Primary Colors
So with the primary being a year away,
or less depending when this was
forwarded to you, here’s our assessment
of Indiana’s political landscape based on
the best darn gossip, rumor and blatant
political innuendo we can find.
U.S. Senate
It’s pretty common knowledge that both
Todd Rokita and Luke Messer are
both going to run. There are also some
lesser known candidates, but TCS is
hearing that Attorney General Curtis
Hill might seriously be giving some
thought to running for the job. We
know he has hired a campaign manager,
but Hill has also told us in the past that
a good campaign never stands down, so
we will have to do some more digging.
We do know that a lot of Republicans
are worried about an ugly primary fight
between Messer and Rokita. The “good
news” is that the big money Super PACs
that dominated the last election cycle
aren’t likely to show up this cycle since
many of them think there’s not a lot of
daylight between the two.
As far as the Democratic Senatorial
Campaign Committee goes, TCS is
told it's been sending Freedom of
Information requests to state agencies
regarding correspondence between
Messer during his days as a State
Representative. We expect some
similar requests to show up at the
Secretary of State’s Office regarding
Rokita.
Speaking of Democrats, expect
Chairman John Zody to focus all his
attention on getting Joe Donnelly re-
elected. We did some asking about the
other statewide offices, and right now
it’s every man, woman, and intersex for
themselves.

Congressional Contenders
So if Todd and Luke are running for the
U.S. Senate, who’s running for their
jobs? Here’s the current list of
contenders.
4th CD
State Rep. Jim Baird
State Senator Brandt Hershman
(Provided he doesn’t get
appointed to the FCC or some
other D.C. post)
State Senator John Crane
State Senator Randy Head
Former State Rep. Randy Truitt
Former State Rep. Matt
Whetstone
State Rep. Heath VanNatter
State Senator Mike Young

Who else might be getting a
challenger?
State Senator Joe Zakas
State Senator Travis Holdman
(courtesy of Monica “The Hutt”
Boyer)
State Senator Mike Delph
State Rep. Curt Nisly
And while they may not be getting a
primary challenge, we hear former State
Rep. and Lt. Governor candidate
Christina Hale might take on Susan
Brooks in the general election. Word
on the street is that Democrats point to
Angela Demaree’s slight win in
Marion County in 2016 and Trump’s
unpopularity with Hamilton County
Republicans, they may have a shot at
flipping the seat.
And keep an eye on Jackie Walorski,
Larry Bucshon, and Trey
Hollingworth’s seats. Depending on
how things go, the word is they have the
potential to be vulnerable as well.
We’re also hearing that Indy Mayor Joe
Hogsett is thinking about taking on
Eric Holcomb for Governor in 2020.
Oh, and that Secretary of State’s
Race
This is getting interesting. Although he
hasn’t made a formal declaration for any
office, former Pence administration aide
Diego Morales has been making the
Lincoln Day Dinner rounds. We ran
into him in our LPP (Legitimate Political
Pundit) capacity at both the Floyd,
Lawrence Township and Putnam County
Lincoln Day Dinners. We do know he
has been told directly by state party they
are backing Connie Lawson for
Secretary of State. And we are hearing
that election attorney Jim Bopp may
be part of a legal team getting ready to
challenge Lawson’s ballot access,
arguing she is term-limited because of
her 2012 appointment.

A Couple Other Items of Note
TCS hears the state might be getting
sued for guns in the statehouse bill since
it doesn’t cover all state employees. We
also hear there was some division in
Holcomb administration over whether
the bill should have signed it at all.
The Marion County judges that have
campaign committees now have to
dissolve them. Under the new state law
that calls for them to be appointed, the
judicial canons require them to retire
their committees. There’s no word yet
on what they should do with any money
they have in their accounts.
We hear Woody Burton might not be
running for another term.
