Student cheating and contract cheating continues to involve. This teaching seminar, presented at the University of Sheffield, explores what academics can do about contract cheating, with a particular focus on recent examples. Methods of cheating at all levels, from undergraduate to PhD are explored. The seminar suggests methods that academics within Computer Science and related disciplines can be using to help minimise the problems associated with contract cheating, both when thinking about their own assessment design and when trying to aid the academic community as a whole.

The literature and resources related to contract cheating have developed substantially since the first publication and presentation on this type of academic misconduct in 2006. This set of slides reviews the material from the original presentation, including the statistics collected showing the prevalence of contract cheating. Although the sites and services used have developed, many of the same principles continue to hold. The presentation recommends that increased attention is paid to contract cheating and that students need to be encouraged to support the movement towards academic integrity.

This contract cheating workshop was held as part of a teaching and learning confernence at Sheffield Hallam University and includes several discussion style activities. The areas explored include the type of assessments that students are outsourcing, the pricing of the assessments, the wider issues surrounding contract cheating and the move to work together with students to promote a positive view of academic integrity.

This presentation, delivered as a guest seminar for the Academic Integrity Policies class taken by PhD candidates at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Turkey, provides an overview of how the contract cheating research field has developed since 2006 and current research challenges and opportunities in the field in 2020. It is based on materials used in the Academic Integrity in STEMM module I lead with undergraduate students at Imperial College London, but tailored to meet the needs to the local audience. As the presentation notes, contract cheating research is still in its infancy and care needs to be taken as to how results are interpreted, but there are also many opportunities for new researchers to get involved and to develop local case studies. Most importantly, we need to consider how to promote academic integrity and address contract cheating, as well as how actively incorporate and involve students as partners in this discussion.

Contract cheating is a problem in the engineering discipline, including in areas such as chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and structural engineering. Contract cheating needs to end. That's the warning the UK Government has given to universities. Guidance issued to the sector by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) discusses what to do, but not always how to do it. This presentation, given at University of St. Andrews, delves further into the contract cheating and essay mill minefield. It discusses recent developments that form part of the ongoing move to work with students as partners in academic integrity, but also draws from existing knowledge in a research informed manner. The essay mills are waging their own fight against academic integrity, sometimes with the aid of the media, and examples of this (including the counter-campaign to the International Day of Action against Contract Cheating on Global Ethics Day) are given. The Project Management Triangle, as it relates to contract cheating and essay mills and draws on research findings, is also introduced for the first time here. The urge for education to both work towards making contract cheating less of an option for students, whilst at the same time promoting academic integrity, continues.

This talk explores examples of contract cheating from the computing discipline and beyond. It was originally presented as a teaching and learning seminar at London Metropolitan University. The talk includes an exploration of the prices paid by students when outsourcing work and the quality of work that they obtain. A number of examples are included. What can the past ten years of contract cheating tell us about how to tackle student academic integrity in the future? This keynote presentation, delivered at the Western Australia Forum on Contract Cheating at Curtin University, reviews the history behind students outsourcing their assignments and essays and gained academic credentials that they have not earned. The presentation motivates proactive measures to reduce the impact and reach of contract cheating, including working with students as partners and considering the emerging cheating technologies that essay mills are deploying.
