Intonation
★ variations in pitch
★ frequency of vibration of the
vocal cords
★ intensity of the vibration of
the vocal cords - higher / lower
★ higher in level, it is high level
pitch [']
★ lower in level, it is low level
pitch [']
Four Factors to be considered in
Intonation
1. An utterance is divided into smaller
bits.
2. The choice of syllables to be stressed.
3. The choice of a syllable in each group
on which to effect a pitch-change
4. The choice of an appropriate tone
Intonation
1. An utterance is divided into smaller
bits
Three groups – breath group, sense
group and tone group
★ Breath group - a physiological
aspect (a pause made for inhaling
air into the lungs)
★ Sense group - without distracting
the sense of the utterances
★ Tone group - divide utterances
using punctuations like full-stop,
semi-colon, colon, exclamatory
mark and question mark.
2. The choice of syllables to be stressed
★ Content words - usually stressed
★ Grammatical or structural words - not
stressed
3. The choice of a syllable in each group on which
to effect a pitch-change
★ The nucleus of a tone group - intention of the speaker.
★ If the speaker does not want to give importance to any
word in the tone group - the last prominent syllable
will be the nucleus.
★ The first accented syllable in each tone-group - the
head of the tone-group
★ If there are any syllables before the head - the pre-
head
★ The most prominent syllable in each tone-group on
which the speaker affects a pitch-movement - the
nucleus.
★ The syllables between the head and the nucleus - the
body of the tone-group.
★ The syllables after the nucleus, if any, - the tail of the
tone-group.
4. Choice of a Tone
★ Choice of a tone - emotional attitude of the
speaker
★ What he wants to convey to the listener
★ A statement, question, a command or a
request.
