• Was founded in 1976
• Co-founders were Steve Jobs – Steve Woznick and Ronald Wayne
• Initial fund : Wozniak sold his calculator for 500$ and Jobs sold his
car for a couple of hundred dollars – around 1000$
• Company’s location : Job’s garage
• Wozniak was the inventor and producer of computers
• Jobs were good at negotiation and selling things
• They named the company Apple to Beat the Atari company in paper
phone books !

Why People Liked Apple I

• One of the firsts computers that allowed customers to use
a TV as the output screen
• It was fully assembled
• Users needed nothing but a TV to work with that
• It needed less circuits than other computers

• Cheaper ones weren’t fully assembled
• You only were able to see the output on paper
• You had program it’s ROM with some buttons and LED’s
• You had to program it with dotted papers

• Every chip was cost 20$
• Woznick was thinking about selling each chip 40$
• So after selling 50 chips, they could have make profit

But…
• They only had around 1000$ and making 50 chips would have cost around 2000$
• No one gives them any money
• Banks also refused to help

• Jobs made a contract with computer shop to sell 50 complete
computers
• They only could make a prototype chip! Not more ! And in fact, it
didn’t work even!
• Jobs convinced the shop’s manager to give them whole completed
computers with the price of 500$ each
• Shop was allowed to sell each computer 666.66$
• They made 200 units of Apple I and managed to sell all except 25
units
• They made everything by their hands, even the computer box !
• It became the standard to produce a computer

• It brought colors to computers
• Monitor was included
• User didn’t need to buy or do something special to use it
• It had 2 Disk II slots (like floppy disks) – before that a cassette
• Targeted users at home not businesses
• Initial release : 1977
• Last release : 1993
• Around 6 million Apple II were sold
• They sold it with discount to schools and universities and companies

• Initial release : 1980
• Last release : 1985
• Around 75.000 Apple III were sold
• They recalled 15.000 of them
• It had serious problems
• IBM’s first inexpensive PC with MS-DOS introduced in 1981
• In 1984, IBM made $4billion annual revenue from PCs

• Initial release : 1983

• 100.000 Lisa were sold
• A failure because of the price

• A big success
• It was in competition with Microsoft Pc’s and Commodore 64
• They spent at least $5million for TV advertisement
• They offered a plan which customers could test a Macintosh for free
for a day
• The best choice for video industry because of adobe programs
• Price : $2495
• Introduced in 1984

Everything were fine…
• The board fired Steve jobs in 1985 because he believed they should make the Macintosh an alternative for IBM PC.
• In 1989 made first laptop that is fundamental of laptops and wasn’t successful
• In 1991 they made PowerBook the second laptop and it was very successful
• Windows 3.0 was introduced and provided better GUI for PC’s
• Macintosh was too expensive
• They introduced first PDA
• During the absence of Steve jobs, because of poor marketing, apple wasn’t able to sell computers. (some times the computer was
cheaper than a PC with that specifications.

Jobs returns...

• Jobs returned on 1997
• Firstly, he introduced apple store
• Secondly, he made a deal with Microsoft : Microsoft was committed
to invest $150 million and also publish office package for macs for at
least 5 years
• He introduced iMac in 1998. it was a big success and sold 1million
units each year
• He introduced iBook and PowerMac in 1999. they get very popular
• iBook was using wireless LAN and helped this technology to be
known
• Introduced OS X at 2001. It inherited security and stability of Unix
but with a really nice GUI 18

A big decision
• In 2001 , Jobs decided to open retail stores in the USA
• Jobs made this decision to fix the poor marketing problems
• It led to opening 465 stores till 2015!

• In 2001 apple introduced first iPod
• It could save 1000 songs
• It was the biggest success
• Apple sold a lot of iPods that convinced apple to develop iPod series
• In 2005 Jobs said that 76% of the apple’s revenue is from music
devices

• It was a place to sell songs
• After some time they added TV shows and series too
• In 2010 , they celebrated selling 10 billionth song

• Started using aluminum
• Started using Intel processors

• In 2007, Jobs introduced the first smart phone!
• It was a mixture of iPod, Apple TV and Macintosh
• It caused Apple to overtook Microsoft’s stock market value in 2010
• In 2010 Apple introduced iPad, and in the same year stated that
iPads were selling more than iMacs and MacBooks
• Apple sold 6.124.000 units of iPhone in 2008!
