Summary and Takeaways
• Contactless payment card usage continues to exceed that of mobile NFC wallets, demonstrating that that NFC digital payment applications largely remain a
secondary form-factor and a companion of the physical card.
• Overall user experience is extremely high, although 12% reported a negative experience, which is well aligned with the 16% of respondents that have experienced
having frequent issues.
• The security message is clear, and the vast majority of respondents are confident (at some level) with the security or perceived security that contactless
cards/mobile wallets provide. This demonstrates that fears over contactless skimming has largely been reversed.
• Most respondents are at least somewhat familiar with NFC as a technology. 18% are not familiar, but this is likely driven by significant marketing and branding
exercises done by major OEMs, resulting in NFC technology begin associated with branded wallets – e.g. Apple, Google and Samsung Pay.
• Interestingly, it is some of the highest usage countries which are the least familiar with NFC technology (UK, USA, Japan and Italy) where mobile wallet branding
extends beyond the mobile application, at the POS as well.
• Unsurprisingly the UK is the strongest regions as it relates to the number of respondents that have used a contactless card or NFC mobile wallet. Contactless
infrastructure is well represented with usage extending beyond retail payments, most notably ticketing.
• Cash remains extremely popular in Germany, which explains why usage in the country is low when compared to other European countries.
• Contactless usage is high in the U.S. and this is despite only recently beginning significant contactless migration strategies. The dynamics in the U.S. are different,
when compared to the rest of the world, where contactless mobile wallets were the first to market with the cards coming thereafter. Usage in the U.S. will likely
increase as more contactless cards are issued and public transit authorities roll out open loop acceptance on their respective transportation networks.
• China has the lowest usage, but this market has a significant competitor in QR code variants, most notably WeChat and Alipay.
• Apple and Google Pay remain the most popular mobile payment platforms, although there remain regional variations, such as extremely strong adoption of
Samsung Pay in its home country of South Korea and low Google Pay usage in China.
• Outside of China, the countries experiencing the most frequent issues (Japan, France and South Korea) have very high usage and adoption of both Samsung and
Google Pay, pointing towards issues related to implementation, rather than the NFC technology itself.
• Some Future Expectations:
• Familiarly with NFC technology may decrease as the leading mobile wallet providers continue to expand usage and broaden acceptance.
• Post COVID-19, usage of contactless technologies will accelerate as a “contactless” or “touchless” experiences are demanded across multiple settings.
• As a result, a significant shift is being viewed from one of enabling convenience towards hygiene and safety.
• Perception of security will continue to be strong – this will only be broken by a high-profile compromise.
• Usage in China may further decrease in further favor of QR code variants, unless frequent issues are ironed out.

This demonstrates that fears over contactless skimming has largely been reversed. • Most respondents are at least somewhat familiar with NFC as a technology. 18% are not familiar, but this is likely driven by significant marketing and branding exercises done by major OEMs, resulting in NFC technology begin associated with branded wallets – e.g. Apple, Google and Samsung Pay. • Interestingly, it is some of the highest usage countries which are the least familiar with NFC technology (UK, USA, Japan and Italy) where mobile wallet branding extends beyond the mobile application, at the POS as well. • Unsurprisingly the UK is the strongest regions as it relates to the number of respondents that have used a contactless card or NFC mobile wallet. Contactless infrastructure is well represented with usage extending beyond retail payments, most notably ticketing. • Cash remains extremely popular in Germany, which explains why usage in the country is low when compared to other European countries. • Contactless usage is high in the U.S. and this is despite only recently beginning significant contactless migration strategies. The dynamics in the U.S. are different, when compared to the rest of the world, where contactless mobile wallets were the first to market with the cards coming thereafter. Usage in the U.S. will likely increase as more contactless cards are issued and public transit authorities roll out open loop acceptance on their respective transportation networks. • China has the lowest usage, but this market has a significant competitor in QR code variants, most notably WeChat and Alipay. • Apple and Google Pay remain the most popular mobile payment platforms, although there remain regional variations, such as extremely strong adoption of Samsung Pay in its home country of South Korea and low Google Pay usage in China. • Outside of China, the countries experiencing the most frequent issues (Japan, France and South Korea) have very high usage and adoption of both Samsung and Google Pay, pointing towards issues related to implementation, rather than the NFC technology itself. • Some Future Expectations: • Familiarly with NFC technology may decrease as the leading mobile wallet providers continue to expand usage and broaden acceptance.
