AN ANALYSIS OF SHAUNIE
O’NEAL’S ONLINE/ON-AIR
IMAGE RESTORATION
TACTICS

SHAUNIE O’NEAL
 Ex-wife of NBA player Shaquille O’Neal
 Creator and executive producer of VH1 reality-TV
show Basketball Wives (BBW)
 Due to certain elements of BBW, including
archetypal and stereotypical characteristics
displayed in episodes, O’Neal was widely criticized
by viewers.
Although O’Neal did not display these
characteristics personally, she was still held
responsible due to her prominent role in creation
and production of the show.
SHAUNIE O’NEAL
 In order to repair the damage done to her
image by BBW, O’Neal utilized social media,
such as Facebook and Twitter, in addition to
using her show itself.
 O’Neal had varying degrees of success with her
attempts at image repair.
 This study shows that the tactics O’Neal used,
which included bolstering, transcendence,
reducing offensiveness, minimizing, attacking
accusers, compensation, corrective action, and
mortification, can work IF they are authentic and
consistent.

attractiveness, social connections,
and the perceived importance of
their former or present spouse or
boyfriend.

 Due to the negative antics of its
multiracial cast, BBW often
reinforces negative stereotypes
of women of color.
 Members of the cast are
notorious for their catfights,
backstabbing, obscenities, and
gossip
Actions of the cast members
have the potential to influence
public perception of women in
general, and Black women in
particular.

Sex object: focuses on woman’s
sexuality, clothing, appearance,
behavior, and uniquely “feminine”
aspects
Mother:
 A “good mother” offers care and protection to
her children and is gentle, kind and selfless.
She is concerned mainly with the child and
his/her physical, psychological, and social
development.
Other characteristics of the “Mother”
archetype may include nagging, shrewish
behavior, and scolding.

ARCHETYPES OF WOMEN
Pet: depicts women as mascots and
cheerleaders. Women are too weak,
naïve, and/or unprepared to handle
difficult tasks without a man’s help.
Iron maiden: depicts women as
excessively strong and overpowering.
Women are too powerful or pushy to be
effective leaders.
Victim: depicts women as
representative of society and its
individuals; it groups them in with
‘ordinary people.’

 Though both are often
marginalized, Black women are
marginalized to a greater extent
than White women
 Black women are historically
depicted at ends of a spectrum:
Unintelligent or extremely educated;
ambitious or listless; attractive or ugly.
Even positive representations can have
negative undertones.

AL REPRESENTATIONS OF
BLACK WOMEN
 The ‘independent black woman’
archetype is overachieving and
financially successful on one hand, and
narcissistic and overbearing on the
other.
Also shows women as emasculating black
males.
 Another archetype, the ‘tragic
mulatto,’ highlights the idea that mixed-
race individuals are unhappy.
Presents mixed-race women as wild
half-castes who are sexually destructive.

“ANGRY BLACK WOMAN”
 Depicts Black women as upset and irate,
“bitchy,” aggressive, loud, rude, and pushy
 Spinoff of Sapphire, a historical character who
presents an undesirable depiction of Black
women.
 Shows Black women berating the Black males
in their lives with nasty confrontations and
exaggerated body language.
 Media often show the wisecracking character
with her hands on her hips and her head
thrown back as she lets everyone know she is
in charge.

 One common thread in all of
these stereotypes is the idea that
Black women have problems
forming positive relationships with
men.
 Either she is too educated and
independent to need or want a
man, or she is desperate and lost
without him, incapable of going
on, and willing to do anything to
get or keep him

Due to BBW’s negative portrayal of women of color, audiences
called for cancellation of the show. O’Neal responded to this
criticism by using Image Repair Theory to keep her show on the air
and to repair her image.
 On BBW, a large number of such
stereotypes are present, including:
Angry Black woman
Jezebel
Tragic mulatto
Victim
Mother

behavior designed to reduce, redress, or
avoid damage to their reputation from
perceived wrong doing (Burns & Bruner)
Approaches that may be taken to present a
positive image include:

STRATEGIES
Utilizing a proactive image repair
strategy is more effective in generating
positive media coverage
Hugh Grant used a proactive strategy to repair
his image after being caught with a prostitute
He immediately used mortification.
He apologized profusely on various talk shows
and appeared genuinely sorry. Media could
say little negatively about him because he had
already said it all.
He obtained forgiveness and repaired his
image.

Social media outlets are a
relatively new tool for celebrities to
repair their image and connect
with audiences
O’Neal used social media during
the 4th season of BBW, including
Facebook and Twitter.

Jon & Kate Gosselin, for example, used social
media to handle their public divorce.
Their attempts show that taking responsibility via
social media can have a positive influence on image
repair
Kate used social media to connect with the public
more effectively through personal stories,
photographs and short stories.
Jon initially used Twitter to place blame on other people, such as Kate and
the producers of their reality TV show. Eventually, Jon realized that when he
focused on his children, the public was much more receptive to forgiving him.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS:
RQ1: What cultural narratives and stereotypes
emerged in Season 4 of Basketball Wives?
RQ2: How does O’Neal address these
stereotypes in her social media and episodes
of Season 4 of the BBW?
RQ3: How did viewers respond to O’Neal’s
on-air and online image repair tactics?
 To identify stereotypes and cultural narratives of
African American women as identified in the review of
the literature, Season 4 of BBW was textually analyzed.
 To assess O’Neal’s on-air and online image repair
tactics, Facebook posts, tweets, blog
entries/comments and Season 4 episodes were
examined.
 The sample included:
VH1 blog comments
Facebook comments from O’Neal’s timeline
Tweets from O’Neal’s Twitter account

Several stereotypes were
found to be prominent in
season 4:
Tragic mulatto
Angry Black woman
The victim
The good mother

STEREOTYPES
Almost all cast members exhibited
characteristics of the “angry black woman”
stereotype
Characteristics included exaggerated facial
expressions, hand gestures, neck movement, verbal
threats, bad tempers, and a tendency toward
starting fights
Almost every person on the show has engaged in
some form of physical or verbal exchange – except
O’Neal, who is guilty only by her association with
the group of women
Two characters, Tami and Kenya, had a fistfight,

STEREOTYPESThe “tragic mulatto” was displayed in show’s three
mixed race cast members – Evelyn, Suzie, and Kesha
As is showcased on BBW, mixed-race people may try
extremely hard to be good or to be exemplary citizens
in order to combat overt or covert negative evaluations
of their parents’ interracial union or their multiracial
heritage.
In the end, they often fail because they set impossible
standards.
Evelyn, the show’s character who has everything
(including a successful business, beauty, and brains) is
an example of this. She is unhappy because of failed
relationships with her best friend, father, and other
people in her life.
O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR
TACTICS
O’Neal endured many complaints
from viewers who wanted her to
take a proactive role in presenting
positive portrayals of women of
color and cleaning up the acts of
her cast members.
She used a variety of strategies to
correct and repair the stereotypes
displayed on the show.
O’Neal’s case is unique in that she did not
personally display the stereotypes on the
show, but was still connected to them because
of her cast members.
In her image repair, O’Neal used bolstering,
transcendence, reducing offensiveness,
minimizing, attacking accusers, compensation,
corrective action and mortification.
O’Neal’s image repair is also unique because
her tactics were mainly used on her own safe
platforms (the show, the reunion, Twitter, and
Facebook) and were openly accessible to those

– ANGRY BLACK WOMAN
Correction of “Angry Black
Woman:”
O’Neal took corrective actions
regarding this stereotype in Episode
3 of Season 4. In this episode, Tami
began anger management.
By sending Tami to a therapist,
O’Neal was able to distinguish herself
from Tami and indicate that she is
not responsible for the cast
member’s actions.
O’Neal also combated this image
using social media, where she posted

TACTICS - BOLSTERING
One way to reduce the offensiveness of an act is
a technique known as bolstering
This tactic involves emphasizing the good
relationships one has with peers, as well as
one’s good deeds.
O’Neal used bolstering by establishing herself
as a ‘good mother’
She played up positive aspects of her personality
Titled herself “Mom of the Year” after arranging for
the band Mindless Behavior to appear at her
daughter’s birthday party
Stated on-air that her “kids come first”
On-air, O’Neal prayed before dinner and tried to

Another way of reducing
offensiveness is transcendence,
which attempts to place the person
in a more favorable context.
O’Neal illustrated transcendence
during an episode in which Tami
and Evelyn went to the doctor for a
mammogram to help raise breast
cancer awareness.
 This act showed that the cast members
were capable of empathizing with one
another in a time of crisis.

O’Neal also illustrated transcendence
on the reunion show, when she reacted
to criticism and promised more
balance.
She stated, “I feel that all these ladies
take responsibility for what their
actions are…and after seeing ourselves
this season, it definitely was a lot more
bad than good.”
This statement hints at mortification,
while also shifting blame (noting that
“All these ladies take responsibility”)

Within the 90 analyzed tweets:
42.2% were retweets
24.44% of the tweets mentioned personal
information
23.33% of tweets were used for self-promotion
through mentions of events, projects, interviews
22.22% of tweets were about new episodes of
Basketball Wives and the reunion shows.
Although only 10% of her tweets in this period
mentioned Basketball Wives, those tweets, along
with the quotations, were the most highly
retweeted and favorited.

The majority of the tweets were happy or upbeat in tone.
O’Neal tweeted quotations of conventional wisdom
She also used her account to link people to her Pinterest and
Instagram sites, and to plug various projects and events connected to
her name.

She tweeted about religious
and spiritual matters and
told her followers to have a

These tactics portray O’Neal

She used the platform to boost
the BBW brand, and to
emphasize that she is not only
the producer of BBW, but also

O’Neal and the cast members
also emphasized the victim
theme and the idea that they are
just ordinary people.
O’Neal also shifted blame by
stating “I feel that all these ladies
[on BBW] take responsibility.”

The tactic of mortification aims
to restore an image by asking
forgiveness
O’Neal openly demonstrated
mortification in Episode 15, when
she visited her pastor.
During the visit, she declared that
she felt horrible and frustrated and
had considered leaving the show.
She added that she could not defend
or stand by concerned about what
others think, particularly in business
meetings.

 O’Neal demonstrated
mortification again in the
reunion show.
During this episode, she
stated that she felt horrible
about a 14-year friendship
that the show has ruined

negative.

People expressed their anger

O’Neal increased during the BBW
“Girl Trip” to Tahiti.
During the trip, a few of the cast
members decided to play a prank
on one of the other women.
O’Neal witnessed both the
planning and execution of the
prank but took no active part.
Her mere presence and
subsequent consent sparked
heated disapproval among her

Another attention-garnering incident was
the wild-eyed, aggressive confrontation
between Tami and Kesha.
During the course of their fight, Tami
confiscated Kesha’s purse until Kesha
would give in to her demands.
O’Neal, seemingly concerned for Kesha’
safety and peace of mind, attempted a
more active role as peacemaker in this
instance.

Despite the spike in
negative comments
surrounding certain
episodes, the vast majority
of comments were neutral
in tone.
Most users who leave
comments on her Facebook
page are fans who simply
wished to connect with the
creator of Basketball Wives
and to enter into a global

The most popular themes after the
reunion episode were fighting (28%),
class (15%), mother (15%), and bullying
(9%).
With the exception of the mother theme,
the topics were very similar before and
after the reunion episode.
The mother theme included the idea that
some of the women were mothers
consumed with petty bickering, fighting,
materialism, and insignificant matters
rather than the welfare of their children

describe O’Neal’s character
before and after the reunion
episode.
Phoniness was the most
common theme mentioned
in the Facebook posts
before and after the reunion
episode with 25% and 24%
of comments, respectively,

21% of comments fell into the
“other” category with 46%
including a negative
undertone and 14% including
a positive undertone.
After the reunion episode, the
number of positive comments
rose, with 29% falling into this
category after it aired.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK TO

Few commenters mentioned the image repair
tactics O’Neal employed on BBW toward the
end of Season 4.
However, the few who did were not impressed
with her efforts.
The audience perceived the “speaking with
pastor” tactic as an attempt to illustrate
O’Neal’s good qualities and “religiousness.”
Fans expressed anger at O’Neal’s constant
lack of involvement or intervention. Viewers
perceived her lack of involvement as
reinforcing negative stereotypes.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK TO
REPAIR TACTICS
In sum, audience responses
on O’Neal’s Facebook and
Twitter pages focused on the
show as a whole, the
individual cast members,
most especially O’Neal, the
show’s creator and executive
producer.
Although many users
commented on O’Neal’s
image, few moved further to

Viewers indicated they would
sincerely like to see more
conflict resolution and healing
in the show’s storylines.
Findings imply that O’Neal
should play a more active role
by highlighting positive content
such as her charitable
endeavors and business
ventures, rather than the
bickering of cast members.
IMPLICATIONS:
Based on these results, it appears that
reality TV and online media provide
viable platforms for a person wanting to
repair his or her image.
However, they must follow traditional
image repair tactics in their use of the
two mediums.
BBW television episodes, Twitter and
Facebook eliminated the middleman and
allowed O’Neal to communicate directly
with her followers.
IMPLICATIONS
Social media outlets allow celebrities to
publish information fast and efficiently
without a gatekeeper
However, celebrities must still follow
traditional crisis management
strategies—such as honesty and
transparency—to retain credibility.
For instance, while O’Neal’s visit to her
pastor and positive posts depicted her in
a positive light, audiences did not find
her believable.
RECAP
O’Neal’s Facebook and Twitter posts were charismatic, religious, and
well written. However, audience members did find these tactics
believable.
Commenters did not notice her preferred themes; instead, they
focused on the negative, stereotypical aspects of the show (“angry
Black woman,” phoniness, and a lack of class)
Viewers focused on O’Neal’s inconsistencies in how she presented
herself, and suggested that she cared more about ratings than BBW’s
content.
While O’Neal stated that she felt bad about the women fighting and
broken friendships, her cast members continued to fight and devise
strategies to bully other cast mates.
PRODUCER SUGGESTIONS
Perceptions and stereotypes often
become the dominant viewpoint
whether they are accurate or not.
Particularly when the cast is
mostly Black and female, it is
important for the show’s writers
and producers to examine their
unconscious or conscious
decisions to select segments that
depict cast members in a negative
and stereotypical manner.
PRODUCER SUGGESTIONS
Members of the cast are successful
businesswomen, mothers, and
independent women.
However, an emphasis on materialism,
sex, stereotypes, and inadequacies often
overshadowed positive messages.
Reality television producers should
include more episodes in which the
women reveal their positive qualities as
entrepreneurs, philanthropists and active
mothers rather than dwelling on their
weaknesses.
LIMITATIONS & FUTURE
RESEARCH
This study looked at a sample of
Facebook, Twitter, and blog posts
and television shows, which limits
its generalizability.
Future studies that build on this
research might focus on how young
women personally identify with the
characters on the show.
An analysis of episodes of the show
may help them to model positive
and negative characteristics about
CONCLUSIONS &
SUGGESTIONS
Portrayals on BBW foster sexist and
negative cultural narratives of Black women
that are hard to erase.
To combat this, educators must create
literacy programs in which students learn
that beauty; materialism and unrealistic
domestic standards are not necessarily a
part of “womanhood.”
Each woman should create her own
standards of “womanhood” based on
personal circumstances such as family life
CONCLUSIONS &
SUGGESTIONS
It is essential to continually analyze and
address perceptions of race and gender
to offer insight and solutions.
Producers and television executives
should take responsibility for the content
of their shows, and be sure to downplay
materialism, sexism, and colorism and
promote unity, intellect, and healing.
Such portrayals might go a long way in
helping uplift women, in general, and
Black women in particular.

  • 1. GUILTY BY ASSOCIATION: AN ANALYSIS OF SHAUNIE O’NEAL’S ONLINE/ON-AIR IMAGE RESTORATION TACTICS Mia Moody, Isla Hamilton-Short, and Kathryn Mitchell
  • 2. SHAUNIE O’NEAL  Ex-wife of NBA player Shaquille O’Neal  Creator and executive producer of VH1 reality-TV show Basketball Wives (BBW)  Due to certain elements of BBW, including archetypal and stereotypical characteristics displayed in episodes, O’Neal was widely criticized by viewers. Although O’Neal did not display these characteristics personally, she was still held responsible due to her prominent role in creation and production of the show.
  • 3. SHAUNIE O’NEAL  In order to repair the damage done to her image by BBW, O’Neal utilized social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, in addition to using her show itself.  O’Neal had varying degrees of success with her attempts at image repair.  This study shows that the tactics O’Neal used, which included bolstering, transcendence, reducing offensiveness, minimizing, attacking accusers, compensation, corrective action, and mortification, can work IF they are authentic and consistent.
  • 4. REALITY TELEVISION OVERVIEW “A genre that places non-actors in dramatic situations with unpredictable outcomes.” Subgenres of reality TV include makeover, dating, court, law enforcement, talent, game, sitcoms, and docudramas Reality TV often includes heroes and villains that build on societal stereotypes and cultural narratives and help propel storylines.
  • 5. REALITY TELEVISION Due to its role as a reality TV show, BBW could influence audience perception of black women in general
  • 6. BASKETBALL WIVES  Reality-TV show created by Shaunie O’Neal  Revolves around the dramatized lives of women with current or former ties to NBA players/teams  Chronicles the lives of the cast members who producers rank in importance based on their closeness to O’Neal, physical attractiveness, social connections, and the perceived importance of their former or present spouse or boyfriend.
  • 7. BASKETBALL WIVES  Due to the negative antics of its multiracial cast, BBW often reinforces negative stereotypes of women of color.  Members of the cast are notorious for their catfights, backstabbing, obscenities, and gossip Actions of the cast members have the potential to influence public perception of women in general, and Black women in particular.
  • 8. COMMON STEREOTYPES AND ARCHETYPES OF WOMEN Sex object: focuses on woman’s sexuality, clothing, appearance, behavior, and uniquely “feminine” aspects Mother:  A “good mother” offers care and protection to her children and is gentle, kind and selfless. She is concerned mainly with the child and his/her physical, psychological, and social development. Other characteristics of the “Mother” archetype may include nagging, shrewish behavior, and scolding.
  • 9. COMMON STEREOTYPES AND ARCHETYPES OF WOMEN Pet: depicts women as mascots and cheerleaders. Women are too weak, naïve, and/or unprepared to handle difficult tasks without a man’s help. Iron maiden: depicts women as excessively strong and overpowering. Women are too powerful or pushy to be effective leaders. Victim: depicts women as representative of society and its individuals; it groups them in with ‘ordinary people.’
  • 10. STEREOTYPICAL/ARCHETYP AL REPRESENTATIONS OF BLACK WOMEN  Though both are often marginalized, Black women are marginalized to a greater extent than White women  Black women are historically depicted at ends of a spectrum: Unintelligent or extremely educated; ambitious or listless; attractive or ugly. Even positive representations can have negative undertones.
  • 11. STEREOTYPICAL/ARCHETYP AL REPRESENTATIONS OF BLACK WOMEN  The ‘independent black woman’ archetype is overachieving and financially successful on one hand, and narcissistic and overbearing on the other. Also shows women as emasculating black males.  Another archetype, the ‘tragic mulatto,’ highlights the idea that mixed- race individuals are unhappy. Presents mixed-race women as wild half-castes who are sexually destructive.
  • 12. STEREOTYPE OF THE “ANGRY BLACK WOMAN”  Depicts Black women as upset and irate, “bitchy,” aggressive, loud, rude, and pushy  Spinoff of Sapphire, a historical character who presents an undesirable depiction of Black women.  Shows Black women berating the Black males in their lives with nasty confrontations and exaggerated body language.  Media often show the wisecracking character with her hands on her hips and her head thrown back as she lets everyone know she is in charge.
  • 13. STEREOTYPE OF THE “ANGRY BLACK WOMAN”  One common thread in all of these stereotypes is the idea that Black women have problems forming positive relationships with men.  Either she is too educated and independent to need or want a man, or she is desperate and lost without him, incapable of going on, and willing to do anything to get or keep him
  • 14. BASKETBALL WIVES Due to BBW’s negative portrayal of women of color, audiences called for cancellation of the show. O’Neal responded to this criticism by using Image Repair Theory to keep her show on the air and to repair her image.  On BBW, a large number of such stereotypes are present, including: Angry Black woman Jezebel Tragic mulatto Victim Mother
  • 15. IMAGE RESTORATION OVERVIEW  Image repair theory: Human beings engage in recurrent patterns of communicative behavior designed to reduce, redress, or avoid damage to their reputation from perceived wrong doing (Burns & Bruner) Approaches that may be taken to present a positive image include: Denial Evading responsibility Reducing offensiveness Corrective action Mortification
  • 16. IMAGE RESTORATION STRATEGIES Utilizing a proactive image repair strategy is more effective in generating positive media coverage Hugh Grant used a proactive strategy to repair his image after being caught with a prostitute He immediately used mortification. He apologized profusely on various talk shows and appeared genuinely sorry. Media could say little negatively about him because he had already said it all. He obtained forgiveness and repaired his image.
  • 17. SOCIAL MEDIA AS A MEDIUM FOR IMAGE REPAIR Social media outlets are a relatively new tool for celebrities to repair their image and connect with audiences O’Neal used social media during the 4th season of BBW, including Facebook and Twitter.
  • 18. SOCIAL MEDIA AS A MEDIUM FOR IMAGE REPAIR Jon & Kate Gosselin, for example, used social media to handle their public divorce. Their attempts show that taking responsibility via social media can have a positive influence on image repair Kate used social media to connect with the public more effectively through personal stories, photographs and short stories. Jon initially used Twitter to place blame on other people, such as Kate and the producers of their reality TV show. Eventually, Jon realized that when he focused on his children, the public was much more receptive to forgiving him.
  • 19. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: RQ1: What cultural narratives and stereotypes emerged in Season 4 of Basketball Wives? RQ2: How does O’Neal address these stereotypes in her social media and episodes of Season 4 of the BBW? RQ3: How did viewers respond to O’Neal’s on-air and online image repair tactics?
  • 20.  To identify stereotypes and cultural narratives of African American women as identified in the review of the literature, Season 4 of BBW was textually analyzed.  To assess O’Neal’s on-air and online image repair tactics, Facebook posts, tweets, blog entries/comments and Season 4 episodes were examined.  The sample included: VH1 blog comments Facebook comments from O’Neal’s timeline Tweets from O’Neal’s Twitter account
  • 21. THE ROLE OF BBW IN PERPETUATING CULTURAL STEREOTYPES Several stereotypes were found to be prominent in season 4: Tragic mulatto Angry Black woman The victim The good mother
  • 22. THE ROLE OF BBW IN PERPETUATING CULTURAL STEREOTYPES Almost all cast members exhibited characteristics of the “angry black woman” stereotype Characteristics included exaggerated facial expressions, hand gestures, neck movement, verbal threats, bad tempers, and a tendency toward starting fights Almost every person on the show has engaged in some form of physical or verbal exchange – except O’Neal, who is guilty only by her association with the group of women Two characters, Tami and Kenya, had a fistfight,

THE ROLE OF BBW IN PERPETUATING CULTURAL STEREOTYPESThe “tragic mulatto” was displayed in show’s three mixed race cast members – Evelyn, Suzie, and Kesha As is showcased on BBW, mixed-race people may try extremely hard to be good or to be exemplary citizens in order to combat overt or covert negative evaluations of their parents’ interracial union or their multiracial heritage. In the end, they often fail because they set impossible standards. Evelyn, the show’s character who has everything (including a successful business, beauty, and brains) is an example of this. She is unhappy because of failed relationships with her best friend, father, and other people in her life.
  • 24. O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR TACTICS O’Neal endured many complaints from viewers who wanted her to take a proactive role in presenting positive portrayals of women of color and cleaning up the acts of her cast members. She used a variety of strategies to correct and repair the stereotypes displayed on the show.
  • 25. O’Neal’s case is unique in that she did not personally display the stereotypes on the show, but was still connected to them because of her cast members. In her image repair, O’Neal used bolstering, transcendence, reducing offensiveness, minimizing, attacking accusers, compensation, corrective action and mortification. O’Neal’s image repair is also unique because her tactics were mainly used on her own safe platforms (the show, the reunion, Twitter, and Facebook) and were openly accessible to those O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR TACTICS
  • 26. O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR TACTICS – ANGRY BLACK WOMAN Correction of “Angry Black Woman:” O’Neal took corrective actions regarding this stereotype in Episode 3 of Season 4. In this episode, Tami began anger management. By sending Tami to a therapist, O’Neal was able to distinguish herself from Tami and indicate that she is not responsible for the cast member’s actions. O’Neal also combated this image using social media, where she posted

O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR TACTICS - BOLSTERING One way to reduce the offensiveness of an act is a technique known as bolstering This tactic involves emphasizing the good relationships one has with peers, as well as one’s good deeds. O’Neal used bolstering by establishing herself as a ‘good mother’ She played up positive aspects of her personality Titled herself “Mom of the Year” after arranging for the band Mindless Behavior to appear at her daughter’s birthday party Stated on-air that her “kids come first” On-air, O’Neal prayed before dinner and tried to

O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR TACTICS - TRANSCENDENCE Another way of reducing offensiveness is transcendence, which attempts to place the person in a more favorable context. O’Neal illustrated transcendence during an episode in which Tami and Evelyn went to the doctor for a mammogram to help raise breast cancer awareness.  This act showed that the cast members were capable of empathizing with one another in a time of crisis.
  • 29. O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR TACTICS - TRANSCENDENCE O’Neal also illustrated transcendence on the reunion show, when she reacted to criticism and promised more balance. She stated, “I feel that all these ladies take responsibility for what their actions are…and after seeing ourselves this season, it definitely was a lot more bad than good.” This statement hints at mortification, while also shifting blame (noting that “All these ladies take responsibility”)
  • 30. O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR TACTICS - FACEBOOK Facebook O’Neal kept communication light- hearted; sparked conversation with frequent questions such as “How is everyone’s day going?” Posted brief updates of what she was doing on a particular day or weekend Periodically mentioned her children Wished her audience a “blessed” or a “fabulous” day Posted famous, inspirational quotes
  • 31. O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR TACTICS - TWITTER Within the 90 analyzed tweets: 42.2% were retweets 24.44% of the tweets mentioned personal information 23.33% of tweets were used for self-promotion through mentions of events, projects, interviews 22.22% of tweets were about new episodes of Basketball Wives and the reunion shows. Although only 10% of her tweets in this period mentioned Basketball Wives, those tweets, along with the quotations, were the most highly retweeted and favorited.
  • 32. O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR TACTICS - TWITTER The majority of the tweets were happy or upbeat in tone. O’Neal tweeted quotations of conventional wisdom She also used her account to link people to her Pinterest and Instagram sites, and to plug various projects and events connected to her name.
  • 33. O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR TACTICS - TWITTER O’Neal used her social media to cast herself as a real person. She tweeted about religious and spiritual matters and told her followers to have a “blessed day.” These tactics portray O’Neal as religious and spiritual and remove her from the negative image she garnered on the show.
  • 34. O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR TACTICS - TWITTER Her tweets helped to secure her image as a businesswoman and regular mother who loved her family. She used the platform to boost the BBW brand, and to emphasize that she is not only the producer of BBW, but also involved in many other joint ventures, charities and special projects.
  • 35. O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR TACTICS - THE VICTIM O’Neal and the cast members also emphasized the victim theme and the idea that they are just ordinary people. O’Neal also shifted blame by stating “I feel that all these ladies [on BBW] take responsibility.”
  • 36. O’NEAL’S IMAGE REPAIR TACTICS - MORTIFICATION The tactic of mortification aims to restore an image by asking forgiveness O’Neal openly demonstrated mortification in Episode 15, when she visited her pastor. During the visit, she declared that she felt horrible and frustrated and had considered leaving the show. She added that she could not defend or stand by concerned about what others think, particularly in business meetings.
  • 37. IMPLICATIONS: Based on these results, it appears that reality TV and online media provide viable platforms for a person wanting to repair his or her image. However, they must follow traditional image repair tactics in their use of the two mediums. BBW television episodes, Twitter and Facebook eliminated the middleman and allowed O’Neal to communicate directly with her followers.

IMPLICATIONS Social media outlets allow celebrities to publish information fast and efficiently without a gatekeeper However, celebrities must still follow traditional crisis management strategies—such as honesty and transparency—to retain credibility. For instance, while O’Neal’s visit to her pastor and positive posts depicted her in a positive light, audiences did not find her believable.

PRODUCER SUGGESTIONS Perceptions and stereotypes often become the dominant viewpoint whether they are accurate or not. Particularly when the cast is mostly Black and female, it is important for the show’s writers and producers to examine their unconscious or conscious decisions to select segments that depict cast members in a negative and stereotypical manner.

PRODUCER SUGGESTIONS Members of the cast are successful businesswomen, mothers, and independent women. However, an emphasis on materialism, sex, stereotypes, and inadequacies often overshadowed positive messages. Reality television producers should include more episodes in which the women reveal their positive qualities as entrepreneurs, philanthropists and active mothers rather than dwelling on their weaknesses.

LIMITATIONS & FUTURE RESEARCH This study looked at a sample of Facebook, Twitter, and blog posts and television shows, which limits its generalizability. Future studies that build on this research might focus on how young women personally identify with the characters on the show. An analysis of episodes of the show may help them to model positive and negative characteristics about

CONCLUSIONS & SUGGESTIONS Portrayals on BBW foster sexist and negative cultural narratives of Black women that are hard to erase. To combat this, educators must create literacy programs in which students learn that beauty; materialism and unrealistic domestic standards are not necessarily a part of “womanhood.” Each woman should create her own standards of “womanhood” based on personal circumstances such as family life

CONCLUSIONS & SUGGESTIONS It is essential to continually analyze and address perceptions of race and gender to offer insight and solutions. Producers and television executives should take responsibility for the content of their shows, and be sure to downplay materialism, sexism, and colorism and promote unity, intellect, and healing. Such portrayals might go a long way in helping uplift women, in general, and Black women in particular.
