Dave Pelzer Research Paper
My Hero: Dave Pelzer Have you ever had a secret that it is so dangerous, it could kill you, but you
were too scared to tell someone? That is the life of Dave Pelzer. Pelzer had a secret just like that,
except if he didn't tell anyone, he would have died. Dave Pelzer is my hero because he conquered
his abuse, he told his story to schools, and he helped with bullying problems. Dave Pelzer grew up
in San Francisco, California (prezi.com) with two alcoholic parents and an abusive mom. His ability
to overcome his abuse, made him an inspiration to many. Dave is the oldest of five.(answers.com)
His dad was a firefighter and an alcoholic. (answers.com)His mother was an alcoholic and abusive.

Pratt And Whitney's Impact On The Military And Commercial...
I will do my research on Pratt and Whitney's significant contribution to the military and commercial
aviation throughout the years. I have always been interested in this great company's ability to learn
develop, evolve and advance their engine manufacturing technological capabilities throughout the
years thus, making them a force to recon with in the engine field. My focus will be towards the
beginning when they started building simple horizontally opposed engines through the radial
engines particularly during nineteen fifties. The wasp and the double wasp capable of producing
over 400 and 1300 shaft horsepower respectively for that time period which was unheard of will be
discussed. I love aviation and have always marveled at the share ... Show more content on

These airplanes were equipped with four of these engines and transported passengers in comfort.
These engines had better performance, reliability and greater fuel efficiency than any other at that
time and won the company the prestigious Collier Trophy award. Everything remained unchanged
until 1966 when again the company introduced the JT9D turbofan fan commercial use. Which
would later be used in the on the iconic and still the best looking airplane in aviation history the
Boeing 747 which opened a completely new era in commercial aviation in 1970.
The P & W Wasp Junior was produced by the thousands. It was a simple, dependable, easy–to–
work–on engine. The accessories were attached to the rear and the constant–speed prop hub to the
front.
Over the years, there have been many different configurations of radial engines, from three–
cylinders to nine cylinders, with the seven and nine cylinder versions preferred. When more power
is required, a second engine is bolted at an angle to allow cooling air to reach the second set of
cylinders. The famous P & W "corn–cob" engine had four banks of seven–cylinder engines attached
to one crankshaft. That's 28 cylinders, and 56 spark plugs to regularly change.
The all–time reigning king of radial engines is built by United Aircraft's Pratt & Whitney Division.
The man behind the engine was Frederick Rentschler who had designed a revolutionary radial

Area 51
The crash that occurred in Roswell and the secret Air Base called Area 51 are important to our
country's history, both of these have led to questions today about aliens and if there is anything else
out there. The government created an open conspiracy bout the "alien crash" in Roswell, they said it
was a weather balloon not aliens; CIA and the government had to cover up the reality of the "alien
crash" which was a secretive mission to spy on the soviet union called Project Mogul; Area 51 is a
secret Air Craft base that the CIA and Air Force use to create U.S spy planes to keep an eye on the
soviet union or now which is countries in the Middle East after terrorist attacks on the U.S; CIA also

Kelly Johnson, who was the leader of the CIA project called Lockheed, was flying over a desert in
Nevada when he noticed a piece of land that looked like it had a strip useful for planes and other
aircraft. When he noticed this piece of land the first idea that ran through his head was that this spot
would be perfect for the all new U–2 spy plane being created by the Air Force. But for that he
needed a spot so remotely classified he chose this because there was about 26 miles around the new
spot for Area 51 to keep all activities private and classified. Area 51 was also located near a nuclear
testing facility so experiments were classified there, so being located near a nuclear test facility
made Area 51 even more secret.
Even though it is widely believed that Area 51 is helping the evolution of alien space craft, which is
not the case. Area 51 is the home of the U–2 spy plane, the A–12, the SR–71 Blackbird, and the
F117–A Stealth Fighter. Since these planes have also never been seen by the public, lots of UFO
reports were sent in around the flight times of the spy planes. Another reason UFOs were called in
was because of height as in this

Use Of Propulsion And The Basic Principle And Theory Of...
Air Breathing Engines Author: Mohsin Rehman Abstract: This paper mentions the history and early
attempts at propulsion and the basic principle and theory of propulsion. Different types of air
breathing engines like turbojet turbofan ramjet scramjet etc. their basic working principle along with
their different working parts and the air planes on which these engines successfully worked are
discussed down the path. Progresses made on historical basis, future planning for the betterment of
aircraft propulsion industries and their major priorities are the highlighted areas of this research
paper. Index terms: horse power, Mach no, oxidizer, stealth technology, thermodynamics. I.
Introduction: In aircraft designing, propulsion system is the basic structure. For an aircraft to leave
the ground and be in air we want a system which can speedily thrust it into air. Before going after
history and detail we have to learn what propulsion basically is. The word is derived from two Latin
words: pro means before or forwards and pellere meaning to drive. Propulsion means to push
forward or drive an object forward [1]. A propulsion system is a machine that generates thrust in
order to push an object forward. Propulsion systems work on newton's third law of action and
reaction. Action is that working fluid is accelerated by the engine and the reaction to this
acceleration produces a force on the engine [1]. The first successful free flights by a man–made

My Experience In My Life
It's hard living alone, in a jungle, and your only resources are what you can find. Being a nomad is
definitely not easy, especially when you live in a place like Nicaragua. I have no friends, no family,
no home, no entertainment, and the only things I have is a compass, a tent, a water bottle, a knife,
and a bag. Almost everything I once had, is now lost. More specifically, taken. Taken by the
almighty ruler, petar. He and his slovakian army killed each and every single person in Nicaragua,
including my family. I'm the only survivor, and if there are other people who are still alive, they're
probably in prison, getting ready to enter the gas chamber. I have never been so sad in my life, and
petar is probably feeling the exact opposite. All the Slovakian wanted was power. I'm only sixteen
years old, and I decided not to continue on in the pool of sadness that I'm in. I took a rope out of my
bag, and tied it to the lowest branch on a humongous rain forest tree. Enough is enough I thought to
myself. I was about to tie the rope around my neck, but then the compass fell out of my pocket. I
realized, that with just a little help, I can win the fight and take back what was mine. I went back to
my tent and gathered all my stuff. I had to travel north west to find the closest non–slovakian
civilization, which was mexico. The task was easier said than done. All I had to do, was follow my
compass so that It would guide all the way to mexico. I walked for hours hoping I would find
something. All I saw was the endless jungle, and a few animals I was able to feast on. It was getting
dark, and I didn't want to spend too much time pitching a tent. Suddenly, I spotted a bright light in
the wilderness. It was a Slovakian camp. I had to go check it out. When I arrived, I realized that it
was abandoned, but still in good shape. It was fully stacked with weapons, and other equipment that
I was planning to keep. I searched around for a bit more, and I found a fully functioning Slovakian
attack helicopter. My new plan is to fly to mexico and bring all the material I found. I got everything
loaded into the helicopter, and turned it on. I quickly remembered how to pilot it, because I used to
go to piloting school.

Military Camouflage Essay
The Lockheed Martin F–22a Raptor fighter jet is the pinnacle of modern stealth technology.
Featuring the absolute latest in radar absorbent covering and aircraft design, this plane not only
defies, but also laughs at enemy attempts to spot it, showing up as a blip the same size as a marble
would on radar. Throughout the ages, it has not been he with the bigger stick who won the war, but
he with the stick that could not be seen. Stealth technology and camouflage have been an integral
part of warfare from when man first waged war, but how have advances from ancient technology led
us to what we have today? Evolving from hiding in a bush to the Japanese Ninja's ability to simply
disappear in the surroundings to modern military camouflage dress ... Show more content on

The Ninja's of ancient times would use whatever they could to camouflage themselves on their
various missions, themselves becoming the F–22's of their time. They utilized color patterns that
would simply blend in with the background, becoming patches in the land the eye simply would not
focus on, and that is the basis of visual camouflage; to fool the enemy into thinking he sees nothing.
The next notable use of camouflage technology came on the bloody battlefields of World War One.
During this conflict, airplanes were first used to recon enemy positions. However, in the words of
W. I. Boucher, "Once in the air or even on the ground, the first military aircraft stood out like sore
thumbs (WWIAviation.com)." When the pilots mission is to scout the enemy position from the air
and return alive with the information, sticking out like a sore thumb is a bad idea, because it draws
fire. To counteract this, military planners and researchers on both sides of the conflict began
researching ways to "make the aircraft disappear into the woodwork (WWIAviation.com)." Britain
was the first with any measurable success. In 1813, researchers at the Royal Aircraft Factory settled
on an at the time unique pigment, one that not only afforded some protection from the sun for the
somewhat fragile fabric, but also had a color less noticeable then the conspicuous pale yellow that
was traditional at the

Titanium Cold War
The Cold War facilitated an arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union that helped
advance space, nuclear and aircraft technology. The need for better aircraft prompted both nations to
search for and develop new and better performing materials. One of the new materials was titanium.
Titanium heled revolutionize airspace technology and was a critical component of some of the most
groundbreaking aircraft ever built. Titanium was discovered in by William Gregor in 1791. Gregor
was a pastor who was fascinated with minerals and kept his own amateur journal where he recorded
his observations. One day when Gregor was doing research a stream in the parish of Mannacan in
Cornwall, England he noticed black metallic sand at the bottom. He ... Show more content on

One of titanium's most important uses is in aerospace technology used by the United States Air
Force. Titanium is very beneficial because it is corrosion resistant, has a high strength to density
ratio, resists fatigue and racking, and is temperature resistant. Because of these properties titanium
has many applications for the Air Force. In aircraft titanium is crucial to engine parts because it can
handle high temperatures and stress. It is used in modern aircraft, such as the F–22 raptor, and was
one of the key components in the record holding SR–71 Blackbird. Because of its low weight and
heat resistance titanium is also used in spacecraft and ballistic, air–to–air and air–to–ground
missiles. Since titanium has roughly the same weight as aluminum and the strength or iron it has
many armor applications. The most noticeable for the US Air Force is in the "bathtub" like shell that
protects the pilot of the A–10. Titanium is invaluable to the US Air Force; titanium and its alloys
have numerous applications in modern aerospace technology, have been used in some of the most
influential and important Air Force missions, and have the potential for future applications that
could once again result in a drastic shift in aerospace

Pros And Cons Of The F-35 Lighting
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... it is the F–35 Lighting. This newly born fighter jet is having some
growing pains and causing the taxpayer's all kinds of headaches. With the United States trying to be
on the cutting edge of technology, the military though up of a plan that could modernize the jet
fighter, by creating an all in one type of plane called the F–35. According to a 2014 article in The
New York Times, "Rough Ride for the F–35" America was going to show case its state–of–the–art
war plane at the international air show, the single–engine F–35 was a no–show. A tough blow to the
America's Military, which under took the "world's most expensive weapons project". This plane was

The saying if it's not broke why fix it, it is the prime example of what the Congress is not doing. If
the congress would see that the military already has capable planes, they could see that dropping
that much money into the F–35 is not the best idea. The A–10 is getting all the pressure from the
development of the F–35 just because the Pentagon wants more of a multi–role aircraft that the F–35
in theory could do. The Air Force came out and said "retiring its fleet of almost 300 Warthogs by
2019 to save an estimated $4.2 billion a year and free up maintainers for the F–35." To free up

money we have spent on the F–35, do we really need it or is it time to cut the jet from the money

problems that the engineers are trying to

BACKGROUND
United States Defense Department continues to develop and acquire systems which provide the
required capabilities to the war–fighters. B–2 stealth bomber has unique wing configuration and
stealth technology. The structure of B–2 is similar to B–35 which was developed in 1940 's by
Northrop. The first B–2 was displayed publicly on November 22, 1988. Its flight was on July 17,
1989. This aircraft got its full operational capability in Dec., 2003. The main contractor which is
responsible for its system integration and design is Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems.
Development of B–2 was started in 1981. Air–Force was given approval for the procurement of 132
operational B–2 aircrafts in 1987, mainly for strategic bombing missions. The purpose of
development of B–2 was changed to regular operations after the demise of the Soviet Union. So, the
order was reduced to 20 operational aircrafts and one test aircraft.

Lockheed : Core Competencies, Key Strengths, And Key...
Milestone 2: Core Competencies, Key Strengths, & Key Weaknesses
Lockheed Martin Corporation is the largest Defense Contractor in the world with $46 billion in net
sales in 2015 (10–K, 2016). Has been the prime contractor in many of the Air Forces biggest
projects in recent years. No other contractor has been awarded a fighter or attack aircraft contract
since 1988.
Strengths
Market Leading Position. Lockheed Martin is the world's leader in combat and logistical aircraft,
anti–missile systems, maritime surveillance and recon systems, space systems, and unmanned
aircraft. In conjunction with providing systems they are also the largest supplier of IT services,
system integration, and training to the United States Government. They have ... Show more content

Advanced Technologies. Lockheed Martin is bringing decades of experience of developing cutting
edge technologically advanced systems to the marketplace. Through their legendary Skunkworks
program, they have developed the F–117 Nighthawk stealth fighter, U–2 Dragon Lady spy plane and
the SR–71 Blackbird. These are craft were operational long before the public even knew of their
existence. The SR–71 developed in the 1960s still holds many speed and altitude records. The F–35
takes this experience and incorporates it. It is a fully stealth aircraft that uses advanced geometrical
shape and electronic methods to remain undetectable. Each F–35 is fully linked to all other aircraft,
being able to "see" what they see. The pilot wears an advanced helmet that allows them to see
"through" the aircraft using 6 infrared cameras mounted around the aircraft, virtually eliminating
any blind spots.
Weaknesses
Cost Overruns. "The F–35 program has become the single most expensive project in the nation's
history. It has been beset with serious technical problems, major schedule delays, cost overruns, and
the F–35's performance capabilities are seen by many as inferior to the nation's potential adversaries'
fighter aircraft, if not inferior to the aircraft it is intended to replace." (Hughes, p. 1, 2015). The F–
35 was to have a "fly away" cost of $89–200 million depending on the variant. But this has soared to
$208–304 million currently. This stems from the

It's eyes trailed behind me, making me aware of the shadow on the ground. A tall, lanky one–armed
figure swaying in the wind. My nose scrunches up at the smell of mildew mixed with an aged sickly
body. I don't know whether or not I should be afraid, I suggest there is a chance this person could
harm me that maybe he could give me some answers. My eyes dart back and forth between the bird
and shadow, I realize that they both have something in common. For some reason, they both
appeared out of nowhere. The blackbird flies off, leaving me alone with the figure. Why hasn't it
spoken to me yet, or moved in front of me? The worst possible thing that could happen, I guess,
would be that it kills me making me actually die so, I turn my head around slowly– "WATCH
OUT!" a voice yells just as the figure takes a hold of my shoulders.
Sharp nails dig in my shoulder blades as I whip my head around coming face to face with the most
unusual looking creature ever. It's eyes are glossy orbs almost transparent while the rest of it looks
just like the blackbird only worst. Half of its body resembles a healthy human the other more of a
monster. With it's one arm still gripping my shoulder hanging on for dear life, it begins to lower its
mouth to my ear. Letting out a shaky breath, my whole body breaks out in chills while it whispers
"Don't let––"Zipp! An arrow flies by hitting the creature square in the head, leaving it to drop and

Psychological Effects Of The Cold War
The Cold War began the use of space for war advantages. At the end of World War II, the dropping
of the two atomic bombs changed the way war was fought forever. The Cold War brought the need
for gathering intelligence on enemy countries driving the Cold War into the space race developing
artificial intelligence, satellites, which would be used for military use including spying and
reconnaissance. Many government agencies were formed and created the Corona Satellite having
the most effect on the Cold War intelligence gathering. Without the use of satellites during the Cold
War and agencies formed for foreign surveillance, the satellites used daily for television, GPS,
photography, reconnaissance, and space exploration would not exist. Satellites ... Show more

The United States took initiative and started surveillance on the Soviets by using U–2 spy planes.
After the incident of Gary Powers being killed when flying, the push for spying in space would
allow for intelligence on other countries above Earth's atmosphere and unnoticeable. Many
government agencies developed the Corona satellite having a major impact on the Cold War. This
imagery allowed for the ability to verify missiles and weapons which gave the United States
confidence and a strategy when fighting or signing treaties. This satellite allowed for the collapsing
of the Berlin Wall and ending the war against Communism. Today Satellites are launched and used
from many countries all across the world. These satellites allow for television, communication,
weather, GPS navigation, spying, space exploration, and so much more. The Corona Satellite

the innovation within the aviation world. Many of their planes have been used to break records or
have broken records themselves. They have also built planes that were necessary in a few wars. The
Lockheed Martin company was started in 1995 but originally it consisted of two separate
companies. These companies were the Glen L. Martin Company and the Lockheed Aircraft

Towards the end of the War the airplane becomes a practical device of war being able to carry
weapons. Anthony Fokker and Louis Bleriot create the most successful of early modern biplanes
known as the D–VII and D–VIII. Biplanes are eventually taken over by the monoplane, or one wing.
This new design allowed for faster flight and better visibility for the pilot. Air–cooled engines lead
the way for commercial aircraft, and Boeing introduces the first modern airliner the 247. Airplanes
are effected the greatest by supply and demand of war. New styles of war begun to emerge so did
new and improved types of aircraft. The population of the U.S. also begun to grow which leads to
the modern most sophisticated commercial airliner the 777. Most aircraft improvements are found in
the military and intelligence field. The most high tech aircraft known today for such things as spying
are the SR–71 Blackbird, and the U–2 Spy plane. The most complicated and best aircraft
performance is still held by the space shuttle and probably always will be. The last 200 years have
seen incredible changes in aircraft from the man with wings to heavier than air flying machines that
can travel at supersonic speeds. Lift Every single part of an aircraft is incredibly important, without
a piece of the airplane it just wouldn't fly. If there had to be a most important part of the aircraft, it

America During The Cold War
Throughout World War II, the perception of fear prompted Allied forces to emerge victorious from
the bloody battlefields. Subsequently, Europe faced the struggles of political and economic
fragmentation, while the remaining world–powers were the United States of America and the Union
of Soviet Socialist Republics. Adhering to two highly contrasting ideologies, capitalism and
communism, fear for the other's supremacy initiated "war" once again.
The Cold War, of 1945 to 1991, was a lengthy era of diplomatic tension involving the "rapid build–
up of political, economic, and military strength in the free world." This rivalry to become the
predominant global–power led to numerous discoveries through aerial, space, and technological
exploration. Events, including those of espionage, the Arms Race, and the Space Race, led to
American–Soviet encounters and exchanges, contributing to major advancements in the fields of
both science and technology.

in Eastern Europe, fearful of a Soviet scheme to take command through the influence of
communism. This mass hysteria, leading to enduring actions committed by the American society

How To Write An Essay On Area 51
Does anyone really know what goes on at Area 51? One of the most well–known military sites in
America has an immense amount of secrets. Area 51 began with testing varieties of special aircrafts.
There has been speculations of Area 51 hiding information of the Roswell accident in New Mexico.
Some people believe they capture and experiment on extraterrestrials and their aircrafts. The top
secret military facility known as Area 51 tests special aircrafts; however, people connect the Roswell
UFO crash to this site. Because of the extensive secrecy, many conspiracies have grown out of Area
51. Area 51 is in Nevada 83 miles northwest of Las Vegas on the dry bed of Groom Lake. It's almost
impossible to get close to it because of how secretive and protective it is. Around the facility, guards
keep a lookout for unwanted visitors and motion detectors are put around the site to tell employees

Introduction Of Stealth Technology : Technology
INTRODUCTION OF STEALTH TECHNOLOGY:
Most of the common people would be unaware of this technology and they would first ask what is
this technology? Stealth technology is that technology which covers the range of technology which
is used by defence men, air craft 's, missiles, satellites so that they become invisible to the radar ,
infrared, solar and other detection methods.
It is combination of technologies that aims to reduce the distances at which a vehicle or a person can
be detected especially radar cross section reduction.
RADAR CROSS SECTION (RCS) REDUCTION– Various methods have been tried to minimize
radar detection since the invention of radar. Due to the increased awareness of stealth vehicles and
the technologies, development of means to detect stealth vehicles was provided. However
development of low RCS is the desire of most of the countries because they are advantageous in
detection range deduction.
HISTORY OF STEALTH TECHNOLOGY:
Like every single technology stealth technology have also the back ground or the history. The
development of stealth technology started in 1958, in United States who were trying to prevent the
radar detection of its U–2 spy planes from the soviet union during the cold war .However that was
unsuccessful .This made the designers to develop a particular shape for the planes that will reduce
the detection of planes. The 1st stealth submarines were the U–boat U–480.The HORTEN HO229

I Had Planned A Best Friend Trip
In 2023 Lexie and I had planned a best friend trip to Turkey we planned to stay for a week. We
decided to go to Turkey because that 's where Lexie is from and she wanted to show me around.
This was like a dream come true for her. We started planning a year early so we can get everything
in order. The first thing we did was save our money and put in our best friend saving account. We
saved a total of $10,000, we both had great paying jobs. The next thing we had to on our list was
book flights because we were not driving because a car can't cross water. That would be crazy for us
to drive. In October we had booked our flight to Turkey for June 25, my birthday. The cost for a
round trip first class for two adults 1010.20 dollars. The flight only lasted for about one hour with no
stops being made. We took a private flight in the world 's fastest plane, Lockheed YF–12. Now our
bank account is 8989.80 dollars. Keep in mind we plan on spending all the money in Turkey. The
next thing that we had to get was a passport so that we could go. We went to get our passports which
costed 55 dollars for each of us. Our new price was 8879.80 dollars. I felt like our bank account was
just draining down fast. The next thing we had to get with our money was clothes, personal needs,
and suitcases. I had to get new clothes because my mom always told me before you go anywhere
make sure you look good because you might meet your husband. I packed a total of 21 outfits
because like all girls, I

Operation Ivory Coast Of The Vietnam War
The Son Tay Raid, also known as Operation Ivory Coast, was a United States combined joint
military forces mission conducted in the Vietnam War to rescue prisoners of war. The Son Tay Raid
was a mission involving the President of the United States and his highest advisors, multiple armed
forces aviation and special operations assets, mission details including intentionally crashing a
helicopter, and the highest level of secrecy. The Son Tay Raid, since completion of the mission,
regarded as being one of the most successful and impactful single missions of the Vietnam War. The
Son Tay Raid is a failure due to the absence of prisoners of war at the time of the raid. While the
Son Tay Raid did not succeed in its primary mission, the raid was successful in its integration of
combined joint aviation assets, special operations ground soldiers, and tactical innovation. With
intelligence gathered by the Defense Military Intelligence department "in May 1970 based on
imagery" (Amidon, 2005) Operation Ivory Coast was conceived. The imagery showed strong
potential for American prisoners of war held in North Vietnam near Hanoi. The mission was to raid
a prisoner of war camp near the Son Tay Citadel and rescue approximately 70 personnel held
captive by the North Vietnamese deep in North Vietnamese territory. A mission at this scale will be
the first of its kind. The mission was to include crash landing a HH–3H into the main compound

contributions to militarized aircraft changed the way we fly to the present day. His success at a
younger age made it known that he strived for nothing less than perfection. This motive helped him
to not only fit in, but to be a true leader at Skunk Works. His innovation for stealth reconnaissance
aircraft lead him to create the fastest high altitude planes the military has every seen. The ingenuity
and genius that he had was the pinnacle of his career and what made him change the face of the

This plane is the fastest air breathing manned aircraft since 1976. The plane can fly up to 80,000 feet
high and travel at mach 6. The SR–71 was on a recon flight over the DMZ when North Korea fired a
surface to air missile at it. The pilot had to perform evasive maneuvers which was basically just to
speed up and outrun the missile. The aircraft was also commonly used by NASA for experiments on
our atmosphere and the Earth in general seeing how it flew at such a high flight level. The pilots
who flew the spacecraft, operated at such a high altitude that they had to wear modified versions of
the space suit, seeing how they were cruising at 80,000 feet high. The SR–71 holds six incredible
records, but its one of its most notable ones was its final flight from Los Angeles to Washington

"Keep it simple, stupid", was a phrase that Kelly Johnson followed. It means that things, such as
military systems or equipment, work better if kept things nice and simple. How Clarence "Kelly"
Johnson changed aeronautics, he had a part in designing things such as the F–117 Stealth Fighter
and the SR–71 Blackbird, as well as U–2 spy plane, and the famed Model 10 Electra, the plane that
Amelia Earhart flew on her attempted flight around the world. Kelly Johnson was born in a small

The SR-71 Blackbird
The year was 1946. World War 2 had ended only months before, and already the stage was set for
another global conflict. The United States and the Soviet Union, formerly allies in the war against
Hitler's Third Reich, were now engaged in a standoff over what system of beliefs would prevail over
the slowly recovering nations of Europe. The Soviet Union wasted no time in forming an Eastern
Bloc, a group of satellite nations controlled by puppet governments, whose primary purpose was to
provide a buffer of sorts between Russian soil and the other nations of Europe, sealing their new
territory behind tightly controlled borders that came to be called "The Iron Curtain". The USSR had

At the start of the Cold War, bomber and fighter aircraft fitted with cameras were sufficient for this
role, but as the Soviet's air defenses became increasingly sophisticated, and threats to aircraft began
to mount, it became obvious that something else was needed. By the start of the 1950's, the US Air
Force needed something new. One of the designs that was submitted, though rejected by the Air
Force, was funded by the Central Intelligence Agency under the codename AQUATONE. The
aircraft, which became well known in the later years of the Cold War as the U–2, was designed,
built, and flown in the top secret world of "Black" aircraft, completely unknown by the public for
nearly ten years. It's primary defense was the ability to fly at up to 70,000 feet above sea level, safe
above the reach of Soviet defenses in the late 50's. The U–2 was used in operations over the Eastern
Bloc, hot–spots in Asia and the Middle East, even over China, observing everything from submarine
bases to farming. The first time it was used to overfly the Soviet Union itself, however, the aircraft
was downed by the blast effect of a Russian SA–2 Surface to Air missile. In the attempt the Soviets
destroyed two of their own aircraft, but the damage was done; the U–2 was no longer secret, it's

The SR–71 was designed totally in secret. With a top speed of over Mach 3 (three times the speed of
sound, more than 2,200 miles an hour) it was, and remains, the fastest aircraft ever built. It went into
service in the mid–sixties and was only recently retired. During that entire time no SR–71 was ever
caught and shot down. Some speculate that the
"Black Bird's" successor is in test at Groom Lake right now.
Over that last decade Area 51 has also come to be associated with UFO's. There were stories that a
flying saucer, that allegedly crashed at Roswell, New Mexico, had been brought to the Nellis

Scram Jet Essay
The SCRAMJET, simply abbreviated from Supersonic Combustion Ramjet, is the latest evolution of
the jet engine family. NASA made the news with each test of the X–43A scramjet craft, so I set
about to discover why this type of jet engine should garner so much scientific attention. Turbojet
The most basic jet engine is the turbojet. As soon as the air enters the front of the engine, the blades
of the compressor, compresses the air before funneling it into the combustion chamber. During the
compression, not only is the density of the air increased by compressing it in a confined chamber,
but the temperature of the air also increases as the air molecules of squeezed closer together. The
resulting air that emerges into the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Turboprop The turboprop (turbo propeller) engine combines the simple propeller engine with that of
the turbojet. In this case, in addition to driving the compressor, the turbine also drives a propeller.
The propeller provides thrust like a normal propeller (the wedge shape of the blades pushes the air
back), in addition to the thrust produced by the turbojet part of the engine. Ramjet The ramjet engine
is a much simpler construction than either the propeller or turbojet engine. Unlike these the other
engines that require moving parts (propeller, compressor, turbine, shaft, etc), the ramjet consists
basically of a tube that scoops the air into the combustion chamber where it is mixed with fuel and
ignited, and exhausts the hot gasses through the necked down exhaust nozzle. Because of the high
speeds of operation, instead of compressing the air, the chamber of the ramjet actually expands and
thereby slows the air to subsonic speeds for the combustion process. The force of the incoming air
forces the combustion to be kept behind the inlet. Because of this fact, the engine cannot be operated
at subsonic velocities (Velocities below Mach 1 – One time the speed of sound or roughly 740 mph
at standard temperature and pressure). Hence another engine has to accelerate the plane to the point
where the ramjet can function. On the other hand, because of its simplistic construction, the ramjet
engine can

The Importance Of Reducing The Intensity Of A Sonic Boom
Shawn Merrick–Miller Ryan Cilsick Science Research 12/20/16
The importance of reducing the intensity of a sonic boom is essential to making supersonic flight a
possibility for passenger aircraft over land. Currently, supersonic flight over land in the US is
prohibited by the FAA due to the annoyance associated with the sonicboom to people (observers) on
the ground. The advancement of sonic boom reduction could lead to the advancement in the way we
travel around the world with amazing speeds. Speeds up to mach 3.3 at 88,000ft (That 's nearly 17
miles!) can be achieved in an SR–71 Blackbird, that keep in mind, it was made and introduced in
1966. 50 years later, we have the ability to transport people vast distances and at high speeds safely,
but we don't. Why not? Getting up to speed is not the issue in this circumstance, the issue is doing it
quietly. It can be said that this problem can be eliminated by making a suborbital transport aircraft,
which could be very beneficial, but will still create a sonic boom, and will still, annoy people. At a
higher price. Supersonic flight was pioneered by the air force in 1947, when Chuck Yeager became
the first man to break the sound barrier. Shortly after, supersonic aircraft research was started.
"Supersonic cruising aircraft did not begin until the mid–1950 's. Research on such aircraft had its
origins in the United States in the work which was begun in 1954 or 1955 in support of the Air

BACKGROUND PAPER
THE LONGEST SERVING AIRCRAFT IN AIR FORCE HISTORY
KC–135 STRATOTANKER
1. The focus of my background paper is the KC–135 "Stratotanker" or "Tanker" and how this
aircraft has supplied fuel since the 1950s, making it the longest–serving aircraft in Air Force history.
My first point explains the diversity of air mobility missions possible with the KC–135, and the
continuous upgrades performed on the aircraft to keep up with the most modern aircraft worldwide.
My second point highlights the role of the KC–135 in the Cold War and conflict in Vietnam. And to
conclude, I will share the Air Force's plans to gradually phase out the KC–135 over the next 20–30
years with Boeing's KC–46 "Pegasus".
2. The KC–135 is capable of airlifting "up to 83,000 pounds of cargo and 58 passengers" and
transporting patients during aeromedical evacuations, but the main mission is in–flight refueling.
Since its inception, the KC–135 has been modified ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 2007, the Air Force decided its number one acquisition priority was to replace the KC–135. After
a long drawn out battle, in 2011, Boeing was awarded the contract to "build 179 KC–46 tankers for
the Air Force by 2027". However, "414 [Tankers] are still flying, including 180 in Guard," so the
replacement process will be slow, with approximately 12 new KC–46 Pegasus per year. Therefore,
the Air Force expect another 20–30 years of service before the KC–135 "E and R models meet their
lifetime flying hour limits of 36,000 and 39,000 hours." Future requirements for aerial refueling
might include refueling unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which neither the KC–135 nor the KC–
46 can do.
5. In summary, throughout the 60 years of service in the Air Force, the KC–135 has flown in every
War since the conflict in Vietnam and it holds the record as the longest–serving aircraft in Air Force
history. Moreover, the KC–135 will continue to serve as the source of fuel for air mobility
operations for the next 20–30 years.

creation of stealth aircrafts. Ufo and the sightings of Ufos has been talked about for a long time. But
with those conversations Area 51 is usually in the middle of it. It's rumored that the government
hides ufo items in Area 51. But Ufo or "unidentified flying object", have been denied by the
government for years. But the "Pentagon has officially confirmed that there was, in fact, a $22
million government program to collect and analyze "anomalous aerospace threats" – government–
speak for UFOs"(Jr., Cleve R. Wootson). In 1947 a flying saucer crashed into earth. The wreckage
and bodies were taken to Area 51 to be tested and experimented on. The wreckage occurred just
outside of Roswell New Mexico. Witch is less than two hours away from Area 51 by airplane. The
government tried covering it up by saying, "Nearly 50 years after the story of the mysterious debris

It might be crazy to think about that the moon landing was fake. The moon landing is one of the
biggest things that ever occured for mankind. The moon landing was something that most people
just believe and never questions. But it possibly could have been staged or fake. "With the photos
and videos of the Apollo missions only available through NASA, there's no independent verification
that the lunar landings were anything but a hoax"(conspiracy theories). With that information it
raises suspicion was the first apollo mission staged at Area 51. The film of Aldrin holding the flag

  • 1. Dave Pelzer Research Paper My Hero: Dave Pelzer Have you ever had a secret that it is so dangerous, it could kill you, but you were too scared to tell someone? That is the life of Dave Pelzer. Pelzer had a secret just like that, except if he didn't tell anyone, he would have died. Dave Pelzer is my hero because he conquered his abuse, he told his story to schools, and he helped with bullying problems. Dave Pelzer grew up in San Francisco, California (prezi.com) with two alcoholic parents and an abusive mom. His ability to overcome his abuse, made him an inspiration to many. Dave is the oldest of five.(answers.com) His dad was a firefighter and an alcoholic. (answers.com)His mother was an alcoholic and abusive. Pelzer nearly died several times by his mother. • 5. Pratt And Whitney's Impact On The Military And Commercial... I will do my research on Pratt and Whitney's significant contribution to the military and commercial aviation throughout the years. I have always been interested in this great company's ability to learn develop, evolve and advance their engine manufacturing technological capabilities throughout the years thus, making them a force to recon with in the engine field. My focus will be towards the beginning when they started building simple horizontally opposed engines through the radial engines particularly during nineteen fifties. The wasp and the double wasp capable of producing over 400 and 1300 shaft horsepower respectively for that time period which was unheard of will be discussed. I love aviation and have always marveled at the share ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These airplanes were equipped with four of these engines and transported passengers in comfort. These engines had better performance, reliability and greater fuel efficiency than any other at that time and won the company the prestigious Collier Trophy award. Everything remained unchanged until 1966 when again the company introduced the JT9D turbofan fan commercial use. Which would later be used in the on the iconic and still the best looking airplane in aviation history the Boeing 747 which opened a completely new era in commercial aviation in 1970. The P & W Wasp Junior was produced by the thousands. It was a simple, dependable, easy–to– work–on engine. The accessories were attached to the rear and the constant–speed prop hub to the front. Over the years, there have been many different configurations of radial engines, from three– cylinders to nine cylinders, with the seven and nine cylinder versions preferred. When more power is required, a second engine is bolted at an angle to allow cooling air to reach the second set of cylinders. The famous P & W "corn–cob" engine had four banks of seven–cylinder engines attached to one crankshaft. That's 28 cylinders, and 56 spark plugs to regularly change. The all–time reigning king of radial engines is built by United Aircraft's Pratt & Whitney Division. The man behind the engine was Frederick Rentschler who had designed a revolutionary radial ... Area 51 The crash that occurred in Roswell and the secret Air Base called Area 51 are important to our country's history, both of these have led to questions today about aliens and if there is anything else out there. The government created an open conspiracy bout the "alien crash" in Roswell, they said it was a weather balloon not aliens; CIA and the government had to cover up the reality of the "alien crash" which was a secretive mission to spy on the soviet union called Project Mogul; Area 51 is a secret Air Craft base that the CIA and Air Force use to create U.S spy planes to keep an eye on the soviet union or now which is countries in the Middle East after terrorist attacks on the U.S; CIA also uses this base to advance military science and technology faster and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kelly Johnson, who was the leader of the CIA project called Lockheed, was flying over a desert in Nevada when he noticed a piece of land that looked like it had a strip useful for planes and other aircraft. When he noticed this piece of land the first idea that ran through his head was that this spot would be perfect for the all new U–2 spy plane being created by the Air Force. But for that he needed a spot so remotely classified he chose this because there was about 26 miles around the new spot for Area 51 to keep all activities private and classified. Area 51 was also located near a nuclear testing facility so experiments were classified there, so being located near a nuclear test facility made Area 51 even more secret. Even though it is widely believed that Area 51 is helping the evolution of alien space craft, which is not the case. Area 51 is the home of the U–2 spy plane, the A–12, the SR–71 Blackbird, and the F117–A Stealth Fighter. Since these planes have also never been seen by the public, lots of UFO reports were sent in around the flight times of the spy planes. • 13. Use Of Propulsion And The Basic Principle And Theory Of... Air Breathing Engines Author: Mohsin Rehman Abstract: This paper mentions the history and early attempts at propulsion and the basic principle and theory of propulsion. Different types of air breathing engines like turbojet turbofan ramjet scramjet etc. their basic working principle along with their different working parts and the air planes on which these engines successfully worked are discussed down the path. Progresses made on historical basis, future planning for the betterment of aircraft propulsion industries and their major priorities are the highlighted areas of this research paper. Index terms: horse power, Mach no, oxidizer, stealth technology, thermodynamics. I. Introduction: In aircraft designing, propulsion system is the basic structure. For an aircraft to leave the ground and be in air we want a system which can speedily thrust it into air. Before going after history and detail we have to learn what propulsion basically is. The word is derived from two Latin words: pro means before or forwards and pellere meaning to drive. Propulsion means to push forward or drive an object forward [1]. A propulsion system is a machine that generates thrust in order to push an object forward. Propulsion systems work on newton's third law of action and reaction. Action is that working fluid is accelerated by the engine and the reaction to this acceleration produces a force on the engine [1]. The first successful free flights by a man–made ... • 17. My Experience In My Life It's hard living alone, in a jungle, and your only resources are what you can find. Being a nomad is definitely not easy, especially when you live in a place like Nicaragua. I have no friends, no family, no home, no entertainment, and the only things I have is a compass, a tent, a water bottle, a knife, and a bag. Almost everything I once had, is now lost. More specifically, taken. Taken by the almighty ruler, petar. He and his slovakian army killed each and every single person in Nicaragua, including my family. I'm the only survivor, and if there are other people who are still alive, they're probably in prison, getting ready to enter the gas chamber. I have never been so sad in my life, and petar is probably feeling the exact opposite. All the Slovakian wanted was power. I'm only sixteen years old, and I decided not to continue on in the pool of sadness that I'm in. I took a rope out of my bag, and tied it to the lowest branch on a humongous rain forest tree. Enough is enough I thought to myself. I was about to tie the rope around my neck, but then the compass fell out of my pocket. I realized, that with just a little help, I can win the fight and take back what was mine. I went back to my tent and gathered all my stuff. I had to travel north west to find the closest non–slovakian civilization, which was mexico. The task was easier said than done. All I had to do, was follow my compass so that It would guide all the way to mexico. I walked for hours hoping I would find something. All I saw was the endless jungle, and a few animals I was able to feast on. It was getting dark, and I didn't want to spend too much time pitching a tent. Suddenly, I spotted a bright light in the wilderness. It was a Slovakian camp. I had to go check it out. When I arrived, I realized that it was abandoned, but still in good shape. It was fully stacked with weapons, and other equipment that I was planning to keep. I searched around for a bit more, and I found a fully functioning Slovakian attack helicopter. My new plan is to fly to mexico and bring all the material I found. I got everything loaded into the helicopter, and turned it on. I quickly remembered how to pilot it, because I used to go to piloting school. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Military Camouflage Essay The Lockheed Martin F–22a Raptor fighter jet is the pinnacle of modern stealth technology. Featuring the absolute latest in radar absorbent covering and aircraft design, this plane not only defies, but also laughs at enemy attempts to spot it, showing up as a blip the same size as a marble would on radar. Throughout the ages, it has not been he with the bigger stick who won the war, but he with the stick that could not be seen. Stealth technology and camouflage have been an integral part of warfare from when man first waged war, but how have advances from ancient technology led us to what we have today? Evolving from hiding in a bush to the Japanese Ninja's ability to simply disappear in the surroundings to modern military camouflage dress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Ninja's of ancient times would use whatever they could to camouflage themselves on their various missions, themselves becoming the F–22's of their time. They utilized color patterns that would simply blend in with the background, becoming patches in the land the eye simply would not focus on, and that is the basis of visual camouflage; to fool the enemy into thinking he sees nothing. The next notable use of camouflage technology came on the bloody battlefields of World War One. During this conflict, airplanes were first used to recon enemy positions. However, in the words of W. I. Boucher, "Once in the air or even on the ground, the first military aircraft stood out like sore thumbs (WWIAviation.com)." When the pilots mission is to scout the enemy position from the air and return alive with the information, sticking out like a sore thumb is a bad idea, because it draws fire. To counteract this, military planners and researchers on both sides of the conflict began researching ways to "make the aircraft disappear into the woodwork (WWIAviation.com)." Britain was the first with any measurable success. In 1813, researchers at the Royal Aircraft Factory settled on an at the time unique pigment, one that not only afforded some protection from the sun for the somewhat fragile fabric, but also had a color less noticeable then the conspicuous pale yellow that was traditional at the ... • 25. Titanium Cold War The Cold War facilitated an arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union that helped advance space, nuclear and aircraft technology. The need for better aircraft prompted both nations to search for and develop new and better performing materials. One of the new materials was titanium. Titanium heled revolutionize airspace technology and was a critical component of some of the most groundbreaking aircraft ever built. Titanium was discovered in by William Gregor in 1791. Gregor was a pastor who was fascinated with minerals and kept his own amateur journal where he recorded his observations. One day when Gregor was doing research a stream in the parish of Mannacan in Cornwall, England he noticed black metallic sand at the bottom. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of titanium's most important uses is in aerospace technology used by the United States Air Force. Titanium is very beneficial because it is corrosion resistant, has a high strength to density ratio, resists fatigue and racking, and is temperature resistant. Because of these properties titanium has many applications for the Air Force. In aircraft titanium is crucial to engine parts because it can handle high temperatures and stress. It is used in modern aircraft, such as the F–22 raptor, and was one of the key components in the record holding SR–71 Blackbird. Because of its low weight and heat resistance titanium is also used in spacecraft and ballistic, air–to–air and air–to–ground missiles. Since titanium has roughly the same weight as aluminum and the strength or iron it has many armor applications. The most noticeable for the US Air Force is in the "bathtub" like shell that protects the pilot of the A–10. Titanium is invaluable to the US Air Force; titanium and its alloys have numerous applications in modern aerospace technology, have been used in some of the most influential and important Air Force missions, and have the potential for future applications that could once again result in a drastic shift in aerospace ... This newly born fighter jet is having some growing pains and causing the taxpayer's all kinds of headaches. With the United States trying to be on the cutting edge of technology, the military though up of a plan that could modernize the jet fighter, by creating an all in one type of plane called the F–35. According to a 2014 article in The New York Times, "Rough Ride for the F–35" America was going to show case its state–of–the–art war plane at the international air show, the single–engine F–35 was a no–show. The A–10 is getting all the pressure from the development of the F–35 just because the Pentagon wants more of a multi–role aircraft that the F–35 in theory could do. The Air Force came out and said "retiring its fleet of almost 300 Warthogs by 2019 to save an estimated $4.2 billion a year and free up maintainers for the F–35." To free up maintainer for the F–35 if that doesn't say problem child than I don't know what is. Through their legendary Skunkworks program, they have developed the F–117 Nighthawk stealth fighter, U–2 Dragon Lady spy plane and the SR–71 Blackbird. These are craft were operational long before the public even knew of their existence. The SR–71 developed in the 1960s still holds many speed and altitude records. The F–35 takes this experience and incorporates it. It is a fully stealth aircraft that uses advanced geometrical shape and electronic methods to remain undetectable. Each F–35 is fully linked to all other aircraft, being able to "see" what they see. The pilot wears an advanced helmet that allows them to see "through" the aircraft using 6 infrared cameras mounted around the aircraft, virtually eliminating any blind spots. Weaknesses Cost Overruns. "The F–35 program has become the single most expensive project in the nation's history. It has been beset with serious technical problems, major schedule delays, cost overruns, and the F–35's performance capabilities are seen by many as inferior to the nation's potential adversaries' fighter aircraft, if not inferior to the aircraft it is intended to replace." (Hughes, p. 1, 2015). The F– 35 was to have a "fly away" cost of $89–200 million depending on the variant. But this has soared to $208–304 million currently. This stems from the ... • 81. Introduction Of Stealth Technology : Technology INTRODUCTION OF STEALTH TECHNOLOGY: Most of the common people would be unaware of this technology and they would first ask what is this technology? Stealth technology is that technology which covers the range of technology which is used by defence men, air craft 's, missiles, satellites so that they become invisible to the radar , infrared, solar and other detection methods. It is combination of technologies that aims to reduce the distances at which a vehicle or a person can be detected especially radar cross section reduction. RADAR CROSS SECTION (RCS) REDUCTION– Various methods have been tried to minimize radar detection since the invention of radar. Due to the increased awareness of stealth vehicles and the technologies, development of means to detect stealth vehicles was provided. However development of low RCS is the desire of most of the countries because they are advantageous in detection range deduction. HISTORY OF STEALTH TECHNOLOGY: Like every single technology stealth technology have also the back ground or the history. The development of stealth technology started in 1958, in United States who were trying to prevent the radar detection of its U–2 spy planes from the soviet union during the cold war .However that was unsuccessful .This made the designers to develop a particular shape for the planes that will reduce the detection of planes. We decided to go to Turkey because that 's where Lexie is from and she wanted to show me around. This was like a dream come true for her. We started planning a year early so we can get everything in order. The first thing we did was save our money and put in our best friend saving account. We saved a total of $10,000, we both had great paying jobs. The next thing we had to on our list was book flights because we were not driving because a car can't cross water. That would be crazy for us to drive. In October we had booked our flight to Turkey for June 25, my birthday. The cost for a round trip first class for two adults 1010.20 dollars. The flight only lasted for about one hour with no stops being made. We took a private flight in the world 's fastest plane, Lockheed YF–12. Now our bank account is 8989.80 dollars. Keep in mind we plan on spending all the money in Turkey. The next thing that we had to get was a passport so that we could go. We went to get our passports which costed 55 dollars for each of us. Our new price was 8879.80 dollars. I felt like our bank account was just draining down fast. The next thing we had to get with our money was clothes, personal needs, and suitcases. • 93. Operation Ivory Coast Of The Vietnam War The Son Tay Raid, also known as Operation Ivory Coast, was a United States combined joint military forces mission conducted in the Vietnam War to rescue prisoners of war. The Son Tay Raid was a mission involving the President of the United States and his highest advisors, multiple armed forces aviation and special operations assets, mission details including intentionally crashing a helicopter, and the highest level of secrecy. The Son Tay Raid, since completion of the mission, regarded as being one of the most successful and impactful single missions of the Vietnam War. The Son Tay Raid is a failure due to the absence of prisoners of war at the time of the raid. While the Son Tay Raid did not succeed in its primary mission, the raid was successful in its integration of combined joint aviation assets, special operations ground soldiers, and tactical innovation. With intelligence gathered by the Defense Military Intelligence department "in May 1970 based on imagery" (Amidon, 2005) Operation Ivory Coast was conceived. The imagery showed strong potential for American prisoners of war held in North Vietnam near Hanoi. The mission was to raid a prisoner of war camp near the Son Tay Citadel and rescue approximately 70 personnel held captive by the North Vietnamese deep in North Vietnamese territory. A mission at this scale will be the first of its kind. The mission was to include crash landing a HH–3H into the main compound holding prisoners of war. The mission was ... • 97. Clarence Johnson Essay Kelly "Clarence" Johnson is one of the greatest aeronautical and systems engineer to ever live. His contributions to militarized aircraft changed the way we fly to the present day. His success at a younger age made it known that he strived for nothing less than perfection. This motive helped him to not only fit in, but to be a true leader at Skunk Works. His innovation for stealth reconnaissance aircraft lead him to create the fastest high altitude planes the military has every seen. The ingenuity and genius that he had was the pinnacle of his career and what made him change the face of the flight game. This plane is the fastest air breathing manned aircraft since 1976. The plane can fly up to 80,000 feet high and travel at mach 6. The SR–71 was on a recon flight over the DMZ when North Korea fired a surface to air missile at it. The pilot had to perform evasive maneuvers which was basically just to speed up and outrun the missile. The aircraft was also commonly used by NASA for experiments on our atmosphere and the Earth in general seeing how it flew at such a high flight level. The pilots who flew the spacecraft, operated at such a high altitude that they had to wear modified versions of the space suit, seeing how they were cruising at 80,000 feet high. The SR–71 holds six incredible records, but its one of its most notable ones was its final flight from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. in which the plane achieved a time record of just 1 hour, 4 minutes and 20 seconds. It was averaging 2,124 miles per hour breaking the the previous speed record of around 1900 miles per hour. • 101. Kelly Johnson Research Paper "Keep it simple, stupid", was a phrase that Kelly Johnson followed. It means that things, such as military systems or equipment, work better if kept things nice and simple. How Clarence "Kelly" Johnson changed aeronautics, he had a part in designing things such as the F–117 Stealth Fighter and the SR–71 Blackbird, as well as U–2 spy plane, and the famed Model 10 Electra, the plane that Amelia Earhart flew on her attempted flight around the world. Kelly Johnson was born in a small town in Michigan called Ishpeming, born of parents of Swedish descent on February 27, 1910. He won his first airplane design prize at age 13, and he went to Mott Community college, and then to University of Michigan, to receive a Bachelor and Master's Degree, How he ended up with the name Kelly, it was said that he broke a kids leg in grade school after being made fun of in grade school, thus the kids there decided to take the name of a popular song and attach it to him. ... There, Kelly Johnson began working his way up, while working on the Model 10 Electra, eventually creating the perfect design. Actually, the name of Lockheed's, now Lockheed Martin's secret development sector, Skunk Works, came from one of the engineers under Kelly Johnson. As there was a vile smelling plastic factory nearby the Skunk Works, the engineer, Irv Culver, began answering the phone with "Skonk Works!", but when the name got leaked, they changed the name in order to not be possibly sued by a comic strip ... • 113. The SR-71 Blackbird The year was 1946. World War 2 had ended only months before, and already the stage was set for another global conflict. The United States and the Soviet Union, formerly allies in the war against Hitler's Third Reich, were now engaged in a standoff over what system of beliefs would prevail over the slowly recovering nations of Europe. The Soviet Union wasted no time in forming an Eastern Bloc, a group of satellite nations controlled by puppet governments, whose primary purpose was to provide a buffer of sorts between Russian soil and the other nations of Europe, sealing their new territory behind tightly controlled borders that came to be called "The Iron Curtain". The USSR had no intention of stopping their expansions, making no secret of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the start of the Cold War, bomber and fighter aircraft fitted with cameras were sufficient for this role, but as the Soviet's air defenses became increasingly sophisticated, and threats to aircraft began to mount, it became obvious that something else was needed. By the start of the 1950's, the US Air Force needed something new. One of the designs that was submitted, though rejected by the Air Force, was funded by the Central Intelligence Agency under the codename AQUATONE. The aircraft, which became well known in the later years of the Cold War as the U–2, was designed, built, and flown in the top secret world of "Black" aircraft, completely unknown by the public for nearly ten years. It's primary defense was the ability to fly at up to 70,000 feet above sea level, safe above the reach of Soviet defenses in the late 50's. The U–2 was used in operations over the Eastern Bloc, hot–spots in Asia and the Middle East, even over China, observing everything from submarine bases to farming. The first time it was used to overfly the Soviet Union itself, however, the aircraft was downed by the blast effect of a Russian SA–2 Surface to Air missile. In the attempt the Soviets destroyed two of their own aircraft, but the damage was done; the U–2 was no longer secret, it's wreckage displayed by the Soviets for the world ... Some speculate that the "Black Bird's" successor is in test at Groom Lake right now. Over that last decade Area 51 has also come to be associated with UFO's. There were stories that a flying saucer, that allegedly crashed at Roswell, New Mexico, had been brought to the Nellis Complex and was under study. This tale as further bolstered by the story of Bob Lazer. In 1986 a gentleman named Bob Lazer went to the press. He claimed that he was a former government physicist and had been assigned to work in a secret underground base, designated "S4", that was about 15 miles south of Groom Lake at a place called Papoose Lake. • 121. Scram Jet Essay The SCRAMJET, simply abbreviated from Supersonic Combustion Ramjet, is the latest evolution of the jet engine family. NASA made the news with each test of the X–43A scramjet craft, so I set about to discover why this type of jet engine should garner so much scientific attention. Turbojet The most basic jet engine is the turbojet. As soon as the air enters the front of the engine, the blades of the compressor, compresses the air before funneling it into the combustion chamber. During the compression, not only is the density of the air increased by compressing it in a confined chamber, but the temperature of the air also increases as the air molecules of squeezed closer together. The resulting air that emerges into the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Turboprop The turboprop (turbo propeller) engine combines the simple propeller engine with that of the turbojet. In this case, in addition to driving the compressor, the turbine also drives a propeller. The propeller provides thrust like a normal propeller (the wedge shape of the blades pushes the air back), in addition to the thrust produced by the turbojet part of the engine. Ramjet The ramjet engine is a much simpler construction than either the propeller or turbojet engine. Unlike these the other engines that require moving parts (propeller, compressor, turbine, shaft, etc), the ramjet consists basically of a tube that scoops the air into the combustion chamber where it is mixed with fuel and ignited, and exhausts the hot gasses through the necked down exhaust nozzle. Because of the high speeds of operation, instead of compressing the air, the chamber of the ramjet actually expands and thereby slows the air to subsonic speeds for the combustion process. The force of the incoming air forces the combustion to be kept behind the inlet. Because of this fact, the engine cannot be operated at subsonic velocities (Velocities below Mach 1 – One time the speed of sound or roughly 740 mph at standard temperature and pressure). Hence another engine has to accelerate the plane to the point where the ramjet can function. On the other hand, because of its simplistic construction, the ramjet engine can ... • 125. The Importance Of Reducing The Intensity Of A Sonic Boom Shawn Merrick–Miller Ryan Cilsick Science Research 12/20/16 The importance of reducing the intensity of a sonic boom is essential to making supersonic flight a possibility for passenger aircraft over land. Currently, supersonic flight over land in the US is prohibited by the FAA due to the annoyance associated with the sonicboom to people (observers) on the ground. The advancement of sonic boom reduction could lead to the advancement in the way we travel around the world with amazing speeds. Speeds up to mach 3.3 at 88,000ft (That 's nearly 17 miles!) can be achieved in an SR–71 Blackbird, that keep in mind, it was made and introduced in 1966. 50 years later, we have the ability to transport people vast distances and at high speeds safely, but we don't. Why not? Getting up to speed is not the issue in this circumstance, the issue is doing it quietly. It can be said that this problem can be eliminated by making a suborbital transport aircraft, which could be very beneficial, but will still create a sonic boom, and will still, annoy people. At a higher price. Supersonic flight was pioneered by the air force in 1947, when Chuck Yeager became the first man to break the sound barrier. Shortly after, supersonic aircraft research was started. "Supersonic cruising aircraft did not begin until the mid–1950 's. Research on such aircraft had its origins in the United States in the work which was begun in 1954 or 1955 in support of the Air Force XB–70 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The focus of my background paper is the KC–135 "Stratotanker" or "Tanker" and how this aircraft has supplied fuel since the 1950s, making it the longest–serving aircraft in Air Force history. My first point explains the diversity of air mobility missions possible with the KC–135, and the continuous upgrades performed on the aircraft to keep up with the most modern aircraft worldwide. My second point highlights the role of the KC–135 in the Cold War and conflict in Vietnam. And to conclude, I will share the Air Force's plans to gradually phase out the KC–135 over the next 20–30 years with Boeing's KC–46 "Pegasus". 2. The KC–135 is capable of airlifting "up to 83,000 pounds of cargo and 58 passengers" and transporting patients during aeromedical evacuations, but the main mission is in–flight refueling. However, "414 [Tankers] are still flying, including 180 in Guard," so the replacement process will be slow, with approximately 12 new KC–46 Pegasus per year. Therefore, the Air Force expect another 20–30 years of service before the KC–135 "E and R models meet their lifetime flying hour limits of 36,000 and 39,000 hours." Future requirements for aerial refueling might include refueling unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which neither the KC–135 nor the KC– 46 can do. 5.
