President Rutherford B. Hayes
By Megan Whitten
Early Life
Rutherford B. Hayes was born on
October 4th, 1822 in Delaware
Ohio. His parents names were
Sophia Birchard Hayes, and
Rutherford Hayes Sr. who died
before his son was born. His
father worked as a farmer, and
his mother was a stay at home
mother.
Hayes was had three other
siblings, Lorenzo Hayes, who
drowned in a millpond when he
was nine, Fanny Arabella, and
Sarah Sophia Hayes.
Education
Hayes attended many different
schools until finally graduating
from Kenyon College as his
class’s valedictorian studying
law. He then went to Harvard
University to graduate with a law
degree.
Early Career
Hayes practiced law in Lower
Sandusky, OH, in 1845. Then
moved 4 years later to Cincinnati
in 1849.
He then got better with law and
was drawn to the Republican
Party.
Marriage and Children
Rutherford B. Hayes married
Lucy Ware Webb on December
30, 1852.
Lucy and Rutherford had six
children. Webb, Scott Russell,
Birchard Austin, Manning Force,
and Fanny Hayes.
Civil War
Before Hayes became president, he
fought in the civil war, rising to major
general. Hayes suffered severe
injuries when he fought in the Battle
of South Mountain.
House of Rep.
and Congress
While in the army,
Representatives convinced
Hayes to run for a post in the
House of representatives. He
was then easily elected, entering
congress on December 1865.
After two years, he resigned and
started his first term of governor
of Ohio.
Running for
President
Representatives signed Hayes
up for running for president.
His rival was Democrat Samuel
Tilden of New York.
Presidency
When Hayes became president, one of the first things he did was promise Democrats in Florida one
cabinet post.
Hayes spent a lot of effort towards fighting behalf of Civil right laws, protecting black Americans. Though
the House of Representatives was Democrat controlled, they blocked Hayes’s moves. So instead He
turned his attention to improving the civil service, which was only seen many years later during the
Pendleton Act when Chester A. Arthur was President.
A problem that happened during Hayes’s presidency is the great Railroad Strike. Workers started to quit
their jobs due to the lack of pay they were receiving. So to fix the problem, Hayes sent out troops to stop
riots and gave the workers what they wanted. After that, many railroad workers went back to their posts.
After Presidency
After a four year term, Hayes
resigned to Fremont, Ohio, in
1881. He dedicated the rest of
his life to advocacy efforts on
behalf of such causes as
children’s literacy, prison reform,
and the gap between the rich
and poor Americans.
Rutherford B. Hayes died at the
age 70, in 1893, four years after
his wife.
