About the Artists
“My work is shaped and inspired by the natural beauty of the place I live.” ¹
Jake lives and works in Porthleven Cornwall, his work is inspired by the natural
shapes and textures that surround him in his daily life. The reason why I chose
Jake Boex is because I was immediatley captured by the colours used in his
designs, this has been the main influence for the colour palette in this collection. I
also like the small details on the surfaces of his pottery, you will notice in my
designs that I have used dots and linear drawing styles to reflect this.
“I try to find colour and form in unusual objects and places.” ²
Hilary Stock is a photographer who creates unique artwork from her photos. She uses Cornwall as one of
her main sources of inspiration, having spent a lot of time there has a child. She has created a collection
of artwork called ‘Away’, some of these pieces are inspired by the surfaces and textures within Cornwall’s
coastline. The photo featured on my moodboard is from this collection. I have chosen
this particular photo by Hilary because I feel it captures the natural essence of some of cornwall’s old
villages and walls. I also love the vibrancy of colour as well as the texture within the moss, inspiring my
colour palette.
Benjamin Warner
“I am very interested in surface quality, whether it is crusty impasto brush marks, or
thin scraped back parts of the painting revealing the tooth of the canvas.” ³
Benjamin Warner was born in Cornwall and uses the area as an inspiration for a lot of
his work, he exhibited his first show in Falmouth in 2005.
The reason I have chosen this particular artist is because I love the expressive use of
brush marks, composition and choice of colour in his paintings. Warner is very
interested in surface texture and quality, something I would like to put across with my
collection.
“My works, often with sculptural elements, portray my vision of the natural forms, textures and
colour I have been fortunate enough to observe throughout my life” 4
Trudy studied at Falmouth University and is now living and working as an artist in Cornwall. Her
work will sometimes contain sculptural elements, for example, she will combine artefacts from the
beach with paint to create another dimension to her work. “Trudy unites colour and texture into a
new abstract beauty, capturing the essence of what makes cornwall such a beautiful place to live.” 4
The artwork by Ruane pictured on my moodboard is my favourite of the 4 artworks. There are
many colours within this that have influenced my colour palette.

Coastal Shapes & Surfaces
Coastal Shapes and Surfaces is a collection inspired by the natural forms and textures that are created by
Cornwall’s Coastline as well as objects and artefacts that can be found whilst exploring the coastline. From
the weathered rock surfaces and moss covered walls to the textures of eroded shells upon being tossed
amongst the sea bed.
Across my collection, I have used a range of tools and techniques to try and reflect these elements, some
more prominent then others. At first glance, it may not be obvious what a design is depicting, meaning the
viewer can interpret thier own story or meaning behind the design. This echoes the artists’ that I have
touched on previously, due to the abstract nature of their work.
5. Bulbous Buttercup
Hero Floral 1 - This print is based on the Bulbous Buttercup that can be seen along Cornwall’s coastline. The textural look to the petals
suggests they have been battered and worn out having been splashed by salt water and hit by the cold sea air.
Techniques; lino printing, mark making, and CAD design.

dancing with the plants.
