Haider Beg Khan (‘Hyder Beg Cawn’) was really
responsible for the internal administration of
Oudh during the greater part of Nawab Vizier
Asafud-Daulah’s reign. Appointed about August
1776 to assist the illiterate Chief Minister Hasan
Raza Khan, Haider Beg became the de facto
minister by 1779 on account of his superior
ability.
He came to Calcutta on a mission from the
Nawab of Oudh and reached on 4th

Appointed about August 1776 to assist the illiterate Chief Minister Hasan Raza Khan, Haider Beg became the de facto minister by 1779 on account of his superior ability. He came to Calcutta on a mission from the Nawab of Oudh and reached on 4th February 1787. What area of Calcutta is named after the garden of his temporary residence ?
  • 4. Question 2 • Justice Dwarka Nath Mitra was born in 1833 at Agunsi, an obscure village in the Hooghly District. Dwarka Nath was educated at the Hooghly and Presidency Colleges. • In 1855 he took up serive in the Police Court of Calcutta as an interpreter to the Junior Magistrate, Babu Kisori Chand Mitter. Babu Sambhu Nath Pandit helped him to come up the ladder. His fortunes rose with the opening of the High Court as he later became a Judge there. • He was a trustee of the Hindu Family Annuity Fund and Fellow of the Calcutta University. He maintained several indigent boys at his house in Bhowanipore, whom he used to provide with food, clothing, books ,etc. His descendants still live in Bhowanipore. • A plot of land bearing his name still stands at Bhowanipore however known by a different common name, most probably appropriated by the miscreants he looked after ? • What’s the colloquial name for this plot of land ?
