3. The publication of an autotype facsimile of the Codex Alexaiulrimis lias been author-
ized by the Trustees of the British Museum from a desire to place tin• text within the
reach of scholars in a form free from the errors of the printing preea ami untouched
by the hand.
The present volume, containing the New Testament and Clementine Epistles, lias
been first issued, as being complete within itself and as baring s <1<•• interest among
biblical students than the text of the Old Testament. The facsimile of the latter,
which forms the first three rolnmeaof the Codex, "ill be forthwith prepared.
Reserving a genera] description of the MS. to 1»• issued with the first volume, the
following particulars may be given, which specially refer to the volume now published
It consists of 144 leaves (including modern leaf for the Table of Contents),
which measure 12] 104. inches. They "ere «unbend, in ink. by Patrick Young,
Librarian to Charles the First, from 28 to 168,' allowing for the loss of twenty-five
leaves at the beginning, as shown by the lacuna in the old Arabic numeration; and
by a more recent hand, from 159 t•• 169, through the Clementine Epistles.
The Arabic numeration above referred to ran through the entire Codex, the
figures being inscribed on the lower corners of the verso side- of the l< but,
owing the cutting of the margins,
,
to it has been partially lost

These lacunae are noted in the margins by Patrick Young.
One leaf after f. 142 (167), containing a portion of the first Clementine Epistle;
and, at the end, probably two leaves containing the latter part of the second Clementine
Epistle.
The Psalms of Solomon, which, as appears from the table at the beginning of the
Codex, originally stood after the Clementine Epistles, but which were not counted
among the canonical books, are also lost.
The ornamental colophon of the Epistle to Philemon, f. 124 (149), has been
cut out.*
The MS. has also received injury at the back, whereby the text of some of the
leaves, and particularly of those at the end of this volume, has suffered partial
mutilation. The margins also were cut in binding the MS. after its arrival in England.
The names of the several Books were originally written as principal titles as well as
colophons; but, by the cutting of the upper margins, the former have, in most
instances, been mutilated or lost.
In the Gospels, the Ammonian sections and Eusebian canons — the latter in red
are noted in the margins.
The are indicated in the margins of SS. Matthew and Mark by the
sign *7;t in those of SS. Luke and John by crosses, with the addition of the numbers
in red. 1 These signs are also accompanied by a horizontal stroke, placed generally
above the first large initial, or, more correctly, above the first letter — e.g. ff. 6b (30b),
9 (33), 12 b (36b), 15 (39) —of the chapter, not infrequently in the first two Gospels,
and more rarely in SS. Luke and John, ff. 22 (46), 28 (52), 41 (65), 43b (67b). An
arrow-head is similarly used, f. 10 (34). When above the large initial, such marks

The modern numeration of chapters is in the handwriting of Patrick Young, who
has also written in the margins of the Clementine Epistles references to the pages
of his edition.
Quire signatures, written in the upper margins, were also added by Patrick Young,
but have Buffered mutilation. Those that remain, ff. 9 (33), 17 (41), 28 (52), 36 (60),
44 (68), 58 (84), (56 (92), 72 (98), 101 (127), 109 (135), are, in some instances,
affixed to the wrong leaves. The quires are actually composed as follows :
— (f. 1,
modern fly-leaf), ff. 2-7, 8-13, 14-19, 20-25, 26-27, 28-35, 36-43, 44-49 (two leaves
wanting), 50-57, 58-65, 66-71, 72-77, 78-83, 84-89, 90-95, 96-101 (three leaves
wanting), 102-107, 108-113, 114-119, 120-125, 126-133. The last eleven leaves,
134-144 (159-169), are in single sheets, having lost their quire-formation by the
injury to the back.
The handwriting of the text from the beginning of St. Luke, exclusive of the
table of chapters, to 1 Corinthians x. 8, ff. 20-95 (44-121), differs from that of the
rest of the MS. The letters are more widely spaced and are a little larger than
elsewhere ; and here Delta with an extended base ( A. ), and Pi with an extended
cross-stroke (), are in general use, while in other parts of the MS. these letters are

5th and 6th lines, in 1 John the 1st and 3rd

The borders and ornamental designs in the colophons are drawn in black ink
relieved with red.

the dark shade. Thus the references to the Eusebian canons on the inner margins
of ff: 2 (26), 3 (27), are indistinct in the facsimile ; and the titles in the upper mar-
gins are not very legible. Similarly, the gall stains which disfigure many of the
leaves at the end of the volume are rendered more opaque in the photograph than
in the original. But the same agency which exaggerates such blemishes also renders
more distinct the faded writing of the text.
