2. Social media’s power to mobilize people into action is undeniable. Academics
and journalists first began to discuss the use of social media as a tool for
activism during the 2011 Arab Spring, which became nicknamed the
‘Facebook Revolution’ and the ‘Twitter Uprising’. Since then, social media
has been used by activists, protestors, and revolutionaries to attract global
support for fights against a range of injustices.
5. PTM a new civil rights and human rights movement called the Pashtun
Tahafuz Movement is attracting a huge number of international
media attention. PTM is a non-violent enormous movement intended
it to resolve Pashtun dissatisfaction. PTM, openly and indirectly,
targeting the Pakistani army.
This movement was called “Mehsud Tahfuz movement” it was started
in 2014 by a set of students at Gomal University D-I-Khan Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa. The initiative was to remove the landmines from
Mehsud territory FATA War, Talibanization, and operations affected
areas.
6. 1: Police officer Rao Anwer and others should be punished
who's tortuous illicit killed of Naqeeb.
2: stop extra judicially killed, fake encounters.
3: Missing persons must treat under the law of the court of
Pakistan. And forced Vanishing must be fade away to the
immediate end.
4: A Pashtun tribal areas should free of illegal landmines.
5:Checkpost security disturbing behavior . Finally the most
important is to stop inhumanity.
7. The PTM movement started to encourage Pashtuns
across Pakistan. They started long marches, rallies
against this deep unhappiness and frustration.
Frequently they used Social media as a
bridge of communication with Pashtuns
ethnic worldwide. They started their campaign with
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc, with
#PashtunTahfuzMovement
#PashtunLongMarch2Lahore
8. Pakistani local and mainstream media totally ignoring
activities of the movement. There were not a single
news of PTM protest in mainstream media. Even
though ignoring their activities by Pakistani media
will give them more power.
9.
10. Abdul Ghaffar Khan started three
non- violent movements of the
Indian independence movement,
Khudai Khidmatgar movement,
and Pashtunistan movement.
11. In the world Khan was the first leader who organized a
nonviolent force maximum 100,0001 mostly they were Pashtuns
which is also called (Pathans). The Khan movement of Khudai
Khidmatgar clothing was some specific color of (Red-shirts).
These all things were not acceptable to British Raj and they were
giving a harsh penalty to whom they were involved in civil
disobedience etc.
Khan was exiled after partition and faced massive troubles in his
life, however during British rule and Pakistan as well. Khan said
that “In the days of the British, I had to go to prison many times.
Although we are arguing with them, their treatment was
somehow tolerant and polite. But the treatment is given to me in
our Islamic country I don't even want to say anything”.
12.
13. . Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) was not familiar to the world before the gathering in
Islamabad. PTM organizers and supporters gathered in Islamabad to stage protest
against the extra judicial killing of Naqeebullah Mehsud.
PTM has few other legitimate demands including the elimination of forced
disappearances, extra judicial killings, removal of landmines, release or presenting the
missing persons before courts, an end to the discriminatory behavior and humiliation
at check posts. The response of the mainstream media to this popular disaffection was
highly disappointing. The complete blackout of the mainstream media shaped the
perception and perspectives among the charged youth that entire state machinery is
against them.
14. It provoked a strong backlash on social media against the extra-
judicial killings staged by the police, and discriminatory
treatment meted out to FATA Pashtuns. The police officer who
had orchestrated the killing of Naqeeb, Senior Superintendent
of Police Rao Anwar, maintained that Naqeeb had links with
the terrorist group the TTP, and had been involved in various
high-profile terror cases. However, Naqeeb’s family rejected
these allegations outrightly, and said that he was an innocent
citizen running his own business. The country’s top court, the
Supreme Court of Pakistan, took a notice of the killing and
ordered an inquiry into the reality of the ‘encounter’.
15. The two-day investigation carried out by senior police
officials found that Naqeeb was killed in a ‘fake
encounter’ which was ‘staged’ by Rao Anwar and his
team. The inquiry committee concluded that, based on
the profile of his background and history, the deceased
had no militant tendencies. He was living a ‘happy
family life’ and pursuing goals for his own future.
16. . Soon after his killing, social media was awash with
slogans such as ‘justice for Naqeeb’ and ‘justice
for Pashtuns’.Social media, the story of Naqeeb’s
murder was extensively covered. This media
activism played, on one hand, a key role in
highlighting the travails of. The very nature of
Naqeeb’s killing, in a fake ‘encounter’ with the
police, further compounded public outrage; it was
this public outcry that forced the Supreme Court
of Pakistan to take notice of the issue.
20. The impact and effectiveness of social media is also visible in
meeting many of the PTM‟s demand by the government. The
government has already started the removal of landmines and
eliminated majority of the military check posts across the
province. The government has formed apex committee to talk
to Pashtun Tahafuz Movement to address their genuine and
constitutional demands.
