Nutrition in
plants
Why do
living
organism
needs food?
Living organism need food to
Grow
Repair the damaged parts of bodies.
Get energy and carry out life process.
Define Nutrition ?
What are the various
components of food?
•The various
components of food are
Carbohydrate, Proteins,
Fats, Vitamins and
Minerals. These are
also called as Nutrition.
What are
the two
process by
which plant
obtain
Food ?
Nutrition
Respiration
Explain in
brief about
the
autotrophic
mode of
nutrition?
•Green plants prepare their own
food by using carbon dioxide from
air, water from soil, energy from
Sunlight.
•Plants are called as Autotrophs.
•The mode of nutrition where
green plants prepare food from
simple substances is called as
autotrophic mode of nutrition.
•auto means self,
•trophism means feeding.
What is a chloroplast ?
• The cells of green leaves and
young plants contain
numerous green structures
called as chloroplast.
• Chloroplast are green in
colour due to the presence of
green pigment called
chlorophyll.
• The chlorophyll traps energy
from sunlight.
Define Stomata ?
• Leaves take in carbon dioxide
from air through tiny pores
called stomata.
• Pores are located on the
underside of leaves. Stomata
are surrounded by guard
cells.
• Guard calls helps to open /
close the stomata.
How plants
absorb
water from
plants?
Water is absorbed from soil by root
hairs present in roots.
Water and Minerals absorbed by
plants are transported to leaves
through xylem vessels.
Xylem vessels are pipe like structure
that run thorough the root, stem,
branches, and leaves.
What are vascular tissues?
• The tissues which transport
water, minerals, food to
different pants of plant are
called Vascular tissues.
• There are two types of
vascular Issues called as
xylem and phloem.
Define Xylem and Phloem?
The tissues that carry
water and minerals
from root to leaves of
plant is called xylem.
Xylem are made up of
dead tissues.
The tissues which carry
food from leaves to
other part of plant is
called as Phloem.
Phloem is made up of
living tissues, arranged
one over the other.
All the parts of plant like
root, stem, branches
leaves contain these
vascular tissues called
as xylem and phloem.
xylem and phloem are
made up of tubular cells
arranged end to end.
Write in detail about
photosynthesis?
• photo means light;
• synthesis means combination of
Substances.
• During Photosynthesis, a chemical
reaction takes place in green parts
of the plant. That is in chloroplast.
In this process, carbon dioxide and
water are converted into food in
the form of glucose and oxygen is
released.
Write the
importance of
Photosynthesis ?
• Photosynthesis utilizes the non living component
of environment such as water, carbon dioxide in
the presence of sunlight to form food.
• Food synthesized by green leaves is transported
to various parts of the plant through stem.
• In most of the plants, glucose is converted into
Starch and stored in leaves, roots, stem etc.
• Food that plants make is used not only by
themselves but also by the entire world of living
organism
• Photosynthesis helps to maintain the balance
between oxygen and carbon dioxide level in the
atmosphere.
• There fore in absence of Photosynthesis, life is
Impossible.
What are the
conditions
necessary for
photosynthesis?
There are the four conditions required
for the process of photosynthesis.
Availability of Carbon dioxide.
Availability of water.
Presence of chlorophyll
Presence of
light.
Besides
carbohydrates,
what are the
other
component of
food?
Carbohydrates that plant synthesize during Photosynthesis
are made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
They are used to synthesize other component of food
such as protein and fats.
Proteins contain nitrogen.
Air contains large amount of nitrogen, but plants cannot
absorb Nitrogen directly.
Soil contains certain bacteria called Rhizobium, it converts
atmospheric nitrogen into water soluble compounds.
Farmers add fertilizers rich in nitrogen to the soil, these
are absorbed by plants.
What is
Heterotrophic
nutrition ?
• Animals, non green plants such as
fungi and bacteria they cannot
prepare their own food.
• They depend directly or indirectly on
green plant for their nutrition,
• This type of nutrition is called as
Heterotrophic nutrition
• Animals and non green plants are
known as heterotrophs.
• Example for heterotrophs are
Herbivores and Carnivores.
What are Parasites ?
• Some non green plants live in
or on other living organism,
derive their food from them.
• Ex: Dodder is plant that suck
food from another plant using
root like structures such plants
are called Parasites.
• The plant from which a parasite
gets its food is called as host.
What are
Partial
parasites?
Some plants they take in part of
nutrient from host plant, they are
called as partial parasite
Ex Mistetoe plant, grow on trees such
as Mango or Mahua have green leaves,
and they prepare their own food.
But they take water and minerals from
host plants. These are called as partial
parasite.
Write a short note on Insectivores
plant?• Certain plants grow in soil less in nitrogen
content, so they consume insects to get
nitrogen supplement from them. These plants
are known as Insectivores plants.
• Ex: Venus flytrap and Pitcher plant.
• In the Pitcher plant, leaves are modified into
pitcher like structure with lid (sac)
• Inside the Pitcher, there are hair like structure
pointing downwards.
• when the insect enters in the pitcher plant the
lid closes and insect is trapped inside the plant.
• The plant now secretes the digestive juices to
digest the insect.
Define
Saprophytic
mode of
Nutrition ?
Some non green plants such as bacteria, fungi
live on dead and decaying plants and animals.
They secrete digestive juices on dead and
decaying matter.
This convert solid matter into liquid.
The method of getting nutrient from dead and
decaying matter in the form of liquid is known
Saprophytic nutrition.
How do fungi grow?
• spores of fungi are floating
in air.
• They start to germinate
when they come in contact
with wet and warm things.
• Fungi grow in shoes, clothes,
pickles, and any articles in
Warm and humid weather.
Define Symbiosis?
• Interaction between two
different living organism living in
mutual relationship and gets
benefit from each other is called
as Symbiosis.
• Ex: Algae and Fungi living in
mutual relationship is Lichens.
• Algae is an autotroph and fungi is
a saprophyte.
• Algae prepares its food and
supply to fungus.
• Fungi supplies water and
minerals to the cells of algae.
How the
Nutrients
in the
forest soil
are
replenished?
The amount of nutrients in the
forest soil keeps on decreasing,
as the plants absorb them and
use it for their growth.
These nutrients are naturally
replenished by the decaying of
dead plants and animals.
How the farmers replenish the nutrients in
farm soil?
The farmers add nutrients
to the soil in the form of
manures and fertilizers.
The manure contain mostly
Nitrogen, Potassium, and
Phosphorus.
The farmers know which
nutrient to be added for
the growth of plants.
What is the role of leguminous plant?
• Most of the crops, require lot of nitrogen to make proteins.
• After the crops is harvested, soil become deficient in
Nitrogen.
• Rhizobium bacteria can take atmospheric nitrogen and
convert it into a soluble form that plants can absorb.
• Rhizobium cannot make its own food.
• Rhizobium lives in the roots of leguminous plant such as
peas, moong, gram.
• Rhizobium exhibit a symbiotic relationship with the
leguminous plants.
• Rhizobium provides Nitrogen to the plant and in turn it get
food from them.
• Farmers will not add nitrogen fertilizers to the soil when
leguminous plants are grown.

  • 12. Write in detail about photosynthesis? • photo means light; • synthesis means combination of Substances. • During Photosynthesis, a chemical reaction takes place in green parts of the plant. That is in chloroplast. In this process, carbon dioxide and water are converted into food in the form of glucose and oxygen is released.
  • 13. Write the importance of Photosynthesis ? • Photosynthesis utilizes the non living component of environment such as water, carbon dioxide in the presence of sunlight to form food. • Food synthesized by green leaves is transported to various parts of the plant through stem. • In most of the plants, glucose is converted into Starch and stored in leaves, roots, stem etc. • Food that plants make is used not only by themselves but also by the entire world of living organism • Photosynthesis helps to maintain the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. • There fore in absence of Photosynthesis, life is Impossible.
  • 14. What are the conditions necessary for photosynthesis? There are the four conditions required for the process of photosynthesis. Availability of Carbon dioxide. Availability of water. Presence of chlorophyll Presence of light.
  • 15. Besides carbohydrates, what are the other component of food? Carbohydrates that plant synthesize during Photosynthesis are made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. They are used to synthesize other component of food such as protein and fats. Proteins contain nitrogen. Air contains large amount of nitrogen, but plants cannot absorb Nitrogen directly. Soil contains certain bacteria called Rhizobium, it converts atmospheric nitrogen into water soluble compounds. Farmers add fertilizers rich in nitrogen to the soil, these are absorbed by plants.
  • 16. What is Heterotrophic nutrition ? • Animals, non green plants such as fungi and bacteria they cannot prepare their own food. • They depend directly or indirectly on green plant for their nutrition, • This type of nutrition is called as Heterotrophic nutrition • Animals and non green plants are known as heterotrophs. • Example for heterotrophs are Herbivores and Carnivores.
  • 17. What are Parasites ? • Some non green plants live in or on other living organism, derive their food from them. • Ex: Dodder is plant that suck food from another plant using root like structures such plants are called Parasites. • The plant from which a parasite gets its food is called as host.
  • 18. What are Partial parasites? Some plants they take in part of nutrient from host plant, they are called as partial parasite Ex Mistetoe plant, grow on trees such as Mango or Mahua have green leaves, and they prepare their own food. But they take water and minerals from host plants. These are called as partial parasite.
  • 19. Write a short note on Insectivores plant?• Certain plants grow in soil less in nitrogen content, so they consume insects to get nitrogen supplement from them. These plants are known as Insectivores plants. • Ex: Venus flytrap and Pitcher plant. • In the Pitcher plant, leaves are modified into pitcher like structure with lid (sac) • Inside the Pitcher, there are hair like structure pointing downwards. • when the insect enters in the pitcher plant the lid closes and insect is trapped inside the plant. • The plant now secretes the digestive juices to digest the insect.
  • 20. Define Saprophytic mode of Nutrition ? Some non green plants such as bacteria, fungi live on dead and decaying plants and animals. They secrete digestive juices on dead and decaying matter. This convert solid matter into liquid. The method of getting nutrient from dead and decaying matter in the form of liquid is known Saprophytic nutrition.
  • 21. How do fungi grow? • spores of fungi are floating in air. • They start to germinate when they come in contact with wet and warm things. • Fungi grow in shoes, clothes, pickles, and any articles in Warm and humid weather.
  • 22. Define Symbiosis? • Interaction between two different living organism living in mutual relationship and gets benefit from each other is called as Symbiosis. • Ex: Algae and Fungi living in mutual relationship is Lichens. • Algae is an autotroph and fungi is a saprophyte. • Algae prepares its food and supply to fungus. • Fungi supplies water and minerals to the cells of algae.
  • 23. How the Nutrients in the forest soil are replenished? The amount of nutrients in the forest soil keeps on decreasing, as the plants absorb them and use it for their growth. These nutrients are naturally replenished by the decaying of dead plants and animals.
  • 24. How the farmers replenish the nutrients in farm soil? The farmers add nutrients to the soil in the form of manures and fertilizers. The manure contain mostly Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorus. The farmers know which nutrient to be added for the growth of plants.
  • 25. What is the role of leguminous plant? • Most of the crops, require lot of nitrogen to make proteins. • After the crops is harvested, soil become deficient in Nitrogen. • Rhizobium bacteria can take atmospheric nitrogen and convert it into a soluble form that plants can absorb. • Rhizobium cannot make its own food. • Rhizobium lives in the roots of leguminous plant such as peas, moong, gram. • Rhizobium exhibit a symbiotic relationship with the leguminous plants. • Rhizobium provides Nitrogen to the plant and in turn it get food from them. • Farmers will not add nitrogen fertilizers to the soil when leguminous plants are grown.
