A Cultural Survey of
Tripura and Mizoram

Tripura
• Tripura is a state in North-Eastern India.
• It covers 10,491 sq. km.
• In 2011 the state had 3,671,032 residents,
constituting 0.3% of the country's
population.
• The diverse groups of Tripura have given
rise to a composite culture.
• It is one of the seven sister states.
Dances of Tripura
• Bizu Dance - It is a dance performed by the Chakmas on their new year, it is one of the
traditional dances of Tripura.
• Lebang Boomani Dance – It is a harvest dance performed by the people of Tripura. Both
men and women participate in the Lebang Boomani Dance.
• Garia Dance - It is a dance of the Tripuris. It is performed during Goria puja, to celebrate
the sowing of new crops.
• Hai-Hak Dance - It is a dance of the Halam community of Tripura, is performed for
worshiping Goddess Lakshmi.
• Jhum Dance - It is a dance, performed by girls and boys of Tripura.
• The Sangrai Dance, originated in Tripura performed by Mog tribes on Sangrai Festival.
Festivals of Tripura
• Durga Puja – It is the main festival of Tripura.
• Orange and Tourism Festival – It is celebrated at the Jampui hills in Tripura, the only place where the
oranges are cultivated in the state. To celebrate the endowments of nature, people gather at
the Jampui hills and remember the grace of God and Mother Nature.
• Ashokastami Festival – It is a festival that is celebrated with great enthusiasm.
• Poush Sankranti Fair - People assemble every year on the occasion of the Uttarayan Sankranti for a holy
dip in the river Gomati at its place of origination, known as Tirthamukh. Then a fair occurs.
• Garia Puja - A bamboo pole that symbolizes the Lord Garia, the deity of livestock and wealth, is
worshipped with flowers and garland.
• Tripuri Boat Race - It is an important event in Tripura and is held every year during the month of
August at Melaghara or Gandhacherra.
Art and Crafts of Tripura
• Cane and Bamboo Handicrafts - Cane and Bamboo craft are the main crafts
of Tripura. Ethnic groups in Tripura make wide variety of handicraft products
using bamboo and cane. Some of the well known craft produce from the State
include table mats, floor mats, room dividers, decorated wall panels, attractive
furniture of cane and various gift items.
• Handlooms - The handloom industry is the oldest industry in the State and
artisans produce cloths with the elegant designs, unique color combinations
and lasting texture.

Traditional Tripuri Dress
• Rikutu Gamcha with Kubai - Men in Tripura, wear Rikutu Gamcha which is like a
towel and Kubai which is a type of shirt.
• Pagdi - During the summer to protect the head from excessive heat, Tripuri men
wear turban or pagri over their head.
• Risa - Risa is a short size of cloth and designed it with gorgeous embroideries. It
is a cloth woven by women to cover the chest. Risa has different designs.

Traditional Food of Tripura
• Chakhwi – Chakhwi is a food item of the traditional Tripuri cuisine "Mui
Borok". Chakhwi (contains pasted rice and sodium powder). Main ingredients of the Veg
Chakhwi is Bamboo Shoot, Pork and Rice, Green Papaya.
• Aman Bangwi - It is special type of cake made only by Tripuri. The special type of leaf
used for preparing this cake is LAIRU. Apart from it, banana leaf can also be used. Or
now a days thick aluminum foil has also been used successfully.
• Wahan Mosdeng – Wahan Mosdeng is made of chilies. Chilies are usually burnt slightly
over an open flame to give a smoky flavor. Mosdeng is a side dish.
• Khundrupui Leaves – It is a kind of digestive leaf usually eaten with Awan Bangwi and
Wanhan Mosdeng.

Mizoram
• Mizoram is a state in north eastern India.
• Within the northeast region, it is the
southernmost landlocked state, sharing
borders with three of the Seven
Sister States.
• Mizoram covers an area of approximately
21,087 square kilometres.
• The culture of the Mizo tribes and its
social structure has undergone
tremendous change over 100 years, since
the arrival of Christianity in the late
1890s.
• Mizoram has a mild climate, being
relatively cool in summer 20 to 29 °C
Dances of Mizoram
• Cheraw – Cheraw is a very old traditional dance of the Mizos. Men sitting face to face on
the ground tap long pairs of horizontal and cross bamboo staves open and close in
rhythmic beats. Girls dance in and out between the beats of bamboo.
• Khuallam - Khuallam literary means 'Dance of the Guests'. It is a dance usually performed
in the ceremony called 'Khuangchawi' to attain the title of 'Thangchhuah'.
• Chailam - Chailam is a popular dance performed on the occasion of 'Chapchar Kut'. In this
dance, men and women stand in circles, with the women holding the waist of the man, and
the man on the women's shoulder. In the middle of the circle are the musicians who play
the drums and the mithun's horn.
• Sarlamkai - This is an impressive dance originating from the Pawi and Mara communities in
the southern part of Mizoram. This ceremony is performed to ensure that the vanquished
soul remains a slave to the victor even when the latter also dies.
Festivals of Mizoram
• Anthurium Festival - It is a festival promoting Anthurium grown in Mizoram and the rich Mizo customs
and traditions at Reiek Tlang to tourists. The Anthurium Festival is organized every year by the Tourism
Department and the Horticulture Department with financial support of the central government.
• Chapchar Kut - It is celebrated during March after jungle-clearing (clearing of the remnants of burning). It
spring festival celebrated with great favour.
• Thalfavang Kut – It is celebrated in the months of November after the completion of weeding of land.
• Khuado Kut - It is celebrated as a thanksgiving festival when all harvesting work is done. This festival is
held during full moon nights. It is organised by village chief.
• Mim Kut - Mim Kut is regarded as the oldest festival of the Mizo, it was a ceremony organized for the
dead. Feasting is a part of it. Mim means maize or corn. It is observed after the maize or corn is ripe.
• Pawl Kut – It is a festival celebrated in last week of December after completion of harvest. Pawl means
"Straw" hence pawl kut means a straw harvest festival. It is a post-harvest festival.
Art and Crafts of Mizoram
• Cane and Bamboo Handicraft - The traditional craft of the Mizo tribes can be seen in their
wonderful work of cane and bamboo. The use of cane and bamboo is basically done to produce
both utility and decorative items. These product designs of cane are highly durable. Baskets,
utensils, hats, flower vases, furniture and other items are made out of these cane and bamboo
handicrafts.
• Basketry – Bamboo baskets are the popular handicrafts by the Mizos. These are very beautiful.
Basket making is done mostly by men. The conical bamboo basket is used to carry firewood,
cotton and vegetables and other items. The close – weave basket is used for carrying grains.
• Weaving - Weaving is a popular craft in Mizoram. The weaving is done by women on the loin
loom.
Traditional Dresses of Mizoram
• Puanchei – It is a kind of shawl which is draped around the waist by tucking
the opposite ends onto the side. The word Puan is referred to a shawl like cloth fabric
that is woven by hand. It is considered to be an essential customary wear for
women during rituals.
• Kawrchei - It is a cloth that is worn over the waist. It is worn by women.
• Ngotekherh - It is a type of shawl worn by Mizos. It has plain white base with black
stripes running along its edges. The strips are called 'kherh'.
• Cyhna Hno – It is a dress which is worn by both males, as well as females,
is Cyhna Hno. This stunning Puan is made up of silk and has embroideries on
its borders to make it appear more beautiful.

Traditional Food of Mizoram
• Misa Mash Poorah - Misa Mach Poorah is one of the excellent recipes from
Mizoram. This is a dish traditionally made by grilling or roasting the shrimp
on banana leaves placed on hot charcoals. The shrimp is flavoured with local
spices and served with steamed rice.

  • 2. Tripura • Tripura is a state in North-Eastern India. • It covers 10,491 sq. km. • In 2011 the state had 3,671,032 residents, constituting 0.3% of the country's population. • The diverse groups of Tripura have given rise to a composite culture. • It is one of the seven sister states.
  • 3. Dances of Tripura • Bizu Dance - It is a dance performed by the Chakmas on their new year, it is one of the traditional dances of Tripura. • Lebang Boomani Dance – It is a harvest dance performed by the people of Tripura. Both men and women participate in the Lebang Boomani Dance. • Garia Dance - It is a dance of the Tripuris. It is performed during Goria puja, to celebrate the sowing of new crops. • Hai-Hak Dance - It is a dance of the Halam community of Tripura, is performed for worshiping Goddess Lakshmi. • Jhum Dance - It is a dance, performed by girls and boys of Tripura. • The Sangrai Dance, originated in Tripura performed by Mog tribes on Sangrai Festival.

Festivals of Tripura • Durga Puja – It is the main festival of Tripura. • Orange and Tourism Festival – It is celebrated at the Jampui hills in Tripura, the only place where the oranges are cultivated in the state. To celebrate the endowments of nature, people gather at the Jampui hills and remember the grace of God and Mother Nature. • Ashokastami Festival – It is a festival that is celebrated with great enthusiasm. • Poush Sankranti Fair - People assemble every year on the occasion of the Uttarayan Sankranti for a holy dip in the river Gomati at its place of origination, known as Tirthamukh. Then a fair occurs. • Garia Puja - A bamboo pole that symbolizes the Lord Garia, the deity of livestock and wealth, is worshipped with flowers and garland. • Tripuri Boat Race - It is an important event in Tripura and is held every year during the month of August at Melaghara or Gandhacherra.

  • 7. Art and Crafts of Tripura • Cane and Bamboo Handicrafts - Cane and Bamboo craft are the main crafts of Tripura. Ethnic groups in Tripura make wide variety of handicraft products using bamboo and cane. Some of the well known craft produce from the State include table mats, floor mats, room dividers, decorated wall panels, attractive furniture of cane and various gift items. • Handlooms - The handloom industry is the oldest industry in the State and artisans produce cloths with the elegant designs, unique color combinations and lasting texture.

Traditional Tripuri Dress • Rikutu Gamcha with Kubai - Men in Tripura, wear Rikutu Gamcha which is like a towel and Kubai which is a type of shirt. • Pagdi - During the summer to protect the head from excessive heat, Tripuri men wear turban or pagri over their head. • Risa - Risa is a short size of cloth and designed it with gorgeous embroideries. It is a cloth woven by women to cover the chest. Risa has different designs.
  • 11. Traditional Food of Tripura • Chakhwi – Chakhwi is a food item of the traditional Tripuri cuisine "Mui Borok". Chakhwi (contains pasted rice and sodium powder). Main ingredients of the Veg Chakhwi is Bamboo Shoot, Pork and Rice, Green Papaya. • Aman Bangwi - It is special type of cake made only by Tripuri. The special type of leaf used for preparing this cake is LAIRU. Apart from it, banana leaf can also be used. Or now a days thick aluminum foil has also been used successfully. • Wahan Mosdeng – Wahan Mosdeng is made of chilies. Chilies are usually burnt slightly over an open flame to give a smoky flavor. Mosdeng is a side dish. • Khundrupui Leaves – It is a kind of digestive leaf usually eaten with Awan Bangwi and Wanhan Mosdeng.

Mizoram • Mizoram is a state in north eastern India. • Within the northeast region, it is the southernmost landlocked state, sharing borders with three of the Seven Sister States. • Mizoram covers an area of approximately 21,087 square kilometres. • The culture of the Mizo tribes and its social structure has undergone tremendous change over 100 years, since the arrival of Christianity in the late 1890s. • Mizoram has a mild climate, being relatively cool in summer 20 to 29 °C
  • 14. Dances of Mizoram • Cheraw – Cheraw is a very old traditional dance of the Mizos. Men sitting face to face on the ground tap long pairs of horizontal and cross bamboo staves open and close in rhythmic beats. Girls dance in and out between the beats of bamboo. • Khuallam - Khuallam literary means 'Dance of the Guests'. It is a dance usually performed in the ceremony called 'Khuangchawi' to attain the title of 'Thangchhuah'. • Chailam - Chailam is a popular dance performed on the occasion of 'Chapchar Kut'. In this dance, men and women stand in circles, with the women holding the waist of the man, and the man on the women's shoulder. In the middle of the circle are the musicians who play the drums and the mithun's horn. • Sarlamkai - This is an impressive dance originating from the Pawi and Mara communities in the southern part of Mizoram. This ceremony is performed to ensure that the vanquished soul remains a slave to the victor even when the latter also dies.

  • 16. Festivals of Mizoram • Anthurium Festival - It is a festival promoting Anthurium grown in Mizoram and the rich Mizo customs and traditions at Reiek Tlang to tourists. The Anthurium Festival is organized every year by the Tourism Department and the Horticulture Department with financial support of the central government. • Chapchar Kut - It is celebrated during March after jungle-clearing (clearing of the remnants of burning). It spring festival celebrated with great favour. • Thalfavang Kut – It is celebrated in the months of November after the completion of weeding of land. • Khuado Kut - It is celebrated as a thanksgiving festival when all harvesting work is done. This festival is held during full moon nights. It is organised by village chief. • Mim Kut - Mim Kut is regarded as the oldest festival of the Mizo, it was a ceremony organized for the dead. Feasting is a part of it. Mim means maize or corn. It is observed after the maize or corn is ripe. • Pawl Kut – It is a festival celebrated in last week of December after completion of harvest. Pawl means "Straw" hence pawl kut means a straw harvest festival. It is a post-harvest festival.

  • 18. Art and Crafts of Mizoram • Cane and Bamboo Handicraft - The traditional craft of the Mizo tribes can be seen in their wonderful work of cane and bamboo. The use of cane and bamboo is basically done to produce both utility and decorative items. These product designs of cane are highly durable. Baskets, utensils, hats, flower vases, furniture and other items are made out of these cane and bamboo handicrafts. • Basketry – Bamboo baskets are the popular handicrafts by the Mizos. These are very beautiful. Basket making is done mostly by men. The conical bamboo basket is used to carry firewood, cotton and vegetables and other items. The close – weave basket is used for carrying grains. • Weaving - Weaving is a popular craft in Mizoram. The weaving is done by women on the loin loom.

  • 20. Traditional Dresses of Mizoram • Puanchei – It is a kind of shawl which is draped around the waist by tucking the opposite ends onto the side. The word Puan is referred to a shawl like cloth fabric that is woven by hand. It is considered to be an essential customary wear for women during rituals. • Kawrchei - It is a cloth that is worn over the waist. It is worn by women. • Ngotekherh - It is a type of shawl worn by Mizos. It has plain white base with black stripes running along its edges. The strips are called 'kherh'. • Cyhna Hno – It is a dress which is worn by both males, as well as females, is Cyhna Hno. This stunning Puan is made up of silk and has embroideries on its borders to make it appear more beautiful.
  • 22. Traditional Food of Mizoram • Misa Mash Poorah - Misa Mach Poorah is one of the excellent recipes from Mizoram. This is a dish traditionally made by grilling or roasting the shrimp on banana leaves placed on hot charcoals. The shrimp is flavoured with local spices and served with steamed rice.
