 billion in the past two decades on the testing machine. This brings up the question, why is so much spent on testing? If so much money is being spent on it, why are students and teachers not seeing the supposed benefits? Standardized testing is now a substantial part of Texas' public education system. Just in recent times have lawmakers noticed the not so positive effects of standardized testing. A lawmaker from central Texas wants to "take the weight off standardized testing in Texas with the Teaching Over Testing Act" (Brandeis). Lawmakers in Texas want to take focus away from testing and put it back into making substantial classrooms. Rep. Jason Isaac, unveiled House Bill 1333, this bill is pushing less emphasis and dependence on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness or STAAR test. Isaac states, "We have these independent school districts, we need to give them the authority and the dollars for them to go ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Argumentative Essay Against School Uniforms Say Yes to School Uniforms: An Argumentative Essay In Favor Of School Uniforms The controversy about students wearing school uniforms is met with approval and criticism. Although school uniforms are becoming more favorable, some students, parents, and administrators oppose the school uniform policy arguing that school uniforms deny students' rights to express themselves. "The percentage of public schools implementing a uniform rule jumped from 13% to 19% between the 2003–04 and the 2011–12 academic years" (Lake). School Uniforms do reduce the choice of clothing that the student can wear, but it does not lessen their education; the purpose of them being there. Students can express their individual style of clothes outside of the classroom. School is a place to learn, and when the choice of clothing is narrowed, the students can direct their full attention to academics. Former Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton advocated for uniforms in school. She said: "Take that (clothing choices) off the table and put the focus on school not what you're wearing." (Clinton). Although school uniforms limit individuality, school uniforms should be required in order to improve social dynamics and the overall health of the school. School uniforms create solidarity and enforcing a uniform policy would make all the students look similar. This addresses peer pressure issues and ceases students trying to "fit in" by wearing stylish or trendy clothes. Statistically, school uniforms have positively impacted schools in the areas of violence and truancy. "According to research 42% of parents and 80% of teachers agreed or strongly agreed that school uniforms promoted school pride and a sense of community. Some people feel that students will feel more connected to their school and classmates. Furthermore, 36% of parents and 52% of teachers agreed and strongly agreed that school uniforms eliminated competition among students" (Statistic Brain Research Institute Online/Direct Response Mail). This positively impacts the school by reducing bullying, and gang–related activities. By establishing a uniform policy, the financial load that parents encounter could be minimized. For parents, August and September is the time they usually ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. The Importance Of Classroom Debate Studies have verified the benefits of using classroom discussion to increase overall student achievement (Li, Murphy, & Firetto, 2014; McKeown, Beck, & Blake, 2009; Murphy et al., 2017; Wolf, Crosson, & Resnick, 2006). The studies stressed the importance of teacher facilitation during discussion and the overall goal of student ownership over discussion. This study investigated Discussion Stem Discourse (DSD) and the impact it had over student ownership of the discussion around literature. When teachers are trained in the most effective discussion techniques and questioning methods, students assume considerable responsibility for the success of the discussion by initiating topics and making unsolicited contributions (Danielson, 2007, p. 82). Fully student–led discussions must be explicitly taught to students through the gradual release model and practiced regularly. The ultimate goal is that students assume considerable responsibility for the success of the discussion, initiate topics, and make unsolicited contributions (Danielson, 2007, p. 82). Based on Resnick's groundbreaking 1999 research, Michaels, O'Connor, Hall, and Resnick (2010) lay the foundation for a successful implementation of student discussion. They defined AT as classroom talk (by both students and teachers) that supports students to attend to the classroom community, to knowledge, and to accepted standards of reasoning (Michaels, O'Connor, & Resnick, 2008). In AT classrooms, students reason, think ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Personal Narrative: Across The Country And Back Again Across the Country and Back Again Have you ever considered dropping your old life, moving someplace far away, and starting over? I've done that, twice in my life. When I was seven or eight, my family decided to move across the country. My mother, who had been born in California, wanted to go back there and live on a farm. My sisters and I were enthusiastic about the idea of living on a farm. My father was into the idea because his mom lived in California, and he was interested in visiting her. I was afraid of flying at the time, so we didn't take a plane. Instead, we decided to drive the whole way. My two younger sisters and I would be riding in the minivan with our mother. I spent grades six and seven attending the charter school, and I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, it was a thirty–minute drive to the school and they didn't have any buses, so my mother had to drive me. • 69. Local Controls Funding Formula And Local Control... At a town hall meeting during the March 11th California Association of African–American Superintendents and Administrators (CAAASA) annual conference, panel members openly spoke about the transformation to the way California would fund education for the nine million public school students it serves. This panel discussion offered various stakeholder viewpoints around the Local Control Funding Formula and the Local Control Accountability Plan. Each member of the panel contributed honestly about LCFF and LCAP as it relates to the states vision of moving forward in trying to close the achievement gap for all students. Paul Richman, California State PTA Executive Director opened the conversation by saying "districts need to focus on three T's: Trust, Transparency, and Tenacity". He emphasized the importance of parent involvement by stating "parent engagement is not a check–off item, it is a long term investment of time, resources, dedication, and capacity". Developing this new funding approach, legislators and state government officials restructured the present funding formula replacing it with a more equitable transparent system known as the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). The primary goal of the LCFF is to eliminate the blatant achievement gaps that exist by creating equity and access through increased educational opportunities for all students. In the same way, Vernon Billy, California association's Board of Directors executive director points out that by shifting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. School Clothes Essay School Clothes I strongly believe that children should come with an instruction manual in different languages, after all, even the most complicated computer system or VCR has a manual in three to four languages, or more. Granted, sometimes we can't understand the instructions, but we have them and sometimes even a toll–free help line. Now some people would say their own parent would be the help–line but not always does that work out. Our own parents advice can be, shall I say, out–dated; for example, many would suggest to us "new" parents to tell our child, "what we say goes," or "stop that crying or I'll give you something to cry about," or "do it because I'm the parent and I said so," not the desired tone for positive interaction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Frankly, the whole exchange of dialogue is exhausting and I have given in more times than I'd like to. I'm sure that the lack of a Parenting Manual is not the reason for school uniform codes, but in my household uniforms certainly would make mornings easier. School uniforms have a multitude of rewards and benefits for both the parent and child and should be implemented in all elementary schools. The rewards and benefits far outweigh any negative connotations that opposing adults have. These benefits include: reduced headache and stress in the morning, reduced expense of clothing, increased focus on academics in the classroom, increased building of team spirit among classmates, and the, for lack of a better word, non–discrimination on the popularity poll. I'll begin with exploring the morning ritual and the reward a uniform has on this process. Critics opposed to uniforms would say the solution to the miserable morning is to lay the clothes out at night, hence avoiding such conflicts. This idea sounds good at the outset; however, it just creates conflicts at bedtime so I haven't seen the advantages or solution to this nighttime–ritual. On the other hand, the uniform idea poses some great alternatives; first the choices are limited, usually to a few shirts, sweaters, or sweatshirts, and one or two pairs of pants or shorts, and ... • 73. The Business Manager/Director of Education Wears Many Hats Education has many faces, one of them being that of the business manager/director. This particular job is a diverse one with various responsibilities. It is the duty and responsibility of a manger or director to ensure that the district run both effectively and efficiently. In doing so, they create a foundation that supports a solid financial operation. I would define this role as being one that maintains strategic financial plans that allows them to manage the administration of personnel functions in the school. They are also responsible for budget modelling, drawing up base budgets, provisional budges as well as final budgets. They monitor salaries and expenditure and advise the district Superintendent. It is also their roles to ensure that all records of expenditures are up to date are keep the Superintendent and principals informed about under and over spending of budgets. Another aspect of their job is making sure that accurate records of personnel files are kept, including absences are maintained and information passed on for payroll services as necessary. They are required to produce job description, person specification and advertisements for vacancies. As a business manager/director one must ensure that all staff are paid on the correct scale and spine point in consultation with the superintendent and to provide appropriate information on pay to staff, the Governing Body and to be the first point of contact for all staff at the school on pay and contract related ... • 77. How Technology Can Make Their Jobs More Effective? Essay With the capabilities and wide–spread availability of technology, it is not uncommon to use electronic machines and computers in our everyday lives. Whether it is a business, government, hospital, or car repair shop, people utilize technology to make their jobs more effective, efficient, and enjoyable. One societal institution where the incorporation of technology seems most beneficial is in our schools, especially in K–12. Through the use of technology, education is made more accessible, versatile, engaging, and easier for both students and teachers. It is no surprise that technology can make information much more accessible. For instance, the simple act of researching the formula for the area of a triangle can be simplified to a search on the Internet. As such, students are able to use sites like YouTube, Wikipedia, Quizlet to gain varyingly different points of view about the subject they are studying. They are also able to return to any point in a video lesson presentation and review it over and over until they either memorize the details or grasp the concepts that it contains or both. In contrast, the traditional brick and mortar school does not allow for such meaningful repetition. If a student does not immediately understand the concept being presented, they are left to either read from their confusing, often unintelligible textbook or to seek out a fellow student for assistance. Even then, these students still might not be able to understand the concepts ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
