In the humanities and social sciences, books are still a preferred format of scholarly communication. OA books have never received as much attention in the OA debate as OA journals and articles. However, the number of titles is growing significantly, funding opportunities are improving and so is the infrastructure for OA books. This session will explore what has been achieved so far and what needs to be done to further improve the sustainability, awareness and attention for OA books. Frank Smith, JSTOR

• The Open Access ebooks have been used in 226 countries/territories
• KU Research also found that institutions located in the global south are
relatively high users of OA books when compared to institutions located
in the US, UK, and Western Europe

• Demand for Open Access content is high
• ”Discovery” sites may make a different in usage
• There’s no clear definition of an Open Access book
• Awareness of Open Access books among faculty, students,

• Funding for Open Access remains uncertain BUT….
