INTRODUCTION TO
ENVIRONMENTAL SCANNING
The word “Scanning” means to look carefully into or to examine in order to get information. The term
“Environmental Scanning” in Business means to “carefully” analyze the various factors influencing the
business.
Environmental Scanning is the process of gathering information about events and their relationships within an
organization's environments. The basic purpose of environmental scanning is to help leaders analyze and
leverage data regarding events, trends, opportunities and potential threats, hence improving decision making.
WHAT DOES THIS CONCEPT EXACTLY MEAN?
Rather than being
irregular, Environment
Scanning is an ongoing
process. However the
increasingly changing
environment needs to
be captured regularly
to be on track.
