Before long, this number will increase significantly with the delivery
of two new ferries for shipping company Doeksen in Harlingen.
“The ships are to be built by an Australian shipyard, on location in
Vietnam,” says Niek Koops, director of Marine Service Noord.
“These vessels are specifically designed to be LNG fuelled, and
Marine Service Noord supplies the complete mechanical installation
for the LNG fuel systems. We deliver turn-key solutions: from design
up until and including manufacturing and installation. In this par-
ticular case, the modules are being built here in Westerbroek and
then shipped to Vietnam; on arrival they will be assembled under
the supervision of our staff. Once the ferries have been delivered
in Harlingen, the final touch will be done by MSN. We take on the
full project from start to finish, leaving the client to focus on their
core business.”
Expertise
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a fast growing energy market. In order
to comply with environmental legislation and regulations, ship
owners now convert to alternative fuels. Albeit a fossil fuel, LNG is
a much cleaner and therefore better alternative for the shipping
industry compared to diesel and petrol. Marine Service Noord has
built up considerable expertise in the field of LNG, and has various
standards to its name. Koops: “When it comes to the sustainable
properties of LNG as ship fuel, the sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions
will drop by about 90%, and the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions
will be reduced by about 80%. In addition, the lower carbon content
of LNG will enable a 20% to 25% reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2)
emissions in comparison to the traditional ship fuels.” Most new
build cruise ships operate entirely on LNG. MSN is also entering a
new market: the infrastructure of bunker vessels and bunkering
pontoons.”
Coralius
Late last year, LNG bunker tanker Coralius was delivered to her
owner, Sirius Veder Gas (SVG), by the Royal Bodewes Shipyard. “We
carried out engineering, procurement, construction and installation
for this vessel. In a consortium with Titan LNG, we are supplying
the full installation for Europe’s first LNG bunkering pontoon,

including the LNG cargo tanks in collaboration with tank construc-
tion expert Cryovat. Only the hull is constructed elsewhere. The
increased use of LNG has created a high demand for bunker vessels
and bunkering pontoons, a development that will generate a lot of
work for MSN.”
Luxury yacht building
With more than ten years of experience in the luxury yacht building

Hydrogen (H2)
The emergence of hydrogen as an energy vector fits Marine Service
Noord like a glove. Already a few years ago, MSN supplied the
hydrogen installation for the Amsterdam tour boat Nemo H2, for
shipping company Lovers. The experiential knowledge gained from
this class approved installation can now be applied in MSN’s new
and on-going projects.
