The largest free amateur beach volleyball competition on the East Coast, from one of New York's most exciting locations, Coney Island. Sponsored by the NYC Parks Department, this citywide championship gives both experienced players and casual novices the opportunity to play in a competitive tournament at a world-famous venue.

  1. Slide 1: NYC Parks & Recreation Citywide Beach Volleyball Tournament July 12 & July 13, 2008
  2. Slide 2: Tournament Overview This year’s Parks Citywide Beach Volleyball Tournament was the largest tournament held on parkland to date, with 220 teams, over 500 players, and 40 active courts. For the first, winners of the Men’s and Women’s Open Division received an automatic berth and paid trip to the Carribean Volleyball Championships. The tournament continues to be the largest, free amateur tournament on the East Coast.
  3. Slide 3: World-Famous Coney Island Coney Island has been home to the Citywide Beach Volleyball Tournament for the last three years. Its active boardwalk amusements and beaches draw an average of 650,000 people on a summer weekend.
  4. Slide 4: The Tournament 11 divisions competed over the two-day tournament: • Men’s / Women’s Open • Men’s / Women’s AA • Men’s / Women’s A • Men’s / Women’s B • Co-Ed 4s • Junior Boys • Junior Girls
  5. Slide 5: The Tournament Players in every division competed in pool games on Saturday, July 12th. The top teams from each pool went on to compete in the playoffs the next day.

  13. Slide 13: Sponsors For the third year in a row, the Citywide Beach Volleyball Tournament was presented by Cushman & Wakefield and by the AVP. Other sponsors on Sponsor Row on the Boardwalk included: • Cabot Cheese • Carribbean Tourism Board • Green Mountain Coffee • Metro • Naked Juice • Snapple • Sports Museum of America • US Army • WKTU
  14. Slide 14: Sponsors Snapple gave out 3200 samples of their new Antioxidant Flavored-Water. Metro was the tournament’s print newspaper partner.
  15. Slide 15: Sponsors Naked Juice gave out 6000 samples; Green Mountain coffee made 1200 cups of coffee in the middle of July!
  16. Slide 16: Sponsors Cabot cheese gave out 200 lbs. of cheese. Sports Museum of America chose the tournament as part of its launch. AVP was onsite as well to promote the AVP Beach Volleyball tourney taking place the next weekend.
  17. Slide 17: Advertising and Marketing Campaign This year’s marketing campaign generated over 349,920,000 impressions:  Bus shelters: 23.8 million  Subway Station Posters: 126 million  Radio PSAs : 54.6 million  Pole Banner Advertising: 144 million  Newspaper advertisements: 1 million
  18. Slide 18: Subway Posters 200 Subway Posters throughout 144 stations were posted citywide.
  19. Slide 19: Bus Shelters 50 bus shelters throughout New York City garnered over 23 million impressions.
  20. Slide 20: Pole Banners 72 pole banners lined Riegelmann Boardwalk on Coney Island for 4 weeks.
  21. Slide 21: Newspaper Ads Two half page and one junior page ad in Metro advertised both events. A fourth half page ad promoted the AVP Tournament exclusively. All ads included all sponsor logos.

  23. Slide 23: Outdoor Banners, Posters, & Postcards Advertising banners were hung in high traffic locations. 200 posters and 50,000 postcards were distributed widely to recreation centers, community boards, nature centers and other locations.
  24. Slide 24: Online Marketing & Outreach Online outreach included listings in the Coney Island Fun Guide, Yahoo upcoming events, NY Volleyball Meet-Up, and KTU’s website, as well as the Parks Department website, among others.
  25. Slide 25: Onsite Signage Water tents were wrapped in volleyball banners including all sponsor logo. Signage was displayed throughout court and venue.
  26. Slide 26: Onsite Signage Over 25 banners with all sponsor logos lined center court, bleachers and fencing.
  27. Slide 27: Press Press outreach to local media resulted in coverage in the New York Sun and listings in The New York Times.
