Corpus Callosotomy Case Study
The Corpus Callosum(CC) is a band of nerve fibers located in the cerebral cortex. Dividing the
cortex, the corpus callosum acts as a way of communication between the light and right
hemispheres. The CC is one of the largest structures of white matter in the brain and contains over
200 million axons. These axons send out electrical impulses from the neurons cell body. The
neurons in the CC is also insulated by myelin sheath, which facilitates the transmission of
information at a quicker pace. The CC transfers cognitive, sensory and motor information between
the hemispheres into the appropriate lobes.
The anterior part of the corpus callosum is called the Genu; the posterior is called the Splenium;
between the two would be the body, also known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By eliminating the pathway of communication between the hemispheres, a seizure can be kept from
spreading. The procedure is called Corpus callosotomy, two–thirds of the anterior CC is sectioned
off for a partial callosotomy; one–third of the posterior is sectioned for a complete callosotomy. The
complete callosotomy of the CC is know as a split–brain procedure. By severing the communication
of the hemisphere, both will have its own impulses; acting as "two brains" in one body. However, a
split–brain procedure is dangerous and most doctors recommend a partial callosotomy then the
complete split of the brain. Other diseases such as Alien hand syndrome (AHS) and Agenesis of the
corpus callosum (ACC) can occur due to damage in the CC. Alien hand syndrome is the involuntary
movement of a persons hand without their awareness and a lack of control over the action. ACC is a
birth defect due to the absence of the corpus callosum. This occurs if the CC fails to develop
normally between the third and twelfth week of pregnancy. This can lead to vision impairment, poor
motor control, low perception of pain and difficulty chewing and

Critical Analysis Of Ordinary Men By Christopher Browning
Ordinary Men by Christopher Browning focuses on the true nature of the Nazi police officers during
World War II and how they became infamous for their actions against the Jewish population. This
piece adequately address the social context in which normal every day Germans could turn into
killing machines with a sole purpose of wiping out an entire demographic of people. Browning
outlines his research in his thesis which explains that "the insidious effects of constant propaganda
indoctrination...made it all easier for the majority of the policemen to conform to the norms of their
immediate community." In this novel, Browning lays his arguments in a clear and concise manor
that make his audience a broader reach for all those interested in a history of the Holocaust.
Christopher Browning is best known for his work and research surrounding the time of the
Holocaust. He, as a fundamentalist, shifts the focus from the leadership of Hitler to the institution of
the Third Reich itself as the culprit of atrocities. While there is plenty blame to hand to Hitler, his
belief system states that there were many other factors included to the creation of the Final Solution.
Browning was a professor of history from 1972 to 2014, with a specialization in Nazis and
Holocaust history. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; whose purpose
is to study and make advancements from intellectual conundrums effecting society. Because of his
key knowledge of this subject,

The New Jim Crow By Michelle Alexander
The book, The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander is about the mass incarceration of African
Americans in the criminal justice system. It depicts individuals who were arrested on drug crimes.
Because these individuals are labeled as criminals, it becomes difficult for them to find work,
housing, and public assistance. (Alexander, 2010) The themes in this book include denial and
ignorance, racism and violence, and drugs. Denial and ignorance is a common behavior noted in this
book. Many times people do not react to what is going on around them, even though they may have
a sense of what is going on. Some individuals may walk away from a scene so they don't have to get
caught up and involved. There are also many stereotypes of people of ... Show more content on

It is called racial profiling and is very disconcerting to me. Similar to how Michelle Alexander
explained a situation like this in her book, Ruth woke up to policeman banging on her door at 3 am
and being handcuffed and led away in her pajamas right in front of her son. Police officers tackled
her son and put handcuffs on him. They searched through her rooms, knocking everything over, and
making a mess. Though this was a fictitious, it was based on real life situations. (Picoult, 2016)
Racism played a major role in this case, and could have sentenced an innocent live to prison. In the
book, The New Jim Crow, Michelle Alexander talked about the War on Drugs and how it led to
mass incarceration. It also mentions how the largest increase in prisons was during Bill Clinton 's
presidency. "The Clinton Administration 's 'tough on crime' policies resulted in the largest increases
in federal and state prison inmates of any president in American history." (Alexander, p. 56) The
punishment for the third offense was life in prison. I believe the War on Drugs continues to be a
major issue for this country for a while, but that doesn't mean we should be seeing the same people
in and out of prison. I believe we need to create programs within the criminal justice system to help
individuals become successful and get drugs far away from them. Group therapy may be a start for
some of these individuals. They can talk about why they became

Night By Elie Wiesel Analysis
Night by Elie Wiesel tells a very powerful story about the severe oppression that Jewish people
faced during the time of World War II. We received a first –hand account of the emotions, thoughts
and struggles of these people as they experienced days, weeks, months, and years of torture. Jewish
people were mistreated by people who believed had authority over them, people who believed they
were not worthy of being treated like humans. Throughout the novel, we encounter situations that
testify to the statement that "might is not right", a belief that you can take any action necessary
because you are considered to be the most powerful. We first see this idea at the very beginning of
the novel. The Jewish people in the town of Sighet are frantic, scared and confused. Their whole
lives are hanging on by a thread and they are beginning to live their lives in uncertainty about their
future. They try to remain optimistic and positive about their living situation, but as each day
progresses, the situation worsens. "Everything happened very quickly. The race toward death had
begun." (Wiesel 10) The amount of injustice in this situation is obvious. People are being thrown out
of their houses without justification or reasoning, causing chaos in their lives. The situation worsens
as we analyze the execution of these plans, with people being forced to leave all valuables and
sentimental items behind, not being provided food or water, and being forced to wait in despair. No

The Third Policeman John Divney
At the start of the first chapter of The Third Policeman, the narrator right away tells the audience his
darkest secret. He murdered a man and not many people know the crime he committed. He describes
how he killed him with a stab to the jaw, but he also mentions how he was instructed to kill Philip
Mathers by someone else. According to the narrator, John Divney, despite being lazy and idle–
minded, he is the one responsible for all of the narrator's misfortunes. Furthermore, the narrator then
explains how he didn't know his parents. His mother was always working at the bar and his father
spent all his time working the land. He describes how his relationship with his father was basically
non–existent. He showed the sheepdog more affection

Flann O'Brien, Dickens and Joyce: Form, Identity and Colonial Influences
All quotations from The Third Policeman are taken from the 1993 Flamingo Modern Classic edition.
In this essay I intend to examine Flann O'Brien's The Third Policeman in the context of the time of
its writing, 1940, its relation to certain English novelistic traditions and also the broader Irish
literary tradition in which it belongs.
Seamus Deane refers to Ireland as a "Strange Country" and indeed O'Brien's own narrator recalls the
words of his father:
" . . . he would mention Parnell with the customers and say that Ireland was a queer country." (7)
Such a concurrence indicates to a degree the peculiar nature of the Irish situation with regard to ...

The publication of Ulysses with what Declan Kiberd has called its " . . . cathedral–like structure . . .
" (Interview), left an anxiety of influence for many Irish writers. Where could one go fictionally
after Ulysses?
Ulysses, seen as an attempt at an all encompassing, encyclopaedic form is more indicative of a post–
colonial mimic anxiety than the work of O'Brien. Post–colonial is used here in the sense of the
beginning of resistance rather than as a chronological marker. The "cathedral–like structure" while
splendid, and the pointed satire of parody of English form suggests a literary materialism and an
overwhelming desire to beat them at their own game. To install oneself and one's work in the epic
tradition may well place one on the European literary map but it may also betray an anxiety which
legitimates such hegemony.
O'Brien's subversion of bildungsroman and flight into a non–realist surrealistic mode is suggestive
also of a more pressing discontent with the Irish Free State and its intolerance of difference. The
balloon episode functions as an allegory of a tendency to prohibit freedom and intrude upon the
privacy of the individual. (163–65) Sergeant Pluck concludes:
"That is a nice piece of law and order for you, a terrific indictment of democratic self–government, a
beautiful commentary on Home Rule." (165)

Imagery in Ragged Dick Essay examples
Imagery in Ragged Dick
Imagery plays a big part in the success of a novel. Different writers have different styles. The good
thing about imagery is it makes room for the reader to put things together. The reader is allowed to
interpret the story the way that they like. "Ragged Dick", Horatio Alger, Jr. did a great thing with
imagery. While reading the novel readers had a change to envision many things that were mentioned
in each chapter. Algar interconnected the appearances of the main character to his living
arrangement. He also connected these things with the character's attitude.
"Ragged Dick" is about a young boy, name Dick Hunter, who earns his living by shining shoes in

After Dick and Frank departed from each other, Dick had a lot on his mind. He started thinking
about his future. Before he met Frank he did not think about his future much. He would spend all his
money on things that he did not need, Such as smoking and gambling. The first thing Dick did when
Frank left was get his self a good meal. He ate at a restaurant that he may have not been able to eat
at because of his clothes. The next thing he started thinking about was where he was going to sleep.
He decided to get a room. He went to a house that was kept by his friend 's mother.
This was the beginning of him changing for the better. When he got to the house the lady was a little
confessed about why someone dressed as neat as him would want to sleep in her house. "Have you
got a room to let?" asked Dick. " Is it for yourself you ask?" questioned the woman, in some
surprise. Dick answered in the affirmative. " I haven't got any very good rooms vacant. There's a
small room in the third story." " I'd like to see it," said Dick. " I don't know as it would be good

Comparison between marriage customs in America and Nigeria
Research design
It is often said that marriages are made in Heaven, and therefore, a suitable partner is very much of a
necessity so as to lead a very happy and satisfied life. We often witness two types of Marriages,
mainly, love marriages and arranged marriages. In love marriage, two adults decide to involve
themselves in the holy bond of matrimony and in the other the families of the groom and the bride,
or the third parties, a very active role in determining the match. In earlier days arranged marriages
were the norm; this research provides a comparative analysis of the different practices and beliefs in
marriage in the American and Nigerian contexts. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Policeman of the World Essay
Assignment 2.2: Policeman of the World Final Pape
HIS105 – Contemporary U.S. History
3/15/14
Since gaining independence from the British in 1776, the United States foreign policy over the years
has gone from expansionist to isolationism to defending democracy. With the responsibility of
defending democratic rights for those who cannot defend themselves, the United States in my
opinion has taken on the role of "policeman of the world." This role became more evident with the
use of U.S. military force in international incidents like U.S. intervention in the 2011 Libyan Civil
War to oust Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, and U.S. involvement in the 2011 Yemeni Civil War

These businessmen saw the potential of further economic expansion by having access to overseas
markets and materials.
Three international incidents from the past five years that can be traced back to a foreign policy
created after the Civil War are Vietnam, Somalia, and Iraq. The Vietnam War began in 1955 and was
fought between communist North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The regime of North Vietnam and its
allies known as the Viet Cong were supported by the Russian government while South Vietnam's
primary ally was the United States.
In 1991 the President of Somalia Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown and this led to the beginning
of a civil war. During this time various militias vied for control of the country. This marked a period
of intense violence and fighting which eventually required both United Nations Peacekeeping forces
and U.S. military involvement.
The Iraqi war of 2003 started after Iraq claimed to possess weapons of mass destruction. Under the
dictatorship of Saddam Hussein, some segments of the Iraqi population prospered while others were
threatened with violence, tortured, and killed. Under Saddam Hussein's regime, Iraq developed
chemical weapons that were used against its enemies and even its own people.

Part I: "What You Pawn I will Redeem" by Sherman Alexie The homeless narrator of the short story
"What You Pawn I will Redeem" by Sherman Alexie is an intelligent, articulate man who has fallen
into the trap of alcoholism and despair. He believes that he has no future and no identity in a city
filled with homeless, cast–off Indians. No one takes notice of him, anymore, he says, although he
does seem to have some friends, including a policeman who asks Jackson Jackson at one point why
he is wasting his life away. However, the policeman a problem with addiction himself, in the form of
sweets he shouldn't be eating because of his diabetes and weight problem. Although Jackson has a
sharp sense of humor, he seems unable to 'follow through' with anything. At the beginning of the
story, when trying to redeem his grandmother's regalia from a pawn shop, the first thing he does is
purchase 'liquid courage' (alcohol) with the little money he possesses. But some of the money he
manages to gain and lose over the course of the narrative he spends in compassionate ways, such as
when he buys some food for his fellow Indians. At the end of the story, although Jackson has no
money he has clearly learned a great deal, based upon his struggles, and has found a sense of
something worthwhile to fight for in life. Eventually, the pawn shop owner decides to give Jackson
his grandmother's regalia. This illustrates the fact that Jackson is not invisible as he once feared. He

The Tell-Tale Heart By Edgar Allen Poe
For this assignment, I have chosen the short story, "The Tell–Tale Heart," by Edgar Allen Poe. In
this story, the narrator is a mentally–ill man who has murdered an old man because of the 'power in
his eye.' The story is written in the first person, where the readers are only exposed to the narrator's
thoughts and perspective, making this story a first person limited point of view. Because of the
mental state of the narrator, as well as his desire to prove his innocence after he has committed a
murder, it is safe to assume that the narrator is unreliable. There are events that may be twisted to his
convenience, to gain sympathy from the reader or to try and make them understand his intentions in
the same light as he sees them.
The portion of the story that will be rewritten is the following : "It is impossible to say how the idea
first entered my head. There was no reason for what I did. I did not hate the old man; I even loved
him. He had never hurt me. I did not want his money. I think it was his eye. His eye was like the eye
of a vulture, the eye of one of those terrible birds that watch and wait while an animal dies, and then
fall upon the dead body and pull it to pieces to eat it. When the old man looked at me with his
vulture eye a cold feeling went up and down my back; even my blood became cold. And so, I finally
decided I had to kill the old man and close that eye forever!"

Analysis of Psycho Essay
Analysis of Psycho Psycho, originally released in 1957 as a novel written by Robert Bloch, is now
better known as a film by the true master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. The version was first
viewed by the audience on a big screen in 1960. Taking on the role of the editor and director, he
created a film that merely survived the censorship laws. In the course of making the film he broke
all film conventions at the time by displaying its leading female having lunch in her white
undergarments in the first scene. Next there was the shot of a toilet, and flush, inside a bathroom.
And finally killing off the star of the show, Janet Leigh, a third of the way through the film, but

The music reflects the tension of the character, which in turn the audience can also feel through the
discordant sounds. Although at times of high tension that involve dialog the music is pushed aside to
make way for the silence that is broken only by the sound of the characters voices. At these points
the music is not needed because the audience is deeply mesmerised by the dialog they are hearing.
The other purpose that this scene fulfils is it manipulates the audience into thinking that the film is
all about the $40,000 that Marion has stolen. Hitchcock does this by showing that her employer is
suspicious of her and thinks that she may have the money. Hitchcock also follows up this 'red
herring' by having a policeman follow her who is also clearly highly suspicious of the women.
Marion is found asleep on the front seat of her car by the passing policeman. She immediately seems
edgy, suspicious and scared which are passed to the audience through the clever camera angles that
the director uses. He purposefully uses close ups that magnify Marion's emotions through her facial
expressions making it easier for the audience feel the emotions he wants them to feel. However he
hides the emotions of the policeman by hiding his eyes behind his sunglasses creating suspense
amongst the audience because they are

Laura And Howie Learning Experience Was Justifiable?
First Argumentative Paragraph One important reason that Laura and Howie learning experience was
justifiable is that Laura and Howie need a place to sleep because they don't have anywhere to sleep.
''Shut up we're not sleeping in the wood unless we have to and your sick anyways. pg.#113 My
reasoning is that this proves my evidence because Laura and Howie needed a place to sleep and they
found a hotel but they just needed they key and Laura said that their not going to sleep in the woods
unless the have to. so this proves why they need sleep.some others might say this was foolish
because they say this was illegal because the broke in a hotel but I say this was a good thing because

The Death Of Ivan Ilyich
The Death of Ivan Ilyich portrays death as a futile encounter that marks the end of humanity. Death
consequently portrays life as meaningless as it isolates Ivan from the worldly happiness to another
world of fear for uncertainty. Therefore, it is a sad experience that marks the end of a human era.
Grief and a feeling of loss accompany death for the family and society. Conversely, The Third
Policeman portrays death as a path towards wealth exploitation. In effort to accumulate wealth, the
narrator is willing to do whatever possible, include taking another person's life. Death is also used as
a foundation for the development of the plot that helps the audience understand the narrator's
experience as a murderer while providing them with interesting, silly, and somewhat absurd
experiences. Despite their varying perceptions about death and the incorporation of it as a
significant theme and element in both plots, it's interesting to note how this seemingly common
theme converges in the two novels as well. The Death of Ivan Ilych (1886) appears to uncover the
social history of death while representing the wretched mood. On the contrary, Flann O'Brien's The
Third Policeman (1967) brings the theme of death with a comical relief.
The Third Policeman reveals how human subconscious intentions can push one to levels whereby
individuals are consciously reluctant to go. However, the novel also presents reflections by the
author that reveals signs of being flustered and frightened by what

Point Of View In Stephen Crane's The Bride Comes To Yellow...
In his short story, The Bride Comes To Yellow Sky, Stephen Crane uses a variety of literary
elements to tell a story about a newly married couple. Some of these elements include the often
overlooked point of view. The point of view in which a story is told has a critical impact on how
readers understand the story. Point of view is a literary device whose importance is often
overlooked. The point of view in which a story is told in has a critical impact on how the story is
comprehended. In The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky, the short story is told in third person omniscient.
This point of view allows readers to go into the minds and thoughts of all characters in the story.
Each character the author uses, has an important role in plot development as well as giving insight
on some background history of the main characters. The third person omniscient point of view gives
readers more knowledge about the story as a whole than other points of view. Author Stephen Crane
uses point of view to give background information on the main character, Jack Potter. "Oh, he's the
town policeman. He goes out and fights Scratchy when he starts acting this way."(21) Readers learn
that one of the main characters, Jack, was the town policeman, and that fighting Scratchy wasn't a

During this meeting, Finnucane reveals that he has a wooden leg, is a robber and "a black murderer
also. Every time I rob a man I knock him dead because I have no respect for life, not a little," (46).
This is the very instance where it can be considered that Martin Finnucane is a mirror character for
the narrator. The narrator, like Finnucane, has a wooden leg, and is guilty of robbing and killing a
man. During this first meeting, the narrator cannot believe that Finnucane is a murder, although he is
guilty of these sins, too. Martin can be considered to be the reflection of the parts of the narrator's
self that he refuses to see. During their conversation, after bonding over the fact that they both have
wooden legs, the murder finally introduces himself as "'Martin Finnucane,' he repeated, listening to
his own voice as if he were listening to the sweetest music in the world," (47). It should be
considered that Finnucane actually knowing his name was a relief to him, and this action had a

Analysis Of The Short Story ' Saboteur ' By Ha Jin
The short story " Saboteur" by Ha Jin, is narrated in a limited third person point of view. The third
person narration choice allows the reader to closely follow the
character, Mr. Chiu who has been arrested for a crime he did not commit. As the short
story goes on the narration allows the read to learn more of what Mr. Chiu is
experiencing throughout his stay in jail and also important lessons he learns along the
way.
As the reader is first introduced to the main character Mr. Chiu he is quietly
dining with his newlywed when suddenly a policeman throws a bowl of tea at their feet.
The policeman denies that he has done anything wrong and the reader experiences Mr.
Chiu's first taste of being harassmed by the Government. The policemen call Mr. Chiu "...a saboteur,
you know?" "You're disrupting public order.", although he has done nothing wrong. Here it is
narrated just how wrongly the Government and police department are using their power, they are
taking advantage of innocent people such as Mr. Chiu. The third person point of view allows the
reader to see an outside perspective on how the Government is very powerful and how they are
clearly taking advantage of Mr. Chiu. Once Mr. Chiu is taken to the jail he is taken to speak with the
chief who does not believe him when Mr. Chiu tries to tell his side of the story "That statement is
groundless." "You have no witness. How could I believe you?". The third person point of view
shows that Mr. Chiu is getting

Outline and Evaluate One or More Explanations of Why...
Outline and Evaluate one or more explanations of why people obey It has been found by Milgram
that people obey for four main reasons these are; legitimate authority, the momentum of compliance,
the agentic shift and passivity. The first reason that Milgram found that people obey is because
people feel like they have to obey someone if they have a high social status or a highly respected
job, this is called legitimate authority. Bickman (1974) supported this theory by doing an experiment
on the streets of New York. Bickman had three men dress up as a policeman, a guard and a regular
passerby in a shirt and tie, he then had the three men ask other passerby's to either pay a parking fine
or pick something of the floor, it was found that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second reason people obey is called the momentum of compliance. Otherwise known as the
'foot in the door' technique, it is usually used by salesmen as they are trying to sell items, they start
up with the smaller items and work their way up to the bigger, more costly items. Smith and Mackie
(2003) found that similar processes take part in real–life crimes where criminals usually work their
way up from smaller crimes to bigger, life threatening crimes. Milgram found that the momentum of
compliance was found in his experiment, as the switches were going up in only 15v each time the
participant started small and worked their way up to the bigger shocks and then without it actually
hitting home, they've actually killed someone but they weren't able to stop. Like the well–known
Pringles saying 'once you pop you can't stop'. The third reason for why people obey is when a
person shifts from the autonomous state to the agentic state; this is called the agentic shift. Milgrams
participants believed they were 'just following orders' and did not consider themselves responsible;
his participants even sighed with relief when the experimenter said "I am responsible for what
happens here." Evidence from war criminals, has shown that Eichmann, who was trialled and found
guilty for the Nazi war killings as he was the man who organized which camps the Jewish people
would end up at, said "it wasn't my

Themes Of Osmosis Jones Monomyth
Osmosis Jones and the Monomyth Osmosis Jones tells the story of a white blood cell who plays the
role of a policeman inside a man named Frank. Teamwork is the central theme in Osmosis Jones,
and is developed through the monomyth. The monomyth or hero's journey shows the steps that most
movies go through, for example, The Matrix, Harry Potter, and Hunger Games. Most of these stories
pass through twelve specific steps. According to Joseph Campbell, in his book, The Hero With a
Thousand Faces, "The monomyth is a structure that is common in many heroic stories, an outline
that has existed for millennia." This story follows the main steps within the monomyth, while each
step helps strengthen the theme. Osmosis Jones, the main protagonist, lives his everyday life as a
rebellious germ policeman in the mouth. The first step of the monomyth, or his call to adventure is
when Frank, the body he is trying to protect, contracts a deadly virus named Thrax. Thinking Thrax
was just a common cold Frank consumes a pill called Drixenol. Drixenol, also known as Drix,
befriends Jones as they are assigned partners on the cold case. Drix helps fulfill the second step of
the monomyth, and becomes Jones assistance. This is where the two join as one and become a team.
Although Jones and Drix go through a lot of small trials their first big trial, and the third step of the
monomyth, is their encounter with Thrax in the nose. While in Franks nose Thrax turns the pressure
pods up which destroys all the walls in his nostril. This causes a runny nose which Jones and Drix
struggle to contain. After the nose incident Jones and Drix work together to extract evidence from
the old know–it–all chicken pox influenza. With Jones smooth talking and Drix's big gun they use
teamwork to beat the truth out of the old timer. Knowing all about Thrax they set off to find and
defeat the menacing virus. Finally, they find Thrax at a new club on Franks forehead named The Zit.
As they listen in on Thrax's plan to kill Frank within forty–eight hours they are discovered. Through
teamwork they destroy The Zit and all the germs within it including Thrax, or so they think. Thrax
miraculously survives the explosion and moves forward with his plan to kill Frank.

Ethical Guidelines that are Broken in Milgram's Study on Obedience
The ethical guidelines suggest that debriefing the participants after the experiment is essential,
which Milgram has done it thoroughly in order to reveal the aim and the true purpose of his study.
Although he did not expect the out come of his research, but his ethics shows that the research is
beneficial of understanding the welfare of World War II.
However, it is unethical at some point of his research because he breaks the guidelines of deception
and the right to non–participation. Gross deception by telling lies to the participants that the learner
in the room would be punish by electric shocks when giving an incorrect ... Show more content on

The second problem will be it is difficult to anticipate how a person my react to experimental
situations. The assumptions are usually less significant to the actual observation results. Milgram
asked a variety of people to guess how many people will obey in his experiment with the pressure
and commands from an authority figure. Almost all participants have obeyed in his experiment,
which is unexpected; since he and the majority of people think that the participants will not obey
because of the commands that can harm someone. It is not his fault.
Third problem is to get beneficial research. Sometimes psychologists have to get people to deceive
or even do harmful things that are unethical. The participants are told to keep on giving in electric
shocks to the learner by the authority figure due to obedience. They do not know that the learner is
an actor who is screaming and groaning, which is actually pretending to be shocked. This leads to a
clear reflection of how the World War II happens similarly to this research, whereas is beyond the
limits of the ethical guidelines nowadays.
The last problem Milgram will face to make his research more ethical is the rating of the ecological
validity. Research conducts in real life situations may not always ask for full consent

Why These Word Meanings Have Changed Over The Years
I believe that the reason that these word meanings have changed over the years because of the
numerous interpretations of the words that have transpired over the years by people. Within the
many cultures and classes of people, there are words that are used that are the same in spelling, but
are very different in their meaning. The first word that comes to my mind that is used differently
with my friends than it was used by my parents is the word gay. In this day and time, the word gay is
used to describe a person who is interested in the same gender. When my parents were growing up,
being gay meant that someone was happy. The second word that comes to my mind that is used

Themes of White Supremacy in Power by Audre Lorde
White Supremacy: An Act of Physical Violence Power by Audre Lorde is a five stanza poem
depicting her emotions after hearing the news of a black ten year–old boy being shot to death by a
white policeman. Lorde uses a prose poem to describe her anger and hatred towards the unjust
system. Lorde is advocating awareness to the racial injustice to show society difficulties people face
through race. Power uses Lorde's work through a literal and nonliteral context to demonstrate white
supremacy. In her poem, she uses a time frame between the shooting and the trial case. She uses that
to her advantage to show her initial anger toward the oppressed. Each stanza details how much
power a race can have and how they use it to be superior. In the first stanza, Lorde is making it a
mission statement to adults. "The difference between poetry and rhetoric/is being ready to kill/
yourself/ instead of your children" (Lorde). She believes that if adults had the power to do anything,
it would be protecting children. This is implied as adults needing to act as protectors to children,
especially from violence. Lorde is a mother herself. She is expressing her anger to adults who do not
have a desire to save children. The children become a possession of the adult with "your". Children
immediately become the adult's responsibility and they need to be in their care. However, she speaks
out against wrong actions caused by hatred. The hatred comes from racism, especially when it was

While Jade and Sarah were sound asleep a gunmetal coloured truck pulled up beside the house.
Three muscular men with black rucksacks jumped quietly out the vehicle. One of the three eyed up
the house and gleamed as if it was a gold mine. They seemed to have no trouble with entering the
house. They were stunned to see piles of boxes. At which point, their gleaming faces dropped in

The Third Policeman: A Lesson in Absurdity Essay
The Third Policeman: A Lesson in Absurdity
The protagonist in Flann O'Brien's novel The Third Policeman has spent the past several days
following the bizarre characters Policeman MacCruiskeen and Sergeant Pluck in an even more
bizarre world of his own creation. The narrator, who is bent on receiving his treasure, which is
tucked securely inside a black box, follows these characters patiently waiting to receive his fate
neatly packed away in a box. The narrator finds himself in the midst of a world in which it takes
every stretch of the imagination of the reader and the narrator to understand. O'Brien asks the reader
to suspend disbelief and follow along for the ride. O'Brien pushes the boundaries of postmodernism

O'Brien tosses the reader on their ear; spinning the world upside–down, and breaks from the
modernist view of literature. Through The Third Policeman, O'Brien rebuts these 20th century
theories and begs to ask the question "How far can I bend the human mind through literature and
still have the reader believe? How far is too far? The answer can be found within the pages of The
Third Policeman. The beginning of the 20th century brought about a time of experimentation and
quest to understand the human existence, postmodernism, and enlightenment; science and
technology, education and scholarship move to the forefront, replacing the traditional and religious
previous mindset. The search for enlightenment sent intellectuals and artist asking questions that
were not grounded in faith or tradition and usually took aim at the Catholic Church. O'Brien
questioning his own beliefs sought to understand these "new" theories founded in scientific proof.
The evidence from these endeavors sprang theories from creation to interworking of the human
brain. Let's first begin by defining the word satire; what is satire? Satire is a literary device used to
criticize or expose an individual or society, usually political, but not always. Satire is usually used to
make fun of or exaggerate corruption of blunders of humanity in a humorous manner. So, how does
satire fit into Flann O'Brien's novel The Third Policeman?
O'Brien uses satire to expose the ridiculousness of the "search

Third Policeman Symbolism
Trivial details that initially appear insignificant may present greater importance. In Flann O'Brien's
The Third Policeman, an unnamed narrator attempts to enlist the help of the local authorities in his
search of a missing treasure. Unfortunately for him, the policemen exhibit extremely odd behavior,
and their eccentric natures create multiple hinderances in his quest. While these behaviors often
differ, the one aspect that remains constant is their obsession with bicycles. Throughout the novel,
the bicycle becomes a reoccurring symbol that the narrator cannot escape. Although the bicycle
seems to be a trivial part of the narrator's journey, it is an integral component of his adventure, and
represents the illogicality and repetition the narrator is forced to endure. ... Show more content on

bicycles" (16), and the riding his bike to Old Mathers' house, he is describing the tools he and John
Divney use to murder an old man. The duo's bicycles do not seem important or significant in–and–
of–themselves; they are small components in a more important and engaging plot. However, the
word keeps finding ways to insert itself into the narrative, and reappears incessantly, yet manages to
avoid the narrator notice. The narrator himself only recognizes the inescapable nature of the bicycle

America As A Black Curse
"I reject the notion that America is in a well–deserved decline, that she and her citizens are
unexceptional. I do not believe America is the problem in the world." "I see America spreading
disaster. I see America as a black curse upon the world." The United States of America's role in the
world has been to watch over the all the other nations and intervene when necessary which makes us
the policeman of the world. The United States has our own problems; however the world would not
function properly without our strong leadership. There are obviously two sides of this argument,
Should or shouldn't America police the world?
What are the alternatives if America was not the policeman of the world? One substitute would be a
world without policeman. However, if there were no policemen criminals and terrorist would thrive
while innocent lives are harmed. During World War II the Axis Powers attempted to gain control
over all of humanity and almost succeeded at first since no one made an effort to stop them. Because
no one tried to prevent the Axis Powers from completing their mission in the beginning it led to a
world war. Sixty–two million people died in war and fifty million were soldiers as well as civilians
supporting the Allies. There was untold property damage and each country had major debts. If the
world had no policeman, nothing good would happen. Why can't the United Nations (U.N.) patrol
the world? The United Nations record of keeping peace has been very weak. The U.N.

Summary: Following his usual patrol on a downbeat for several years, a Cleveland detective saw
two strangers i.e. the petitioner and Mr. Chilton on a street corner. The two were observed
proceeding alternately back and forth along a similar path in which they stared at the same window
store for approximately twenty–four times. After completing the route, these individuals met at a
corner where they were joined by another man who left quickly. In addition to suspecting the two
men, the officer followed them and observed them rejoin the third individual a few blocks away.
Consequently, the detective approached the three men for questioning and decided to conduct a
quick search before questioning because of the nature of their behavior. Through this search, the
officer found a concealed weapon on Terry, the petitioner, and Chilton. He arrested these suspects
and two of them were charged with carrying concealed weapons in their outer garments. As the
defense attempted to restrain the weapons, the trial court discarded the prosecution theory that the
weapons were seized during a search event to a legitimate arrest. While the court also denied the
motion to restrain, it admitted the concealed weapons into evidence because the detective had
reasons to believe that the two were acting suspiciously. It also differentiated between an
investigatory stop and arrest as well as a

Should The United States Help other Countries?

unheard of support to countless countries. America has been doing this task for about 60 years, more
or less. America spends millions of dollars for the safety of countries that can't help themselves.
Obviously America cannot afford to support so many countries and itself. Either it will run out of
money or it will run out of men. Policing the world takes a lot of manpower. America is dragging
down its own future. If America supports everyone else when they are down, will they do the same
for America in the future? America, if it keeps wasting its resources to protect everyone else, will

Why would America want a bad image, as a people and as a country? Some would believe that the
U.S. is trying to flex its muscles to show its power. (Richman) However, many would agree that
America doesn't have the money or men to keep this up for much longer. The U.S. is in debt and the
average American is now poorer than the average Canadian. That doesn't say much, does it? "The
U.S. government is now responsible for more than a third of all the government debt in the entire
world." (Snyder) Why can't America just let other countries take care of themselves and be more
independent? The U.S. has a history of being bad at entangling alliances. According to George
Washington, "We need to be careful of tangling alliances" (Fromkin). For this reason, the United
States was dragged into WWI. America should be constantly increasing its military, but for national
defense, not for policing the world (Schneider). America's national security depends on America to
stop getting involved in everything and to secure its borders. If America could stop spending
millions on policing other countries; the weight of this task would be shifted to a group of nations
that have their governments under control.

Pet Peeve Research Paper
Introduction: How often do many of you see a little old woman slowly walking down the aisle at the

Suspense and Tension in Hitchcock's 1960's Film Psycho Essay
Suspense and Tension in Hitchcock's 1960's Film Psycho
The film 'Psycho' was produced in the 1960's by Alfred Hitchcock. It was a groundbreaking film in
the 1960's. It was called 'mother of the modern horror movie'. The reasons for it to be such a
landmark film were that it dealt with serious issues such as adultery and matricide. For the first time
a toilet was shown being flushed in the film. Also it was the first time a woman was shown in bra.
The film "Psycho" was highly promoted, Hitchcock wanted to manipulate his audience into fear and

to make the audience more terrified.

Corpus Callosotomy Case Study

  • 1. Corpus Callosotomy Case Study The Corpus Callosum(CC) is a band of nerve fibers located in the cerebral cortex. Dividing the cortex, the corpus callosum acts as a way of communication between the light and right hemispheres. The CC is one of the largest structures of white matter in the brain and contains over 200 million axons. These axons send out electrical impulses from the neurons cell body. The neurons in the CC is also insulated by myelin sheath, which facilitates the transmission of information at a quicker pace. The CC transfers cognitive, sensory and motor information between the hemispheres into the appropriate lobes. The anterior part of the corpus callosum is called the Genu; the posterior is called the Splenium; between the two would be the body, also known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By eliminating the pathway of communication between the hemispheres, a seizure can be kept from spreading. The procedure is called Corpus callosotomy, two–thirds of the anterior CC is sectioned off for a partial callosotomy; one–third of the posterior is sectioned for a complete callosotomy. The complete callosotomy of the CC is know as a split–brain procedure. By severing the communication of the hemisphere, both will have its own impulses; acting as "two brains" in one body. However, a split–brain procedure is dangerous and most doctors recommend a partial callosotomy then the complete split of the brain. Other diseases such as Alien hand syndrome (AHS) and Agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) can occur due to damage in the CC. Alien hand syndrome is the involuntary movement of a persons hand without their awareness and a lack of control over the action. ACC is a birth defect due to the absence of the corpus callosum. This occurs if the CC fails to develop normally between the third and twelfth week of pregnancy. This can lead to vision impairment, poor motor control, low perception of pain and difficulty chewing and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Critical Analysis Of Ordinary Men By Christopher Browning Ordinary Men by Christopher Browning focuses on the true nature of the Nazi police officers during World War II and how they became infamous for their actions against the Jewish population. This piece adequately address the social context in which normal every day Germans could turn into killing machines with a sole purpose of wiping out an entire demographic of people. Browning outlines his research in his thesis which explains that "the insidious effects of constant propaganda indoctrination...made it all easier for the majority of the policemen to conform to the norms of their immediate community." In this novel, Browning lays his arguments in a clear and concise manor that make his audience a broader reach for all those interested in a history of the Holocaust. Christopher Browning is best known for his work and research surrounding the time of the Holocaust. He, as a fundamentalist, shifts the focus from the leadership of Hitler to the institution of the Third Reich itself as the culprit of atrocities. While there is plenty blame to hand to Hitler, his belief system states that there were many other factors included to the creation of the Final Solution. Browning was a professor of history from 1972 to 2014, with a specialization in Nazis and Holocaust history. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; whose purpose is to study and make advancements from intellectual conundrums effecting society. Because of his key knowledge of this subject, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The New Jim Crow By Michelle Alexander The book, The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander is about the mass incarceration of African Americans in the criminal justice system. It depicts individuals who were arrested on drug crimes. Because these individuals are labeled as criminals, it becomes difficult for them to find work, housing, and public assistance. (Alexander, 2010) The themes in this book include denial and ignorance, racism and violence, and drugs. Denial and ignorance is a common behavior noted in this book. Many times people do not react to what is going on around them, even though they may have a sense of what is going on. Some individuals may walk away from a scene so they don't have to get caught up and involved. There are also many stereotypes of people of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is called racial profiling and is very disconcerting to me. Similar to how Michelle Alexander explained a situation like this in her book, Ruth woke up to policeman banging on her door at 3 am and being handcuffed and led away in her pajamas right in front of her son. Police officers tackled her son and put handcuffs on him. They searched through her rooms, knocking everything over, and making a mess. Though this was a fictitious, it was based on real life situations. (Picoult, 2016) Racism played a major role in this case, and could have sentenced an innocent live to prison. In the book, The New Jim Crow, Michelle Alexander talked about the War on Drugs and how it led to mass incarceration. It also mentions how the largest increase in prisons was during Bill Clinton 's presidency. "The Clinton Administration 's 'tough on crime' policies resulted in the largest increases in federal and state prison inmates of any president in American history." (Alexander, p. 56) The punishment for the third offense was life in prison. I believe the War on Drugs continues to be a major issue for this country for a while, but that doesn't mean we should be seeing the same people in and out of prison. I believe we need to create programs within the criminal justice system to help individuals become successful and get drugs far away from them. Group therapy may be a start for some of these individuals. They can talk about why they became ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Night By Elie Wiesel Analysis Night by Elie Wiesel tells a very powerful story about the severe oppression that Jewish people faced during the time of World War II. We received a first –hand account of the emotions, thoughts and struggles of these people as they experienced days, weeks, months, and years of torture. Jewish people were mistreated by people who believed had authority over them, people who believed they were not worthy of being treated like humans. Throughout the novel, we encounter situations that testify to the statement that "might is not right", a belief that you can take any action necessary because you are considered to be the most powerful. We first see this idea at the very beginning of the novel. The Jewish people in the town of Sighet are frantic, scared and confused. Their whole lives are hanging on by a thread and they are beginning to live their lives in uncertainty about their future. They try to remain optimistic and positive about their living situation, but as each day progresses, the situation worsens. "Everything happened very quickly. The race toward death had begun." (Wiesel 10) The amount of injustice in this situation is obvious. People are being thrown out of their houses without justification or reasoning, causing chaos in their lives. The situation worsens as we analyze the execution of these plans, with people being forced to leave all valuables and sentimental items behind, not being provided food or water, and being forced to wait in despair. • 13. The Third Policeman John Divney At the start of the first chapter of The Third Policeman, the narrator right away tells the audience his darkest secret. He murdered a man and not many people know the crime he committed. He describes how he killed him with a stab to the jaw, but he also mentions how he was instructed to kill Philip Mathers by someone else. According to the narrator, John Divney, despite being lazy and idle– minded, he is the one responsible for all of the narrator's misfortunes. Furthermore, the narrator then explains how he didn't know his parents. His mother was always working at the bar and his father spent all his time working the land. He describes how his relationship with his father was basically non–existent. He showed the sheepdog more affection ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Flann O'Brien, Dickens and Joyce: Form, Identity and... Flann O'Brien, Dickens and Joyce: Form, Identity and Colonial Influences All quotations from The Third Policeman are taken from the 1993 Flamingo Modern Classic edition. In this essay I intend to examine Flann O'Brien's The Third Policeman in the context of the time of its writing, 1940, its relation to certain English novelistic traditions and also the broader Irish literary tradition in which it belongs. Seamus Deane refers to Ireland as a "Strange Country" and indeed O'Brien's own narrator recalls the words of his father: " . . . he would mention Parnell with the customers and say that Ireland was a queer country." (7) Such a concurrence indicates to a degree the peculiar nature of the Irish situation with regard to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The publication of Ulysses with what Declan Kiberd has called its " . . . cathedral–like structure . . . " (Interview), left an anxiety of influence for many Irish writers. Where could one go fictionally after Ulysses? Ulysses, seen as an attempt at an all encompassing, encyclopaedic form is more indicative of a post– colonial mimic anxiety than the work of O'Brien. Post–colonial is used here in the sense of the beginning of resistance rather than as a chronological marker. The "cathedral–like structure" while splendid, and the pointed satire of parody of English form suggests a literary materialism and an overwhelming desire to beat them at their own game. To install oneself and one's work in the epic tradition may well place one on the European literary map but it may also betray an anxiety which legitimates such hegemony. O'Brien's subversion of bildungsroman and flight into a non–realist surrealistic mode is suggestive also of a more pressing discontent with the Irish Free State and its intolerance of difference. The balloon episode functions as an allegory of a tendency to prohibit freedom and intrude upon the privacy of the individual. (163–65) Sergeant Pluck concludes: "That is a nice piece of law and order for you, a terrific indictment of democratic self–government, a beautiful commentary on Home Rule." (165)

The good thing about imagery is it makes room for the reader to put things together. The reader is allowed to interpret the story the way that they like. "Ragged Dick", Horatio Alger, Jr. did a great thing with imagery. While reading the novel readers had a change to envision many things that were mentioned in each chapter. Algar interconnected the appearances of the main character to his living arrangement. He also connected these things with the character's attitude. Policeman of the World Essay Assignment 2.2: Policeman of the World Final Pape HIS105 – Contemporary U.S. History 3/15/14 Since gaining independence from the British in 1776, the United States foreign policy over the years has gone from expansionist to isolationism to defending democracy. With the responsibility of defending democratic rights for those who cannot defend themselves, the United States in my opinion has taken on the role of "policeman of the world." This role became more evident with the use of U.S. military force in international incidents like U.S. intervention in the 2011 Libyan Civil War to oust Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, and U.S. involvement in the 2011 Yemeni Civil War protesting the leadership of Yemeni ... Three international incidents from the past five years that can be traced back to a foreign policy created after the Civil War are Vietnam, Somalia, and Iraq. The Vietnam War began in 1955 and was fought between communist North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The regime of North Vietnam and its allies known as the Viet Cong were supported by the Russian government while South Vietnam's primary ally was the United States. In 1991 the President of Somalia Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown and this led to the beginning of a civil war. During this time various militias vied for control of the country. This marked a period of intense violence and fighting which eventually required both United Nations Peacekeeping forces and U.S. military involvement. The Iraqi war of 2003 started after Iraq claimed to possess weapons of mass destruction. Under the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein, some segments of the Iraqi population prospered while others were threatened with violence, tortured, and killed. Under Saddam Hussein's regime, Iraq developed chemical weapons that were used against its enemies and even its own people. Part I: "What You Pawn I will Redeem" by Sherman Alexie The homeless narrator of the short story "What You Pawn I will Redeem" by Sherman Alexie is an intelligent, articulate man who has fallen into the trap of alcoholism and despair. He believes that he has no future and no identity in a city filled with homeless, cast–off Indians. No one takes notice of him, anymore, he says, although he does seem to have some friends, including a policeman who asks Jackson Jackson at one point why he is wasting his life away. However, the policeman a problem with addiction himself, in the form of sweets he shouldn't be eating because of his diabetes and weight problem. Although Jackson has a sharp sense of humor, he seems unable to 'follow through' with anything. At the beginning of the story, when trying to redeem his grandmother's regalia from a pawn shop, the first thing he does is purchase 'liquid courage' (alcohol) with the little money he possesses. But some of the money he manages to gain and lose over the course of the narrative he spends in compassionate ways, such as when he buys some food for his fellow Indians. At the end of the story, although Jackson has no money he has clearly learned a great deal, based upon his struggles, and has found a sense of something worthwhile to fight for in life. Eventually, the pawn shop owner decides to give Jackson his grandmother's regalia. This illustrates the fact that Jackson is not invisible as he once feared. He can win the respect ... • 32. The Tell-Tale Heart By Edgar Allen Poe For this assignment, I have chosen the short story, "The Tell–Tale Heart," by Edgar Allen Poe. In this story, the narrator is a mentally–ill man who has murdered an old man because of the 'power in his eye.' The story is written in the first person, where the readers are only exposed to the narrator's thoughts and perspective, making this story a first person limited point of view. Because of the mental state of the narrator, as well as his desire to prove his innocence after he has committed a murder, it is safe to assume that the narrator is unreliable. There are events that may be twisted to his convenience, to gain sympathy from the reader or to try and make them understand his intentions in the same light as he sees them. The portion of the story that will be rewritten is the following : "It is impossible to say how the idea first entered my head. There was no reason for what I did. I did not hate the old man; I even loved him. He had never hurt me. I did not want his money. I think it was his eye. His eye was like the eye of a vulture, the eye of one of those terrible birds that watch and wait while an animal dies, and then fall upon the dead body and pull it to pieces to eat it. When the old man looked at me with his vulture eye a cold feeling went up and down my back; even my blood became cold. And so, I finally decided I had to kill the old man and close that eye forever!" Analysis of Psycho Essay Analysis of Psycho Psycho, originally released in 1957 as a novel written by Robert Bloch, is now better known as a film by the true master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. The version was first viewed by the audience on a big screen in 1960. Taking on the role of the editor and director, he created a film that merely survived the censorship laws. In the course of making the film he broke all film conventions at the time by displaying its leading female having lunch in her white undergarments in the first scene. Next there was the shot of a toilet, and flush, inside a bathroom. And finally killing off the star of the show, Janet Leigh, a third of the way through the film, but because of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The music reflects the tension of the character, which in turn the audience can also feel through the discordant sounds. Although at times of high tension that involve dialog the music is pushed aside to make way for the silence that is broken only by the sound of the characters voices. At these points the music is not needed because the audience is deeply mesmerised by the dialog they are hearing. The other purpose that this scene fulfils is it manipulates the audience into thinking that the film is all about the $40,000 that Marion has stolen. Hitchcock does this by showing that her employer is suspicious of her and thinks that she may have the money. Hitchcock also follows up this 'red herring' by having a policeman follow her who is also clearly highly suspicious of the women. Marion is found asleep on the front seat of her car by the passing policeman. She immediately seems edgy, suspicious and scared which are passed to the audience through the clever camera angles that the director uses. He purposefully uses close ups that magnify Marion's emotions through her facial expressions making it easier for the audience feel the emotions he wants them to feel. • 40. The Death Of Ivan Ilyich The Death of Ivan Ilyich portrays death as a futile encounter that marks the end of humanity. Death consequently portrays life as meaningless as it isolates Ivan from the worldly happiness to another world of fear for uncertainty. Therefore, it is a sad experience that marks the end of a human era. Grief and a feeling of loss accompany death for the family and society. Conversely, The Third Policeman portrays death as a path towards wealth exploitation. In effort to accumulate wealth, the narrator is willing to do whatever possible, include taking another person's life. Death is also used as a foundation for the development of the plot that helps the audience understand the narrator's experience as a murderer while providing them with interesting, silly, and somewhat absurd experiences. Despite their varying perceptions about death and the incorporation of it as a significant theme and element in both plots, it's interesting to note how this seemingly common theme converges in the two novels as well. The Death of Ivan Ilych (1886) appears to uncover the social history of death while representing the wretched mood. On the contrary, Flann O'Brien's The Third Policeman (1967) brings the theme of death with a comical relief. The Third Policeman reveals how human subconscious intentions can push one to levels whereby individuals are consciously reluctant to go. A lot of times, what we see in a mirror is something that we would not be able to see otherwise. In Flann O'Brien's novel, The Third Policeman, the narrator goes through a very strange experience that leads him to meet a man named Martin Finnucane. There is a belief that Finnucane is a mirror character who has a role that helps the narrator and aids to develop the novel by being a reflection of the things the narrator does not see in himself. Based on the narrator and Finnucane's first meeting and Finnucane's appearances throughout the book, it is logical that Finnucane is a mirror character to the narrator. The narrator, like Finnucane, has a wooden leg, and is guilty of robbing and killing a man. During this first meeting, the narrator cannot believe that Finnucane is a murder, although he is guilty of these sins, too. Martin can be considered to be the reflection of the parts of the narrator's self that he refuses to see. During their conversation, after bonding over the fact that they both have wooden legs, the murder finally introduces himself as "'Martin Finnucane,' he repeated, listening to his own voice as if he were listening to the sweetest music in the world," (47). • 48. Outline and Evaluate One or More Explanations of Why... Outline and Evaluate one or more explanations of why people obey It has been found by Milgram that people obey for four main reasons these are; legitimate authority, the momentum of compliance, the agentic shift and passivity. The first reason that Milgram found that people obey is because people feel like they have to obey someone if they have a high social status or a highly respected job, this is called legitimate authority. Bickman (1974) supported this theory by doing an experiment on the streets of New York. Bickman had three men dress up as a policeman, a guard and a regular passerby in a shirt and tie, he then had the three men ask other passerby's to either pay a parking fine or pick something of the floor, it was found that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second reason people obey is called the momentum of compliance. Otherwise known as the 'foot in the door' technique, it is usually used by salesmen as they are trying to sell items, they start up with the smaller items and work their way up to the bigger, more costly items. Smith and Mackie (2003) found that similar processes take part in real–life crimes where criminals usually work their way up from smaller crimes to bigger, life threatening crimes. Milgram found that the momentum of compliance was found in his experiment, as the switches were going up in only 15v each time the participant started small and worked their way up to the bigger shocks and then without it actually hitting home, they've actually killed someone but they weren't able to stop. Like the well–known Pringles saying 'once you pop you can't stop'. The third reason for why people obey is when a person shifts from the autonomous state to the agentic state; this is called the agentic shift. Milgrams participants believed they were 'just following orders' and did not consider themselves responsible; his participants even sighed with relief when the experimenter said "I am responsible for what happens here." Evidence from war criminals, has shown that Eichmann, who was trialled and found guilty for the Nazi war killings as he was the man who organized which camps the Jewish people would end up at, said "it wasn't my ... Teamwork is the central theme in Osmosis Jones, and is developed through the monomyth. The monomyth or hero's journey shows the steps that most movies go through, for example, The Matrix, Harry Potter, and Hunger Games. Most of these stories pass through twelve specific steps. According to Joseph Campbell, in his book, The Hero With a Thousand Faces, "The monomyth is a structure that is common in many heroic stories, an outline that has existed for millennia." This story follows the main steps within the monomyth, while each step helps strengthen the theme. Osmosis Jones, the main protagonist, lives his everyday life as a rebellious germ policeman in the mouth. The first step of the monomyth, or his call to adventure is when Frank, the body he is trying to protect, contracts a deadly virus named Thrax. Thinking Thrax was just a common cold Frank consumes a pill called Drixenol. Drixenol, also known as Drix, befriends Jones as they are assigned partners on the cold case. Drix helps fulfill the second step of the monomyth, and becomes Jones assistance. This is where the two join as one and become a team. Although Jones and Drix go through a lot of small trials their first big trial, and the third step of the monomyth, is their encounter with Thrax in the nose. While in Franks nose Thrax turns the pressure pods up which destroys all the walls in his nostril. This causes a runny nose which Jones and Drix struggle to contain. After the nose incident Jones and Drix work together to extract evidence from the old know–it–all chicken pox influenza. With Jones smooth talking and Drix's big gun they use teamwork to beat the truth out of the old timer. Knowing all about Thrax they set off to find and defeat the menacing virus. Finally, they find Thrax at a new club on Franks forehead named The Zit. As they listen in on Thrax's plan to kill Frank within forty–eight hours they are discovered. Almost all participants have obeyed in his experiment, which is unexpected; since he and the majority of people think that the participants will not obey because of the commands that can harm someone. It is not his fault. Third problem is to get beneficial research. Sometimes psychologists have to get people to deceive or even do harmful things that are unethical. The participants are told to keep on giving in electric shocks to the learner by the authority figure due to obedience. Themes of White Supremacy in Power by Audre Lorde White Supremacy: An Act of Physical Violence Power by Audre Lorde is a five stanza poem depicting her emotions after hearing the news of a black ten year–old boy being shot to death by a white policeman. Lorde uses a prose poem to describe her anger and hatred towards the unjust system. Lorde is advocating awareness to the racial injustice to show society difficulties people face through race. Power uses Lorde's work through a literal and nonliteral context to demonstrate white supremacy. In her poem, she uses a time frame between the shooting and the trial case. She uses that to her advantage to show her initial anger toward the oppressed. Each stanza details how much power a race can have and how they use it to be superior. In the first stanza, Lorde is making it a mission statement to adults. "The difference between poetry and rhetoric/is being ready to kill/ yourself/ instead of your children" (Lorde). She believes that if adults had the power to do anything, it would be protecting children. This is implied as adults needing to act as protectors to children, especially from violence. Lorde is a mother herself. She is expressing her anger to adults who do not have a desire to save children. The children become a possession of the adult with "your". Children immediately become the adult's responsibility and they need to be in their care. However, she speaks out against wrong actions caused by hatred. The search for enlightenment sent intellectuals and artist asking questions that were not grounded in faith or tradition and usually took aim at the Catholic Church. O'Brien questioning his own beliefs sought to understand these "new" theories founded in scientific proof. The evidence from these endeavors sprang theories from creation to interworking of the human brain. Let's first begin by defining the word satire; what is satire? Satire is a literary device used to criticize or expose an individual or society, usually political, but not always. Satire is usually used to make fun of or exaggerate corruption of blunders of humanity in a humorous manner. So, how does satire fit into Flann O'Brien's novel The Third Policeman? • 65. Third Policeman Symbolism Trivial details that initially appear insignificant may present greater importance. In Flann O'Brien's The Third Policeman, an unnamed narrator attempts to enlist the help of the local authorities in his search of a missing treasure. Unfortunately for him, the policemen exhibit extremely odd behavior, and their eccentric natures create multiple hinderances in his quest. While these behaviors often differ, the one aspect that remains constant is their obsession with bicycles. Throughout the novel, the bicycle becomes a reoccurring symbol that the narrator cannot escape. Although the bicycle seems to be a trivial part of the narrator's journey, it is an integral component of his adventure, and represents the illogicality and repetition the narrator is forced to endure. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The word "bicycle" itself appears numerous times, yet never makes a lasting impression on the narrator. When the narrator discusses the creation of a "special bicycle–pump which [Divney] manufactured himself out of a hollow iron bar" (7), bringing spades tied onto "the crossbars of our bicycles" (16), and the riding his bike to Old Mathers' house, he is describing the tools he and John Divney use to murder an old man. The duo's bicycles do not seem important or significant in–and– of–themselves; they are small components in a more important and engaging plot. However, the word keeps finding ways to insert itself into the narrative, and reappears incessantly, yet manages to avoid the narrator notice. The narrator himself only recognizes the inescapable nature of the bicycle as his journey becomes increasingly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. America As A Black Curse "I reject the notion that America is in a well–deserved decline, that she and her citizens are unexceptional. I do not believe America is the problem in the world." "I see America spreading disaster. I see America as a black curse upon the world." The United States of America's role in the world has been to watch over the all the other nations and intervene when necessary which makes us the policeman of the world. The United States has our own problems; however the world would not function properly without our strong leadership. There are obviously two sides of this argument, Should or shouldn't America police the world? What are the alternatives if America was not the policeman of the world? One substitute would be a world without policeman. However, if there were no policemen criminals and terrorist would thrive while innocent lives are harmed. During World War II the Axis Powers attempted to gain control over all of humanity and almost succeeded at first since no one made an effort to stop them. Because no one tried to prevent the Axis Powers from completing their mission in the beginning it led to a world war. Sixty–two million people died in war and fifty million were soldiers as well as civilians supporting the Allies. There was untold property damage and each country had major debts. If the world had no policeman, nothing good would happen. Why can't the United Nations (U.N.) patrol the world? The United Nations record of keeping peace has been very weak. The U.N. ... Case Summary of Terry vs. Ohio Terry vs. Ohio 392 U.S. (1968) Name Instructor Course Title Date Submitted Terry vs. Ohio: Case Summary: Following his usual patrol on a downbeat for several years, a Cleveland detective saw two strangers i.e. the petitioner and Mr. Chilton on a street corner. The two were observed proceeding alternately back and forth along a similar path in which they stared at the same window store for approximately twenty–four times. After completing the route, these individuals met at a corner where they were joined by another man who left quickly. In addition to suspecting the two men, the officer followed them and observed them rejoin the third individual a few blocks away. Consequently, the detective approached the three men for questioning and decided to conduct a quick search before questioning because of the nature of their behavior. Through this search, the officer found a concealed weapon on Terry, the petitioner, and Chilton. He arrested these suspects and two of them were charged with carrying concealed weapons in their outer garments. As the defense attempted to restrain the weapons, the trial court discarded the prosecution theory that the weapons were seized during a search event to a legitimate arrest. While the court also denied the motion to restrain, it admitted the concealed weapons into evidence because the detective had reasons to believe that the two were acting suspiciously. • 71. Should The United States Help other Countries? Is America the world's policeman? Currently it would seem so, with the United States sending unheard of support to countless countries. America has been doing this task for about 60 years, more or less. America spends millions of dollars for the safety of countries that can't help themselves. Obviously America cannot afford to support so many countries and itself. Either it will run out of money or it will run out of men. Policing the world takes a lot of manpower. America is dragging down its own future. If America supports everyone else when they are down, will they do the same for America in the future? America, if it keeps wasting its resources to protect everyone else, will eventually fail (Snyder). America is known as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why would America want a bad image, as a people and as a country? Some would believe that the U.S. is trying to flex its muscles to show its power. (Richman) However, many would agree that America doesn't have the money or men to keep this up for much longer. The U.S. is in debt and the average American is now poorer than the average Canadian. That doesn't say much, does it? "The U.S. government is now responsible for more than a third of all the government debt in the entire world." (Snyder) Why can't America just let other countries take care of themselves and be more independent? The U.S. has a history of being bad at entangling alliances. According to George Washington, "We need to be careful of tangling alliances" (Fromkin). For this reason, the United States was dragged into WWI. America should be constantly increasing its military, but for national defense, not for policing the world (Schneider). America's national security depends on America to stop getting involved in everything and to secure its borders. If America could stop spending millions on policing other countries; the weight of this task would be shifted to a group of nations that have their governments under control. "America, to be sure, has never policed the whole world, nor is it feasible for one country to do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Unethical Mount Dew Commercial Position Paper 2 For my advertisement I chose a very unethical Mt. Dew commercial. This commercial aired in 2013 and consisted of three parts. The first part of the commercial featured a goat treating the waitress terribly. When the goat does not receive his Mountain Dew immediately, he attacks the waitress verbally and physically. The next commercial follows up with the goat getting pulled over by a policeman. The policeman takes the goat to jail after finding his trunk full of Mountain Dew bottles. The third commercial ends with the previously assaulted waitress trying to pick her attacker out of a jail lineup. This lineup consists only of African American men all portrayed as ignorant and violent criminals. A short summary could never depict how horrendous and offensive this commercial is. Many are even calling it "the most racist commercial ever." I find this advertisement unethical for numerous reasons. The first major issue I had was how the female server was portrayed. Not only was she beaten by the goat, but she was also shown mentally unstable and weak. I understand the commercial was attempting to present this in a humorous manner, but I do not find any female abuse comical. The biggest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pet Peeve Research Paper Introduction: How often do many of you see a little old woman slowly walking down the aisle at the grocery store and a young adult almost run her over trying to pass her? How often do you see a young teen telling an adult about their future plans to be a policeman and the adult tells them that they should strive to be a doctor, instead of a policeman? How many of you have been working on a group project, and one of the group members don't do their part? (Attention Getter) Today I will be talking about my worst pet peeves (Reveal Topic), which are rude, pessimistic, and unreliable people. (Thesis) My first pet peeve is rude people who don't show empathy to others. (MP1) I just hate when people don't speak and walk straight pass someone who looks as though they are having a bad day. I feel that the least these people can do is speak, even if they choose not to stop and see what's going on with the person. I also hate when a nonthreatening homeless person tries to talk to someone and they reply by putting their heads in the air as though the person is beneath them. Although he had just heard me tell him about my dream of becoming mayor of Selma, he still made this reply. If I was more impressionable like many other people around my age, he could have very well shot down my plans to complete my dream of returning to Selma and becoming mayor.
