5. INTRO
GETTING TO KNOW THE LEGENDARY
- Engineering is the creative application of science,
mathematical methods, and empirical evidence to the
innovation, design, construction, and maintenance of
structures, machines, materials, devices, systems, processes,
and organizations.
6. INTRO
GETTING TO KNOW THE LEGENDARY
The term engineering is derived from the word engineer,
which itself dates back to 1390 when an engine’er (literally, one
who operates an engine) referred to “a constructor of military
engines.” In this context, now obsolete, an “engine” referred to
a military machine, i.e., a mechanical contraption used in war
(for example, a catapult).
7. INTRO
GETTING TO KNOW THE LEGENDARY
The word “engine” itself is of even older origin, ultimately
deriving from the Latin ingenium, and meaning “innate
quality, especially mental power, hence a clever invention.”
8. INTRO
GETTING TO KNOW THE LEGENDARY
Later, as the design of civilian structures, such as bridges and
buildings, matured as a technical discipline, the term civil
engineering entered the lexicon as a way to distinguish
between those specializing in the construction of such non-
military projects and those involved in the discipline of
military engineering
9. GETTING TO KNOW THE LEGENDARYPAST DAYS OF
ENGINEERING
Existed since ancient times, when humans devised inventions
such as wedge, lever, wheel and pulley. Change from nomadic
life (hunter - gatherers)
The Agrarian Society (agriculture)
forms the basis of civilization
cultivate plants - the need for increased food production
domesticate animals - for food and work
build permanent houses in community group
11. BABYLONIAN ENGINEERS
>Familiar with basic arithmetic and algebra computing areas and volumes of land
excavations
>Number system based on 60 instead of 10
>Buildings were constructed using basic engineering principles still used today
>Primitive arches used in hydraulic works
>Bridges were built with stone piers carrying wooden stringers
>Roads were surfaced with a naturally occurring asphalt, a construction system not
used again until the nineteenth century
12. EGYPTIAN ENGINEERS
>Pyramid Age - 2900 B.C and lasts 1000 years
>2,300,000 building stones (2.5 tons each) used to
build the Great >Pyramid of Cheops
>Outstanding examples of engineering skills in land
measurement and building layout -transit and level
>Irrigation system
13. ENGINEERING IN GREECE
>Had its origin in Egypt
>Better known for the intensive development of borrowed ideas
than for creativity and invention
>Use of ideas was retarded because of the belief that
verification and experimentation, which required manual labor,
were only fit for slaves.
>Archimedes water screw
>Crossbow
>Catapult
14. ROMAN ENGINEERING
>Liberally borrowed scientific and engineering knowledge from the
conquered countries for use in warfare and in their public works
>Superior in the application of ideas and techniques
>Hero’s Inventions:
>Gear driven odometer on chariot
>Steam turbine
>Hydraulic clock
>Fire engine
>Aqueducts for water supply
> Sanitary systems
>Engineering principles applies to military tactics
15. These are how engineering started in the past. After the
specializations of each race, comes up the real engineers with their
titles.
According to Stephen Mraz (2009). One move engineers
took back in the mid-1800s to increase their stature in society was to
form professional organizations. Eventually this grew into the
Professional Engineers license in the early to mid-1900s, a way to
ensure only those educated and trained in orthodox engineering
could call themselves engineers. “It was a way to regulate the
profession and to give more respect to real engineers”, says Mraz.

Fazlur Rahman Khan
>Born in Dhaka, Bangladesh and ranks in as the creator
of the modern skyscraper.
>A classically trained structural engineer and architect
who created designs that allowed for the easier
construction of taller buildings.
>Used CAD techniques to design his structures, helping
to solidify the practice into modern civil engineering.
18. Nikola Tesla

>One of the greatest inventors in the 19th
century
>Most known for the building of the Great
Western Railway, that is still operating.
>His impact on industrial engineering was so
great that a university was founded with his
name.
20. Steve Wozniak
POPULAR ENGINEERS OF THE PAST
>Steve Wozniak along with Steve Jobs pioneered
personal computing in the 1970s.
>Software and electronic engineering

almost universally around the world.
>He developed the Apple I alone and was likely
the driving technical mind behind Job's success.
23. Various Sectors;
CONSTRUCTION
Engineering has contributed immensely towards the
development of infrastructure that is crucial to the
sustenance of our civilization. Proper knowledge of
civil engineering has not only enabled us to build
bridges, dams, tunnels, expressways but also figure
out a way to effectively handle traffic congestions,
disasters, and other unfavorable circumstances.
25. Various Sectors;
MEDICINE
When we talk about the progress in medical science, the image
of a biologist or a highly-qualified doctor comes to our mind.
But, you will be surprised to know that engineering and
medical science goes hand in hand with each other to improve
the quality of healthcare. From MRI machines to X-rays and
pacemakers to Glucose Level Monitors - engineering has
contributed more to medical science than we can fathom.
27. Various Sectors;
ENERGY
Electrical engineering is helping us generate a massive
amount of energy by designing and developing power
grids, transformers, commutators, etc. Over the last
decade, power generation through sustainable means such
as solar and wind energy have been made possible due to
the advancements in electrical and other engineering and
technology.
29. Various Sectors;
ENVIRONMENT
Development and deployment of systems that provide
drinking water, that is safe for human consumption is one of
the major contributions of environmental engineering.
Moreover, we also need a mechanism that can reduce
pollution and clean up contaminated water bodies, land, and
sustain our crops and livestock. Thankfully, the pioneers in
environmental engineering are tackling these issues by
coming up with new and innovative solutions to minimize
pollution making our industrial processes environment-
friendly.
