6. The Aethalometer is the instrument most-used in the world for the real-time measurement of aerosol Black
Carbon. The Model AE33 is the culmination of almost 40 years of experience and development. It provides
accurate data with aerosol speciation on time-scales as rapid as 1 second, using our patented DualSpot™
technology and multi-wavelength optical analysis.
The Model AE33 ‘Next Generation’ Aethalometer incorporates scientific and technical advances which offer
improved measurement performance, user features, networking and communications. The ‘Neutral Density
Optics Kit’ provides a validation of the analytical performance that is traceable to fundamental standards.
Built-in test programs offer routine checks of performance and stability. These features provide the Quality
Assurance that is essential for routine monitoring and research use.
The Aethalometer collects and analyzes aerosol particles continuously. The aerosol-laden air stream is
drawn through a spot on a filter tape at a measured flow rate. Simultaneously, the tape is illuminated by
light: and sensitive detectors measure the intensities of light transmitted through an un-exposed portion of
the tape acting as a reference; versus the collecting spot. As optically-absorbing material accumulates on
the spot, the intensity of light transmitted through it, gradually decreases. The decrease in light intensity
from one measurement to the next is interpreted as an increase in the amount of collected material. This
increase amount is divided by the known air-flow volume to calculate the concentration.

7. Total Carbon Analyzer
MODEL TCA08
The Magee Scientific Total Carbon Analyzer, Model TCA08, is a revolutionary new instrument that measures
the Total Carbon (TC) content of suspended aerosol particles in real-time for laboratory research, field work,
and routine air-quality monitoring applications.
The Magee Scientific Total Carbon Analyzer collects the aerosol sample on a quartz-fiber filter and then
uses flash combustion to determine the Total Carbon content. Two identical parallel channels are switched
for sample collection in one, and analysis in the other, to provide continuous data.
The analytical principle is scientifically robust: there are no arbitrary temperature split-point settings, no
switching of atmospheres.
The analytical hardware is mechanically robust and suitable for laboratory use, field projects, or routine air-
quality monitoring applications: the analytical area is constructed entirely of stainless steel.
The instrument contains NO GLASS and requires NO GAS.
The analytical system of the Magee Scientific Total Carbon Analyzer is constructed entirely from stainless
steel, making the instrument rugged, simple and reliable. The analysis uses ambient air as the carrier gas.
This eliminates the need for specialty gas supplies, and greatly simplifies the installation, use, and mainte-
nance of the instrument.
The TCA08 can be used in online mode for continuous, real-time analysis: and offline mode to analyze
previously-collected samples..

9. Multi-Gas Calibrator
*airQrate*
The airQrate multi-gas calibrator provides accurate concentrations of calibration gases such as ozone, sul-
phur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and other gases required.
The airQrate generates gases for zero and span calibration. An automatic multi-point calibration is available
as well. Calibrations may be performed in transfer mode or absolute mode.
The airQrate may either be operated in a laboratory using 230V or in the field using 12V (here, power supply
may be provided by a vehicle, for example). A large touch screen enables easy operation.
Ethernet connectivity and RS-232 interface provide remote operation.
When calibrating in the field, bulky gas cylinders become redundant due to the internal zero air generator,
the permeation ovens, and the optional internal gas cylinders (1l).
Dilution system:This module generates required calibration gas concentrations by using two powerful high-
precision flow controllers.
Gas phase titration (GPT): Ozone is mixed with excess NO where a defined amount of NO oxidises to form
NO2, e.g. NO + O3 → NO2 + O2
Permeation: The permeation oven is Teflon®-coated. Defined calibration gas concentrations are generated
by means of permeation tubes. Up to two permeation ovens may be installed in the airQrate.
Ozone generator: A defined ozone concentration is generated by an UV lamp. The generator provides tem-
perature and pressure control as well as UV light control (available with optional photometer).

COOPER XACT 920
The Xact® 920 system is the latest application of Cooper Environmental’s automated XRF module that al-
lows for analysis of continuously-drawn aqueous samples for user-selected metals.
A measured amount of unknown sample is blended with a known amount of internal standard which is
continuously nebulized, evaporated, and collected onto the filter tape. The liquid sample is aerosolized fa-
cilitating the removal of water and allowed metal salts to be concentrated on the filter tape. This method of
pre-concentration allows detection limits in the low parts per billion (ppb) ranges for elements ranging from
potassium to uranium.
The concentrated deposit is automatically advanced and analyzed by XRF for selected metals as the sub-
sequent sample is collected. Sampling and analysis are performed continuously and simultaneously, except
during the advancement of the tape (~20 sec) and during daily-automated quality assurance checks.
