3. “ there are McDonalds everywhere. There’s one near you, and there’s one being
built right now nearer to you soon. Soon, if McDonalds goes on expanding at
present rate, there might even be one in your house. You could find Ronald
McDonalds boots under your bed and maybe his red wig too”,
Martin Plimmer – British Commentator.
4. An American fast food company, founded in 1940 as
a restaurant operated by Richard and Maurice
McDonald, in San Bernardino, California, United
States
USD150 billion company with more than 38,600
locations in over 120 countries
420,000 full-time employees, and 1.9 million total
around the world.
50 million customers served daily worldwide
is the process by which the principles of the fast-food
restaurant are coming to dominate more and more
sectors of American society as well as of the rest of
the world”
The total social revolution and the broader process of
globalization are spreading more widely and deeply
into various social institutes such as education, work,
healthcare, leisure, dieting, criminal justice system,
politics, religions, families and every aspect of
society.
Devote all attention to McDonalds and fast food
Industry because it serves as the major example and
the paradigm for a wide range of processes
5. The key dimensions of McDonaldization
1. Efficiency
The most important element for McDonalds success
it is a process of choosing the optimum means
to a given end
main goal is to cut cost and get everything as fast
as possible (things with the mini. human interaction)
2.Calculability
Its emphasis on the quantitative aspects of the
products sold and the services offered
The quantity has become quality
Main emphasis on the quantitative aspects not
on the qualitative aspects as qualitative
aspects can vary
4. Control
It is mainly exerted over the people who enter the world
of McDonalds
The workers are trained to do limited number of things
in the way which they are directed to do
It is the substitution of more predictable non-human
labour for human labour either through automation or
through deskilling the labor
3. Predictability
The assurance of all products and services are same
overtime and in all locations.
The scripted behavior which helps to create highly
predictable interactions between the staff and customers.
It is there to guarantee the uniformity of the products and
that there will be standard outcome
6. McDonaldization resulted in
improved profits, increased
availability of goods and services
to more people worldwide but also
reduced the variety of goods and
services around the world….
The Impact of McDonaldization
Main focuses of Ritzer are
deskilling, irrationality and
consumer workers which plays
an important role in
McDonaldization….
