Food and Snacks Trends 2018
1. Wildly Inventive
Having a mind that constantly conjures up the new.
R EPORT: FOOD AN D SN AC KS TR EN D S
2. “Food is not rational. Food is culture, habit,
craving and identity.”
J o n a t h a n S a f r a n F o e r , a u t h o r o f ‘ E v e r y t h i n g i s I l l u m i n a t e d ’.
3. We often look at where the world is going digitally,
habitually, and culturally, and thereafter see the
effects of how we consume and demand our food to
adapt and keep up.
It is clear to see that as we progress and
evolve, food inadvertently progresses and
evolves with and for us.
4. We all want to enjoy our food, and even
more so, enjoy food that is good for us.
So we took a look at food trends that are creating
this, as well as trends of pure food enjoyment and
innovation in convenience.
7. 1.
EXPERIMENTAL & NEWNESS
As South Africans become more exposed to cultures of
the world via the Internet, TV and travel, they are also
becoming more willing to try new foods and new
experiences. You see a rise in more authentic
local/regional food beyond your typical
Italian/French/American restaurants.
8. W O O LW O R T H S G L O B AL M E N U
• Woolworths launched their global ready-to-
eat and ready-to-cook range mid-2018,
capitalizing on the trends of “experimental”
and “collaboration”.
• Teaming up with renowned chef Liam
Tomlin, Woolies has launched a brand new
range of epicurean delights. The Global
Menu – clearly the name says it all – will
take you on a culinary journey from
starters to dessert. Rich in flavours from
countries like India, Korea and Thailand,
the range boasts a plethora of vegetarian
dishes, while providing a feast for meat-
eaters as well.
• Dishes include Pulled Pork Mac n Cheese,
Kung Pao Chicken, Mozzarella Arancini,
Korean Style Pulled Pork Buns, Chicken
Dumpling Noodles Soup, and Beef
Teriyaki.
9. O N E B O W L M E AL S
• First came ramen, then comes poke bowl.
• One-bowl meal is all the rage right now.
From healthy vegan bowls to sesame
crusted tuna, avocado, veggie and rice
bowls to hot and spicy laksa.
• Some restaurants serving these dishes
include:
– Three Wise Monkeys (CPT)
– Hokey Poke (CPT)
– Downtown Ramen (CPT)
– Yamato (JHB)
– Warm & Glad (JHB)
– The Great Eastern Food Bazaar
(JHB)
– Surf Riders (DBN)
• My prediction, the next bowl craze to hit
town is Vietnamese Beef Pho.
10. TAPA S S T Y L E
• Sharing dishes is common across
Spain, Italy and Asia, where you get
a little taste of every dish on the
table (rather than ordering your own
dish).
• This phenomenon has been on the
rise over the last two years, from
fine dining restaurants like Chef’s
Warehouse to your pop-in-for-a-
quick-bite joints like Lucky Bao and
Cabron Taco Bar to African-inspired
restaurants like Addis in Cape.
11. S P E C I AL I T Y C AF E
• Instead of offering everything from steak to
waffles, certain eateries are rather
becoming the go-to for one key dish. So if
you want a crepe or a good cup of tea, there
are dedicated places that now explore the
palate of a single offering.
• An example is Swan Café in Cape Town, an
authentic Parisian Creperie serving sweet
crepes, savoury galettes and exclusive tea
blends.
• Other places include Jessy’s Waffles
(serves both sweet and savoury, sinful and
gluten-free) and Ka Pa Tee – a dedicated
tea bar that ditches the tea bag and lets the
tea leaves loose.
13. 2.
COLLABORATION
Brands (people and retailer) are coming together to
provide a new offering to consumers – bringing much
excitement and variety to what retailers are already
offering. What is interesting to see is the collaboration
/ mix of two different consumer offerings to provide a
single destination that becomes a one -stop-shop for
most of your needs.
