P2P Plans
Week 1 - Wed Accel Focus
Notes/Reflections
- Shin angles. Can they feel that
sensation, so they don’t have to
roll first to get into an
acceleration position
- Some of the lads need to focus on
not popping up after that initial
push.
- Leave out the partner resisted leg
drives or bring it earlier in the
session. Doesn’t flow right where
it is.
- Cone colour game – arms above
are good to go from a bad
position, into a good one.
- Play – coaches want a swerve not
a step. Chance to work on taking
space and being decisive. Make
the decision, carry your speed.
Wall Drill Cue/Focus Areas
Wall Drills & iso holds
- Iso hold – Feel the pressure into
the ground. Pelvis tucked under.
Straight body angle. Stiffness.
- Hold + lift – Feel the sensation in
your glute. Feel that pressure.
Calf-hamstring crush. Toe
snapped up.
- Load + Lift – Hit back down to the
ground. Land in the same spot
with stiffness.
- Double switch – Keep hip position
and don’t pop up. Hip whips down
to the ground.
- Load & Explode – Front hip is
loaded. Hip loads backwards then
punches forward.
Week 2 - Mon Accel Focus
Notes/Reflections
- Some losing a lot of stiffness through
their ankles on the resisted leg drives.
- Getting them to demo (and changing
the person each time) was a big win.
Gets eyes on and gets them to think a
bit more.
- Push that loaded position. COD PS4
controller analogy, keep that finger on
trigger. So stay in a loaded shin angle
position. Some may have to drop their
hip height to facilitate this.
- Key focus on the difference between
MAKE Space – cuts & steps & TAKE
Space – arcs & swerves.
- Vary the Phonebox drill. How active is
the defender? To create more game-
like pictures.
- Keep pushing the decisions – can they
scan and pick up the cues a bit more?
Might need more attentional focus on
this.
Week 2 - Wed Max V. Focus
Notes/Reflections
- Some guys bobbing up and down on
drills, can they keep their hips tall the
whole time
- Could maybe demo the tennis ball
analogy to talk about the free leg hip
striking down which causes the other
leg to pop off the ground
- Small groups worked well, no more
than 5 at a time so I can see
- Might need more emphasis on a stiff
contact. Some are sinking on the drills
- Keep pushing the hammer down
analogy
- Dribble bleed next week to push on
with them getting up to higher speeds
- Builds were over 20m/20m – The GPS
feedback worked very well.
- Posture & Position before power
helped the ‘Just relax’ point
- Decisiveness wins the last drill, take
that space early then arc on the bend
Week 3 - Mon Accel Focus
Notes/Reflections
- Load & Explode into the switches, the technical
side started to drop off – casting out, losing foot
position & angle of attack was up more than
forwards
- Prowler push get more projection, a lot of the guys
are too choppy. Quite a few young lads popping up
meaning they have too much air time and not
putting enough force into the ground
- 1st PERFORM drill might need to progress to more
open square than one area. 1v1 in small area
- Colour chaos – Pat’s shout of loaded to the outside
guys helped. Keeps them ready in that loaded
position.
- Could progress to a half circle with numbers to
make the defensive position a bit more realistic.
Wine glass drill?
- Practice steps off both feet. Lads loads better at
squaring up then arcing. Might need more practice
at how soon they go after the arcs. Based on the
defender and attackers' capabilities.
Week 3 - Wed Max V. Focus
Notes/Reflections
- Wall Max V. Positions – was good to get them to
feel the hip position (hip lock). The analogy of a
puppet having its strings pulled didn’t go over as
well, but might need more explaining.
- Place emphasis on them ‘folding’ their leg up to
recover.
- A walk & March some of the Acad lads focusing
more on pulling the hip up rather than hitting
down. Might need more work there.
- Across the board some guys strike point on ground
contact can get a little too far out in front. The
circle around the feet works nicely but also getting
them to feel the opposite hip pop up could be worth
revisiting.
- Dribbles are getting better but need to differentiate
between those who need to get postures better and
those who need more challenge – i.e. add more
speed or movement challenge – separating lower
body from upper body – sticks to the side etc.
Could add halos or plate punches
Week 5 - Wed Mixed Focus
Notes/Reflections
- Lots of guys still not understanding the need to
switch quickly during the A switch drills.
- Addition of arms now (taking out the poles)
revealed a lot of things around arm action. Lots of
the academy lads still learning to coordinate their
arm action with their leg action.
- Logistics of run rocket and band accels needs
some thinking about. Groups of 3’s worked a bit
better to facilitate rest time more.
- Keep pushing the talk around ‘preserving their shin
angle’ to keep them in that good position to project
out from. Few of the backs especially, need to hit
the ground harder when they attack back.
- Scissor bound – less guys are flicky but some
struggle to keep pushing at the higher speeds.
- Rolling efforts working nicely. How fast can you run
whilst staying relaxed? The GPS feedback is
golden. Some of the forwards a bit over excited
with speeds…or have got much faster!!
- The make space – ball in two hands. Take space –
ball in one hand. Could be a good mental image.
Week 6 - Mon Accel Focus
Notes/Reflections
- Partner Resisted accels a lot of guys losing their
hip position and just dumping their hips out behind
them. Guys getting a bit choppy and not fully
extending through their hips. Need that urgent foot
strike but needs to be big pushes at the same time
– FORCE & FAST.
- Blindside analogy worked well for the step up from
marches to accelerating. Tearing the floor away as
a big focus worked and transferred well into the
resisted accelerations.
- Check the angle of pull for the band resisted
accels. Some guys pulling up rather than matching
the line of projection.
- Could use 1080 next time. Also probably a good
time for run rocket races next week. Pair with
prowler drives and scores on screen? 6 people at a
time?
- The 2v1 to 1+1v1+1 worked better with the
forwards compared to the backs. Could use the
drill as more of a D focused one to push that
projection more. Getting off the line suddenly.
Week 6 - Wed Max V. Focus
Notes/Reflections
- Chat went over well – using the video of the
bodybuilder sprinting and pulling his hamstring got
over the point of ‘Don’t run to your death’ well. This
should hopefully get over the point of relaxation
when they are at the top end speeds.
- A switches with the bounces brought about a lot
more errors but good to see who reverts back to
old movement strategies. Can see the errors come
back as movement challenge goes up. High knee
dribble run should lead nicely into the knee punch
runs down the line.
- Roll – Hold – Cruise – working well. The m >90%
metric didn’t work on the GPS but we’ve reached
the point with the backs where we can do more
contextual stuff at the very high speeds now.
Maybe not races but something around that. Semi
controlled but more perceptually rich.
- Can streamline drills to one or two key bits with
progressions now. But need to keep linking why
those drills help the ‘Whole’ part of sprinting.
Week 7 - Mon Accel Focus
Notes/Reflections
- Spoke about getting the guys to attack from step 1
on resisted accels. They can’t build into the rhythm
of it, they have to attack straight away. Get into
that ‘loaded’ position and then fire out from it.
- 1080 worked as another load device, but needs
someone holding it down to stop it dragging the
box when its on high resistance.
- Probably need to speak to guys about fuller
extensions – finishing their push off a bit more.
- The BW sprints complicated the order a bit. Might
need to go groups of 5 or 6 with 3 RR, 1 1080 & 1-2
bands.
- The drill size and cone set up for the 1v1 was bang
on to get the maximal intent off the line accel and
cut. (10m x 19m). Slight progression would be to
start the D from the corner of the drill.
- Not part of the drill but cueing some of the
deceleration could be beneficial – could integrate
with D coach.
- Ear flicks worked as an incentive for intent, plus
splitting them and keeping them in teams.
Week 7 – Wed Max V. Focus
Notes/Reflections
- Good differentiation of where the backs are
compared to the forwards. The backs can cope
with the rotations in the drills to push the
separation of lower body from upper body. Not sure
the forwards are ready.
- On high knee dribbles & straight leg scissors the
rotations showed up how much they have to slow
down when rotating for the guys who aren’t good
at it compared to those who are.
- High knee dribbles I still think guys settle into a
pace sub-maximally rather than continuing to push
at the late stages of the drill.
- The straight line holds got great outputs but the
addition of the pass certainly stole from their
ability to get in the >95%+ bracket. Need to push
the stick men out further so they don’t slow up as
early.
- Keep driving the Position + Power message as we
let them loose to run full speed.
- Backs could do more contextual stuff but equally
the regular outputs are still going to be beneficial.
Week 8 - Mon Accel Focus
Notes/Reflections
- The prowler load & explodes are a good chance to
slow down the movement and feel the pressure
through the ground.
- I think the guys need to focus more on the foot on
the ground driving. Quite a few are still using their
hip flexors and driving from their knee. An easy
way to see this is when they do it fast are they
flying forwards in their torso. Are their hips and
shoulders travelling forwards in front of CoM?
Those that ‘pull’ from the hip flexor rather than
’push’ from the glutes don’t get much in the way of
movement here.
- Races worked well but some guys losing their form
as they get closer to the finish line. Just lunging
and being off balance.
- Play drill worked ok but rather than a ball pickup
on the turn a pop pass worked better for session
flow.
- Needed to drive the D flying off the line more, it
became a bit passive at times.
Week 8 - Wed Max V. Focus
Notes/Reflections
- Rotations still slowing guys down. They either go
slow to rotate and stay square or struggle with
going offline.
- Interesting that pushing them to go faster and
attack the rotation meant a shift back to a lot more
bad mechanics positions. Need more work here.
- A few guys still need to grasp the concept that
when they switch the action comes from hitting the
ground rather than ‘pulling up’ from the hip flexor.
- The outputs were good in the end in the top speed
efforts, but the general consensus was the lads
were tired and low on energy so the execution of
the end part of the drill wasn’t good enough. It also
took 2 efforts to get anything close to 95%+.
- Could have been the day itself but training
monotony might be setting in with this format so at
some point some more contextual work might
reenergize the lads to attack the drill from rep 1.
- Need to ensure guys practice that rotation on the
pass, rather than just flicking the pass out the
back.
Week 11 - Wed Ball Carry - COD
Notes/Reflections
- Lateral step works but the increased resistance
might be a bit too much by the end of it.
- Guys need to keep working on that change of
speed, its jog in and jog step. Needs to be at 100%
for the step and almost practice going from that
slow ‘lull’ pace to then into a rapid change of feet
with the cut or jab step.
- The 1 v 1 is a good progression along the closed to
open continuum but the second defender as more
live is a nice step up from the statue defender
initially.
- The change of the pad defender’s speed (fly off the
line, back off the line, stay still etc.) adds a bit
more to the drill than it just being a step into a 1v1.
The attack has to adjust their feet and react to if
they fly up or take the space if the D backs off.
Week 12 - Wed
Notes/Reflections
- Xmas tree cones, good without the band now,
allows for more degrees of freedom in a closed
setting. Progression is a closed situation like two
men that they have a gap to get through rather
than just a cone to go left or right with.
- Pad really doesn’t work and steals from the drill on
the 1 v 1 ball carry. Probably should lose that and
just go without or the green band behind the back.
- The scoring system going on the fire call upped the
intensity massively. Doing it close to the wall forces
a hard decel which adds more to the drill.
- The curve into the step popped. Great intent and
that huge entry speed makes the D prone to the
step if the attack can pull it off.
- Having the gainline as a marker is big to show a
winner or loser of the drill.
- Next week progress to a defender coming from
laterally to match that cover line of a back 3 cover
player. Front on is good from a kick return
perspective but that step inside a cover player or
outside arc, is even more realistic.
Ball Carry - COD
Week 13 - Thu
Notes/Reflections
- Lateral walk is really only a warm-up – not sure of
the transfer whereas the reactive step worked
better to get reps but also bring up the vibe.
Starting them in the middle and cutting either side
helps them reorientate better because they can’t
prep the side they are stepping from. A call could
develop into something different, a realistic cue
perhaps? Or react off of each other in pairs.
- Team step worked but challenge to step rather than
just going laterally straight away. Maybe a funnel
they have to run through to constrain it. The med
ball rather than the bag worked a lot better. Offers
a fend option then too.
- The arc progression into the drill is nice as it really
replicates that loose on the edge situation. Need to
change dimensions to get the D to think and attack
to use different options. Overall, a good drill
though. Music added another level to it all. Do that
again next week to keep the energy and intent.
- Interesting bit from training about pass skill at
speed. This could be worked on next block
Ball Carry - COD
Week 15 - Thu
Notes/Reflections
- Lateral steps are more forceful when its done
reactively. But the in pairs mirror version probably
works better. Forgot to add the level change
constraints. A step gauntlet might also work but as
a group W/U going into the session its pitched
right.
- Pass at speed having the defender join the attack
didn’t really work as they bailed too early and often
overran the pass trying to just win the race. For
realism and game specificity I need to go harder at
the lads to keep that. It probably works better with
3 with the 2nd attacker starting on his chest or
something similar. Then keeping the defender in so
the attacker actually has to step might work better.
Get back to medball so he might have to fend and
then go through the poles.
- 2 v 1 worked ok but might need more speed. The
engage is good but could challenge the entry speed
more. Maybe add a trailer so he is being chased.
Speed Skill
Week 16 - Thu
Notes/Reflections
- Hop battle good little activator but will need to
explain the why. Lateral step mirror could do with a
freshen up now. The step gauntlet might be where
we go next.
- Adding the defender with the ball helped but he
needs to be more ‘live’ to force the attacker to
actually step rather than just taking off. The trailer
on his chest works and we get a really good offline
acceleration there, but he may need to be stacked
behind the attacker or even further back so that he
doesn’t overrun the pass.
- 8m is a good distance to challenge the pass skill.
Most make the pass but not all of them get it to the
trailer in stride.
- Final drill is good for different pictures and the
attacker only in the wide channel helps force that
long wide pass. 2 v 1 is often too easy so a 2 v 1 +
1 gives a bit more chance for the D and forces a
bigger decision. The lads do a good job of engaging
then passing but need to pressurize this more so
there's multiple decision-making layers to it.
Speed Skill
Week 17 - Thu
Notes/Reflections
- It seemed that the traditional ball players seem to
do this more effectively than the wingers. It’s
interesting to see how this handicaps those players
who have more raw speed but poorer rotation @
speed capability. The races help massively to
challenge that rotation whilst still going forward.
- Step + Pass gauntlet was ok, the pass component
is good but the steps can be a bit labored, might be
worth opening this up to two attackers and making
the D a bit more live.
- The grading of the pass helped a lot to get the guys
to be mindful of the pass rather than just looping it
out there. Might have to look at the width of pass
though, is it realistic? Might need to check if
distances are too long.
- Pass waves was good to get a vibe at the end, a
good chance to knit the general work to something
quite specific. However, might need to get them to
stay on the lines so they don’t fall off the pass. (It’s
easy for them to do what we don’t want them to do
without a contraint)…running zones???
Speed Skill
Week 18 - Thu
Notes/Reflections
- Good progression on the pole rotations to go with a
ball and introduce the punch – this might need a
heavier plate though for them to get a proper
extension outside their body in rotation but a
decent enough bridge either way.
- Races worked again but still question marks over
quality of the pass. Need to tie the two together
better – Speed as well as the skill not just one or
the other.
- Next week would be good to get plate punches, and
taking the guys offline. S courses and then perhaps
get the donut out for races. Scoreboard in teams on
the whiteboard. Maybe start with that and
transition to an expansive 4 v 2 game to challenge
skills and use the stopwatch to pressurize time to
make sure they attack and take space.
Speed Skill
Week 19 – Wed
Notes/Reflections
- The Frans Bosch exercises didn’t really land but
the use of the donut as a target has potential.
- Guys coming out of the swerves nicely, but the
punches and halos don’t really work with that
offline work.
- The use of music and driving session climate may
have hit a critical mass. Will have to rein that in so
they actually stay focused on the task. Too many
guys not listening or focused on being precise with
their reps. Having to call the whole group in and
bollock them made a difference, but in reality that
was my fault for allowing the session to run to that
extent. Too much of the inmates running the
asylum!
- Contact into bag could be better, this is the trade
off with making them race, the guy doesn’t ride the
contact out of the bag, he just passes pretty much
straight away to try to win the race. This is the
trade off with intent for speed and executing the
skill. Need to find a better solution to get both here.
Speed Skill
Week 20 – Wed
Notes/Reflections
- The low level contact into the bag and getting lots
of reps was a good lead in, then the progression
with the man was good but still lots of guys
offloading too soon.
- Might try the man already wrapped up and see if
they can fight to get an offload next time rather
than them offloading almost before contact.
- Need to stress the greater number of options as the
intensity of this session grows, the ball carry and
pop from the floor wasn’t really happening much.
- The offline speed worked nicely, and the
competition was good with the pass at the end. But
again you end up losing the offload piece as they
want to fly round the cones instead!
- Might be worth looking at a two bag approach and
get the guys on the bag to actively try and disrupt
rather than being passive. Cue the guys that they
have to break the bags first and offload, that
should keep them in a good ball carry position to
then offload rather than pre-empting it before
they’ve even carried.
Ball Carry - Offload
Week 21 – Wed
Notes/Reflections
- Options work Ok but quality of offload might not be
really where we want it. A lot of guys pre-empting
decisions
- The man already wrapped worked quite nicely but
it perhaps doesn’t pair nicely with the speed bit
after. Its more of a repeat reps drill rather than a
starter to a linebreak.
- The two bags offers a more enticing carry option
which is good but they then aren’t pressured on the
offload.
- Having the bag for the races again forced the early
offload so the change to the defender starting with
the ball wrapped up made it competitive and meant
the two guys flying through had work to do to
catch the other group.
- Probably need a change of format or focus as this
block hasn’t quite gone as planned. Need to get the
lads on something where they can apply
themselves well. Maybe take small bits (wrapped
up offload) as a repetition drill to do at the start but
some of these bits aren’t landing.
Ball Carry - Offload
Week 23 – Fri
Notes/Reflections
- Using Pat’s cue of ‘score the try’ helps with them
being long and landing on their chest when
carrying which helped. Their speed up to their feet
varied but it is directly transferable to a rugby
action whilst giving a decent acceleration effort too
which is great.
- The races forced them to ‘score the try’ quickly and
get up off the ground quick as well, just have to
police that clear release so we aren’t enforcing bad
habits.
- The ball pickup is great as a starter but have to
constrain them to be tall and upright rather than
hunched over the ball so it stays realistic. Direct
transfer in the game with a scoop up to a break in
the game two days after the session as well!!
- The two bags means they do have to get tension
and stiffness into the contact but it can at times
force a high carry, have to keep pushing the level
change.
- Next week would be good to do the retreating to
dive on a ball type of carry for Back 3 players.
Ball Carry – Through Contact
Week 24 – Thu
Notes/Reflections
- Short agility primer after horizontal power work.
The drill was simple but guys got lots of
opportunities to express force and accelerate
maximally in a short period of time.
- A nice blend of options being taken, some guys just
gunning it to the corner in a straight drag race,
others wanting to use more deception and step the
defender.
- Would be interesting to see a 15x15 grid whether
this would favour the attacker too much or whether
you would get the same challenge with more entry
speed and a longer accel or if it would be too easy
one way or the other.
- The ball pickup had some great competition and
had a small skill element in picking up the
stationary ball. Could reduce the people in the drill
and go off a reacting bouncing ball. Ball knocked
off of a sausage?? Or a rolled ball? As long as the
serve is consistent!
Ball Carry – Evasion
Week 25 – Fri
Notes/Reflections
- Cut drill really working as a primer and its
simplicity helps regardless of group size. Varying
the distances of the box will be key. 8m x 8m is
very ‘step-y’ but could grow this box size to much
bigger areas to get more entry speed. Having lots
of forwards probably meant 8m was a good entry
point for them but next week the backs could go
over much bigger spaces. Could add a pass or kick
across the grid then as well.
- High ball worked but lots of progression is
available to the backs version. Need the serve to be
better from the forwards so that they truly do get
their eyes up and lose sight of the onrushing
defender.
- The cue of ‘what's the next play?’ helps with the
guys taking the ball at the highest point but
landing in a position where they will get smoked in
a game. They need to match those two skills and
elements of the drill better.
- Kick out game is class. Might be a touch too close
to rugby but for non 23 I don’t mind that.
Non 23 - Mixed
Week 26 – Thu
Notes/Reflections
- High ball allowed for lots of reps but quality was
only average.
- They misunderstood the 2nd man and quite often
tried to catch and pass mid air which is unrealistic
and not something they would do in game. It was
more to take the contact and then find a limb free
to offload. A bag might help with this.
- Line break races worked very well though –
dimensions and pole placement is key but was
skewed quite well so neither the Attacker or
Defender had too much of an advantage.
- Lots of guys getting exposure to the inside-outside
move and the stop & go at high entry speeds. Could
be worth adding the pad for the dive and score to
add another element.
- Most guys taking the outside rather than the hard
cutback which is where I wanted them to spend
more of their time.
Ball Carry - Evasion
Week 27 – Thu
Notes/Reflections
- Better realism on the high ball catch compared to
last week without the extra man. The pressure the
lads were put under was the same but having the
bag trying to drive them out allowed for better leg
drive and surviving which should allow us to
service the breakdown better than catching and
dying on the ball.
- Grubber in behind/picking up the crumbs was ok
but doing it in the barn not many lads wanted to
slide which is likely what they would do in game.
However, lots of them got good reps in under
pressure and having to make decisions on whether
to try and evade the contact or stay in that low
position and get good leg drive.
- Having two bags and gee-ing the defenders up
helped keep the pressure on the attacker retreating
very high which is what we wanted.
- Having the bag holders on their chest was the right
time to allow the attacker to get back but still face
lots of pressure.
- Grid sizes for both was 8m wide – 12m long.
Ball Carry - Contact
Week 29 – Wed
Notes/Reflections
- There is a lot of potential with this to get repeat
exposure to a negative situation and asking the
attacking player to make the right decision to get
out of a bad situation.
- The kick makes a tonne of difference though to
whether the drill truly recreates the situation or
not. Starting the attacker facing the kick allows for
them to turn and lose the picture behind them and
so forces more scanning under pressure when they
do recollect the ball.
- 2nd man is a nice option but might need to vary
how much help he is because quite often the player
just gives him the ball as a get out from the
pressure. In the situation we are trying to recreate
here that might not always be an option.
Ball Carry - Contact
Week 30 – Wed
Notes/Reflections
- Continuation of the kick chase repeat effort work,
as usual the kick is key for the drill to give us what
we want.
- The worm kick drill helps create the situation on a
big field but the bag holders meant it shut down a
true option to carry so the defenders bailed early
from their defence responsibilities.
- I think next time, keep it open but add points
scoring for kick through and gathers to get them to
likely kick. 4 v 3 perhaps? Or 3 v 4?
- Play from around the 22m works. Another one that
might work is a kick return game with an unknown
amount of defenders from that space.
- The driver kick game with the whole group was
very good to elicit high speed and getting the kick
return to be decisive to find weak shoulders. How
can we keep changing the pictures of the kick
chase?
Ball Carry - Contact
Week 31 – Wed
Notes/Reflections
- The high ball catch in pairs is a really good way of
getting the guys lots of reps of high ball catching
and then beating a defender.
- A nice progression to vary the defenders entry
speed, so hes perhaps more prone to getting
stepped. Also as the attacker starts cheating and
not getting off the ground, the cue to really high
point the ball helps the attackers eyes go up and
lose sight of the Defender. This is exactly what we
want so they have to scan ASAP when they have
caught the ball.
- The high ball catch game was hit and miss, a good
level of some competition in the air but in a safe
manner. But the 1 v 1 confused the guys as to
which way to go and who the defender was. I think
it might be better that you have one thrower, two
guys competing for the ball in the air and then two
more guys on the edge of the drill awaiting an
offload. To stop the D rushing up early a rule of a
down up before entering the grid could work.
Ball Carry – High Ball & Evasion
Week 32 – Wed
Notes/Reflections
- Getting lots of reps in high ball which is good, key
will be to challenge more so there is a higher
failure rate. The lack of roof height in the barn
limits this a little.
- Straight on rather than side on is a better set up
than side on like last week.
- D/U helped as did changing the pole distances to
vary up the D picture.
- One thing at the minute that isn’t completely
realistic is the challenge in the air has both guys
coming onto the ball whereas in reality you will
have one coming on to the ball and one going
forward. Managing the risk of injury and the
realism is a tough challenge.
Ball Carry – High Ball & Evasion
Week 33 – Thu
Notes/Reflections
- First of all the lads had a tonne of fun doing this!
- The unopposed finishing drill was great to get them
comfortable going airborne but having some men
and poles to go around added a
COD/maneuverability challenge.
- Entry speeds weren’t that high so will need to add
an element here to get this more realistic. (Without
going too crazy!)
- The 1 0n 1 worked very well for those pictures in
the corner. A good mix of pictures where the
attacker could use different weapons – Gas to the
corner. Stop & go. Sharp inside cut. Attack the
inside corner and ghost to the outside. Even a few
that finished with a dive in the corner!
- Having a try scored like this in the game was
perfect to solidify the P2P to Practice. Despite the
result we need to celebrate the win here to keep
the buy in really high in these sessions.
Ball Carry – Finishing
Week 34 – Thu
Notes/Reflections
- Finishing drill being a little more open allowed for a
more realistic contact point and some more
realistic feet beforehand. Might need to get guys to
drive more through the contact and then dive
rather than the WWE style dive onto the pad.
- Some good pictures where the bag is very wary of
incoming contact meaning the use of feet was a lot
more effective. Need to stress that just because the
crash pads are there it doesn’t mean every rep has
to be a dive. Especially if they’ve used good feet to
create enough space to score already.
- 2nd drill got some great feedback for growing the
drill from the players. Having the 2nd man be the ‘6’
to catch the crumbs is realistic to how they want
the high ball to play out which helps.
- Need to be hotter on the 2nd part only being live
when the ‘6’ has caught the ball as a few guys
going early.
- Some decent pictures shown but a few players
need again to be more decisive with their decision
making in attack. Too many double/triple steps.
Ball Carry – Finishing
Week 35 – Thu
Notes/Reflections
- Finishing drill worked fine with the added high ball
start – didn’t steal from what I wanted and the lads
got through as many reps as they needed. Keeps
the coaches happy that we are getting those reps
in as well.
- 2nd drill the regain in the air ran smoother which
set up the 1 v 1 quite well. Just need to be hotter
on guys going early so it creates a situation where
both sides have a chance. When they jump the gun
it limits the speed exposure and they either have a
walk in try or are tackled man and ball right at the
start.
- The guys were better at being decisive though. The
next progression for the future weeks I think
should be trying to pressurize this. Fast decision
making and decisiveness. Open spaces with
multiple Defenders could be the way to go.
Ball Carry – Finishing
Week 36 – Thu
Notes/Reflections
- Nice progression starting guys on their chest as it
adds some urgency which affects the entry speed
into the finish point. Whereas when that man is
already there, they tended to be a bit choppy and
step-y whereas here they were running hard to the
corner.
- The bag at 50% is about right as you don’t want it
full contact but you want some aerial challenge
when they are about get airborne.
- Biased the corner finish a lot, meaning the cutback
was rarely on. This helped with decisiveness but
maybe a bit 1 dimensional where they already had
what they were doing pre-planned.
- 3v2 Worked nicely after a lot of 1v1/2v1 work
recently. It recreates that short side attack nicely.
Starting on chest was good but to be more realistic
to the movement, might be worth them folding
round from further out. Perhaps a two sided drill
with them on their chest where they choose which
way to fold. You lose the high ball, but get that
quick fold to execute and score.
Ball Carry – Finishing
Week 37 – Thu
Notes/Reflections
- The two sided defenders didn’t really work so it
was easier to stack two defenders on one side –
one high and one low. They got through some good
reps but probably time to change the focus here
again.
- Rodman regain worked nicely and the lack of tap
back and the actual catch stopped the ball going
everywhere. Having them catch and present
allowed for a more consistent trigger for the
defenders and attackers.
- The two sided choice helped provide some
attacking variety, but didn’t really change too much
from my perspective so not sure if this is
necessary next time.
- This drill to flood around certainly challenges their
speed through the hands and spotting the cues of
when defenders turn their shoulders.
Ball Carry – Finishing
Week 38 – Thu
Notes/Reflections
- Contact work seemed to catch the backs off guard
and the appetite wasn’t really there. There are
better ways perhaps to cue that outside to in
position when ball carrying.
- The med ball provided a nice target point but they
didn’t like that contact so I think a bag may be
better next time.
- As they didn’t fancy the contact the intent wasn’t
really there so not sure how much overload there
was. Altogether not a great amount was achieved.
- Is there a better space for this contact based
work? More on field perhaps so the players buy in
more? Or should I regress and chunk the positions
they get into a bit more so it is a bit more broken
down?
Ball Carry – Carry tech.
Week 39 – Mon
Notes/Reflections
- Outside worked really well, nice to add a bit more
contextual work to what is usually the general
speed stimulus.
- Competitive races worked well, just need to keep
tweaking the start positions, ball transfer and
perceptual component whilst keeping it a mostly
fair race.
- Off line speed over those big distances will be good
to progress to less swerves and traffic to get Max
V. % higher. But overall everyone >85% is a good
start considering how much velocity they lose
going round the poles.
Speed
Week 40 – Mon
Notes/Reflections
- The whole group-split group approach worked
quite nicely. This could be a format of delivery that
allows for more individualization in preseason. As
long as you bucket guys effectively, using the
coach man power we have you can have 1 coach
running each station giving those guys who have a
velocity need more exposure to that, whilst the
force need guys do heavier accels or something.
You can then have maybe a stiffness group that
closes that gap of guys who aren’t very reactive.
Speed
Week 41 – Fri
Notes/Reflections
- The lads really wanted to play football here!! But I
think it ticked the fun box for non 23 guys. The
shoulder/knee touch game got the guys going and
might act as a good primer to tackle drills as they
have to get their distances right and shift their
body heights.
- The constraint races had great intent but the
dropping of height high to low body position
probably wasn’t as relevant or specific to get the
hip drop, it just came from hinging at the waist. A
contact component might have achieved this
better, but this is the battle with making it a race -
guys cheat and try to just run through.
- 1v1 was good – this drill is a staple of high speed
change of direction and defensive agility. Carrying
that amount of entry speed is likely an overload of
time and space compared to most defensive
tackles.
Non 23
Week 43 – Mon
Notes/Reflections
- Walks and the basic prep could do with a bit of a
revisit I think just to link the two pieces together
again and close the loop of why they do the drills.
Guys are good at getting hip projection but a fair
bit of smush on ground contact.
- The three split is doable as long as we are tight to
timings and sets the foundation for more
individualization and groupings. This is the
template for preseason.
- Some PB’s on the 1080 which is good at this stage
of the season.
- Prowler races are very stim. Heavy its going to be
hard to push any technical cues when they are
looking across the start line at their competition
rather than thinking about hip projection and what
their shin angle is. But for 4 mins to end the
session with some hype this achieves that aim.
Speed - Accel
Week 43 – Wed
Notes/Reflections
- Dribbles might need a technical refresher as the
technique is a bit spotty here.
- Run and rotate is good to introduce to the forwards
who perhaps haven’t had exposure to this before,
the ball is an easy way of starting this off but the
speeds guys were going at was mixed. The pole on
the back and rotate might be the next way to go.
- Cat and mouse runs achieved what we want, the
COD and swerving put a bit of a cap on the % of
max V the guys were hitting but good to add some
decision making and maneuverability to some
higher speed work.
- Speed gates ended up as a bit of an obstacle
course but its technically differential learning and
the intent was all there. Not good from a data
hygiene or usability of data perspective but with
only using the whiteboard and comparing within
that session it was fine if there were validity and
reliability concerns with the data.
Speed – Max V.
Week 44 – Mon
Notes/Reflections
- Shorter speed session with the whole group.
Should of maybe used waterfall starts more to get
eyes on more people to coach. But 1-45 coach ratio
it was more about getting the guys going than any
educational focus.
- Run and rotate work is coming along – guys having
much larger entry speeds into it, but a lot still
struggling to separate UL from LL. Lots slowing
down to rotate outside the body. Poles could be the
way to go next.

  • 2. Week 1 - Wed Accel Focus Notes/Reflections - Shin angles. Can they feel that sensation, so they don’t have to roll first to get into an acceleration position - Some of the lads need to focus on not popping up after that initial push. - Leave out the partner resisted leg drives or bring it earlier in the session. Doesn’t flow right where it is. - Cone colour game – arms above are good to go from a bad position, into a good one. - Play – coaches want a swerve not a step. Chance to work on taking space and being decisive. Make the decision, carry your speed. Wall Drill Cue/Focus Areas Wall Drills & iso holds - Iso hold – Feel the pressure into the ground. Pelvis tucked under. Straight body angle. Stiffness. - Hold + lift – Feel the sensation in your glute. Feel that pressure. Calf-hamstring crush. Toe snapped up. - Load + Lift – Hit back down to the ground. Land in the same spot with stiffness. - Double switch – Keep hip position and don’t pop up. Hip whips down to the ground. - Load & Explode – Front hip is loaded. Hip loads backwards then punches forward.
  • 3. Week 2 - Mon Accel Focus Notes/Reflections - Some losing a lot of stiffness through their ankles on the resisted leg drives. - Getting them to demo (and changing the person each time) was a big win. Gets eyes on and gets them to think a bit more. - Push that loaded position. COD PS4 controller analogy, keep that finger on trigger. So stay in a loaded shin angle position. Some may have to drop their hip height to facilitate this. - Key focus on the difference between MAKE Space – cuts & steps & TAKE Space – arcs & swerves. - Vary the Phonebox drill. How active is the defender? To create more game- like pictures. - Keep pushing the decisions – can they scan and pick up the cues a bit more? Might need more attentional focus on this.
  • 4. Week 2 - Wed Max V. Focus Notes/Reflections - Some guys bobbing up and down on drills, can they keep their hips tall the whole time - Could maybe demo the tennis ball analogy to talk about the free leg hip striking down which causes the other leg to pop off the ground - Small groups worked well, no more than 5 at a time so I can see - Might need more emphasis on a stiff contact. Some are sinking on the drills - Keep pushing the hammer down analogy - Dribble bleed next week to push on with them getting up to higher speeds - Builds were over 20m/20m – The GPS feedback worked very well. - Posture & Position before power helped the ‘Just relax’ point - Decisiveness wins the last drill, take that space early then arc on the bend
  • 5. Week 3 - Mon Accel Focus Notes/Reflections - Load & Explode into the switches, the technical side started to drop off – casting out, losing foot position & angle of attack was up more than forwards - Prowler push get more projection, a lot of the guys are too choppy. Quite a few young lads popping up meaning they have too much air time and not putting enough force into the ground - 1st PERFORM drill might need to progress to more open square than one area. 1v1 in small area - Colour chaos – Pat’s shout of loaded to the outside guys helped. Keeps them ready in that loaded position. - Could progress to a half circle with numbers to make the defensive position a bit more realistic. Wine glass drill? - Practice steps off both feet. Lads loads better at squaring up then arcing. Might need more practice at how soon they go after the arcs. Based on the defender and attackers' capabilities.
  • 6. Week 3 - Wed Max V. Focus Notes/Reflections - Wall Max V. Positions – was good to get them to feel the hip position (hip lock). The analogy of a puppet having its strings pulled didn’t go over as well, but might need more explaining. - Place emphasis on them ‘folding’ their leg up to recover. - A walk & March some of the Acad lads focusing more on pulling the hip up rather than hitting down. Might need more work there. - Across the board some guys strike point on ground contact can get a little too far out in front. The circle around the feet works nicely but also getting them to feel the opposite hip pop up could be worth revisiting. - Dribbles are getting better but need to differentiate between those who need to get postures better and those who need more challenge – i.e. add more speed or movement challenge – separating lower body from upper body – sticks to the side etc. Could add halos or plate punches
  • 7. Week 5 - Wed Mixed Focus Notes/Reflections - Lots of guys still not understanding the need to switch quickly during the A switch drills. - Addition of arms now (taking out the poles) revealed a lot of things around arm action. Lots of the academy lads still learning to coordinate their arm action with their leg action. - Logistics of run rocket and band accels needs some thinking about. Groups of 3’s worked a bit better to facilitate rest time more. - Keep pushing the talk around ‘preserving their shin angle’ to keep them in that good position to project out from. Few of the backs especially, need to hit the ground harder when they attack back. - Scissor bound – less guys are flicky but some struggle to keep pushing at the higher speeds. - Rolling efforts working nicely. How fast can you run whilst staying relaxed? The GPS feedback is golden. Some of the forwards a bit over excited with speeds…or have got much faster!! - The make space – ball in two hands. Take space – ball in one hand. Could be a good mental image.
  • 8. Week 6 - Mon Accel Focus Notes/Reflections - Partner Resisted accels a lot of guys losing their hip position and just dumping their hips out behind them. Guys getting a bit choppy and not fully extending through their hips. Need that urgent foot strike but needs to be big pushes at the same time – FORCE & FAST. - Blindside analogy worked well for the step up from marches to accelerating. Tearing the floor away as a big focus worked and transferred well into the resisted accelerations. - Check the angle of pull for the band resisted accels. Some guys pulling up rather than matching the line of projection. - Could use 1080 next time. Also probably a good time for run rocket races next week. Pair with prowler drives and scores on screen? 6 people at a time? - The 2v1 to 1+1v1+1 worked better with the forwards compared to the backs. Could use the drill as more of a D focused one to push that projection more. Getting off the line suddenly.
  • 9. Week 6 - Wed Max V. Focus Notes/Reflections - Chat went over well – using the video of the bodybuilder sprinting and pulling his hamstring got over the point of ‘Don’t run to your death’ well. This should hopefully get over the point of relaxation when they are at the top end speeds. - A switches with the bounces brought about a lot more errors but good to see who reverts back to old movement strategies. Can see the errors come back as movement challenge goes up. High knee dribble run should lead nicely into the knee punch runs down the line. - Roll – Hold – Cruise – working well. The m >90% metric didn’t work on the GPS but we’ve reached the point with the backs where we can do more contextual stuff at the very high speeds now. Maybe not races but something around that. Semi controlled but more perceptually rich. - Can streamline drills to one or two key bits with progressions now. But need to keep linking why those drills help the ‘Whole’ part of sprinting.
  • 10. Week 7 - Mon Accel Focus Notes/Reflections - Spoke about getting the guys to attack from step 1 on resisted accels. They can’t build into the rhythm of it, they have to attack straight away. Get into that ‘loaded’ position and then fire out from it. - 1080 worked as another load device, but needs someone holding it down to stop it dragging the box when its on high resistance. - Probably need to speak to guys about fuller extensions – finishing their push off a bit more. - The BW sprints complicated the order a bit. Might need to go groups of 5 or 6 with 3 RR, 1 1080 & 1-2 bands. - The drill size and cone set up for the 1v1 was bang on to get the maximal intent off the line accel and cut. (10m x 19m). Slight progression would be to start the D from the corner of the drill. - Not part of the drill but cueing some of the deceleration could be beneficial – could integrate with D coach. - Ear flicks worked as an incentive for intent, plus splitting them and keeping them in teams.
  • 11. Week 7 – Wed Max V. Focus Notes/Reflections - Good differentiation of where the backs are compared to the forwards. The backs can cope with the rotations in the drills to push the separation of lower body from upper body. Not sure the forwards are ready. - On high knee dribbles & straight leg scissors the rotations showed up how much they have to slow down when rotating for the guys who aren’t good at it compared to those who are. - High knee dribbles I still think guys settle into a pace sub-maximally rather than continuing to push at the late stages of the drill. - The straight line holds got great outputs but the addition of the pass certainly stole from their ability to get in the >95%+ bracket. Need to push the stick men out further so they don’t slow up as early. - Keep driving the Position + Power message as we let them loose to run full speed. - Backs could do more contextual stuff but equally the regular outputs are still going to be beneficial.
  • 12. Week 8 - Mon Accel Focus Notes/Reflections - The prowler load & explodes are a good chance to slow down the movement and feel the pressure through the ground. - I think the guys need to focus more on the foot on the ground driving. Quite a few are still using their hip flexors and driving from their knee. An easy way to see this is when they do it fast are they flying forwards in their torso. Are their hips and shoulders travelling forwards in front of CoM? Those that ‘pull’ from the hip flexor rather than ’push’ from the glutes don’t get much in the way of movement here. - Races worked well but some guys losing their form as they get closer to the finish line. Just lunging and being off balance. - Play drill worked ok but rather than a ball pickup on the turn a pop pass worked better for session flow. - Needed to drive the D flying off the line more, it became a bit passive at times.
  • 13. Week 8 - Wed Max V. Focus Notes/Reflections - Rotations still slowing guys down. They either go slow to rotate and stay square or struggle with going offline. - Interesting that pushing them to go faster and attack the rotation meant a shift back to a lot more bad mechanics positions. Need more work here. - A few guys still need to grasp the concept that when they switch the action comes from hitting the ground rather than ‘pulling up’ from the hip flexor. - The outputs were good in the end in the top speed efforts, but the general consensus was the lads were tired and low on energy so the execution of the end part of the drill wasn’t good enough. It also took 2 efforts to get anything close to 95%+. - Could have been the day itself but training monotony might be setting in with this format so at some point some more contextual work might reenergize the lads to attack the drill from rep 1. - Need to ensure guys practice that rotation on the pass, rather than just flicking the pass out the back.
  • 14. Week 11 - Wed Ball Carry - COD Notes/Reflections - Lateral step works but the increased resistance might be a bit too much by the end of it. - Guys need to keep working on that change of speed, its jog in and jog step. Needs to be at 100% for the step and almost practice going from that slow ‘lull’ pace to then into a rapid change of feet with the cut or jab step. - The 1 v 1 is a good progression along the closed to open continuum but the second defender as more live is a nice step up from the statue defender initially. - The change of the pad defender’s speed (fly off the line, back off the line, stay still etc.) adds a bit more to the drill than it just being a step into a 1v1. The attack has to adjust their feet and react to if they fly up or take the space if the D backs off.
  • 15. Week 12 - Wed Notes/Reflections - Xmas tree cones, good without the band now, allows for more degrees of freedom in a closed setting. Progression is a closed situation like two men that they have a gap to get through rather than just a cone to go left or right with. - Pad really doesn’t work and steals from the drill on the 1 v 1 ball carry. Probably should lose that and just go without or the green band behind the back. - The scoring system going on the fire call upped the intensity massively. Doing it close to the wall forces a hard decel which adds more to the drill. - The curve into the step popped. Great intent and that huge entry speed makes the D prone to the step if the attack can pull it off. - Having the gainline as a marker is big to show a winner or loser of the drill. - Next week progress to a defender coming from laterally to match that cover line of a back 3 cover player. Front on is good from a kick return perspective but that step inside a cover player or outside arc, is even more realistic. Ball Carry - COD
  • 16. Week 13 - Thu Notes/Reflections - Lateral walk is really only a warm-up – not sure of the transfer whereas the reactive step worked better to get reps but also bring up the vibe. Starting them in the middle and cutting either side helps them reorientate better because they can’t prep the side they are stepping from. A call could develop into something different, a realistic cue perhaps? Or react off of each other in pairs. - Team step worked but challenge to step rather than just going laterally straight away. Maybe a funnel they have to run through to constrain it. The med ball rather than the bag worked a lot better. Offers a fend option then too. - The arc progression into the drill is nice as it really replicates that loose on the edge situation. Need to change dimensions to get the D to think and attack to use different options. Overall, a good drill though. Music added another level to it all. Do that again next week to keep the energy and intent. - Interesting bit from training about pass skill at speed. This could be worked on next block Ball Carry - COD
  • 17. Week 15 - Thu Notes/Reflections - Lateral steps are more forceful when its done reactively. But the in pairs mirror version probably works better. Forgot to add the level change constraints. A step gauntlet might also work but as a group W/U going into the session its pitched right. - Pass at speed having the defender join the attack didn’t really work as they bailed too early and often overran the pass trying to just win the race. For realism and game specificity I need to go harder at the lads to keep that. It probably works better with 3 with the 2nd attacker starting on his chest or something similar. Then keeping the defender in so the attacker actually has to step might work better. Get back to medball so he might have to fend and then go through the poles. - 2 v 1 worked ok but might need more speed. The engage is good but could challenge the entry speed more. Maybe add a trailer so he is being chased. Speed Skill
  • 18. Week 16 - Thu Notes/Reflections - Hop battle good little activator but will need to explain the why. Lateral step mirror could do with a freshen up now. The step gauntlet might be where we go next. - Adding the defender with the ball helped but he needs to be more ‘live’ to force the attacker to actually step rather than just taking off. The trailer on his chest works and we get a really good offline acceleration there, but he may need to be stacked behind the attacker or even further back so that he doesn’t overrun the pass. - 8m is a good distance to challenge the pass skill. Most make the pass but not all of them get it to the trailer in stride. - Final drill is good for different pictures and the attacker only in the wide channel helps force that long wide pass. 2 v 1 is often too easy so a 2 v 1 + 1 gives a bit more chance for the D and forces a bigger decision. The lads do a good job of engaging then passing but need to pressurize this more so there's multiple decision-making layers to it. Speed Skill
  • 19. Week 17 - Thu Notes/Reflections - It seemed that the traditional ball players seem to do this more effectively than the wingers. It’s interesting to see how this handicaps those players who have more raw speed but poorer rotation @ speed capability. The races help massively to challenge that rotation whilst still going forward. - Step + Pass gauntlet was ok, the pass component is good but the steps can be a bit labored, might be worth opening this up to two attackers and making the D a bit more live. - The grading of the pass helped a lot to get the guys to be mindful of the pass rather than just looping it out there. Might have to look at the width of pass though, is it realistic? Might need to check if distances are too long. - Pass waves was good to get a vibe at the end, a good chance to knit the general work to something quite specific. However, might need to get them to stay on the lines so they don’t fall off the pass. (It’s easy for them to do what we don’t want them to do without a contraint)…running zones??? Speed Skill
  • 20. Week 18 - Thu Notes/Reflections - Good progression on the pole rotations to go with a ball and introduce the punch – this might need a heavier plate though for them to get a proper extension outside their body in rotation but a decent enough bridge either way. - Races worked again but still question marks over quality of the pass. Need to tie the two together better – Speed as well as the skill not just one or the other. - Next week would be good to get plate punches, and taking the guys offline. S courses and then perhaps get the donut out for races. Scoreboard in teams on the whiteboard. Maybe start with that and transition to an expansive 4 v 2 game to challenge skills and use the stopwatch to pressurize time to make sure they attack and take space. Speed Skill
  • 21. Week 19 – Wed Notes/Reflections - The Frans Bosch exercises didn’t really land but the use of the donut as a target has potential. - Guys coming out of the swerves nicely, but the punches and halos don’t really work with that offline work. - The use of music and driving session climate may have hit a critical mass. Will have to rein that in so they actually stay focused on the task. Too many guys not listening or focused on being precise with their reps. Having to call the whole group in and bollock them made a difference, but in reality that was my fault for allowing the session to run to that extent. Too much of the inmates running the asylum! - Contact into bag could be better, this is the trade off with making them race, the guy doesn’t ride the contact out of the bag, he just passes pretty much straight away to try to win the race. This is the trade off with intent for speed and executing the skill. Need to find a better solution to get both here. Speed Skill
  • 22. Week 20 – Wed Notes/Reflections - The low level contact into the bag and getting lots of reps was a good lead in, then the progression with the man was good but still lots of guys offloading too soon. - Might try the man already wrapped up and see if they can fight to get an offload next time rather than them offloading almost before contact. - Need to stress the greater number of options as the intensity of this session grows, the ball carry and pop from the floor wasn’t really happening much. - The offline speed worked nicely, and the competition was good with the pass at the end. But again you end up losing the offload piece as they want to fly round the cones instead! - Might be worth looking at a two bag approach and get the guys on the bag to actively try and disrupt rather than being passive. Cue the guys that they have to break the bags first and offload, that should keep them in a good ball carry position to then offload rather than pre-empting it before they’ve even carried. Ball Carry - Offload
  • 23. Week 21 – Wed Notes/Reflections - Options work Ok but quality of offload might not be really where we want it. A lot of guys pre-empting decisions - The man already wrapped worked quite nicely but it perhaps doesn’t pair nicely with the speed bit after. Its more of a repeat reps drill rather than a starter to a linebreak. - The two bags offers a more enticing carry option which is good but they then aren’t pressured on the offload. - Having the bag for the races again forced the early offload so the change to the defender starting with the ball wrapped up made it competitive and meant the two guys flying through had work to do to catch the other group. - Probably need a change of format or focus as this block hasn’t quite gone as planned. Need to get the lads on something where they can apply themselves well. Maybe take small bits (wrapped up offload) as a repetition drill to do at the start but some of these bits aren’t landing. Ball Carry - Offload
  • 24. Week 23 – Fri Notes/Reflections - Using Pat’s cue of ‘score the try’ helps with them being long and landing on their chest when carrying which helped. Their speed up to their feet varied but it is directly transferable to a rugby action whilst giving a decent acceleration effort too which is great. - The races forced them to ‘score the try’ quickly and get up off the ground quick as well, just have to police that clear release so we aren’t enforcing bad habits. - The ball pickup is great as a starter but have to constrain them to be tall and upright rather than hunched over the ball so it stays realistic. Direct transfer in the game with a scoop up to a break in the game two days after the session as well!! - The two bags means they do have to get tension and stiffness into the contact but it can at times force a high carry, have to keep pushing the level change. - Next week would be good to do the retreating to dive on a ball type of carry for Back 3 players. Ball Carry – Through Contact
  • 25. Week 24 – Thu Notes/Reflections - Short agility primer after horizontal power work. The drill was simple but guys got lots of opportunities to express force and accelerate maximally in a short period of time. - A nice blend of options being taken, some guys just gunning it to the corner in a straight drag race, others wanting to use more deception and step the defender. - Would be interesting to see a 15x15 grid whether this would favour the attacker too much or whether you would get the same challenge with more entry speed and a longer accel or if it would be too easy one way or the other. - The ball pickup had some great competition and had a small skill element in picking up the stationary ball. Could reduce the people in the drill and go off a reacting bouncing ball. Ball knocked off of a sausage?? Or a rolled ball? As long as the serve is consistent! Ball Carry – Evasion
  • 26. Week 25 – Fri Notes/Reflections - Cut drill really working as a primer and its simplicity helps regardless of group size. Varying the distances of the box will be key. 8m x 8m is very ‘step-y’ but could grow this box size to much bigger areas to get more entry speed. Having lots of forwards probably meant 8m was a good entry point for them but next week the backs could go over much bigger spaces. Could add a pass or kick across the grid then as well. - High ball worked but lots of progression is available to the backs version. Need the serve to be better from the forwards so that they truly do get their eyes up and lose sight of the onrushing defender. - The cue of ‘what's the next play?’ helps with the guys taking the ball at the highest point but landing in a position where they will get smoked in a game. They need to match those two skills and elements of the drill better. - Kick out game is class. Might be a touch too close to rugby but for non 23 I don’t mind that. Non 23 - Mixed
  • 27. Week 26 – Thu Notes/Reflections - High ball allowed for lots of reps but quality was only average. - They misunderstood the 2nd man and quite often tried to catch and pass mid air which is unrealistic and not something they would do in game. It was more to take the contact and then find a limb free to offload. A bag might help with this. - Line break races worked very well though – dimensions and pole placement is key but was skewed quite well so neither the Attacker or Defender had too much of an advantage. - Lots of guys getting exposure to the inside-outside move and the stop & go at high entry speeds. Could be worth adding the pad for the dive and score to add another element. - Most guys taking the outside rather than the hard cutback which is where I wanted them to spend more of their time. Ball Carry - Evasion
  • 28. Week 27 – Thu Notes/Reflections - Better realism on the high ball catch compared to last week without the extra man. The pressure the lads were put under was the same but having the bag trying to drive them out allowed for better leg drive and surviving which should allow us to service the breakdown better than catching and dying on the ball. - Grubber in behind/picking up the crumbs was ok but doing it in the barn not many lads wanted to slide which is likely what they would do in game. However, lots of them got good reps in under pressure and having to make decisions on whether to try and evade the contact or stay in that low position and get good leg drive. - Having two bags and gee-ing the defenders up helped keep the pressure on the attacker retreating very high which is what we wanted. - Having the bag holders on their chest was the right time to allow the attacker to get back but still face lots of pressure. - Grid sizes for both was 8m wide – 12m long. Ball Carry - Contact
  • 29. Week 29 – Wed Notes/Reflections - There is a lot of potential with this to get repeat exposure to a negative situation and asking the attacking player to make the right decision to get out of a bad situation. - The kick makes a tonne of difference though to whether the drill truly recreates the situation or not. Starting the attacker facing the kick allows for them to turn and lose the picture behind them and so forces more scanning under pressure when they do recollect the ball. - 2nd man is a nice option but might need to vary how much help he is because quite often the player just gives him the ball as a get out from the pressure. In the situation we are trying to recreate here that might not always be an option. Ball Carry - Contact
  • 30. Week 30 – Wed Notes/Reflections - Continuation of the kick chase repeat effort work, as usual the kick is key for the drill to give us what we want. - The worm kick drill helps create the situation on a big field but the bag holders meant it shut down a true option to carry so the defenders bailed early from their defence responsibilities. - I think next time, keep it open but add points scoring for kick through and gathers to get them to likely kick. 4 v 3 perhaps? Or 3 v 4? - Play from around the 22m works. Another one that might work is a kick return game with an unknown amount of defenders from that space. - The driver kick game with the whole group was very good to elicit high speed and getting the kick return to be decisive to find weak shoulders. How can we keep changing the pictures of the kick chase? Ball Carry - Contact
  • 31. Week 31 – Wed Notes/Reflections - The high ball catch in pairs is a really good way of getting the guys lots of reps of high ball catching and then beating a defender. - A nice progression to vary the defenders entry speed, so hes perhaps more prone to getting stepped. Also as the attacker starts cheating and not getting off the ground, the cue to really high point the ball helps the attackers eyes go up and lose sight of the Defender. This is exactly what we want so they have to scan ASAP when they have caught the ball. - The high ball catch game was hit and miss, a good level of some competition in the air but in a safe manner. But the 1 v 1 confused the guys as to which way to go and who the defender was. I think it might be better that you have one thrower, two guys competing for the ball in the air and then two more guys on the edge of the drill awaiting an offload. To stop the D rushing up early a rule of a down up before entering the grid could work. Ball Carry – High Ball & Evasion
  • 32. Week 32 – Wed Notes/Reflections - Getting lots of reps in high ball which is good, key will be to challenge more so there is a higher failure rate. The lack of roof height in the barn limits this a little. - Straight on rather than side on is a better set up than side on like last week. - D/U helped as did changing the pole distances to vary up the D picture. - One thing at the minute that isn’t completely realistic is the challenge in the air has both guys coming onto the ball whereas in reality you will have one coming on to the ball and one going forward. Managing the risk of injury and the realism is a tough challenge. Ball Carry – High Ball & Evasion
  • 33. Week 33 – Thu Notes/Reflections - First of all the lads had a tonne of fun doing this! - The unopposed finishing drill was great to get them comfortable going airborne but having some men and poles to go around added a COD/maneuverability challenge. - Entry speeds weren’t that high so will need to add an element here to get this more realistic. (Without going too crazy!) - The 1 0n 1 worked very well for those pictures in the corner. A good mix of pictures where the attacker could use different weapons – Gas to the corner. Stop & go. Sharp inside cut. Attack the inside corner and ghost to the outside. Even a few that finished with a dive in the corner! - Having a try scored like this in the game was perfect to solidify the P2P to Practice. Despite the result we need to celebrate the win here to keep the buy in really high in these sessions. Ball Carry – Finishing
  • 34. Week 34 – Thu Notes/Reflections - Finishing drill being a little more open allowed for a more realistic contact point and some more realistic feet beforehand. Might need to get guys to drive more through the contact and then dive rather than the WWE style dive onto the pad. - Some good pictures where the bag is very wary of incoming contact meaning the use of feet was a lot more effective. Need to stress that just because the crash pads are there it doesn’t mean every rep has to be a dive. Especially if they’ve used good feet to create enough space to score already. - 2nd drill got some great feedback for growing the drill from the players. Having the 2nd man be the ‘6’ to catch the crumbs is realistic to how they want the high ball to play out which helps. - Need to be hotter on the 2nd part only being live when the ‘6’ has caught the ball as a few guys going early. - Some decent pictures shown but a few players need again to be more decisive with their decision making in attack. Too many double/triple steps. Ball Carry – Finishing
  • 35. Week 35 – Thu Notes/Reflections - Finishing drill worked fine with the added high ball start – didn’t steal from what I wanted and the lads got through as many reps as they needed. Keeps the coaches happy that we are getting those reps in as well. - 2nd drill the regain in the air ran smoother which set up the 1 v 1 quite well. Just need to be hotter on guys going early so it creates a situation where both sides have a chance. When they jump the gun it limits the speed exposure and they either have a walk in try or are tackled man and ball right at the start. - The guys were better at being decisive though. The next progression for the future weeks I think should be trying to pressurize this. Fast decision making and decisiveness. Open spaces with multiple Defenders could be the way to go. Ball Carry – Finishing
  • 36. Week 36 – Thu Notes/Reflections - Nice progression starting guys on their chest as it adds some urgency which affects the entry speed into the finish point. Whereas when that man is already there, they tended to be a bit choppy and step-y whereas here they were running hard to the corner. - The bag at 50% is about right as you don’t want it full contact but you want some aerial challenge when they are about get airborne. - Biased the corner finish a lot, meaning the cutback was rarely on. This helped with decisiveness but maybe a bit 1 dimensional where they already had what they were doing pre-planned. - 3v2 Worked nicely after a lot of 1v1/2v1 work recently. It recreates that short side attack nicely. Starting on chest was good but to be more realistic to the movement, might be worth them folding round from further out. Perhaps a two sided drill with them on their chest where they choose which way to fold. You lose the high ball, but get that quick fold to execute and score. Ball Carry – Finishing
  • 37. Week 37 – Thu Notes/Reflections - The two sided defenders didn’t really work so it was easier to stack two defenders on one side – one high and one low. They got through some good reps but probably time to change the focus here again. - Rodman regain worked nicely and the lack of tap back and the actual catch stopped the ball going everywhere. Having them catch and present allowed for a more consistent trigger for the defenders and attackers. - The two sided choice helped provide some attacking variety, but didn’t really change too much from my perspective so not sure if this is necessary next time. - This drill to flood around certainly challenges their speed through the hands and spotting the cues of when defenders turn their shoulders. Ball Carry – Finishing
  • 38. Week 38 – Thu Notes/Reflections - Contact work seemed to catch the backs off guard and the appetite wasn’t really there. There are better ways perhaps to cue that outside to in position when ball carrying. - The med ball provided a nice target point but they didn’t like that contact so I think a bag may be better next time. - As they didn’t fancy the contact the intent wasn’t really there so not sure how much overload there was. Altogether not a great amount was achieved. - Is there a better space for this contact based work? More on field perhaps so the players buy in more? Or should I regress and chunk the positions they get into a bit more so it is a bit more broken down? Ball Carry – Carry tech.
  • 39. Week 39 – Mon Notes/Reflections - Outside worked really well, nice to add a bit more contextual work to what is usually the general speed stimulus. - Competitive races worked well, just need to keep tweaking the start positions, ball transfer and perceptual component whilst keeping it a mostly fair race. - Off line speed over those big distances will be good to progress to less swerves and traffic to get Max V. % higher. But overall everyone >85% is a good start considering how much velocity they lose going round the poles. Speed
  • 40. Week 40 – Mon Notes/Reflections - The whole group-split group approach worked quite nicely. This could be a format of delivery that allows for more individualization in preseason. As long as you bucket guys effectively, using the coach man power we have you can have 1 coach running each station giving those guys who have a velocity need more exposure to that, whilst the force need guys do heavier accels or something. You can then have maybe a stiffness group that closes that gap of guys who aren’t very reactive. Speed
  • 41. Week 41 – Fri Notes/Reflections - The lads really wanted to play football here!! But I think it ticked the fun box for non 23 guys. The shoulder/knee touch game got the guys going and might act as a good primer to tackle drills as they have to get their distances right and shift their body heights. - The constraint races had great intent but the dropping of height high to low body position probably wasn’t as relevant or specific to get the hip drop, it just came from hinging at the waist. A contact component might have achieved this better, but this is the battle with making it a race - guys cheat and try to just run through. - 1v1 was good – this drill is a staple of high speed change of direction and defensive agility. Carrying that amount of entry speed is likely an overload of time and space compared to most defensive tackles. Non 23
  • 42. Week 43 – Mon Notes/Reflections - Walks and the basic prep could do with a bit of a revisit I think just to link the two pieces together again and close the loop of why they do the drills. Guys are good at getting hip projection but a fair bit of smush on ground contact. - The three split is doable as long as we are tight to timings and sets the foundation for more individualization and groupings. This is the template for preseason. - Some PB’s on the 1080 which is good at this stage of the season. - Prowler races are very stim. Heavy its going to be hard to push any technical cues when they are looking across the start line at their competition rather than thinking about hip projection and what their shin angle is. But for 4 mins to end the session with some hype this achieves that aim. Speed - Accel
  • 43. Week 43 – Wed Notes/Reflections - Dribbles might need a technical refresher as the technique is a bit spotty here. - Run and rotate is good to introduce to the forwards who perhaps haven’t had exposure to this before, the ball is an easy way of starting this off but the speeds guys were going at was mixed. The pole on the back and rotate might be the next way to go. - Cat and mouse runs achieved what we want, the COD and swerving put a bit of a cap on the % of max V the guys were hitting but good to add some decision making and maneuverability to some higher speed work. - Speed gates ended up as a bit of an obstacle course but its technically differential learning and the intent was all there. Not good from a data hygiene or usability of data perspective but with only using the whiteboard and comparing within that session it was fine if there were validity and reliability concerns with the data. Speed – Max V.
  • 44. Week 44 – Mon Notes/Reflections - Shorter speed session with the whole group. Should of maybe used waterfall starts more to get eyes on more people to coach. But 1-45 coach ratio it was more about getting the guys going than any educational focus. - Run and rotate work is coming along – guys having much larger entry speeds into it, but a lot still struggling to separate UL from LL. Lots slowing down to rotate outside the body. Poles could be the way to go next. Speed
