WHAT IS AN ATOM?
An atom: is the smallest particle of an
element
 It is made up of sub-atomic particles
namely; electrons, protons and neutrons.

3. ELECTRONS
 These are the negatively charged sub-atomic particles.
 They revolve around the nucleus in fixed paths called
orbits/shells.
 The number of electrons equals the number of protons
in a neutral atom.
 They do not contribute to the mass of an atom.

4. PROTONS
 These are positively charged particles of an atom.
 They are found inside the nucleus.
 Together with neutrons, they make the mass of an atom
 They are equal in number with the electrons

5. NEUTRONS
 These are neutral particles of an atom, that is they have no charge.
 They are found inside the nucleus.
 They contribute to the mass of an atom.
